First things first, from everyone here at Sunderland Vibe, we hope you and your loved ones are safe and well. Thank you for your patience and for returning to flick through the pages of our magazine. The world seems a totally different place since our last issue back in April. Many of us were planning holidays, shopping for our summer wardrobes and lacing up our dancing shoes for the Lamplight Festival. Plans were put on hold and we retired to our homes for a little while, but during all of this, we were overjoyed to see the Sunderland community spirt shining through. People helping people, businesses looking after businesses, Mackems supporting Mackems. We’re back with a bang this September with a brilliant bounceback magazine packed full of all your favourite Vibe people, places and cool happenings. The Star Map sculpture at Roker seafront signals the start or end point in the Sea to Sea (C2C) route. The fine views across the River Wear continue as you enter the city centre and follow the water's edge to the route's official end at the Star Map sculpture along the seafront at Roker. Jill Scott Our very own Lioness, Jill Scott, launched an online fundraiser to help hospital staff working in the city during the pandemic. The England star recently donated her match shirts and raised a staggering £13,662 for the Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust. The Fans Museum Our friends over at the Fans Museum continue to educate and inspire! As the country plunged into crisis, the team assembled and took the opportunity to give something back to the community. They delivered hot food to primary school children and those fighting against social isolation, boosting morale amongst our city’s most vulnerable. With 5,000 meals delivered, over 13,000 miles clocked and a special appearance from Manchester United under-23s goalkeeper, Paul Woolston, we can’t help but stand and applaud some of our city’s finest lockdown heroes. Laura Surtees While we’d love to shout about every key worker, we’re giving special thanks to Laura Surtees for her outstanding achievement during the crisis. Laura, a healthcare worker at Sunderland Royal Hospital, was awarded the highly prestigious Cavell Star Award for her exceptional care towards patients, families and colleagues. Laura collected donations to help put together care packages for patients to help brighten up their time in hospital. Anne Ganley from Thompson Waste Centre has pledged to donate £10,000 to local charities hit by the coronavirus outbreak. While many of us have been cracking on with DIY around the house, Anne’s team have recycled a staggering 10,000 tonnes of waste during lockdown; repurposing everything from timber doors to glass window panes. As soon as Thompson’s hit the 10,000 ton mark, news broke about Anne’s incredible gesture - we’re so pleased to see people looking after people. Sunderland Vibe met with three graduates from the University of Sunderland who, each in their own way, have made a life-changing impact on their community after securing their dream jobs.

The Nurse: Stacy Humphrey It has been an interesting three months for Stacy, who graduated from the University’s Adult Nursing programme in April. Within days, the 22-year-old found herself on the NHS frontline at the height of the COVID-19 outbreak. Despite the scale of the challenge, Stacy,
from Fulwell in Sunderland, played her part in helping support the service during an unprecedented time in its history. As a fitting testament to her dedication, the trainee nurse went on to achieve a First-Class Honours degree and has now landed her dream job working as an A&E Nurse at South Tyneside District Hospital. Stacy, a former pupil of Monkwearmouth School, said: “I have loved my time at the University. The teaching and support has been fantastic, the facilities are outstanding, and I believe that it has been a great start to my nursing career.” The graduate also picked up this year’s Helen McArdle Nursing Prize after excelling in her studies and demonstrating a commitment to student affairs. Stacy was a School of Nursing and Health Sciences co-ordinator and students’ representative on the University’s Board of Governors. Stacy added: “I was surprised and overwhelmed when I received the email informing me of being the 2020 recipient of the Helen McArdle Nursing Prize, it’s fantastic news.”

The Pharmacist: Emma Boxer
Emma Boxer landed her dream job as a hospital pharmacist earlier this year. The 23-year-old began her new career as a lead pharmacist at City Hospitals Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust outpatients’ department at a time when the pandemic was putting huge pressure on NHS services. Emma, however, was fully prepared for the challenge that faced her. She said:
“Pharmacists play an important role in making sure patients have all of their medication and don’t have to worry about obtaining supplies over the coming months. “I think the profession as a whole has done an amazing job in pulling together and providing patients with what they need.” Emma believes it was the opportunities and skills she developed during her year as an academic pre-registration pharmacist, spending her week split between a community pharmacy, Burdons in Whickham, Gateshead, and working as an academic tutor in the University of Sunderland’s Sciences Complex, that helped her land her job after graduating. She added: “The skills I developed during my pre-registration year at Sunderland ticked all the boxes when I applied for this job. “The role will involve lots of different elements, including being the point of contact for the pharmacy superintendent, delivering clinical services for outpatients and delivering staff training.” Andrew Sturrock, Principal Lecturer and Programme Leader of MPharm, said: “Emma has been a fantastic role model to all of the healthcare students at the University, and we are delighted that she landed the role at Sunderland Royal Hospital.”

spent the past few months supporting and educating children across the region. John Howe, Head Teacher at Seaburn Dene Primary School in Sunderland, did the University’s Graduate Teacher Programme, which preceded PGCE School Direct, 10 years ago. A mature student, John had worked in journalism before making the switch to teaching via the University. As soon as he graduated, he secured a job at a primary school in Ryhope before moving on to Seaburn Dene, where he became Head. Education courses at the University have been ranked second in the UK in the Guardian University League Tables 2020. John says the past few months have demonstrated just how important the profession is to our future generations. He said: “Community and family, at times like these, are more important than ever and at Seaburn Dene, this is very much at the heart of our efforts during these difficult times, to support our community and the families within.

The positives I have taken from the pandemic include... A lot of people are kind, caring and willing to help each other in difficult circumstances. I also found the positives in spending more time with my family at home.
My Sunderland lockdown hero is… I don’t have one hero I have a team of heroes, and they are our housekeeping team that worked throughout the lockdown period. They all worked hard to keep the centre clean and sanitised for the safety of everyone who visited. My heroes include: Lesley Green, Harry Barker and Shannon Cuthbert. During lockdown, i have learnt… That I adore the outdoors and my garden so much, and that I can be super inventive when it comes to ways of seeing my family from the safety of my living room. Also given the chance, I will eat cookies for every meal.
The positives i have taken from the pandemic include... One of my biggest positives to come out of the pandemic is that I’ve found so many independent businesses to support, including my awesome local farm shop Hillheads. I have always baked, but this gave me an opportunity to do it every day. With a shortage of ingredients at the beginning, it gave me lots of time to experiment with what you can actually put into cookies! They make super lovely gifts for neighbours and friends - and always put smiles on faces!
Superdry kept the NHS well-stocked ands styled this summer - thanks to a massive donation of clothes worth £10,000!
Iceland helped keep the community going by dedicating time slots for our city’s elderly and more vulnerable folk. As well as dedicating shopping time for the city’s elderly and vulnerable, our chums at Tesco will also be donating a staggering £48m worth of food to charities in the coming weeks! Greggs has been high on our lockdown crave list! The pasty masters are offering free hot drinks to the incredible NHS staff and emergency workers across the city. Health gurus, Holland & Barrett have been donating dreamy diffusers and calming oils to NHS facilities around the city. Coffee aficionados, Starbucks, have been keeping our incredible key workers going by donating tons of coffee, sweet treats and smoothies. Our inspirational NHS workforce received 250,000 free coffees during the summer from our chums at Costa!
The brilliant Body Shop team delivered 25,000 bars of soap and 25,000 tubes of hand cream to frontline NHS workers at the newly opened Nightingale Hospital amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The fashionistas over at H&M are now gearing up to produce PPE that will be provided to hospitals and healthcare workers across the city. Sweet treats from TK Maxx’s stellar foodie department was donated to local food banks around the city during the pandemic. Krispy Kreme kept our key workers stocked up on sweet treats this summer; thanks to regular donut box donations!

As we eagerly await the return of the city’s music venues, we caught up with a few of the region’s rising stars to see how they’ve managed to keep the tunes coming and the music playing…
How important have sunderland’s music venues been for your journey? They have been essential - there wouldn't be any journey at all without them. Pop Recs were kind enough to give us our first ever gig in 2016 without even hearing a song, which we are incredibly grateful for to this day. Considering the lack of funding and everything they have to withstand at the minute, I think anyone still running a music venue in Sunderland deserves the world.
My most memorable gig in the city was… Definitely playing the Sunderland Empire with Dave Stewart. It was a surreal experience from start to finish and something that we'll never forget. Playing for royalty was pretty memorable too, but more the fact that it was such a strange scenario that will probably never happen again.
Shoutout to another artist making big noise in the city… Noyou are somehow slipping under the radar. Go listen to Noyou right now, they’re one of best indie pop-rock bands in the North East right now. Faye Fantarrow, Lottie Willis, Roxy Girls, Elizabeth Liddle, Silver Club and Post Rome are great too - they’re all totally different but equally as mint! Sunderland is producing some amazing young artists at the minute, the majority of which you can see regularly at Independent Sunderland for just £5 a ticket.

How has growing up in the area influenced your music? I think the bands that were around just as we formed PICNIC may have influenced us - our aim was to be their polar opposite! I was a bit late to the Field Music party, but I am a huge fan now; I do think Sunderland has always birthed unique artists that have something to say. 20
Has lockdown helped your creativity? It's forced us to adapt, and creativity has definitely spawned from that. Personally, it’s also given me a nice spell of writing as I've had more time on my own.

How has growing up in the area influenced your music? I think growing up with that working class background, you automatically connect with those bands that come across a bit rough around the edges. Obviously being from here, you have even more affection for influential indie bands such as The Futureheads and Maximo Park.
Has lockdown helped your creativity? I think one thing that lockdown has done is force us to be more creative in other areas such as social media - thinking of interesting content to help us stay active!
Any favourite live stream performances? They’ve really kept us going. There’s been a few on the Independent Sunderland Facebook page that have been really good. Mt. Misery and Elizabeth Liddle’s streams were both amazing.

Crazy important - literally, couldn’t have done it without them! We’ve played shows at Independent Sunderland, Pop Recs and The Peacock. Our first show was at Pop Recs and our biggest headline show to date was at Independent Sunderland.
It’s got to be Noyou - the synth/indie/pop/ rock band that, despite being one of the best local bands around, are so unknown it’s crazy.

I mean there’s so much choice, but going for something brand new here with The Little Shop. From the team behind the likes of Independent Sunderland, Holmeside Coffee and Mexico 70, this new shop sells fresh coffee, quirky beer, homemade sourdough and donuts that are to die for. A lot of great artists have come out of the region, which always gives you hope for your own career.
They have been so important for me, especially Independent Sunderland as i’ve performed there quite a few times.
I loved playing the Sound of Sunderland Festival last year!

I supported PICNIC in March, which was my last gig before lockdown. I’ve also played on their cover album for the Sunderland Food Bank - performing a version of their new single for a great cause!

No Strings Extended until March 2021
No Strings should have opened to the public back in March, but was unable to due to the COVID-19 closure of National Glass Centre. The exhibition moved online with a short video tour, but when the centre reopens, will be available to see in person for the first time! No Strings features the work of seven international artists working with glass beads in unconventional ways. The exhibition will include a beaded burger and coke by Faranak Sohi, an evening dress made using beads and safety pins by Shige Fujishiro and a beaded chicken showing his gymnastic prowess on the rings by Felieke van der Leest. Heritage at Heart is an online exhibition which examines the links between Sunderland’s industrial past and artworks from the Arts Council Collection. Presenting objects, documents and photographs from the Museum’s collection, alongside paired artworks from the Arts Council Collection, the exhibition also unearths Sunderland’s mining, shipbuilding, glass, pottery, automobile, rope and construction industries. It’s a safe crowd to be in!
Having launched way back in the colder months of January this year, Crowdfund Sunderland is returning this September for another dose of fund-raising as Sunderland shows its strength in numbers…
We caught up with Lisa to learn all about the latest fundraising programme from our friends at Sunderland City Council…
How did you hear about Crowdfund? We heard about Crowdfund through the council's ‘Let’s Talk Sunderland’ community engagement programme, which was supporting the development of the Neighbourhood Investment Plans.
Was the application process easy? The process is fairly straightforward, however you will need to know lots of background information on your organisation. Crowdfund Sunderland is a great platform and the staff are on hand to guide you through the process.
The first funding round has already seen an amazing response from the general public, especially amazing as many of the campaigns have taken place during the COVID-19 crisis. Current fundraising has meant that an outreach van to help support vulnerable people, a new community shop and community learning café, are just some of the 17 projects to receive funding through the Crowdfund Sunderland programme. There were also projects which directly supported families during the COVID-19 lockdown including the hugely successful council-led Food Bank campaign. Collectively, Crowdfund Sunderland has so far raised an incredible £141,185 from over 500 backers, with the main funders associated with the programme (Sunderland City Council and Sunderland CCG) pledging £89,450 between them to the various campaigns. Councillor Graeme Miller, leader of Sunderland City Council said he was thrilled with the amazing response to the first round of the Crowdfund Sunderland campaign. He said: “Crowdfund Sunderland represents a pioneering way for people to drive the change they want to see in their local area from the grass roots up. This is all the more important due to the COVID-19 crisis where we have seen communities pull together to support their neighbours. The council are

thrilled to support such an extraordinary range of local ideas that will strengthen local places and make Sunderland an even greater place to live and work." Lisa Wilson Riddell, youth worker at Washington Mind said: “We were delighted to receive such a generous pledge from the Crowdfund Sunderland funds towards our outreach van project. Their confidence and support in the project has helped galvanise our fundraising effort which has been backed by residents, community groups and businesses, and enabled us to hit our target.” Crowdfund Sunderland round two will launch on Thursday 17 September 2020. What was your project and how did Crowdfund Sunderland help? We know that not everyone can easily travel to our base at The Life House or to one of our outreach centres due to transport issues and the stigma often associated with mental health. We have long dreamed of having a community outreach van that will enable our teams to reach out to all who may need us in Sunderland, Washington and the Coalfield area. Crowdfund Sunderland has made this dream a reality for us.
What has been the most satisfying part of the crowdfunding process? The pledges from local people, Sunderland City Council and Sunderland Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) were so encouraging as they all acknowledged the need for the outreach service. Having shared our campaign far via Crowdfund, we received an anonymous donation of £10,000, which was absolutely incredible!

The exciting news? College also offers free online courses. Distance Learning courses are completed in learners’ own time so they don’t need to come into college. All study resources are sent via email along with deadline dates for completed workbooks and assignments. With courses ranging from mental health awareness, to setting up your own business and a range of free digital courses, there is an extensive choice to cater for every interest. Ellen Thinnisen, Chief Executive at Education Partnership North East, said: “We appreciate that many of our students lead very busy lives and are not always in the position to undertake a full-time course.
The next steps Sunderland College’s campuses are not just a place for school leavers... Through its range of higher education, access and free distance learning courses, the college also helps adults (19+) who want to gain a university-level qualification, start a new career or learn a new skill to achieve their goals. And, with both full and flexible part-time courses available, there are plenty of study options that fit around lifestyle and family or work commitments. The streets are alive with the sound of music! Sunderland will be welcoming its first ever Lamplight Festival to Mowbray Park next summer. This music extravaganza, which was pushed back to 2021 because of the coronavirus outbreak, will come back bigger and better - welcoming a range of world-class artists to the city centre. Organised by Sunderland City Council, Lamplight Festival will play host to UK indie-rock giants, Kaiser Chiefs on Saturday 7 August, with Sunderland’s very own Frankie & The Heartstrings confirmed as special guests. Glasgow rock icons, Deacon Blue will round off the festival with an unmissable headline set on Sunday 8 August. The fun doesn’t stop there… music-lovers can expect stunning sets from the likes of chief Idlewild songsmith, Roddy Womble!
