“I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, From whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the LORD, Which made heaven and earth.” Psalm 121:1-2
Edythe Kay Moore was born on February 18, 1943, in Detroit, MI to the union of Lemuel and Dorothy Austin, who preceded her in death. She was the fourth of six children, her bothers Lemuel Jr. and George, and her sisters Doris and Janice, who preceded her in death, and one remaining sister Patricia.
Edythe was raised in Detroit and would always remind us that she was from the “North End.” Edythe came from a musical family, and on occasion Jackie Wilson and Smokey Robinson would drop by her house and sing along with her family. And one of her greatest singing memories, was singing at New Bethel Baptist Church with the Reverend James Cleveland.
Edythe was educated in the Detroit Public Schools and graduated at the age of 16 from Northern High School. While in high school, she participated in sports and played on the school's basketball team as a point guard. She furthered her education and graduated as a Medical Technician. Her love for helping people helped to shape her career choices. She worked for Intro Marketing Company, The Fox Theater as an usher, and at Sears Roebuck where she was a top salesperson. She eventually went on to start her own business which she named, “Weddings of Distinction”, where she provided services for everything from the “engagement” to the “honeymoon”.
Edythe’s life centered around God. She gave her life to the Lord at the young age of 15. Her father, Elder Lemuel Austin Sr., was the founder and pastor of The Whole Truth Church of God in Christ located on the east side of Detroit. She remembered him telling her… “daughter, I'll preach to save adults, and you work to save the youth by living the life of Christ”, and that is exactly what she did, eventually becoming the church Youth Mother.
It was at Whole Truth where she met the love of her life James E. V. Moore, when his family started attending the church. They were married on October 21, 1961. To this union three wonderful children were born, Cheryl Lynn, James Jr., and John. In 1990, she became a licensed foster care mother and has cared for over 23 children including her special sons, which she affectionately called “her boys”, DeJuan (DJ) Reeder, Roosevelt Dean, Armond Staten and James Gangley.
Missionary Moore dedicated her life to Kingdom work, and in 1995 she became a licensed Missionary in the Church of God in Christ. She has traveled as far as Jamaica to do mission work in the foreign field, sharing the love and gospel of Jesus Christ. Missionary Moore has worked in various capacities on the Local, District and State level in the Church of God in Christ such as, singing in the State Choir, she served as secretary of the State Youth Department, and worked in the State Women’s Department on the Women’s Day Workshop Committee. Missionary Moore was also appointed by Bishop P. A. Brooks as a State Adjutant Sister in Northeast Michigan Jurisdiction.
In 1994 her late husband, Elder James Moore, was appointed as pastor of Walker Memorial Church of God in Christ, (after the demise of then pastor, Elder Louis Andrews). Missionary Moore excelled as First Lady. She served as director of the Women’s Department, President of the Missionary Circle, member of the Executive and Trustee Boards, and founder of “Kiddie Kingdom” Nursery. She was gifted in time management skills and had organized and conducted many leadership conferences and have written many bible studies and workshop manuals. She had a pursuit of excellence in her field of ministry, mainly mentoring and teaching “life Skills” to women. She would frequently counsel them giving them “sound” advice, Godly directions, words of encouragement and inspiration. She had a down to earth approach to ministry and a special compassion for people. She encouraged them by telling them “If you trust God for one thing, trust Him for all.”
Missionary Edythe Kay Moore leaves to cherish her memory, her children: Cheryl (Gregory) Springer, James Jr., and her “baby boy” John, one sister: Patricia (Cecil) Lockhard, grandchildren: Candice (Demetrius) McCall, Stephanie (Luis) Way, Christopher Moore, Danielle Springer, Taylor Knoles, Taylor Moore, John Moore Jr., granddaughter/ niece: DeAnne Austin, great grandchildren: Donovan McCall, Sahara Springer, Layla McCall. “Her boys”: Dejuan Reeder, Roosevelt Dean, Armond Staten, James Gangley, goddaughters: Carmella Bailey, Teresa Davenport, Julia Whitley, her BFF: David Jackson, and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends including members of the Whole Truth Church of God in Christ and Water of Life Fellowship Church of God in Christ.
