Welcome to our bumper Christmas edition; just like Christmas of old, your very own trusty guide to all that is good over the festive period, only nowadays you can rely on our fabulous NE1 Magazine rather than the Radio Times! The year in Newcastle has been ridiculously busy with everything going on from major new openings to lots of building work and even the creation of a new [Science] City, from wowing Indian, Middle Eastern and US investors, to stunning stunt driving as part of the biggest and best yet Newcastle Motor Show; we even got a football team back in the Premiership. And next year promises to be even better for the city and NE1. The Great Exhibition of the North, new investment in Northumberland Street and Blackett Street, a reinvigorated Bigg Market and more events than you can shake a stick at, all helping to ensure that Newcastle remains in the premier league of European cities in which to live, work, study and invest. Happy Christmas and here’s to a great 2018! Sean Bullick, Chief Executive

Head over the water for a culture fix at the BALTIC in association with Freedom City 2017. Starless Midnight portrays the important legacies of Dr King and includes work from leading artist Edgar Arceneaux alongside participating artists Barby Asante, Louis Cameron, Charles Gains and Season Butler to name but a few. It’s a truly inspiring showcase - make sure you check it out this winter until 21 January 2018. balticmill.com

BRITTANY PAPE TUCKS IN… In comparison to the hustle and bustle of the city centre on a midweek lunch break, dAt bAr is an away-from-it-all sanctuary tucked away in a perfect location just off Grey Street. The alternative décor with a rock ’n’ roll edge gives the place a uniqueness like nowhere else in NE1; with comic book-style art covering the walls, neon signs dotted around the place and the odd motorbike part making an appearance. Though we are opting for the sensible tipple of a soft drink, the cocktail menu almost tempts us. Now, I’m not actually a vegan or a veggie, but I’m always up for trying new things - and the meat-free menu here has me spoilt for choice. After some deliberation I decide on the toasted sourdough bruschetta to start (£6), while my dining pal takes our waiters recommendation of Papa al Pomodoro (£6). The beautifully bright ingredients make us want to dive in before we’ve even had the chance to snap the perfect Insta! Vibrant vegetables atop of crisp bread drizzled in olive oil makes the perfect starter and has me

even more excited for what follows. The vegan sweet potato mac ‘n’ cheese (£10) on the main menu catches my eye. The creamy dish made with soya bechemel and vegan cheese, leaves me with a full tummy and smile on my face. Meanwhile my lunch mate opts for the white bean and butternut squash risotto (£12). The flavours are great and we don’t even notice anything missing, proving perhaps you don’t have to be vegan or vegetarian to enjoy meatfree food. datbar.gustouk.com

exactly what you’re looking for and get a little assistance if you’re not quite sure what it is you want. If there was ever a time to mix it up with your makeup, it’s the New Year. I’m often guilty of sticking to the same old makeup routine, so the thought of trying a totally new look was exciting. With that in mind, I was given a full makeover. To compliment my dark hair and eyes, I opted for a beautifully bright smoky eye using some of the orangey-red freedom shadow shades (£5 each) finished off with

some compulsory festive sparkle (Body Sparkles, £12). The brand new Soft Sparkler highlighter (£20) is a definite must-have for makeup addicts adding a gorgeous natural glow to the skin and finishing off that perfect party look. One of the most unique things about Inglot is its Freedom System. The magnetic palettes make it easy for you to create the perfect makeup palette tailored to you. 15.01.18 MONDAY MOMENTS

POSTCARD FROM... India 2000kms, crazy traffic, horns blaring, cows in the road next door to ever-present stallholders, cars, buses, taxis, lopsided trucks, rickshaws, scooters – often with whole families on board, or goods only just balanced going off for sale. And people, people everywhere. India is the most wonderful, exciting assault on the senses – and I loved it! We started in Bangalore and, travelling via Goa (smart holiday destination and film festival venue) and New Delhi, ended up in Chandigarh to the north. We were there to meet Indian businesses, universities, start-up incubators, bio-tech clusters and generally get a feel for the place and its people.

This is a country of 1.2 billion people, a daily birth rate of 70,000 (that’s a new Newcastle every week!) and they’re building 35kms of new road every day (up from 3kms just two years ago). This is a country of people in a hurry and, not dissimilar to some driving styles I saw, just want to get from A to B as quickly and efficiently as possible. Are there opportunities out there for the North East? Without a doubt! We share a language and a great deal of culture, including a significant diaspora population. From what I saw they really get the value of collaboration, including international. And I’m talking way more than Indian restaurants… education, bio-tech, pharma, manufacturing. You name it, they’re doing it – and to an enviable standard. We need to be there, working to mutual benefit – and I’m really looking forward to my next visit. Adrian Waddell
