FIRST DIVISION GRAND FINAL PREVIEWS Saturday 22nd August

After fifteen rounds and two weeks of intense finals football, four sides remain standing with the opportunity to become Champions in 1st Division 1st Grade and 1st Division 2nd Grade for 2015. Minor Premiers Goulburn will feature in both grades, taking on Hall in 1st Grade and Yass in 2nd Grade for the right to hold aloft their respective grades cups.

1st Division 1st grade: Goulburn Dirty Red (1) v Hall Bushrangers (2) Goulburn will be competing in their fourth consecutive 1st grade Grand Final and will be looking to secure their third title in those four years. The Dirty Reds, have competed for the major prize since 2012, having won it in 2012 and 2014. Season 2015 for Goulburn has been be perfect thus far winning 16 from 16 and at present remain undefeated since the start of the 2014 season. The Goulburn 1st Grade team have a number of 2015 Monaro representative players and players that have been a part of the clubs recent success. These players will be very valuable in such a big game for the club. Boyd Newby and Mik Webber have not only led from the front on the field, but have led the team off the field being both Coach and Assistant Coach. Having both players on the park is a massive advantage for the Dirty Reds. Hall on the other hand will be riding the success of their championship winning second grade team from 2014 and be out to continue a successful period of time for the club. The Bushrangers know they will have their work cut out for them, taking on such a dominant and classy outfit, but that won’t bother them. Hall and Goulburn over the past few years have had some very exciting, physical and hard fought matches and this is scoping up to be no different. With players of such quality like Joel Williams, Josh Peck and Josh Munro, Hall will be a force to reckon with and will certainly test Goulburn around the park. Of the four times these two clubs have clashed, Goulburn have been the superior side, but in the first two encounter only a combine total of 7 points were the difference, before two games in which Goulburn were far superior winning comfortably. With so much on the line for the clubs, this game could come down to the wire.

1st Division 1st grade: Goulburn Dirty Red (1) v Yass Rams (2) Goulburn will be out to go one better in 2015 after falling at the final game against Hall in 2014, to finish runners up and losing their first game of that year. 2015 like their 1st grade side has be perfect, having not lost a game, finishing the season 16 points of nears rival and opponents Yass. Defensive efforts have been the main message sent by Goulburn throughout the season, as they leaked only 98 competition points averaging less than a try a game. Going off this average it will be rather difficult for Yass to cross the line, but in the Major Semi Final, the Rams proved Goulburn can be pushed and scored against, losing 36-31. Yass continue to improve in 2nd grade, after last year making the finals, but not excelling to the Grand Final. Seeing the events that took place last year in which Hall upset Goulburn, Yass will be aware that they can do the same. In saying that, Goulburn will be out to ensure that doesn’t happen again. Of the times these two have played Goulburn were far too good in the earlier matches, but of the later matches, Yass have found their form and have tested Goulburn. Like 1st Grade this encounter will be very entertaining and could be very high scoring.

SOUTH COAST MONARO – 2nd DIVISION GRAND FINAL PREVIEWS Saturday 22nd August

In the inaugural year of the combined South Coast Monaro – 2nd Division this competition has provided both Monaro and South Coast zones with some new competition and also more to play for with the inclusion of both a cup and plate final series. After 15 rounds, only 4 side remain, all from Monaro zone, with South Coast side Milton and Batemans Bay just falling short in the preliminary finals.

2nd Division – Cup Grand Final Jindabyne Bushpigs (1) v Bungendore Mudchooks (3) Only 1 competition separated these two clubs on the table, resulting in Jindabyne claiming the minor premiership and Bungendore having to play in the sudden death Minor Semi Final. The Bushpigs were coming into the finals having lost their last two matches, one of which was against Bungendore, while the Mudchooks have won four in a row include their two finals matches. Jindabyne have been here before with their most recent Grand Final and victory being in 2013, compared to Bungendore’s last Grand Final victories coming in 2010 and 2011. 2015 for Jindabyne has been disrupted year with a number of forfeits against them and unfortunate incident occurring in Boorowa, however there have been a number of senior figures who have kept the club on track. Captain and fly half Jake Roarty has been a part of the club for a number of years and is constantly there to ensure the players do not switch off and direct them around the park. 2014 Monaro player of the year Dave Akkersdyke also plays a huge role in the side and his work rate will be key to the Bushpigs chances of lift the cup again. Bungendore have come a long way this year thanks to the inclusion of Andy Goslett to their side and coaching staff. His involvement has provided the club with some much added muscle and direction in the forwards. John Steele has also been quality in the backs igniting the attack in times of need. Bungendore have also name brothers Steve and Chris Prail in the backline who will be supported by their cousin Jack Prail. This family connection could be an edge over Jindabyne if all three are on song. These two proud clubs share the results at one a piece for 2015 and both result have been quiet close. This match will be no different and may even go into extra time.

2nd Division – Plate Grand Final Taralga Tigers (5) v Boorowa Goldies (6) These two clubs weren’t far off the pace to make the cup final series and it showed with their involvement in the plate final series having been very entertaining with some high scoring games and quality rugby. Taralga were unable to repeat their efforts of last year, having a very young side in 2015, but coming home with the plate final win will be encouraging for the club. Boorowa will get their first chance at securing some silverware since 2009 when they won the Grand Final. Boorowa were able to withstand a fast finishing Batemans Bay side last weekend, a side that had won their last four of their last five matches. The Goldies were comfortably beaten by Taralga in their last encounter in the Major Semi Final but with more at stake, except them to rise to the occasion. As this is the first time such a Grand Final has taken place, anything can happen, especially with both clubs towns rallying behind their team to bring home the title.

Goulburn Rugby Union would like to thank their Major Sponsor, the Goulburn Workers Club and the other sponsors for their contribution and support to the club for the 2015 season.
