Welcome to this ‘holiday special’ edition of the NE1 Get into Newcastle Magazine! We’ve missed you and so have city centre businesses. Lockdown has been a serious test for us all, and social distancing - as the new norm - means we’ve all got to make adjustments. Wearing masks, queuing and revised street layouts do feel a bit alien. The upside though is that your favourite stores, eateries and watering holes have been working incredibly hard to make sure you can have a positive and enjoyable experience while staying safe. And the city needs your custom. So here’s your reminder about all that’s great about the city centre this summer; there’s plenty to whet the appetite. With Eat Out to Help Out to look forward to, fresh produce (and much more) from the Grainger Market, and your favourite stores and salons back up and running, it’s time to venture out. Stay safe and enjoy your city!

THE FUTURE IS FEMALE

The Life Science Centre has recently appointed Fiona Cruickshank as Chair of the Board - creating the organisation’s first all-female leadership team! A fine testament to Life’s belief in gender equality within the workplace, Fiona joins the team having amassed a formidable reputation within the pharmaceutical industry and with an OBE to her name for her services in the North East’s business sector. More great news for our city. Awesome work team - the future is looking bright! life.org.uk

During lockdown, we teamed up with Newcastle City Council and some fantastic organisations from across the city to help support children's home learning. Laptops and broadband equipment were handed to a number of pupils who would not otherwise be able to access online learning. The Council turned to us to put out a call-to-action for further support. A tremendous appeal quickly spread across the city, with businesses donating kit bags for young people to keep their laptops safe. Bags were donated by Action for Children, Newcastle United Foundation, Northumbria University, Virgin Money and many more! The work will carry on throughout the summer holidays, setting youngsters up for a fresh start in September! newcastlene1ltd.com

UP & RUNNING

A big welcome back! IT’S BEEN A LONG TIME COMING, BUT WE’RE DELIGHTED TO BE BACK EXPLORING THE SENSATIONAL CITY WE ALL CALL HOME! TEAM NE1 IS HERE TO GUIDE YOU THROUGH THE GOOD STUFF, BUT ALSO TO ENSURE YOUR VISIT IS AS SAFE AND ENJOYABLE AS POSSIBLE.

Here to help Our top tips on how to plan ahead and stay safe when visiting the city this summer.

GETTING HERE

If you can travel in without your car, please do. Walk or cycle if you're able.

KEEP YOUR DISTANCE

Remember, try to maintain a 2m distance if you can.

SHOP EARLY, OR LATE

Safety first... First things first - safety! In order to build our sparkling city back to the place we all know and love, it’s vital that we put the safety of its people and businesses first. In line with Government guidelines, we’re working with businesses to ensure all city centre establishments are set up safely, ready to welcome visitors back to the city. As businesses continue to do their bit to ensure the safety of staff and customers at all times, it’s down to us to make sure we keep the city clean and secure as we take back to the streets to enjoy all it has to offer. Here are a couple of things to remember before you head into NE1... Check business opening times: some shops, bars, restaurants and venues may be operating on reduced hours. Don’t forget your mask: face masks and coverings have been made compulsory in shops and on public transport. Hand hygiene: wash your hands before and after you head out - and carry a hand sanitiser with you if possible. Be aware of new social distancing rules: look out for one-way systems, distance markings, contactless payments and max group gathering numbers. Take your litter home: our city has had some time to rest and recharge keep it up by taking litter home with you and keeping the streets clean.

INTRODUCING: CITY HOSTS

You may have seen some friendly faces gracing the likes of Northumberland Street, Grainger Street and Blackett Street in recent weeks. Introducing Newcastle's City Hosts - on hand to explain how new social distancing measures will work, including one-way systems and queuing areas. The temporary team of volunteers are in town to make the city a safer and more enjoyable place to be, and they're available to answer any questions or concerns you may have when out and about on the streets. Newcastle City Council's team of City Hosts can be spotted in their green fleeces and caps every day from 8am - 6pm.

8 // More listings at getintonewcastle.co.uk

Avoid the busier times. Mid-morning and mid-afternoon tend to be quieter and Sunday to Thursday are the quiestest days.

GO CONTACTLESS

Many retailers would prefer contactless payments, make sure you're prepared!

BE PATIENT

Things may take longer and may not be perfect immediately. Patience, like manners, goes a long way!

CHECK AHEAD

Some places are opening, some aren't just yet. Check their website or social media channels before visiting.

GET BOOKED UP

With limited capacity most venues will need you to book a table or area, often with a deposit payable.

NO MORE NO SHOWS

Keep in mind the 'No more no shows' campaign - plans change, that's cool, just let the venue know in advance so they can offer others your table, and you can rebook for a later date if possible.

LEAVE YOUR DETAILS

One person per group may need to supply contact details for contact tracing, make sure you know who it is.

FOLLOW THE RULES

Whether it's sanitising hands or following a one-way system, watch out for signage and requests from venues.

BE KIND

Channel your inner Geordie. Smile, be friendly and remember we're all adjusting to this and finding our feet.

OUR STREET RANGER STARS! NAME: Adam Telford JOB TITLE: Team Manager

How does it feel to see people back in the city? Now that people are starting to come back into the city, it's nice to see some smiling faces again and I love nothing more than reassuring the public that we're here to help. During lockdown, the deserted streets started to feel like something from a horror movie! What were your priorities during the lockdown period? Like everyone, we had to adapt. We initiated checks on over 90 city centre premises, we watered trees and linked up with the homeless organisations to keep them informed. What would you say to people worried about returning? The Street Rangers, the police and the council are working together to ensure the city remains a safe place to visit, work and shop. What safety measures are in place? One-way systems, City Hosts - helping to guide people in the right direction, and control measures such as hand sanitisers and queuing. The NE1 Clean Team have also been keeping the city safe by sanitising frequently touched areas such as cash points, pedestrian crossings and benches.

Don’t forget to pop to Fenwick Food Hall this summer, where our friends at Mason + Rye are serving up Cream Tea Kits to take home. Expect tea, cakes, scones and more. Simply delicious shopping! fenwick.co.uk

How can the Street Rangers help? Whether it's directions, advice, cleanliness issues or anti-social behaviour, we are always happy to help. You'll see us patrolling the city in our NE1 blue jackets. Please do say hi!

BEER BUYS

Three things you’re looking forward to as the city opens up for summer? 1. Being able to go back to Trillians Rock Bar! 2. Planning ahead to see live shows at venues! 3. Some sunshine and hot weather, so we can enjoy the beer gardens!

Find hops aplenty over at CentrAle Wine Beer & Spirits Store in its spot in the heart of Central Station. Go here for beer, wine and all things fine! It’s the perfect place to shop local and stock up for some serious summer sipping. centralebeer.com

PEACE OF MIND

How Busy is Toon? A JOINT VENTURE BY NE1, NEWCASTLE CITY COUNCIL AND NEWCASTLE UNIVERSITY GIVES YOU PEACE OF MIND BEFORE YOU HEAD INTO THE CITY THIS SUMMER. HERE’S ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW... the good old traffic light system. Red indicates high footfall, amber shows an average footfall and green means there's plenty of space. It's a great way to help you decide when the best times to visit the city may be.

The brand new ‘How Busy is Toon’ Beta Test website is your new best friend when it comes to getting out and about in the ‘new normal’. Designed to put minds at rest and reassure visitors that the city is a safe place to be with all social distancing measures in place, it works with real-time data to share footfall and parking availability in the city centre.

The information is gathered by the University’s Urban Observatory from cameras that measure footfall levels on Northumberland Street, giving us an idea of how easy it is to social distance in the city’s busiest spots at any one time. So, how does it work and how easy it is to understand? It’s incredibly user-friendly, thanks to

You’ve tackled footfall, but what about getting in and out of the city? This handy new website is also set up to let us know how many cars are parked up in the city centre’s car parks. It’s never been easier to get ahead of the game and plan your commute into the city with ease. Make a note of where you need to be, pick the safest spots to explore and park up with minimal rush hour stress. Our Chief Executive, Adrian Waddell, said: “We've been living through some very uncertain times, none more so than our

city centre businesses. They need our support. “That is why collaborations between key city partners to develop innovative tools such as the How Busy is Toon website are so important. “All measures that help build customer confidence and encourage people to return safely to the city centre need to be prioritised.” Our city is all set for your arrival - it’s safe, it’s organised, and it can’t wait to welcome back its people! howbusyistoon.com

In the coming weeks, around 35,000 people will be issued a digital thermometer, a reusable and washable face covering, a refillable hand sanitiser bottle, and instructions on how to use them.
