SAM FENDER AT ST. JAMES' PARK

Wow, what a performance! Local lad Sam certainly did his hometown proud with a stunning two-night show at St. James' Park on Friday 9 and Saturday 10 June! That black and white striped guitar had over 100,000 people singing into the night sky across the two shows as Sam and his band blasted out their classics. Could anything make it better? Oh wait, just bring out Brian Johnson of AC/DC fame and team up for a rendition of Back in Black! What can we say, it'll take a last-minute winner to top the noise that shook us all night long at these shows! samfender.com

An amazing atmosphere across the whole city and so many lost voices. We love it when Magic rolls into its adopted home, what a weekend! rugby-league.com

NHS 75

5 July is an important day. It’s the 75th anniversary of the NHS and we encourage everyone to celebrate this significant milestone by lighting your building and businesses blue as well as getting crafty and creative with window dressings of the NHS's logo. After all, it’s the least we can do to show our support and appreciation for the NHS, who are treating a million people a day(!), helping people in need, one step at a time. Happy birthday NHS!

NEW GET INTO NEWCASTLE WEBSITE TO LAUNCH

Big news klaxon! NE1’s Get into Newcastle website (and close relation to this very magazine) is set to relaunch in July with a beautiful new facelift guaranteed to make it your one-stop shop for everything Newcastle-related! It’s your home for offers, events, and venue information for the city centre, as well as a raft of snazzy articles keeping you up to date with the city’s goings on, and it already gets tens of thousands of visitors each month. The new site promises to be slick and seamless, helping you make the most of our amazing city, whether you’re looking for a gig next week or a venue for your birthday soiree, so make sure you check it out!

Venues in NE1, if you’d like to be listed on the site, email info@newcastlene1ltd.com, it’s free for all!

HAWAIIAN HEAVEN: ISLAND POKE

Another box ticker for Newcastle's rich foodie scene. The team at Island Poke are bringing their A-game, providing poke bowls that are healthy, nutritious and, most importantly, delicious. Head over to Grainger Street and indulge in this fabulous Hawaiian treat. islandpoke.com

TEAS FOR DAYS: CLAREMONT TEAHOUSE

There’s always room for more when it comes to tea and whenever there's a new teahouse opening (or, to be more precise - reopening), no doubt about it, we welcome them with open arms. This one, however, has a few incredibly tempting unique selling points - over 60 different ranges of tea, a small secret cinema and an art exhibit! No matter how hard you try, one thing you will not find at Claremont Teahouse are teabags! You can count on them to serve loose and organic tea! Delicious! claremontteahouse.com

PILGRIM STREET UPDATE

It can’t have escaped your notice that Pilgrim Street is looking… well, different these days! With Bank House (all 14-storeys) complete and now open opposite Alvinos, work commencing on the new site for STACK in Worswick Chambers, and the building that will house HMRC coming out of the ground at a rate of knots at the top end, opposite the Tyneside Cinema, it’s safe to say that this part of the city is coming alive rapidly! What’s more, Hotel Gotham, a luxurious 5-star venue, is set to land right in the middle, bringing Pilgrim Street’s disused Fire Station back to life. What a fabulous time for the city centre!

GAUCHO

Have you heard? There’s a newcomer in Toon and it’s elegant, luxurious, welcoming, and stylish. You guessed it, it's Gaucho! This brand-new restaurant opened its doors on Market Street back in early March and it's official... we're obsessed! The menu is filled with goodies such as pea and mint ravioli, truffle mac and cheese and, of course, their speciality - sustainable steaks to which you can add different sides, sauces and toppings. How could you say no to that? Pop in on your day off, head in for a post-work tipple or book a table for the weekend and show some love to our new friend Gaucho! gauchorestaurants.com

CITY CENTRE TRANSFORMATION CONTINUES AT PACE

The once-in-a-generation investment in the heart of the city’s shopping streets has continued at pace in recent months as Newcastle Council’s City Centre Transformation Programme has moved onto Grey Street works as they finish up Ridley Place and Saville Row. The next few weeks and months will see striking changes to both streets with plush seating and greenery added, and Northumberland Street works will begin soon. It’s so exciting to see this area changing before our eyes as the £35m investment continues to push ahead! newcastle.gov.uk

NE1’s next chapter

IT’S AN EXCITING TIME IN NEWCASTLE NE1’S JOURNEY AS OUR THIRD TERM NEARS A CLOSE AND WE BALLOT THE CITY’S BUSINESSES IN AUTUMN FOR A FOURTH TERM. HERE’S WHAT IT’S ALL ABOUT AND WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW…

We want your views...

NE1 was established by the city’s business community back in 2009 to create the best possible trading environment for businesses.

Since then, NE1 has become a key player in the civic governance of the city, guiding and influencing the strategic direction of the city, as well as directly delivering projects that have had a significant impact on business, and the people of Newcastle.

Every five years NE1 ballots its 1,400 members, the businesses of Newcastle. Our next ballot will be held in September, and it is the businesses of the city that will collectively decide whether to continue supporting NE1, and if so, the priorities we should focus on.

Over the past few months, we have spoken to hundreds of the city’s businesses, combined with independent external business and consumer research to inform the themes of our consultation.

From these conversations, we are confident we have got it right, but what are your views?

Businesses, now is the time to ensure your voice is heard.

I do hope you will contribute and help shape NE1’s programme for the next five years. Let us know your thoughts and feedback by emailing Stephen.Patterson@NewcastleNE1Ltd.com

Who we are >>

For those who aren’t familiar with what NE1 does, let us shine a light!

NE1 is an independent, commercially run, not-for-profit company with a highly motivated, nimble and responsive Executive Team, who deliver all of our projects.

Now bear with us, here comes the way it works… Paid for by the businesses of NE1, every five years, these businesses get to decide if they would like to continue funding the work NE1 is implementing across the city, and the time to vote has come around once again. We’re delighted to say that NE1 has been renewed twice already with a ‘Yes’ vote of 87% in 2019 (the most ‘Yes’ votes any BID in the country had ever received at the time don’t you know!) and we sincerely hope for a similar (or better!) result this time around so we can continue to do great things in our great city.

Our approach is ambitious and relentless because over our past three terms, the city’s businesses have consistently reiterated their desire for Newcastle to be seen as one of Europe’s premier cities. As such, the projects NE1 champions and delivers focus on long-term strategic investment, and those vitally important, short-term initiatives that make Newcastle a vibrant, attractive and fun place to be.

The purpose of NE1 >>

Newcastle is already a fantastic city. It’s NE1’s (very fortunate) job to make it even better, one project at a time. We tend to be responsible for the things that make you smile when visiting Newcastle, creating those magical ooh and ahh moments all year round. Whether it’s Screen on the Green with films for the kids, our giant planters on the Quayside, or Restaurant Week making sure the foodies of the city are well fed and the restaurants packed out. As we all know, Newcastle is a great city with all of the components of a European regional capital. World-class architecture and cultural venues, an iconic waterfront, a top-tier football club, world-famous nightlife, exceptional educational institutions, a regionally dominant retail offer and an ever-growing professional services sector. The NE1 team is dedicated to ensuring Newcastle takes its rightful place nationally and internationally as one of the finest cities in which to live, work, and to visit.

What’s been happening >>

Let us guide you through what’s been going on behind the scenes…

WE'VE BEEN A STRONG VOICE FOR BUSINESSES

We help put businesses on the map and make sure their voices are heard. Creating a strong, effective voice for the city’s business community was one of the central pillars that NE1 was founded on in 2009.

Over the past five years, the most significant return for NE1’s lobbying has been the £37.5m funding secured to transform the city’s retail core. Work began in 2022, with Grey Street work beginning in early 2023.

The pandemic certainly threw a spanner in the works this term, but NE1’s lobbying efforts secured £470,000 in direct grants to help hospitality businesses adapt to outdoor dining, resulting in Newcastle now having more pavement cafés per capita than any other city outside London, and a gorgeous indoor / outdoor vibe across the city.

Beyond this, NE1 championed business interests on a number of high profile issues such as; Newcastle’s clean air zone charges, the proposed expansion of evening car parking charges, and supporting the expansion of the Combined Authority.

ATTRACTING AND PROMOTING WHAT NEWCASTLE HAS TO OFFER

Promoting what is unique about Newcastle, and attracting a wider audience, has always been and will continue to be one of NE1’s most important goals.

Even with two years of pandemic over the past five-year term, NE1’s events delivery has been significant. NE1 has played a critical role in securing and delivering major events such as the Heineken and Challenge Cup Finals, the Rugby League World Cup, three Super League Magic Weekend events, and UK Pride,

The future >>

You guys know us, we have big ideas and we want to bring them to life!

all in addition to NE1’s much-loved annual programme of events including Newcastle Restaurant Week, Screen on the Green, Summer in the City and an ever-improving Christmas experience with a three-day New Year’s laser show spectacular on the iconic Quayside.

Plus, we operate the iconic Newcastle NE1 social channels, including our famous Instagram and TikTok, showing off the businesses of the city every day to over 170,000 followers… admit it, you’ve sent one of our posts in the group chat before haven’t you!

MAKING NEWCASTLE A CLEANER AND SAFER CITY

NE1’s Street Rangers and Rapid Response Clean Team are quite literally the city’s heroes and here’s why…

6,000 black bin bags of rubbish removed per year

5,000 rapid response cleaning jobs completed per year in the city

850m graffiti removed per year

It is a hugely exciting time for Newcastle. There is a real sense of being on the cusp of something special coursing through the city. A once-in-a-generation transformation, the proof of which is witnessed in the city changing before our eyes. Long-term major developments NE1 has championed such as the retail core, the Helix, Pilgrim Street, the Stephenson Quarter and Gateshead Quays are beginning to materialise, bringing with them jobs and investment.

Over the next five years, we will continue to deliver and improve on NE1’s annual calendar of events, with a focus on families, the summer and winter seasons. We will work on creating a safer, cleaner and greener city centre. We will work with partners to pitch for, secure and deliver major events that raise the profile of the city. We will work on a Quayside masterplan; working with the council, businesses and residents to unlock its potential and ensure that the continued investment delivered works for businesses and the people of the city, and protects what is unique and special about the area.

£1.8m Newcastle Restaurant Week economic impact

31,000 attendees to NE1’s activities in Old Eldon Square during the summer holidays

970,000+

visits to the Get into Newcastle website in 2022

69 additional planters added to the Quayside

80% of retail thefts reported, now being recovered thanks to NE1’s Street Rangers

P.S. Did we mention, this magazine you’re currently holding is one of the incredible things NE1 produces to keep you in the know…

We have tons of exciting ideas in the pipeline. Scan the QR code for more information on NE1’s renewal, learn more about what we’ve been doing over the past five years and what our plans are for the next five…

Our favourite cuts for grilling

Beef: any steak from the rib or loin, rump steak, hanger steak, bavette, picanha

Pork: loin chops; baby back ribs

Lamb: chops, butterflied leg

Poultry: Chicken thighs or whole legs tend to produce a better result than the breast which can become a little dry

Buy the best you can afford 90% of good cooking is good shopping. Put trust in your butcher.

Temper your meat before cooking

Bring your meat to room temperature before cooking, you get a better result with dry-heat cooking. Doing this allows the meat to cook more evenly, instead of overcooking on the surface before the centre warms up. That said, take care not to leave your meat in the danger zone for more than two hours. Removing steaks, chops or other thin cuts from the fridge an hour before cooking is sufficient. For thick roasts or other large cuts, give them two hours at cool room temperature but no more.

Seasoning

Seasoning is important, but be careful! One of the properties of salt is to extract the juices from meat and in doing so prevents it from browning and forming a crust. It is therefore perhaps better to salt

smaller pieces of red meat half-way through the cooking process. When it comes to larger pieces, try seasoning with salt and freshly milled pepper where the meat is carved into slices after cooking for a second time. This is because the salt can never reach the heart of the meat during cooking.

Is it done yet?

For novice cooks, determining doneness is the step most fraught with anxiety. An overcooked roasted prime rib is a costly failure and even an overcooked burger can be an embarrassment. Fortunately, you don’t have to rely on guesswork. A good thermometer will guide you reliably on thick steaks and roasts, and you will learn to ‘read’ a pressure test for other cuts. Experience will give you confidence, just as it does professional chefs, who boast of the night when every single steak is cooked perfectly.

Carve like a pro

So you’ve bought a great piece of meat and cooked it perfectly. Now’s the time to carve. For maximum eating pleasure, keep these pointers in mind; let the meat rest, start with a sharp knife, carve against the grain, maintain your knife angle, cut tougher meats thinly and tender meats more thickly and finally, buy good steak knives.

Tuck in and enjoy!

WORKS ON PAPER AT HATTON GALLERY

1 July - 5 August

Art connoisseurs will know how precious and delicate paper sketches are. Well now, this is a precious opportunity to see some of them in person at Hatton Gallery. Think paper drawings, watercolours and prints by artists such as Samuel Palmer, Frank Auerbach, Laura Lancaster and more. Some of the pieces are from the 16th century and are only on display for a limited amount of time as paper art is light sensitive, but you already knew that, right? hattongallery.org.uk

October may be the month of scares, but it’s coming early here in Newcastle. tynetheatreandoperahouse.uk

WE CAUGHT UP WITH OUR FRIEND AND CO-HOST OF TRUE FAITH NUFC PODCAST, CHARLOTTE ROBSON. SHE'S GIVEN US THE LOWDOWN ON HER THOUGHTS ON NEWCASTLE'S TRIUMPHANT SEASON...

Nobody thought we’d manage it. Well, maybe they did, but not this soon. Newcastle United – and it brings me joy to type this so just indulge me – are in the Champions League next season. Utter madness. For reference, Newcastle United were last in the Champions League in the 02/03 season, where we played Barcelona, destroyed Bayer Leverkusen, and ultimately crashed out in the second stage. Many of our younger fanbase weren’t even born when we were hosting Barcelona at St James’ Park (a thought that sends a shudder down my ageing spine). This season has been a whirlwind. An exhausting, hilarious, fun whirlwind. We, as fans, have not been used to having much cause to celebrate but this season we have been treated to some of the best football I’ve ever seen both home and away. We’ve got a manager who really seems to get the region and the club, and ownership that make all the right noises about ambition. We made it to a cup final at Wembley (but ultimately the less said about the actual game the better), and we saw thousands of Geordies celebrating at Trafalgar Square. They even cleaned up after themselves before they went home. How lush is that?!

CHOP, DISSOLVE, BURN AT ALPHABETTI THEATRE

20 June - 8 July

Chop, Dissolve, Burn is a black comedy show that pokes fun at society’s attitudes towards disability, while at the same time exposing the truth about inequality. Great power is held by those who are able to make light of extremely important issues and the Alphabetti Theatre team can do that in ways that will take you on a rollercoaster of emotions. Prepare to go from laughter to tears within the span of an hour or two and lose yourself in the story of long lost love. alphabettitheatre.co.uk

Next season promises to be just as wild. We have another cup run to think about, European nights, and the league to concentrate on. There are plenty of critics and more cynical fans (who can blame the latter though after the 14 years of previous ownership?) who think we’ll struggle next season and I think that’s true; it won’t be as easy. We have more games to play at an incredibly elite level, and it will be harder. Bring it on. This season has shown we have a squad full of workers, and we’re looking to add to that in the transfer window. We’re gearing up for an interesting summer of rumours about who is linked but, based on the business we’ve done so far since the takeover, I am confident we’ll make some smart signings and continue to build on the incredible foundations that have been laid. We’re just getting started.

NE1 checks in with British dance music DJ, Judge Jules ahead of his upcoming LooseFest performance…

5minutes with Judge Jules

What are you most looking forward to about playing at LooseFest?

The crowd in the North East. As an artist it’s almost impossible to go wrong.

What can fans expect from your LooseFest set?

Lots of my own versions of tracks that I make especially for the summer festival season. No other DJ has them in their box.

What's your favourite thing about playing in Newcastle?

The people. Being from London, people from Newcastle are SO much friendlier. Do you have any plans while you're in the city?

I’m sad to say the football season won’t quite have started, but a visit to St. James' Park is sensational. It’s almost like watching football in South America, the atmosphere is THAT good. It’s usually always on my agenda when visiting Newcastle.

Favourite place to visit in Newcastle?

Digital – legendary.
