John I Dent Cup Preview: Round 16 Saturday, 11 July

MATCH OF THE ROUND: Wests (2) v Queanbeyan (3)@ Jamison Oval First Grade: 3.15pm, Reserve Grade: 1.50pm, Colts 12.25pm Previous Result: Queanbeyan 20 defeated Wests 12 – Rd 4, 2015 Wests have been sneaking along nicely towards the back end of the competition and have now leap frogged Queanbeyan into second spot. This will be Wests last game before the finals, so they will be looking the secure a bonus point victory, which will make it rather difficult for Queanbeyan to finish second on the ladder. The Lions have won their last four consecutive matches, including last weekend 36-7 victory over Easts. Breakaway Michael Smith was a standout scoring a double in the six tries to one win. Coach Craig Robberds has named an unchanged forward pack, while in the backs, Damien House has been named at fly half, Andrew Parson returns to inside centre with Ratu Tagive shift from Fullback to outside centre. Queanbeyan were unable to produce the same heroics which saw them defeat Tuggeranong last time they played them at Viking Park. The loss has seen them slip to third on the ladder based on number of wins. The result of this match has significant bearings on ladder positions especially for the all-important major semi-final opportunity. Two changes have been made in the backline this week, with Doug Lancaster and Anthony Bozzato returning to the wings. The battle up front will be exciting to watch, as well as the match up of Michael Smith and Dan Penca who are both renowned on ballers and strong ball carries.

Uni-Norths(5) v Easts (7)@ ANU North Oval First Grade: 3.05pm, Reserve Grade: 1.40pm Previous Result: Uni-Norths 27 defeated Easts 12 – Rd 4, 2015 After shocking Tuggeranong, the Owls were unable to back up that effort going down to an enthusiastic Eagles team 32-22. Gungahlin kicked a penalty goal right on full time to deny Uni-Norths a second valuable bonus points, with the two clubs battling out for 5th spot on the ladder. Uni started on fired, leading 12-0 after as many minutes thanks to a driving maul try and some slick backline running and finishing, but were unable to capitalize on that promising start. This week the Owls will need to refocus and in the final home game of the season secure a victory on the clubs ‘old boys’ day. Only one changes has been made with the return of Tevita Vahai from suspension, but he will be in the unfamiliar second row spot. Easts showed an improved perfoamce against Wests last weekend going down 36-7. The only try of the match came through some nice backline running and support lines, which saw Matt Guigni score on his return. To Easts credit, they also played the match with 14 men for 20 minutes and managed to restrict Wests in parts of that period. This week expect Easts to be up for this game, as this game is always exciting and spirited contest between the two clubs. With the season winding up, look for both Easts and Uni-Norths to throw the ball around and play attacking rugby.

Tuggeranong (1) v Royals 4 @ Viking Park First Grade: 3:05pm, Reserve Grade: 1:40pm, Colts: 12:15pm Previous Result: Tuggeranong 31 defeated Royals 15 – Rd 12, 2015 Tuggeranong responded according after their loss to the Owls by outplaying Queanbeyan as they ran in five tries to two in the 38-12 victory. Rodney Iona was again a stand out and was awarded the skins man of the match for the third time this year. His performance was also back up by winger Jake Knight who scored a double, while Phil Kite, Ernest Suavai and Jerome Nuimata also crossed the white stripe. This weekend, Joe Powell will return to the side after a period off due to injury. His inclusion will boost the side as well as add a direction around the park with the forwards and also the tempo of the game. Royals will be fresh from the break and will now be looking to finalise combinations and patters for the finals series and what an opportunity for them to test themselves then taking on the defending champions. Last time these two played, Vikings were the better team, however with a number of personnel returning, this match will be vastly different to that of round 12. Make sure you watch the combination of Brent Hamlin and Pedro Roland as over the past few games, they have bene starting to click lead the side around the paddock in impressive fashion. The battle of the halves will be great to watch and could prove the difference in the result.

MATCH PREVIEW Uni-Norths re-joined the winner’s circles after losing two on the trot defeating Gungahlin 35-10. The Owls came out the blocks firing in the first half, led by fly half Jordan Thompson and a double to Matt Bautz. The important bonus point win, has the Owls in 4th but only 4 points clear of Royals. Both clubs have two games remaining so if the Owls can secure back to back victories in the final two rounds they will feature in the final series. Easts will be looking to turn around a disappointing game against Wests in which they were held scoreless in a one sided affair.

The Owls played in a seesawing battle against the Eagles in a game that had a lot at stake surrounding the finals. Unfortunately the outcome of the match has not been determined due to discrepancy in the score, meaning the ladder has not been update. Regardless of the result, this match is a bonus point must win for the Owls if they are to have any chance in making the final with Gungahlin having the bye this weekend. Easts unfortunately had to forfeit their game last weekend against Wests due to numbers. This is the clubs 1st forfeit of the year in that grade.

MATCH PREVIEW Vikings were unable to continue on from their winning ways, going down to an impressive Queanbeyan side that have only lost one game thus far. This weekend Tuggeranong will need to win if they want to finish the season playing in the all-important major semi-final. Royals though, need to win if they want to have any chance of finishing the season in 4th. Royals would also like to congratulate Nathan Regan who will be playing his 150th game for the club.

What a blockbuster on offer in the colts competition with the top of the table clash and the minor premiership on the line. Royals do not play in the final round but if they secure a win they will more than likely take home the Minor Premiership depending on result from round 17 and bonus points. Vikings will be coming into this game in form having won 5 matches in a row. Both clubs are at 1 a piece this season, and this will be another close battle.

MATCH PREVIEW A win this weekend for Tuggeranong will all but secure the Minor Premiership for the club in 3rd grade. Vikings have been the form 3rd grade side of the year only losing the one game. Last weekend they were tested by Queanbeyan, but again these showed their superiority. Royals in their last outing before their bye, showed an improved effort against Wests going down by 19. Last time these two played Vikings won by 23 points.

Tuggeranong will be the Minor Premiers in 4th grade but now will be playing to continue their consolidate on combinations and fine tune plans as they look to go one further than last year and win the Grand Final. After having the weekend off like Royals, this game will be perfect preparation for the finals will Royals needing to win if they have any chance of finishing higher on the ladder. Royals would also like to congratulate Mick Crossman who will be playing his 200th game for the club.

MATCH PREVIEW Wests 2nd grade racked up a century against Easts on the weekend winning 108-0. The Lions were far too good for Easts running in 18 tries which included one hattrick to Connor Munro and then seven other players scoring doubles. This weekend Wests have their work cut out for them, taking on Queanbeyan who thanks to the boot of Angus Balmaks beat Vikings 30-14. The win has Queanbeyan sitting atop and if they secure a victory this weekend they will be crowned Minor Premiers. Last time these two played Queanbeyan were not troubled winning 34-13.

Wests Colts had a week off after their loss to Royals back in round 14. With this being their last game of the season, Wests will look to finish their season off on a positive with a win. The team are yet to taste success this season, but have made teams work to secure their victories. Queanbeyan were outclassed by Vikings, who beat them comfortably 45-5. This weekend The Whites must secure a win if they are to have any chance of making the final spot in the colts finals, with Gungahlin having the bye and having secured one more win then them.

MATCH PREVIEW Wests 3rd also didn’t play last weekend with Easts forfeiting. Despite not playing a game, Wests secure an important bonus point win, which has them now 6 points clear on Queanbeyan. Like 4th Grade, this is a critical game with so much on offer regarding final. Queanbeyan went down last weekend to Vikings 2713. The last time these two clubs played it was a very tight affair, with the Lions being able to hold on and secure a one point victory 8-7. Due to the importance of this fixture, expect it to be another nail biter.

This will be Wests last 4th Grade game before the final series as they have the bye in round 17. After having the bye last weekend, The Lions currently sit in 2nd spot on 34 points, and if they secure a win this weekend they will be in a pretty good position to lock down 2nd spot on the ladder and will face Vikings in the Major Semi Final. Queanbeyan on the other hand, forfeited last weekend against Tuggeranong, which has them remain on the same amount of competition points, and now put themselves in a must win position if they want to get two cracks at playing in the Grand Final and defending their title.

CLUB RUGBY PHOTOS – 2015 By Nick Guoth

2015 WOMEN’S COMPETITION ROUND 8 Last weekend’s encounters were pretty one sided affairs in terms of results with both Royals and Tuggeranong making easy work to Gungahlin and Uni-Norths. Royals ran in ten tries to two against the Eagles, winning 62-10. In this games, Kasey Dragisic was on fire, scoring half the teams points with a personal haul of 36 points. The tally included an astonishing six tries and three conversions. A wonderful effort. But she wasn’t the only one causing havoc, as Courtney Livermore chimed in with a hat-trick and kicking three conversion herself for a tally of 21 individual points. Another great personal effort. In the other game, Tuggeranong were far superior to the Owls, outscoring them 36-7. Past encounters between these two have been rather close, but it was Tayla Stanford who proved to be the difference, running in three tries herself and kicking a conversion. The win now has created a gap between second and third. This weekend there is cracking game on offer, with the top of the table clash between Tuggeranong and Royals at Viking Park. The last time these two played Vikings took the biscuits, winning 21-12. Again this will be another close match up. The owls are at home against Gungahlin which they will need to get their season back on track with a big win, while Gungahlin will be looking to continue improve in their first season in the competition. FIRST & SECOND DIVISION COMPETITION FIRST DIVISION:

SOUTH COAST MONARO - SECOND DIVISION

Two games are being played this weekend with the blockbuster between Goulburn & Hall, who will clash for the third time this season before the finals. Goulburn are undefeated and only sit three points of Hall, however The Dirty Reds have two games in hand, and one which they will play this on Sunday. Hall continued there winning ways making easy work of Yass, who they beat with a bonus point 48-13. This match up will be one tough match, as the last time these two play, Goulburn won by 4 points.

Now the clubs have gone back into their own zones, we will now start to see some significant change in the ladder. Ladder leaders Jindabyne enjoyed their last week off and will now play four games straight before the finals. Their nearest rival Bungendore lessened the gap with a bonus point 43-22 victory over Taralga. The loss by Taralga has seen them slip 5 points behind Crookwell who also came away with a win against Boorowa, but didn’t secure a bonus point. The Dogs victory over Boorowa was impressive considering last time they played only 3 points separated them.

In second grade, Hall secured their third win in a row, defeating Yass 38-12. There clash against Goulburn will be highly anticipated like 1st grade due to the history between previous encounters including the 2014 Grand Final upset by Hall. In their last match up Goulburn secured a bonus point victory, something they have done in every game they have played this year. The other matches this weekend is Cooma travelling to Yass. A win to Yass will see them jump into the top four in 1st grade, while Cooma will be out to secure back to back victories. The Rams won the last time they played the Red Devils and this was in both grades in Cooma. Second Grade:

In the South Coast, only one game was played between leaders Milton and Broulee. Milton now sit 4 points clear of Braidwood, thanks to their bonus point 34- 12 win. Braidwood though, has the bye and received a 20-0 victory with Bay Red’s withdrawal. This weekend Bungendore and Crookwell clash in the match of the round. Bungendore will be at home, making the task for Crookwell rather difficult, however it is not out of reach. Taralga will be host Jindabyne, which while ladder position say Jindabyne are the better team, expect this game to come down to the wire as Taralga look to force themselves into that wild card spot. Down coast Braidwood host Milton in an important match for ladder positioning. The last time these two met, Milton won 24-0.
