Woodland wow factor

If you think camping is just for kids, then think again. We say, rally the troops and head down to the woods for a seriously stylish stay-cation at the North Star Club in North Yorkshire. The brainchild of a fashion designer and an architect, the whimsical woodland retreat brings a whole new meaning to ‘glamping’ - ever seen four-poster beds and roll-top baths in vintage, safari-style tents? You’ll find that here. The luxury campsite, deep in the forest, marries outdoorsy ruggedness with five-star interiors throughout, creating one very chic campsite indeed for bridal parties to enjoy. Allow masseurs to visit your private suite for massages before you’re even out of your PJs, go stargazing under the canopied campfire or cosy up in the communal Woodshed. Toast marshmallows under fairy lights and over crackling fires, before curling up together for a natter with a glass of red. WEEKEND BREAKS FROM £455.

Swap sugary cocktail-making classes with butlers in the buff for something a little more elegant and exclusive at The Lakes Distillery. The award-winning distillery, famed for its own brand of whisky, gin and vodka, has teamed up with Cockermouth’s snug and stylish Trout Hotel to offer bridal parties a tasty two-night break filled with spirited celebrations. Suitable for groups of six to 16, the experience begins with an entertaining distillery tour, accompanied by a specialist guide, followed by a privately-tutored tasting of its world-class signature spirits. Parties will also be treated to a spot of Gin Afternoon Tea, with special Gin Fizz cocktails to complement dainty treats. You’ll retire to your rooms at the newly-renovated Trout Hotel via your very own branded chauffeur-driven 4x4 Discovery, before heading down for a three-course dinner. Ooh la la

Chic Château

Spoiling guests with grand, stylish interiors, fine food and thoughtful little extras, Le Petit Château stands out from the crowd not only as one Northumberland’s most luxurious wedding venues, but one of its hottest hotels too. Jessica Laing checks in... It’s not often we spend a good 15 minutes photographing our hotel room before we even put down our bags, but that’s exactly what happened when my partner and I opened the doors to our room at Le Petit Château. I’ll admit, we were spoiled with The ‘L’ Apartment. It is one chic suite. Anyone who’s stayed - or been married - here will tell you the same. It turns out, it’s the room in which lucky bridal quads primp, preen and lay their heads before the big day at this romantic retreat in Otterburn - and it’s every bit as luxurious as you’d expect. One of the venue’s 29 boutique bedrooms and suites, it’s a large, open-plan space, filled with shabby-chic decor and Pinterest-worthy interiors and textiles. Colours are deliciously

WEDDING ESSENTIALS MARCH/APRIL 17

moody; deep olive-green walls, mink rugs and floaty curtains, exposed red brickwork, scuffed fireplaces and sandy stone flooring. A large velvet sofa takes pride of place in the living area, a vibrant shade of electric turquoise. Twinkling chandeliers and an abundance of mismatched floor lights, with vintage lampshades, provide the low, hazy light. Floor-to-ceiling mirrors are dotted around, giving the illusion of even more space. The bathrooms (there are two) have a distinct Moroccan feel, with their deep, ruby red walls, rustic copper sinks and taps. The shower room was our favourite, quite simply for the mesmerising, floor-to-ceiling mosaic stone tiles. Tiles we loved so much, that we couldn’t leave without asking where the

08

designer purchased them from. The master bedroom is somewhere between snug and grand. We took great pleasure retiring to our four-poster bed after dinner, happily sinking in to plush, marshmallow-like duvets and snuggling down on crisp white sheets, with full bellies and a bit of late-night telly. And in the morning, sitting down at the long, elegant dressing table (no doubt the designated bridesmaid station) made getting ready feel like a less laborious, more luxurious task. It gave the room that French boudoir feel. Luxe little extras (which we took full advantage of and scoffed at first sight) include complimentary Netflix, which you can watch on two flatscreen TVs, a bottle of prosecco on ice and a box of chocolates on arrival, warm fluffy

Ooh la la towels at the ready, presented in a neat wooden crate, and two generous hampers filled with a feast of goodies, including artisan tea and coffee, hot chocolate and buttery shortbread, and fresh water. Simple pleasures that turn a good stay into a great one. After freshening up and taking what felt like a thousand photos of our prized abode, we migrated a whole twenty-something steps next door to William De Percy Inn & Crêperie for a spot of dinner. This glam gastropub boasts the same good looks as Le Petit Château; think reclaimed floorboards and cool-toned stone flooring, terracotta brickwork, twinkling chandeliers, and gleaming copper accents. The lighting is low and soft and upholstery is a trendy mix of leather and wood. It’s a classy joint, but there’s no pretension in the air or real formality when it comes to dining. The vibe is infectiously laid-back - great for couples, like us, who were looking to kick-back and unwind after travelling from afar. Like any good village inn, it’s home to an extensive range of craft beers and ales from breweries all over the country, as well as a well-stocked cellar of house and fine wines, and a short, but sophisticated, cocktail menu. A beer and a small glass of red did us nicely. Its food offering, meanwhile, goes above and

beyond your typical pub grub; it’s hearty, but sophisticated, beautifully-presented and prepared with local produce. The team have solid bonds with nearby home-growers, raisers and catchers and do a great and gutsy job of showing off the rewards of their hard work. You don’t have to be a guest to dine here - you can stop by for light bites and lunchy eats, Sunday roasts or even just a crêpe or two (which are always freshly-made), but on this occasion we settled down for three courses each. Starters combined spot-on portions with big, punchy flavour. Mine was the Eldson goats cheese pannacotta; a cool, creamy dome joined by a heaped spoonful of tomato and onion jam

and dainty crostinis, brushed with fragrant basil oil, for dunking. While the cheese wasn’t as strong as I’d anticipated, the sticky, tart jam added plenty of lip-smacking flavour. The two flavours married together perfectly, resulting in sweet and creamy mouthfuls, while the crunchy crostinis added bite and a delicious cheesy hum. My other half chose the tempura king prawns – four plump and fluffy beauties encased in a crispy, golden batter – on a bed of delicate, noodle-like Asian slaw and chilli sauce. A does-what-it-says-on-the-tin dish done really well. Big, fat, fresh prawns – is there anything better?

Ooh la la The fish theme continued into mains; for him, good old fish and chips, and for me, pan-fried seabass. The locally-caught cod arrived tender and flaky – as long and as thick as our forearm. Make sure you have an appetite if you’re ordering this beauty. The light, bubbly batter was done really well not at all oily - as were the herby mushy peas, chunky, chips and tartar sauce - all homemade. A faultless plate. The seabass was also a winner; two bone-free fillets with crispy, easy-to-remove skin, joined by fresh Chinese-style cabbage and veg, drizzled in a refreshing lemongrass and ginger dressing. We somehow managed to sneak in two desserts before we retired to our room for plenty of food-induced kip; a slice of dark, deliciously rich, chocolate ganache tart and a doorstopsized wedge of homemade sticky toffee pudding, drenched in a smooth and silky butterscotch sauce. Talk about weekend indulgence. Safe to say, we slept like a pair of spoilt, well-fed babies and there was something very satisfying indeed knowing that we’d be returning the next morning for brekkie. When we did, we were greeted with the same smiles and warm service we’d received the night before, along with a few treats from the small continental buffet. Two ‘morning shots’ (essentially an energyboosting yogurt with fresh berries) kicked things off nicely - a nice touch we thought - before we sat down to a full English, bursting with local Northumbrian goodness, and a plate of smoked salmon, creamy scrambled eggs and fresh fruit. Both hit the spot.

Wedding Matters

Fancy getting hitched at Le Petit Château? Here’s six reasons why we love it… Checking-out was bittersweet. Taking some time out to admire the rest of our surroundings, such as Le Petit Château’s enchanting French Chapel ceremony room, with its crystal chandelier and giant marble fireplace, and grand Château Ballroom and palm tree-fringed views, reminded us of what a unique, whimsical wedding venue this really is. No wonder so many North East brides and grooms-to-be have fallen - and continue to fall - in love with the place. And as far as hotel stays go, we really couldn’t fault our time spent here. Kudos to the staff, chefs and those sneaky interior designers who have now made us want to go out and buy copious amounts of Moroccan-style tiles and fill our home with copper sinks. Together, they’ve created a stylish slice of affordable luxury that everyone can indulge in, whether you’re walking down the aisle or simply tucking in for the night.

Dine like the French - and that means only the finest food and drink! Awardwinning, in-house chefs will work with you to create your dream menus; everything from vintage tea parties to fine dining, posh finger food and meadow picnics to hog roasts, BBQs and Asian banquets. Thinking of a summer wedding? Head to the venue’s secret, palm tree-filled Mediterranean Garden and say ‘I do’ on the outdoor terrace, where you and your guests can cosy up under twinkling fairy lights and around crackling fire pits, babbling water fountains and romantic ruins. You may be keen to share your love with the world, but are you happy to share your big day, too? No worries Le Petit Château is exclusively yours. Armed with a team of industry professionals, wedding awards and a boatload of experienced wedding coordinators, planning your big day at Petit Château couldn’t be less stressful. Even your Master of Ceremonies acts as your very own personal butler on your big day. Splitting up your evening guests into separate rooms for drinks and disco can disrupt your day. At Le Petit Château, you’re never encouraged to split up your guests. The team like to talk numbers. Whether you’re working to a budget or fancy designing your own lavish package, Le Petit Château offers various pricing levels, all-inclusive packages and often special offers, meaning there’s something out there for everyone.

WE WED HERE Originally from Northumberland, Annabel Lavery and Nathan Williamson live in Dubai. They were one of the first couples to get hitched at Le Petit Château, back in 2014... Celebrating our wedding at Le Petit Château felt like home…we’ve lived in Dubai for three years now, so it was important to us that we returned to Northumberland for our big day. We also wanted a venue that could offer plenty of accommodation, so all of our friends and family could stay over - especially those who were travelling over to see us.

We looked at a number of venues in the North East, but Le Petit Château stood out… at the time of our wedding it was a brand new venue - some of it was still under renovation so we actually chose it just from looking at the plans. We knew the Apartment Group would do a great job - and it looked fabulous.

Our wedding coordinator, Katherine, was extremely helpful… we met here as often as we could when we got back in the UK, but had a lot of

correspondence with her via email when in Dubai. She was lovely and went out of her way to make the planning process as traightforward as possible.

We tied the knot at St Robert’s Church in Morpeth and our reception took place at Le Petit Château’s ballroom… where guests collected their welcome drinks, before walking out to the garden through the double doors. We had a saxophonist playing for them arriving, which was lovely.

We had complete freedom when it came to decorating the room… The Finishing Touches Company styled the room for us, providing everything from the centrepieces to the flowers. We had white hydrangeas everywhere - on the fireplace, the bar, the ledges - and sequinned silver runners on every table. The venue lended itself so well and it turned out exactly how I imagined.

of canapés for the drinks reception, then a soup/pate starter, roast chicken and beef for mains, and sticky toffee pudding and white chocolate and raspberry cheesecake. We also had a traditional threecourse wedding breakfast with palate cleansers in between. The venue helped us out so much, ensuring all of our guests were catered for - including the vegetarians, vegans and those with allergies. Our guests ate what they wanted on the day and many of them still talk about the food now.

We filled all of the venue’s bedrooms, as well as the rooms at William De Percy Inn next door… and we couldn’t fault any of them. They’re all individuallydesigned and decorated to a very high standard.

The staff Le Petit Château are excellent and were always on hand to make sure we enjoyed ourselves… Laura, the manager, was so accommodating too. They even surprised us with singing waiters, who performed as the desserts were being served.

We’d recommend Le Petit Château to anyone… not only is it an exceptionally good-looking venue, with beautiful, well-kept gardens and grounds, it offers great food and stylish accommodation. Brides and grooms can breathe a sigh of relief knowing they’re in the hands of experts who will make sure their day runs smoothly - like ours!

Cake… it’s a pretty important part of the day, right? There are a ton of places to visit and people to speak to on your quest for spectacular sponge, but one of our favourite makers for designer creations and other sweet treats has to be Dreamworld Cakes. Based on the banks of Ouseburn, the pretty parlour and awardwinning cake studio is ran by Bernadett Szucs and her partner Richard - two exceptional pastry chefs with an eye for detail and heaps of creative flair. Their show-stopping designs have been admired and scoffed at a string of high-class events, including Chelsea Flower Show, Royal Ascot and Buckingham Palace garden parties. Head there and get sketching and tasting before they begin creating your dream cake(s), draped, covered and filled with whatever flavours and fancy fondant you desire. They’re also rather handy with other dainty treats, like macarons and speciality biscuits, which they make in their newly-opened patisserie, next door. Check them out if you’re in the market for some fab, edible favours. They deliver throughout the North East.

Say it right

Chalkboards are one of our favourite ‘in-things’ for 2017 weddings. Not only do they look the part, they give brides and grooms the chance to get creative and address their guests their way through welcome signs, table plans and more. If you don’t fancy giving it a go yourselves, call up the experts, like Danni Hesketh, the creative mind behind Chief Chalker. A senior bridal and marketing consultant by day, Danni knows what makes a wedding spectacular and she puts her passion for all things bridal into her business - which she set up in 2016. Her bespoke, handdrawn chalkboards are a thing of beauty, finished off with stylish rose-gold detailing. They make gorgeous gifts and can be tailor-made for any special occasion, but for weddings, Danni can create all kinds of personalised signage, from directional signs and ‘order of the day’ boards, to seating plans, guestbook details and meaningful quote signs. Each one is lovingly-made from scratch, meaning all designs are unique in flair and one-of-a-kind. Brainstorm with Danni and dream-up ideas that fit with your style, or leave it to her expert imagination. Personalised gifts start from £8, while wedding and events board range from £25-£150 depending on size and design.

If a traditional wedding cake isn’t for you, or if you fancy giving guests something a bit different, something memorable, to curb end-of-the-night cravings, then why not look to street food. The North East’s street food scene is booming, with trendy trucks and on-the-go vans serving out gourmet delights from around the globe. The region’s favourite burger joint, Fat Hippo, can pull up to weddings in the form of a travelling burger bar, ready to serve up its renowned meaty treats, fresh from the grill with a whole range of mouthwatering toppings and lashings of its trademark sauce. Want to spice things up? Chucho Tavizon’s homemade tacos are to-die-for (and Luxe approved), all inspired by recipes handed down by his family, and add plenty of fiesta fun to any post-ceremony bash. Or, if you insist on sweetening guests up at the end of the night, then why not give The Doughnut Guy a call. This chap quit his day job in favour of a sweeter, more fulfilling way of life, and his fluffy creations are nothing short of incredible. Hot, moreish, sprinkled with sugar and topped and smothered with all kinds of candy treats.

The clever people at Aveda have launched a brand new skincare duo that targets pre-wedding complexions, flooding skin with moisturising oils and plant stem cells for an instant boost of radiance. The new Tulasara Wedding Masques Overnight for the face (£48) and eyes (£38) are filled with 97% naturally-derived ingredients, such as tumeric root and algae extracts, organic apricot seed oil, as well as over a million plant stem cells in every 50ml jar. Pat and massage the ultra-rich creme-masques into the skin before you hit the sheets and awaken to a more plumped, ready-to-party skin. Stick at it for a few weeks before the big day for maximum results.

There was a time when quirky alternatives to traditional wedding cars - like double-decker vans and surfer-style camper vans - were having a bit of a moment, but we like to think many of you out there still have a soft spot for classic cars to chauffeur you to and from your venue in old-school style. If you are, Elite Wedding Cars is one to check out - a North East favourite that’s been going strong for over 20 years. They’re based in County Durham, but cover the whole of the region, including Newcastle, Sunderland, Middlesbrough, Darlington, Richmond and Thirsk, and specialise in jaw-dropping bridal and bridesmaids cars. Their line-up includes a 1930s Beauford Convertible wedding car, silver and coffee-and-cream Brenchley wedding cars, Rolls Royce and Mercedes limousines and more, and all chauffeurs are fully-uniformed and experienced drivers.

Available at Aveda salons nationwide.

Wedding planning timeline IMMEDIATELY • Work out how many people you expect to attend the day and evening of your wedding. Rough numbers are fine at first, however this can often dictate which venue is suitable • Draw up a budget, so you know how much money you have to play with • View and decide on a wedding venue and date - you can’t start without knowing these details! • Begin researching suppliers, including photographers, florists and cake-makers! • Look for your dream dress! Research styles and visit bridal boutiques

Tick box time The details you might have forgotten…

Planning your wedding day is a special time, filled with fun and exciting tasks, like caketasting, flower-picking and dress-shopping, but it can also be a little overwhelming. The ‘to-do’ list seems to grow on a daily basis; venues confirmed? Deposits paid? Seating plan sorted? Not to mention the budget and a contingency fund for any unexpected costs. Legal issues arising from your marriage are the less obvious details to consider, but they can be every bit as important as the shade of the groom’s tie. In fact, even more so in the long run. Take a look at our wedding planning timeline to keep you in check…

9 - 12 MONTHS • Order your dress • Select your bridal party • Book your key suppliers • View potential bands or DJs and book your chosen form of entertainment • Research/book accommodation for any guests who are travelling from afar • Book your hen party - the fun starts now! 6 - 9 MONTHS • Send your ‘save the date’ invites • Organise dress fittings with your bridesmaids and order the dresses • Book your honeymoon - there’s a whole world out there! • Order your wedding rings 3 - 6 MONTHS • Order your groomsmen’s suits. • Begin your hair and makeup trials • Order your wedding cake

ONE MONTH • Pull together your final guest list and double-check numbers • Plan your seating chart • Have your final wedding dress fitting and ensure all bridesmaid dresses and groomsmen’s suits fit • Print out your order of service, menus or anything else you may need • Buy gifts for your bridal party and parents • Send your picture list to your photographer THE WEEK BEFORE • Finalise your seating chart • Confirm your details with all of your suppliers • Have your wedding rehearsal

All in the detail No doubt about it, weddings are the time to max out on the ‘to do’ lists. And it’s important too, in between the flowers and fancies to reflect on the finances. Not just the cost of a wedding but the financials in terms of making a will, deciding whether a pre or post-nuptial agreement is necessary (a way to futureproof your assets if you have a business, property or children from a previous relationship for example), or looking ahead to the legal aspects of home-buying together. Law firm Tilly Bailey & Irvine has produced a thorough guide to all aspects of wedding planning – financial and beyond.

2 - 3 MONTHS • Buy your accessories • Send out your invitations • Apply for your marriage license • Consider your wedding dress alterations • Choose your menu(s)

For a free copy visit www.tbilaw.co.uk Tilly Bailey & Irvine Law Firm is on hand to guide you through all stages of your life and few are as life-changing as your wedding day.
