Honoring the Life and Legacy of

Evangelist

Alfreida Delores Wynne

Her Genesis 

Alfreida Delores Revis was born on March 3, 1933, during the Depression, to the union of James Robert Revis and Nathalee Roland-Revis, in Birmingham, Alabama. Freida, as she was affectionately called, was a smart and gifted child from the beginning. A go-getter who excelled in everything she sought to accomplish. Even as a child, she earned the nickname “Big Speechmaker” for her courageously captivating oratorical skills. She attended Hudson Elementary School, A.H. graduated from Parker High School in 1949 (2 months after her 16th birthday), attended Miles College (HBCU), Tailoring School, Wayne County Community College, Wayne State University (first Early Childhood Development cohort), and C.H. Mason Bible Institute School of Ministry. Alfreida was a highly respected scholar throughout every phase of her educational journey.

The Loves of her Life 

On December 21, 1951, she married her first and only love, John W. Wynne, of Greensboro, Alabama. Soon after they said I do, he was drafted into the Korean war. They wrote to one another every day for two years. Despite the distance, their love thrived and they formed an unbreakable bond that was rooted in Christ. The Lord blessed them with four equally amazing children: Vanessa Delores, Adriena Gail, Jonathan Maurice, and Gracene Karen. They built a beautiful life together that withstood the test of time, married 58 years, until John’s transition in 2010. Frieda and John knew the value of family. They used their resources wisely, vacationed as a family, and afforded their children opportunities to participate in many extra-curricular activities (in and outside of church). Aside from that, Alfreida was wise beyond her years and had many gifts, talents and abilities in which her family and friends reaped the benefits; seamstress, fitness coach, pianist, culinary guru and counselor. She kept her children (and grandchildren) dressed in the most up-to-date high quality clothing made by her own loving hands. She’d see a design in a store or magazine then go home and make something even more exquisite. The family fitness coach, working out with her children to TV fitness instructor Jack LaLane. And anyone who had the privilege of stopping by during a holiday knew Alfreida’s culinary skills were second to none. Cakes, pies and bread pudding that made you want to “bite your finger”. Not to mention her top secret recipe for Southern Sweet Iced Tea! But the tea paled in comparison to her sweetness. She exemplified the fruit of the Spirit in and outside of her home. She was patient, kind, loving, compassionate, and never mean. She was an advocate if you were right and a disciplinarian if you were wrong. But she was so much more. She was her children’s primary teacher, an excellent home maker, compassionate mother, grandmother and aunt to all and often included neighborhood children in family activities without making exceptions. She was phenomenal! 4|

Her Career

Hailing from a family with a strong work ethic and a spirit of entrepreneurship, Alfreida had a rich and varied work history. She honed her skills of persuasion in Birmingham, AL, as a life insurance agent; Put her sewing skills to use as a tailor for a local clothing store, shared her love for education as a teacher at Gracilla Heights Kindergarten where she left an indelible positive impact on the children, staff and parents. Following in her father’s footsteps, Alfreida started a Powderly Hills branch of Social Cleaners in which she offered pick up and delivery dry cleaning services. But when the opportunity presented itself, she followed her passion, becoming founder and lead teacher of Powderly Hills Kindergarten, in Birmingham, Alabama. However, the family moved to Detroit in 1964 where she temporarily tapped back into her gift for sales as an exemplary Sarah Coventry Jewelry Representative. Finally, she made her way back to her passion as a Head Teacher for Franklin Wright Settlement Pre-School where she remained until her medical disability retirement in 1977.

Her Civil Rights and Service 

Alfreida was a community servant cut from the same cloth as her father, the honorable James Revis, Sr. She and her husband, John Wynne, were proud active members of the Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights, a legendary civil rights organization founded by Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth. The church and the Revis home were among the many homes and buildings bombed as payback for standing up against racial injustice. Her social and racial stance didn’t end in Alabama. In Detroit, she organized the Yosemite Block Club, empowering the community to work together in creating a safe place for children and families to live and play. Activism and civil rights was more than a part of her rich history, it was a part of her everyday life. Remembering the many injustices she, her family and countless others endured simply because of the color of their skin, she faithfully volunteered for many years as an election day worker, encouraging others to pair their outrage with positive action by exercising their right to vote.

Her Church

Alfreida received the gift of salvation and was baptized when she was very young at Bethel Baptist Church, where her father was one of the founders and faithful trustees. She also attended her mother’s church, St. Luke A.M.E., which helped solidify her understanding that God could not be limited to one place or a certain people. She later attended Bryant Chapel A.M.E. Church with her husband and children in the Powderly Hills community of Birmingham, Alabama. However, as relatively new residents in Detroit, Michigan, the family quickly sought a pure place of worship and joined New Grace Missionary Baptist Church, under Rev. W.D. McClung, who was succeeded by the late Rev. Dr. Julius Caesar Hope. For a brief time, she served at Burnette Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. J. Allen Caldwell. Finally, in 1998 She became a member of New St. Paul Tabernacle Church Of God In Christ where she faithfully served under the direction and leadership of Bishop P. A. Brooks. Her consistent message was, God is not a denominational God. He is the one and only true and living God of all.

Her Heart for Service

Growing up with a piano in the dining room area of her parent’s home, Alfreida learned to play well enough to perform for various churches and in many programs. She was a prolific youth ministry leader, training children and youth to deliver speeches, sing solos, and act in dramatic presentations. She served as a powerful Sunday School teacher, sharing the Word with skill and enthusiasm. As a young lady she served as President of her church’s missionary board, applying her profound leadership skills and compassion for people who are hurting, she empowered others to minister at a higher level. Although she had strong verbal and musical skills, her passion for service allowed her to serve with love as an usher, rendering a warm friendly face while maintaining order in the house of God. But, instrumental music and singing have always been a very distinct part of the family heritage. Alfreida consistently served as a choir member no matter what church she attended. She felt blessed to have sung under the direction of incredible and anointed gospel legends like Rev. James Cleveland’s Gospel Music Workshop of America, Donald Vails, George West, James Bishop, Emory Lee, Arthur Fowler, and Pastor Rudolph Stanfield, Jr. just to name a few. Her voice was a gift in which she loved to share.

Her Faith for Miracles

Always supporting her husband, Alfreida served faithfully with the Deacons Wives Ministry of New St. Paul Tabernacle. Her fervent prayers and devotional life led her to be assigned a March of Faith Television Broadcast Prayer Counselor for Bishop P.A. Brooks. She was an anointed intercessory prayer warrior, known for her international healing and miracles ministry. Hundreds and likely thousands of people were healed, delivered and set free through her anointed prayers in person or over the phone. Her faith in miracles was strong because of the miracles she experienced in her own life, including being healed from diphtheria, surviving being ejected through a windshield during a horrific car crash and surviving a 2-month hospitalization that included being in a coma for days. Those experiences impacted her healing ministry, causing her to fervently pray for others and see the manifestation of her prayers. Countless people were miraculously healed from colostomies, blindness, crippling disabilities and numerous other situations. She knew there was nothing too large or too small for God to do. So her prayers weren’t limited to physical conditions. Her heart and faith caused her to see prisoners as hurting people in need of redemption and encouragement, so she worked in New St Paul Tabernacle’s Prison Ministries serving in half-way houses, jails and prisons in the Detroit area. She prayed, had faith that God would perform what she asked and people were indeed set free, healed, delivered and experienced the peace of God.

Her Mighty Calling

Of all the ministries in which she served, her appointment as Bereavement Coordinator was a calling. When her pastor, Bishop P. A. Brooks asked her to serve bereaved families, she was truly honored. Anyone that knows her knows she took all things to God in prayer. This was no different, she sought the Lord for direction, as her heart's desire was to be pleasing to Him. God gave her a step by 6|

step systematic blueprint for every aspect of what became known as a dynamic Bereavement Ministry. God’s instructions amazed her. She was able to skillfully guide and minister to families from the moment a loved one transitioned, through the homegoing service and beyond. She listened, counseled, consulted, referred, and advised families during one of the most difficult times in their lives. She recruited, trained, developed and mentored a team of selfless servers to make sure the service the ministry provided was elite, complete, effective and full of compassion. She loved comforting those in need and pointing them to Jesus...A Soul-Winner for Christ. Leading us to her next calling, Alfreida D. Revis Wynne was a true Evangelist! Evangelism was embedded in her DNA, not something in which she tried to do, Evangelism was an integral part of who she was, intertwined into every fiber of her being. She was an Evangelist. “Are you saved?” she would ask.“Are you filled with the Holy Ghost?”.“Let me tell you what God has done for me?”... Her prayers, passion for Christ and evangelism lead hundreds, if not thousands, to salvation. She didn’t need to be in a church setting or at an official church function. She was always looking and waiting for an opportunity to share the Good News. Countless people were saved and filled with the Holy Spirit right in her home; repair persons, telemarketers, neighbors, family, and friends alike all heard about the goodness of the Lord through her lips. Her light shone so bright that it was often offensive. But that didn’t deter her, becauses she knew her light was also liberating. She loved God, loved His people, wanted to see everyone live out their God-reason for living and was never too busy to assist. She lived her God purpose for living rendering a great reward and an undeniably blessed legacy.
