With its roots dug deep in the history of Hot Springs, the location of Andrews restaurant has always been on the map. The location has been an old bookie joint, massage parlor, speakeasy, and a brothel. WIth those rough days behind it, it now plays host to delicious Cajun cuisine. The historical location overlooks bathhouse row, and is the only restaurant with this view on the strip and still has betting windows from the bookie days. Andrew spent over a year remodeling the building to get it in tip-top shape for customers.
food. “Cajun is fusion,” explained Winifred. “You have your African influence in the gumbo, and Spanish influence in things, such as jambalaya.”
Chef Andrew began his love for food when he was twelve years old and began cooking with his father, who was a chef for over forty years. He then met Winifred, who learned to bake and obtained her love for food, from her grandmother. The two returned to her home town of New Orleans for culinary school. They learned all about the cultural influences of Cajun
After spending many years in the downtown historic district of Hot Springs, they saw the need for a good restaurant within walking distance of the heart of downtown. They have a wide variety of food, and all of it prepared well. “I would tell someone that wants to have some good food to come see us, and someone
Learning to cook in the heart of Cajun cuisine, they learned that the key to making great Cajun food is the fresh ingredients. “Everything we make is fresh. Our seafood is straight off of the boat and our meat is from the butcher,” said Winifred. “Nothing is from a can or bottle.”
that isn’t used to Cajun food that it doesn’t always mean spicy,” said Winifred. They also offer items such as steaks, burgers and po’boys. In addition to great food and service, they go a little further and give every table of guests a plate of beignets for dessert. You can also enjoy a few of their signature drinks including side cars, stingers, absenth: the green fairy drink, hurricanes, Nola mojos, and their special Sangria gri gri. The walls are adorned in local art and those with a window seat have an amazing view to look at during dinner. “Chef Andrew has a love of great food and an open and warm personality that carries over into everything he prepares.”

MUSIC
INDUSTRIAL INCEPTION The very definition of industrial rock can be heard in the sounds of The Vail. Their suspensive electronic sounds, mixed with their uniquely hawkish guitar, captivating lyrics and highly developed drum beats make them a group to definitely be heard. The Vail was founded in 2004 by Devin Castle. Castle learned to play the drums at age five and from then his love of music began to grow. When he was ten years old, he learned to play guitar. “I pretty much started doing all of that because there was no one around in Arkansas to play with at that age, no one took music that serious at that young of an age,” said Castle. At twelve, he learned
8
to play keyboard and began singing, and at thirteen he began to play bass. “When I was eleven I did my first demo with a band called ‘Homeland.’ I played drums on the demo. They were all in their twenties,” said Castle. When Castle started writing music for this project, he was involved in numerous other projects so it wasn’t started with the immediate intention to play his music. “I was in like four bands at one time, and none of it was really what I wanted to do,” said Castle. “So I started writing my own stuff and just did it for fun, and then eventually put a band together and just started doing it.” In late 2010, The Vail released their first EP, Collecting Pieces on iTunes. Collecting Pieces is
full of songs about life, pain, and heartache. Each song has been carefully composed and written by Castle. The Vail carries a guitar, played by Josh Ford, a bass, played by Matt Osborn, drums, played by Trey Lambreth and Keyboard and lead vocals, played by Devin Castle. Since conception, The Vail has found themselves playing larger shows alongside bands such as Rob Zombie, Godsmack, Seether, Lacuna Coil, the Dillinger Escape Plan, Hell Yeah, Kill Hannah, Egypt Central, Future Leaders of the World, Allyria, Janus, and many more. Find out more about the band, including shows, videos and where to buy the album, by visiting their Facebook page at facebook. com/thevailmusic. Keep on the look-out for show postings for late January in Arkansas and surrounding areas.

ALBUMS ON REVIEW Contribution Courtesy of & Written by Jeff Rodgers
TEGAN AND SARA HEARTTHROB
First of all, I had to ask the publication here if it was permissible to curse when writing this review. Tons of four letter words with very descriptive adjectives raced through my mind. Don’t get me wrong. I’m a big fan of Tegan and Sara and was very excited to hear of the newest release on Warner Bros Records. This, however, has to be the biggest disaappointment to my ears since Metallica’s Black album. Tegan and Sara have always had a bit of experimental urges and love to throw in the dance-ish pop tunes to shake up an otherwise indie rock guitar/ vocal driven sound. Heartthrob is all pop. This will make some new fans, I’m sure, but anyone expecting the classic Tegan and Sara stylings will be sorely disappointed. I won’t be surprised at all to see a Tegan and Sara/Katy Perry tour this year.

THE EVENS THE ODDS
Ok, so I was destined to like this before I even put on the earphones... Led by punk rock legend, Ian MacKaye (Fugazi, Minor Threat) and his wife, Amy Farina (The Warmers), The Evens have released their third full-length on no other than Dischord Records. Acoustic in nature, but punk rock nonetheless. This album has a ton of punch with the gruff voice of Mr. MacKaye and a guitar template set by early Fugazi. The drums are rich and full with a tinge of early garage days tone. The songs are moody and almost have a riot starting melody to them. This isn’t leaving my playlist for a very long time.
DROPKICK MURPHYS SIGNED AND SEALED IN BLOOD
Who wouldn’t like a little Irish lullaby thrown in with some steel toe punk rock? Dropkick Murphys are at it again with their latest album on Born & Bred Records. Pure energetic, bar room brawling rock and roll. Infused with a whole ensemble of Celtic instrumentation (accordians, fiddles, bagpipes, and mandolins), polishing off this release and making it one of the best and more heartfelt Dropkick Murphys albums to date. Swig the whiskey and throw up a fist, because this is how it’s done in Boston.

do several replica guitars for Gibson and displayed them at Gibson. From then, the Hard Rock Café group saw his work and commissioned him to do several pieces for their establishments.
Much like BB King’s Lucille, Wayne Summerhill found his calling in art after his exit from the Vietnam War. Summerhill was a member of the Apache Aero Scouts in Vietnam and received several medals from the war including distinguished flying crosses and an infantry combat badge, and left the military as a sergeant.
Summerhill moved to Hot Springs from Memphis, TN in 2005 and has displayed his work in the Blue Moon Gallery is downtown Hot Springs for around thirteen years.
Summerhill was commissioned to do work by Hard Rock Café and was flown to Orlando, FL to meet Jimmy Paige as inspiration to produce a piece titled ‘Stairway to Heaven’.
“I have a lot of musician friends in Memphis, and they kind of challenged me and said ‘Man, why don’t you try to build a guitar?’,” said Summerhill. “The first one I did was when Gibson started manufacturing the BB King Lucille guitar, so I did a replica of it.” He had a friend who worked for Gibson and wanted to take the replica to work and show his coworkers. He was then commissioned to
Once he finished the commissioned pieces, he started to do musical pieces that meant something to him. He did a memorial piece for Johnny Cash, a piece dedicated to Elvis Presley, and another piece dedicated to Dwight Yoakum.
“I just took a different perspective after I got back and got interested in art and then I painted for like ten years and it wasn’t gratifying. So, that’s when I started doing three dimensional works,” said Summerhill. He began metal work in 1973. He does the texture with a hammer and

CLEAN EATING
DIVINE DIET By Kory B. Oswald
A HEALTHY BODY PROVIDES THE GENESIS FOR A SOUND MIND, WHICH IS ONE REASON MANY PEOPLE ARE SWITCHING TO A CLEAN EATING DIET THAT REQUIRES FOOD IN ITS
18
PUREST FORM; THE WAY NATURE INTENDED.
hot springs
If cleanliness is next to godliness, chances are your colon has sprouted seven heads and 10 horns by now. That is to say, the modern American diet is not as healthy as it once was, or should be. The average person only absorbs around 10 percent of nutrients from the food they eat because our bodies are incapable of fully digesting the large amounts of processed foods, meat and dairy we consume, according to some colon enthusiasts. Somewhat broken down, but not completely beaten, pieces of that food can stick around and dirty up our insides. Subsequently, the wheels of our digestive tracts become clogged and squeaky, which can lead to a spectrum of health problems ranging from constipation to cancer. That’s right, the soul of that McCrap sandwich you ate for lunch every day in high school is possibly still haunting the halls of your innards like the ghost of Jacob Marley. With the New Year comes a myriad of resolutions, and eating healthy food is one of the most popular, according to usa.gov. There are other
ways to clean out your insides, but changing your diet isn’t as intrusive as a colon cleanse, or as taxing and time consuming as exercising. A healthy diet is an easy impetus to good health. This is where “clean eating” comes in. Although the diet has been around for a few years, a refreshing moniker like “clean eating” puts a new spin on the premise of eating fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein as opposed to refined, pre-packaged, processed, and fast foods. Clean eating is essentially about consuming food as close to its natural state as possible, according to Clean Eating magazine. The diet also replaces saturated fats with healthy fats, and substitutes calorie counting with faith in top quality food. “The unprocessed side of things is definitely a growing market. Every day it seems like people are becoming aware of what they’re eating,” says John Gardner, owner of Good Earth Natural foods.
Gardner’s store has offered a variety of dietary supplements, as well as healthy and organic foods in Hot Springs for almost 15 years. Most of the health problems associated with the typical American diets come from a fiber deficiency, Gardner says. Clean eating is rife with fiber and nutrition, which your body needs in order to exorcise the incubus of that corndog you ate in the 10th grade. “Most processed foods do not offer any fiber or nutrition whatsoever. You’re supposed to get 35 grams of fiber a day, and most of us get five to seven in the American diet,” he said. There are plenty of online resources that can guide you through developing a clean eating diet. Livestrong.com is a one-stop shop for a healthy life with the latest information on all health trends.
19
CLEAN EATING
STEP 1 Eat
plenty of fruits and vegetables. Choose fresh, unprocessed foods over canned or processed products. Clean eating enthusiasts believe that we were meant to survive on fresh fruits and vegetables and that processing them reduces their nutritional value and fiber content and adds salt, fat, sugar and chemicals. Choose fruit instead of fruit juice and if you must pick a processed vegetable, frozen is always better than canned.
STEP 2 Balance
protein and complex carbohydrates. Incorporate whole grains like brown rice or millet over processed grains. Eat lean meats, and choose organic or grass fed meats when possible, as these foods are usually clean of pesticides, hormones and additives. Grill, broil, or steam your meats instead of frying.
STEP 4 Trade bad fats for good fats. One of the
Whole grain literally refers to the entire grain including the bran, germ and endosperm. Wheat is the prom-queen of the grain world in the United States. The entire wheat grain is ground up to make 100 percent whole grain wheat flour. For “refined” flours – like white and enriched wheat flour – only part of the grain is used. Refined flours are missing many of the nutrients because only the starchy part, not the whole grain, is used, according to the American Diabetes Association (ADA) website.
STEP 5 Eat several small meals to keep blood
Best choices of whole grain, from the ADA website diabetes.org. Finding whole grain foods can be a challenge. Some foods only contain a small amount of whole grain but claim it contains whole grain. For cereals and grains, read the ingredient list and look for the following sources of whole grains as the first ingredient:
There are many avenues available when pursuing better health, like colon cleanses, fasting, exercise, and even meditation. Some say the road to good health begins in the same place as the digestion process: the mouth, because what you put in your body determines what you get out of it. However, the key to better eating and, subsequently better health, may actually start with our eyes.
Bulgur (cracked wheat) Whole wheat flour Whole oats/oatmeal Whole grain corn/corn meal Popcorn Brown rice Whole rye Whole grain barley
Wild rice Buckwheat Buckwheat flour Triticale Millet Quinoa Sorghum
STEP 3 Avoid sodas and high calorie, sugary drinks. Follow the tenant of clean eating that aims to remove added sugars from the diet. Choose water or tea for your beverages, or juice your own fruits and vegetables and enjoy them without added sugars or preservatives.
20
This is because there are many health risks associated with consuming large amounts of soda, but consider the most obvious. There is around 150 calories in a can of regular soda, and it provides zero nutrients for the body (it has the same amount of carbohydrates as 10 teaspoons of sugar). Just one soda a day can equal more than 36,500 calories a year. By the most conservative estimates, that is roughly 10 empty pounds of weight gained annually.
“I would recommend drinking plenty of water and staying away from carbonation. Stay away from the sodas and the caffeine,” Gardner said.
most important aspects of clean eating is removing saturated fats from the diet. Lower your saturated fat intake by avoiding fast food, choosing lean cuts of meat and getting your fat calories from foods like nuts and fatty fish.
sugar stable and to avoid overeating. Choose snacks like nuts, low-fat or fat free dairy and fruits and vegetables. Note that some people who live a clean eating lifestyle don’t eat dairy products while others adapt clean eating to a vegetarian lifestyle. “Reading labels is the number one goal, to see what is actually in the item. You have to be a smarter consumer than what you used to be. Just to get away from … anything that you don’t want in you’re body that is adulterated,” Gardner suggests. Good Ear th Natural Foods is located at 3955 Central Avenue. ON THE PONIES — THERE ARE OWNERS AND TRAINERS INVESTED BEHIND THE SCENES THAT HAVE IT ALL ON THE LINE.
At Oaklawn Racing and Gaming, not only will you enjoy their exciting promotions with over $20 million dollars in purses available, but this year you can see a group of horses vie for the title of Champion that have been trained right here in our home state. January 11th begins the opening weekend at Oaklawn. Although their Arkansas famous fifty cent corned beef sandwiches will be plentiful, one thing that won’t be are horses that came from here in the natural state. Blaine Williams, owner/breeder/trainer at Blaine Williams Racing Stables in Hot Springs, AR, is training the home-bred horses that you can see run this year, horses that were trained right in our own back yard with names such as “TheArkansan” and “MowinDownTheRoses.” The horses are housed at their training facility located just outside of Hot Springs, and they also occupy four stalls at Oaklawn itself. Their training facility boasts an indoor and outdoor track, as well as an indoor swimming pool, and services including thouroughbred training and horse breaking.

When he began training on his own a year and a half ago, he actually had over twenty years in the business already,” she explained. “Even though this is Blaine’s second season training alone, in the year and a half that we have been officially open we have already accumulated seventeen horses, fifteen of which we hope to have racing in the upcoming 2013 season,” Jennifer continued, “And seven of them running are new. We also received the ‘Stable of the Week Award’ last year.” Arkansas breeder/trainers like Blaine are very rare these days as most of the horses that run at Oaklawn are from other par ts of the country. “We are different because we’re local,” Jennifer began, “Our horses are trained right here in Hot Springs, and Blaine’s techniques and hands-on experience makes our business especially unique and sets us apar t from other trainers.” You can see the horses from Blaine Williams Racing Stables star ting Friday, January 11th through Saturday, April 13th, 2013.

ENTERTAINING AT HOME
Initially, one might think “Hey! I want to have all of my bros over and crack open a couple of brewskies from the comfor t of my recliner.” Or, maybe this is an oppor tunity to create a new Pinterest board, and enter tain a group of your closest friends decked out in fan gear with over-the-top ideas, decor and mouthwatering dishes. If this is you, here are a few ideas that might help you make the most of your party experience in the comfort of your own home.
1
A best dressed prize may even be in order for the overzealous fan who paints his/her entire torso in team colors, or a worst dressed for the party pooper who wears nothing team oriented.
2 Have football trivia for halftime. If the halftime show isn’t the most looked forward to part of the game for you, and you wish you could get more football during this inconvenient break, then take some time the day before and prepare a football trivia game. Have a prize for the winners of the trivia.
3
Tail-gate party food. YES! If you aren’t into the traditional pigs-in-a-blanket, or chips and cheese dip, then spice it up a bit. Add a can of chili to that bland cheese dip, or go for something completely different. Make breakfast or have a Mexican food buffet.
4 Unique cocktails & drink ideas are another way to make your party stand out. Choose beers that are brewed in the same state as the competing teams, or create a themed cocktail with colors or flavors to help get your fandemonium across.
JOIN THE CROWD
If the home theater experience isn’t for you, or your wife said no to hosting you and ten of your closest smelly man friends, then you can venture to the closest spor ts-ready establishment to watch the big game. Order a large pizza, a big plate of wings, or some of the following hot spots’ well-known specialties. Order your table a pitcher of beer and get ready to enjoy the game. Always remember to be respectful of your wait staff, and drink responsibly. If your team loses and you want to drown your sorrows in the bottle of Jack, make sure you have a responsible par ty driving.

TIPS TO A TREND READY NEW YEAR By Brooke Balding
EVERYTHING YOU CAN EVER WANT TO KNOW ABOUT DRESSING YOUR BEST IN 2013 CAN BE DESCRIBED IN THREE WORDS — COLOR, GLITZ, AND ACCESSORIES

Outfit available at Madison’s Closet, 126 Central Ave.
Everything in the world is changing quickly, and that includes fashion. Trends come and go, and things that were once in (like shoulder pads for example) made a swift exit once it was dead and gone. The thing that has stayed consistent throughout the history of fashion is that people are all different and have different personalities. Be you when you choose your clothes and don’t dress for anyone else but yourself. Whatever you want to wear, go for it. Here is my plan to have you looking snazzy to star t the 2013 New Year.

Color
The age-old adage “don’t be afraid of color’ has never been truer than it is now. Play with colors, experiment with patterns, and don’t fear the bold. As we have seen recently, the colored jeggings have been in for a little while, but they will still be roaring into the New Year. Everything bright and cheery on bottom is what you should reach for. Navy blue and orange will be two colors that you do not want to miss out on. Navy blue is a color that everyone can wear due to the fact that it is a color much like black and can be worn at all times, and for all occasions.
Glitz
Everything in stores now has some sor t of sparkle or glitter on it. If that isn’t your thing, I would urge you to just try it. You would be very surprised. Sequined sweaters, glitter tops, and even boots with sequins on them are definitely the way to go. If you’re not really feeling a top full of sequins, star t small with maybe a shoe or a boot. A word of caution, once you fall in love with the sparkles and fun do not overdo it. You could turn into a walking disco ball before you know it, and this isn’t the era of disco, so I’m not really sure how that could turn out for you.

Accessories
These are the most impor tant additions to your outfit and add the final touches that pull everything together. The right necklace and earring pair can take your outfit from ‘Oh, that’s cute,’ to ‘Where did you get that? I want everything on your body right now. STAT!’ For the cold weather months, I advise wearing a scarf with everything. There are about nine billion and two different ways to wear a scarf, and you can look online for tutorials to show you the infinite ways to wear yours. Grab a few in good neutral colors like black, white, brown, and navy. Then rock it! Once you get used to wearing a scarf, you can branch out into patterns like plaid, houndstooth, stripes, polka dots, and pretty much anything you could dream of. Some other things that you might be on the look out for are flowy tops that are comfor table and not huggy. The days of tight clothes are slowly dying and the new reign of clothes that look cute and comfor table are rising. Button up tops that have a long tail are super great to wear with leggings or even jeggings. Also, the Peter Pan collar tops are absolutely adorable and look great on a lot of people. They’re a little higher necked, but the line of the collar adds a bit of interest right around your face. Some staples to have are a wide variety of camisoles, two good pair of jeans, and black heels. A camisole can save your life in a sticky situation and adds that extra level of comfor t and security. (Also, if you spill something on your over shir t, you can take it off and grab another top easily and you’re all set.) Keep two pair of jeans because you need one pair for casual wear and another for dressier occasions. The dressier jean should be just a tiny bit longer so you can wear a heel with them. Lastly, black heels are a must. You can wear a six inch pump if you want or a one inch kitten heel. It doesn’t matter. Having a pair of heels makes every girl feel a little bit prettier.
