NEW IN NE1
Word on the street WELCOME BACK. WE KNOW THAT 2021 DIDN’T START IN THE WAY WE HAD PLANNED, BUT THAT’S NOT TO SAY THAT OUR BEAUTIFUL CITY HAS BEEN STANDING STILL. IN FACT, IT HAS BEEN QUITE THE OPPOSITE. WE HAVE LOTS OF GREAT STUFF TO UPDATE YOU WITH! SO, WITH BRIGHTER DAYS FIRMLY IN SIGHT, WE THOUGHT WE’D BRING YOU A BUMPER UPDATE ON WHAT'S BEEN HAPPENING IN NEWCASTLE, FROM MAJOR EVENTS GETTING THE GREEN LIGHT, TO NEW BUSINESSES AND DAZZLING DEVELOPMENTS... WHO’S READY FOR MORE MELA MAGIC?
Newcastle Mela is back for 2021 and the event promises to bring bundles of culture to the streets of NE1! Scheduled to take place during the August bank holiday, we were jumping for joy when we learned that one of our favourite annual events will return for an open-air celebration of fun, laughter, music, entertainment and performance at Exhibition Park. Stick this event in your summer diary and you'll be able to learn something new, be entertained, enjoy exotic cuisine, dance to new music, experience fine art and immerse yourself in some of the finest traditions and cultures from around the world. It’s a fab, free family event - make sure you’re a part of it this August! newcastlemela.co.uk

PILGRIM STREET PROJECT POWERS ON
The Pilgrim Street development has been powering on through the tough times, and the word on the street is that plans to turn Newcastle’s former fire station into a 5-star hotel and restaurant have recently been submitted! Last time we checked in with the project, the iconic Worswick Street Bus Station had been pulled down as work on site really ramped up. Fast forward to spring, and plans to renovate the old fire station into a boutique hotel with sleek new bar and restaurant - as well as a gorgeous outdoor courtyard have been submitted and are awaiting the green light. It’s fair to say that the generational £100m Pilgrim Street development is coming along at a rate of knots! ryderarchitecture.com

With organisers hard at work planning this year's extravaganza, The Hoppings is looking to return in fabulous fairground style this summer and bring with it the family fun we can all associate with this Geordie summer institution! THE FUTURE IS GREEN
Huge news surrounding our city’s push for sustainable living! Newcastle City Council have just been awarded £27.25m from a Government fund to help improve energy efficiency across a number of iconic Toon buildings. Famous NE1 landmarks such as The Core at Newcastle Helix, Blandford House (home to our friends at Discovery Museum) and the Theatre Royal, will be a few standout names that will see a raft of new modifications. In the next few years, we’ll see a number of widespread changes such as solar panels, state-of-the-art energy efficient windows, smart building management systems and a brand new heating network powered by the District Energy Centre. It's a pretty big deal for the city, and the results of the scheme are expected to remove around 4,050 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year (equivalent to taking 2,828 cars off the road!) and safeguard more than 800 jobs across the city, with businesses saving up to £386k a year on running costs! newcastle.gov.uk

BRIGHT IDEAS
THE FUTURE IS NOW: Bold £50m vision to transform Newcastle's city streets into world class spaces... THE CITY IS SET FOR A TRANSFORMATIVE TIME AS NEWCASTLE CITY COUNCIL HAVE UNVEILED A BREATHTAKING VISION TO HELP TAKE NEWCASTLE'S HEART TO THE NEXT LEVEL. THE RECENT PUBLICATION OF THE £50M CITY CENTRE TRANSFORMATION PROGRAMME (CCTP) PROPOSALS MARK THE BEGINNING OF A HUGELY EXCITING AND AMBITIOUS TIME FOR OUR CITY CENTRE! HERE’S EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE SPECTACULAR PLANS TO TRANSFORM THE TOON'S TOP STREETS INTO ONE OF THE WORLD’S BEST SPACES...
As plans for transformation have been well underway, Newcastle is ready to flourish and will reach new heights in the months and years to come. Linking the heart of the city centre together will truly revolutionise Newcastle. When will we see the plans come together? Things are moving forward with businesses, groups and local people getting involved in discussions. We can't wait to see what's in store as our city continues to build and grow as the phased approach kicks off. We'll be sure to keep you updated with more news and announcements in upcoming issues and online as momentum builds around Newcastle's city centre transformation. Stay tuned! How do I voice my opinion? This is a collaborative project, and so Newcastle City Council and partners really do want to hear the views of residents, businesses and other organisations on the proposals drawn up to achieve these ambitions. There will be a number of opportunities for people to have their say and details of how they can view these proposals and respond at newcastle.gov.uk/citycentre. Alternatively, you can also share your views by emailing citycentre@newcastle.gov.uk.
Working with a team of industry experts, Newcastle City Council and its partners plan to deliver a long-term vision to transform Newcastle city centre via a series of transformative interventions on both our major areas and some of our wonderful lanes and side streets in the heart of the city centre. These new changes have all been designed to make our city a more welcoming and attractive place for everyone to live, work and enjoy. The City Centre Transformation Programme (CCTP) will deliver a cleaner, greener and healthier Newcastle that will benefit generations to come. The overall plan is to create a unique European destination for tourism, business and investment that us Geordies can continue to be proud of, as well as attracting further investment in the area, allowing our wider communities to grow and flourish. It’s an incredibly encouraging step forward and an ingenious idea for streets such as Ridley Place and Saville Row. What are the areas of the city included in the plans? The CCTP will be breathing new life into some of the most-loved areas of the city, including Ridley Place, Grey Street, Northumberland Street and Saville Row - all vitally important streets in the heart of Newcastle. They bring a unique touch, helping to complement the high street brands, as well as giving our smaller, independent businesses a brilliant opportunity to trade close to the centre of the city. As you can imagine, the pandemic has had a devastating effect on high streets and city centres across the globe. But as we all try to consolidate and rebuild following a turbulent 12 months, the Council is able to kickstart its long-held vision to transform the city centre, now even more important as we look to recover following the impact of COVID-19.

Fat Hippo's DIY Burger Boxes
MISSING YOUR FAVOURITE BURGER JOINT? IF YOU FANCY PUTTING A CREATIVE TWIST ON YOUR USUAL TOON TAKEOUTS, THEN LOOK NO FURTHER THAN FAT HIPPO’S DIY BURGER BOXES! Fat Hippo has always been a regular on our foodie agenda, and with lockdowns and restrictions forcing us to stay home for a little while longer, we’ve been on the hunt for new ways to enjoy some of our favourite city restaurants. Yes, many of our go-to spots are offering up takeout alternatives,
which have been total saviours for Newcastle foodies in recent months, but when we heard that we were able to switch up our kitchen routine and given the chance to cook up our own Fat Hippo storm from the comfort of our own homes, we were licking our lips to get in on the action. Fat Hippo is herding up a new community of burger-lovers by offering nationwide delivery on their delicious DIY burger boxes. So, as the weekend rolls around again and we’re plotting our next foodie move, we’re bagging ourselves a Fat Hippo at Home Kit and we can’t wait to get our fix. Our kit arrived promptly on Friday afternoon. We opted for both the Fat Hippo at Home Kit For 2 (from £18) and the Vegan Fat Hippo at Home Kit For 2 (from £18) - because why not try it all? You can select either kit and up the ingredients for four people if required, and you can also purchase a Fat Hippo Gift Card (from £10), if you want to give the gift of good food this spring! Each kit comes with everything

you need to make the restaurant’s namesake Fat Hippo burgers meaning you’ll be able to create the ultimate, patty-packed feast with your own hands. Ingredients include: Demi brioche buns (or vegan brioche buns), flank + forequarter blend patties
(or vegan patties), a sprinkle of magic dust (to-die-for!), American cheese (or vegan cheese), smoked bacon rashers (or ‘cajun fakon bits’), chorizo and the all-important Fat Hippo sauce! We’re drooling just reading through the ingredients, before we even make a start. The process is as easy as 1, 2, 3. Simply lay out all of your ingredients, fire up the frying pan and unleash your inner chef! Before long, with a loosened belt buckle and a towering burger with all the trimmings, we’re ready to tuck in. The verdict? As glorious as ever! It's an amazing thing to take one of the Toon's top burger joints and bring it to your own kitchen. Pair it with the sheer joy of getting the family together for a creative cook-a-long, and it's the perfect way to reconnect with your favourite restaurant at home. The patties are as delicious and as juicy as ever, the brioche buns are fluffy and fresh, and the famous Fat Hippo sauce packs a punch, taking us back to the good old days whiling away the hours at Fat Hippo Underground pre or post-theatre show. This one is sure to bring smiles to faces. Check it out! fathippo.co.uk

SPRING TREATS
In safe hands
They've kept our city safe throughout all of the lockdowns, and they've smiled through the whole process! We'd like to take this time to say a huge thank you to our heroes in blue, our Street Rangers! Here's a quick catch-up with one of those stars, Chris Vanderpijpen. How excited are you to see people out and about in the city again in the coming weeks? Excited would be an understatement! I've really missed the unique vibe that Newcastle city centre has and the experiences it brings with it. We have a great mix of locals and tourists who come to enjoy our amazing, friendly city and I cannot wait to be in the centre of that, helping everyone have a happy and safe experience when we return. How have you been preparing for the reopening of some businesses? As Street Rangers we have been working throughout lockdown, to not only ensure that businesses are safe and secure, but to keep on top of any environmental issues and looking after anyone that has been continuing to use the area for essential reasons. In the coming weeks, more work will be put into ensuring our glorious city is ready to welcome everyone back. Do you have any lockdown good news stories to share with us? In a lot of cases, we as Street Rangers are the only people businesses and essential workers have had the chance to interact with and it's been a pleasure to take some time to have a conversation. It’s been great to help them smile in what has been a difficult and lonely period for many people. How can people get help if they’re unsure about heading back into the city? This magazine and the NE1 social media channels are a great source of information on what is happening in the city centre, along with the local authority website for the latest information. And, of course, the NE1 Street Ranger team are always available on the streets to help with any questions or information so that a happy and safe experience is had by all. Can you tell us the first place you’ll be heading to in the city? There are some fantastic new additions to the city, such as Livello’s rooftop, which looks amazing. I love food, so I'm going to make it my mission to dine out at least once a week starting with Khai Khai on the Quayside and, of course, the new Hard Rock Cafe is on my list. So much choice and such little time! I'll have to walk that little bit more to burn off the calories... newcastlene1ltd.com
How Busy Is Toon?
Our venture with Newcastle City Council and Newcastle University is back to give you peace of mind before you head into the city this spring... The How Busy Is Toon website is your new best friend when it comes to safely manoeuvring around the city this April. A nifty project designed to remind visitors that our city is a safe place to be with social distancing measures in place. How Busy Is Toon works with real-time data to share footfall and parking information across city centre locations. The information is gathered by the University’s Urban Observatory from cameras that measure footfall levels on Northumberland Street, giving visitors an idea of how easy it is to social distance in the city’s busiest spots at any one time. So, how does it work and how easy it is to understand? It’s incredibly user-friendly, thanks to the good old traffic light system. Red indicates high footfall, amber shows an average footfall and, as ever, green means you’re good to go. You’ve tackled footfall, but what about getting in and out of the city? This handy new website is also set up to let us know how many cars are parked in the city centre’s car parks. It’s never been easier to get ahead of the game and plan your commute into the city. Make sure you head over to the How Busy Is Toon website and get ahead of the game! howbusyistoon.com
CHOCOLATE CHAMPION! After the chocolate-filled madness of Easter, we thought it was a great time to catch up with Zoë Rutter, the brains behind Newcastle’s School of Chocolate, La Chocolatrice... How did your chocolate journey begin? To say that I love chocolate is an understatement. It has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. From about the age of four, on a daily basis, my grandpa used to buy me a big bar of chocolate, tell me to hide it, and to only eat it when I was sure that no one was watching. We are all about sharing in my house, but not when it comes to chocolate. This indulgence continued until I was 18 when I moved to a small town in France, where I worked as an au pair. This is where I discovered my passion for cooking, baking, and ultimately for making chocolate. As an 18-year-old living abroad for the first time, I was particularly captivated by French gastronomy. I began experimenting with recipes and techniques and it was during that year that I perfected the chocolate pudding. I spent three and a half years living in France, where I studied and sampled patisserie and chocolate. When I returned to the UK, I trained to be a French and Spanish teacher which I did for two years, until June 2019 when I decided the time was right to launch La Chocolatrice. It's great to see the city blooming back into life again as we head into spring. What does the new season mean for your business? Spring is such a fun time for us at La Chocolatrice. It gives us a great opportunity to be creative, dream up new flavours, and go wild with new creations. Also, the weather is starting to warm and there is a lovely buzz inside of our chocolate factory. Do you have any events in the pipeline? We can’t wait to start teaching chocolate making workshops again! We teach a Chocolate Truffle Making Workshop which is fantastic fun for any chocolate-lover. During a 90-minute session, you learn how to make the best chocolate truffles, chocolate flakes, and chocolate crisps. We are hoping to add some new classes to the line up later in the year so stay tuned for that. We also have some new chocolate bars lined up which will launch in the coming weeks. We are currently busy trialling them in our chocolate factory kitchen and I am really excited for these to launch! Keep your eyes peeled. lachocolatrice.co.uk

Spring forward And so there you have it, as we move into the next stage and the sun begins to shine, there’s lots to get excited about across the city looking ahead. From pavement cafes and al fresco dining, to getting lost amongst the rails of your favourite threads, and getting your lockdown ‘do’ sorted by a professional, much of the city is now reopen and waiting for you to join them. With a little luck, the April showers will stay away and we’ll enjoy some sunny days and blissful evenings amongst the continental outdoor atmosphere. With huge plans progressing at pace to add even more sparkle to some of the city’s most iconic streets, we’re so excited about the rest of 2021, and the years to come as we spring back from a year no-one expected, and head into the future, grateful for our gem of a city, with all its beautiful bridges and buildings, and filled with the friendliest crowd in the UK. As for the NE1 magazine... well as things are opening up, our pages are filling up, and we’ll be returning soon to keep you updated on all the happenings, openings, screenings, and who knows - perhaps even… events (fingers crossed)! Watch out for the next issue landing to keep you in the loop, and until then, enjoy your return to the city, eat your favourite meal, and raise a glass - spring is here and we’ve got lots to look forward to!

Communicating with our staff and customers in a new, virtual way was quite the challenge for our team, but after joining a number of Allies Group training sessions with Amy, we were enthusiastic, invigorated and ready to take it on the task in hand. Amy’s sessions provided energy, humour – and most importantly, she spoke in a language we all understood. It can be intimidating when stepping into a ‘tech’ world you’re unfamiliar with, but the pace, positivity and patience involved in these training sessions meant that we were able to take on new projects with confidence.
