John I Dent Cup Preview: GRAND FINAL Saturday 8th August
Grand Final: Tuggeranong Vikings (1) v Canberra Royals (4) Last met – Round 16: Tuggeranong 57 defeated Royals 7 at Viking Park After seventeen rounds and two weeks of intense finals football, two sides remain standing with the opportunity to become Champions for 2015. Minor Premiers Tuggeranong and Royals will square off for the right to hold aloft the John I Dent Cup late Saturday afternoon. There is a lot of hype surrounding Saturday’s match up with Tuggeranong looking to secure their fifth consecutive title, while Royals are a bit of a Cinderella story in the making as they have come from 4th to be 80 minutes away from securing their first John I Dent Cup since 1991. These two proud clubs last met in a Grand Final in 2013 when Vikings edged out Royals 28-21 to give Tuggeranong their third consecutive premiership. From that game back in 2013, 20 players will again feature whether it is in the run on side or named off the bench, which is remarkable for both clubs. 11 of those players come from the Royals outfit, and it will still be fresh in their minds of the chance they missed out on back then. For Tuggeranong 8 of last year’s starting side return the big stage and as always, their experience will be relied upon in the tough and close part of the game. Of the three occasion these two have clashed this season, Tuggeranong have been the dominant side, winning all three with the closest Royals coming to a victory being their round 12 clash 31-15. However that’s the last thing both teams will be thinking of coming into this match. While there is always a number of exciting factors about Grand Finals whether it be the crowd, a club aiming to end a premiership doubt, or a club going for a record number of wins, the all-important player match up battles are always something to watch. This year there are a lot of match up’s which will provide the fans with some memorable moments. In the forwards, lineouts will be key, with Vikings captain Gareth Clouston taking on Tom Staniforth in the second row. Both are aggressive and experienced so they will be used a lot in line out time. Around the park, the back rowers will be vital whether it is with their ball carries, or their presence at the breakdown. Royals have developed a nice little offload game between Tyson Tamihere, Steve Sione and Brendan Woodward and it will be vital to Royals as the look to punch holes through Vikings defense. Vikings backrow are a no nonsense group and will be there all game putting in the hard yards. Rowan Perry will be a threat at almost every breakdown, while Jarrad Buttler and Dean Oakman-Hunt will carry and defend all match. Both backlines have some magic and silky players running around and if given the slightest opening, you can guarantee they will exploit those openings and make you pay. Lausii Taliuli has been in frightening form for Royals and will be marked heavily, while his opposite number Jake Knight has lightning feet and given the slightest bit of room, he will be hard to stop. The other winger’s battle between Jerome Nuimata and Tim Cornforth also needs to be highlighted as both are very dangerous with ball in hand. Brent Hamlin has also found his feet since joining Royals late in the season and his combination with Craig McMahon is coming along nicely. If these two play like they have been, Royals will be an attacking threat all day. In saying that, Vikings have experience partners Joe Powell and Rodney Iona lining up, both that a very smart and a big game players. This game will no doubt have every one on the edge of their seats whether they are a Tuggeranong supporter, Royals supporter or just a supporter of ACT Club rugby. Tuggeranong have just lost two games this season and have feature in this game every year since 2009, while Royals are in red hot form after two impressive sudden death victories. Can Royals end not only their premiership drought but Vikings strong hold on the John I Dent Cup, or will Tuggeranong continue on from winning way as the bench mark of the competition? Either way this matchup has the liking to be another classic John I Dent Cup Grand Final.

MATCH PREVIEW Royals women’s are coming off a huge win against Gungahlin in last weekend’s semi final, compared to Vikings who were able to withstand pressure form defending premiers UniNorths to secure a spot in the Grand Final. Royals last won a the Grand Final in 2011 after finishing runners up last year, while Viking have not won since 2010 after an absence from the competition. Both teams have quality across the park and will rely on experienced players to get them across the line.

MATCH PREVIEW Wests handed Tuggeranong their first defeat of the season in the Major Semi Final, but Vikings quickly shook off that game by running away with a 34 point win over Queanbeyan in the preliminary final. Despite the score line in the major semi final, both teams have quality players especially in the back line, so expect the lead to change constantly in what is shaping up to be a very attack based Grand Final.

MATCH PREVIEW Queanbeyan were the far better side when these two clashed in the Major Semi Final win comfortably against the Minor Premiers. Tuggeranong were able to undo their efforts and defeat a gallant Wests outfit, who in a tight tussle, clawed their way back to be level, before Vikings scored late to secure memorable win. Tuggeranong are looking to secure back to back premierships while Queanbeyan last enjoyed success in 2013.

MATCH PREVIEW It is fitting that the teams that finished 1 & 2 on the ladder are the last ones standing. Queanbeyan will be refreshed and ready to go after there week off, while Tuggeranong responded in the best way possible to their Major Semi Final loss by thrashing Wests. There is not much difference between these two sides so expect another tight affair which may even go into extra time.

FIRST & SECOND DIVISION COMPETITION FIRST DIVISION:
SOUTH COAST MONARO - SECOND DIVISION
The regular season is done and dusted for another year and now only 5 of the 6 clubs remain. Goulburn & Hall have both 1st and 2nd grade through to the finals, while RMC & Cooma round out the 1st Grade finalist. RMC while finishing 4th in 2nd grade, have forfeited their semi final game due to player unavailability. Yass will therefore be the lone ranger in the 2nd grade final series, playing Goulburn this weekend.
The first combined South Coast Monaro Second Division regular season is now over with the competition now splitting into a Cup and Plate final series. The Minor Premiers from each zone in this case Jindabyne and Milton will square off to get one hand on the Grand Final with the game being played in Jindabyne. Jindabyne secure the minor premiership over Bungendore by one point, compared to Milton were 9 points clear of Batemans Bay.
In preparation for the final series, Goulburn made light work of RMC in 1st grade winning 58-0 but it was a lot closer in 2nd grade with Goulburn holding on to win 1712. A tough encounter like that could go both ways for Goulburn in 2nd grade, while in 1st grade, there match up against Hall this weekend is expected to be very physical and a close game. Hall in 1st grade had a 12 all draw with Cooma, which will boost Cooma’s confidence going into the final series. Where as in 2nd grade, Hall won comfortable and are now straight through to the preliminary final as a result of RMC forfeit. Yass had a chance to have both grades in, but were unfortunately beating easily by ADFA in 1st Grade, while the roles were reversed in 2nd grade with Yass ending the regular season on high before taking on Goulburn in the Major Semi. Semi Final Fixtures – Poidevin Oval, Goulburn 1st Grade Major – Goulburn v Hall, 3pm 1st Grade Minor – Cooma v RMC, 1.15pm 2nd grade Major – Goulburn v Yass, 11.40am
Bungendore, while they came up short, they will host the Minor Semi Final against Crookwell. The Mudchooks will be confident going into this game after traveling to Jindabyne on the weekend and coming away with the win. Crookwell though will be fresh from the bye, and ready to go one further after finishing runners up last year. In the Plate Semi Finals, Taralga and Boorowa will clash for consecutive weeks as the two clubs finish 5th and 6th overall. Taralga were able to defeat Boorowa at home last weekend quiet comfortably and but that result may mean nothing if the Tigers cant back it up this weekend. Batemans Bay strung together a couple of late wins in the season and snuck past Braidwood and will host the Plate Minor Semi Final. The Boars finished the season with 3 wins and a draw, while the Redbacks had the bye and won their last encounter in round 14. All matches this weekend are too close to call and will add to an already big weekend in club rugby.
