Weddings have always made me cry. My own wedding was a simple and intimate affair, which is good, because at 25 years old, my event planning skills weren’t yet wellpracticed. While my Big Day was a lovely event, knowing what I know now, after attending countless weddings as a more mature adult, I would do a few things differently. For example, I’ve seen the impact of adding in little details that tell the couple’s story. Seemingly small touches, such as hiring a jazz manouche band for the ceremony to commemorate the couple’s first date on Frenchman Street or serving a dessert at the reception inspired by the restaurant where they got engaged, invite guests into their world and add another layer of love and romance. That said, even a short, sweet city hall wedding can evoke tears when it’s so obvious that two people who love one another are saying “I do.” Whether your dream nuptials are a glammed up affair for 500 or a simple exchange of vows in your favorite outdoor space, you’ll glean inspiration from these pages. For our fashion spread on page 38, we took over the Columns on St. Charles Avenue to imagine a lush, romantic Southern Modern wedding. The grounds and interiors of the beloved hotel have been given a soulful makeover and we are here for it. Couples can deck out the various spaces at the hotel with personal touches or leave it as is and have a stunning event either way. From venues like the Columns and your Big Day makeup to dessert at the reception, we hope you use this issue as a resource for making your wedding dream a reality. Cheers!

A Local Fare to Remember
Fresh,
seasonal and local reception cuisine adds flavor, fun and a sense of place
BY AMY GABRIEL
You’re the type of couple who frequents the Crescent City Farmers Market to kiss amid the kumquats and consider the smell of a fresh-out-of-the-oven Bellegarde Bakery baguette your shared love language. So when it comes to mapping out your wedding reception menu, the idea of going primarily with local and seasonal farm-to-table cuisine has planted roots in your romantic mind.
“We have definitely seen couples asking for more locally sourced items and have seen more intentional menu planning based on the time of year of their event,” said Walker Geoffray, owner and chef of Black Pearl Catering.
From canapes to buffets to main courses, Geoffray often incorporates regional nods in the reception fare, thanks in part to the growing availability of resources.
“The South, being so hot, has a longer growing season and therefore we can get local produce and seafood almost all year round,” said Geoffray, noting ideas like goat cheesecake appetizers made from goat’s milk from Franklinton, fresh field pea salads for lighter side dishes to accompany cochon de lait and grilled bavette at carving stations.
Recalling a couple desirous of incorporating satsumas into the menu as an homage to the bride’s grandfather’s property in Thibodaux, Geoffray sees the idea of a locally inspired menu as a creative way to introduce your guests to the city where you’ve chosen to celebrate.
“The food that you serve to your wedding guests may challenge their
notion of what wedding food should be, but that can hopefully start a conversation about what really makes New Orleans special. For some it’s a small nod to a memory tied to growing up in Louisiana, for others it’s a want to be able show their guests what is at its peak locally in and around New Orleans.”
Chef Amy Mehrtens of Bonfire Events + Catering encourages couples who are interested in seasonal and regional fare in their wedding menu to weigh in not only time of year, but availability of product.
“If you come to New Orleans, the ingredient sourcing will be what the Gulf Coast has to offer,” said Mehrtens, noting Ponchatoula strawberry season in the warmer temps and Plaquemines Parish satsuma season in the wintertime. “These locally grown ingredients are optimal during those seasons which creates a rare experience for those enjoying them.”
Mehrtens, who loves to get creative with her farm-to-table options for plant-based bites to the tune of eggplant caponata tartine, cucumber and radish tea sandwiches, blackberry and blue cheese canapes and Creole tomato bruschetta, believes these local incorporations are a fun way to get your partygoers bonding.
“New Orleans is all about the food,” said Mehrtens. “When people travel to this city there will naturally be ingredients they are not used to seeing and eating. This will lead to discussion and create memories to reflect on with their friends when they think of their time here.” b

Visions of the beloved labels lined up behind your bar are dancing in your head, you’ve crafted customized signature sips that speak to your personalities and prepped for a round of welcome drinks that will have the festivites in full swing before you even step into the scene as newlyweds. What more can send your reception into a next level celebration? When it’s time to get sweet, surprise your guests with creative libations to coordinate with dessert service.
“Traditionally, most guests stay with the same bar offerings for the entire event,” said Christian Pendleton, general manager of Brennan’s. “However, after the cake is cut, and the event draws to a close, bringing in new food and

new drinks is a fun way to renew the energy and leaves guests talking about this unexpected surprise. Dessert cocktails can serve as a subtle reminder that the event is nearing its conclusion, while also demonstrating that every part of the event has been considered and planned. It opens the final chapter to the party.”
For winter weddings, Pendleton suggests ideas like an Irish coffee cocktail paired with a Bananas Foster station, or, for receptions during the day, a bar dedicated to brunch beverages like a brandy milk punch to pair with a doughnut or beignet display.
Quinn Richard, owner of Cocktail + Creative, reminds that it’s important to balance the savory and the sweet aspects to your cocktail choices
during dessert service.
“You don’t want to overwhelm your guests with anything overly sweet,” said Richard, who suggests ideas like warm chai-based cocktails or apple brandy with bitters for cold weather weddings. “Depending on the season, you can really play up the flavor profiles by infusing your dessert cocktails with dried herbs, edible flowers or fruits. Bringing in those elements as garnishes that play up the color palette of your event also make very Instagrammable moments for your guests.”
Richard sees these types of dessert drinks, which can be rolled in on bar carts as an unexpected treat after the toasts, as ways to create a more elevated experience. “Slow sippers help people take in the last
hour or moments of the event and bring a little more refinement and camaraderie to the night.”
Drew Kingswell, bar manager at Saint John, considers the idea of dessert cocktail service as an exciting way to keep the party going, even as it’s winding down.
“Dessert cocktails are a great way to end any dinner, or continue to enjoy the table’s company afterwards,” said Kingswell, suggesting ideas like pairing limoncello with lemon icebox pie or introducing edible shot glasses made of chocolate and filled with Godiva or Baileys.
“Even if someone is full, a surprise digestif can be an awesome way to keep them engaged and satisfied when everyone else is ready to leave.” b

It’s always fun to discover off-the-beaten-path venues that embody the personalities of the engaged couple. Here, we take a look at a variety of spaces that will ensure the quintessential New Orleans wedding of your dreams.
THE FRENCHMEN HOTEL
The Frenchmen Hotel, which was originally built in 1860, has been completely reimagined and redesigned by Denver-based FAM Design and hospitality entrepreneur Robert Thompson (who purchased the hotel in 2021). The redesign takes inspiration from Leonor Fini (a major figure in the French surrealist movement) who is known for her independence and eccentric, flamboyant style. In addition to 23 guest rooms, two loft suites and two two-bedroom suites, the hotel features a first-floor bar called Tiki Tock with space for 300 guests and a rooftop/mezzanine with capacity for 90 guests. Full buyout of the spaces is available, as are custom packages. thefrenchmenhotel.com
FIRE HOUSE LOFT
Fire House Loft is a gorgeous and unique space in New Orleans that’s perfect for bridal parties, showers and receptions for up to 113 guests. The property, which started off as an Airbnb, now acts as an art gallery featuring 1,700 square feet of entertaining space (including two bedrooms and two full bathrooms). One of the former bedrooms has been converted to a private dressing room. The space also photographs extremely well thanks to the exposed brick walls. Rental of the space includes use of the entire facility, plus all in-house furniture and kitchen equipment. Fire House Loft also provides private security during the evenings. Catering is allowed, as is bringing in alcohol, but guests must use bartenders from a pre-approved list. firehouseloft.com

Five local photographers share their top tips for spectacular wedding day photos
BY MISTY MILIOTO
Photography is quite possibly the single most important line item when it comes to wedding budgets. Not only do photos capture the special moments on a couple’s Big Day, but they will last long after the “I Do.” It’s important to not only find a photographer who matches your style and personality, but also someone who is professional, courteous and capable. Here, five local photographers share their best tips for choosing someone who fits the bill.
SEPTEMBER COMPANY
Between big weddings and small elopements, Thad Billiot and Caitlin Guidry, the husband-and-wife photography duo behind September Company, have photographed nearly 150 couples in New Orleans since starting their business in 2016. Their top tip is for couples to research a few different photographers to find a style that really speaks to them.
Thad and Caitlin also know how important it is for couples to not only consider their wedding photographer’s style but also their personality and professionalism. “You’ll spend lots of time with your wedding photographer on such an important day, so hop on a call to make sure it’s a good fit,” Caitlin says. “Also read their reviews to make sure past clients have had a
good experience. It’s also a good idea to see some of their full galleries at venues similar to yours.”
If a couple prefers to have more candid photos, Caitlin recommends that couples keep their must-have photo list short. “Let your photographer capture the moments of the day that you didn’t even know would happen,” she says. “Trust between the couple and the photographer will always translate to more meaningful photos.”
Yet another way to ensure fantastic wedding photos is to hire a wedding planner or coordinator who can ensure that all of the details of the day are going smoothly. “That way, you can focus on enjoying your day, and your photographer can focus on capturing it in photographs,” Caitlin says. theseptemberco.com
LINKA ODOM PHOTOGRAPHY
Local wedding photographer Linka Odom has always loved the nostalgia and timelessness of photography. Having shot nearly 75 weddings in New Orleans since 2018, she believes in equality, diversity, expression, respect and growth. She also enjoys capturing a couple’s eccentricities, intimacy and true love.
58 WINTER/SPRING 2023 DETAILS PHOTOGRAPHY
BRIDENEWORLEANS.COM 59
Her No. 1 tip for couples is to always have a phone call or meeting with a potential photographer to ensure there is a mutual, natural connection. She also recommends that couples think about what is unique to them, and then hire a photographer that aligns with those points.
“Also make sure your photographer discusses the photography timeline with you,” she says. “Crafting a custom photography timeline will help the day run smoothly. Another great idea is to keep things really simple or hire a day-of wedding planner at the very least. Finally, the getting-ready location can add so much to your wedding day. Do your research or ask your wedding photographer for their advice on venues.” linkaodom.com
STACY MARKS PHOTOGRAPHY
Since 2000, New Orleans wedding photographer Stacy Marks has shot nearly 1,800 weddings, and he was named Photographer of the Year in 2004 by a number of local vendors. He suggests that couples ask friends for referrals to find out how they enjoyed the entire experience. “Also, ask your venue who they recommend,” Marks says. “They’ve seen everyone and know how they dress and work.”
Just as important as referrals, Marks says that couples should get a contract in writing from the photographer who is actually shooting the wedding. “After all, that is the work you saw and wanted,” he says. “Sometimes, second or third shooters will show up on your day instead if it’s a big company.”
When it comes to pre-bridal events or engagement photos at notable New Orleans locations, Marks says to book appointments during the week when those locations aren’t as busy. “Finally, relax and let the professional you hired capture your day with his or her eye and experience,” he says. “You will be much happier with the end result.” stacymarks.com
MICHAEL CASWELL PHOTOGRAPHY
Michael Caswell, a local wedding photographer who has shot more than 700 weddings since 2005 in New Orleans and the Southeast, says that, first and foremost, it is important for couples to carefully plan the time of their ceremony. “The preferred light for outdoor photography is generally going to be the last hour before sunset, with the absolute best light being in the last half hour,” he says. “Consider ending the ceremony around sunset, so that the entire ceremony can be captured with natural light.”
Caswell also suggests doing first-look photographs. A main benefit is that the photographer can take most, if not all, of the formal group shots before the ceremony (so the couple can quickly get to the reception). Another benefit is being able to get daytime shots (if it’s a nighttime wedding).
Additionally, Caswell says that couples should gather any detail items they want photographed (such as jewelry, perfume, shoes or the wedding invitation suite) prior to the photographer arriving so that precious time isn’t lost. “Your florist also may be able to supply
some loose flowers, or the bride can provide fabric scraps from her dress alterations — both of which are helpful for these shots.”
Finally, Caswell says to include some buffer time for the day of the wedding. “This way, a delay has less of a chance of cascading down to the rest of the schedule,” he says. michaelcaswell.com
BRIAN JARREAU
PHOTOGRAPHY
Brian Jarreau is a local wedding photographer known for his breathtaking photojournalistic style and amiable personality. His main tip is for couples to prioritize their photography budget.
“Your photographs will be the cornerstone of posterity for one of the most important days of your life,” he says. “These photographs will be the treasured moments you share with your loved ones for generations to come.”
Jarreau also suggests that couples should not feel the need to fit a certain trend. Instead, he urges couples to incorporate personal touches that make the couple unique. Equally important, he says, is that couples actually talk to their photographer either via phone or in person.
Yet another tip Jarreau shares is that couples should be specific with all of their vendors about times and locations, and that means planning out the imagery with their photographer. “My studio uses a Wedding Day Details form to collect all the pertinent information,” he says.
Finally, Jarreau says that couples should make time for portraits with each other. “Sometimes your wedding day timeline is tight, and you don’t have the time to spend on solid portraits of the two of you,” he says. brianjarreau.com

(trumpet) and Phil Morin (saxophone) in 2016. Since the band’s start, Bag of Donuts averages about 100 shows per year, 20 of which are weddings. It’s also the first cover band to be inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame.
A band known for its high energy and over-the-top costumes, Bag of Donuts plays what Christopher calls “SuperPop” — party songs from every decade to current interpretations of New Orleans culture and clever mashups with a jam-band experience. “Folks tell us all that time things like, ‘This felt more like a rock concert or dance party than a wedding,’” Christopher says. “That’s the kind of energy we bring to every
performance, so we’re looking for couples who are looking for that type of experience.” bagofdonuts.com
NOLA DUKES BAND
Nola Dukes Band — a premium, customizable, three- to 14-piece band — consists of live music experts, wedding enthusiasts and party-starters. The most popular seven-piece band consists of two vocalists, guitar, keys, bass, drums and one horn. The band has been performing since 2012 and has played at thousands of weddings.
“There’s no better feeling than seeing the look of love when a couple’s friends and family join them on the dance floor,” says Randi
Adlesic, musician and producer. “We will make sure you and your guests have the night of your lives, because we pride ourselves on contagious energy. We are also there to help you curate your own personal playlist for your special day with a variety of genres to get all your guests grooving.” noladukesband.com
SUNNY SIDE JAZZ BAND
Formally named in January 2020, Sunny Side Jazz Band consists of Darold Alexander (vocals), Adam Arredondo (trumpet), Adam Lessnau (trombone), Andy Page (alto /tenor/ soprano saxophone), Soren Andrade (guitar), Steve Walch (upright bass) and Rob Montgomery (drums, band

“Playing jazz sometimes has a stigma of light background music,” Montgomery says. “However, we aim to showcase early and midcentury jazz and swing, which has an energy that is infectious.” sunnysidejazz.com
THE TOPCATS
Another popular New Orleans band, This year, the Topcats, celebrate 40 years of playing together with the same band members. The band consists of Buzzy Langford (guitar, vocals), David Gamble (keyboards), Pat Campbell (bass, vocals) and Robert Schulte (drums, vocals). Since they started the band, they have played more than 1,000 weddings. The Topcats have a vast setlist covering music from the 1940s to the latest hits.
“The band prides itself on being able to play any kind of music, catering to the old and young alike,” David says. “We are a fourpiece band capable of creating the sound of a 10-piece band, without distracting from the setting or overcrowding the party area. Our goal is to keep the dance floor packed throughout the entire reception.” thetopcats.com
DJS
AARON LANE ENTERTAINMENT
Aaron Lane started performing as a DJ at 13, and has consistently performed for more than 20 years (including more than 500 weddings). “I absolutely love performing for receptions, because it’s not only a celebration of love (which we need more of in this world), but it’s a time of joy and togetherness with both friends and family,” he says. “I love being able to take a couple’s taste in music and translate that into a personalized entertainment experience for them and their guests.”
Aaron Lane Entertainment is focused on making sure the music reflects the couple. “Everyone on our team has performed extensively in nightclubs and shows, so we’re able to bring that experience to the reception,” Lane says. “I’ve had weddings that only wanted the classics, and weddings that wanted EDM for three hours.” aaronlaneentertainment.com
DJ KEREM
Kerem Ozkan performed as a DJ since 2014, and has more than 50 weddings under his belt. His main goal when performing at weddings is to remember he is part of a couple’s momentous day. ”The joy that folks feel at a wedding truly cannot be compared to anything else,” he says.
DJ Kerem works closely with couples to learn about their taste in music. He then draws upon his existing library to prepare a wide selection of music appropriate for the wedding. “Doing that prep work in advance gives me a lot of freedom to improvise in the moment and read the crowd,” Ozkan says. keremthedj.com
MOBILE BEAT ENTERTAINMENT
Jeff Tircuit, a DJ with Mobile Beat Entertainment, has been performing in the greater New Orleans area for 22 years (including about 1,200 weddings). In addition to having years of experience, Tircuit provides an extensive music library. He is available to play ceremonies and receptions, and provides intelligent lighting, professional equipment, lasers, foggers and more.
He works with couples to fill out a worksheet, followed with a consultation meeting, to determine the type of music to be played. However, Tircuit says he can literally play anything. neworleansdjselect.com
NOLA TOAST ENTERTAINMENT
Ang Garcia, operations manager and owner of NOLA Toast Entertainment, offers a rotation of eight to 12 DJs for weddings and receptions. Since opening in 2018, the company has performed at more than 500 weddings. “Our DJs have anywhere from four to 25 years of DJ experience,” Garcia says.
In addition to providing DJs, NOLA Toast Entertainment also offers the option to add a photo booth, or photography and videography services. “We train our staff to make your event the lifetime experience it should be,” Garcia says. “Our integrity, attitude, business ethic and delivery of our work is proof of our consistent five-star reviews.” toastnola.com b

Bring Your Brood
Romantic resorts that are also fun for the entire family
BY BECCA HENSLEY
You’d dreamed perhaps of some couple time alone. But, like the Brady Bunch, this second marriage, this new beginning for each of you and your respective, rollicking broods, marks a novel way to parent and a fresh way to repose. There’s just no way around it — you’re going to have to bring the whole family on your romantic date to a luxury location. Does this worry you? Do you resent it? Heavens no — you wouldn’t do it any other way. This is your new life — and you want to celebrate the hugeness of it — even if that means the biggest suite on property or seats on two whole rows on the airplane.
For all of you new marrieds with kids who are starting anew, we bring you a stellar list of romantic destinations, each one sure to achieve lovey-dovey-ness for couples in equal proportion to over the top fun for kids and the new family at large. Let the honeymoon (and the new memories) begin. You’ve got this.
INTO THE WILD
There’s no way the kids were going to let you go look at cheetahs and black rhinos in the Kalahari without them. While an African safari entails painstaking logistics (and a good travel agent) under any circumstance, South Africa’s Tswalu uniquely provides families with complete flexibility when it comes to their on site itinerary options. A place you can see animals not often found elsewhere, the lodge keeps things bespoke. Each suite, whether the two two-bedroom accommodations at Motse or the five bedroom option at Tarkuni, comes with its own private vehicle, guide and tracker. Staff welcome kids upon arrival with accoutrement-brimming backpacks, and entice them to activities from bow and arrow making to tracking practice. Besides cuddling during game drives in those sexy khaki outfits, couples can sneak away for alone time at the pool, for a private bush breakfast or for date night at peerless Klein Jan, a gastronomic restaurant amid
the wild. by South Africa’s first Michelin-starred chef Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen.
FRENCH KISS
Snow-loving honeymooners whose idea of romance is a glamorous ski scene inspired by a vintage James Bond movie, can embrace the chic ski haven of Le Coucou by Maisons Pariente, a gem in the French Alps. As parents practice choreographed s-turns down the slopes, luxuriate in the Tata Harper spa or sip apres ski Champagne by the fire, children, ages 4-15, can join entertaining guides in The Kids Club and Teen Lab to partake of activities that range from dog sledding to igloo building — not to mention ski lessons and the fun-filled Yeti Park, an outdoor playground on the mountain. For the whole family hot air ballooning over Courchevel, ski-joëring (skiing while being pulled by a horse), ice skating at the nearby Olympic rink and snowshoeing promise to build the new family bond.
74 WINTER/SPRING 2023 HONEYMOON
Ireland’s Dromoland Castle in County Clare
MEXICAN WELLNESS
An established hideaway on Mexico’s Riviera Nayarit, just a short drive from Puerto Vallarta, Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita occupies an eye-popping expanse of tropical terrain on the Pacific Ocean. With a breezy, yet opulent vibe and a commitment to immerse in local culture the resort has long been a pioneer in going beyond pampering to cater to the mind, body and spirit of its guests. While suites, decked out in local art, can accommodate smaller clans, a trio of new beach homes, set on their own corner of the retreat, stretch out grandly to hold larger crowds of honeymooning families. Children from 5-12 can partake of KidsWell, the FS Punta Mita’s groundbreaking children’s program with a focus on mindfulness, local culture and connectedness (think yoga, art therapy, interaction with animals and marine life, gratitude activities, cooking classes), while their parents indulge in classic five-star coddling at the spa, beneath beach cabanas, over long lunches and during activities from horseback riding to tequila tastings. Plan for all-family bonfires on the beach beneath the stars to cap idyllic days.
MONTANA MOMENTS
The Resort at Paws Up, family-owned itself, specializes in multigenerational holidays and unforgettable experiences that satisfy all ages. The seminal trailblazer of today’s glamping trend, this vast, 37,000-acre wilderness playground entices with a variety of accommodation options, from luxurious tents to multi-level cabin-like homes. Guests immerse into the bucolic surroundings via more than 50 activities. Fly fish, take trail rides, rise above Lewis and Clark’s terrain in hot air balloons rides, learn to paint, participate in a bonafide chuck wagon dinner and buzz through the sky in a helicopter. While the Kids Adventures option supplies gamechanging fun for kids, ages 3-12 (think: geocaching, swimming, archery and more), couples can launch their new life together with action-packed mornings, lazy afternoons at the spa and candlelit suppers a deux. Large families can book an entire tented luxury camp, camping butler and concierge included, or overtake a luxury Wilderness Home amid the pine trees — hot tub and ample deck part of the treat.
REGAL RETREAT
Bring your fairy tale to life with an all-family honeymoon at Ireland’s Dromoland Castle in County Clare. With towers, crenellated walls, storybook grounds, antique-filled rooms, crystal chandeliers, massive fireplaces and silk claret wallpaper, the opulent 16th-century castle, lords over 450-acres of emerald parkland. With the power to convey couples and their kids to legendary times, the resort guides wannabe royalty in bygone activities, such as the ancient art of falconry. An onsite genealogist supports those in search of information on their Irish roots, horses await riders, a small golf course beckons and resplendent afternoon teas, complete with clotted cream, sate appetites. Sign kids up for one of Dromoland’s Princess programs, which include treats that range from breakfast in bed to princess gowns, as well as age-appropriate spa treatments and Irish dance lessons.
SWISS SHANGRI LA
If all the charms of stunning Switzerland could be distilled into one place it would be Bürgenstock Resort, which crowns a mountain that rises from the banks of crystalline Lake Lucerne. Your newly combined family will love the novel arrival: a boat ride from the city, followed by a heartthumping, steep ascent to the top by funicular. Historic, but reimagined by new owners, the resort — a village-like medley of three hotels, a wellness center, 10 restaurants, a golf retreat, two spas and much more — evokes quintessential Swiss allure: beflowered meadows, endless cowbells, mountain trails, a shimmering lake, gracious staff, assiduous attention to detail, and, of course . . . cheese. While you and your beloved experience the tri-level spa, rife with saunas and punctuated by a cliff-hugging infinity pool, your children will be well minded in the fairy tale-themed kid’s

club, where tennis lessons, chocolate making classes and kids’ mocktail events rule the stay. A cinema for rainy days will delight the entire family.
FAR-FLUNG FUN
Nobody will argue that the Maldives isn’t a long way to go for a vacation. An archipelago in the Indian Ocean that consists of 1,200 variously sized islands that scatter across a huge expanse of sea, the destination promises a foray to the earth’s furthest corners and a marine wonderland. Check into Niyama Private Islands Maldives Resort and your household won’t regret a minute they spent on that plane. Touted as the most family friendly hideaway in the storied Maldives, the retreat comprises two islands (Chill for calmer stays and Play for wilder ones) connected by a footbridge. Found on Play, Explorer Kids Club keeps children occupied in gleeful bliss. Expect surfing (the best in the Maldives), cooking classes, pools, treasure hunts, dolphin spotting and games galore. Besotted newlyweds can canoodle in Subsix, an underwater restaurant, at Nest, a treehouse eatery or in the spa. Ideal for larger groups, the three-bedroom beach pool villa will envelop families in happy connection.
HULA HAVEN
Situated on Oahu’s less trammelled North Shore, Turtle Bay Resort, recently transformed and re-polished, sits beachside along five miles of riveting coastline. A secluded paradise, on Hawaii’s most famous island (but far from the madding crowd), it exudes every aspect of Hawaii’s storied paradisiacal mystique and magic. Perfectly positioned to spot humpback whales and monk seals and to capture kaleidoscopic sunsets, the hideaway has new Ocean Bungalows roomy enough for you and the kids. While newlyweds can nibble from a gourmet picnic basket, paddle a canoe over the waves, ride horses along the coastline and melt into the joys of couples treatments at the spa, their children can take surf lessons complete with surfing dogs, and go turtle spotting. Days end with the whole family in tow at a Paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) dinner, complete with fire-knife dances, hula lessons and a luau-style buffet dinner. b

Check It Twice
There’s
lot that goes into wedding planning, so don’t feel bad if you’re having a hard time keeping track of it all. Use our handy checklist to stay organized.
10-12 MONTHS TO GO
You’re engaged! Make sure you celebrate with your fiancé, friends and family.
Nail down the basics. Where are you getting married? Who’s paying for what? What is your budget? How many guests will be there?
Alert the wedding party. Decide who you want in your wedding party and ask them as soon as you can.
__ Pick the date. Check with your family members and wedding party before you make a final decision so there are no huge time conflicts.
Find a wedding planner. If you’re going to use a wedding planner, find one in the early stages. He or she will make all the craziness more manageable.
Book your ceremony and reception location. Where you get married will affect a lot of your planning decisions, so reserving a place should be at the top of your to-do list.
__ Insure your ring. Your engagement ring is special, but it’s also expensive. Make sure you get it insured, just in case.
Book officiant. Make sure your preferred officiant has your wedding date on the calendar.
Write thank you notes for engagement gifts. You will most likely receive a few gifts right after your engagement. Send a thank you note for each gift within three months of receiving it.
__ Take engagement photos. Book a session with a professional photographer so you have a few nice photos of you and your fiancé for save-the-dates, newspaper announcements and more. Some photographers will include an engagement shoot with a wedding package.
Pick your colors. Think about your wedding colors and the overall look of your day. Are you going for a classic look or trendy? Vintage or glamorous? Your color scheme will guide you through other big decisions, such as the bridesmaids’ dresses and the groomsmen’s ties.

a
CHECKLIST
MONTHS TO GO
Interview and select vendors. Make sure you book the “big ticket” items, such as the photographer, the caterer, the florist and the entertainment, early.
Send out save-the-dates. The typical rule on sending save-the-dates is six months before your wedding, but send them earlier if you’re inviting a lot of out-of-town guests so they can book flights.
Go dress shopping. You need an appointment at most wedding boutiques, so call a few of your favorite stores to set up a time.
__ Register. Register at two or three stores. Choose items at a variety of prices so everyone can find something they can afford. Add more gifts than you think you need so your friends and family have some options.
Think about the rehearsal dinner. It’s customary that the groom’s parents host the rehearsal dinner. Talk to your future in-laws about possibilities.
__ Schedule transportation. Book a limo, trolley or another form of transportation to shuttle your wedding party from the hotel to your ceremony location. Decide whether you need transportation for your guests to get from the reception to the hotel at the end of the reception.
Plan your honeymoon. If you’re going out of the country for your trip, make sure you and your fiancé have up-to-date passports.
__ Figure out your rentals. Rentals depend on the location of your wedding, but if you’re responsible for common rental items such as chairs and plates, make a list of everything you need and where you’re going to find each item.
Book a block of hotel rooms for out-of-town guests. If you’re not familiar with the hotel, ask a hotel representative to show you a room and don’t forget to inquire about a group rate.
Order bridesmaids’ dresses. If your bridesmaids live far away, give them plenty of time to buy their dresses and get them fitted.
4-5 MONTHS TO GO
Buy wedding bands. Shopping for wedding bands is usually less stressful than shopping for an engagement ring, but carve out a time when you and your fiancé can go look together.
Finalize the rehearsal dinner. Once you’ve decided on the location, book your rehearsal dinner.
__ Reserve a wedding night hotel room. Where are you staying for the wedding night? If you’re not leaving for your honeymoon immediately after the reception, decide where you want to stay for the night.
Get your dress fitted. Your wedding dress is one of the most important dresses you will wear in your life, so it should fit impeccably. Many brides plan up to three fittings.
__ Decide on attire for the groom and groomsmen. Talk to your fiancé about what he wants to wear and what will match your overall color scheme. Keep the time of day in mind when researching options.
Check in with your vendors. Make final decisions with your vendors and update them on new wedding information, such as when they should arrive.
__ Order your wedding cake. Taste a few cakes before you decide on your final choice. Talk to your fiancé about a groom’s cake if he wants one.
2-3 MONTHS TO GO
Mail out the invitations. Double check with the post office that you have enough postage. Many wedding invitations require more than one stamp.
Solidify the catering menu. Whether you’re doing heavy hors d’oeuvres or a sit-down meal, verify the final menu.
Schedule your hair and makeup team. Find a good hair stylist and makeup artist to help you and your bridesmaids get ready for the day.
ONE MONTH BEFORE
Send your wedding party an itinerary. Make sure your family and friends know where and when to be for the wedding day so everyone shows up at the right place at the right time.
__ Enjoy a facial. Everyone reacts differently to facials. If you’re planning on getting one, schedule it a few days before your wedding, or do a trial run months before.
Get your marriage license. Head to the Orleans Parish Marriage License Office in Benson Tower (1450 Poydras St., Suite 407) for your marriage certificate. The office is open Monday through Friday from 8:15 a.m. until 3:15 p.m. Visit ldh.la.gov for requirements.
Set up your second line. If you’re planning to second line at your wedding, you’re going to need a permit. Call the City of New Orleans One Stop Permits & Licenses at 658-7100 to schedule everything 15 to 20 days before your wedding day.
__ Practice your hair and makeup. It’s best to practice with your hair stylist and makeup artists ahead of time so there are no surprises on the big day. Plan your trial run for a day you want good hair, such as your bridal shower or bachelorette party.
__ Finalize the guest list. Send a final headcount to your caterer and any other vendor who needs the number.
ONE WEEK BEFORE
__ Double check with your vendors. Touch base with everyone one more time to remind them where to go and to answer any last-minute questions they might have.
Remind friends and family of their responsibilities. Assign duties to your wedding party or other loved ones. Who is the contact for the photographer? Who is making sure all guests get a favor?
__ Get a manicure and pedicure. This can be a great bonding experience with your bridesmaids, mom and future mother-in-law.
Put together a welcome package. If you have a lot of guests traveling for your wedding, ask the hotel if you can put a welcome basket or bag in their hotel room for when they arrive.
THE WEDDING DAY
Find a way to relax. Whether you go for a run or read a book in the morning, find a way to keep stress to a minimum.
Make sure you eat something. Brides always say, “I never had time to eat anything!” Give yourself some time during the reception to have a bite.
Have fun! You’ve made it through all the planning, now it’s time to celebrate. Enjoy your first day as a married woman. b
