As in war, so go the Remembrance Day services in Calabogie. For years, the services took place in cold, unfriendly weather conditions, but Sunday was not one of those days. With the sun shining brightly and a pleasant wind blowing in off Calabogie Lake, more than 250 people gathered to pay their respects during the annual service. Participants included dozens of members of the public, as well as members of Canadian Army Veteran (CAV) motorcycle units, the Renfrew Highland Pipes and Drums, the 653 air cadets squadron, members of the Renfrew Royal Canadian Legion, and close to 100 soldiers from Canadian Forces Base Petawawa’s Artillery Regiment’s D Battery. Hank Schaly, who led the singing of the national anthem and hymns Lead On, O King Eternal and Eternal Father Strong to Save, also shared a remembrance poem about a Canadian soldier. Another participant was Pastor Bill Griffiths. He reminded the gathering, in his address, that the wise man doesn’t boast in his wisdom, but rather for understanding and knowing God, and therefore exercises kindness, judg-
ment and righteousness while living on this Earth. Before an audience that came to remember the contributions of soldiers who gave their time, if not their lives, to defend this and other countries, he said, “We are justifiably proud of those who have served and are serving with honour, of those who put their lives on hold, of those who put their own safety and well-being in second place and went to serve on foreign soil. “And we gather in this place today to remember those – both military and civilian – who paid the ultimate price; even down to this past month with the loss of our 158th soldier (in Afghanistan), at the hands of a suicide bomber acting in a part of the world to which most of us will never go.” Pastor Griffiths went on to say that war is not the only crisis in the world, as he referred to crises of economic, social and political proportions and how Canada has been “blessed beyond measure with vast resources, stable government, and a fair and just society that provides equal opportunity for everyone.” Such a blessing, however, he said, “comes with the awesome task of using that blessing in ways that improve the lives of those who are struggling.” See ‘A TIME’, Page 2
