Our beautiful city has a certain charm about it as the autumn moves in. Leaves cover the ground, roaring waves crash into Roker Lighthouse and those fluorescent pink mornings make waking in the early hours so, so worth it. As always, a heartfelt thank you for spending some time flicking through our pages. Things may still be a little different just now. We once again have to rally together, show the solidarity Sunderland is famed for and look after one another as we move forward together. But fear not, as 2020 does its best to derail our plans, our special autumn edition is jam-packed with plenty of good stuff to light up autumn for you and your bubble. Saluting Derek Gamblin
If this unusual time has taught us anything, it’s that we have a city of inspiring local heroes! This page is dedicated to bigging up the people and places that make us incredibly proud to be Mackems! Paula Magdwick We really are blessed to have so many outstanding key workers in our region. We’re once again clapping our hands and shouting from the rooftops as another star from the South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust has just been recognised for her outstanding contribution during the pandemic. Paula Madgwick has been singled out by the National Institute for Health Research Clinical Research Network North East and North Cumbria’s (NIHR CRN NENC), claiming the Outstanding Research Contribution award for her efforts during the pandemic. Paula was brand new to her role reviewing research trials for the Trust when COVID-19 struck, and she found herself faced with having to quickly get to grips with helping to set up vital trials and help patients from across the North East. A highly prestigious award in the medical sector, Paula was commended for her exceptional efforts and skills that benefitted all of us and the local research community. Amazing work!

Time to hit the fairway with the Red Sky Foundation this October. The members of the foundation are inviting golfers to join them on their Inaugural Charity Golf Day, returning to the region on Friday 16 October. Teeing off from Ramside Hall, the Red Sky Foundation are set to host a thrilling day on the course, alongside drinks and dinner, as well as a stellar auction and unmissable live music from special guests.
With the football season already underway, we’re excited to announce that there’s been a major transfer signing of a different kind for the Red Sky Foundation. The foundation has recently announced that England and Manchester City playercoach, Jill Scott MBE, has taken on an ambassador role for this local charity. Filled with inspiring people, The Red Sky Foundation has not only raised thousands to support the incredible work going on over at the Children’s Heart Unit at the Freeman Hospital, but they’ve also helped to fund state-of-the-art machinery for Sunderland Royal Hospital and James Cook Hospital in Teesside in recent years. As a North East native from Sunderland, Jill is doing her bit by supporting campaigns and helping raise awareness for this outstanding charity. Having recently been awarded an MBE in the Queen’s honours list for her contribution to English football, this is a fantastic signing for the Red Sky team.

We’re shouting about a motivational Mackem this autumn. Derek Gamblin, an ex-SAS soldier from Sunderland, is hitting the saddle and riding his two wheel machine across two volcanoes for mental health charities in our region. In a bid to raise £2,000 for local charities, Derek Gamblin is undertaking the gruelling Two Volcano Sprint (2VS), a single-stage, unsupported bicycle challenge starting and finishing at iconic Southern Italian volcanoes - Mt. Vesuvio and Mt. Etna. What’s even more incredible, is that Derek is funding all travel and race expenses himself - all while completing the race unaided! Hopefully we can help Derek raise £2,000, which will provide people who are most in need with three months of one-on-one counselling sessions to support them with anxiety and depression. Great work Derek, you truly are a magical Mackem!
Brick for Brad’s Pad: Bradley Lowery Foundation The Bradley Lowery Foundation continues to touch hearts up and down the country, and we’re so pleased to share that they are inviting businesses both big and small for a chance to write their name into the foundation’s history and create lasting memories for families. A touching sentiment of support and solidarity for families to ejoy once they are able to finish the holiday home. Arts Centre Washington Exhibition: Looking Out, Looking In From September 2020 Created by artists Sally Southern and Nicola Lynch with the help of the local community. The artists connected ‘virtually’ with residents of Hetton, Easington Lane and Moorsley and asked them to reflect on their lockdown experience. Asking questions like, who have you looked out for? Who has looked out for you? How has the whole experience made you feel? The exhibition contains photography, text and installations.
No Strings Extended until March 2021 No Strings should have opened to the public back in March, but was unable to due to the COVID-19 closure of National Glass Centre. The exhibition moved online with a short video tour, but when the centre reopens, will be available to see in person for the first time! No Strings features the work of seven international artists working with glass beads in unconventional ways. The exhibition will include a beaded burger and coke by Faranak Sohi, an evening dress made using beads and safety pins by Shige Fujishiro and a beaded chicken showing his gymnastic prowess on the rings by Felieke van der Leest. Chad McCail: Toy Extended until 2021 This exhibition by Chad McCail has been extended to the new year, and we’re delighted to hear it! And this vision for the city centre is hurtling ahead, as a masterplan to reinvigorate Riverside Sunderland – the emerging heart of the city centre - has been shared by Sunderland City Council. The masterplan, which is backed by millions of pounds of public and private sector investment, will transform the former Vaux Brewery site and surrounding areas like Sheepfolds, Galley’s Gill, and High Street West. It will create the UK’s first carbonneutral urban quarter in a stunning location on the banks of the River Wear, with dramatic views across the city. Sunderland City Council’s bold and ambitious plans will move the city centre to a new level and strengthen connections to the rest of the city. A first wave of projects is already underway, including the new City Hall, and the 450-seat Auditorium, part of the Fire Station arts complex. Work will start soon on the 120-room Holiday Inn in Keel Square. The masterplan will build on these early wins, with headline proposals including: • 1,000 new homes to buy and rent in four sustainable city centre neighbourhoods • The creation of a new central business district, with 1 million square feet of modern office space, home to 10,000 jobs • The transformation of Galley’s Gill into a wonderful landscape park, and new green spaces in the heart of the city • New bridges across the river for walkers and cyclists • Plans to create the Culture House – a state of the art library and community hub that will attract 600,000 visitors a year. “Riverside Sunderland is a vision that will transform a part of the city that has vast potential. It’s a masterplan that will reinvigorate the city in a wider sense too – creating a place we can be proud to call the heart of Sunderland,” says Councillor Graeme Miller, leader of Sunderland City Council. “It’s a vision that we know is deliverable, and that will be truly game-changing for Sunderland. We’re aiming high because it’s what our residents deserve and it’s what the city needs – vision backed by a determination to deliver. “Riverside Sunderland is just the beginning. Sunderland is springing back to life. We’re seeing more and more investment flooding into it. The private sector is alive to the opportunities and that is bringing about transformation at a pace not seen for decades. “This will be a place where people want to live, work and play. Aspirational families will move here. Corporates will see this as a place they want to do business – and they will bring teams who will spend their money in our city centre and stimulate its economic growth by day and by night. Test your carbon monoxide and smoke alarms We rely so much on our boilers during the winter, which makes us vulnerable to carbon monoxide. This is extremely dangerous and can kill. You should test your carbon monoxide detectors at least once a month to make sure they are working. While you’re at it, there’s no harm in checking your smoke alarms too – it could save your life!
Know what to do in an emergency It is important to familiarise yourself with the location of your water stop-tap and electrical controls in case an emergency situation arises!

Dragon-backed parking app ready to kickstart Sunderland – are you IN? Innovative loyalty app ParkingPerx is coming to Sunderland in October and the deadline is fast approaching for businesses to join the scheme ahead of the launch. Over 50 independent businesses and national brands are already registered with ParkingPerx, including Harrison & Brown Furniture. Sunderland has been named University of the Year for Social Inclusion, according to The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2021. The prestigious honour recognises the University’s long-running success in attracting capable people into higher education, whatever their background or circumstances, and helping them to achieve their potential. This is the third year in a row the University has ranked in the top 20 of the publication’s unique social inclusion list – but the first time it has achieved

Last year, the University opened a new School of Medicine with the specific intention of attracting a more diverse intake into the medical profession. Sunderland is one of a handful of universities where more than 60% of the intake are the first in their family to go to university and more than 98% are educated in non-selective state schools. Sir David Bell, Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of the University, said: “Whether undertaking a foundation degree or studying in our medical school, students from all kinds of backgrounds have the opportunity to improve their career prospects and life chances when attending the University of Sunderland. “With a long tradition of being an open and accessible institution, we are absolutely delighted to have been recognised as University of the Year for Social Inclusion.” Alastair McCall, Editor of The Sunday Times Good University Guide, said: “Sunderland’s track record for widening participation to higher education is hard to match. “The new medical school is the cherry on the cake with its ambitious plan to make the intake to medical profession more closely resemble the diverse backgrounds of their patients. “Initiatives to engage schoolchildren who have the capability but not the motivation to aim for university are particularly bold. The sheer range of outreach and access work here makes an unanswerable case for making Sunderland our University of the Year for Social Inclusion.” Georgios Vasilakis, 19, originally from Greece, arrived in Sunderland last September to study Web and Mobile Development. He said: “Everyone at the University, and in the city, has been very welcoming. From the very first day I felt right at home. “The University has guided me in the right direction. Even though I came from another country and a totally different background, I never felt alone here, I always had someone to speak to. “Once I’ve finished my degree, I’d like to stay in Sunderland and do a Masters here.” Professor Tony Alabaster, Academic Dean for the University's Faculty of Health Sciences and Wellbeing, said: “We have always been proud of the diverse and rich

Kumbuka Collins Kumbuka was the University of Sunderland’s first black Student Union president from 1999-2000 - helping thousands of students feel comfortable and find their voice during university life. Originally from Zambia, Kumbuka settled in the region after graduating with a BA Business Administration degree, and now currently lives and works in the North East.

Introducing culture… As Sunderland’s port became increasingly busier during the late 20th century, more and more seafarers of Arabic, Middle Eastern and African heritage began docking at Sunderland. This photo is from around 1889, and although it’s an unassuming building, this small church on Kayll Road is perhaps one of the first places of worship, refuge and learning for those from Africa.
Emile Ford During the late 50s and 60s, Wearside welcomed chart-topping sensation, Emile Ford into the community after marrying a local lass from Hylton Castle. Emile was a popular culture figure during the early 1960s; as the leader of Emile Ford & the Checkmates, Emile would regularly visit the North East, touring and entertaining. He even visited Downhill and Pallion clubs in Sunderland! 22
Gary is a hero on Wearside. Having began his career with Manchester City, Gary joined the lads in 1984 and went on to make over 350 appearances for Sunderland - placing him fifth on the club's all-time appearance list. Having given 11 years of service to Wearside, Gary moved on to other local clubs in the North East before retiring. Nowadays, Gary is actively involved in better society. He’s a vocal member of the Show Racism the Red Card campaign, he is a regular and loved member of the commentating team for Sunderland AFC's live matches and he’s recently opened a football academy on Wearside for youngsters.
Emeli Sande Sunderland-born Emeli Sande is another inspirational figure who is impacting the city. The multi-platinum selling singersongwriter is the chancellor of the University of Sunderland and works closely with the Uni’s various departments to enact positive change for students and residents alike. Having been awarded an MBE in 2017, Emeli was thrust into the spotlight in 2012 when her debut album, Our Version of Events, spent 10 weeks at number one and broke a chart record set by The Beatles.
Donna Chambers Donna is another highly-intelligent intellectual that is changing the lives of students in the modern era. Having joined the University of Sunderland in 2013, Donna is now head of the renowned Faculty of Business, Law and Tourism Research Institute in the city and leads cutting-edge research into postcolonial and decolonial tourism.

Sunderland Shorts Film Festival We caught up with the brains behind Sunderland Shorts Film Festival to find out how they’ve kept the cameras rolling and how they're planning ahead for 2021... Sunderland Shorts is a film festival that shines a spotlight on emerging North East talent. What does the festival represent for the area? In the six years we've been running the festival, we’ve proudly showcased a range of established and up-andcoming filmmaking talent, while providing screening and networking opportunities to our participating filmmakers. How have you adapted during the pandemic? This year, due to the ongoing uncertainty brought on by COVID-19, unfortunately, we have decided to postpone our next proper
festival until 2021 and instead take a step back and celebrate some of our favourite previous entries across the history of the festival, from comedy and drama, to documentaries and student films. Tell us more about Sunderland’s film making scene? How can people get involved? We have been continually impressed by how much filmmaking talent there is within the city and how across the region there is such a passion to develop a thriving
filmmaking scene. Submissions are still open for Sunderland Shorts Film Festival 2021. Writing Sunderland sagas… How has growing up in the area influenced your writing? All of my books centre around really strong women, which is definitely influenced by the women I grew up with and saw around me in Ryhope. There’s a great deal of poverty in my books as they’re set in 1919 but also a lot of love and a sense of the pit village community coming together to help the heroine overcome everything I put her through. Ryhope Library has long gone now, but I used to visit it every Saturday morning when I was growing up. My grandad Eddie was an avid reader of cowboy and western books and I’d go to the library for him once a week to change his books. I started to take books out for myself and fell in love with Enid Blyton’s Secret Seven books and Nancy Drew mysteries then progressed to reading more grown-up books such as those by Agatha Christie. Ryhope Library was hugely important to me and instilled a love of books that lasts till this day. I was hugely honoured and proud to be asked to officially open the renovated school library at my old school, Ryhope Juniors, after my debut novel set in Ryhope - Belle of the Back Streets - was published. The headmistress had a ribbon for me to cut and I talked to all of the schoolchildren about following their dreams, whether it was to be a writer or a dancer, or whatever they wanted to be. As part of Heritage Open Days last year, I lead a guided walk around Ryhope showing the locations in my books and it was one of the best days ever! I was hugely proud to share the history of Ryhope with the large group who turned up on the walk, some from as far away as down south.
We caught up with award-winning author, Glenda Young, to discuss her latest novel, how the ancient village of Ryhope shaped her writing life and what’s next… got my chapters roughly planned do I begin to start putting on the gloss and writing the first draft.
A word of advice for budding creatives in the area… Get involved and get connected! Find others who enjoy the same things as you do. Organisations such as Sunderland Culture and The North East Business and Innovation Centre (BIC) have been hugely supportive to me and I’m indebted to them for their help.
When you're not writing, where will we find you in the city? Antiquarian Society, Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens and Durham County Records office, but because of lockdown, I had to research in a very different way this time. I ordered a lot of old books online and used online resources.
Are there any other areas in the city that inspire you creatively? I’m inspired everywhere I go in the city! As a writer, you need to be curious and I’m always wondering around old buildings, intrigued to know what they used to be and who lived or worked inside. I’m always thinking of questions like: ‘Would my heroine have walked along this city street?' and ‘What would she have seen one hundred years ago?’
Has lockdown helped your creativity?
What can you tell us about the process of beginning a novel?
I’ve enjoyed the peace and quiet that has given me more time to write and concentrate wholly on my work. However, trying to research Sunderland’s history during lockdown hasn’t been without its challenges! Normally I’d be researching in Sunderland local history library, Sunderland
I think of writing a novel like decorating a house! I start by sanding down the woodwork – that’s when I do thinking and planning, jotting down notes and ideas. Then there’s the undercoat to apply – that’s the research. Only when all the research has been done and when I’ve

I love cycling along the seafront and the river. My favourite shop in the city is Waterstone’s and the staff who work there are very supportive of local writers. When my second novel The Tuppenny Child was released, it came out at the same time as Margaret Atwood’s The Testaments. Margaret Atwood is my writing heroine, my favourite author and Waterstone’s Sunderland had my book next to Margaret Atwood’s in their shop window display. It’s fair to say I was somewhat overcome with emotion when I saw this! So, if you were in the Bridges and saw a lass from Ryhope crying her eyes out outside of Waterstone’s, that was me!

Joanne Martin, Leadership and Management lecturer, said: "Our part-time HN Business courses are ideal for those who would like to get university-level qualification but feel they don't have the time to do it. "The benefit of a blended learning approach is that students take ownership of their own learning; they can decide when they are going to go online and
access the materials any time they want. "It helps learners build confidence because they are reading through the materials in their own time and we can build on any areas in class time if we need to." On successful completion of the courses, students will be able progress onto a business top-up degree at university, or increase their opportunities to work in areas such as management, administration, human resources, marketing, accounting and law. Lights Out: Sunderland’s Halloween happenings are back… There’s something wicked heading to Wearside this October. Halloween is back! Here’s the lowdown on some of the spooky stuff descending on the city this season... Our friends at the BID are bringing a whole new world to Sunderland city centre this season. They’re working alongside creative experts, Designs in Air and Peel Interactive, to bring Mackems an immersive Augmented Reality (AR) monster trail. Last year's trail was a huge success, and we can't wait to see some more spooky stuff! In 2019, we welcomed Mackie’s Monster to the city and it’s fair to say that this devilish creature was the talk of the town. So for this year, our BID buddies are returning with a huge monster trail that will make up part of the city’s Lights Out Halloween programme and wider activities. As the dark nights roll in and the city lights shine bright, families from across the region are invited to embark on a terrifying tour of ghoulish installations dotted around city centre buildings, with the exciting addition of AR technology. A clever idea for the city given current restrictions, this trail will be perfect for families enjoying the thrill of Halloween all while keeping safe in accordance with Government guidelines. Designers have been hard at work, creating a series of immersive, themed 26
characters that will perfectly compliment the physical installations dotted across the city. So, wrap up warm, grab a hot drink and uncover these terrifying creatures using your mobile device (Pokémon GO-style) and watch on as they dance across some of Sunderland’s most iconic buildings.
It’s a devilishly good idea… This exciting project will be fully accessible across the city centre, giving people of all ages, abilities and interests the chance to get involved and celebrate Halloween away from the home. The aim of the game? Visitors will head out into the city to capture both the physical and AR monsters, noticing a few spooky twist and turns as they go! It’s a fantastic and incredibly engaging way get out and about with the family this autumn! By introducing cutting edge, digital technology to accompany the physical aspects of the Lights Out trail, Sunderland continues to demonstrate itself as a city that’s constantly growing from strength to strength. For obvious reasons, we can't hold the community parade. But Sunderland BID’s 'Virtual Parade' group will be the place to share weird and wonderful spooky ideas so you can all enjoy Halloween at a distance or home. Mackem Monster Hunt 23 October - 1 November The Mackem Monsters are back, and this time they’re bringing with them some devilishly good treats. From Friday 23 October until Sunday 1 November, take to the streets and find your favourite creatures hidden on landmark buildings as thirteen different creatures parade round some of Sunderland’s most iconic buildings. The idea is simple. Alongside a delightful inflatable trail, monster hunters can also get virtual thrills with an Augmented Reality Monster. Making Halloween this year a safe, comfortable and an outdoor community trail for all members of the family. All you have to do is downloaded a bespoke app on to any smartphone and follow the guide to the various locations across Sunderland City centre. The Mackem Monster trail and Sunderland Experience app will be available from Friday 23 October, be sure to download it from the Android and Apple store!
Spooky stories You’ve seen all the amazing events that the team at Sunderland BID have put on for the city, now they’re asking YOU to get involved with Sunderland's Spooky Story competition! As it is the season for stories that go bump in the night, our BID buddies are looking for writers to send in 500 words of mischief, mishaps and mayhem that will be judged by an expert panel of writers This year, the team have bagged themselves an iconic name in the horror genre to coincide with the Sunderland's Spooky Story competition. David Turton, a local author best known for sis post-apocalyptic horror novel, The Malaise, has written a nefarious novel to celebrate the Lights Out festivities titled The Monsters and the Mackems. When the boat comes in… Recognise where this is the city? Yep, you guessed it. This is an incredible image of Hendon Fish Quay from 1931. Appearance and technology may have dramatically changed in 89 years, but Hendon Fish Quay - as it is today - was a buzzy hub of fishy activity. Originating some time in the mid-1800s, the fish and chip dish began to grow exponentially as the growing, working class people of Britain’s industrial population searched for a cheap, delicious meal that could be eaten within dinner break and with minimum fuss. You could
say that Sunderland’s industrial and maritime prowess was partly fuelled by fish and chips! With Sunderland at the forefront of maritime technology, steam trawlers and fishing boats allowed for fast distribution of fish around the city. Everyday, hardened fisherman would brave the North Sea, battling waves upwards of 20ft to bring in a fresh batch of cod and haddock for hungry mouths at Hendon Fish Quay. Fish and chips were that popular that the Territorial Army even prepared for battle by serving the dish in special catering tents
at training camps in the 1930s. Nowadays, we venture downstream to The Fish Quay Shop. A local business with a wealth of experience. Check them out next time you're down the coast. Do you reckon fish and chips from the 30s would taste as good as our Wearside chip shops now?
