FRESH FROM THE PRESS
Spring is springing, it’s true! I see cherry blossom, I get too hot in jumpers some days, I can do things outside after 6pm without a torch, it’s really happening folks! As the nights get lighter and the layers are gradually removed, what better way to celebrate spring in the city than to sink your teeth into all sorts of Mother’s Day inspo, this issue is crammed full of it. From floral workshops to formal glassware, from hampers to hyacinths. Whether it’s Mam, Mum, Momma, Mummy, Ma, or any other significant person you celebrate on this day, make it a good one with our guide (and it would be remiss of me not to wave hello in this column to my own Mum, who I know reads this magazine cover to cover, here’s a test to check!). We’re giving you the lowdown on the stage spectacles you can expect throughout 2022 with our World Theatre Day feature, and shining a light on Newcastle’s burgeoning coffee and cake scene, as well as marking 200 days to the Rugby League World Cup, and welcoming Luther (Idris Elba) and Huey Morgan (stick ‘em up punk) to the city for gigs galore. It’s all happening in our splendid city friends, so don’t delay, read on, and plan your weeks ahead with the NE1 magazine! BEN WHITFIELD HEAD OF MARKETING AND EVENTS

AHEAD OF HIS HUGE SHOW AT THE TYNE THEATRE AND OPERA HOUSE THIS APRIL, WE SAT DOWN WITH COMEDY LEGEND, JOHN SHUTTLEWORTH, TO DISCUSS ALL THINGS NEWCASTLE!
What can we expect from your new tunes on this tour? My tunes are notoriously catchy with an infectious beat... I expect to make bodies twitch as they try to resist moving to the beat, but it will be in vain. The lyrics will go round and round in their heads keeping the crowd awake night-after-night. Sorry in advance! How many times have you performed in the Toon? I’ve been a regular visitor to Newcastle since the early 1990s and have played in several city-centre venues including the Tyne Theatre and Opera House and the Live Theatre. Both are wonderful venues! Any favourite venues/pubs/ places to visit in Newcastle? I recall being lured to a floating nightclub once – a converted ferry on the river called the Tuxedo Princess. It had a revolving dance floor, and as an experiment, I started walking around the wrong
way as that bloke does in the film Midnight Express. The security gave me a right dressing down... If you had to write a song about Newcastle, what do you reckon it'd be about? It would be a song for young revellers, advising them to wear a substantial overcoat when they go out on the town during the winter months, and even a thermal vest (long-sleeved, of course!). How do Geordie audiences differ from the rest of the UK? They seem to have more to say for themselves, (despite being difficult to understand!) and come across as extremely friendly - apart from that bouncer on the floating nightclub... Favourite Geordie phrase and why? I love "what ye uptee the neet?" I always hope that the answer is "am goona see that canny lad Shuttleworth!".
The much-loved Easter pantomime returns to Tyne Theatre and Opera House this April. We’ve got our hands on four tickets to give away to one lucky winner! Join Kansas farm-girl Dorothy and her pet dog Toto on this magical adventure suitable for all ages. Watch in amazement as they are picked up by a tornado and carried off to the magical Land of Oz. With help from their new friends the Munchkins, they travel to the Emerald City where the great Wizard of Oz lives.
THE LUCKY WINNER WILL RECEIVE 4 TICKETS TO SATURDAY 16TH APRIL, 7PM PERFORMANCE. (DATE NON TRANSFERABLE)
To enter, head online at GETINTONEWCASTLE.CO.UK to win! The prize draw closes on Friday 8th April. Terms and conditions: Tickets are non-transferable and no cash alternative is available.
