John I Dent Cup Preview: Semi Finals Saturday 25th & Sunday 26th July
After a long and exciting regular season, the final series is finally here and we have 4 well worthy teams fighting it out for the John I Dent Cup. This season has been full of action with the fight for the top 4 up for contention until the final few rounds, however ladder positions were not certain until full time in the Queanbeyan v Uni-Norths games in Round 14. Tuggeranong and Queanbeyan battled it out for the top spot for most of the season, while Wests snuck along quite nicely and almost pipped Queanbeyan at the end to secure 2 nd place. Vikings secured their 6th consecutive Minor Premiership thanks to a 12 and 2 season. The top three were only separated by two wins and some bonus points, while Royals did enough to secure 4th spot, but weren’t in any danger with Uni-Norths and Gungahlin 13 and 16 competition points behind them respectively. With these teams experiencing many of the highs and lows in trying to make the top 4 and now having done that, the rollercoaster ride hasn’t finished yet with the stakes even higher as it becomes sudden death for some this weekend and for others a chance to be one step closer to lifting the John I Dent Cup on August 8th.
Major Semi Final: Saturday 25th Tuggeranong (1) v Queanbeyan (2) – 3:25pm, Viking Park Previous Result: Tuggeranong 38 defeated Queanbeyan 12 – round 15 These two clubs are back at it again for another year, in what will be a replay of the 2014 Major Semi Final in which Queanbeyan upset Tuggeranong 33-32 to hand Vikings their second and final loss of the 2014. However, both teams have a number of new players, the season has been a few weeks longer than previous so this match up will be completely different to last years. Both clubs are coming off final round wins, with Vikings comfortably beating Gungahlin 44-17, while Queanbeyan had a tough hit out against Uni-Norths and only ran away with the win in the last five minutes of the game to secure an important 24-0 victory. Currently Vikings have the upper hand, winner two of the three fixtures this year, but that form goes out the window in this game. Both clubs are expecting it to be a dog fight, and the game will be won by the dominant forward pack. Both clubs thrive on momentum gained from their forwards, so a key objective for either side will be to prevent the forwards go forward. In the backs, both clubs have some slick finishers, but it will be an interesting battle between seasoned veteran Francis Fainifo and youngster Kieth Morgan. Also watch out for both half backs Joe Powell and Mitch Douch, both who are very clever and are a constant threat at the base of the ruck.
Minor Semi Final: Sunday 26th Wests (3) v Royals (4) – 3:15pm, Viking Park Previous Result: Wests 40 defeated Royals 31 – round 14 The last time these two met in a 1st grade finals game was back in 2011 when they clashed in the Minor Semi Final where Wests won in a close one 27-24. This year Wests have been able to handle Royals, winning all three matches, but like everyone knows, you can’t read into those past results, as finals are a different style of football. Wests have had two weeks to prepare for this match, having the bye last weekend, while Royals had a tough encounter against Easts, but managed to get through the game with a bonus point victory. This Minor Semi Final could be touch and go with either side, Wests have a quality back row that will make their presence felt at the breakdown, compared to Royals back row who will do a lot of damage in their ball carries. The battle of lineout will be key with Dave McKern and Tom Staniforth the usual go to guys. In the backs, regular centre paring Andrew Parson and Junior Luteru return for Wests, while Royals will be going with an unfamiliar 9, 10, 12, 13 combination who haven’t played together once this year. Players to watch are Rob Buarserau and Lausii Taliuli, both who know how to find their way to try line. Expect plenty of involvements from these two especially as the game starts to open up.

Only seven competition points separated these two to on the ladder. Queanbeyan and Royals were never in doubt of securing a minor semi-final spot as the next closest on the ladder was 13 points behind. Royals don’t have the best form going into the finals having two byes, two losses and a draw in their last the last five weeks. Queanbeyan have won 3 of their last five include and big 47-5 win over Uni-Norths. Of the two times these two have met, they share the points, with the latest game going the favour of Queanbeyan 22-19.

MATCH PREVIEW Tuggeranong were the dominant team in third grade finishing the season 11 points clear of Queanbeyan, losing only one game. Queanbeyan were able to finish second on the back of crucial bonus points which was the difference between them and Wests on the table. Vikings had a hard match up against Gungahlin last weekend which will prime them for this game, while Queanbeyan were able to take advantage of a sin binning to the Owls and winning 32-10. At the conclusion of this game, Tuggeranong will be present with the 2015 Minor Premiership.
Wests and Uni-Norths have shared the points this years in their meetings with the Owls getting the better of them at North Oval and Wests returning the favour at Jamison with a 45-15. Wests finished the season on the same number of wins as Queanbeyan, but missed out on four bonus points comparted to Queanbeyan 11 bonus points. Uni-Norths on the other hand had a mixed season and just scraped through by 1 competition points. Wests have are coming off a loss and a bye, while the Owls are coming off a loss and a win. This match could go either way, as on their day both teams are quality.

MATCH PREVIEW This will be the fourth time Royals and Tuggeranong have met in 2015, with Royals having won 2 of the three matches. In these matches the biggest deficit was by Tuggeranong won in round 12 23-7. Royals had the bye in round 17, but there last game was against Tuggeranong, which they won 28-22. Vikings took on Gungahlin winning with a bonus point 42-0. Both Royals and Tuggeranong finished the season on 60 competition points, but Royals were crowned Minor Premiers for the first time since 1991 as they had more number of wins. Royals will be presented with the trophy at the conclusion of this game.
Uni-Norths and Queanbeyan will play for the second time is as many weeks as these two battled in a hard fought and entertaining final round game. The Owls jumped out to a 19-7 lead before Queanbeyan came back and unfortunately missed a conversion to level it up in the second half. The score remained 19-17 and Queanbeyan secured the all-important bonus point which resulted in them gaining 4th on the ladder over Gungahlin. Of the two encounters this years, it is one a piece and both games have come down to the wire. Expect this sudden death final to be another close game between the two.

MATCH PREVIEW These two clubs met in last year’s Major Semi Final, with Vikings getting the better of Queanbeyan, winning 20-5. In 2015, Queanbeyan have won all three encounters with the biggest margin being by 16 points in Round 10, while the other two matches, The Whites won by four and two points. Queanbeyan are coming off a loss in the final round against Uni-Norths 17-7, while Tuggeranong comfortably beat Gungahlin 36-0. At the conclusion of this match, Queanbeyan will be presented with the 2015 Minor Premiership.
Wests will be fresh from their round 17 bye and looking to repeat on their previous encounter against Uni-Norths in which they won with ease 33-5. The Owls were in a situation last weekend where they need to secure at least a bonus point to lock in the final spot in the top 4. They successfully obtained that goal, with a comprehensive performance which saw them defeat the minor premier Queanbeyan 17-7. Wests played in this game last year and fell short of progressing by 5 points to Gungahlin.

FIRST & SECOND DIVISION COMPETITION FIRST DIVISION:
SOUTH COAST MONARO - SECOND DIVISION
With two rounds to go until the final series, Goulburn have all but wrapped up the 2015 Minor Premiership. Currently 13 points clear on nearest rival and with a game in hand, the club potentially could complete a perfect regular season. On the weekend, the Dirty Reds travelled to Cooma in which Cooma were putting on an old boys game as part of the festivities. Goulburn were far too strong in both grades, winning comfortably 57-17 in 1st grade and 69-5 in 2nd grade. Goulburn’s second grade are in the same predicament as their first grade side, and will take on second place Yass this weekend. This weekend fixture between Goulburn and Yass has been moved to Yass due to Goulburn’s ground being unsuitable to play on.
In round 13 in an important game on the Monaro side of the draw, and unfortunate situation took place in which the field a Taralga on Saturday was frozen over resulting in the game being abandoned. As a result, Taralga and Jindabyne are currently looking to find a time to reschedule the game.
Yass celebrated there ANZAC match against RMC with big wins for both 1st and 2nd Grade in the other match played last weekend. Round 14, Cooma and ADFA will take on each other and a win for ADFA will keep their slim finals chances alive depending on the results of ADFA and RMC’s match played on Thursday night. Hall and RMC will clash in a double point’s game for Round 3 which could shake up the ladders coming into the final round depending on results. Second Grade:
Despite the unlucky event in Taralga, the game between Bungendore and Crookwell went ahead and what a game it was, with Crookwell stunning Bungendore with a 15-6 win. Crookwell have closed the gap on Bungendore and with a bye in hand, a win this weekend against Jindabyne could see them over take the Mudchooks. Batemans Bay in the other game that took place, rejoined the winners circle after having a two week bye. The Boars made light work of Braidwood, thrashing them 59-15. This weekend Batemans Bay host Milton, while Braidwood and Broulee will battle in out for the final spot, as one of those team could miss out on the plate finals for 2015. Bungendore travel to Boorowa and will be looking to stay in touch with that vital minor premiership hopes. Whereas Boorowa you currently sit above Taralga, would love to hold onto that 5th spot and secure a home plate major semifinal.

2015 WOMEN’S COMPETITION ROUND 10 T be the final round for the women’s competition before their Semi Finals next weekend. This This will weekend both games will be played on Saturday 25th July on Viking Park number 2, in line with the Men’s Premier Division Major Semi Finals. Royals have wrapped up the 2015 Minor Premiership after their 41-12 victory over Tuggeranong last weekend at Griffith Oval. In that game Courtney Livermore was a standout scoring a hat-trick in the seven tries to two romping, while Sarah Carter scored a try and converted three of the tries. In the other games, Uni-Norths in muddy conditions at Nicholls were able to topple Gungahlin, winning 94-12. Georgia O’Neill and Talei Wilson scored hat-tricks while Georgia also kicked three conversion with Jocelyne Mara kick a further eight more. The win has the Owls jump to second on the ladder, and a win this weekend against Royals will cement that second sport for them. Royals and Uni-Norths will take on each other in a replay of last year’s grand final with both teams looking to go into the finals with form under their belts, this could end up being a very hard fought and close encounter. Kick off is at 1.25pm. Tuggeranong will take on Gungahlin after Royals and Uni-Norths and this game will also directly impact the position of the 2nd and 3rd. If Uni lose, Tuggeranong have the chance to overtake the Owls on the ladder. Kick off will be 3.25pm. TEAM Royals Uni-Norths
