When I first arrived in Newcastle from Belgium, I did not know what to expect. But, after spending three weeks in NE1, I am sure of one thing: no two days are the same! NE1 is a dynamic company unlike any other. From visiting building sites with NE1 Can, to accompanying the Street Rangers, I have discovered just how dedicated NE1 are to making Newcastle a better place, and they do so every day! Working at NE1 has already shown me how brilliant Newcastle really is. Whether it’s the unique culture, the vibrant nightlife, the food, or simply looking around, there is something for everyone. Newcastle is a city filled with charm and excitement, and the Geordies are as surprising as well! The people are warm and welcoming, and I have had a wonderful experience so far (although I still have to get used to the accent)! I am certain that there is still a lot to discover and experience, and I can’t wait to show my mother around when she comes to visit this fantastic city. Alym Benhidjeb NE1 Intern

The nights are getting lighter and summer is in sight. With that in mind, we’ve got our heads in holiday brochures, searching for our next summer getaway. Our friends at Thomas Cook know it’s not easy to fork out all the funds in one go, so they’re making life simpler with easy to manage, monthly direct debit payments on selected holidays. Book your next trip in store now with just a £50pp deposit and pay monthly as you count down the days to the big trip! Sunglasses, hats and flip flops at the ready… it’s time to get planning for the summer season ahead! Pop in and see the team on Northumberland Street, or give them a call on 0191 6911911.
We’d like to introduce our NE1 readers to Discovery School, a 13-19 school in the centre of Newcastle, specialising in STEM: science, technology, engineering and maths. International Women’s Day falls on 8th March this year, and with women still vastly underrepresented in the STEM field despite their talents, we’re reaching out to the female students of tomorrow. Careers in STEM range from mathematicians, engineers, architects, and scientists, to working with special effects, sound engineering, physiotherapy, healthcare roles, medical, software design and so much more! Pop along to the Discovery School's Open Evening on Wednesday 14th March and see for yourself what makes this thriving industry tick. With great teachers and great facilities, Discovery School is the place to be for budding STEM students. discoveryschool.org.uk
SHORTLISTED SMASHBURGER!
One of our favourite city centre burger joints is smashing it in the UK National Burger Awards 2018! intu Eldon Square’s Smashburger has been named as a finalist for the National Burger Awards, hosted by Casual Dining Magazine. The NE1 restaurant will be hoping to impress the judges, delivering maximum burger happiness with every bite of their Triple Hot Triple Double burger. What’s in it? Two beef patties, two slices of American cheese and one slice of aged cheddar. It’s the beefiest, cheesiest burger in town and we can’t wait to try it for ourselves. smashburger.com
CHINESE TEA CEREMONY This February we quite literally painted the town red with the Chinese New Year celebrations. We marked The Year of the Dog in style in NE1 with dragon-dancing, a traditional Chinese lion parade, flag wavers and themed floats. To coincide with the vibrant celebrations, La Yuan hosted a traditional Chinese Tea ceremony and menu. The restaurant is the first venue in the North East to offer classic Chinese Tea Ceremonies, available with advanced bookings. The menu boasts over 15 traditional, hand-picked Chinese teas - from Oolong Tea to Flower Tea, there’s something for all tastes and preferences. layuan.co.uk

5 MINS WITH KARA LILY HAYWORTH
Kara Lily Hayworth - plays Cilla in the allsinging, all-dancing stage production of the same name at the Theatre Royal, Newcastle from 27 February - 3 March. First time on the Toon? Yes, I've never been before! Have you brought your coat? Yes, it's very chilly, always gotta have a big scarf too to keep my neck warm. I have a big fluffy teddy bear coat! NE1 plans? Well we don't have a whole lot of time off to explore unfortunately, but I've heard the shopping is great. I love a good vintage store! I've heard a lot about Grainger Market, so I can’t wait to escape for a bit and have a look around all the stalls. Favourite Geordie? It has to be the comedian, Sarah Millican. She's hilarious. What would you be doing if you weren’t here now? Probably tucked up at home with my hubby and my cats. A fun fact? I'm not a real redhead. Shhhh!! theatreroyal.co.uk

TEAM NE1 CATCH UP WITH 8-YEAR-OLD BELLA PATTERSON FROM GOSFORTH, WHO IN LIGHT OF INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY, SMILES FOR A PHOTOGRAPH IN HER GREAT, GREAT GRANDMOTHER’S SUFFRAGETTE PROTEST ‘VOTES FOR WOMEN’ SASH. International Women’s Day is a day dedicated to celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. At the forefront of cutting edge thinking, it’s important that we recognise the aspirational women who have #PressedForProgress over the years. There has never been a more important time to recognise equality and women’s inspiring movements; from female political leaders and motivational speakers, to the inspiring women of times gone by, who gained the right to vote and campaigned together to make a change. One victory led to another and a century later, we should savour the triumph! And thanks to the actions of these inspiring female figures, we are able to stand proudly alongside Bella, who is comfortable knowing she can grow up to be anything she wants to be.

Dining in style Newcastle’s Marco Pierre White Steakhouse, Bar and Grill is a real treat when it comes to city centre dining. Good food, done good!
If you’re looking for something a little fancy, but in a relaxed environment, then this one is a foodie bucket list must! The white table cloth approach to dining here makes it something of an occasion restaurant - but it doesn’t have to be that way, we’re in for a casual Monday munch. The space is ultra stylish with splashes of colour injecting a bit of fun into the interiors. And the same goes for the food and the vibe.
Fine dining in a chilled out atmosphere and quality food served by nice people. We swoop straight inside and we’re seated in a cosy booth - feeling worlds away from the drizzly Monday we’ve escaped for the afternoon. A midday lunch date means sparkling water is our sip of choice, filled up every time we slurp below the line thanks to our bubbly waiter. We bypass the bread and olives, and go straight in for the starters. It’s the potted duck (£8.50) for myself, served with green peppercorns and cornichons. Every last flavoursome bite is scooped up with chunks of toasted sourdough. My lunch date goes for the classic French onion soup, served with croutons and Gruyère cheese (£6.95) - a comforting classic that does just the trick on a chilly afternoon. As the place fills up with lunch buddies and tribes of afternoon tea peeps, we move on to the main course. I opt for the roast chicken à la forestiére (£16.50). A fricassée of wild
mushrooms, tender chicken and mouthwatering Madeira roasting juices. My pal picks the grilled 35 day aged sirloin (£27.95), served with irresistible fries and peppercorn sauce (£3.50).
