Firstly, hello all, I’m Matthew and I’m fortunate enough to be part of the fantastic creative team who help produce this glorious publication. And quicker than you can say *DieHardisaChristmasfilm*, a raft of festive affairs has snook upon us and the Toon has transformed into a winter wonderland. We’re certain that the festivities have started even earlier this year, but we’re not complaining really! It doesn’t seem long ago that I was clutching mam’s hand, being whisked down Northumberland Street two inches off the ground as we hurried to join the queue for Fenwick’s Christmas Window. This was in 2003, the theme that year was Santa’s Workshop and I can still feel the icy breeze race past my chubby seven-year-old cheeks. Oh the memories! We’re unashamedly big on Christmastime here at NE1 and why wouldn’t we be when Newcastle has so much going on? With Fenwick window primed, John Lewis’ new Christmas Emporium looking sublime, the return of Life's Ice Rink and a dazzling array of market traders arriving at Grey’s Monument, Christmas in NE1 is shaping up to be something truly special this year. So, round up your loved ones and hit the street this November. It’s time to make new memories with NE1’s twinkling Christmas offering... MATTHEW THOMAS EDITOR GET INTO NEWCASTLE MAGAZINE

ALL SAINTS CHURCH CLAIMS TOP PRIZE AT PRESTIGIOUS ARCHITECTURE COMPETITION!
Huge news coming from Pilgrim Street, as it’s just been revealed that the incredible restoration project at All Saints Church has claimed first place at a prestigious, National Architecture Awards ceremony! Claiming first prize in the 'Restoration of a Georgian Church of Chapel' category of the 2021 Georgian Group Architectural Awards, All Saints Church had been placed on the ‘Heritage at Risk’ register since 2011. That was until Doonan Architects began work on a comprehensive repair and restoration programme that included roof alterations, repairs to 225-year-old windows, new flooring, along with some interior changes to create modern facilities. Completed in 1796 by David Stephenson, All Saints Church is the only elliptical church in England and we’re delighted to see this beautiful building given a new lease of life with the painstaking work recognised nationally. NEWCASTLE CIVIC CENTRE UNVEILS ARCHITECTURAL PHENOMENON 14 NOVEMBER 1968
Ahead of its time and revolutionary in design, Newcastle Civic Centre flung open its doors to the general public on 14 November 1968 following an official visit from King Olav V of Norway! Hailed as a wonder of the architectural world, Newcastle Civic Centre raked in critical praise from across the globe as G W Kenyon (City Architect for the city back then!) unveiled a ground-breaking, modernist design that has since become a landmark building for the Toon. Striking architectural features include twelve bronze seahorse heads that sit proudly above a brilliant copper green tower, a twenty-five bell carillon, an elliptical council chamber on stilts and nine huge flambeaux spanning the entrance! So, next time you’re out and about on your dinner break, pass through the shadow of the magnificent bronze casting of the River God Tyne and into the most prestigious building in the city for a truly unforgettable red carpet experience. newcastle.gov.uk Did you know that Eldon Garden had to incorporate the existing pub, now called the Three Bulls Heads into its plan? A beloved watering hole, this iconic Toon pub was underpinned and supported whilst its roof was removed and rebuilt so that it was structurally independent of the shopping centre!
ELDON GARDEN SHOPPING CENTRE OPENED BY PRINCESS MARGARET 17 NOVEMBER 1989
The soaring popularity of Eldon Square meant that a new shopping centre featuring an eclectic mix of independents, high-street names, eateries and leisure facilities was constructed in 1989 as the Toon’s shopping scene skyrocketed. Developed on the site of the historic Handyside Arcade and featuring the original roof structure, work on Eldon Garden Shopping Centre began in 1988 as the city welcomed new stores, a raft of restaurants and a 477 space car-park. Shoppers arrived at the mall in March 1989 and Eldon Garden received an official opening by Princess Margaret on 17 November 1989.

IT SEEMS NOVEMBER HAS ALWAYS BEEN A PRESTIGIOUS TIME IN NEWCASTLE! FROM ROYAL VISITS, HONORARY DOCTORATES AND OFFICIAL OPENINGS, WE'VE TAKEN A DEEP DIVE INTO THE ARCHIVES TO SHED LIGHT ON SOME SPECIAL MOMENTS IN NE1 HISTORY… DR MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. AWARDED HONORARY DOCTORATE FROM NEWCASTLE UNIVERSITY 13 NOVEMBER 1967
A seminal moment in Toon history arrived on 13 November 1967, as Dr Martin Luther King Jr. was made an Honorary Doctor of Civil Law by Image: Newcastle University Newcastle University! The only UK university to offer such an accolade during his lifetime, the occasion was made all the more remarkable by the fact that Dr King took time to visit the Toon to receive his award in-person, despite only being in the UK for 24 hours during a frenetic schedule of commitments and campaigning. Held in King's Hall, Dr King received his degree from His Grace the Duke of Northumberland, and then gave an acceptance speech to awestruck onlookers, the spellbound audience listened to his words on racial justice! ncl.ac.uk
QUEEN ELIZABETH II BRIDGE OFFICIALLY OPENED BY HER MAJESTY 6 NOVEMBER 1981
Lizzy made the trip up North back in 1981 as she arrived in Newcastle to officially open the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge. Part of the game-changing Tyne and Wear Metro project that was underway in our region, work on this Toon thoroughfare began in 1976 from each bank of the River Tyne as engineers had the unenviable job of ensuring both structures perfectly aligned with one another - an extraordinary feat of engineering considering the limited technology back then! The Queen Elizabeth II Bridge was finished in 1978 and officially opened by her majesty on 6 November 1981, nine days before Metro welcomed its first passengers!

A Slice of
Havana TUCKED AWAY ON HOOD STREET, CASTRO'S IS ONE OF THE TOON’S SWANKIEST SPOTS WHEN IT COMES TO COLOURFUL COCKTAILS, AUTHENTIC CUBAN FLAVOURS AND A VIBRANT ATMOSPHERE. NE1 POPPED IN FOR A TREMENDOUS TASTING EXPERIENCE... Castro’s is the place for small plates, sharing platters and authentic Cuban mains that offer a delicious mix of dishes, flavours and tipples unlike anywhere else in the city. Taking over the former site of Beeronomy, the team have made their mark on this old bank vault and we can confirm it is a grand design. It's enticing and intimate without that sense you're sitting on top of fellow diners, with a vibrant finish that makes for a cosy affair. With access to some of the best Cuban produce around, food here is topnotch. We kicked things off with a pick of delectable nibbles - jalapeño bites (£4.50), rum-soaked chicken (£4.50) and pan-fried calamari (£4.50) with zingy green chilli, fresh lime and ginger shavings, topped with garlic
idyllic ice cream float topped with rum punch, chunks of pineapple, cacao nibs, meringue and a healthy dollop of rum & raisin ice cream. There’s a palette-cleansing wild berry & mango sorbet (£6.50) to sample, a seriously indulgent dark chocolate mousse (£6.50) if you still have space for more, and a bowl of warm, cinnamon churros (£6.50) with dulce
de leche dipping sauce that'll send you on your merry way. All in all, a cool new hangout packed full of Latin vibes, good people and tasty treats. Next up, a tasty meat and fish (£20) sharing plate packed with octopus, pulled pork croquettes, river shrimp, squid and patatas bravas with a sumptuous side of garlicky mojo verde to dip away at. So moreish! Into your tipples? You'll love it at Castro’s, as cocktails are the name of the game here. The blood orange mai tai (£8) is deliciously sweet and packs a tangy punch, the el solero (£8) is delightful and brimming with mango flavours, and the pineapple mimosa (£7.50) is a fizzy creation of the highest quality. After devouring our way through sharing plates and small dishes, we dive into Castro’s take on a ropa vieja (£12) a Cuban classic that features heaps of slow-cooked shredded beef, refried kidney beans, yellow rice, sautéed peppers and fried onions. A truly standout dish! Those into sweet treats are in luck and Castro’s signature dish, the Cuban sundae (£6.50), is sublime. It’s an

WE CAUGHT UP WITH GEORDIE COMEDY HERO GAVIN WEBSTER AHEAD OF HIS HUGE SHOW AT TYNE THEATRE & OPERA HOUSE ON NOVEMBER 12! This gig is going to be your first time back at Tyne Theatre since 2015, are you looking forward to hitting the big stage again? Oh yes! It’s easily the best theatre in the country, the bounce-back of laughter from the crowd is terrific and it looks like a giant wedding cake. Is the Tyne Theatre a venue you enjoy coming back to? Definitely! It’s central as well. It means people from Gateshead and the West End of Newcastle can come as it’s not far to travel so it works out great! You've been performing since 1993, but do you still get nervous when you get behind the mic? A bit, yes. It’s always important to get the first laugh so the first 10 to 15 seconds are always nerve-racking for me.

What's your favourite thing about performing in Newcastle? I like the fact that the people love surreal stuff and crash bang wallop jokes. It’s like they understand that it’s all rubbish really, it’s not about life, it’s about performing, being silly
and having a good time. It’s amazing how many cities aren’t like that in terms of audience participation. Where's your go-to place for pre and post-gig scran? Places such as Dabbawal and the Chinese restaurants on Stowell Street are favourite feeding grounds. I love dining at Lebanese restaurants so places such as Wafi Lounge always go down a treat. Favourite place for a pint in the Toon? I’m also a fan of Bacchus, The Crown Posada and The Bridge Tavern. What's your favourite vunder-used Geordie saying and why? 'Less it ye'. I’ve not heard people say that for years! Finally, you often get to perform with lots of exciting up and coming comedians. Is there anyone that stands out as a future star to you on the circuit right now? Louise Young is very funny and from the North East. Nationally there’s a fella called Julian Deane who’s got wonderful jokes. A very funny lad!
PAUL CHOWDHRY: FAMILY-FRIENDLY COMEDIAN 7 NOVEMBER
Psst! Paul is lying, he’s not a family friendly comedian at all! But, he is an extremely funny one and his brand new show will hit the Theatre Royal hard this November! Loaded with two years worth of killer material, Paul is raring to put the world to rights, hilariously tackling the UK’s handling of the pandemic, the trappings of fame and his love-hate relationship with English football fans. The first ever British-Asian stand-up to sell out London’s Wembley Arena, Paul is one of the UK’s most revered comedians for a reason and we can’t wait to see him strut his stuff on stage in the Toon! theatreroyal.co.uk

AMY WINEHOUSE NORTHUMBRIA UNIVERSITY
8 November 2004
November is full to the brim with amazing acts making their way to NE1 and way back in 2004 things were no different! This month marks 17 years since the legendary Amy Winehouse played to a packed out Northumbria University Students Union! Still early in her career at this point, Amy had only just released her debut album, Frank, to critical acclaim the previous year. Belting out now-classic tracks like Stronger Than Me, Take The Box and In My Bed, Amy no doubt had the hundreds in attendance right in the palm of her hands. Little did those lucky students know, they were bearing witness to the formative years of a superstar who would go on to define a generation with her unmistakable voice and eye-opening gritty lyricism. Following the gig, The Chronicle journalist, Gordon Barr, wrote “she has the voice of a seasoned jazz performer, belying her 20 years. And she likes nothing better than going on stage.” How right Gordon was, as Amy went on to perform on the biggest stages across the globe, selling millions of records and cementing herself as one of Britain's most revered singersongwriters before her tragic passing in 2011.
