FRESH FROM THE PRESS

Gosh, is it that time of year again? I must admit in the depths of winter, I do completely empathise with the ancient cultures that worshipped the sun and prayed for it to re-appear every morning in case it decided not to! When we begin to enter into spring it makes me very happy – and nothing more so than planning our summer events season at NE1. As always, the first harbinger of summer at NE1 is the Northumbrian Water Quayside Seaside – I am so excited to see it returning and together we are planning to make it more fun than ever this year. It’s also Mother’s Day, so it's time to spoil my fantastic Mum and what could be better for that than a day of shopping and indulging in our fabulous city centre (still in the beautiful sunshine of course). My only problem is which delicious restaurant we head to - so I had better get reading to help me decide!

A ROSE FOR LEILA LILY'S

Our friends at Leila Lily's have received a prestigious accolade in recognition of its 'culinary excellence'. The Grey Street gem has been awarded the highly coveted AA Rosette after an unannounced visit from inspectors earlier this month. Not only does the Rosette put Leila Lily’s in the top tier of Newcastle's restaurants, but this latest achievement is particularly impressive considering the venue opened less than six months ago. Way to go guys! Following a three-course meal, consisting of North Sea octopus, Gloucester pork T-bone and a dark chocolate pavé dessert, the inspector praised the “imaginative dishes” and “quality produce used to good effect". leilalilys.co.uk

MAKING WAY FOR MAGIC WEEKEND!

Not only has the event sold out of Saturday and ‘full weekend’ category one tickets, but PDRL (Physical Disability Rugby League) is returning to Magic Weekend! The PDRL fixture will kick off at approximately 5.45pm on Sunday 24 May as Wigan Warriors take on Warrington Wolves, featuring Adam Hills, the host of Channel 4’s ‘The Last Leg’. The match will feature during half time of the Wakefield vs Hull KR game. superleague.co.uk

RAISE A PINT TO WYLAM BREWERY

Our Wylam chums have started the year on a high after making a list of the 100 Best Brewers in the World! Global beer aficionado website ratebeer.com has announced its RateBeer Best Awards, in which it tots up ratings made by its global community of beer-lovers submitted in millions of reviews. RateBeer Best’s list of the 100 Best Brewers in the World for 2019 features just seven UK breweries and Newcastle’s Wylam Brewery is the only one from the North East to make the rankings, meaning it beat more than 2,000 others in Britain. We'll raise a pint to that! wylambrewery.co.uk

NO 1 QUAYSIDE

Plans for a stunning office development on Newcastle’s Quayside have just been revealed, and they look absolutely breathtaking! As BIG’s first UK project outside of London, No. 1 Quayside will transform a patch of empty land on City Road into 100,000 sq ft of office space and create more than 1,000 jobs. A new project from BIG London, the curved 12-story building will stand in a prime Quayside location, just a stone's through from the Tyne and some of the city's biggest landmarks. The new building will include a living green roof as well as a private terrace garden on each floor. We can't wait to see this one take shape! facebook.com/bjarke.ingels.group

A CUT ABOVE

New kid on the block: The Hoi Polloi A WARM WELCOME TO NE1'S NEWEST CONTEMPORARY BARBERSHOP... It’s no secret that a good haircut goes a long way in life! An essential weapon in any modern man’s arsenal... When we heard rumours that a new barbershop was opening on Nun Street, our ears perked up. Once we got word that The Hoi Polloi was being led by award-winning British barber, Steve Chapman, that’s when our excitement went into overdrive. Steve began his barbering career in Manchester before moving to the capital to work for Murdock London - a high-end barber emporium that was regularly frequented by everyone from Saville Row tailors to household Hollywood names. Steve’s work became talk of the city and the service was so good he was named Classic Barber of the Year by the British Barber Institute. A relocation to Singapore soon followed, where Steve became Head Barber at Jermyn

Street; cutting hair for the likes of Trey Parker, the England Rugby Sevens team and several other A-list names. Following his return to the UK, Steve is entering a new chapter, and its setting is right here in NE1! The Hoi Polloi is his newest venture and the early signs are promising. It’s not hard to see why The Hoi Polloi is enjoying a successful launch. Steve’s meticulous interior planning has made the barbershop a tranquil refuge for guests - perfect for busy city-workers. Lavish, marble-top counters add a slice of sophistication and vibrant plants are calming additions to the design. Steve has carefully designed a service list that’s affordable, simple, yet oh-so suave. Haircuts start at £25; expect a relaxing wash before a detailed talk-through your desired cut. For those wanting to clean-up

unruly facial hair, or perhaps tame a grizzly beard, The Hoi Polloi have you covered. Forget a slap-dash shave! For just £15, the team will transport you to another world with scented hot towels, a pre-shave facial cleanse and exquisite razor-work throughout. The Hoi Polloi takes equipment and products seriously. From Steve’s

one-of-a-kind, hand-crafted Japanese scissors, to tasteful textured spray and three wonderful wax offerings, the salon boasts its very own range of products to suit all hair types. Pop in, chat to Steve and be blown away by our city's latest barbershop this spring! wearethehoipolloi.com
