DATABASE AND NARRATIVE?

Thanks to Isabelle L’Heureux for her help with the documentary research

DATABASE AND NARRATIVE? The key term that now represents the facilitation of digital media in online environments is convergence and the range of activities associated with these environments are grouped under the term of convergence culture (Jenkins, 2006).

DATABASE AND NARRATIVE? As a cultural form, the database represents the world as a list of items, and it refuses to order this list. In contrast, a narrative creates a cause and effect trajectory of seemingly unordered items (events). Therefore, database and narrative are cultural enemies. Competing for the same territory of human culture, each claims an exclusive right to make meaning out of the world. (Manovich, 2001: 225)

Thanks to Isabelle L’Heureux for her help with the documentary research

DATABASE AND NARRATIVE? New media, as modes of nonlinear storytelling and communication, help us see that in a much broader cognitive and ideological sense, narrative is also a means of patterning and interpreting the meaning of all sensory input and ‘object of knowledge’ . . . For narratives map the world and its inhabitants and locate us within that textual landscape and seascape, requiring a constant refiguring of our mental cartography with its supporting databases, search engines and representational conventions. (Kinder, 2003: 97) Thanks to Isabelle L’Heureux for her help with the documentary research

DATABASE AND NARRATIVE? Database Documentary is a relatively new form of documentary storytelling that uses the combined elements of digital media and on-line platforms. Traditionally, the kind of documentary production linked to Database Documentary is built on a research practice in which access to an archive or other sources of knowledge and information is key. Archives are normally collections of texts, images, letters, and objects, usually in support of an individual's work or legacy or that of a social or public institution. (‌) In this regard, the role of a Database Documentary producer is closer to a curator or designer (Cohen, 2012). Thanks to Isabelle L’Heureux for her help with the documentary research

DATABASE AND NARRATIVE? We are coming to recognize, then, gradually but inevitably, that database is a new genre, the genre of the twenty-first century. Its development may turn out to be the most significant effect computer culture will have on the literary world (Folson,2007).
