For something to do, I love visiting‌ “Penshaw Monument has a special place in my heart. Growing up so close to Penshaw, I’ve always enjoyed exploring the monument. You can usually find me at the Bridges every weekend hunting for the latest trends and best deals. I’ve really enjoyed browsing their autumn/winter range this year. It’s incredible!â€? Observe, Experiment, Archive 15 NOVEMBER - 5 JANUARY 2020

Head over to Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens for a fascinating exhibition exploring the relationship between photography, science, technology and health! From fertility treatment, oceanic plastic pollution and star gazing, Observe, Experiment, Archive reflects on the work of eight contemporary artists and explores how their art has been affected by historical happenings, scientific innovations and a rapidly changing world. What’s more? The exhibition includes a number of Sunderland graduates too! Be sure to check out Liza Dracup, Helen McGhie and Sophie Ingleby’s stunning displays. Liza takes inspiration from the historical ideas of Sunderland-born inventor, Joseph Swan, to illuminate the natural world with artificial light. Helen investigates the experience of stargazing for northern astronomers at Kielder Observatory - a stunning location in Northumberland and the world’s third largest dark sky reserve. Sophie Ingleby’s project, SEED, offers a fascinating insight into the experience of those undergoing fertility treatment through a series of portraits and clinical imagery. Created at Newcastle Fertility Centre at Life Science Centre, Sophie depicts a range of key moments in the process and helps raise awareness and understanding of IVF.

Marjolaine Ryley

15 NOVEMBER - 3 FEBRUARY 2020 Photography fanatics are in for a treat with this one. Marvel at Marjolaine Ryley’s stunning solo exhibition over at the Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art! ‘This Is What I See’ showcases twenty years of work as Marjolaine displays her poetic recollections of memory. Using photography archives as well as newly-discovered objects, Marjolaine explores the notion of self-image and how we imagine ourselves through the images and memories we make over our lifetime. A senior lecturer in photography at the University of Sunderland, Ryley’s photography invites us to explore ideas of personal memory, social history, familial relationships and the pivotal role imagery plays in our lives. Trust us, you don’t want to miss this one!

Remembering the First World War in Sunderland We’re remembering the 101 year anniversary of the First World War in Sunderland with a historical guide around Wearside. We've picked out a handful of places that played a pivotal role in shaping WW1.

Acoustic Mirror

RAF Usworth

Sunderland Echo Printing Office Victoria Hall and Temperance Institute Bede Tower

Sunderland Echo Printing Office Bridge Street, Sunderland SR1 1TQ

Acoustic Mirror Broomshields Close, Sunderland SR5 1SJ

On the 4 August 1914, residents rushed to the streets around the Sunderland Echo’s printing office with people eager to hear the latest news from Westminster. As the clock struck midnight, news filtered through that Britain had declared war on Germany.

Built to help coastal defences detect approaching enemy attacks, a 15-foot concave concrete dish was constructed at Namey Hill in Fulwell. Built in 1917, the Acoustic Mirror had a sensitive microphone located in the centre to help identify enemy forces.

RAF Usworth

Bede Tower Burdon Rd, Sunderland SR2 7DZ

In response to the deadly Zeppelin attack on 1 April 1916 in Sunderland, the Royal Flying Corps requisitioned fields belonging to South Moor farms and developed Hylton Aerodrome. Although the name was later changed to RAF Usworth, the main task was to patrol the North East coast for enemy activity. The former airfield site has now been redeveloped as a manufacturing facility for Nissan.

Victoria Hall and Temperance Institute Burdon Road, Sunderland SR1 1PP Victoria Hall and Temperance Institute was a beautiful, gothic-style building erected in 1870 and nestled in the grounds of Mowbray Park. Recruitment rallies were regularly held at Victoria Hall as the government urged local men to sign up for wartime duty. A staggering 8.7 million men served in the British Army during WW1, with over 25,000 thousand men hailing from Sunderland alone. This amazing building may have been tragically lost during a German bomber raid in 1941, but you can still immerse yourself in WW1 history at Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens. SUNDERLANDCULTURE.ORG.UK/SUNDERLAND-MUSEUMWINTER-GARDENS

Built in 1851 by Mayor of Sunderland Anthony John Moore, Bede Tower played a pivotal role during WW1 for the allied forces. The building was used as a regimental hospital for military casualties wounded in action and also acted as a voluntary aid depot for soldiers - supplying servicemen with clothing, sanitaries and gifts throughout their recovery. Bede Tower has since been fully refurbished and visitors can now partake in medical workshops and learn about first aid. BEDETOWER.COM

Sunderland War Memorial Burdon Rd, Sunderland SR1 1QB Standing tall in the grounds of Mowbray Park, the Sunderland War Memorial is the focal point for the Remembrance Sunday celebration in Sunderland. Unveiled by Colonel Ernest Vaux on 26 December 1922, the column is made from marbled granite and weighs a monstrous 85 tons! Initially dedicated to those who fell during WW1, the memorial has become a icon for remembering those who have lost their lives during conflict. 11

In 2013, Frankie & The Heartstrings opened Pop Recs. A small, independent record store that was based in the abandoned tourist office on Fawcett Street. Originally planned as a temporary advertising tool for their forthcoming album release, the band were blown away by the store’s reception from the community. Guests could wander over to the store and expect band members from their favourite band behind the counter, busy grinding coffee beans for waiting customers. Music followers were invited to browse through a limited selection of second-hand vinyl records and Frankie & The Heartstrings fans could peruse through a small-batch of band merchandise.

In the midst of it all… From unlikely underdogs to the driving force behind Sunderland’s growing culture scene, Pop Recs has become a beacon of light for creatives around the region. A renowned Wearside institute situated in the heart of the city, we met with Frankie Francis, Amazing Radio drive-time presenter and lead singer of Frankie & The Heartstrings to discuss this fabulous cultural hub. “A RT I S WO ND ERFUL , AND MUSIC CAN UNITE SO MANY PEOPLE. YOU CAN F IND COM M ON GR OUND IN A PL AC E LIKE POP RECS.” 18

Stock was limited but the demand and passion was there from the start. Frankie & The Heartstrings had just released Hunger and were featuring heavily at festivals around the UK - and everyone wanted a piece of the action. The residency on Fawcett Street was extended and more visitors continued to arrive to check out this vibrant new store. Pop Recs began inviting the community to get involved with regular mid-week classes that ranged from photograph classes and yoga lessons. They also took their live music offerings to the next level too. In 2015, Pop Recs announced that Brit Awardwinner James Bay would be playing live in-store, a seminal moment for the team at Pop Recs. Frankie explains that places like Pop Records are vital to the local music and culture scene. “Independent venue week is a very important thing to highlight. These are the kind of venues that are the lifeblood of the live music scene.” Six years later, Pop Recs have moved from their temporary premise into a brand new building and are the driving force behind Sunderland’s emerging culture scene. Standing tall on Stockton Road and just a stone’s throw away from Park Lane Interchange, Pop Recs now have a bigger,

@SunderlandVibe

more cohesive creative space that still manages to retain the essence of their previous residency on Fawcett Street. There’s a larger coffee offering, a communal seating area that’s ideal for watching the world go by, more musical records to scour through and they now have a performing space dedicated to punk icon Frank Turner. Not only has live music events improved, their outreach into the community soared too. Frankie describes the importance of Pop Recs social outreach: “You have to involve as many different sectors of the community that you can. Giving a demographic an opportunity, an area or just a space, a table with chairs, a practice room or venue to try something. It’s that an initial step.”

9 to 5 The Musical 5 - 9 November

Pulse 14 November

Venture over to Arts Centre Washington as Bamboozle Theatre arrives with their brand new stage production, Pulse! A captivating children’s story that follows Patience, Bird and Clanky Jane in the American Desert, join the gang as they try everything to make it rain! Featuring relaxed performances suitable for all including those on the autistic spectrum and performances aimed at audiences with multiple learning disabilities.

Sporadic mid-week events turned into reoccurring happenings that regularly sold out well in advance and this has continued into the current day. Visitors can get involved with an array of interactive classes. Budding artists can learn the secrets behind printmaking and show their talents with a wide variety of photography workshops. There’s also an abundance of activities for kids to enjoy too! From fantasy world art days to Pop Recs’ incredibly popular Saturday art classes, there’s something for the whole family to get involved with. With local artwork lining the walls, rare vinyl albums from the region’s finest musical talent available and a fine cup of coffee waiting to be sipped on, make sure you visit this November and immerse yourself in the wonderful events at Pop Recs.
