Letter From The President
On behalf of your Gulf South LGBT Chamber of Commerce, it is my pleasure to serve as a volunteer Board Member and President. I am especially thankful for our hardworking Board and Committee Members who tirelessly volunteer their time to provide programming that fosters our Mission of promoting an inclusive business environment. Without our amazing Members, Corporate, and Community partners and Board Volunteers, our Mission would not be achieved. Thank you!
Since our founding in 2013 as an affiliate chamber of the National LGBT Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC), your Gulf South LGBT Chamber continues to serve as an integral partner in helping to grow LGBTQ-Owned businesses through NGLCC’s LGBTOwned Business Enterprise (LGBTBE) certification process, which gives our certified LGBTBE Members access to our local and national corporate supplier diversity procurement programs. We also have local partnerships with business organizations and corporate partners who seek to do business with our certified business members and utilize our membership directory to identify Allied businesses who support the LGBTQ+ community. Additionally, we provide unique LGBTQ+ and Ally professional networking opportunities, access to professional development and mentorship programs that include workshops and webinars, serve as a connector for employment opportunities and support local community non-profit partners.
As we continue to expand and diversify our outreach along the Gulf Coast, our Members, Corporate and Community partners who share in this Vision are critical to our success.
Sincerely, Michael Daly President, Gulf South LGBT Chamber of Commerce

"Together, we will make a difference."
LGBTQ+ Tourism & Representation in New Orleans
NEW ORLEANS HAS LONG BEEN CELEBRATED AS ONE OF THE GREATEST epicenters of culture in the Gulf South, where hearing a jazz tune float in through the open window is just as common as rounding the corner and ending up in the middle of a food festival. It’s a city of parades, music, cuisine, art, and celebration — but it’s much more than all that, too.
Most importantly, New Orleans is a place of self expression. The city’s culture is just as much experienced as it is shaped by the people who pass through its streets. The tapestry of interwoven voices and perspectives is constantly evolving, including the way the LGBTQ+ community lives, works, and plays in the city.
In 2017 and 2018, New Orleans was named the Second Most Welcoming City in the world by GayCities, while Southern Decadence earned the distinction of Best Weekend in 2019. The shift toward establishing New Orleans as an LGBTQ+ safe-haven in the south is part of a deliberate and ongoing messaging effort. That means embracing, celebrating and growing from our history — the good, the bad, and everything in between.
“New Orleans has always been a confluence of cultures coming together, and with that comes a forced recognition that we don't all look alike and act alike, but we all have common interests,” says Mark Romig, Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer at New
6
Orleans & Company. “It hasn’t always been easy, but we’ve always found a way to celebrate, and that’s become a sort of permission to express ourselves and to be supported in our expression.”
An established New Orleans figure in his own right, Romig has been one of the leading voices determining how the world perceives New Orleans, both in his current role and as the former President and CEO of New Orleans Tourism Marketing Corporation (NOTMC). Integral to that task is ensuring the LGBTQ+ community, of which Romig is also a part, is accurately represented.
One notable hurdle? Overcoming the belief that New Orleans starts and ends with Bourbon Street.
“We’re making sure audiences realize there are so many things you can do,” Romig says.
In collaboration with partners like Dustin Woehrmann, founder of marketing and branding agency Communify, local tourism officials have worked to expand public knowledge of what the city offers LGBTQ+ travelers, workers and entrepreneurs.
“One of the first things we did was have Dustin do an audit of our site to determine whether we were LGBTQ+ friendly,” Romig says. “The first thing he said is, ‘You’ve got too many rainbow flags.’ As a gay man, I thought I knew everything about gay travel. It spoke to the fact that we need to be cognizant of what people are looking for in a destination and that people see themselves in our messaging. Whether it’s a couple traveling alone, with children or a single visitor, they need to feel like they belong in New Orleans.”
And there are plenty of places to belong, as evidenced in NOTMC's "One Time in New Orleans" video series, featuring local drag queen Varla Jean Merman. Locals and travelers alike can find a wide range of activities to satisfy any hobbies

More than that, the LGBTQ+ community will find support and resources including BreakOUT! New Orleans (which seeks to end the criminalization of our youth) and SAGE New Orleans (providing advocacy for our elders).
Ongoing conversations about citywide messaging also led to the formation of the New Orleans LGBT Hospitality Alliance (NOLHA). This group of like-minded individuals is dedicated to growing LGBTQ+ rights and programming in the city, as well supporting and educating participating organizations.
All this, combined with the efforts of the Gulf South LGBT Chamber, has positioned our community for unprecedented levels of inclusivity and prosperity. There’s no shortage of opportunity here, and when you travel to New Orleans, you’re invited to create stories that go further than (but certainly include) the vibrant nightlife and festivities. You’re invited to create stories that reflect everything you are and everything you want to become.

Presented By The NGLCC
IT’S EASY TO LOOK AROUND AND SEE THE INFLUENCE of LGBTQ+ entrepreneurs, thinkers and artists on our collective culture, but how does our community impact the economy?
We know that signature LGBTQ+ events in New Orleans are significant boosters to tourism and hospitality. Ambush magazine reports that in 2019, Southern Decadence attracted 275,000 visitors with an estimated economic contribution of around $380 million. What has been less clear is the economic impact of LGBTQ-owned and operated businesses on everyday life and commerce, apart from tourism-driven attractions.
Thanks to a groundbreaking report by the National LGBT Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC), along with expert research conducted by Witeck Communications, we have our first snapshot of how our dollars contribute to economic prosperity in America. The report sets an analytical precedent that could eventually lead to a more regional understanding of how LGBTQ-owned and operated businesses stimulate their respective economies.
The NGLCC’s research included more than 900 LGBT Business Enterprises (LGBTBEs) to determine average revenue, geographical concentration, industry distribution and lifetime of NGLCC certified businesses, among other factors. The results demonstrate that talent from LGBTBEs is present in every major industry sector in the nation.
That means that almost any goods or services you might require can be performed by an LGBTBE, making your dollars — and where you spend them — your greatest tool in fostering an inclusive, diverse business climate.

Our Doors Are Open
Businesses show their dedication to inclusivity
WOULDN’T IT BE NICE if you could tell which businesses are fostering an inclusive, welcoming environment just by looking at their storefronts? The New Orleans LGBT Hospitality Alliance (NOLHA) launched the “Everyone’s Welcome Here” sticker campaign to accomplish just that.
Local businesses are invited to declare their establishments as safe spaces for LGBTQ+ (and ally) employees and patrons by taking NOLHA’s inclusivity pledge. Participating businesses receive a free welcoming sticker to display in their workplace, as more than 300 businesses have already done citywide.
Just look for the Everyone’s Welcome Here sticker to ensure the businesses you support are part of the movement to create a rich, diverse and welcoming culture.
Take the Pledge!
“Our LGBT-friendly business is committed to promoting an economically vibrant Greater New Orleans area, and we believe that we must have workplaces that are diverse and welcoming for all, including, but not limited to, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people.”
Watch for the updated, more inclusive version of the sticker, available now.
If your business is ready to join this no-cost initiative, visit neworleans.com/welcoming to take the pledge.

Empowering our Elders
What exactly are the disparities threatening the wellbeing of LGBTQ+ elders? A 2016 study conducted by The Williams Institute identified several critical issues that affect the aging LGBTQ+ community at a disproportionate rate to heterosexual individuals and couples.
LGBTQ+ elders are less likely to seek formal health care. Those who do receive care often conceal sexual orientation or gender identity due to fears of discrimination.
ADVOCACY FOR THE LGBTQ+ COMMUNITY shouldn’t only consider the prosperity of younger and future generations, and in New Orleans, it doesn’t.
SAGE New Orleans, also known as NOAGE, is a 501(c)3 nonprofit that provides critical support for LGBTQ+ elders in the Greater New Orleans area through community action and conversation.
Senior LGBTQ+ citizens often face disparities that are detrimental to their physical and mental health, in addition to affecting their social wellbeing. To address this need, SAGE New Orleans has enacted a community action plan that includes educational seminars, wellness workshops and socialization events, ultimately increasing awareness and competency of issues affecting the aging LGBTQ+ population.
For the mind, body and spirit, SAGE hosts weekly coffee talks and walking groups that promote self-care and interpersonal support. SAGEConnect links local elders with volunteers for weekly phone calls, helping to combat feelings of loneliness and depression that are often affiliated with decreased social engagement. The organization also hosts weekly support group for people over the age of 50 who are living with HIV.
Through the help of community sponsors and volunteers, SAGE New Orleans is meeting the unique challenges affecting LGBTQ+ elders with unique and proactive solutions, ensuring the dignity and welfare of all citizens.
To lend your support through a SAGE New Orleans membership, to volunteer, or to access a comprehensive resource list for LGBTQ+ elders, visit sageneworleans.org
Because LGBTQ+ elders might not have children or relatives, informal care options are often limited to “families of choice” or community organizations.
LGBTQ+ elders experience greater levels of financial risk due to discriminatory barriers keeping them from employment opportunities, as well as legal and social programs, over their lifetimes.
Experiences of victimization and stigma lead to worsened physical and mental health in LGBTQ+ elders, as compared to heterosexual counterparts. Furthermore, transgender elders experience heighted disability and depressive symptoms as compared to cisgender counterparts.

Raise your Flag
PFLAG’s mission to create a better society for LGBTQ+ people
SINCE 1982, PFLAG NEW ORLEANS has promoted the development of a respectful and equitable society for LGBTQ+ citizens and allies through support, advocacy and education.
As one of the city’s longest-standing organizations centered on LGBTQ+ rights, PFLAG has been a steadfast presence in supporting the LGBTQ+ community and their parents, families and friends. Bimonthly meetings enable open dialogue surrounding gender identity, sexual orientation, and other social obstacles that may adversely affect personal and professional development. These meetings also serve as a non-judgemental forum for loved ones to learn about recognizing and combatting discrimination.
PFLAG has provided sensitivity training to local corporations, schools, churches and organizations, including the New Orleans Police Department, and continues to offer training from
qualified representatives for any interested organizations. To ensure the advancement and protection of LGBTQ+ rights, PFLAG has testified numerous times before the state legislature and the Orleans Parish School Board. They continue to advocate for the incorporation of transgender rights, a demographic whose respect and dignity are often questioned and overlooked.
In addition to remaining a steadfast source of advocacy and information, PFLAG provides scholarships for both LGBTQ+ students and allies, granting up to $10,000 to eligible students. The Gulf South LGBT Chamber has been proud to support this initiative for the past two years. Applications are accepted between November and February each calendar year.

Getting Our History Out of the Closet
THE LGBT+ ARCHIVES Project of Louisiana was founded in 2014 by a group of dedicated individuals who sought to preserve the centuries-old history of the LGBTQ+ community in our state. While the Archives Project is not a formal repository on its own, it assists individuals in entrusting their treasures to various collections in New Orleans, as well as providing resources and funding for the digitization and archival of historical materials.
In collaboration with libraries, museums, and institutions like Tulane University and the Historic New Orleans Collection, the LGBT+ Archives Project has facilitated several major collections chronicling local queer history. Part of this effort includes an active oral history program conducted in partnership with T. Harry Williams Center for Oral History at Louisiana State University. Each segment details major events and personal stories told through interviews with community members, which are available in both audio and transcript forms.
A recent project saw the digitization of “Just for the Record,” a weekly public access television show which ran from 1987-1993. The show, produced by Valda Lewis and Loretta Mims, is regarded as one of the first LGBTQ+ television programs to air in New Orleans. When Lewis began looking for a home for “Just for the Record” footage, the LGBT+ Archives Project assisted her in donating the materials to the Amistad Research Center, which has made episodes available to the public on its Vimeo channel.
The Archives Project also serves to facilitate research involving the LGBTQ+ community in the state, be it for documentaries, films, writing, or other purposes. A complete bibliography of existing works can be found on their website.
Anyone wishing to donate materials is encouraged to reach out to the LGBT+ Archives Project, though the only items they can accept themselves are “ephemera” (traditionally disposable materials like menus, event posters, etc.)
Major collections will be matched with an institution of the donor’s choosing.
“It’s really important to preserve our history,” says Frank Perez, President of the LGBT+ Archives Project. “Our motto is ‘Get our history out of the closet,’ and that works literally and figuratively. People have a lot of things they might not think are important, but actually are. So before you throw anyone out, reach out to us.”

HR NOLA
How did you get started on your career path? I am a lifelong fan of Human Resources. After 20+ years in HR roles for various corporations, I opened HR NOLA in 2017 as an avenue to provide HR services to start-ups and small businesses in the area.
Tell us about your business. HR NOLA is a woman-owned, HR consulting business with offices in New Orleans and San Antonio. HR NOLA believes in celebrating our differences and making a positive impact on organizations across many industries.
What accomplishment(s) are you most proud of? This year, we’ve supported thousands of employees in over 15 different industries and in multiple states, with employment compliance and staff development, while trying to maintain our own business and personal health during a pandemic. I have never been more proud of my team!
How do you keep your job exciting? Every day is different, and every business situation in dealing with people is unique. Even situations that look similar on paper will be different in practice because our guidance is customized and helps businesses manage people efficiently. There is never a dull moment in HR.
What does being a member of the GSLGBT Chamber mean to you? Diverse businesses typically encounter barriers that challenge their startup and sustainability efforts, and having this Chamber's support and leadership helps with our growth opportunities. Not only does this benefit underrepresented businesses, but it also uplifts the communities where those businesses are located through developing business with job creation, increased wages and tax revenue. The economic impact and community support is significant!

DCAP Media, LLC
How did you get started on your career path? I pivoted into entrepreneurship after working as a digital producer and journalist for 10 years. In 2010, I incorporated as DCAP Media and took on client projects part-time until I was ready to run my business full-time in 2016.
Tell us about your business. At DCAP Media, our tagline is "Strategic Rebellion. Measurable Results." I only work on projects I am passionate about, where I truly care about helping my client-partners to thrive. Our service areas are digital strategy, audience development, strategic partnerships, virtual events consulting and production, and brand development. DCAP Media isn’t for everyone, and I like it that way.
What accomplishment(s) are you most proud of? I'm a Queer, non-binary, Latinx person running a successful business with clients nationwide. That’s something I celebrate, but what I am most proud of is my resiliency and the ways I help others. I budget to be a sustaining donor for local organizations including House of Tulip, a Black trans-led organization.
How do you keep your job exciting? I work across industries intentionally. I was told long ago that to be successful, I needed to have one lane. I do have one lane: DCAP Media, and we do whatever we want. But we have the same focus with every client: helping them thrive and scale during periods of transition, and supporting them in their evolving philanthropic goals.
What does being a member of the GSLGBT Chamber mean to you? It’s important to support LGBTQIA-led organizations. I'm also on the leadership council for the National Small Business Association, because businesses like ours help drive the economy, and I wanted to advocate on behalf of other business owners on Capitol Hill, which is one of my long term goals.

Your Promo Paradise
How did you get started on your career path? It all started as a young teenager when I began working for my dad at his printing company. Along with my siblings, I learned the business from the bottom up. I loved the promotional products side of business and saw the potential, so the desire to start my own promotional products company was always there. After over 30 years in the printing industry, the opportunity presented itself in the fall of 2013. Thus Your Promo Paradise was born.
Tell us about your business. At Your Promo Paradise, we enjoy making life easier for the busy executive by finding just the right products to achieve their goals. Be it an employee on-boarding package, holiday gift baskets, corporate apparel or special occasion items for distribution, we enjoy catering to their brand and making them look good. And, naturally, we provide full printing services such as catalogs, brochures, posters, banners and direct mail campaigns.
What accomplishment(s) are you most proud of? Making personal connections with my clients and truly getting to know them. That familiarity leads to understanding their needs and being able to recommend and deliver exactly what they want.
What does being a member of the GSLGBT Chamber mean to you? As an LGBTQ+ activist and member of the community, I always feel it’s important to stand up and be counted. I immediately became a member of the Chamber, and within six months of starting my business, became a certified LGBT Business Enterprise through the NGLCC. Being a member keeps me connected to other LGBTQ+ business owners, professionals and our allies.
