STEVE NEWMAN steve.newman@metroland.com
THE STRONGEST MAN Dave Droeske, 22, was the runaway winner in the Arnprior Fair’s strongest man’s competition held Sunday. Here he opens with a win in the 600-pound super yoke walk. He also won the next four events to capture the title in convincing fashion. For details, see Page 14. Mercury photo by Steve Newman
LOTS OF ACCIDENTS
It was a busy week for the Renfrew detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police. Last week the OPP dealt with 27 motor vehicle accidents, including this one between Kellys Corner and Douglas.

The demise of Canadian Pacific’s railway line could be to the advantage of Renfrew County tourism and recreation. Renfrew County officials aren’t divulging the contents of any plan to develop the abandoned railway bed, whose rails and other equipment may be all salvaged within two years. That salvage process began last week. But the county’s recent request to have first right of refusal (to purchase the abandoned CP line running from Smiths Falls to Mattawa) could result in a trail network that improves all-terrain vehicle, snowmobile and cycling networks in the county. Renfrew County CAO Jim Hutton announced, at Monday’s public works committee meeting, that the county’s point man regarding future use of the railway bed will be development and property director Paul Moreau.
