Getting to know Frankie Francis, lead singer of Frankie & The Heartstrings It's that time of year when all the Christmas partying is over, money is tight and everyone's a bit down thanks to the cold, dark mornings. But spring is around the corner and this always fills me with optimism as I start to work with a variety of people across the city, making plans for the summer and beyond. Live music, events and creating music myself are at the top of my to-do list right now and I can't wait to sink my teeth into all of it, right here in Sunderland!

The newly-restored Hylton Castle
Mighty makeover Following a £4.2m restoration and support from Sunderland City Council, National Lottery Heritage Fund, Castle in the Community group and English Heritage, Hylton Castle has been lovingly transformed into a beautiful heritage and community venue, which will be run by Hylton Castle Trust on behalf of the community.
Set over three floors, Hylton Castle will be home to a multitude of learning, event and exhibition spaces, as well as a café. The Trust will also deliver community-based learning and engagement programmes. Working alongside local schools and various parts of the voluntary and community sector, Hylton Castle will be 10
at the heart of the Wearside community and offer invaluable opportunities for training and volunteering too! Of course, everyone is welcome to come along and visit the castle without taking part in any of the many events or activities. Work to transform Hylton Castle into a heritage and community venue for all to
enjoy began in 2016, with construction work beginning in autumn 2017. The state-of-the-art revitalisation of this 14th century medieval castle has provided several construction training opportunities for local young people. Sunderland’s young people worked alongside skilled crafts people to gain valuable insight into a range of traditional skills, such as stone and wood working. These opportunities have successfully provided pathways into apprenticeships and employment for several of these young people. Local volunteers have also been playing their part in helping to bring the site back to life. They have been turning their hands to everything from photography, litterpicking and guided tours of the building, as well as providing interpretation content. This content will allow visitors to fully immerse themselves in the castle’s history and heritage. The recently-revealed architecture and corbels will tell previously untold stories of the castle’s fascinating past and the unique roof viewing platform will offer stunning views of present-day Sunderland. With funding of £2.9m provided by National Lottery Heritage Fund, along with financial contributions from Sunderland City Council, Garfield Weston and The Wolfson Foundation, the castle has been restored sympathetically, making sure the original architecture and surrounding

Councillor John Kelly, Cabinet Member for Communities and Culture at Sunderland City Council, said: "This is a really exciting time; the castle is such a fantastic asset for the city and we’ve had a huge amount of interest in its transformation." "This project isn’t just about celebrating the history of the castle and the grounds, it’s about celebrating the different roles the building has played in the heart of

the community and in the lives of the generations of people connected with it." "The fact that this has been very much a community project, led by local people for over 25 years, is what makes it so special. In the last year alone, we’ve had more than 120 people volunteering their time, skills and expertise in a range of roles from raising awareness of the castle’s history and leading workshops with local school children, to carrying out environmental work in Hylton Dene and hosting a huge battle re-enactment in the castle grounds." Susan Ord, Chair of Hylton Castle Trust, said: "The Trustees are looking forward to working with our partners to create a new chapter in the history of the castle, putting it once more at the heart of the community, engaging and inspiring the next generation to protect this key part of Sunderland’s heritage". Hylton Castle Trust will be partnered in the management and operation of the castle by Sunderland North Community Business Centre, which already manages Fulwell Mill and Bowes Railway. After years working in a number of 9am5pm roles, he yearned for a change and decided to take the brave step of setting up his own business, with the goal of fusing his love for the North East with his long-held passion for producing and sampling niche local drinks. "Wherever you go, there always seems to be a regional drink or spirit that represents that area and it’s nice to be able to experience the local delicacies whenever you visit somewhere new, it was what I loved most about being in different countries," explained Scott. "I wanted to create something that bottles up and gives people a real flavour of the North East, something that is reminiscent and evocative. That’s what inspired me to launch WL Distillery. "The first flavour we’re going to produce is inspired by the Great British garden," Scott added. "My grandfather has grown his own fruit and veg in his garden for years and there are three generations of my family who’ve all grown up in his company, first my Mam, then me, and now my daughter, and I wanted to capture this whole family tradition in our first product." Scott attended a series of workshops at the BIC as well as meetings with his business adviser. He added: "Ron has been great. He really knows his stuff. He has set up a fair few businesses in his time so it’s nice to have someone experienced to bounce ideas off. When you’re setting up, you have all these grand ideas, but when it comes down to the practicality, it’s great to have someone to turn to, especially with the financial planning side of things." Finding your dream home… Getting a foot on the property ladder may not be the first thing on the mind of young people graduating from university or starting out in their professional career in Sunderland.
Certainly, looking for a home to rent might not necessarily be the first thought that springs to mind. But for a young professional here in Sunderland, getting that first foot on the property ladder doesn’t have to be the distant dream many may think it is. It definitely wasn’t for Jonny, a marketing 18
and communications professional from Washington, who made the leap onto the ladder and moved into his own rented home through local housing provider, Gentoo. We caught up with Jonny at his home in Washington, to hear at first-hand how and why he was able secure his first property,
despite fears of affordability and lack of suitable, available accommodation in Sunderland. After graduating from university in Leeds, Jonny returned to his hometown to start his career and be with family and friends, moving back into his childhood home with his parents. After living with them for a number of years, he, like many young professionals, started to build a life that warranted him living independently in a place he could call his own. “Don’t get me wrong, moving back home with my parents definitely had its perks, but as I got older and my career and my
@SunderlandVibe
life both started to develop, I realised that I needed to explore my options to find my own place. I hadn’t lost hope of owning my own home one day, it’s just something that I didn’t think was affordable in the short term. So I decided to explore my options with Gentoo, as I knew they provided the majority of affordable housing in the city.” As a regulated provider of good quality, affordable housing in Sunderland, renting with Gentoo was Jonny’s preferred route to finding a suitable property. “It was a no brainer in a lot of respects. Gentoo don’t require you to make a deposit or put down a bond on a property, as well as you having the option of choosing whether a property comes furnished or unfurnished. Which, for someone in my position, who is looking for their first home, the opportunity to move into a property that came furnished with things I just didn’t have immediately available to me, was ideal.” Since moving into his rented home, Jonny hasn’t looked back.
“It was obviously very different to living at home with my parents, but having already experienced living away at university, it was something I adapted to very quickly. It’s been fantastic to have the freedom to do what you want, when you want. Including watch as much football as you like! It’s also enhanced my social life too, with being able to have friends round for some food or a drink. You can’t put a price on having your own independence.”

Gentoo is working on changing the perception of rented affordable housing in Sunderland, alongside the city’s vision to become a more vibrant, dynamic and healthy place to live. With properties readily available to rent across the city for young people who are in a similar position to Jonny, looking to gain their independence and that take that first step onto the property ladder, the Group is sure to have something for you. Finding a property with them is straightforward too, with the ‘find a home’ element of its website and the widely used ‘HomeHunt’ allocations process making the process of finding and applying for a rented home nice and simple. IN CONVERSATION:
Roxy Girls From the rip-roaring punk sounds of Leatherface to the chart-topping successes of multi platinumselling pop queen, Emeli Sandé, Sunderland has a habit of producing outstanding musicians. Roxy Girls are no exception. They may be new to the music world, but their intense debut album has seen the four-piece rocket to the forefront of post-punk music scene in a matter of months. We caught up with frontman, Tom Hawick, to discuss all things Sunderland, gigging in the ‘Big Apple’ and the fine folk at Pop Recs... Despite being ‘canny’ bairns, Roxy Girls mean business when it comes to music. A product of invaluable work going on at Sunderland’s very own Pop Recs, Roxy Girls are a born-and-raised punk whirlwind from the banks of the River Wear. Since the release of their debut EP in February 2018, this blistering band has gigged up and down the country (playing the likes of Brudenell Social Club and YES 24
Manchester), featured heavily on Mark Riley’s coveted BBC Radio 6 show and are now gearing up to release another quality dose of punk goodness sometime this year. Music has always been at the forefront of Tom Hawick’s life. From a young age, Tom has been surrounded by music something that dates all the way back to primary school: "I remember my dad playing Lindisfarne in the car to school when I was about 6" he recalls. "That was the first time music made my ears stand to attention really." This introduction to music has left a lasting impression on Tom. He's a die-hard music fan and this is clearly evident as he begins rattling through a list of influential artists
that changed his outlook: "I loved (and still love) The Who. (Bob) Dylan also played a huge part in the formation of my relationship with music. I guess the latter set me on the trajectory to discover John Martyn and Nick Drake when I was maybe 14 or 15. That was a major turning point. I was about 17 when I started getting into the punk music that helped inspire Roxy Girls." A Sunderland lad through-and-through, Tom has seen the city come through the ages and feels optimistic about the future for younger generations: "I feel like we're on the cusp of a big cultural advance within the city. Positive changes are ongoing, which are undoubtedly sending Sunderland in the right direction. There
@SunderlandVibe
is some reassurance in the existence of Pop Recs, Keel Square, and all the other cultural happenings that are occurring." Tom diverts the topic of conversation on to Pop Recs - a major driving force behind Sunderland’s growing culture scene. "They’ve (Pop Recs) persisted through the financial and motivational hardships created by increasingly dwindling gig attendances, beginning at the dawn of the Internet age, suffering further defeats by the hand of Instagram stories and rising pint prices. There's a lot to be said for that. They're ran by lovers of music, for lovers of music. There's even more to be said for that. Pop Recs really is a passion project, only taking enough to keep open its doors and the coffee machine full. It still manages to put on shows and keep music alive in the city." Mackems are famous for their undying love of the city. "Our music is often compared to The Futureheads and whether it's down to the fact I sing in my accent or not, it's a comparison that I'm very proud of". Since the release of their criticallyacclaimed EP in September last year, the lads have been overwhelmed with support. So much so, they’ve hunkered down in the studio and are preparing to release another EP! "We've got another seven-track EP coming out in March, our second on Moshi Moshi Records, which was home to some of our favourites - Bloc Party, The Drums, Florence and The Machine. We should have an album out next summer too. Hopefully, 20 songs and 45 minutes(ish) long!" 2020 is shaping up nicely for the boys from Wearside. As well as playing an exclusive support slot at The Futureheads’ massive Toon gig, the boys are jetting off to New York for an exclusive show too! "We’ll be doing a little bit of practicing and quite a lot of gigging. We're playing a show in the Big Apple next March and we can't quite believe it. SXSW might be on the cards too... wish us luck!"

The global University of Sunderland Every year, thousands of international students become part of the University of Sunderland’s global family. Many arrive to make the city their new home, some opt to stay in their own countries and study through long distance learning programmes, while campuses in London and Hong Kong become the base for others. The reach of the University community continues to extend to all parts of the globe, from Africa to Asia, America to Australia, making studying in Sunderland a truly international experience. Each student brings with them a rich diversity, which makes a huge contribution to life in the region, while others spread the good word and reputation of the city and institution in their homelands thousands of miles away. While many people may be familiar with the international student contingent living on Wearside, the reality is that the arm of the University reaches much wider, to countries including Kenya, Uzbekistan, and Barbados. Here, we meet some of the students helping to create the diverse, but united, community we are proud to call the University of Sunderland. 26

Rose Hopewell-Fong Hong Kong Rose grew up in Hong Kong, but later moved to England to study, where she also represented England U20s in Rugby Union. After a difficult decision to return home, she went on to represent Hong Kong 7s and 15s Rugby Union in a professional capacity. While all of this was going on, the now 29-year-old decided to embark on the University’s Independent Distance Learning PGCE programme, to pursue her dream of becoming a teacher. This year, Rose was awarded the University of Sunderland Alumni Achiever of the Year (Hong Kong) honour - another honour for Rose to add to her trophy cabinet, which already reflects her hard work, not to mention her multi-tasking skills. In the last two years, she has started and completed her Masters in International Education with Sunderland and become mum to Olivia Margaret, now 17 months old. Rose said: "There is no award for juggling multiple commitments in one’s personal life. An international sporting representative, a full-time worker, a part-time distance learner and becoming a mother – which will soon be twice - in just two years, has been hectic, yet so rewarding, to say the least. "While we all strive to achieve goals in our careers after graduating, it is so nice for personal achievements to be recognised too. Thank you University of Sunderland!"

Joel Manning Barbados, Eastern Caribbean Joel Manning left behind his mum and brother at the family’s home in Saint Michael, Barbados, to take the next step towards achieving his life’s ambition. The 27-year-old has been playing cricket since he was a schoolboy and his passion for the game led him to Wearside to take up an MA in Sports Journalism at the University. Up until a few months ago, Joel had been working and living in Barbados and had never considered the path to his future career could begin in Sunderland. Joel said: "After a bit of research on sports journalism courses in the UK, I chose Sunderland because it ranked among the top options. Their courses were NCTJaccredited allowing me to get both my degree and NCTJ qualifications. "Beyond this, I also saw potential opportunities to interact with prospective employers in the media industry and learn from lecturers who have experience in the field. "My experience so far has been nothing short of amazing, although the weather is cold! The course content has been engaging and lecturers have gone the extra mile to guide me towards my intended career. The media facilities and available equipment have made it easy to get the practical experience that employers are looking for today, too."

Nasreen Ali Kenya, Africa This year, Nasreen was named University of Sunderland’s Alumni Achiever of the Year (Kenya). The Business Management graduate is co-founder and chief financial officer at Cherchani Africa, a social enterprise which uses mobile technology to provide financial education to women and former street children who are running small businesses in Kenya. Nasreen, 32, said: "My mother was a micro-entrepreneur and I saw how difficult it was for her to keep her business sustainable. She borrowed from loan sharks whose high interest rates stagnated the potential of her business." "Witnessing her struggles made me really empathise with women and girls with a vision to start and run their own businesses." In 2014 she co-founded Cherehani Africa with a vision of supporting communities through access to financial services. Recently, she also launched Afrikapu, a social-enterprise that sells African handmade products made by marginalised women and young people in Africa.
Professor Lawrence Bellamy, Dean of the Faculty of Business, Law and Tourism at the University, has spent much of the past year visiting the international family in different parts of the world. He said: "The university has an exceptional international reach, with longstanding partnerships running from the Caribbean, across Africa, through the Middle East and into the Far East. "With some of these in existence now for 20 years, the number of students who have studied degrees with our partners now number in the many thousands. This gives Sunderland a rich community of alumni, spanning the world and in many sectors, with some reaching very high levels of office. "Whether in Nairobi, Trinidad, Tashkent, Singapore, Sri Lanka, India or Sunderland, it's clear that the students all go forward with strong ambition, optimism and a desire to really make a difference. "The same is true of the many nationalities of students who come to study with us in Sunderland. Often coming from regions which are more able to support the cost of studying away from home, they are looking for a UK higher education experience. "The cohorts we deal with are diverse and as such the many world-views come together in the classroom. This is beneficial for all students; after all, we are preparing professionals for the global careers they may have in the future. "Being a global university enriches both the city and the learning and lives of our students. They gain greater world views and experiences, have access to opportunities which they otherwise would not and are able to move forward with greater skills. The greater value comes from the broader economical and societal benefits which arise from these activities." 27

All-new exhibition! 1 February - 10 May This February, an impressive selection of paintings from one of the world’s largest collections of British contemporary and modern art will go on display at Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens as part of new exhibition, Received Wisdom. Celebrating age and creativity, Received Wisdom challenges the idea that creativity and innovation are the preserve of youth by bringing together a dynamic and thought-provoking collection of art created by older artists. From celebrated artists who have been working all their lives, or those whose art has only received recognition in their later years, to artists who only began producing art in their 60s or 70s - the breadth and range of the artworks on show are truly inspiring. Pieces by Lubaina Himid - a pioneer of the Black Arts movement in the 1980s who was awarded the famous Turner Prize in 2017 – will go on show alongside work by artists including Amikam Toren, Phyllida Barlow, John Sheehy, Elisabeth Vellacott and more. The major contemporary British art exhibition is the first in a three-year partnership with the acclaimed Arts Council Collection after Sunderland was chosen as one of just three places nationwide to be part of the Collection’s National Partnership Programme. The exhibition is accompanied by a jam-packed event programme suitable for all ages. These include adult art classes for those wanting to try a new creative skill, Creative Age sessions for older people with dementia, an Easter Art School, and plenty of free, fun family events to enjoy! Make 2020 the year you give quitting a go! Speak to most smokers and they will tell you they wish they’d never started. So whether you’re addicted to nicotine or a social smoker who lights up with friends, chances are you’d like to stop.
The good news is, there’s never been a better time to try. Sunderland Specialist Stop Smoking Service opened its doors in April last year and since then, has been helping smokers stub out the habit for good. With online tips, free apps and face to face support there’s something for everyone – and the key to success is to keep trying. Check out our top ten quitting tips below! 1. Get support - you’re more likely to succeed if you quit with specialist support and stop smoking aids. Sunderland Specialist Stop Smoking Service is available to help anyone in the city who wants to quit. 2. Never quit trying to quit – don’t be put off by previous quit attempts that may not have worked for you, think of these as a stepping stone! Different ways of quitting work for different people. 3. Feel less stressed - you might think smoking relieves stress, but it can make stress worse. Smoking only reduces nicotine withdrawal symptoms, similar to the symptoms of anxiety, but it does not reduce anxiety or deal with the underlying causes. 4. Consider using a quit aid - give yourself the best chance and use a quit aid such as nicotine replacement therapy like patches and gums, or a stop smoking medication prescribed by a GP, pharmacist or other health professional. 5. Switch to e-cigarettes – as they don’t contain tobacco they are considered much less harmful than cigarettes. The significant health problems are caused by other components in tobacco smoke and not by the nicotine.
6. Use free online support – there are lots of interactive apps and tools to help you quit. Download resources such as the Smokefree app onto your phone to help you make a plan or just have support whenever you need it. 7. Think of your health - tobacco smoke contains over 7,000 chemicals which can cause many diseases, including cancer, heart and lung disease. Your body will feel the health benefits after just 20 minutes of quitting. 8. Think of how much money you could save – someone smoking 20 cigarettes a day can expect to pay more than £3,200 a year, £250 a month and £63 a week. 9. Involve family and friends – their support can go a long way. If your partner smokes, why not quit together? 10. Avoid triggers – try to recognise when you are most likely to want to smoke, and learn how to manage those situations. Research shows you’re more likely to succeed if you quit with specialist support, so if you want to stop smoking give us a call.
