EACH ISSUE WE WELCOME YOU TO THE MAGAZINE WITH AN INTRODUCTION FROM A MEMBER OF THE NE1 TEAM, GIVING YOU THEIR UNIQUE TAKE ON WHAT'S GOING ON.

FRESH FROM THE PRESS

Following an action-packed summer, it is my absolute pleasure to welcome you to the winter edition of the NE1 magazine. So, dust off your winter jackets, hats, gloves and scarves, it’s the season for getting cosy, sipping on mulled wine, and filling your spare time with experiences that make your heart melt. This edition is packed full of Santa’s grottos, Festive Menus, Winter warmers, Christmas Markets and of course Pantos. There’s so much to see and do in Newcastle this winter to sprinkle a little bit of fairy dust over your festive season. For me, Christmas starts with the Fenwick window, and I’m particularly looking forward to Northern Lights, the Christmas Markets, New Years Eve laser show and my family’s annual pilgrimage to the panto. It would also be remiss of me, not to take this opportunity to announce that the city’s businesses have voted, and NE1 has been elected for a further fiveyear term. So, we’ll be shouting about what makes Newcastle great and putting on events that add a little extra sparkle to the best city in the world for another five years. Thank you for reading, and I hope you have the most fantastic Christmas and New Year! STEPHEN PATTERSON CHIEF EXECUTIVE, NE1

CHARLOTTE ROBSON, OUR GOOD FRIEND AND CO-HOST OF THE TRUE FAITH PODCAST, HAS GIVEN US THE LATEST ON NUFC’S SEASON SO FAR… I try not to get too high in the hopes department with Newcastle United. Even though it’s all been going well, even though we’re class, years of misery have conditioned me to believe that the bubble will burst at some point. Or maybe I’ll wake up and Steve Bruce is still our manager and we’re languishing in League One and... Sorry, I had to pause there to be sick. As it stands I don’t have to vomit on the regular because Newcastle are absolutely class and this season so far has been a joy…ish. We started by smashing Aston Villa 5-1 then didn’t win for a bit, which was clearly a source of great arousal for the pundits who jumped at the chance to say that last season was a fluke and Newcastle can’t keep up with the demands of a Champions League run, a cup run, and the Prem. “Poor little guys. They can’t do it! They gave it a good shot but they can’t keep up.” Newcastle responded to this nonsense by going on a fully unbeaten streak across all competitions. Delicious! We beat Brentford 1-0 in a reasonably unfulfilling match, then held AC Milan to a 0-0 draw in the Champions League. That was another reasonably unfulfilling match but one that really saw the team dig deep and work hard to prove why we belong in this competition. We augmented that proof with a 4-1 thrashing of group favourites PSG at St James’ Park at the beginning of October. I have to use my limited remaining word count to write poetry about that night. To write songs and sonnets, because I have never been in a stadium that loud, or that up for it, or that magnificent. I have never gone out to my seat forty minutes early to find an almost full stadium already singing, already waving flags, already winning the game. It was something special and I’m so grateful to have been there - I can’t wait for the next one, and the next few seasons in the CL. Because we’re here to stay.
