MUSIC
SOUTHERN SWAMPY SOUL The bearded, guitar toting musician, Adam Faucett has been filling the air with music for the last twenty years, and continues to do so. Drawing comparisons from Townes Van Zandt to Tim Buckley to Otis Redding, Arkansas born and bred Adam Faucett is most known for his powerful, almost operatic voice and intricate finger-picking. Hailing from Benton, Faucett began learning about music from horror movies and playing with his grandma’s organ. “When I was a kid, what I wanted to do was make horror movies,” said Faucett. “I would make a drone on the chord keys and just fiddle around and find stuff that sounded good.” “The early 90’s was a good time to be a little kid that was into music, and there was a lot of inspiration back then,” said Faucett. It was around that time that he found his
10
grandpa’s old guitar, and began to learn on it. In high school, he never had an actual band, but he had many friends that tried to learn instruments to play with him. “It seems like I have made a life-long career of trying to make musicians out of my friends, so I’ve never really had a band,” said Faucett, “but I’ve definitely had a group of friends that tried to clonk it out with me.” His career has been mostly solo. Gaining inspiration from traveling, and the world around him, Faucett is always writing songs and coming up with inspiration. “Here recently, I wrote a song about an early twentieth century psychic, Edward Casey, and it goes to your regular soul song about drinking during
the day,” said Faucett. Inspiration for Faucett can be found anywhere, and music can be made about anything. “Anything said the right way is a good lyric,” said Faucett. Faucett recently dropped a music video directed by Frank Donangelo to his song “Blood is Blood” off of his album ‘More like a Temple’. “I would describe my music as ‘Southern, Swampy, Soul’, because it mentions Arkansas, it’s slow and slushy, and it is soulful music that just comes from the gut,” said Faucett. You can find more information about Adam Faucett and his music and access the new music video at adamfaucett.com.

ALBUMS ON REVIEW Contribution Courtesy of & Written by Jeff Rodgers
The Winter Sounds Runner
Newly signed with New Grandada, the Winter Sounds have put together yet another amazing album that few will hear. One of the hardest working bands, from Nashville, Tennessee, has finally hit a pay-off with Runner. Not near as dark as the name suggests, the Winter Sounds have simply taken their sound – which hasn’t changed significantly since The Land of No Output – and given it a bit of an upgrade. The melodies are warmer and richer, the shimmering bits are lighter and impressive. The musical eqivalent of shifting from film to high-def. The live shows have a bit more flavor and aggression, but for those of you that don’t think indie rock has any new tricks to offer... give this a try.
Runner is available for preorder now at New Granada’s online store and officially releases November 27th.

PINBACK INFORMATION RETRIEVED
Ok, I’ll just say it... Information Retrieved is the best album of the year. Neither too relaxing, nor too subtle, Pinback’s longawaited fifth release – their first album in five years since 2007’s Autumn of the Seraphs – has an almost hushed restraint, making for a gorgeous listen. Paved with beautiful harmonies and hypnotic guitar progressions, Information Retrieved is Pinback at its best. In a time where older, classic indie bands are coming back for round 2 and historically providing disappointment, Pinback delivers exactly what you wanted and a little more. This is Pinback 2.0.

DIAMOND RINGS FREE DIMENSIONAL
I’m not even sure where to start with this band... The music? The clothes? The Style? Upon the first listen you can’t help it but to laugh a little. Is this for real? Then it hits you like a rainbow colored lightning bolt... This. Is. Amazing. Free Dimensional is a blend of everything great about the 80’s, coupled with laser-beamo indie bands from today. I had the privilege of seeing the Diamond Rings open for The Stars in Little Rock a few weeks ago and was instantly blown away. The glitter, sequined clothes, laser beams and in-your-face presence of the band surprised me for sure – and, had everyone dancing in no time. The sound might not be for everyone, but 3 appletinis later, this could be your favorite band.
HHH ABOUT THE CONTRIBUTOR: Jeff Rodgers is a long-time native of Hot Springs. He has been an avid drummer for many local punk-rock bands. He is a professional photographer and graphic designer. The only thing he loves more than music is photography. Do you agree with our Reviews? Leave your feedback on our reviews at hshotspots.com. Submit your own Reviews! A church is often known as a building that is used for fellowship. It is often easily recognizable by stained glass and high ceilings. When one enters a church, a feeling of calmness and happiness is often overwhelming. That is how the visitors of Artchurch Studio feel when they enter this repurposed church building. Historically, a church is designed as a place for fellowship, usually based on religion, but by definition fellowship is a sharing of mutual interests.

A large part of fall programming at Artchurch is the event ‘Handmade for the Holidays’ where you can find very unique and beautiful handmade gifts to give during the holiday season. “Handmade for the Holidays is not your typical craft fair, it really seems to be more art based,” said Holliday.
The vendors that par ticipate are, a lot of times, just as excited as the people that come. A lot of people come looking for specific ar tists, and once they find an ar tist they like, they continue to search for them year after year. The other par ticipating ar tists also take this as an oppor tunity to seek out other ar t, and to trade and buy gifts for their family and friends also. “The vendors don’t look at it as much like work, but they look forward to seeing the other ar tists that they have come to know,” said Holliday. Artchurch Studio hosts monthly art exhibits that highlight emerging artists. Currently, the

FROM MARTHA TO MAYHEM: YOUR OWN FLAVOR ADDED Family holidays are always difficult. Knowing that you have to rush around and get everything together and impress the people in your family, be it big or small, is always taxing on the psyche. Thanksgiving is a time for togetherness and thankfulness, but knowing what kind of holiday you are going to have will help you fully prepare.
THE D.I.Y.’R
If you are a member of the Pinterest population, then Thanksgiving will be a fun holiday for you. You can look forward to a week’s worth – or more – of pre-holiday preparation. Martha Stewart move over, she won’t hold a candle to everything you think you can do. Homemade napkin rings, paper maché turkey name cards for each place setting on your table, and a plethora of sweets (that one does not know, for sure, exactly what they are) will adorn your Thanksgiving dinner table. Your homemade mod podge might still be out when guests begin to arrive, so whatever you do, do not let it get mixed up with the tea or lemonade. A final touch for you might be a cornucopia centerpiece for your table made of soft corrugated cardboard with itchy craft store paper shred as stuffing. Filling your cornucopia may be a whole month’s worth of decision-making and planning in and of itself. No matter what you do, you must frame and matte the definition of Thanksgiving written on a piece of brown paper. The brown paper bag you get from the liquor store will do nicely, since you’ll have to make that white wine and gin punch you saw on Pinterest. Because everything on there is good.
A Hipster HOLIDAY
If you are a part of the very significant part of the general populous that claims to be a hipster, then you are very apathetic to the idea of Thanksgiving, due to the mainstream-ness of it all. Something that might help you prepare, is to take a last minute trip to the Salvation Army, and find your new dinner service and a new ironic work shirt to wear the day of the event. Your dishes might be circa 1999, but they’re ‘so vintage’ and only cost $5 for the lot. The set was originally a service of twelve, but only eight of the plates are still intact, they have ironic swirls and flowers and are a pale shade of green. Sure, it’s the green one might associate with stomach bile, but it is vintage. Be sure to stock up on your Pabst Blue Ribbon. Due to the fact that it is $10 for a 120 pack, you should be fine. You can add beer to anything, so be sure to add a couple cans of that PBR into your turkey, dressing, sweet potatoes, and pumpkin pie. Who likes mainstream and traditional food for Thanksgiving, anyways? Make it less mainstream, and have some coffee and hot tea. In order to assure its hipster qualities, make sure it is obscure coffee, and have peppermint, raspberry, orange, or green tea.
KILL & EAT
Since you will likely be coming in from a turkey hunt the day of Thanksgiving, your festivity preparation might be a bit rushed. Hopefully, you will have already picked the vegetables out of your garden, and soaked and washed your turnip greens. All you (or your lucky spouse) will have left to do is de-feather your giant bird with the arrow in it. As the 17 bottles of oil you put into your extra large fry daddy heats up, you have time to make sure the turkey is all ready to stick into the creator of all that is fried and crispy. You should make sure that the arrow you shot it with is removed, or use it for lifting the turkey to and from the hotness – we know you’re tough, but burns are an uncomfor table addition to the dinner table. To add to the rugged nature of your Thanksgiving, it would be appropriate to use your skinning knife as dinnerware. And, be sure to wear your camouflage overalls to dinner proudly, even if they have blood on them. You earned that, and the right to flaunt the success of the kill, and to tell your story a minimum of six times. You must begin with, “well, there I was…”, or it doesn’t count as a hunting story.

HOLIDAY FEATURE
Obnoxious Fan-damly
Even though you are superbly normal, and you have never had an objectionable quality about yourself in all of the years of your life, your family can be described in one word: obnoxious. Your parents are semi-normal (since they raised you) but the family members that travel to their house... they are the epitome of the word obnoxious. Your cousins demand the center of attention 98% of the time, and the 2% they aren’t demanding the attention is when they’re on a bathroom break, or in a food coma. Your uncle thinks he is supremely funny, so he tells jokes that have no point other than to make you look at him with the most curious look on your face you can muster. Your aunt just tells stories about how all of the people at her work love her so much, and how she is so smart. Beware though, it is almost time for them to start grilling you about everything from your work successes (or failures) to your personal life. Therefore it is best to remain in the shadows, and play with the children. Your grandma is the same adorable lady yelling across the room because she can’t hear herself, or anything you say to her, but her turkey and dressing is as delicious as it ever was. And, last but not least, there’s the xchromosome population of your Thanksgiving soire. The men who epitomize the Al Bundy stereotype and scarf down every last morsel and crumb on their plates, just to retire to the couch... one hand strategically placed inside the waistband and eyes glued to football, screaming just enough to prohibit all thoughts and reason. Ahh, the sounds of Thanksgiving.

Black Friday Frenzy Feeders
Everyone is familiar with the black Friday tradition popularized by greedy Americans; hungry for the lowest prices for the cheap junk they want to give to the people they’re obligated to give gifts. These people are not amateurs, and have had years of practice with this form of battle. They are well versed in the art of store gorilla-warfare, shelf climbing, and elbow dropping. In order to properly prepare to stay awake during the prime sleeping hours, these people begin their Thanksgiving festivities early, so they can end them early. Lunch begins around 11 a.m., and the family festivities are over by 5 p.m. when the possé goes to bed. Immersing themselves in a 6 hour long food coma, and awakening around 11 p.m. to go onward and fight the good fight.
Hippy VEGANESS
The picnic blanket is set, and the grass is dry and hasn’t been mowed in a long time. The tofu is cooked, and the raw veggies are cut up and served nicely on a piece of wood cut off of a tree. The lake water has been distilled on the campfire, and the flower halos have been tied together. Everyone gets there, in their earth tone clothing, toting knitted bags, and not wearing any shoes. Once a round of tunes have been sung, and the guitar has been put away, it is time to hold hands around the fire and each say what you are thankful for. Do this until you feel like you have been appropriately thankful to the flower goddess, or until the tiedye is done setting.

RECIPE BOX
AND, FOR THOSE OF OUR READERS THAT STILL WISH TO INVOKE THE MARTHA SPIRIT, HERE’s SOME OF OUR FAVORITE HOLIDAY DISHES FOR YOUR RECIPE STASH.
GRANDMERE’s Turkey Stuffing Recipe
Makes 8-10 servings.
1 loaf of day old French bread, cut into 3/4-inch cubes (10-12 cups) 1 cup walnuts 2 cups each, chopped onion & celery 6 Tbsp butter 1 green apple, peeled, cored, chopped 3/4 cup of currants or raisins
5 to 10 chopped green olives (martini olives, the ones with the pimento) Stock from the turkey giblets (1-2 cups) (Can substitute chicken stock) 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley 1 teaspoon poultry seasoning or ground sage Salt and freshly ground pepper
Take the turkey giblets - heart and gizzard - and neck (if you choose) and put them in a small saucepan, cover with water and add a little salt. Bring to a simmer; simmer for about an hour, uncovered. Strain the stock into a container for use with the stuffing. Toast the walnuts by heating them in a frying pan on medium high heat for a few minutes, stirring until they are slightly browned. Let them cool while you are toasting the bread, then roughly chop them. Heat a large sauté pan on medium heat. Melt 3 Tbsp butter in the pan, add the bread cubes, and stir to coat the bread pieces with the melted butter. Then let them toast; only turn them when they have become a little browned on a side. If you aren’t working with somewhat dried-out day-old bread, lay the cubes of bread in a baking pan and put them in a hot oven for 10 minutes to dry them out first. Sauté chopped onions and celery on medium high heat with the remaining 3 Tbsp butter until cooked through, about 5-10 minutes. Add the bread. Add cooked chopped walnuts. Add chopped green apple, currants, raisins, olives, parsley. Add one cup of the stock from cooking the turkey giblets or chicken stock (enough to keep the stuffing moist while you are cooking it). Add sage, poultry seasoning, salt & pepper (to taste). Cover. Turn heat to low. Cook for an hour or until the apples are cooked through. Check every ten minutes or so and add water or stock as needed while cooking to keep the stuffing moist and keep it from sticking to the bottom of the pan.
APPLE CRANBERRY CURRANT CRUMBLE PIE
ASPARAGUS TOMATO SALAD Makes 4-6 servings.
1 lb. asparagus Pint cherry tomatoes, quartered 1/2 cup green onions, chopped 3 Tbsp capers 2 cloves minced garlic 3 Tbsp fresh lemon juice 1 1/2 Tbsp red wine vinegar Kosher salt Pepper Blanch asparagus for 3 minutes. Add immediately to cold water. Cut into bite-size pieces and mix with all remaining ingredients.
Makes 10-12 servings.
1/4 cup brandy 1/4 cup dried currants 1 1/2 cups fresh or thawed frozen cranberries, rinsed and drained 1 cup granulated sugar 6 Tbsp plus 1 cup of all-purpose flour 1 Tbsp finely grated orange zest 3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon nutmeg 1/4 teaspoon salt 6 cups sliced peeled Granny Smith apples (about 2 1/4 pounds) 10-inch pie pastry for a single-crust pie 2/3 cup firmly packed brown sugar 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, cut into chunks
Combine the brandy and the currants in a small bowl. Let sit for at least an hour, until currants are plump. Preheat oven to 375°F. In a large bowl mix 1 cup white sugar with 6 Tbsp flour, orange zest, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Use a slotted spoon to transfer currants from brandy (reserve the brandy) to the sugar mixture. Add cranberries and apples and mix well. Pour filling into unbaked pie pastry and drizzle with the reserved brandy. In another bowl mix 1 cup flour with 2/3 cup of brown sugar. Add the butter and cut in with a pastry blender or rub with your fingers until the mixture forms small lumps. Sprinkle topping over the filling. Set pie in a foil-lined 10x15 inch baking pan (to catch the juices). Bake on bottom rack until juices bubble, 55 to 65 minutes. If pie browns too quickly, cover loosely with foil. Set pie on rack, uncovered, to cool for 2 to 3 hours.

Running is a great way to get exercise, and to become physically fit. There are many ways to get started in running, but a lot of times, people find it is difficult to stick with it. In Hot Springs, there are many ways to begin, but few really know about them. The Spa Pacers are an association of people that have dedicated their spare time to running, and involving others of the Hot Springs area in running. The Spa Pacers have weekly group runs multiple times per week, and sponsor a ‘Women Can Run’ Group. They teach lessons on how to begin running, and they sponsor the Spa 10K/5K.
Coats for Families drive. They will also have a squirt race for children that begins at 9:45 a.m.

GETTING STARTED
Running can help you sculpt your body, and get rid of extra stress. If you want to start running or walking and aren’t able to join a group like Spa Pacers, then here are a few tips to help you get going.
1
Start off slow. Three times a week, you should alternate between running and walking. Walk for six minutes, and then jog for one minute.
2 Start speeding up a little bit. Walk for five minutes, and then jog for two minutes. This will help your body get accustomed to the gradual increase.
3
Don’t give up. Continue to do this every week until you’re only walking one minute for every nine minutes of jogging.
4
Make sure your shoes fit your feet well, and that you have enough support for your feet and ankles.
5
Always do a warm up and a cool down. This helps get your muscles warmed up so you can avoid tearing them, or making them more sore than necessary. The cool down is necessary to help your heart rate gradually slow down, rather than an abrupt stop in activity. Doing these things can help you slowly get started, and be able to fully begin running and eventually working up to joining Hot Springs at a 5K or a 10K.
