After a busy festive period and another successful NE1 Restaurant Week has drawn to a close, the remaining winter months loom ahead - but all is not lost, there’s still lots happening in Newcastle over the next few weeks and Valentine’s Day is coming up! I began my internship with NE1 at the beginning of Restaurant Week and to say it’s been busy would be an understatement! Not only have I relished the opportunity to visit some great new restaurants in NE1, but I now have a long list of exciting new eating places to try out for myself.

I am fast realising just how much there is to discover in our wonderful city. If you despair at the seemingly endless winter months, you’ll be pleased to know that there is a lot happening in Newcastle to keep you entertained. Comedians John Bishop, Jason Manford and Bill Bailey are all in town to cheer us up this month and there are also numerous foodie events to sink your teeth into, including Yorkshire Pudding Day (who knew?), National Pizza Day and of course, Pancake Day - I for one can’t wait to try The Botanist’s hanging kebab-style pancakes! I hope you can discover somewhere new to dine this month or enjoy one of the numerous exciting events happening in NE1! Hannah Simms NE1 Intern

NEW IN NE1
Word on the Street OUR AMAZING CITY IS FOREVER GROWING AND INSPIRING US WITH NEW OPENINGS, FUTURE EVENTS AND EXCITING NEWS. LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT WHAT’S NEW IN NE1 THIS SEASON…
PRIDE IN OUR CITY
Newcastle Pride will return to our city from 20th – 22nd July 2018, once again providing a strong and positive LGBTQ+ voice in the North East. NE1 are proud to be back on board as headline sponsors for the Pride weekend this July on the Town Moor. This colourful and brilliantly vibrant event is a summer season highlight, celebrating LGBTQ+ life on Tyneside. Stay tuned on the Northern Pride website for more information and announcements. northern-pride.com
STEPHENSON QUARTER
There are lots of exciting developments going on in NE1 – one of the biggies being Stephenson Quarter, where developers, the Clouston Group, are working on a key city centre area, which will in turn create more than 3,000 jobs in NE1. The first phase has been completed – introducing the brand spanking new Crowne Plaza Hotel, The Rocket office building, car park and the redevelopment of The Boiler Shop building. The second phase will see the North East Futures UTC come together as well as Meteor – a new office block. Plans will soon be submitted for Planet – a second office space for mainly digital and IT firms looking to expand. It’s safe to say it’s an exciting time for our city and its growing businesses! stephensonquarter.com
CELEBRATING 120 YEARS!
2018 is a very special year for our friends at Davidsons the Jewellers on Grey Street – marking 120 years of the business in NE1. The family-run, independent jewellery store has made history in the city, and continues to do so as the business goes from strength to strength year in, year out. It was a humble beginning for Davidsons – Robert Davidson set up a workshop in an upstairs unit on Grey Street 120 years ago. In the 50s, his nephew Stanley Davidson took over the workshop before his son, Allan set up the retail jewellery shop. Helen and Tony took over the business in the late 90s and have continued the high level of quality and detail in the jewellery offering. This is the sparkling store you see today on 94 Grey Street. Congratulations to the family – and a very happy 120th birthday! davidsonsthejewellers.co.uk

NEXT STOP… DUBAI!
We’re very excited to announce Stephen McKenry, 33, from Gateshead as the lucky winner of our fantastic Geordie Jackpot ticket to Dubai! After signing up for just £1 a week prior to winning, Stephen received the all-important phone call to let him know he had won two return tickets to Dubai, travelling from Newcastle Airport. So as we’re all just getting over the ice and snow, Stephen is busy booking his trip to Dubai, the millionaire’s playground, where the average temperate for January is a balmy 24°C. What a prize! Stay tuned on the Geordie Jackpot website for updates on Stephen’s travels! geordiejackpot.co.uk
US AMBASSADOR COMES TO TOWN
We’re building on our city’s relationship with the US this year, kicking things off with a visit from the American Ambassador. It was his first official visit to an English city outside London since taking office, and we welcomed him with open arms here at NE1. Ambassador Robert Wood Johnson, a member of the Johnson & Johnson dynasty and owner of the New York Jets, met with key business leaders in Newcastle. On hosting the American Ambassador, NE1’s Sean Bullick said: “In this post-Brexit world, a time when the UK is looking to build relationships with countries outside the EU, we are trying to get ahead of the curve by further developing trade and investment links with countries including the United States.”
DACIA MAGIC WEEKEND 2018 The trip, arranged to coincide with Martin Luther King Day in the US, involved Mr Johnson visiting Newcastle University earlier in the day to see a statue of the American civil rights leader. The statue was unveiled in November 2017 to mark the 50th anniversary of Dr King’s visit to the university to accept an honorary degree. newcastlene1ltd.com
Rugby Football League (RFL) is back at St James’ Park for the Dacia Magic Weekend 2018. NE1 Ltd, Newcastle City Council and Newcastle United Football Club have secured the dates for a fourth year of sporting fun in the city. Thousands of fans from NE1 and beyond will once again flock to Newcastle to spectate and celebrate as 12 of the sport’s top teams battle it out on the field. The games will take place on 19 and 20 May with an additional match between Newcastle Thunder and Bradford Bulls on Friday 18 May at Kingston Park. Look out for updates at: newcastlene1ltd.com

THE DEPARTMENT OF DISTRACTIONS
You see their work - but you never see them. Objects, moments, the seeds of stories, the odd little things you come across every day that make you think: what’s going on there? The Department of Distractions is an organisation so secretive you’ve probably never heard of them. To them, their job is to plan stories that make the world more interesting; but to outsiders, it seems their job is to make us look the other way. In this conspiracy-theory documentary at Northern Stage, a story is starting to get out of hand, the Department of Distractions have lost control of it and now they’re in danger of being exposed. How far are they willing to go to maintain their anonymity - and how much are you willing to believe? Canaria
What was originally planned as a week in the sun for a friend’s birthday at Gran Canaria’s Winter Pride, quickly turned into a working holiday when we were invited to cover the event, following the success of the launch of Pride World Media last May. Our online radio station, Pride World Radio, reaches 125 countries and more than 800,000 listeners every month and, having already had a great time covering several UK Prides, we couldn’t wait to take the show to Gran Canaria. So we packed a microphone, some party bunting and lots of ibuprofen and off we went! It was an incredible week spent interviewing the main stage acts, chatting to the island’s big
drag names and meeting people from all over the world. Our tech director back in Newcastle kept everything running smoothly and since I host the breakfast show, we still found time to celebrate, party and dance until the early hours. A highlight of the week was broadcasting the show from the Pride parade through the streets of Playa Del Ingles. We met an amazing, diverse group of people and spread the word about the free Pride World Radio app so that people could keep up with us wherever they were in the world. Our base, and hearts, might be in Newcastle - but we’re already planning our return trip to cover Gran Canaria’s main Pride event later this year… Peter Darrant Pride World Radio Presenter

HOW TO PERFECT YOUR PANCAKES…
By Julien Poulalion, La Petite Crêperie, Grainger Market TASTY VARIATIONS… Depending on the region in France, people will finalise the batter with a personal touch, to make it tastier. In Brittany, we add a shot of brut cider or even chouchen (a form of mead). In Normandy, locals will put a shot of calvados (apple brandy) in their batter, and in the North East and Alsace, people will add beer! Meanwhile, in the South of France, locals are putting rum or pastis (anise spirit) in their pancakes! It doesn’t always have to be about alcohol though, as it is always a good move to add in some honey or vanilla extract...
A RECIPE YOU MIGHT LIKE TO FOLLOW…
CRÊPE MIX WITH BRUT CIDER (15-18 crêpes) INGREDIENTS 250g plain flour 4 eggs 250ml semi-skimmed milk 300ml brut cider 30g semi salted butter METHOD In a large mixing bowl, put the flour and make a well in the centre. Crack the eggs into the middle, and start whisking from the centre, slowly drawing the flour into the eggs. Pour the cider and beat until you get a thick paste. In the meantime, in a separate pan, boil the milk with the butter. Add it to the other mix and leave it to rest for 30mins before using it.
