hello

First things first, from everyone here at Sunderland Vibe, we hope you and your loved ones are safe and well. Thank you for your patience and for returning to flick through the pages of our magazine. The world seems a totally different place since our last issue back in April. Many of us were planning holidays, shopping for our summer wardrobes and lacing up our dancing shoes for the Lamplight Festival. Plans were put on hold and we retired to our homes for a little while, but during all of this, we were overjoyed to see the Sunderland community spirt shining through. People helping people, businesses looking after businesses, Mackems supporting Mackems. We’re back with a bang this September with a brilliant bounceback magazine packed full of all your favourite Vibe people, places and cool happenings. From local heroes to exploring how our brightest talents have kept the music playing, our September edition is here with new goals, new faces and a new vibe. Stay safe, keep smiling and join us as we venture into the ‘new normal’ together!

Why a university degree is more important than ever “ W E SE C URED OU R D R E A M J OB S A N D N OW WE ’ R E H ELPIN G OT H E RS .” The value of a university qualification has never been more relevant as thousands of students prepare for life in the post-COVID world. Sunderland Vibe met with three graduates from the University of Sunderland who, each in their own way, have made a life-changing impact on their community after securing their dream jobs.

14

The Nurse: Stacy Humphrey It has been an interesting three months for Stacy, who graduated from the University’s Adult Nursing programme in April. Within days, the 22-year-old found herself on the NHS frontline at the height of the COVID-19 outbreak. Despite the scale of the challenge, Stacy,

from Fulwell in Sunderland, played her part in helping support the service during an unprecedented time in its history. As a fitting testament to her dedication, the trainee nurse went on to achieve a First-Class Honours degree and has now landed her dream job working as an A&E Nurse at South Tyneside District Hospital. Stacy, a former pupil of Monkwearmouth School, said: “I have loved my time at the University. The teaching and support has been fantastic, the facilities are outstanding, and I believe that it has been a great start to my nursing career.” The graduate also picked up this year’s Helen McArdle Nursing Prize after excelling in her studies and demonstrating a commitment to student affairs. Stacy was a School of Nursing and Health Sciences co-ordinator and students’ representative on the University’s Board of Governors. Stacy added: “I was surprised and overwhelmed when I received the email informing me of being the 2020 recipient of the Helen McArdle Nursing Prize, it’s fantastic news.”

Simone Bedford, Team Leader for PostGraduate Nursing, said: “Stacy is an inspiration and a positive role model to her peers. In my 24-year career in nursing and having worked in the NHS, RAF and four universities, I have never seen such a committed, caring and compassionate student.”

The Pharmacist: Emma Boxer

Emma Boxer landed her dream job as a hospital pharmacist earlier this year. The 23-year-old began her new career as a lead pharmacist at City Hospitals Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust outpatients’ department at a time when the pandemic was putting huge pressure on NHS services. Emma, however, was fully prepared for the challenge that faced her. She said:

“Pharmacists play an important role in making sure patients have all of their medication and don’t have to worry about obtaining supplies over the coming months. “I think the profession as a whole has done an amazing job in pulling together and providing patients with what they need.” Emma believes it was the opportunities and skills she developed during her year as an academic pre-registration pharmacist, spending her week split between a community pharmacy, Burdons in Whickham, Gateshead, and working as an academic tutor in the University of Sunderland’s Sciences Complex, that helped her land her job after graduating. She added: “The skills I developed during my pre-registration year at Sunderland ticked all the boxes when I applied for this job. “The role will involve lots of different elements, including being the point of contact for the pharmacy superintendent, delivering clinical services for outpatients and delivering staff training.” Andrew Sturrock, Principal Lecturer and Programme Leader of MPharm, said: “Emma has been a fantastic role model to all of the healthcare students at the University, and we are delighted that she landed the role at Sunderland Royal Hospital.”

spent the past few months supporting and educating children across the region. John Howe, Head Teacher at Seaburn Dene Primary School in Sunderland, did the University’s Graduate Teacher Programme, which preceded PGCE School Direct, 10 years ago. A mature student, John had worked in journalism before making the switch to teaching via the University. As soon as he graduated, he secured a job at a primary school in Ryhope before moving on to Seaburn Dene, where he became Head. Education courses at the University have been ranked second in the UK in the Guardian University League Tables 2020. John says the past few months have demonstrated just how important the profession is to our future generations. He said: “Community and family, at times like these, are more important than ever and at Seaburn Dene, this is very much at the heart of our efforts during these difficult times, to support our community and the families within.

“Teachers from all backgrounds are key workers in this effort and we are united in our profession.” Professor Lynne McKenna is Dean of the Faculty of Education and Society at the University. She said: “The teaching profession, as ever, has risen to the challenge, providing selfless public service in these extraordinary times. “However, it is not just qualified teachers and support staff who we are helping at this time. At the University of Sunderland, many of our trainee teachers have been assisting with these efforts, too.”

Familiar faces

After a thorough deep clean, Sunderland’s much-loved shopping centre is open for business! We caught up with some familiar faces that help to make the Bridges such an integral part of our city’s identity… safety in sunderland… - Please always sanitise and wash your hands. - Be kind to each other. - Work together to make our city centre a safe place to be.

of more help than she will ever know.

Three top tips for ensuring safety in sunderland… - Wear a mask to protect yourself and others. - Practice social distancing and regular hand washing and stick to the safety measures that are in place. - If we all do our bit, we can hopefully keep the virus down in our community, and therefore save lives.

Victoria Rennison I am… Victoria Rennison, Cleaning Senior Supervisor for OCS at the Bridges Shopping Centre.

During lockdown, I have learnt… That we take a lot of things for granted in life - for example: spending time with friends, family and work colleagues. In lockdown there was only myself and another three members of the housekeeping team working, so to go from having 20 team members to four was very surreal!

The positives I have taken from the pandemic include... A lot of people are kind, caring and willing to help each other in difficult circumstances. I also found the positives in spending more time with my family at home.

My Sunderland lockdown hero is… I don’t have one hero I have a team of heroes, and they are our housekeeping team that worked throughout the lockdown period. They all worked hard to keep the centre clean and sanitised for the safety of everyone who visited. My heroes include: Lesley Green, Harry Barker and Shannon Cuthbert. Huge thank you and well done team!

Three top tips for ensuring 18

Frank Johnson Bronia Brown I am… Bronia Brown, Customer Service Assistant at the Bridges Shopping Centre.

During lockdown, I have learnt… To appreciate the simple things in life. Food, reading books and nature. Life can change in an instant and that we as a human race are fragile. We are not invisible and we cannot fix everything. We must never take anything for granted because life is precious.

The positives I have taken from the pandemic include... I enjoyed walking by the river near my home, watching the wildlife and soaking up the sunshine and the endless blue skies. It was lovely to live life away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life without the usual pressures.

My Sunderland lockdown hero is… My sister, Sharon, who was always there to lend a hand. She would always drop us something off when she had been shopping - like chocolate or a loaf of bread and a carton of milk. She was

I am… Frank Johnson, OCS Security at the Bridges Shopping Centre.

During lockdown, I have learnt… To treasure time spent with loved ones. Once restrictions are fully-lifted, I plan on spending more quality time with my parents.

The positives I have taken from the pandemic include... Working through the lockdown and helping those unable or unwilling to get help. Everyone has an individual story both at work and home.

My Sunderland lockdown hero is… Everyone who has worked through the pandemic and continues to work through these strange times we find ourselves living in.

Three top tips for ensuring safety in sunderland… - Remember, people are only doing their jobs. - Respect individual’s needs, everyone is different and has a different story in life to get them to this point. - Keep smiling or you'll cry!

Giving back

Bridges businesses who pivoted to support others during the pandemic, or have been giving back to the community as we head back out to enjoy the city… Hotel Chocolat is offering 50% off for all NHS and Blue Light Card holders. As well as this, the team also donated tons of sweet treats to Sunderland Soup Kitchen during lockdown. Nice work guys!

Kimberly Topping I am… Kimberly Topping, Store Manager at Hotel Chocolat, Sunderland.

During lockdown, i have learnt… That I adore the outdoors and my garden so much, and that I can be super inventive when it comes to ways of seeing my family from the safety of my living room. Also given the chance, I will eat cookies for every meal.

The positives i have taken from the pandemic include... One of my biggest positives to come out of the pandemic is that I’ve found so many independent businesses to support, including my awesome local farm shop Hillheads. I have always baked, but this gave me an opportunity to do it every day. With a shortage of ingredients at the beginning, it gave me lots of time to experiment with what you can actually put into cookies! They make super lovely gifts for neighbours and friends - and always put smiles on faces!

Superdry kept the NHS well-stocked ands styled this summer - thanks to a massive donation of clothes worth £10,000!

Iceland helped keep the community going by dedicating time slots for our city’s elderly and more vulnerable folk. As well as dedicating shopping time for the city’s elderly and vulnerable, our chums at Tesco will also be donating a staggering £48m worth of food to charities in the coming weeks! Greggs has been high on our lockdown crave list! The pasty masters are offering free hot drinks to the incredible NHS staff and emergency workers across the city. Health gurus, Holland & Barrett have been donating dreamy diffusers and calming oils to NHS facilities around the city. Coffee aficionados, Starbucks, have been keeping our incredible key workers going by donating tons of coffee, sweet treats and smoothies. Our inspirational NHS workforce received 250,000 free coffees during the summer from our chums at Costa!

The brilliant Body Shop team delivered 25,000 bars of soap and 25,000 tubes of hand cream to frontline NHS workers at the newly opened Nightingale Hospital amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The fashionistas over at H&M are now gearing up to produce PPE that will be provided to hospitals and healthcare workers across the city. Sweet treats from TK Maxx’s stellar foodie department was donated to local food banks around the city during the pandemic. Krispy Kreme kept our key workers stocked up on sweet treats this summer; thanks to regular donut box donations!

My sunderland lockdown hero is… Shout out to Sunderland Community Soup Kitchen for supporting so many locals and ensuring they had meals. It’s been such a tricky time and they work so hard helping the community.

Three top tips for ensuring safety in sunderland… - Wash your hands. - Be spatially aware when you’re in public. - Wear a mask if you need to be in close proximity to others.

NHS workers enjoyed unlimited data during lockdown, all thanks to the generous folk at EE. Debenhams delivered the spirit of Easter with free eggs to NHS workers across the city. A little bunny tells us that they will be donating random items to key workers every week.

Lush made sure that NHS staff had the best skincare products sorted this summer - all thanks to their donation of 1,500 Helping Hands cream to Wearside facilities. 19

Liddle and many more - all class. I also watched a livestream DJ Set of Whitney Houston tunes too, that was probably the highlight of 2020 for me.

The show must go on…

As we eagerly await the return of the city’s music venues, we caught up with a few of the region’s rising stars to see how they’ve managed to keep the tunes coming and the music playing…

How important have sunderland’s music venues been for your journey? They have been essential - there wouldn't be any journey at all without them. Pop Recs were kind enough to give us our first ever gig in 2016 without even hearing a song, which we are incredibly grateful for to this day. Considering the lack of funding and everything they have to withstand at the minute, I think anyone still running a music venue in Sunderland deserves the world.

My most memorable gig in the city was… Definitely playing the Sunderland Empire with Dave Stewart. It was a surreal experience from start to finish and something that we'll never forget. Playing for royalty was pretty memorable too, but more the fact that it was such a strange scenario that will probably never happen again.

Shoutout to another artist making big noise in the city… Noyou are somehow slipping under the radar. Go listen to Noyou right now, they’re one of best indie pop-rock bands in the North East right now. Faye Fantarrow, Lottie Willis, Roxy Girls, Elizabeth Liddle, Silver Club and Post Rome are great too - they’re all totally different but equally as mint! Sunderland is producing some amazing young artists at the minute, the majority of which you can see regularly at Independent Sunderland for just £5 a ticket.

Eddie Scott, PICNIC Sunderland’s beloved sax-driven, funk-pop group share their lockdown experience…

How has growing up in the area influenced your music? I think the bands that were around just as we formed PICNIC may have influenced us - our aim was to be their polar opposite! I was a bit late to the Field Music party, but I am a huge fan now; I do think Sunderland has always birthed unique artists that have something to say. 20

Has lockdown helped your creativity? It's forced us to adapt, and creativity has definitely spawned from that. Personally, it’s also given me a nice spell of writing as I've had more time on my own.

Any favourite live stream performances? I've watched a few from Independent Sunderland and they've all been great! Mt. Misery, Faye Fantarrow, Elizabeth

Favourite sunderland venue… Support Pop Recs as much as you can. They’re the hub of the creative community in Sunderland and we need them to stay. It may not be a venue as such, but also make sure you support The Bunker; it's a Sunderland institution that I think people take for granted. FACEBOOK.COM/ PLASTICG LASS1

Plastic Glass

Rock n roll is alive and kicking with this Sunderland four-piece. Here’s what they had to say on Wearside’s rising music scene…

How has growing up in the area influenced your music? I think growing up with that working class background, you automatically connect with those bands that come across a bit rough around the edges. Obviously being from here, you have even more affection for influential indie bands such as The Futureheads and Maximo Park.

Has lockdown helped your creativity? I think one thing that lockdown has done is force us to be more creative in other areas such as social media - thinking of interesting content to help us stay active!

Any favourite live stream performances? They’ve really kept us going. There’s been a few on the Independent Sunderland Facebook page that have been really good. Mt. Misery and Elizabeth Liddle’s streams were both amazing.

How important have sunderland’s music venues

been for your journey?

making big noise in the city…

Crazy important - literally, couldn’t have done it without them! We’ve played shows at Independent Sunderland, Pop Recs and The Peacock. Our first show was at Pop Recs and our biggest headline show to date was at Independent Sunderland.

It’s got to be Noyou - the synth/indie/pop/ rock band that, despite being one of the best local bands around, are so unknown it’s crazy.

Shoutout to another artist

I mean there’s so much choice, but going for something brand new here with The Little Shop. From the team behind the likes of Independent Sunderland, Holmeside Coffee and Mexico 70, this new shop sells fresh coffee, quirky beer, homemade sourdough and donuts that are to die for. It’s certainly the best thing to come out of lockdown! FACEBOOK.COM/PLASTICGLASS1

My most memorable gig in the city was… Probably our biggest headline show, downstairs at Independent Sunderland. It was a Christmas gig, we had five other local acts on the bill for a full evening playing music to a jam-packed room!

Lockdown gave me the time to write new material that I’m really happy with! I’ve written some new tunes with a couple of friends over FaceTime!

Any favourite live stream performances?

Elizabeth Liddle We caught up with melodic songstress, Elizabeth Liddle, to chat about her musical journey to date…

Favourite sunderland venue…

Two of my favourite bands, Mamas Gun and Kodaline, did great live streams. I’ve also enjoyed a lot of local artists such as PICNIC, Noyou, Komparison, Lottie Willis and Adam from the Pale White.

How has growing up in the area influenced your music?

How important have sunderland’s music venues been for your journey?

A lot of great artists have come out of the region, which always gives you hope for your own career.

They have been so important for me, especially Independent Sunderland as i’ve performed there quite a few times.

I loved playing the Sound of Sunderland Festival last year!

Shoutout to another artist making big noise in the city… PICNIC and Post Rome have released singles this year, which I absolutely love! I supported PICNIC in March, which was my last gig before lockdown. I’ve also played on their cover album for the Sunderland Food Bank - performing a version of their new single for a great cause!

Favourite sunderland venue… The guys at Independent Sunderland are doing such an amazing job; their weekly live streams have really helped local artists continue to get their music out to a wide audience. FACEBOOK.COM/EELIZABETHMUSIC 21

It’s a safe crowd to be in!

Having launched way back in the colder months of January this year, Crowdfund Sunderland is returning this September for another dose of fund-raising as Sunderland shows its strength in numbers…

We caught up with Lisa to learn all about the latest fundraising programme from our friends at Sunderland City Council…

How did you hear about Crowdfund? We heard about Crowdfund through the council's ‘Let’s Talk Sunderland’ community engagement programme, which was supporting the development of the Neighbourhood Investment Plans.

Was the application process easy? The process is fairly straightforward, however you will need to know lots of background information on your organisation. Crowdfund Sunderland is a great platform and the staff are on hand to guide you through the process.

The first funding round has already seen an amazing response from the general public, especially amazing as many of the campaigns have taken place during the COVID-19 crisis. Current fundraising has meant that an outreach van to help support vulnerable people, a new community shop and community learning café, are just some of the 17 projects to receive funding through the Crowdfund Sunderland programme. There were also projects which directly supported families during the COVID-19 lockdown including the hugely successful council-led Food Bank campaign. Collectively, Crowdfund Sunderland has so far raised an incredible £141,185 from over 500 backers, with the main funders associated with the programme (Sunderland City Council and Sunderland CCG) pledging £89,450 between them to the various campaigns. Councillor Graeme Miller, leader of Sunderland City Council said he was thrilled with the amazing response to the first round of the Crowdfund Sunderland campaign. He said: “Crowdfund Sunderland represents a pioneering way for people to drive the change they want to see in their local area from the grass roots up. This is all the more important due to the COVID-19 crisis where we have seen communities pull together to support their neighbours. The council are

24

thrilled to support such an extraordinary range of local ideas that will strengthen local places and make Sunderland an even greater place to live and work." Lisa Wilson Riddell, youth worker at Washington Mind said: “We were delighted to receive such a generous pledge from the Crowdfund Sunderland funds towards our outreach van project. Their confidence and support in the project has helped galvanise our fundraising effort which has been backed by residents, community groups and businesses, and enabled us to hit our target.” Crowdfund Sunderland round two will launch on Thursday 17 September 2020. Pop the date in your diary and don't miss your chance to take part in this great local programme. Keep up to date at: sunderland.gov.uk/ crowdfund-sunderland

What was your project and how did Crowdfund Sunderland help? We know that not everyone can easily travel to our base at The Life House or to one of our outreach centres due to transport issues and the stigma often associated with mental health. We have long dreamed of having a community outreach van that will enable our teams to reach out to all who may need us in Sunderland, Washington and the Coalfield area. Crowdfund Sunderland has made this dream a reality for us.

What has been the most satisfying part of the crowdfunding process? The pledges from local people, Sunderland City Council and Sunderland Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) were so encouraging as they all acknowledged the need for the outreach service. Having shared our campaign far via Crowdfund, we received an anonymous donation of £10,000, which was absolutely incredible!

Anything else you would like to say about Crowdfund Sunderland? Thank you to everyone behind the scenes who has been involved in bringing this opportunity to Sunderland. Your support has been amazing!

While we’ve all been living through uncertain times, the team over at Gentoo have continued to work extremely hard to make sure its ambitious plans to put housing at the heart of the economic recovery in Sunderland post-lockdown, were submitted. Alongside major construction schemes that are currently ongoing to transform the city, the Group is working alongside Sunderland City Council to ensure housing and construction form the backbone of economic recovery in the area. With the local economy suffering from enforced business closures and other restrictions due to the coronavirus pandemic, we’re delighted to learn that Gentoo has submitted plans to build 268 new homes for affordable rent and shared ownership over the next two years at a range of developments across the city. 26

New sites include: • Central Downhill, Sunderland • Conishead Centre, Silksworth • Cragdale Gardens, Hetton-Le-Hole • Cricklewood Road, Hylton Castle • Eastbourne Square, Carley Hill • Land off Hylton Lane, Town End Farm • Prestbury Road, Pennywell • Land at Willows Close, Columbia

The exciting news? Gentoo’s plans for its hefty £45m investment in new housing feature alongside other exciting new developments such as Riverside Sunderland, the new City Hall and the Music Arts and Culture Quarter, as major partners in the city look to drive forward positive change for the people of Sunderland and be the catalysts for economic growth on Wearside. This is only the beginning of Gentoo’s wider 900 home £117 million investment in affordable housing around the city. The Group is aiming high with its latest proposals; the aim is to build new homes for rent and shared ownership, delivering new properties that are desirable for local residents and give Wearside tenants a chance to live in their dream home. From spacious outdoor gardens that are perfect for family get-togethers, to rooms with high ceilings and large open windows that aim to maximise natural light, Gentoo’s new house types are at the cutting edge of stylish modern living on Wearside. The developments will not also provide affordable housing in the city and stylish new homes for local residents, but Wearside will also enjoy a financial upturn too, as an estimated 693 temporary jobs will be made available in the city through

the construction work proposed by Gentoo and its supply chain. This is alongside a further 279 positions created on site and a further 441 roles supported in the wider local economy. The local economy will also benefit massively from Gentoo’s planned development too. As new residents move into to their sparkling new homes local businesses and inspiring independents across our city could enjoy an estimated £7 million per year of additional spend, with £1.5 million retained in Sunderland city centre alone. This is great news for a city centre that is on the up. You may have seen Sunderland City Council unveiling a series of stunning city centre plans in recent weeks, and Gentoo is working in collaboration with some our city’s major players to deliver on these world-class proposals. Gentoo’s proposals to build almost 270 new homes is an extremely positive step forward to changing untold lives across the region. The future is positive for the housing industry, and by continuing to work with city partners, Gentoo is here, every step of the way, as we walk into a brave new world post COVID-19 together.
