T Like here’s No Place Home A few months ago, I was returning from a Wednesday evening Bible study with my small children riding comfortably in the back seat. They were elated as we passed through the surrounding neighborhoods knowing that our home was just around the corner. My four-year old, who is very intelligent and often surprises my husband and I, began describing the homes as we passed by. To him, some homes were big and some were small. Some homes he noticed were fenced in while others were hidden behind trees. And there were some homes which were short while others were tall (i.e. one-story and two-story homes). My son cheerfully continued for miles until he finally gave up and simply said, “Mama, it’s good everyone has a home.” I briefly looked at him through the rear-view mirror as his eyes cheered with delight. Unbeknownst to him our country continues to be saturated with men, women and children whose homes have been foreclosed due to this rough economy and families have lost their homes to Hurricane Katrina, deadly earthquakes and fires. Many lives have been personally affected temendously by these causes and it’s unfortunate that local bridges and community parks have become homes for some. So, as we turned into our subdivision and ultimately into our two-car garage, I turned around and spoke softly to him and said, “Baby there’s no place like home.”
The holidays are generally over commercialized with images and ideas that continue to draw away the real meaning of the season. Parents are driven to late night shopping sprees hoping to snag the limited edition of their child’s favorite toy. Men and women are bombarded with the thoughts of fulfilling an endless list of gift-must haves before the office party. But is this what it’s really all about? Whatever happened to the value of family, friends and loved ones nestled together in the sweet spirit of this season? Whatever happened to the meaningful presence of just being around those who seem to continue to bring out the best in us? Whatever happened to Thanksgiving? Who bought the spirit of Christmas? As I think back to one of my favorite movies, The Wizard of Oz, the concept of Dorothy running away to find her missing desires seem to be a mirrored-reflection of today. You see, Dorothy forgets that what brought her the greatest joy and the experience of real love was right there in her own back yard. It was right in front her face. She just needed to be reminded. This year, take the opportunity to make any necessary adjustments to help make your holidays unforgettable by remembering what this season is truly about—love.
God’s greatest gift, Jesus was bestowed upon all mankind in hopes that the same love would be returned from each one of us. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting” (Jn. 3:16). The essence of Thanksgiving, Christmas and the bringing in of the New Year should be focused on being thankful and giving more than receiving. Take the time to remember where you and your family were last year. Take the time to add value to your family’s gathering by embracing those who are still here and all of the ways God has continued to sustain you. Here are a few tips to help make your holidays even more memorable.
PL E
8What Truly Matters—We could all probably use a new car, an extra hundred or two at the end of the month or another accessory to add to our ever-changing, dietrestricted wardrobe. But life is more than what we drive or what we wear. Learn to value every gift that Heaven sends. Be grateful for what many undervalue as “small” such as good health, peace and love. “And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love” (1 Cor. 13:13).

8Time with Family—Anything we can create with our hands can be replaced. Yet, the one thing we can never receive more of, replenish or redeem is time. This year, take an extra step to spend as much time as you can with your loved ones. Remember, no one is promised tomorrow. “Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another…” (Roms.12:10).
GETTING IT TOGETHER
I truly enjoyed the article on “imperfections”. I believe many times we create expectations for ourselves that are beyond our reach just to please others. If we allow the glory of God to permeate what’s missing in us, we can find true purpose. Tamika S. Email
MIGHTY GOOD MEN
8One Day Only—If each one of us knew we were living our last twenty-four hours what things would we do? Where would we go? Who would we talk to? Learn to live one day at a time. Enjoy the blessings of the moment. Tomorrow, if it comes, will bring its own challenges, surprises and opportunities. Treasure every minute as if it were your last. It just may very well be. “Whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away” (James 4:4). Remember, this holiday season is more than about what is underneath the tree. Enjoy the fellowship of one another and be grateful for what you do have. Be generous with your time and money by extending a helping hand to those in need. Volunteer at your local shelters and organizations and focus on helping those who are less fortunate.

SURVIVING TEMPTATION
PL E
I am a freshman in college and consider myself to be a Christian. While I strive to live a life that’s pleasing to God, I am constantly surrounded by temptation. There are so many things college students are exposed to that are sometimes hard to walk away from. But if God forgives sin, do you think He will understand if I succumb to these temptations and do things I know are wrong? Dear Confused in College,
Confused in College -Akron, OH
As any emerging adult experiencing the freedom to make your own choices without the family or custodial influences for the first time, you are going to face various temptations. You are going to be introduced to different experiences and outlooks on life. However, what you must understand now is that the decision of what is right or what is wrong is yours to make. And you will have to live with the consequences of your choices.
SA M
Your acceptance of Christ does not immune you from temptations. However, God has provided a way of escape as written in 1 Cor. 10:13 “No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able.” Yet, when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.” Your way out is to stay in the Word of God. It is hard to stand for Christ when you are not rooted, grounded and applying His word to every aspect of your life. And sometimes you may find yourself standing alone because of your convictions. Be encouraged. God does forgive and places you in right standing with Him; nevertheless, you will have to deal with the consequences. Premeditation of sin is wrong. God gives us grace and He forgives us when we sin, therefore, we should not take His grace for granted. Paul wrote in Roms. 6:1-2 “What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?” You will always have a choice between wickedness and righteousness. Try your best to choose righteousness. You can do it! You have been chosen to be an ambassador for Christ. Bring glory to His name wherever you are and in all that you do.

The Eriam Sisters?
The Eriam Sisters are a multi-talented family of sisters who are of Eritrean-American descent and currently reside in the Seattle Washington area. They are born-again Christians who understand that Christ is the center of their life. Although they sing “POP” music their walk is one of great faith, and close family knit ties. Their parents have instilled in them the need to stay together and to look out for one another. When you meet them you immediately feel the love they have, and they embrace you as if they have known you for years. This dynamic group has been touring the country and has most recently been performing in Africa, Holland, and Sweden. The Eriam Sisters are currently releasing their first single nationally entitled “I want you back” a remake of the Jackson 5 classic. Their vocal quality and poise sets them apart from most young groups today. The ages and names of the sisters are Haben 13 years, Salina 16 years, and Lianda 18 years. These young ladies have worked with some of the most respected producers in the music industry, Andrew Lane (High school Musical) and DJ Freestyle just to name a few. Millions of the country might remember the Eriam Sisters from the America’s Got Talent Show seen nationally on NBC. They placed in the semi final round, before being eliminated. Many of the judges coined them the next “Destiny’s Child”. Even though the sisters are primarily a ‘POP” group in the music genre, they have not forgotten their roots. They have been seen on TBN, and have performed in various churches as well. You can follow the Eriam Sisters on www.eriamsisters.com .

RUNNING THE RACE FOR GOOD HEALTH
“...And let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith...” Hebs. 12:1-2
overcommitted, and dramatically overdone! So while we are advised to get out and “move it” to get healthy, we envision a race we don’t have time to run. When the animated feature, Madagascar first came out in 2005, I was intrigued by the Lemur, King Julian. Though he was a bit over the top in enthusiasm, he brought in a fresh perspective of just getting out there, moving it and having fun. What he chose to do for fun is something we all need to do to remove toxins from our bodies.
The simple act of moving our arms, legs, torso, and neck play a big part in releasing toxins from by way of the lymph system. Lymphatic vessels contain fluid made of white cells, chiefly lymphocytes. These lymph fluids play two different roles. First, they feed the body by
• 12 c. water
• 1 bay leaf
• 3 lbs. lean chicken
• 2 tbl. olive oil
• 1 lbs. andouille sausage, sliced
• 1/2 c. all-purpose flour
• 1 & 1/2 lbs. okra
• 1 tea. dried basil
• 1 (28 oz) can whole tomatoes
• 2 tea. salt
• 1 green bell pepper, chopped • 2 stalks celery, chopped
• 2 cloves garlic, minced
transporting various nutrients such as salts, minerals, and proteins to every cell of the body. Secondly, lymph fluids transfer cell waste and debris that accumulate from normal cell function away from the cells and turns them over to the blood which in turn carries the waste to the kidneys, lungs, colon, and skin for elimination.
SA M
Face it, we live in a time when everyone is overworked,
INGREDIENTS
In a healthy state these beanshaped glands called lymph nodes, are about the size of an almond. However, when they are overloaded with excess toxins they swell becoming painful. This occurs when the body experiences colds and infections as well. Limiting improper foods can improve the lymph function. Another way to drive unwanted toxins from our system is through regular physical activity. Like King Julien, we need to move it, move it, move it because the lymphatic system does not have a pump and doesn’t move on its own. The contraction of the muscles in the body, due primarily to movement, keeps the lymph fluids flowing. If we don’t move it, the toxins can overload and become hazardous to our health. If we borrowed just a hint of

• 1 tea. ground black pepper • 1 tea. dried thyme 1 tea. cayenne pepper 1 tea. file powder
DIRECTIONS
In a large pot, combine water and chicken and bring to a boil. Simmer and reduce heat until chicken is tender. Usually about 1 hour. Strain chicken and cool. Save broth from chicken. Heat 2 tablespoons oil in a skillet over medium heat. Then add okra and sir frequently. Set aside. Stir flour and remaining 1/2 cup oil in large pot or crock pot. If using a crock pot, allow gumbo to simmer overnight or at least 12 hours. Cook over medium heat until deep golden brown. Add 4 cups reserved broth, okra, andouille sausage, tomatoes, bell pepper, celery, garlic, bay leaf, salt, thyme, basil, cayenne, and pepper. Cover partially and simmer until thickened, roughly about 1 1/2 hours. Add chicken and file powder to gumbo and simmer gently 15 minutes. Pour on top of rice and serve. King Julian’s fun loving enthusiasm and incorporate 30 minutes of physical activity five days a week, we can experience renewed energy and healthier outlooks. So what are you waiting for? A KINGDOM FAMILY
The Way It Should Be
MONEY WI$E getting out of debt the right way
A Kingdom family must begin to welcome the King of Kings to take dominion over their lives in order to have a successful home. I remember my wonderful dad and mom, the late Bishop Jesse and Ionie Grace White, conducting family devotion with my siblings and I (all nine of us) before we went to school. Some parents may check their children’s Algebra or Chemistry homework; but they hardly ever have them read the Word of God and pray before going to school. A school education is a wonderful asset to have, but it “But the mercy of the will not improve a child’s attitude or Lord is from everlasting their character. These elements are only fashioned through the Word of to everlasting on those God which I believe daily devotion who fear Him, And His before going to work or heading off righteousness to children’s to school needs to be re-birthed in children (Psa. 107:13)” homes across the nations (Deut. 6).
SA M
While getting into debt is easy, paying it off can be challenging. Here are 4 tips you need to keep in mind if you’re serious about paying off your debt:
“A Kingdom Family is a true gift from above, created by God and fashioned in Love. So never ever take it for granted, but in prayer and the Word be sure to stay planted. Don’t dare try to build it alone for you see; family takes a group effort to be all what God intended it to be!”
1) Pray about the debt and ask God to help.
2) Identify ways to make extra money to pay towards your debt (part-time job, selling things, etc.). Increasing your income can shed months off debt payments and save thousands of dollars in interest. 3) Don’t try to go at it alone. Work with a coach or counselor to create a budget and debt payment plan you can stick with each month. Having a plan you can follow each month will help relieve anxiety and build confidence.
4) Don’t run from creditors or from those to whom you owe. Communicate openly with them by contacting them and letting them know what you can commit to paying based on your budget and debt payment plan. If you’re in debt, focus on these four tips with a renewed sense of purpose and motivation to live free of financial bondage.
Jason Price blogs about personal finance from a Christian stewardship perspective at www.onemoneydesign.com
A Kingdom family must have God as the solid foundation of their lives both individually and collectively. The fruit of the spirit should be evident in our daily walk. It is when a person respects and values God and themselves, can they then respect and value their parents as well as all others. This holiday season, share with your children the sacrifice Jesus made to redeem the souls of mankind, and how He intended for us to walk in the spirit of unity and love as representatives of His Kingdom (John 17). Cherish and give thanks to God for each moment you spend together and spread some love everyday because love isn’t real love until you give it away. Happy Holidays!

Church Planting in the Muslim world
“The house churches we’re planting are simple, not liturgical,” notes Michael [not his real name] a Pioneers churchplanter serving in Indonesia. “We praise God, we pray, we share testimonies. We read one story from the Bible and repeat it together.” This organic model of ministry is easily reproduced and allows new believers to grow in their faith as they look to scripture -- not the western missionary -- for guidance and support.
Imagine if following Jesus cost you your home, your family, your job, your life. What would it take to reach you with the gospel? MULTIPLY, a new web video series from Pioneers-USA, explores these questions from the perspective of church planters serving in the Muslim world.
Photo credit: Child Evangelism Fellowship Inc.
SA M
In the first episode of MULTIPLY, viewers journey to a city in Indonesia where the costs of following Jesus are high. In the face of persecution, poverty and spiritual warfare, God is drawing Muslims to himself and building his church through the sacrifice and partnership of Western church planters and Indonesian believers. While starting a church in the United States may be as simple as renting a school auditorium and broadcasting a video feed to a portable screen, in the Muslim world it looks much different.
Future MULTIPLY videos will explore church planting among Muslims in Central Africa, the Middle East and immigrant communities living in Western countries -- all with the goal of stimulating Christians to consider their biblical responsibility to bring the good news to Muslims, whether next door or on the other side of the world.

Today, CEF of Brazil reaches over 900,000 children per year which is slightly more than the number of children CEF reaches in the United States. Looking to the future, CEF of Brazil would like to reach the indigenous ethnic groups, establish a presence in 20 new cities, recruit new workers and form a strong network of supporters and volunteers. Beyond its borders, CEF of Brazil would like to continue its mission to share the gospel with children in Portuguese-speaking countries around the world. It already has planted a CEF presence in Angola and Mozambique; as noted above, both of these countries had CEF representatives at the anniversary celebration. “CEF of Brazil is a perfect model of missions,” said Mr. Kauffman. “The work was started by missionaries, it became indigenous and self-sustaining, and now it is outwardly focused on Portuguesespeaking Africa and beyond.” For more information, contact Melody Bentley at 571-274-6058.

It’s been over a year since the catastrophic 7.1 earthquake devastated the already impoverished nation of Haiti. Since the earthquake, millions of dollars in aid seem to have done little to rebuild, or even clear the debris left from that horrific event. However, one private charity is forging ahead with its own recovery plans and has recently completed construction on a vibrant and bustling new village.
Rows and rows of rainbow colored houses were built for victims of the devastating earthquake that shook Haiti in January 2010. Fully funded by donors and built by Love A Child, Inc., the new village includes almost 500 individual homes, with the first 50 given to amputees who lost limbs in the earthquake. The houses are built from termite-proof lumber instead of concrete for safety in future earthquakes, and built to code to withstand hurricane-force winds. Each home was provided to its family fully furnished, and each contains a small garden area to grow fresh produce. These plots are not temporary structures, but are permanent new homesteads for hundreds of grateful families who voted to name their new

It is truly a miracle for so many who lost everything, including limbs and loved ones, in the earthquake. In addition to housing and roads, the village contains multiple deep wells for clean drinking water, two playgrounds, two basketball courts, a soccer field, and a 24-hour medical clinic. Love A Child also plans to build a central community marketplace, where artisans, farmers, fishermen, and crafters can sell their wares and earn a livable wage. Love A Child’s ultimate goal in this project is to build a self-sustained and profitable community, to give Haitians the tools they need to start again. The
blessing

DECEPTIVE
ave you ever heard of the old saying, “What looks good doesn’t mean it is good?” For example, as we feast in the depth of the holiday traditions of baked ham, turkey with all the shavings, corn bread dressing, rice pilaf and every side and dessert one could imagine on the seemingly endless buffet table, the festival is too tempting to resist. Oh, just one or two bites could not possibly do any harm, right? It looks too good to pass. But according to the American Heart Association, for the more than 70 million people living every day with some form of heart disease, it’s not good. As a matter of fact, it’s a deceptive blessing.
We can take this food for thought and apply it not only to our natural lifestyle, but in our spiritual walk as well. Think about it for one moment. The Bible teaches us that Satan has three goals. He comes to “steal, kill and destroy” (John 10:10). In fact, he has never updated his resume or changed his career path. He has one job to do and that is seeking who he can devour (1 Pet. 5:8). The enemy thrives on his focus to distract you and to derail you from living in the abundance Christ has offered. But is the responsibility of reaching your destiny, fulfilling the call or walking in the path of righteousness God’s? Or is the assurance of getting to your place of plentiful and obtaining spiritual success soley dependent upon Him? The answer is simple and found in Joshua 24:15 “…choose for yourselves this day who you will serve.” Yes, the choice is all up to you.
From the very beginning, it was never God’s intention to have a relationship with us that seemed robotic or forced. He wanted a connection that was mutually desired by both. Therefore, God in all of His infinite wisdom created man and woman with the ability to choose. He gave you and I the right to decide whether we desire life or death, blessings or curses, and good or evil. God gave every single one of us the limitless ability to have and to receive our heart’s desire for whatever we choose. And with this capability, our adversary always and craftily presents a counterfeit.
I once read an interesting article on how to spot a fake diamond. The writer suggested several ways how consumers can be secure and confident that their purchase was not an imitation or fraudulent. It was unbelievable to read how many people could be deceived and unaware that what they thought they were receiving was actually not the “real thing.” I thought to myself how many people had an opportunity to read the article as I had done. Amazingly, the page counter did not suggest the millions as I had hoped to imagine. Now, it would be an even greater ignominy if I were to continue writing this article without giving you just a few of these tips to increase your knowledge and arm you from the same mistakes others have made. So, here are a few guidelines for you to keep in mind as you make your purchases this season. Whenever something is authentic it is not accompanied by poor construction or setting. In order words, it does not look as if it is about to fall apart. This would be an embarrassment to the manufacturer who prides himself on presenting a product at its best. It would also not display clearly visible marks or patterns that are not a part of the original design. Authenticity is just that—it’s real and does not bear the fashionable mistake of being a look-a-like along with any elements of deterioration or weaknesses. And finally, if it’s truly genuine, you will not have that internal feeling to beware. Likewise, God has indeed given us this same type of knowledge that can prevent many of the mistakes in life we tend to leave to the impression that we just didn’t know. He has given us wisdom and keys to make wise decisions in every facet of our lives and He has armed us with the ability to avoid so many downfalls and traps the enemy has set to keep us deceived. It’s all in His word—the Bible. Let’s examine an example to help understand the difference between God’s blessings and Satan’s deceptive blessing.
“When a blessing is from God you can believe it’s going to be exactly what you need to accomplish His purpose and fulfill a need in your life. ” For instance, you’re in need of a new car. Your credit may not be perfect and your income is just above making ends meet. Here’s how God has armed us from deception:
s
Simply The Best—James 1:17, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.”
s
You Mean There’s More—Deuteronomy 28:2 And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, because you obey the voice of the LORD your God. You’ve landed the perfect job. Your skills and education may not have been obtained from an Ivy League school, but the supervisor was impressed with your integrity and reliability that your references raved about. In just a few months or years, your supervisor has talked about a promotion that not only comes with a raise, but a change in hours and not your pay. You were even able to get your friend on and the potential for travelling abroad and learning new skills is just the outlet you need to start your own business once God releases you.
PL E
When a blessing is from God you can believe it’s going to be exactly what you need to accomplish His purpose and fulfill a need in your life. It will be perfect in the sense that it’s not incomplete or lacking a necessity. God can lead you to a dealership with a vehicle that your credit qualifies for without you needing a co-signer or financing with an APR that’s obviously over the legal limit. This vehicle will get you from point A to B without the threat of needing to drive with a two spare tires just in case.
Finally, here is one last example of God’s blessing verses the enemy’s deception.
On the other end, Satan will present a vehicle that’s top of the line and seems as if it was right there when you arrived at the dealersip beaming with an angelic glow. It’s laced with this-can’tbe-real-leather-for this-cheap, wood grain panels and a 6-CD player you can blast all of your praise music on. Yet, you never even asked for the salesman to lift the hood so you can see the will-need-to-be-replaced-transmission and engine just as soon as you drive off the lot with no return.
SA M
It looks good, but is it worth it? It’s your choice.
Here’s another example. You’re in need of a house. You’ve stayed with one roommate after another or in a small apartment while saving enough money to purchase your own. You have a little money saved for a rainy day just in case you need to replace the carpet, add a security system or put up a gated fence. Here’s how God has armed us from Deception:
s
No Tears With This—Proverbs 10:22,“The blessing of the LORD makes one rich, and He adds no sorrow with it.” If the blessing is truly from God the location will be comfortable for the commute back and forth to work. You’ll enjoy the neighborhood and surrounding areas and feel as though you’ve inherited your very own castle. You’ll be joyful in the sense of wanting to invite others to a house-warming event or to just stop buy and visit. It’s your new home and you’re excited about this next phase of your life.
On the other hand, Satan can present you with a home that’s in the richest of neighborhoods that the bank made-an-error-toyour-advantage with the listing. It has a generous five bedrooms and three baths that you’ll need to purchase separate furniture for on your newly-given ridiculous line of credit. It’s designed to help improve your credit as long as you pay the monthly minimum. But you never thought to ask the agent who hurried along after you signed the contract about the flood watch post near the entrance or why there were so many other vacant homes in the subdivision. Again, it looks good, but is it worth it? It’s still your choice.
One the other side, the enemy can present employment with all the financial perks and you don’t have to use up all your gas because the luxuriou company car is available. You just have to be responsibile for filling the tank daily as a part of your varying job descripition The people seem friendly and you don’t mind that not one of them has ever even spoken of Christ. As a matter of fact, it’s against the company policy to discuss or display any affection to the church while on the clock. Yet in the excitement of the new hire, you never thought about how much over time was required therefore eliminating your attendance at Bible study and the implication that you’ll probably be too tired to make it on Sunday morning. Ask yourself one question, is it worth it? But again, it’s your choice. God has a way of doing things in one day that can take us an entire lifetime if we do it without Him. But it’s our choice to make. The blessings of the Lord are always designed to take us further rather than keep us stagnated. They are designed by Him to be plentiful in not only our lives, but also to those who are connected to us such as our children, in-laws and even to the local church we attend. However, Satan’s deception can make us selfish because it seems like it’s not enough. It’s not purposed to elevate or to promote us. More-over it causes decrease and regret in our lives and instead of bringing abundance, it creates scarcity. Satan will never present his form of a blessing with its side effects that can weigh heavily on our family, personal endeavors and walk in Christ. He’ll never give you a purpose, but typically a reason as to why it’s a must-have. But that fact of the matter is this, choose to serve God and receive everything He has in store for you. It is not deceiving or fraudulent and greater than anything you can ever image. Be wise and choose Him and receive the blessed hope which can only be found in Jesus Christ. Mark 13:21-23‑“Then if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or, ‘Look, He is there!’ do not believe it. For false christs and false prophets will rise and show signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. But take heed; see, I have told you all things beforehand.” (NKJV)

JAKES
She’s more than the soft-spoken voice that seems to emulate her sweet appearance which demands attention when speaking to a myriad of women at the annual Woman Thou Art Loosed Conference. She’s more than the humble and attentive wife who stands boldly beside her man, the influential Christian leader, Bishop T.D. Jakes. She’s passionate about ministry and believes in reaching the lost at any cost. She’s a preacher, teacher, mentor, wife and mother, but above all, she’s a powerful and anointed woman of God. She’s the First Lady of the Potter’s House, the phenomenal First Lady Serita Ann Jakes. Serita Jakes has been in ministry all of her adult life serving alongside her husband of more than 30 years. She compliments his ministry well with her a vast array of knowledge particularly in mass communications and theatrical studies —a stirring attribute about Jakes most admirers do not know. But now, Jakes is on an incredible mission ministering and touching the lives of thousands who have connected with her through her past memoirs and writings which have sold more than 200,000 copies. Her latest book, “The Crossing” recently hit the bookshelves and has created its own genre of ministry through media. To some, it would seem uncouth for the pastor’s wife and leading lady to challenge others to peruse the 283 page novel that is brimmed with the drama and suspense of murder, adultery, abuse and well, too much to list here. Yet, for the tens of thousands who have already read this page-turning novel, it’s ministry at its best. It’s a remedy for spiritual issues and concerns that have been long overdue for an antidote to our spiritually declining society. I sat down with the First Lady to find out what inspired her and how she believes this is a new era of ministry.
FL Jakes: I was born a coalminer’s daughter. I am a very country based, family oriented, plain, no-frills-no-thrills, lovehome-love-family type of person. That is who the real First Lady Serita Jakes is. But I have extraordinary opportunities
“
FL Jakes: Transparency immediately disarms a person and allows them to see my wounds, scars and mishaps. It lets them know I am a person too and just someone who has been given an extraordinary opportunity as I said before. Being transparent also allows a person to take off their mask and realize none of us are perfect, but through Christ we have an

personality where I like to take fictional stories and make them applicable to everyday occurrences. I feel that we preach to the choir, but there has to be a way we can go into the highways and byways and teach people about the love of God. It’s not bait and switch, but if they think they are reading a novel—they will find ministry. opportunity to correct the errors in our lives.
Of course, we all know your husband, Bishop T.D. Jakes. But how many years have you been in ministry yourself?
FL Jakes: When I met my husband he was already a pastor and we will have been married thirty years in May. So for two years prior to that I was a relatively new convert learning the grace, mercy and love of God on my own. I believe callings come long before we get popped out of our mommy’s belly. So there was a call on my life and no matter how hard I tried to sway from the past that was ordered for me, I always knew I was destined for ministry.
You keep mentioning the word “extraordinary.” Are there any specific events that come to mind?
FL Jakes: It’s when I think about thousands of people gathered in the Georgia Dome for MegaFest. Or the millions of people in Kenya sitting in trees and walking for days just to experience the love of God through my husband’s ministry. It’s the opportunity I have been given to walk beside a man I feel has been given to the world. All of this is extraordinary for me and coming from a coalminer’s daughter.
You’ve never seemed selfish with your husband. You’re eager to share him with the world. How do you help other woman understand the call on their spouse’s life and not feel as if she has to keep a close eye on him?
SA M
You’re not the typical First Lady. In fact, you’re one of the hardest working women in ministry. So, besides being the First Lady and a best-selling author, what other capacities do you serve in?
FL Jakes: Within our ministry, the Potter’s House, I am the director of the WoMan-to-Woman women’s ministry. I also have an enrichment program named after my husband’s book, “God’s Leading Ladies” where we empower woman every other Saturday to come out of the shadows of their lives and take center stage and the purpose that God has ordained for them. And while all of this is going on, in adjacent rooms I have programs for young girls 12-17 who have obtained academic excellence, yet living in the inner-city and perhaps have not been exposed to the arts, botanical gardens, public speaking and dressing for success. My passion evolves around mentoring women and young girls. I also have Rahab International Ministry that initially assisted women who were living the life style of street walkers, but now also consists of woman and children who have been affected and effected by domestic violence. One of the greatest qualities many who know you believe you to be a very transparent person. Is this important?
How do you encourage people to move forward in whatever their dream is, even if it means it’s outside the church?

that have been granted to a very ordinary woman.
FL Jakes: I labor with women who are wives of men in high-profile positions because with this stage comes a lot of people who would be attracted or drawn to them for the wrong reasons. But I found out early in our marriage that I had to trust the Holy Spirit in him and that it’s not my job to keep him. It’s my job to nurture him and to be his wife. But I am not his keeper and I am not his spiritual compass. And if the Holy Ghost can’t keep him, God knows Serita can’t. Let’s talk about your book, “The Crossing”. Why was it important for you to write this? Shouldn’t you be writing about principals of faith and tithing as some religious sectors might suggest? FL Jakes: This was my first novel. I’ve written several other books like the “Princess Within” and “Stand Beside Your Man”. But my novel stems from my background in theatre, speech and drama. Now, a lot of people may not realize that I am intricately involved in my husband’s stage plays and movies. So for me to be a novelist is just an offshoot from my own
FL Jakes: I believe every good and perfect gift comes from above. And how we utilize, exercise or open that gift is up to us. I believe the more creative you can be in this generation, the more applicable and relevant you become. This new generation and this high-tech generation does not have the time to listen to you preach a thirty minute sermon. So, in any way we can get the message to them of forgiveness, healing, love and redemption from your past mistakes, we have to do that. And I’m creative enough to take the risk to do it. Are you saying that in order for us to make a difference in the lives of people we have to be able to tap into areas that we may not be comfortable in? FL Jakes: Absolutely! I believe that by any means that is reachable—whether it’s print, stage or film— we have to get the message out. There are so many people in the “Crossing” who were devastated by events they had no control over. We have to teach people self-forgiveness and that you can overcome your past. Throughout the entire book you’ll find it’s laced with triggers that will almost make a person go back into a time warp where they will remember exactly what happened, what occurred and where they were at that moment. But what they didn’t realize is the same people that experienced the event at the crossing were also going through the same type of traumatic setbacks. Most of the characters were affected by the same past event. How do we help people who have been paralyzed by their past? FL Jakes: A lot of people who are paralyzed by their past have been too ashamed or they have been too embarrassed by what happened to them. They have labeled themselves according to the episode in their lives. And for fear of rejection or being ostracized, they won’t

ITS OK TO BE DIFFERENT
I have often wondered why a person would want to be like someone else. It may be due to a self esteem problem or an identity problem. But whatever the case may be, too many of us are trying to be like other people when God created us uniquely different on purpose.
It may be okay to impersonate in jest of for fun. However, we should never attempt to duplicate another person’s identity or personality. From the days of Adam and Eve there has always been an attack on the family unit and just as 1 Cor. 12 details the interdependent relationship of the people in the body of Christ, likewise a family unit without a head does not operate at its optimal level. I was personally reared in a home void of a proper father figure to teach me how to navigate through the stages of early childhood, adolescence and my youth. Yet, it was the men in the local church where I attended who first taught me what it really means to be a man after God’s own heart. It is so vital that churches implement outreach programs and ministries tailored to the specific and unique needs of men. But it is as equally important that men, like you and I become active and consistent in our churches and set the standard for other men who are in the sphere of our influence. Challenge yourself today. Will you take up the standard and help us lead the way? Or will you continue to standby and miss out on being the very best of who you truly are? WOMEN UNITE!
PL E
God called for the wailing and skillful women to come together and cry out because their prayers would be heard. (Jer. 9:17, 18). The women who were at ease were urged to rise (Isa. 32:9-12). They were urged to go beyond the norm and further than what was comfortable.

Women’s prayer and support groups and networking are essential. Joining forces empowers the collective (Matt.18:19). I can put 1,000 to flight, but together we can put 10,000 to flight (Deut. 32:30). Women unite in various ways.
Did you know we all have an Independence Day? The day we decided to break free from guilt, hurt, shame, defeat and depression that may have hindered us from living intentionally on purpose?
My independence day was in August 2006! I will never forget it. It was as if a huge load was taken off me. I made a decision that day to yield everything to a source higher than me. That source for me is God. From that day I have not been bound by my past upsets, disappointments, acts or lack thereof. FREE-living on purpose with purposeful intentions! John 8:36 says, “Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free.”
How do you celebrate your independence? Have you freed yourself? Freedom is possible when we yield our lives to God and fully rely on the power given to us through Jesus Christ to begin our emancipation!

God With Us
During the Christmas season, I’m reminded of a pastor who wanted to preach on “God is love” at
SA M
the end of 1 John 4:8. Yet, he explained to his congregation why he couldn’t preach on all of these words. He shared that “God” is an infinite “subject” and could never be reduced to one sermon. He also shared that “love” is a deep topic and could never be explored thoroughly in one message. So the pastor decided to preach on the word “is”!
So Joseph’s darkest night gave way to his brightest day. Isaiah first spoke the promise mentioned in Matthew 1:23 to king Ahaz. The king was troubled as he faced a military threat (Isa. 7:12), but God assured him that nothing was too hard for the Lord. God would deliver His people (Isa. 7:3-16). Of course, an angel reiterated the message of hope in Isaiah 7:14 to troubled Joseph. The ultimate fulfillment of God’s promise is the birth of Jesus who came to deliver us from the tyranny of sin through His death, burial, and resurrection.
This story comes to my mind at Christmas when I read Matthew 1:23. In this verse Matthew quotes a prophecy about Jesus’ birth from Isaiah 7:14: “‘Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,’ which is translated, ‘God with us.’” Just as the pastor above focused on the word “is” at the end of 1 John 4:8, I want us to focus on the word “with” in Matthew 1:23: “God with us.”
It’s hard for us to think of the Christmas story as Joseph and Mary first experienced it because we know how the story ends. However, when Joseph initially heard the news that Mary was pregnant, he didn’t hear a “hallelujah” chorus! He doubtlessly thought this was the worst day of his life. He thought of betrayal not blessing, sin not salvation, divorce not deliverance (Matt.1:19b). Yet, God had a message of hope for Joseph even in the midst of what he thought was a hopeless situation. An angel revealed that his perspective was wrong. The reality was not that Mary was being unfaithful to her pledge but rather that God was being faithful to His promise! Just as the Lord saw His people suffering and came down to deliver them from slavery, God was coming to “save His people from their sins” in the birth of Jesus (Matt. 1:21).
18 | SUMMER 2011 | WWW.RENEWEDMAGAZINEONLINE.COM
The holiday season is a difficult time for many people, but since Jesus is the reason for the season, He is hope for the hurting. Jesus is not “the means to an end.” He is the “means” and the “end”. He died for the sins of the whole world, and He rose again to give us a right-standing before God. All who look to Him in repentance and faith can experience the power of His salvation (John 3:14-18).
Have You Ever Tried Jesus?
Take the God’s Plan of Salvation insert and allow Christ to enter your heart and your life right now. The Steps to Salvation are EASY AS 1-2-3 (Roms. 10:9-10) 1. Confess that you are a sinner who needs to be saved. (1 Jh. 1:9) 2. Believe Jesus is God’s only begotten Son who lived, died and was ressurected for you. (Jh. 3:16) 3. Receive God’s free gift of salvation and Jesus as your life-long Lord and savior. (Roms. 6:23) YOU’RE SAVED!
tell the truth. But if you can find someone who you can open up your heart, mind and your story to and they not criticized, judge or belittle you, that’s the first key. That’s why I am so excited about the “Crossing” because there is ministry as well as remedy. I hate unresolved issues. So my answer or my solution for what happened at the crossing can be resolved at the cross. I believe perfect love casts out fear. I believe in the book just as it is written and I’m trying to compel everyone whether you are on a bus and your trigger is the sound of a horn or if you’re a little kid and your trigger is someone screaming or battering, you can find help at the cross.
don’t make it. Is it possible to people before it’s too late? FL Jakes: Unfortunately every story doesn’t have a happy ending. Cassio’s father was an abuser. Harper knew he was an abuser. Even her parents knew. How often do we sit back and watch our loved ones or our friends go through situations time after time and they tell us in the defense of the abuser that this time it’s going to be different and they don’t make it out of the situation? I think it is a warning that we need to take these situations a lot more seriously. We need to put on our listening ears. They are in our choirs and they are serving on our usher boards. They are on our hospitality committee and they are in our pulpits. We have to give a more earnest ear not to what key the song is in or how many times they modulate, but what is the pain going on in their lives.
PL E
Your epilogue states, “What starts at the cross ends at the cross.” Do you think sometimes we’re ministering to people but offer no remedy?
of communication that I have been involved in such as our e-magazine and through programs we have at our church, we’re offering solutions and we’re unashamedly, unapologetically Christians. And if you sit beside me in church you’re going to get a whole heaping dose of pleading the blood of Jesus because I believe it works. I believe the blood of Jesus will never lose it power. And I think if we can get beyond that fact that people find fault in leadership, but they found no iniquity in Christ. We’ve got our eyes on the wrong thing. What iniquity have we found in God? He’s spotless; He’s blameless and were following Him. We all fall down and we all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. But there is no iniquity in Jesus. None whatsoever.
FL Jakes: We do. We think that a lot of times we will get them to the altar and say Jesus three times and they hop on the right foot and hop on the left foot and then they go back to their seats unchanged. But at the Potter’s House we pour in ministry, and at the same time we have trained clinical professionals that can delve into the root cause of whatever that family or individual is experiencing.
One of the most memorable details in the characters’ lives is the sound of the train. What’s the significance?
FL Jakes: That’s one of the ministries we have and this is why it was so significant for me to write “The Crossing” that covers a span of 10 years in the characters lives. All of the things that have happened— Claudia gets married and has a child. But she is still finding out ten years later some of the things her perfect pastor’s wife of a mother was covering up. So everyone has a dark side. When the sun is shining there is always the moon behind it. So we have to learn how to except both sides of our personalities and submit it all to Jesus. He knows it anyway.
SA M
FL Jakes: I can almost trace it directly back to my childhood. One of the indicators of what time of day it was or what event was about to occur was the train. The sound of the train was always a trigger and you knew that it was time for the men to leave work or the last run of the day for people traveling. They would come into the depot during that time. So that to me is a trigger even now. Wherever I’ve lived, it’s been the blowing of a train’s horn that always placed me back in my youth.
Several characters struggle with generational curses such as Casio and his father. They both come from a lineage of abuse. How do we help someone who has a father who drinks or a mother who’s a prostitute and they think this is their future?
It also takes me back to Sunday school and church which has been a key element in my life. My uncle who raised me who wasn’t a believer, but he would make sure on Sunday morning I was up and ready to go to Sunday School. I feel that every problem can be resolved through the blood of Jesus. I just believe it.
GOD WITH US
The older saints were always pleading the blood of Jesus over everything: their homes, cars, family, even their bodies. But we don’t hear a lot of this anymore. We seek other remedies like medication and degrees. How do we get back to really focusing on the cross and understanding this is where our our salvation is?
FL Jakes: Not to be tooting my own horn—but “The Crossing” and other means
He’s walking through the garden and asks a rhetorical question to Adam, “Where are you”? He knew where he was but Adam had to admit to himself “I’ve messed up.” That is the first key to healing is admission. None of us are perfect. None of us have gotten it all together. Some of us have gotten it together just enough to tell somebody else where one beggar can get some bread. There are a few of your characters who
What can we expect from you in the near future? FL Jakes: I believe I will continue on the novel path. There will be a self help manual for “The Crossing” that will be released that has more clinical and ministerial applications. I am going to continue to tell these unsung and untold stories of the people that sit across from my desk and give voice to things that the church has somehow turned mute to. We‘ve got to talk about it because it’s real. I am so honored you would take the time to listen to my little story because it’s going to change many lives.

willing to let it go. Marriage is an uneven street that can sometimes seem to be leaning more to the other side than yours. Yet, the goal of any great marriage is to become one. This means putting aside your differences and learning to grow together. Ask yourself this question. Is what your spouse does really a sign of how thoughtless or insensitive he or she is? If you do not begin to let go of the “small stuff”, over time you can become critical and dishonoring to one another. Letting go can help make your life together more enjoyable and rewarding as God intended for it to be. When you feel like you are about to become irritated because of the “small stuff”, or you sense that you are getting ready to send your partner an invitation to argue, take some time out. Ask yourself whether or not the issue is really worth it. Think about all the good things your spouse does to honor you and make you feel special. Start encouraging and praising your spouse more and be grateful for the union God has joined. Don’t allow the strategy of the enemy to separate what God has connected. Put more effort into helping your partner and doing things to make your partner feel special. These positive steps can help you get over the “small stuff”. You’ll love the outcome.
“Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate” (Mark 10:9).

It was September 2000 and I was attending a birthday party for my Pastor’s daughter. I was there with some friends e one of which happened to be my hussaid band’s brother. Unbeknownst to me, he would become my brother-in-law. A short while later I had to leave. James was driving up and he almost crashed his Toyota because he was looking so hard. He tried to make it seem as though he wasn’t sure he was at the right address, so he asked if this was “V’s” birthday party. I said yes and continued walking. He quickly put the car in reverse and tried to make small talk. But I was not at all interested. And even if I was, (and I wasn’t), do you think I would show it at the Pastor’s house? After the party, he asked what church I went to and walked me out to my car. I felt this would be the last time I saw him, but then one day he showed up at my church. He sat in the front of the sanctuary watching me from across the aisle. Still uninterested, I had my mind on the service. James visited our church a few more times and then finally I took some time to really talk to him. He asked if he could call me after my much resistance. But I eventually gave him my phone number and the rest is HISstory.

She is right. We did meet in September 2000 and it was at the birthday party. However, she was one scoping me out. She had her eyes on me. So, I entertained her. I was quite elated because I thought an older woman was interested in me. I mean older in the sense she was hanging out with some friends who were in their late 40’s and 50’s. She had her hair pinned up and looked like a school teacher. Classy! I thought. I was sitting down and she came over to me and began chatting. I was thinking to myself this might be God’s design. Eventually, she had to leave, but I certainly didn’t back down the driveway to talk. She needed directions and I simply offered them. She had no idea where she going and I was only helping. After she returned and the party was over, I walked her to her car and asked for her number. She hesitated a little, but she gave it to me. Now, the rest is HERstory.
