It’s easy to be a little despondent at this time of year. The fairy lights have been packed away, clothes appear to have shrunk a little (in my case a lot) and reaching for your bank card to make a payment instils a level of fear that Alfred Hitchcock would be proud of. But fear not, 2018 looks like it is shaping up to be the best in living memory for this great city, there’s lots to be positive about! Kicking-off Newcastle’s annual events programme, we have the region’s most popular foodie event, Newcastle Restaurant Week which returns again in August. May sees the return of the ever popular Magic Weekend, with over 65,000 visitors creating a carnival atmosphere for the weekend. Great Exhibition of the North fires the starting gun for the summer’s festivities in June, followed by Screen on the Green, Newcastle Motor Show and Newcastle Pride, with the Great North Run and Welcome Students of the World bringing the summer’s festivities to a close. Then, with a brief pause in the 2018 events extravaganza, we are firmly in to our winter programme and Christmas – we have big things planned this year! With all this going on, it’s no wonder that the Rough Guide has named Newcastle as being the number one destination in the world to visit in 2018. Stephen Patterson Director of Communications

24.01.17 WE LOVE WEDNESDAY

POSTCARD FROM... Vienna “Visiting Vienna for New Year and expectations from all the family were fabulously high. After all, it is the world’s number one most liveable city according to just about every index ever published! Might it all be a bit serious and high culture though? The New Year’s Concert at the Musikverein, Die Fledermaus at the Staatsoper, prancing Lippizaners at the Hofburg, and what is Vienna Modernism anyway? Well yes, it could be (even if we did only manage the horsey bit). But… it wasn’t! The real surprise about Vienna was how much was going on and how many Viennese there were from all backgrounds the capital of Austria is one of Europe’s most multicultural cities. Because New Year’s Eve fell on a Sunday and New Year’s day on a Monday, by law, the shops

were shut. So, with people not flocking to the centre to shop, what were they doing? The answer is pretty much everything else and evidently very much enjoying the experience. There were thousands of people of all ages ice skating in the major parks and on the roofs of tall buildings, there was music everywhere with stages, bands and DJs on the main streets and squares (my son enjoyed James Brown and throwing some shapes, as he tells me it’s called, with a number of remarkably agile pensioners on Kartnerstrasse). There were big screens showing the ballet, families out for schnitzel, kids strolling with strudel and hot chocolate, people in and out of the city’s civic buildings as if they owned them (God forbid!), and all of this happening without rush or fuss; but at a pace allowing the crowds to luxuriate in the experience. This year as investment goes into the Northumberland Street area and the pedestrianisation of Blackett Street with a view to creating a beautiful city centre for the people of Newcastle, Vienna is surely a model we would do well to follow closely.” Sean Bullick Chief Executive, Newcastle NE1 Limited

EXTRA TIME

30.01.18 TURN IT UP TUESDAY

WITH PAUL DIXON

PAUL DROPS IN TO GIVE US HIS VIEW FROM THE TERRACES AS WE KICK OFF 2018 AT ST. JAMES’ PARK… Happy New Year! An unusually positive start for us Newcastle supporters with an away win to start the year. For those unfamiliar with the club, you're more likely to encounter an impoverished banker than a smiling Newcastle supporter in the New Year. The prospects for 2018? Churchill once called Russia "a riddle wrapped in mystery, inside an enigma", that's like The Sun crossword compared to forecasting how NUFC will fare. The big talking point is still the prospective takeover, and for most of the support and the manager, it can't happen soon enough. Staying in this division come May is financially imperative, as well as for the sanity of supporters, because if the current TV deal is lucrative, the next one due in a couple of years will produce figures that to most people simply don't exist. Our purchasers want a slice of that action, they want to be feasting on the top table with Harry and Meghan, not nibbling a burger with the riff raff next to the toilet door. Only two people can make this deal happen and get 2018 off to a flyer, Messrs Ashley and Stavely. Both successful, both moving in the same circles and wondering if a 'coming together' would ruin things for them. The noises in that (in)famous 'When Harry Met Sally’ café scene would be a comparison with most supporter's reaction to a takeover. In a nutshell then, by May we'll either be lording it at the (Crystal) Palace, or burgering about in Brentford. C'est la vie Newcastle United style. Happy 2018! blackadderboy@yahoo.co.uk

Get ready to dance the night away underneath the disco ball at Newcastle’s newest party venue on Newgate Street. The room will be filled with all the finest 80s and 90s tunes to get the party popping. There’s something to satisfy all your night out needs with some of the greatest tunes from the past couple of decades that will take you on a journey back in time. retro-bars.co.uk
