FRESH FROM THE PRESS
After 12 years with NE1 it’s a great privilege to be able to ‘sign off’ as Chief Executive in the pages of our ever-popular and informative ‘go to’ sheet for everything that’s brilliant about Newcastle. It’ll be even better when we can start shouting again about the last few businesses that, up to now, have had to stay shut. That is soon to change and not before time. Newcastle needs World Headquarters, and all of our other fab night spots, back up and running. All I’d ask then is, please, as soon as we’re allowed put on your dancing shoes and get out there. Even if, like me, you consider yourself a bit past all that – then make it a retro night with a few friends and get along for a nostalgic big night out. And I mean ‘Out Out’! The people who run our clubs have had a really tough time of it and you can be sure they’re ready to give you a great welcome back. Elsewhere in these pages you’ll find all the exciting news about what else is going on in town. There’s plenty - and with more fantastic, fun and family friendly things to come over the Summer. We’re looking forward to seeing you. ADRIAN WADDELL CHIEF EXECUTIVE

NEW IN NE1
Word on the street EXCITING INSIGHTS AND EXCLUSIVE NEWS FROM ACROSS THE TOON THIS SUMMER... FAREWELL ADRIAN - NE1'S CHIEF EXECUTIVE HANDS OVER THE REINS
As NE1’s Chief Executive, Adrian Waddell, presides over his last NE1 magazine before moving on, we want to take this time to recognise his achievements and thank him for his efforts. Having taken over at NE1 in the lead-up to the all-important BID vote (the 5-yearly opportunity for businesses to vote as to whether NE1 should continue to exist!), not only did Adrian ensure NE1 were renewed for 5 more years, he presided over a record-breaking success, with over 87% of city-centre businesses voting in favour, hurrah! From there one might have thought life would get easier, but within 18 months the world was turned upside down as the pandemic hit. Not only did Adrian steer NE1 through this incredibly turbulent time, he also ensured we offered huge amounts of support and assistance for beleaguered businesses, many of whom have passed on their sincere thanks to Adrian in particular for his personal time and efforts. With the future looking brighter Adrian has decided that the time is right to pass the torch on, and leaves NE1 in a strong position, and for that we thank him enormously. A faithful and dedicated member of the team, who ended up leading it, and served many years at NE1 tirelessly trying to help businesses and improve the city, we think he has been an incredible asset and had an immeasurable impact on the future of Newcastle. You’ll be sorely missed here at NE1 Adrian, and we thank you. We’ve rounded up some farewell messages for Adrian, so when he opens this page for the first time, he’ll see just how important he was to NE1’s success and how well regarded he is across the city. “It has been a pleasure to work with Adrian. His enthusiasm and commitment have been exceptional. He leaves the organisation and our City in better shape, and well placed. I, and every member of the Board, wishes Adrian and his family well for the future and we thank him for all he and the NE1 team have achieved.” Adam Serfontein Chairman, NE1 Board “The Cathedral project has really benefited from Adrian being on our Delivery Board and we have been fortunate to have his wisdom and shrewdness to help guide us. We cannot thank him enough and we wish him all the best.” Kate Sussams Newcastle Cathedral “I found that people like Adrian have been a beacon of support, guidance and most of all a pair of ears that will listen to your voice. Sometimes that’s all people need when they feel lost in dire times!" "Adrian heard our voice at Orbis, Commercial Union House and acted on it! I will always be incredibly thankful for his support.” Jonpaul Kirvan Co - director Orbis & Ampersand Inventions “We’d like to wish Adrian every success for whatever the future may hold and thank him for his outstanding efforts in helping to develop Newcastle into the vibrant city it is today. Everyone here at the Allies Group wishes Adrian a happy, healthy and prosperous future and thank him for his unwavering dedication.” Chris March and Debi Coldwell Allies Group

NEWCASTLE POISED TO BE FIRST CITY IN UK TO END ROUGH SLEEPING FOR GOOD
We’re shouting from the rooftops about the incredible work going on in Newcastle at the moment to tackle homelessness! A vibrant, city centre installation consisting of over 2,000 balloons was displayed inside the former Starbucks unit on Grainger Street, and it marked the incredible progress made by Street Zero and YOU to soon help Newcastle become one of the first UK cities to help end rough sleeping for good. The individual balloons are emblazoned with names of those who have pledged online, along with messages calling for Newcastle to be one of the first UK cities to end rough sleeping. Pop by and take a look, and whilst we've got your attention, you can join the countdown to zero and pledge your name too by visiting the link below. streetzero.org

VAULKHARD GROUP STRIKE MAJOR VENUE DEAL!
Word on the street is that The Vaulkhard Group have expanded their nightlife portfolio by acquiring seven of Newcastle’s most-loved venues! A major deal for some of the city’s finest watering holes, the family run firm has taken ownership of The Town Wall, The Bridge Tavern, Beeronomy, the former Offshore 44, Bob Trollops, Redhouse and the Beehive! We can’t wait to see what directors Ollie and Harry Vaulkhard have up their sleeves when it comes to these beloved NE1 venues.
PAT RITCHIE STEPS DOWN FROM CITY COUNCIL
Round of applause for Newcastle City Council’s Chief Executive Pat Richie, who has announced that she has stepped down after eight and a half years in the role. Pat made history in 2013 as the city’s first female Chief Executive and was awarded a CBE in the 2020 New Year’s Honors list for her services to local government and public service reform. Best of luck for the future Pat!

GOING TO GREAT LENGTHS…
Talk about making a splash! Newcastle’s historic City Baths are weeks away from reopening to the public, and this beautifully restored venue will be welcoming the city’s fitness fans and spa-lovers to a state-ofthe-art place to kick-back, pump some iron and make a splash. Following a mighty £7.5 million makeover, the Grade II Listed venue has been brought back to life - only this time as a marvellous modernday spa and leisure destination, fit for 21st century use. Inside you’ll discover a thoughtful blend of old and new; modern facilities and slick equipment, complemented by the charming original features we might recognise from years gone by. For those wanting to feel the burn and dive into a workout, the City Baths also comes complete with a striking two storey glass-fronted studio, as well as an impressive arena of the latest gym and training equipment. This bold new venue also offers a jam-packed calendar of group exercise classes every week including Fusion’s bespoke HIIT and functional training classes, INTENCITY and popular Les Mills classes. city-baths.co.uk

OLD ALLIED IRISH BANK BUILDING TO BE TRANSFORMED INTO NEW LEISURE HOTSPOT!
The Toon keeps on raking in the transformational developments! We’re buzzing to learn that the Grade II Listed former Allied Irish Bank building on Collingwood Street is set to become a multi-million pound mixed residential and hospitality hotspot! Part of the plans will see developers, Portland Real Estate Group, transform the site into a stunning bar featuring a lush mezzanine level. Visitors will be able to dine out in an opulent restaurant that can cater up to 100 diners. What’s more? There’ll be twelve serviced apartments built above on the first and third floors, providing accommodation to meet demand for city centre living space. An on-site concierge, a state-of-the-art gym and cycle storage are also planned as part of the project, which will see the building’s beautiful existing frontage and historic infrastructure retained. We'll keep you up to date with more developments as they come in. Exciting stuff!
THIS IS FOR THE NHS LINE-UP CONFIRMED!
Heads up NHS heroes! This Is Tomorrow Festival organisers have just confirmed an epic line-up for their NHS event taking place on 16 September in Exhibition Park, and headlining this mega line-up are none other than Madchester legends, James! They’ll be supported by Liverpudlian pop-icons, Lightning Seeds, grunge-pop trio Cruel Hearts Club and one of the North East’s most promising rising stars, Beth Macari. Set to sparkle away in late-summer, 10,000 tickets have already been snapped up and further tickets will be available for free for the NHS. The show doesn’t end there folks! Tickets are flying out for Newcastle’s beloved This Is Tomorrow festival! Boasting a brilliant line-up, the Toon’s premier indie fest is whistling back into Exhibition Park on 17, 18 and 19 September this year - and soon, the likes of Dermot Kennedy, Gerry Cinnamon and Geordie icon Sam Fender will all be (literally) strutting their stuff and striking many a chord with thousands of festival goers! THE TOWN WALL IS BACK IN ACTION
Rejoice! The Town Wall has announced that after 266 days closed due to the obvious, that this brilliant watering hole has finally opened its doors again and they’re welcoming patrons from far and wide to reacquaint themselves with chilled pints of Camden Hells, delicious gastro bait and cool tunes. You’ll find this epic venue over on Pink Lane and you’ll catch us here for the foreseeable future! thetownwall.com
A NEW ERA DAWNS FOR TYNESIDE CINEMA…
Brilliant news for Tyneside Cinema folks! They've just announced the appointment of three new people to their leadership team as the iconic city cinema edges closer to reopening. Duncan Kerr joins as the new Head of Operations. He is joined by Dan Lauder as Operations Manager and Lori Casson, who is taking up the new role of People Manager. All three are brilliant additions to the team and we're certain they'll be instrumental in the successful reopening of the much-loved venue as it prepares to welcome back audiences this summer. It's going to be so good to be finally back inside this beautiful cinema, so keep your eyes peeled for when this iconic figure in North East cinema is up and running again! tynesidecinema.co.uk
HOI POLLOI WIN DOUBLE GOLD AT NATIONAL BARBER AWARDS!
We may be biased, but we think Newcastle is one of the finest spots in the UK to get a male MOT and it seems that an esteemed barber magazine agrees! We’ve recently learned that Steve Chapman and his trusty team at The Hoi Polloi have beaten thousands of barbershops across the UK to be named the best in class for both Best Customer Experience and Best Team at the Modern Barber awards in Brighton! A stellar achievement after such an incredibly difficult year for the health and beauty sector, the boys (this is the best part for us!) were secretly nominated by their clientele for their outstanding service, unrivalled atmosphere and most importantly, fresh haircuts. What an achievement team - congrats! instagram.com/thehoipolloiuk

Toon-inspired treats
NATIONAL GEORDIE DAY FALLS ON 16 JULY THIS YEAR AND WE'RE SHOUTING ABOUT THE MANY FOODIE ICONS TO COME FROM OUR BEAUTIFUL CITY. FROM ‘GEORDIE CAVIAR’ TO THE TRUSTY SAUSAGE ROLL, THESE ARE THE NEWCASTLE-INSPIRED TREATS THAT HAVE HELPED SHAPE OUR REGION... TOON TREAT:
Pease pudding
TOON TREAT:
Lindisfarne oysters
TASTE IT AT: Saltwater Fish Company Lindisfarne oysters are one of the region's oldest foodstuffs! Originating back in the 14th century when monks first set up oyster beds in the waters at Holy Island, these seafood sensations are one of life’s greatest pleasures and luckily for you, they can be found in abundance at Saltwater Fish Company for just £1.40 each. They can be eaten raw, served on the half shell with a little lemon juice and black pepper or a dash of Tobasco sauce - whatever your preference, it would be rude not to knock a few of these back come National Geordie Day! saltwaterfish.co.uk
TOON TREAT: Saveloy dip TASTE IT AT: Dicksons The saveloy dip elevates the usual sausage sandwich to something special. Beginning with a bread bun sliced in half and dipped in gravy, this bundle of joy is then spread with a generous layer of pease pudding, before a piping hot saveloy sausage (or two!) and a delicious dollop of sage and onion stuffing is added. Round it off with a slither of English mustard and voila, Newcastle’s iconic saveloy dip is born and waiting to be devoured. Dicksons, the Grainger Street family butcher, is the place to visit if you’re keen on trying one of these bad boys! midickson.com TOON TREAT: Stottie TASTE IT AT: Pink Lane Bakery Ah, the humble stottie! A simple, flour creation that stands the test of time and is still a vital component to any Geordie sandwich. Imagine your typical bun but on a much bigger scale and you're somewhere near to understanding how big this beautiful bit of bread actually is. Fresh from the oven, stotties usually measure in around 12 inches across and nearly two inches thick, and this beautifully dense bread derives its name from the Northumbrian local word ‘stott’ (meaning ‘to bounce’). One of the best parts about the stottie? You can pretty much stuff a stottie with whatever kind of filling you like! So, with Pink Lane Bakery renowned for creating some beautiful super-sized stotties, they’re the place to visit when National Geordie Day rolls around. facebook.com/pinklbakery
TASTE IT AT: Frankie & Tony’s Sandwich Bar You simply can’t knock a bit of Geordie caviar! The importance of pease pudding in Geordie cuisine cannot be underestimated and it’s a sacred sandwich filling to thousands across NE1. Made by boiling split yellow peas with a joint of ham before draining and mashing into a hummus-like paste, it’s a beloved local treat that can be found at Frankie & Tony’s Sandwich Bar on Ridley Place. There's no gimmicks here, just a brilliant deli serving up stunning ham and pease pudding sarnies - yes please! facebook.com/ frankie-tonys-sandwich-bar TOON TREAT:
Newcastle Brown Ale
TOON TREAT: Sausage roll TASTE IT AT: Greggs You simply can’t knock a trusty sausage roll from the Toon’s biggest pastry exports, Greggs! A true national treasure, many have appointed Greggs as the (unofficial) 'King of Sausage Rolls' and it’s not hard to see why! Freshly baked at their 11 stores dotted across the city, this Geordie classic is made from seasoned sausage meat wrapped in layers of crisp, golden puff pastry, as well as a large dollop of TLC! We're drooling just thinking about it. And with a vegan option too, our trusty friends at Greggs like to ensure that everyone can get their sausage roll fix. Whether it's a grab-and-go lunch, a Screen on the Green snack or a treat for a loved one, you simply can't go wrong! greggs.co.uk
TASTE IT AT: CentrAle It wouldn’t be a complete Toon inspired treat list without two bottles of Broon, would it? Grab yourself an iconic blue star emblazoned bottle from CentrAle, an independent real ale shop located in - you guessed it - Central Station and kick back with a few bottles of this liquid gold as National Geordie Day swings into action! The world-famous Newcastle Brown Ale was launched in 1927 and this iconic brew is perhaps one of the Toon’s most recognisable exports! After three years of perfecting his recipe, Colonel Jim Porter (yes - the bar on Dean Street is named after him!) released Newcastle Brown Ale to the world and his new creation quickly became one of the world's most-loved beverages. Wylam Brewery have unveiled their own take on Newcastle Brown Ale with their 'Painting the Toon Broon' recently too. It’s a delicious creation that sees a quirky take on the typical Brown Ale brewing method. This particular craft beauty adds Canadian maple syrup to create a delicious take on a pint of Broon! facebook.com/centralebeer
TOON TREAT: Craster kippers TASTE IT AT: Quay Ingredient You can’t knock a kipper or two, especially when our chums at Quay Ingredient are serving up grilled Craster Kippers with lemon parsley for just £5.95! Originating from the beautiful fishing town of Craster, up the road in Northumberland, these little beauties are widely regarded as the finest kippers in the UK and they’re renowned for their stunning smokey taste. Time for you to head to Quay Ingredient and find out why these regional treats are held in such high regard! quayingredient.co.uk
Don’t forget! One of Newcastle’s greatest gifts to the world, and the very reason your baked goods rise so delightfully, is all
down to a North-Eastern native, Thomas Bell, who produced the world’s first self-raising flour having started up his business in a yard off the Groat Market, right in the heart of NE1. Now there’s someone to celebrate on National Geordie Day!

Newcastle Fringe Festival with Erin Connor
Erin's pick of the bunch
HURRAH! NEWCASTLE FRINGE FESTIVAL IS WHISTLING INTO ALPHABETTI THIS SUMMER FOR TWO WEEKS OF ACTION-PACKED THEATRE PERFORMANCES AND COOL CULTURE PRODUCTIONS NE1 caught up with Erin Connor, the Assistant Producer for Alphabetti Theatre's Newcastle Fringe Festival, to find out more about this year’s celebrations…
What can you tell us about the origins of Newcastle Fringe? Newcastle Fringe Festival is a two week-long festival taking place at Alphabetti Theatre from 27 July - 7 August. We wanted to create a fringe event in Newcastle during the summer and create a buzz about the incredible artists and small-scale touring work that is being made across the UK. How have you overcome challenges to get Newcastle Fringe Festival ready for people to safely enjoy? Through every step of planning the festival, we’ve put the audiences, artists and the festival team’s safety first. We want everyone to enjoy the festival and the only way to do that is safely. We’ve designed the entire event with social distancing in mind. Something we decided at the beginning
Poster credit: Jonjo O'Connor
was that, as well as having the shows performed live, we would stream performances online. We want everyone to be able to enjoy the events, and we understand that some people might not feel safe visiting, so we would bring the festival to them.
Chop, Dissolve, Burn by Richard Boggie and Lisette Auton - Richard and Lisette were awarded a Newcastle Fringe Festival commission to start making this show and will be sharing a rehearsed reading of the first stages of their work.
What can people expect from this year’s event? We’ve got critically-acclaimed theatre that has toured around the country and new shows that have been made in lockdown. The festival will be the first time we are presenting work on the D’Addario Stage at Alphabetti Theatre. The D’Addario stage is where the Fringe audiences will be seeing all of the live music we have planned as well as some performances from local, North East-based talent. All tickets for Newcastle Fringe Festival are 'pay what you feel'. Tell us more about this initiative… At Alphabetti, we have been championing 'pay what you feel' events in the region for a number of years now. At the core of Alphabetti is our belief that great art is for everyone, regardless of financial circumstance - and Newcastle Fringe Festival is exactly the same. We want everyone to be able to come and see a show - or watch online - without worrying if they can afford it. If people can only afford a certain amount, that is absolutely fine; and if some audience members can afford to pay a bit more, it all goes towards covering the cost of the festival. What does Newcastle Fringe Festival mean to creatives from across the North East? Newcastle Fringe Festival is just as much for the artists as it is for the audiences. COVID has seen so many artists and freelancers lose out on work and struggle to get jobs, and it has had a devastating impact on creatives in the North East. We wanted to give creatives an opportunity to reconnect with each other and explore how to work together to rebuild going forward! newcastlefringe.co.uk
Good Grief by Ugly Bucket - Fast paced and laugh-out-loud funny, every time Ugly Bucket comes to Alphabetti Theatre they sell out, so book quickly!
39 Horses by Izaak Gledhill - This show about your typical taxi journey is for one bubble at a time and literally takes place inside a real taxi. A unique experience and a must-see!

24 JULY
Northern Pride has always been the leading light when it comes to celebrating the North East’s LGBTQ+ community. Can you talk us through some of the local talent taking to the stage this year? The event will also shine a spotlight on local performers, including dance and house duo Ibiza Soul, singersongwriter Sophia Flanaghan and Afro-Latin percussion and brass duo, Ladies of Midnight Blue. Also taking to the virtual stage are indie rock band St Buryan, rapper Kay Greyson and singer-songwriter Michael T Ogilvie. Not-for-profit LGBTQ+ arts organisation, Curious Arts, are supporting the event with dance performances from Jesse Salamon and Toi Toi Guy, along with Love_ Dance by Adam Russell Dance and spoken word pieces including Bridget Hamilton’s love poem to the North East, ‘Proud Geordie’. We've got all of that, plus lots of local drag artists also taking centre stage this year, including Drag Idol 2021 winner Frida Sapphic, her 2019 predecessor, Choriza May, and Penni T.

What can you tell us about Newcastle's music scene right now? Austin: I don’t think it’s any exaggeration to say Newcastle’s music scene can go toe to toe with any other major city in the UK, which when you take into account its size, is all the more impressive! It’s great to see artists getting recognised by national entities like BBC Radio 1 and Clash Magazine more frequently too. Alex: Yeah, the scene is thriving like never before. It was always doing well and there’s always been an abundance of talent - just maybe some of that talent was a little too far north for the suits to take notice. Your favourite NE1 venue and why? Conor: This one is TOUGH! Head of Steam will always hold a place in my heart as I spent a lot of time cutting my teeth there. I think The Cluny is really special and there’s something about going through the double doors and looking down at the main floor area with all the people and the lights going down that always gets me. Austin: It’s too early to tell if it’s my favourite, but I want to go to more shows at Boiler Shop. I’ve only really been a couple of times, but the lighting rig blew me away when i was watching The Horrors a while back! You’re out and about in the city with a full day ahead of you. Where are you heading for food, drink, a spot of shopping and a dash of culture? Conor: For a quick bite that just hits every time, it’s going to have to be two vegan sausage rolls from Greggs (obviously)! I’m a huge vinyl fan, so
I'd scope out Reflex and Beyond Vinyl and then maybe do a bit of charity shopping. For some culture, I like the peace and quiet of BALTIC and everybody slowly walking around arms behind their back doing what I like to call the ‘art gallery shuffle’. Austin: I might treat myself to a nice sit-down affair at town’s finest eatery, Wetherspoons. I’d probably drop into Waterstones and loiter around the photography section for a while. For culture, I want to visit the Side Gallery a lot more. I've only been once but I'm a lot deeper into my photography obsession now, so I guess I'll also be doing the ‘art gallery shuffle’ essentially. Alex: If it’s to start the day kinda vibe, I’m probably hitting up Blake’s on Grey Street for one of their brekkies. I love the Grainger Market because there’s this sick band merch stall where they sell loads of Zeppelin, Queen, The Hives and Black Sabbath t-shirts. Shoutout to Pizza By The Slice and Meat:Stack too. What's your in-the-know NE1 secret? Conor: When everything was closed last year and there wasn't really anything else to do except walk, I pretty much mapped out all the secret backstairs and cool side streets in the city centre. That basically means if you need to get from the top of town to the Quayside in 45 seconds, I'm your guy! Is that sad? It probably is... Alex: The lad who works behind the counter at the newly-opened North Shore Coffee Co. makes one the best flat whites in Newcastle. facebook.com/motelcarnation

We're rolling it back to the 19th century. Picture the scene, the industrial revolution is in full swing and Newcastle, an iconic merchant city back then, is booming with coal trade. Union leaders and coal bosses were desperately searching for a way to increase production to meet a growing demand. Something revolutionary, something ingenious and something transformative was required - and boy, did they get it on 25 July 1814! Enter local hero and brilliant engineer, George Stephenson. An engine wright who worked at Killingworth Colliery, George had created the ground-breaking Blücher locomotive - or commonly known today as Blutcher. Named in honour of the Prussian General von Blüche, this nifty contraption was the world’s first fully-effective steam railway locomotive and it was capable of hauling eight fully-loaded, 30 ton wagons at a speed of four miles per hour! Newcastle has always been home to world firsts and it’s a creative hub that has always been at the epicenter for transformative change across the globe - what a brilliant gift to the world!
