As we welcome 2015, we pause to look back on 2014. Last year at this time nominations were opened for the 2014 municipal elections in October, and when the dust settled Horton Township mayor Don Eady had won the top seat in neighbouring Renfrew. He defeated incumbent councillors Tom Anderson and Jim Miller, and Cal Scott, in the race for mayor. Greater Madawaska mayor Peter Emon also made a move to Renfrew and topped long-time Renfrew reeve and former mayor Audrey Green to return to County Council as Renfrew’s representative. Weeks later he was acclaimed as county warden for another year. Other candidates successful in the race for a seat at the Renfrew council table were incumbent councillor Andrew Evans, former councillor Kate Windle, and newcomers Mike Coulas, Tom Sidney and Arlene Jamieson. New leadership was also welcomed in neighbouring townships with new mayors Bob Kingsbury in Horton, Michael Donohue in Admaston-Bromley, Tom Peckett in McNab-Braeside, Hal Johnson in Whitewater Region and Glenda McKay in Greater Madawaska.

Town of Renfrew greets new year with new accountant-deputy treasurer Lucy Hass

Lucy.hass@metroland.com

News - At the first business meeting of Renfrew council last month, Mayor Don Eady was ready to roll up his sleeves and get to work. “We’re getting ready to get to work. We have a job ahead of us,” said Eady, “and a lot of talent and experience.’ position filled

Kelly Coughlin has been hired as Renfrew’s new accountant-deputy treasurer. The incumbent Valerie Jahn retired in December and under delegated executive authority the position

was declared vacant, advertising undertaken, an interview and screening conducted, then an offer made to fill the position internally. Jahn was employed in municipal work for almost 33 years and through 14 municipal elections. “We wish her all the very best in retirement,” said treasurer Keray O’Reilly. Coughlin assumed her new job Monday, Dec. 22, causing a ripple effect and leaving the town to fill her previous position as revenue compensation clerk in the treasury department. Her duties included handling all payroll, short-term disability management, plus water readings and reconciliations. “It is a key position,” O’Reilly said.

Renfrew’s water quality technician Darl Gaudette has also retired. In 2008 a number of staff changes were made in the department of development and works and a water quality technician position created. Director of development and works Mike Asselin said the CUPE unionized position is a very unique one, requiring very specific skills and qualifications. The Ontario Clean Water Agency may be brought in to do some training. Asselin said the new council will be educated on its “standard of care” obligations associated with class 4 water treatment and wastewater treatment.

winter maintenance

mac’s milk demolition

Renfrew council has entered into an agreement with the County of Renfrew for winter maintenance of County Road 20 (Bruce Street) and Raglan Street South within the town limits. Director Asselin said the agreement between the two organizations makes a lot of sense and provides motorists with a consistent level of service. Last year the county paid $6,700 per kilometre, as part of a three-year contract. The new one-year contract sees an increase to $7,000 per kilometre, paid in two payments.

Council has been advised that demolition has begun at the Mac’s Milk property at the corner of Hall and Raglan Streets. Major redevelopment is planned at the convenience store, with the adjacent building on Raglan slated for demolition. When the new building is complete, the old one will be removed. When it appeared costs would be potentially higher than anticipated the owner returned to the town to seek minor site plan modifications. Drainage and landscaping are expected to improve the site, and the changes received unanimous approval.

BOXINGWEEK

Major work was done on an Admaston-Bromley pumper truck No. 4, Coun. Dick added. Three new bunker suits have also arrived for the firemen. Fire chief Terry McHale was notified by Enbridge Gas that the fire department was the winner of an Enbridge draw for safety material valued at $5,000. “It is not money,” Coun. Dick stressed. “It’s for fire safety material provided. We can use up to that much (amount) for fire prevention.” It can be used for educating at schools and for other things, the councillor added. Association memberships

Council has authorized staff to maintain its membership with six associations: the Ottawa Valley Tourist Association (OVTA – annual membership fee of $226), Renfrew and Area Chamber of Commerce ($50), Ontario Good Roads Association (OGRA – $680), Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO – $1,425), Renfrew County Roads Superintendents

($110) and Renfrew County Clerks and Treasurers Association ($100 plus $15 per person per meeting, usually four meetings a year). “These are the ones that every year we’ve been a part of,” clerk-treasurer Annette Louis said. The OVTA provides free advertising on their website and on the road map that they put out during the year, Louis explained. The OGRA sends information to Road Superintendent Chris Kunopaski as well as discounts for conferences. They also take on legal issues, Kunopaski noted. AMO offers the same, with information and discounts, Louis said. Kunopaski is a member of the Renfrew County Roads Superintendents, while Louis and deputy clerk-treasurer Sean Crozier are members with the county’s clerks and treasurers association, which allows them to keep on the same page with the rest of Renfrew County.

News - Councillor Robert Dick, chairman of the Douglas Fire Committee, reported on protective services to Admaston-Bromley council Dec. 18. The committee met with the OPP in regards to communication during emergencies. The road closure issue was addressed in the wake of a couple of incidents last summer when roads were closed and the fire and road departments were not aware. “When they close a road, emergency services don’t know that. They have to take another route and every minute counts,” Coun. Dick said. He encouraged the parties to talk more and work on improving communications. Accident scenes and explanations why fire trucks were turned away were also discussed. The senior person from the fire department is to seek out the investigating officer if they are told they are not needed at the scene.

Areas of expertise were recognized. It was strongly stressed that this is not a power struggle, Coun. Dick said. Common sense needs to rule, Coun. Dick is looking forward to a positive and co-operative working relationship with emergency services and the OPP. “I want to commend both our fire department and our police department,” Mayor Michael Donohue said. “Everyone is working towards the same end. The way to overcome issues (and) obstacles is simply dialogue between our emergency services.” Mayor Donohue suggested perhaps the OPP and the township’s emergency services meet on an annual or semi-annual basis. “This sort of information exchange is very valuable for everybody, to know what everybody’s role is in an emergency.” Coun. Dick also informed council that two dry fire hydrants have been installed, one on Lynch Road and a second at the dam in Douglas.

OPINION EDITORIAL

Generosity wonderful, but governments should help too

I

t’s heart-warming to see the community rally around local charities this time of year. Renfrew and area is indeed full of caring, generous citizens. Organizations such as the Salvation Army and the volunteers at the Renfrew and District Food Bank are offering a commendable service, helping the most vulnerable in our midst enjoy Christmas too. They provide a valuable vehicle through which a community can share the wealth and give those in need a welcome boost. That generosity can have a variety of positive results, especially if it helps children overcome poverty and disappointment. If children are steered away from lifetimes of ill health, despair and crime that poverty can provoke, then we all benefit. There are also other worthy causes being championed by various community groups. It’s marvellous that they are taking up the challenge and raising donations for these causes, for without them the community would be much the poorer. However, it begs the question: if these needs are so important, why aren’t our governments helping out more. Take Valley Heritage Radio’s Holly Jolly Telethon. Whoever decided to choose suicide

prevention as this year’s charity deserves hearty congratulations. It’s not the usual charity one would have expected the radio station to take on, but it embraced the cause with its usual combination of high spirits and thoughtful commentary. It was an inspiring and informative four hours of programming. But it’s unfortunate that the Renfrew County Suicide Prevention and Crisis Centre doesn’t receive at least some government funding to help it with its crucial work. The good people at the counselling centres won’t turn anyone away, so they don’t receive government help because there would be too many strings attached. From health care to homelessness, the need for government support is clear. And then there’s the fight to eradicate child poverty. It’s marvellous to see the local schools and companies partner with the Renfrew County Children’s Poverty Action Network. Good for them. But in such a prosperous nation as Canada, it’s a disgrace that some children start life at such a disadvantage because of poverty. Community efforts to help are appreciated, but it’s our governments that should be doing more to address such a fundamental imbalance.

COMMENTARY

Mother’s superstitions extended to New Year’s visitors Lifestyle - As far as Father was concerned the whole idea was pure nonsense. Imagine! Not letting anyone through the door of the house on New Year’s day, until somebody entered who was fair of hair, and preferably fair of skin. But Mother was adamant. She had talked about it so much, that I was sure if a black-haired neighbour came knocking, he would be left standing in the cold until, as Father said, “hell froze over.” And so, I silently prayed that Uncle Alec would come across the 20-acre field that New Year’s day before anyone with black hair made a call. His fair hair

was streaked with silver, and I was sure he would be welcomed in as our first visitor of the New Year. But that was unlikely. It had been snowing for three days, and everyone on the Northcote side road was pretty well stuck in their own homes.

Now, the reason Mother said it was of the utmost importance that someone fair of head be the first through the door on New Year’s Day, was that she knew for a fact if our first visitor was one with black hair it was a sure sign that the entire year ahead would be one of doom, gloom, and very likely send all of us to the poor house. But if someone with fair hair and skin was the first through the door, then the coming year would be one of prosperity and good health. And that is the reason that year, when New Year’s Eve came and passed, and no visitor had come to call, at the crack of dawn on New Year’s Day, Mother climbed the stairs, clomped by Audrey’s

and my bed in her homemade felt slippers, on her way to the back bedroom, and shook Everett from a deep sleep. Even Father had yet to climb out of bed, it was so early. “Everett, you have to get dressed and go outside and come back in before your Father sets out for the barns,” she said in a loud whisper that could be heard through the entire upstairs. Everett was the only one in the family as fair as a lily, with a swatch of blond hair, poker straight, but at least it wasn’t black or red like the rest of us in the family! Poor Everett. He knew exactly what he had to do.

Community - Eight teams of four competed at duplicate bridge in the Swiss Teams format Dec. 17 at the MaTe-Way Activity Centre. Members were pleased with the appearance of Renfrew Mayor Don Eady who extended congratulations to the duplicate bridge club for its successful initial year. He wished the organization continued success at the Activity Centre in 2015. A recreation that draws 25 to 50 people on a regular weekly basis is a plus for the town in many ways, he pointed out. Mayor Eady even dropped a hint that he himself might try to enliven dormant bridge skills in the New Year.

The only slam of the afternoon was a six no trump contract by Mona Brydges and Diaan Juby. They trounced their hapless opponents. Congratulations to the following winning teams: • 1st: Leanne Cheliak, Sheila Perras, Bob Bouchard, Garry Irving; • 2nd: Gwen Latendresse, Anna McCallum, Eleanor Thompson, Sheila Duke; • 3rd: Yolande Baillon, Bette Rowe, Dan Baran, Jeannie Yagminas. Start time for duplicate bridge is 1 p.m. The next playdate is Jan. 7 when Chalk Talks will also re-convene. Partners are provided for those who come early. Birds that are rare in winter

Birds that are very rare in winter

All the birds that are considered to be rare and very rare have been seen in the area. They are exciting birds to see and hear. Peregrine falcons, bald and golden eagles top the list of very rare species followed by, red-tailed and roughlegged hawks, great gray owls, hawk owls, snowy owls, saw-whet owls and Boreal owls. They are large birds that hunt from high perches that make them a bit easier to see. Rubycrowned kinglets, Boreal chickadees and European goldfinches round out the list. The latter are small birds that are difficult to find especially the king-

lets as they are not feeder birds. Our very rare owls migrate from the Arctic (except the saw-whet owl) when the lemming (a small rodent) population crashes, about every five to seven years. Northern owls are daylight hunters and remain active during the day. They are tolerant of people because to them we are just another muskox, something they are familiar with and unafraid of. A very rare bald eagle

Ron and Brenda Golden had a bald eagle arrive at their home a week before Christmas. The bird has been seen perching in the same tree on a few occasions. Ron said that is a very majestic bird the white head and tail, yellow bill and upright posture on a perch make it stand out. In flight there is no mistaking the long, broad wings and white head and tail. Blue jay problems

The 24 blue jays at Joe Kleiboer’s feeders on the Matawatchan Road are causing a problem for other birds and, Joe says, they are eating everything he puts out. Jays will take sunflower seed and toss the rest on the ground unless there are peanuts. He wondered if we had any suggestions that might help him keep feeding the smaller birds and yet feed the blue jays as well. Several years ago we had the same problem and solved it when I found a wire bird cage at the landfill site. I modified it so that only the small birds could enter the cage where the sunflower seed was in a silo feeder. The blue jays were fed at another feeder away from the bird cage. Joe is going to try to find a cage if not he says he will make one. Cardinal action

Currently have an over abundance of blue jays. But the consolation is that I

Lifestyle - When we are wondering if a bird we see is rare we must ask ourselves, “How often have I seen this bird before.” If we are birders, hikers or have lived in an area for several years and have never seen such a bird before or have seen it only a few times we should consider it rare or very rare. Hundreds of finches will feed in a small area because seeds are plentiful and we see them often. Birds of prey require an area a great deal larger because their food (other birds and animals) is not as plentiful and is usually scattered over many acres and we seldom see them.. Even rare species are sometimes numerous in any given year because of the availability of food. American kestrels, Cooper’s and sharp-shinned hawks, great-horned owls, long-eared owls, shorteared owls, barred owls and Eastern screech owls are rare at any time. Both black-backed and three-toed woodpeckers (although they were common when the Dutch elm disease killed most of our elm trees and digging nest holes was easier), goldencrowned kinglets and Lapland longspurs are rare in winter. The owls are year-round residents but most feed at night and are more often heard than seen.

The Renfrew Mercury - Thursday, January 1, 2015 13

Mary Cook Continued from page 8

By this time Father was up and dressed, and Mother’s next challenge was to make sure if he went to the barns, he wouldn’t set foot in the house before Everett, because his black hair was sure to send us all into the poor house, and we’d become afflicted with goodness knows any number of ailments during the coming year! Everett still full of sleep, crawled into his overalls, pulled on his socks, and headed for the kitchen. I followed him downstairs, and he looked for all the world like he was about to fall over, still only half awake. He didn’t even bother to put on his coat or hat, just slammed his feet into his gumrubbers, opened the back door, stepped out onto the snow covered stoop, turned around and walked right back into the

kitchen, shucked off his boots and headed back upstairs. It certainly looked like it wasn’t the first time he had done the job! With daylight just starting to creep in, the kitchen had an eerie glow, and to me it seemed like the middle of the night.  I sat in the rocking chair by the stove, where Father sat to read the Ottawa Farm Journal, as I tried to warm up in the still ice-cold house. I heard Father stomping his feet on the outside step, and saw him slowly open the kitchen door, looking down at Everett’s footsteps in the snow.  Figuring it was safe to come in, he shook his head, as if to say, “well, that’s over for another year.” The New Year’s ritual wasn’t the only one of Mother’s concerns when it came to signs and omens...such as a toss of salt over her left shoulder if some was spilled

from the shaker; a dropped dishcloth stayed on the floor until someone other than the person who dropped it picked it up.  It was often hard for me, at such a young age to tell if something was a good or a bad sign. All I know is that, regardless of the signs or omens Mother believed in, and which Father said were the craziest notions he ever heard of, none of them did much to ease the hardships of those Depression years all around us out in Renfrew County. Note: May I take this opportunity to wish each and every one of you God’s richest blessing for the coming year. Wolves run down Rams and Mustangs Second draw champs crowned Peter Clark

Andy Sklepowicz

Sports - The Renfrew Timberwolves haven’t officially clinched first place in the Valley Division of the Eastern Ontario Junior Hockey League. But with a seven-point edge on the Stittsville Rams, their nearest rival in the standings, the Wolves have gone a long way toward nailing down top spot in the regular season. The Wolves, at 20-5-1-and-1, own 42 points. The 17-9-0-and-1 Rams have 37. The two teams do have three meetings left against each other.

Sports - The end of the year is also the end of the second draw for most of the leagues at the Renfrew Curling Club and the results are now coming in. In the Tuesday afternoon ladies league the team of Yvonne Sklepowicz, Susan Hanniman, Cathy O’Donnell and Judy Gracie finished atop of the Ladies second draw. In the Wednesday night skins league the team of Cliff Valleau, Don Lowe, Dave Anderson and Lee Sharpe defeated the Rob Warren rink and swept all honours. In consolation play, the Yvonne Sklepowicz foursome with Russ Connors, Brian Thiessen and Larry Visneskie outdrew the Ed Lepack quartet for the win. In the Thursday afternoon league the team of Rob Warren, Anne MacNeil, Louise Jamieson and Roy Leitch captured the second draw with a 4-1 record with the Leo McCallum/Yvonne Sklepowicz rink a close second. This weekend sees the playdowns for the Best Western Challenge featuring Renfrew’s Barb Westgarth rink and the Yvonne Sklepowicz team on the ladies’ side while the Fairmont Challenge has our local lads skipped

Scott Conroy and Nolan Rook scored goals in quick fashion to open the second period, and Blair Barr notched his first as a Timberwolf early in the third to lift the Wolves past Stittsville 3-2 Friday, Dec. 19. Mike DiBello in the second period, and Clay Carter with 5:14 left in the third, kept Stittsville in contention. Carter’s goal came after the Wolves missed a chance on a two-man advantage to put the game away. Conroy snapped a drive past Rams netminder Matt Couvrette 26 seconds into the middle period to snap a scoreless deadlock. Rook then one-timed a centring feed home just over two minutes later for a 2-0 Renfrew lead. Colin Bradbury and Lucas Gonu assisted on both goals. Matt Gagne was sharp in the Wolves goalcrease, but was eventually beaten when DiBello’s shot tipped off a Renfrew defenceman’s stick and into the upper echelons of the cage. Barr restored Renfrew’s two-goal lead when he connected 2:21 into the final stanza. The game got a bit chippy at times with the Rams taking nine minor penalties and the Wolves seven. Stittsville coach Hamish Fraser received a game misconduct from referee Matt Perreault after voicing his displeasure with the proceedings.

a surprisingly easy 5-1 win over the Gatineau Mustangs Sunday, Dec. 21. Barr and Scott Conroy added two assists for the Wolves, who were minus the services of six regulars for the contest. Only Justin-Claude Bissonnette found the range for the Buckinghambased Mustangs. Bissonnette broke Matt Gagne’s shutout bid with 5:15 remaining in the final stanza. Not to be outdone, the Wolves got that one back on a powerplay when Suckow blasted home a point dart past Gatineau goalkeeper Justin MaletteTrottier about two minutes later. The Wolves were off to the races with two goals in each of the first two periods. Hein counted 2:48 into the game, and Smith followed 10 minutes later for a 2-0 Renfrew advantage. Barr, Luke Lapierre and Smith combined off a picturesque 3-on-1 break to up the ante to 3-0 Wolves 7:49 into the middle session. Jason Collins scored his first Ontario Hockey League goal with Plymouth Dec. 19. The Renfrew native snapped a 1-1 tie 8:19 into the second period at Barrie. The goal put his team ahead for keeps and the Whalers went on to double the homestanding Colts 4-2. Rob Ryan, father of the Wolves Andrew Ryan, won the Wolves $500 cash draw at the game Friday night. The Wolves also held their annual Christmas turkey draws with 10 lucky people taking home a bird from the game. The Wolves open 2015 with a 7:30 p.m. game in Almonte Jan. 3. by Gary Smith playing. Play starts Saturday at 9 a.m., and goes all day Saturday and Sunday and features some great club curlers from Ottawa and the Valley and spots at the Provincials. So come out this weekend and take in some good club curling while enjoying the warm hospitality of the Renfrew Curling Club. And coming up in the New Year, the curling club will once again be offering its Learn to Curl program, Rookie Rocks, for new and nearly new curlers that are interested in learning the basic skills of the game. The six week, $60 program is an excellent way to be introduced into the sport and it is offered by experienced instructors every Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. starting Jan. 13. To register or for more information contact the club or call Andy at 613-432-6725. The club will also offer Intermediate Rocks for curlers that want to work on their skills and help them move to the next level in their curling. It will be offered for $60 at the same time as Rookies Rocks. I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone all the best in the New Year and hope that you will take us up on our invitation to enjoy a great winter pastime this coming year.

Sports - A book written by Douglas homebrew Danny Gallagher and Bill Young about the 1994 Montreal Expos has garnered hefty praise from the Ottawa Citizen with the Christmas giftbuying season in high gear. Citizen writer Bruce Ward gave a thumbs up to Ecstasy to Agony as one of the top six sports books of 2014. “Gallagher and Young, both inveterate Expos’ fans, lovingly resurrect the 1994 Expos team that was destined for the playoffs before the players’ strike in August killed the season and the World Series,’’ Ward wrote. The 374-page Expos’ book is included in Ward’s review along with books on NBA icon Michael Jordan, NFL coaching legend Bill Parcells, hockey great Gordie Howe, NHL player Jordin Tootoo and Wrigley Field. “Ideal gifts for the armchair athletes on your Christmas list,’’ Ward said in his review which has also appeared in other Post Media newspapers, including the Vancouver Sun and Saskatoon Star-Phoenix. Ecstasy to Agony is available in Renfrew at Lawrence Gallagher’s law office on Renfrew Avenue East.

God gives us each a gift of life to cherish from our birth. He gives us friends and those we love to share our days on earth. He watches us with loving care and takes us by the hand. He blesses us with countless joys and guides the lives we’ve planned. Then, when our work on earth is done, He calls us to His side, to live with Him in happiness where peace and love abide. Although it’s been 1 year now since God called you home, we still miss you just the same but feel so blessed to have you with us for 84 wonderful years. Love always dad, Mike and Betty

In Loving Memory of Glen Bresson August 3, 1950 – December 24, 2011 I said a prayer for you today, And know God must have heard; I felt the answer in my heart, Although He spoke not a word.

Every day in some small way Memories of you come our way Though absent you are very near Still missed, still loved and very dear

Remembering you is easy, We do it every day. Missing you is a heartache, That never goes away. You had a smile for everyone, Your had a heart of gold. You left the sweetest memories, The world could ever hold. To us you were someone special, What more is there to say, Except to wish with all our hearts, That you were here In our heart, you memory today. lingers, Always tender, fond and Forever loved, true, Mom, Hailey-Dawn, There’s not a day, dear Richard, Kyle and Nick Mother, We do not think of you. Love Julie and Jill

I didn’t ask for wealth or fame I knew you wouldn’t mind; I asked for priceless treasures rare, Of a more lasting kind. I prayed that He’d be near to you, Now that you’ve gone away; To grant you all of His blessings, And His light to show your way. I asked for happiness for you, In all things great and small; But that you’d know His loving care, I prayed for most of all. Unknown author Diane and Family CLR576420

Happy Birthday Mom, December 31 MOTHER AND FATHER We had a wonderful mother and father, Who both never grew old; Their smiles were made of sunshine, Their hearts were solid gold. Their eyes were bright as shining stars, Both their cheeks rose coloured you see; We had a wonderful mother and father, That’s the way it will always be. So those we love don’t go away, They walk beside us everyday; Unseen, unheard, but always near, Still loved, still missed and very dear! Sadly missed and never forgotten, Love your family

IN MEMORIAM

Except to wish with all our hearts, That you were here today. They say that time heals everything, But we know it isn’t so, We miss you just as much today, As we did 12 years ago.

The bond between Mother and son, Is a special one, It remains unchanged by time or distance, It is the purest love, Unconditional and true, It is understanding of any situation, And forgiving of all mistakes, I am grateful to have been blessed, With such a wonderful Mother, You may be out of sight, But you remain in my heart forever, Love Jeff

She was the oldest daughter of Vernon and Ethel Hagen. After Jess’s retirement in 1976 they moved from Dillsburg PA to Mt. Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle! 0101
