FUSION WITH A PERK Located at the point where Central and Park Avenues fuse together — and easily discernible by its amphibious water feature — Central Park Fusion Cuisine is the epitome of fusion style food and has quickly become a popular dining experience in downtown Hot Springs. Central Park Fusion is owned and operated by Matt Fuller. Fuller has been all over the world, and has taken bits and pieces of the cultures he has experienced to infuse his food with that very same concept. He attended culinary school that taught French cuisine and techniques. After he graduated culinary school, he became a private chef on yachts, where he got to travel and experience many places and learn the food of those places. It was there, throughout the Bahamas, Florida Keys, Baleric Islands off the southern coast of Spain, that he gathered the mélange of flavors that he brings to his food.

6

Fuller believes that people have an adventurous palate and want to taste food that is inspired by different countries, cultures and cuisines. He also believes that his food is better when it is the freshest it could possibly be and to purchase the best ingredients. “My philosophy is to purchase the best ingredients and prepare them in the best possible way,” said Fuller. When possible local produce, organics, free-range items, fresh seafood, and the finest quality products available will be incorporated into his many preparations. One of the attributing factors to the uniqueness of Central Park Fusion is their wine pairings. They expertly pair wine with all of their meals, providing you an exact compliment to your

dish, in the best possible way. They periodically host wine tastings and wine events. In addition to their wonderful wine selection, they are home to over one hundred twenty different types of whiskey, scotch, and bourbon. From the most common and recognizable, to some of the rarest whiskeys available in the US. Be sure to call ahead and reserve a table for you and your sweethear t for Valentine’s Day, or any other day of the week. Reservations are preferred due to the high traffic during this time of year. You can make reservations online at centralparkfusion.com or by calling 501623-0202.

MUSIC

CREOLE TO THE BEAT Zydeco: For people all over the world, it’s a word that conjures the images of rollicking dancers with beaming faces, the sounds of zipping washboards and the jovial chuckle of accordions. Once confined to rural, Creole communities in Louisiana, now the genre is enjoyed and performed by people of all cultures in all countries. This month Hot Springs National Park will get to join in the revelry with Dikki Du and the Zydeco Krewe. So what exactly is zydeco? Dikki explains, “You can’t compare it to anything. People ask before they hear the music, ‘Is it like blues? Is it like rock and roll? Is it like reggae?’ No, It’s like zydeco, it isn’t like anything else.” The word itself is widely believed to come from a Creole word for “snap bean,” and it is rooted in Creole

8

culture with some influence from Cajun culture as well. It is only recently that zydeco has spread from Louisiana to the rest of the nation as well as to other countries. “Years ago the music was played only in Louisiana. Three hours away in Texas, they didn’t know anything about zydeco, and now it’s all over the world. The music and culture is really spreading.” Although similar, it is distinct from Cajun music for its emphasis on rhythm rather than melody and its particularly energetic tone. It is a music made for dancing. “It’s happy music. It’s dance music,” says Dikki, “It’s good to see people dancing to the music. You can’t just listen to it and stand there. You’ve got to move.” With Dikki and his Krewe’s lineup of electric guitar, bass, drums,

Written by Ciara Cerrato Interview by Jim Miller

accordion, and washboard, there is no shortage of lively beats for the audience to move to. Dikki Du began playing zydeco when he was only nine, and the instrument he started with was the washboard, or the frottoir. He first played with his father, sister, and brother. Traditionally, zydeco is a family-oriented art and culture.“ [Zydeco] is a family, the whole family joins in the music.” For years Dikki performed in a group with his father in local gigs around Louisiana. Eventually he began playing with C.J. Chenier, zydeco legend and claimed creator of the genre as it is known today. His current group, Dikki Du and the Zydeco Krewe, have been touring since 1997. Dikki and his Krewe will be performing at Maxine’s on February 22nd where you can join in the experience of a little piece of Creole music, culture and joy right here in the valley of the vapors.

ALBUMS ON REVIEW Contribution Courtesy of & Written by Jeff Rodgers

MATT POND PA THE LIVES INSIDE THE LINES IN YOUR HAND

Matt Pond PA has been around for a while now. Dangling just low enough to stay out of mainstream ears. (I did hear them once in a Burger King last year, but wrote it off as a kickass manager’s doing, because I also heard Sonic Youth and The Pixies as well.) However, that is bound to be short lived with the success of all the acoustic indie bands mainstreaming lately. For right now, I’m just enjoying the truly honest and heartfelt writing that Mr. Matt Pond and Company have given us with The Lives Inside the Lines on Your Hand. Aside from the annoyingly long album title, this is a perfect follow-up to 2010’s The Dark Leaves, keeping in with the same formula of acoustics and strings. A few welcomed surprises by guest artists make it a must have for any Matt Pond PA fan.

HHHH

THE JOY FORMIDABLE WOLF’s law

I am instantly blown away with this band. Loud, distorting, shoe gazing sounds taken from My Bloody Valentine’s best works — with some new school, polished synths and a great recording mix — and you have Wolf’s Law. Amazing female-driven vocals and a heap of very mannered noise make The Joy Formidable a perfect recipe of how indie rock should be. Don’t be left out of the loop on these guys, and pick this up. I have a feeling they’re going to be sticking around for a while.

HHHH

BAD RELIGION TRUE NORTH

So, I’ll start off by saying, I’m a long time fan of Bad Religion. For the last 6 years, I have been sadly disappointed in the sounds of their latest works. I felt they just got too old and too experimental with trying to keep up with the sounds of today. That was until True North came out. Welcome back, Bad Religion of yesteryear. Picking up right where No Control left off, True North is packed full of everything Bad Religion is good at. From aggressive guitar hooks, to Brett’s on again, off again, perfectly scratching vocals and lightning fast drumming. There are a few songs I could do without, but for the most part it’s the best from this band in 20 years. These guys may be old, but they still have a ton of tricks to teach the new punk rockers of today.

HHHH ABOUT THE CONTRIBUTOR: Jeff Rodgers is a long-time native of Hot Springs. He has been an avid drummer for many local punk-rock bands. He is a professional photographer and graphic designer. The only thing he loves more than music is photography. Do you agree with our Reviews? Leave your feedback on our reviews at hshotspots.com. Submit your own Reviews! ARTS

HAVE A HEART FOR ART February is American Heart Month, and for the 5th Year, the Garland County chapter of the American Heart Association premiered the exhibit, “Have a HeART for Art,” during Hot Springs’ February Gallery Walk at Artchurch Studio and it will remain on display through February 22. The event is hosted to promote heart health to students, and is a fun and creative outlet for area youth to learn early lessons about heart disease and present original artwork to the community. 121 student entries from 21 Garland County Schools, as well as home-school students, are currently on display in the month-long exhibit. All art work must have a “heart” theme, and was judged by art professionals on creativity in five divisions and one “People’s Choice” award. New this year was a “Teacher’s Category,” in which teachers had an opportunity to submit

14

one of their own original art works. Winners were announced at the exhibit opening, adding an extra layer of excitement to the event, and those awards will remain on display throughout the month. The Grand Prize Winner was selected by guest judges, Bess Sanders, owner of Gallery Central, and Delores Justus, owner of Justus Fine Art. Grade Division judges were Chip Bartlett, Serethia Crawford, Jo Hornbeck, Tracy Keaton, Mary Latham, Christian Latham, Sarah Riley, Terri Seller, Monica Shults and Steve Trusty. “Have a HeART for Art” is an event created to honor the memory of Michelle Lee Bartlett, a 1998 honors graduate of Lakeside High School. Michelle was a second-year law student at the University of Arkansas School of Law in 2003, when she died suddenly at the age of 23 due to an undetected heart condition.

By Dan Anderson

Michelle’s parents, Nancy and David Bartlett, have sponsored the event since its creation in 2009, due to their daughter’s love for children and creating art. “One of the most surprising things is how interested the students are in learning about heart health. So many things we take for granted these young people are learning about and engaging in for the first time,” notes Nancy Bartlett, event organizer. “This has become our largest year and the response is overwhelming.” This year will also mark the first time the exhibit has been held at Artchurch Studio. “We are very excited to host the 5th Annual ‘Have a HeART for Art,’ it supports the mission of Artchurch Studio and is a great opportunity for young artists to present thier work,” reports Erin Holliday, Executive Director of Artchurch Studio.

MARDI GRAS

ALL THAT JAZZ By Hallie Fleck

THE TOPS WILL BE COMING OFF AT THIS MARDI GRAS PARTY, THE ROOFTOPS THAT IS… AND IT’S BECAUSE THE BANDS WILL SURELY BE GETTING DOWN The Hot Springs Jazz Society Krewe, in partnership with Arvest Bank and The Arkansas Arts Council, will be hosting The First Annual Mardi Gras Party “Dancing to the Beat on Orange Street” on February 9th. Attendees will enjoy a night of continuous music from three bands, two of which are local.

20

Opening the show will be Spa City Stompers. The Stompers are known for their traditional Dixieland type jazz and will without doubt get you in the Mardi Gras mood. Once the par ty gets going, you’ll be enjoying sounds from Sweet Mother, who have a more rockand-roll feel to their compositions. They have been brought back by popular demand from JazzFest 2012 and are known to keep the par ty rockin’ on with “classics and originals that you’ll think were hits all along.” Headlining the show, all the way from Dallas, Texas, is Zydeco Stingrays. Zydeco is identified as having a modern Louisiana style feel to its music. Zydeco Stingrays will keep you groovin’ the rest of the night through and will definitely put this Mardi Gras Par ty over the top. The emcee for the evening will be Magician Maxwell Blade, recognized master illusionist that “will amaze you with unbelievable illusions and unforgettable comedy.”

hot springs

The festivities will also include a Mardi Gras Costume Contest. Brad and Stacey Hudgens, the respective King and Queen of Mardi Gras will be nominating the potential winners. Contestants will be judged based on the creativity and originality of their costume ideas. Prizes for the Costume Contest are valued at $500. The party will also have a Mardi Gras Raffle. Tickets will be sold and winners will be drawn at the concert. Prizes for the raffle include goodie baskets filled with assorted wines, liquors, and specialty items. Cuisine will consist of Cajun food and barbeque. Beverages including beer and wine will also be available to attendees. No Mardi Gras Celebration is complete without the traditional Mardi Gras treat, King Cake. As tradition has it, inside one piece of the King Cake is a baby, and whoever receives the piece with the baby is known to have a fortune of good luck and is presented with a special reward. To put a new spin on a customary dessert, this party will have King Cupcakes. Four babies will be among the many cupcakes at the party, and those who are lucky enough to get the cupcakes with the babies inside, will

receive prizes that include beautiful jewelry from Adrianne Kahn Fine Jewelers. General Admission for “Dancing to the Beat on Orange Street” will be $20 for nonmembers, $10 for members. However, by special promotion, if you sign up the night of the party to become a Hot Springs Jazz Society member, your entrance to the concert will be free. On the dance floor table reservations can also be made. All proceeds will benefit The Hot Springs Jazz Society Krewe, a non-profit, volunteer organization established in 1991. Sponsors of the organization include Arkansas Arts Council, Hot Springs Advertising and Promotion Commission along with numerous other corporations and private individuals. Now in its 22nd year of operation, its contributions allow for programming such as their popular JazzFest, a week-long celebration of jazz music providing lectures, education seminars, and workshops culminating in a free outdoor concert that happens every year in September. In addition, The Hot Springs Jazz Society also funds scholarships for local area high school students to participate in the summer jazz camp at the University of Arkansas at Monticello. Students are selected for this program based on their

extraordinary musical performances, capabilities, and interests by their music instructors to further learn and enrich their musical abilities. The goal of The Hot Springs Jazz Society and their dedication lies in the perpetuation, preservation, and promotion of jazz music, an original American art form. “Our organization and jazz in general is looked upon as very exclusive. However, we are not that at all,” explained Gretchen Taylor, Executive Director of the jazz society who has been running the show for the last seven years. “Jazz, in all actuality, is part of all music genres of today, and was a predecessor to artists like Elvis Presley, who took his inspiration from sounds in blues and jazz. We want more people to realize that jazz is not only down home in its roots, but also incorporates songs that have recognizable lyrics, wonderful melodies, and above all, jazz is great for dancing.” To get your groove on, “Dancing to the Beat on Orange Street” will take place at the Old Field House at the old Hot Springs High School located at 228 Orange Street off Central Avenue in Hot Springs. PARTY OF ONE Introduction by Ciara Cerrato Story by Kory B. Oswald

ARE YOU SINGLE AND STRESSING OVER THIS UPCOMING VALENTINE’S DAY? RATHER THAN SPENDING THE HOLIDAY MOPING, OR WORSE, SCOURING YOUR FRIEND LIST FOR A LAST GASP DATE, TRY SOMETHING DIFFERENT THIS VALENTINE’S DAY: ENJOY IT. BETWEEN HITTING YOUR FAVORITE HIKING TRAIL AND HITTING YOUR FAVORITE BAR, BY YOURSELF OR WITH YOUR BUDDIES, YOU CAN TURN THIS SENSATIONALIZED DAY OF FORMULAIC DINNERS AND FLOWERS INTO FUN.

There is no such thing as love. It is nothing more than the over-simplification of a multitude of emotions. It is a natural human tendency to reduce complicated subjects into a user-friendly key word – just look at Apple computers – so, we lump all of these natural (and completely insane) sentiments and compulsions together and call it love. We have the capacity to make smartphones and crafts that canvas space, but when it comes to understanding relationships and the sea of emotion inside ourselves, we are as clueless as June Shannon at an art exhibit. At the basic level, love is a chemical reaction. Under an MRI, a brain in love registers the

same activity as a brain in the throes of drug addiction. Serotonin, Dopamine, and Norepinephrine are central to the obsessivecompulsive madness that Sophocles described as love. Serotonin is why we obsess; Dopamine is what triggers euphoria and addiction, and Norepinephrine is the reason for the mania that accompanies those butterflies in your belly. Norepinephrine has similar effects as adrenaline, though they are not the same thing. Sitting home on a Saturday night, contemplating your next witty status update is no way to live your life. Too many nights of this and you may convince yourself that leaving that “silly” status update on your current love interest’s profile is actually a good idea. The next thing you know, you’re blocked and back to square one.

Relationships are hard enough, and the upcoming holiday can potentially complicate them even more. Capitalism refuses to let the blood of Saint Valentine run cold. Hallmark and big box retailers fervently flog the carcass of Saint Valentine, and work consumers into a frenzy of spending and emotional superficiality. We are trained by our corporate masters from the cradle to honor our lovers with gifts of candy and romance. Otherwise, we are marked as churlish and heartless brutes.

Romantic, right? If you find yourself single this Valentine’s Day, awash in a sea of disgusting teddy bears, fat enducing chocolate gifts and bright bouquets of quickly perishable flora, just picture a bloody and bruised naked man getting his head cut off.

The contemporary outlook of Valentines Day is absurd when considering the story of the mar tyr it honors. The patron saint of lovers, young people and happy marriages was beaten then beheaded during the Middle Ages. Legend has it that he restored the sight of his jailer’s blind daughter before sending her a letter signed, “From your Valentine.”

Today’s singles may be alone by choice, or they might resemble Sloth with nothing to offer the opposite sex except a twitching ear. Regardless of the reason, and whether you’re male or female, there is a benefit to flying solo: there’s no pressure. You can spend your money on yourself and make the day about you, or do nothing at all.

The paradigm of blood and love surrounding Saint Valentine may explain the high divorce rates across the country. If anything, it highlights why some may hold the day in contempt.

Several magazines and websites dedicate space to single women and what they can do for themselves this V-day, but what about single men? Single guys look at V-day as just another Thursday. Many could care less, but if you are one of the few that do care, there are still plenty of things to do to make this two-dimensional holiday a memorable one. Here are a few ideas that eschew gender lines and can be co-opted by guys and girls alike:

Hearts aflutter – with adrenaline Studies show that men who are in love have lower levels of testosterone. Singles should embrace their inner manliness and seek out an adrenaline rush; the closest thing you can get to falling in love without the headache. The Zip Lines at Ouachita Bend can induce this rush. They offer an adventure by combining zipping with hiking on the weekends starting around 9 or 9:30 a.m. Grab your buddies (guys and girls alike), and make a day of it. Groups of up to 10 may travel the 7 line zip course together. Reservations are required, but check it out at ouachitabendadventures.com. If you want to continue the rush, February is a great time to start training for the 2013 Warrior Dash in Hot Springs on May 11. Find out all about this obstacle couse/mudrun and how to train for it at warriordash.com.

Love on the rocks If your idea of physical activity consists of lifting pints instead of dumbbells, or you just want to spend V-day numbing the pain of another long night alone – go ‘have a few’ at Maxine’s downtown. You can always make it a co-ed affair and invite all the singles you know. Just don’t be a jerk, if you indulge call a cab or designate a driver.

Better yet stay at home and have your friends (and friends of friends) come over. Make it more eventful by holding a Dirty Santa type gift exchange – of booze. Have each of your attendees bring a bottle of liquor. It can be something ‘good’ that will be worth the dirty brawl over, or a ‘novelty’ drink – aka, something bright and artificial that you probably drank in high school. Set up a line of shot glasses and have a blind taste test. You can make it more like a Secret Santa type gift exchange by drawing names or assigning numbers. That method might also help you keep track of what you’re drinking. Guessing the booze makes it even more enter taining. A couple of rounds into these games and you are likely to end up funneling a fifth of Pucker’s Sour Apple without a second thought to the brand, the holiday, or the ex that broke your hear t.

Love is for suckers That notion has been reinforced in the most beautiful ways by love-struck pop-icons like Jason Voorhees, Michael Myers, and Freddy Krueger. For the guys and gals that like gore, take a traditional approach to V-day and mix in some blood. Instead of spending the night watching trite romcom after romcom, rent a stack of horror movies and invite some friends over. Make yourself feel better about your singlehood by watching young lovers get what they deserve in the most violent ways. What better way to honor Saint Valentine? --Valentine’s Day has been distor ted from a day celebrating love to a day when men in relationships envy single men, and single women envy women in relationships. Regardless of your outlook on the holiday, being alone while others celebrate their relationship can take its toll. Don’t let it get you down this year, there are plenty of other things to do instead, like laundry.

LOVE YOUR PET By Brooke Balding

WE ALL KNOW FEBRUARY AS THE MONTH OF LOVE AND FOR MAKING OUR SWEETHEART FEEL LIKE THEY ARE THE ONLY PERSON IN YOUR WORLD. BUT, WHAT DO WE DO FOR THE ONLY

28

THING THAT LOVES US UNCONDITIONALLY — OUR PETS?

hot springs

February is not only the month of love, but it is Responsible Pet Owner month. If you have a pet, then it is your duty as a pet owner to take care of it responsibly. Being a pet owner is a life time choice, and if you cannot commit to the responsibility of taking care of a pet for the duration of his or her life, then do not make the commitment.

On February 20th, National “Love Your Pet Day,” be sure to show your pet extra love and get them one of their favorite toys, or a treat. Take your pet to their favorite park, or make an extra special play hour. They may not realize the holiday is upon us, but they will appreciate the extra love and attention, and who doesn’t love a new toy.

Being a responsible pet owner does not only entail keeping clean water and food out for your pet, and making sure they have a healthy diet. Though that is a large part of the responsibility, there are many other aspects of making sure your pet is taken care of properly.

Without your even realizing, your pet is doing so much for you, and your health. Studies show you will live a happier and longer life. So, why shoudln’t they? Pet owners are less likely to suffer from depression than those without pets. People with pets have lower blood pressure in stressful situations; playing with a pet can elevate levels of

Spaying and neutering your pets is one of the most impor tant things you can do to keep your pet happy and healthy. Making sure they are spayed and neutered insures that there are no more stray dogs, and does not contribute to the overpopulation problem. It also keeps your pet around more, and makes the chances of them running away considerably less. Keeping your pet up to date with shots and preventative disease treatments, such as heartworm treatments is another way to be a responsible pet owner. That helps lengthen the life of your pet by many years, and keep them around longer for you. Be sure to socialize your pet with other animals, and also other humans besides yourself. Hot Springs Bark Park (at the corner of Shady Grove Rd. and Hollywood Ave.), is an off-leash dog park where your four-legged friend can run free. Dog Parks offer a designated place to exercise and socialize your dogs safely. It is also a great plase to work on obedience training and behavioral problems you might have noted in your own home. Make sure your pet feels like he or she is an important part of your family and knows who their owner is. They will be more obedient if they feel wanted by you and if they know you are glad they are around. Their entire life is spent trying to love you, protect you, and make you happy.

serotonin and dopamine, which calm and relax. Pet owners have lower triglyceride and cholesterol levels (indicators of hear t disease) than those without pets. Hear t attack patients with pets survive longer than those without. A pet doesn’t have to be a dog or a cat. Even watching fish in an aquarium can help reduce muscle tension and pulse rate. The companionship of a pet can also ease loneliness, and some pets are a great stimulus for healthy exercise, which can substantially boost mood. Hold your pets dear to your heart, and make sure they know you love them because they are a very important part of your life. And, you are better for having each other.

ABSOLUTE ELEGANCE

SPICE IT UP YEAR ROUND By Brendee Marshall, Owner of Absolute Elegance Lingerie & Novelty Boutique

VALENTINE’S DAY IS ONE DAY A YEAR WHERE ONE EXPRESSES THEIR UNDYING LOVE FOR ANOTHER. BUT

38

WHY DO WE SHOW OUR LOVE ONLY ONE DAY A YEAR?

Every day should be Valentine’s Day. Every day is an opportunity to show or tell someone how much they are loved. We give or get a box of chocolates, a cuddly stuffed animal, flowers, lingerie, or dinner. Sometimes we get them all, but what about the other 364 days of the year? There are so many things we can do throughout the year to show someone how much we care and keep romance alive year round. Whether you are married with children or not, date night is so important because you have each others undivided attention for that time frame. We live such busy lives with everything we do such as working a job; taking care of family members, housework, homework, etc… you get the picture. We forget to take care of our own needs and the needs of our partner. Date night is time set aside for just the two of you and it doesn’t matter if you go out or stay at home and cuddle up in front of the television, it is still intimate time spent together. Once it is gone, you can never get back that time, so make every second count. Now there are lots of things to spice up a dull or non existent relationship. If you need a little help there are plenty of resources of information. Read a magazine or a book, or there are inexpensive coupon books that can be redeemed for fun little things like a massage, dinner, or sexual favors. Relationships often need some variation to keep it exciting and new and these sources are a great reference point, full of multitudes of ideas. It’s no fun if it’s boring, so fun it up. Sensual music is designed to get your motor running and I always suggest keeping a nice bottle of massage oil or lotion in reaching distance. I usually suggest oil that is not too feminine or too masculine so it can be used by or on either partner. I don’t know of any males that want to smell prissy, nor do females want to smell like a men’s locker room during or after a massage. Although, I suppose, if the massage is really, really good… the smell may not matter. And vibrators (massagers) are a must for every couple. They can buzz your cares away. Vibrators can relax tense tired muscles at the end of a long hard day.

And vibrators can definitely add an element of pleasure to any adult playtime. Of course there is always the sexy lingerie to spice up the boudoir. Some folks think of lingerie as a waste of time as it usually winds up on the floor but it builds anticipation much like getting a wrapped box for Christmas. The pretty presentation of the wrapped box (like lingerie) makes the present more exciting, therefore building the anticipation of what will be revealed inside. So think of sexy lingerie as gift wrapping! Now there is sexy gift wrapping or everyday brown paper wrapping, meaning the everyday lingerie made to sleep in or the sexy stuff that lands on the floor. Although if it makes you feel pretty or sexy, than you will be prettier or sexier. Lingerie makes for a more playful provocative mood. Also, there are massage oils and there are edible massage oils. Two different products designed to give a massage but when you make your lover tasty with edible oil, it’s a win-win situation. I often suggest choosing a flavor you both like so no one has to eat the whole bottle. So many of these products are just tools designed to enhance your love life, enrich and strengthen your relationship. Just like there is a big difference between buying a box of chocolates and feeding your partner chocolates one delectable bite after another or sharing each chocolate like Lady and the Tramp, lip to lip. Hey, even eating food can be sensual if done with passion and love in your eyes, heart and loins. It is the little things that you do for one another every single day that makes a relationship work. It can be something as simple as a cup of coffee served just the way you like it or a hot bubble bath drawn for you at the end of a long day. It can be a little note tucked away in a purse, pocket, or briefcase to tell someone how much you care. It can be an unexpected luncheon or a warm car on a cold winter’s day, the every day little things can make such a lasting impression on another. Why not try to make everyday as special as Valentine’s Day. Show someone you love them, every day!
