Wedding Dress Shopping …has its own traditions These days, almost anything goes for wedding attire. Some people choose barefoot and bathing suits on a sundrenched beach. Others may create a theme with wacky outfits to match. Regardless of the fads and far out ideas, the traditional wedding dress is still the mainstay for many brides of all ages and cultural diversity. We’ve asked wedding dress professionals for tips on how to ensure you get the dress of your dreams. Once you’ve already decided what you’re looking for in a wedding dress, you’re ready to find and make it yours. To

make shopping for your wedding dress fun, easy and painless, don’t wear out your shoes walking from store to store in hopes the dress will magically appear. Start with a plan.

decide when to shop You can’t start looking too early, but you can be too late. Remember that it could take several months for your dress to be ordered and shipped. After it arrives, you’ll still need several weeks for your seamstress to complete alterations. Rule of thumb, start shopping about nine months before your wedding, sooner if you can. But don’t make the mistake of buying right away. “The last thing you want is to think you have your dream dress a year before your wedding only to find out that your real dream dress has just been created.”

Your budget may play the biggest role in determining where you will shop. Will you shop at chains or small boutiques? How far will you travel to see a dress? If you want an expensive designer dress, you may have to travel to a major city to actually try it on. However, if you look, you’re sure to find quality shops nearby. Bigger cities offer a variety of shops and boutiques, which will carry gowns from a number of designers, but be prepared to pay for labels. Online shopping is a growing option but be careful. Make sure your dress is sized correctly. This is best done by actually trying it on, which is an option you won’t have. And, if you’re not careful, you could seriously regret your decision and spend double the money buying a new one. Though many dress shops don’t ask for an appointment, it’s still best to make one anyway. That way you won’t have to wait around for an hour while the consultant helps other customers ahead of you. People with appointments will always come first. Chain stores may not provide the same level of personal service as a boutique, but those stores will always have another location somewhere nearby, and you can always go to the other one. Some shops will not let you browse freely through the gowns. They’ll ask you for a description of what you’re looking for and then bring you gowns they think match it. If you would rather see everything yourself, it’s best to call and ask first. If there is one near you, big box stores are excellent places to find gowns. They offer dresses to fit every budget, and will usually let you browse through the gowns as long as you want and try on as many as you want. “To save money and avoid having a dress hanging around that you will never wear twice, consider renting a wedding dress. It’s the economical alternative. Men almost always rent tuxedos - why not rent your wedding dress too?”

Take a few snapshots

of the dresses you love the most so you can keep a record of them. Otherwise it will be impossible to remember the details of every dress you try on. Having photos helps you remember and compare them later so you can narrow down your choice. If you can’t take photos, keep a list of the designer and dress number or name so you can look them up online and save photos that way.

Remember to pace yourself

and silhouettes, but don’t rule out gowns of a specific type because they don’t have every detail you want. You can always have it altered. A good seamstress can do wonders but remember that seamstresses often charge a whole lot for little things, so if you want to change many things about your gown, you may be better off continue your search. Also keep in mind that most of the time, the same dress can be ordered in various colors. Don’t pass up a dress just because it’s stark white and you want champagne, check to see if it’s available in champagne.

Don’t let anyone talk you into anything.

This is not about a consultant’s commission, it’s about you and your dress to look beautiful. Some sales people will have a genuine interest in helping you find the dress of your dreams. But don’t take a chance, and stick to your own opinion and that of the people you take with you.

Don’t be discouraged

Trying on dresses can turn into a time-consuming experience, and it can also be a workout, so make sure you bring a bottle of water or other hydrating beverage. Just be sure to keep it away from the dresses. Bring photos of dresses you found online or in magazines, if you have any. Even if they’re dresses made by another designer, the shop you’re in may be able to help you look for something similar. A lot of chains have styles that look like dresses by an expensive designer as a cheaper alternative for brides with smaller budgets.

Bring your accessories,

such as shoes, veil, or jewelry. If you plan to wear it on your wedding day, you’ll want to make sure the dress you choose goes well with it. Keep in mind this might narrow your options.

Do some research

‌so you know what you are looking for. Look at choices for length, sleeve style, necklines, waistlines, and trains. Check what’s possible for certain fabrics

It’s normal to try on many, many gowns during your search. It’s better than making a rash decision you’ll regret later. You may even find your dream dress shortly after you start looking, but it’s most likely something you’ll realize later, after looking through many other dresses that didn’t compare to the one you found in the beginning. Expect to try on anywhere between 30 and 150 dresses before finding the final one. Some women try on hundreds. “It’s normal to shop for months and try on many dresses before you find the one that is right for you.

It pays to shop around When you find the dress you want to wear on your special day, take time to shop around for competitive prices before you make your purchase. You might even find the dress you want on sale for considerably less than full retail.

Remember to have fun!

This is a magical time in your life when you get to try on as many exquisite and expensive dresses as you want. You’ll be the center of attention (at least among your group at the shop) and people will treat you with special kindness because you’re a beautiful bride. Have fun!

Mr. & Mrs. Cole

Casandra (Casey) MacDonald and Daniel (Danny) Cole joined together in marriage on August 30th, 2014 with family and friends in an outdoor ceremony near Stony Plain, Alberta. The bride is the eldest daughter of Jack & Lorraine MacDonald and grew up in the Ottawa Valley just outside of Eganville. The groom, the youngest son of Barry & Edith Cole is from Spruce Grove, Alberta, where the couple currently reside with their two sons, Isaiah (8) & Andrew (5). They met at a recording studio where Danny was working and Casey was visiting. The rest is history, when a year later Danny arrived in Ontario and they trekked across Canada together from Casey’s home at Mac’s Ce-dar-est to Edmonton, where they began their lives together. The rings that the couple exchanged, were handcrafted by Touchwood Rings in BC and along with crushed abalone shell from Cozumel and quartz from Algonquin Park, they incorporated cedar from the MacDonald land near Whitetail Golf Club. The dress was designed by the Bride and made from felt and silk, created by Judith Dios who is also from British Columbia. The dÊcor was a funky outdoor Bohemian vibe with multi coloured ags hanging from the massive tent poles, hand-painted signs throughout the grounds, mason jars, blue glass, cedar and sunowers; many grown by the couple and the rest harvested by the bridal party the day before the wedding. Prior to the wedding the couple had a pre-honeymoon in the Bahamas where they went on a Yoga/Wild Dolphin adventure retreat. Danny & Casey Cole along with their parents would like to thank everyone who attended and especially all of those that travelled a great distance to celebrate with them as well as all of their wedding party and family for their tremendous support.

You’ll definitely want an opinion you can trust. But don’t make the mistake of taking your mother, your maid of honour, your bridesmaid, your other bridesmaid, and your other bridesmaid’s little sister. Not only will they get in the way, but none of them will agree on anything. Most likely, at least one of them won’t like whatever dress you’re trying on. It’s best to take one person (or maybe two, like your mother and maid of honor), whose opinion you trust and value.

Wedding ring tradition has changed over the ages Wearing a wedding ring has been a symbol of love and devotion for centuries. In most western cultures, it’s worn on the fourth finger of the left hand, aptly known as the ring finger. Though wedding rings also represent a multibillion dollar business, there are many differing beliefs on when this age old tradition actually started. Some suggest the oldest recorded exchange of wedding rings was in ancient Egypt, about 4,800 years ago. Sedges, rushes and reeds were twisted and braided into rings for fingers as well as other decorative

accessories worn by the women of the day. The circle has long been known as a symbol of eternity, with no beginning or end, in many ancient cultures, including Egypt. The hole in the center of the ring also had significance. It wasn’t just considered a space, but rather a gateway, or door; leading to things and events both known and unknown. To give a woman a ring signifies never-ending and immortal love. Braided rings of reeds didn’t last very long and

soon were substituted with rings made of leather, bone or ivory. The more expensive the material, the more love shown to the receiver; the value of the ring also demonstrated the wealth of the giver. The Romans eventually adopted the ring tradition but with a twist of their own. Instead of giving a ring to a woman as a symbol of love, they used them to signify ownership. Roman men would “claim” their woman with the giving of a ring. Roman betrothal rings were later made of iron and called “Anulus Pronubus.” They symbolized strength and

permanence. It is also said that the Romans were the first to engrave their rings. It was not until about 860 A.D. that Christians used rings in marriage ceremonies. It was not the simple plain band of today, but was usually highly decorated with engraved doves, lyres, or two linked hands. The Church discouraged decorative rings as being ‘heathenish’ and, around the 13th century, wedding and betrothal rings were considerably simplified. With a simple, more spiritual look rings became known as a “symbol of the union of hearts.”

The Vein of Love Throughout history wedding rings have been worn on different fingers, even the thumb, and on both the left and right hands. A tradition believed to have come from Roman times says the wedding ring is worn on the left hand ring finger because it was thought that a vein in the finger, known as the ‘Vena Amoris’ or the ‘Vein of Love’ was directly connected to the heart. Science has since proven this to be false. Regardless of the facts of anatomy, the myth is still regarded by many hopeful romantics as the number one reason rings are worn on the fourth finger. There are other theories behind the ring being worn on the left hand. Early Christian marriages had a ritual to wear the wedding ring in the third finger. As a priest recited during the binding ,”

In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit”, he would take the ring and touch the thumb, the index finger, and the middle finger; then, while uttering “Amen”, he would place the ring on the ring finger, which sealed the marriage. A more practical theory is that the soft metal (traditionally gold for wedding rings) gets less wear and tear on the third finger of the left hand as most of the world is right handed. The fourth finger on the left hand is probably the least used finger on a person’s hands. The smallest finger, the pinkie, provides less surface area to decorate, which may have motivated people to use the next finger, which is roughly the size of the other fingers.

Make your engagement photoshoot a success Engagement photos vary depending on the couple. Often reserved for save-the-date cards and now commonly used to spruce up wedding websites, engagement photos can range from formal shoots in which couples are dressed to the nines to more laid back shots featuring couples in more everyday attire.

to. Once couples have settled on a style for their photoshoot, there are additional ways to ensure the session is a success.

When planning an engagement shoot, couples should give themselves carte blanche with regard to style, as the photoshoot need not follow many of the more accepted rules that the wedding itself will ultimately adhere

• Find a photographer who shares your sensibilities. Photographers can vary greatly in style, and an engagement photoshoot will be most successful when couples find a photographer whose style matches the theme they are looking for with their photoshoot. You likely would not hire a nature photographer to photograph a basketball game, so don’t hire someone who

specializes in posed shots if you want your photos to be more lively and spontaneous. Before you hire anyone, ask for samples of each photographer’s work to be certain you’re getting someone who has experiencing shooting the type of photos you want to take. • Solicit ideas from the photographer. Some couples already know exactly where they want their engagement photos to be shot and which poses they want to be arranged. However, many couples have little or no experience with professional

• Avoid studio shots. Many couples prefer their engagement photos be taken somewhere they have a personal connection to, such as the sight of their first date or a park they frequently visit. Studio photoshoots might provide the best lighting, but couples have no connection to such spaces, and down the road they may regret not taking the photos in someplace that’s a little more meaningful. In addition, a photoshoot outside the studio affords couples and their photographer more opportunities to experiment and improvise, which can produce a wider array of shots than a studio photoshoot is likely to deliver. • Don’t forget candid shots. Candid shots make the photoshoot more fun and loosen couples up a little bit. Many engagement photos will never be seen by anyone other than the photographer and the couple he or she is shooting, so don’t be bashful during candid shots for fear of being embarrassed down the road. Have fun with the candid shots, and your other photos are likely to come out better as a result.

photoshoots, and such couples should solicit ideas from each photographer they are considering hiring. A skilled and/or seasoned photographer should propose several ideas. Be wary of photographers who offer little input, as you may ultimately be dissatisfied with their work once the shoot has come and gone.

An engagement photoshoot should be fun and reflect the personalities of the couple. A few simple strategies can ensure couples’ shoots accomplish both of those things.

Many agencies offer separate packages for couples who want one photographer and couples who prefer two or more photographers, so it pays to examine the price differences between such packages to see if more than one photographer can fit into your budget. Though fathers and their daughters can choose whatever song they'd like for their special dance together, the following are some of the more popular songs for this special event.

Mr. & Mrs. Morris

Mr. & Mrs. Haselhan

On July 12, 2014, after being together for eight years, Krystal McCallum and Mitchell Haselhan were married at the bride’s childhood home on McCallum Drive. The bride was lead down the aisle by their two beautiful children, Isabella and Liam, and Krystal’s father Stuart. Special thanks to the bride and groom’s parents, and all the family and friends who travelled from the West to join them in their special day. Being married at dusk on a beautiful hot summer night surrounded by their loved ones was the perfect way for them to share their love with everyone. R0013108361

On September 19th 2014 at 6:00pm Natalie Heather Turcotte and Christopher Donald Morris were united in marriage by Mr. Keith Langly at Lago Bar and Grill in Ottawa. It was a beautiful crisp September day for their cocktail style wedding. The bride and groom planned this style of wedding to give their guests the opportunity to mingle and socialize without the restraint of having a sit down dinner. The theme was baseball, with yellow and grey accents, which perfectly complimented the bride and grooms style. Friends and family partied the night away until the last song was played. The couple was accompanied by two attendants each. Natalie’s matron of honor was her cousin Melissa Ryan and her closest friend Jodie Pascal served as bridesmaid. Chris’s best friend Matthew Brozincevic was his best man and his groomsman was his younger brother Nick Morris. Natalie & Chris wish to thank everyone from near and far who were able to attend and make their special day so wonderful. They spent their honeymoon in California over Thanksgiving and to no surprise they took in a major league play-off baseball game!
