Former newspaperman remembered as hard worker SHERRY HAAIMA sherry.haaima@metroland.com

There was printer’s ink in his blood. Boyd Wilson, former owner of the Renfrew Mercury, passed away at the Ottawa General Hospital on Friday, Dec. 8. He was 85. He is being remembered as a humble man who was dedicated to the newspaper business. Boyd, along with brothers Norman and Kent, became owners after the death of their aunt Hilda Frood, who owned the paper. They owned the Mercury from 1964-1970. “He loved every bit of that business, he knew it inside out,” said Melba Wilson, his wife of 42 years. “He lived and breathed the newspaper.” The couple actually met at the newspaper office. “I was on the linotype. He did everything — along with his brothers — he was a pressman and he worked in production,” she said. The couple both worked at the former newspaper office, located beside the post office on Raglan Street. “We had a lot of fun, it was serious but we still had fun,” said Melba. Boyd started in the business very early on, selling newspapers on a street corner in Toronto. Born in Renfrew, he went to technical school in Toronto and then to work for a news-

Melba said her husband had a fantastic memory and although he retired from the Mercury at age 65, he continued to follow the industry. “Every time we’d go travelling he’d collect so many papers,” she said. Boyd loved dropping into various newspaper offices and talking shop. “We’d cross the border and the trunk would be full of papers.” Former Renfrew Mercury owner Fred Runge said Boyd was an interest-

ing man. “He was one of the hardest workers you’d ever want to have in your company,” said Runge. “The whole family was — Norm, Kent and Elaine (Dick).” In 1978, Runge purchased the paper from Don McCuaig, who had bought it from the Wilsons in 1970. Pressman Daryl Fiebig of Renfrew remembers Boyd as a humble man. “You could talk to him for an hour and you never heard him talk about

Historian Olga Lewis lived and breathed local history Continued from front

“Olga Lewis lives and breathes local history,” said Lucy Hass, former editor, announcing the column was coming to a close due to her health issues. “For 17 years, Lewis has been writing free columns for this newspaper, poring over massive stretches of microfilm at the National Archives of Canada building, to give readers a glimpse into the town’s rich and vibrant past. Prompt and extremely organized, she never missed a deadline.” Lewis was a former president of Heritage Renfrew and was also awarded a life membership with the club in 2014. Members of Heritage Renfrew formed an honour guard around her casket for the Jan. 3 service at St. Paul’s Anglican Church. Current president Darlene Mask wrote an online condolence saying the town has lost a dedicated town historian. “Heritage Renfrew has lost a dedicated member, an executive, adviser and researcher of people, events and much more. We all have lost the access to the vast knowledge that Olga had on the Town of Renfrew and its people and events,” said Mask in the post. “Olga was not a public person and did her work in a quiet way and was always available to help if she could. Her family has lost much more. Heritage Renfrew members send their

Kate Windle was filled with sorrow when she learned of the passing of the treasured Renfrew historian. “She loved life, past and present and was a great asset to our community,” said Windle in an online condolence book. “Her passion for getting the whole story and making sure it was factual was always appreciated by this author. Her generous spirit will live on in my heart and mind. She will

surely be missed by all who were fortunate to know her.” Lewis was born in Toronto, one of six children of Jack Pelky and Edith Heslop. The family later established new roots with a move in 1940 to Renfrew, where her dad took a job as loom fixer at O’Brien Mills. He later worked for Renfrew Textiles. Olga and husband Cecil, who died in 2000, went on to raise five of their own children. One child died of viral pneumonia at three months. Her daughters live in Renfrew and Haley Station, her sons

in Pembroke and Zurich, Ont. As a youngster, Lewis was already enamoured by history. “It was one of my better subjects, and I’ve always had an interest in finding out more about places and people,” she said in a feature article when she was named the town historian in 2014. “The more I learn, the more I want to learn.” She didn’t have the same opportunities as her younger siblings, though. As the oldest child, and in keeping with tradition in a family with Polish roots, she began working to provide additional income for the family. Her five siblings all graduated from Renfrew Collegiate Institute, while Lewis only received a Grade 8 education. She was kept busy over the years with various jobs, including weaver and working in the hardware department of Stedman’s on the main street. By 1994, when she retired, she reignited her fascination with history. She joined Heritage Renfrew that year and three years later began writing the From the Old Files column for the Renfrew Mercury. Hass put it best when she said goodbye to her columns, “The Renfrew Mercury will miss her research as well, and thanks her for her contributions to her hometown newspaper.”

Horton approves budget with slight levy increase for 2018 TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com

Horton Township efficiently passed its budget just before the new year was rung in. Council approved the budget on Dec. 19, 2017 with a 3.49 per cent levy increase after growth. Horton Mayor Robert Kingsbury explained via email that the increase is a result of a long, extensive process that started with the managers of each department reviewing and submitting their budgets to the chief administrative officer

(CAO) and treasurer, finance committee and then to council and a public meeting that was held on Dec. 12. “I can assure all our residents that there is no fat in this budget. We were initially hoping we could hold the line around two per cent however in the end this was the best we could do. The number of a 3.49 per cent levy increase is what is actually needed to sustain the services and programs for the 2018 year,” said Kingsbury. “Without this increase we would have to cut out something that we are now providing.” Kingsbury thanks his staff, managers, CAO,

treasurer and all members of the finance committee, which is chaired by Coun. Jamey Larone, the treasurer and all of council “for their hard work in achieving the end results of our 2018 budget.” The estimated 2018 increase due to growth is equal to a levy increase of approximately $28,525. The 2018 levy is set at $2,261,087 compared to last year at $2,157,361. This rate increase does not include the portion from Renfrew County and the school boards. So the exact increase per ratepayer has yet to be calculated.

Some of items set to be addressed in the 2018 budget are work on Garden of Eden Road and Thomson Road as well as upgrades to the community hall stove/bar and drainage. The township is continuing to increase its reserve balance, which in 2010 was $603,765 and is forecast to be $806,381 in 2018. The cost of the Ontario Provincial Police service to the township, which according to the budget presentation has increased 145.6 per cent since 2007, will cost $466,229 in 2018 compared to $462,135 last year. Whitewater Region approves budget TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com

Council of the Township of Whitewater Region approved the 2018 budget Dec. 20. The tax-supported budget represents a municipal levy increase of 1.5 per cent compared to 2017 due to growth. Without growth, the levy would have risen by 2.415 per cent. The actual tax rates will be calculated in May 2018 and will factor in changes to the county and education levies. The budget includes strategic investments in infrastructure, including the following road resurfacing projects: • Indian Road • Anderson Road/Watchorn Drive • Kohlsmith Road (guard rails between Mansel Hill and Mineview) • Hydro Bay Road (remaining section), Mowat Road and township-owned section of Highcrest Trail • Completion of Turcotte Road commenced in 2017 • Powers Road (two corrective patches near Robertson) Simpson Street and part of Hume Street will also be engineered for future reconstruction and to replace dated piped infrastructure. Detailed design and engineering work is currently being completed for the reconstruction of Truelove Street (Crawford to Wren), including Crawford Street (Main to Cowley) and John

Street (Main to Truelove). The project (road, sidewalks, and water/sewer) is deemed “shovel ready” for construction in 2018 dependent on receiving senior level grant funding. The budget also includes funding to replace two fire vehicles, a tandem plow truck, backhoe and other equipment. Investments will also be undertaken at Veterans Memorial Park with paving of the front lane and upgrades to the beach house. Street lights will be upgraded to LED in Beachburg and Westmeath’s ball diamond will get some much-needed attention. The township will be funding the engineering work to replace the accessible ramp and stairs at the Westmeath community hall. A total of $50,000 was set aside to support community initiatives with $30,000 earmarked for partnership and sponsorship grants to community organizations, and $20,000 for grants in the hamlets and villages under the Community Improvement Plan. Water rates in Cobden and Haley will not change for 2018, with rates in Beachburg set to rise by 5 per cent. Cobden sewer rates will increase by 5 per cent to increase reserves ahead of the sewage plant upgrades and correct a number of manhole structures in Cobden to reduce stormwater infiltration. Close to $308,000 will also be transferred to reserve to fund future infrastructure renewal. Mayor Hal Johnson said: “The 2018 budget is once again focused on infrastructure with key investments in roads and safety.”

Stay safe on the trails It’s winter and a snowmobiler’s paradise out there, but it’s important to be aware that many of the same rules of the road also apply to snowmobile operators. If snowmobile operators are going to be enjoying time on their sleds this winter season, it’s important to be fully educated on the rules of the trails. According to the Ontario Provincial Police, charges such as speeding, failing to stop at a road crossing and driving with blood/alcohol levels surpassing the legal limit carry a variety of penalties, which could include several fines, loss of driver’s licences, criminal charges and even imprisonment. If operating any type of vehicle, whether a car, snowmobile or ATV, alcohol or drugs don’t mix. Riders with a blood/alcohol limit between the warn range of 0.05 and 0.08 could face a three-day warning suspending a driver’s licence on the road. And the repercussions get stricter with each repeat occurrence. The OPP will be out monitoring area trails, waterways and roadways to ensure

proper protocols are followed. Over the 2016-2017 season, police investigated 27 snowmobiling deaths across the province with several involving speed or alcohol. Riders can ensure they get the most out of this snowmobile season by being prepared and following a simple checklist before heading out on the trails. A valid driver’s licence is required (if under 16, obtain a snow vehicle operator’s licence); provide proof of snowmobile ownership and sled registration with validation sticker; always travel with proof of sled insurance (pink slip); and make sure all riders wear an approved snowmobile helmet; a valid snowmobile trail permit, to be displayed prominently with a permit receipt, is also necessary. Always be sure to carry an emergency kit with an ice pick, extra food and charged cell phone, and inspect your sled before embarking (check oil and gas levels, etc.) Keep in mind that the rules of the road also apply to the trails. Be prepared, stay sober and slow down.

It’s been a privilege to be a journalist THERESA FRITZ

Back on sunny day in June 1989, I sat at my Carleton University convocation ceremony and could not believe my luck. Not only was I getting my journalism degree, I had my first real job as a reporter to go to the following week, I was sitting listening to then media-mogul Conrad Black speak. Black’s words about the industry at that time filled me with hope and excitement. I believed I had chosen a profession where I would make a difference and what I wrote would impact people’s lives. I also expected to retire from this profession. That was not to be. The details are simple enough. Myself, along with other talented Ottawa journalists, are now out of work due to a newspaper transaction between Metroland Media and Postmedia in November 2017. It’s business and it happens. But, for me, it’s personal. I started working for Thomson Newspapers as a reporter at The Trentonian. I learned a lot. From there, I moved to the Ottawa Valley

to become a reporter at The Almonte Gazette and The Carleton Place Canadian – both Runge newspapers. At those papers I moved up to assistant editor and then editor. From there, I became a reporter with the Performance Printing Group and the EMC papers and then editor of the Ottawa EMC papers which included the Arnprior, West Carleton, Kanata and Stittsville EMC newspapers. Those papers were acquired by Metroland in October 2011 and I became the editor of the West Carleton Review. I got to work with some former Runge colleagues and it felt like coming home. I was then promoted to managing editor of the Ottawa papers – Kanata Kourier-Standard, Stittsville News, West Carleton Review, Ottawa East News, Ottawa West News, NepeanBarrhaven News, Ottawa South News, Orleans News and Manotick News. The Manotick Newspaper was merged with Ottawa South more than a year ago. I was also the managing editor of both The Renfrew Mercury and the Arnprior Chronicle-Guide.

This job of mine has never been just a job. It wasn’t for the money. Had I wanted to monetize my education all those years ago, I would have continued on and pursued the law career I had planned. This career of mine was a calling based on a natural curiosity, a desire to get to the bottom of things and serve the public by providing them information. Awards were never the motivator. It was that call from someone who liked a story that meant more. It was the person who reached out in the grocery store who mattered. And it was the complaints too. Mistakes - those made you want to do better. You can’t hide when you are face to face with your community. That’s community journalism. Being let into someone’s home, their lives, or having them share their joy or heartbreak with you is quite something. It is a trust. Building trust takes years. This passion of mine has kept me going for 28 years. I can’t even begin to guess how many assignments I have covered, how many stories I have written or how many people – the famous and not so famous – I have interviewed. I have boxes in my basement filled with clippings, papers, photos and negatives. I just can’t seem

to part with them. More recent work fills several USB keys. Some stories I have written have touched me more than others. They are permanently etched on my soul. Some have made me laugh, others cry. I know journalists should remain objective but if you are not human, what’s the point? There are too many people to thank for their support but there are a few who are very special to me. I need not name them here. I believe they know who they are. I came across a copy of the final edition of The Toronto Telegram from 1971 while cleaning out my office. Reading the front-page story about the paper’s closing, a quote from one departing reporter struck me. “I want it remembered that I did not leave the news business,” he said. “It left me.” Newspapers matter. They reflect our communities, our neighbours, ourselves. A community newspaper is quite possibly a community’s best friend, a hand to hold in good times and bad. It is hard to say goodbye. Times have changed. My industry has changed. I, for one, will always be proud to say I was a journalist. And I want it known that I didn’t leave my profession, it left me.

Always something special on the Algonquin bird count Sadly, the Christmas Bird Count season has come and gone. This year I took part in four counts, the most recent being the Algonquin Park count on Dec. 30. It was cold, -24 at 7 a.m. when Ann Mayall, my Algonquin Park CBC partner for the past 18 years, and I began “the walk.” Our wonderful route takes us from just west of Mew Lake to the old rail bed that forms part of the Track and Tower Trail. By the time we’ve reached the bed, a remnant of the Ottawa, Arnprior and Parry Sound Railway, we’ve walked three kilometres, roughly a quarter of our route. We then head east to Mew Lake Campground where our car awaits us. The route takes us down through mature hardwoods to a long expanse of northern conifers including swathes of spindly black spruce. Fresh tracks of moose, eastern wolf, pine marten, fisher, and river otter abounded along the route. The otter tracks were especially common along a frozen creek, and were so fresh I was surprised we didn’t come across their makers. The spruces bore a large crop of cones but many of these had already released their seeds. While large numbers of seed-eating finches were not expected, to our delight we encountered hundreds of crossbills, finches owning oddly shaped bills for prying open cone scales. Red and white-winged crossbills were present, with several flocks containing both species. We also encountered several flocks of pine siskins and one of purple finch. The rail bed takes us past Head

During the later years, she held many titles - membership chair, treasurer, president, vice-president and past vice board advisor. Research was always top of the list. On Feb. 14, 2014 Heritage Renfrew awarded Olga an honorary membership. At that time she received recognition awards from MPP John Yakabuski and MP Cheryl Gallant, and congratulations from Renfrew’s Mayor Don Eady on behalf of the town, for her years of dedicated work to heritage and being a part of preserving the history of the town. Michael Runtz Nature’s Way Creek Marsh where each year I hope to see something extraordinary, perhaps a great gray owl or golden eagle. Expectations are always high even though over the past 20 years the best birds I’ve seen are northern shrikes. But this year in the speckled alders bordering the creek was a large flock of American goldfinches accompanied by two American tree sparrows. The latter I rarely see on the count so that sighting was exciting. During our seven-hour walk (without snowshoes, which was a mistake), Ann became chilled. After reaching the car I sent her off to warmth and carried on. I headed for the Madawaska River near Pog Lake where open water flowed below the small dam. It was past 4 o’clock when I arrived but of no surprise ducks were absent. I was about to leave when I spotted movement on the opposite side and far end of the open water. It was a mink. I squeaked on my fingers and the little weasel began running over the ice toward the dam. When directly across from me, it jumped into the frigid water and swam in my direction.

This mink made a brief appearance on the Algonquin Park Christmas Bird Count. I always carry my camera but had difficulty focusing on the mink for the camera was half frozen and the viewfinder iced over. When it reached my shore the mink disappeared, only to reappear seconds later, its head popping out of the snow mere metres away.

For a couple of seconds it looked at me before vanishing for good. Fortunately my camera had come to life, leaving me with a permanent memory of a most remarkable encounter. The Nature email is mruntz@start. ca

Town of Renfrew historian Olga Lewis will surely be missed To the editor:

-- TRINITY-ST. ANDREW’S UNITED CHURCH --

- a job she was passionate about and took seriously. In late 2016 she retired her Renfrew Mercury column ‘Old Files’ after 17 years of dedicated writing because of illness. What a pleasure it must have been to discover old write-ups, telling of interesting, funny and frightful information of the past. What a delight it must have been to stumble on information about a subject she might have been working on. She spent 17 years of searching the newspaper, which would have given plenty of insight into the goings on in the early days of Renfrew. This would generate a good data base and create eagerness to search even more topics of interest. In March 2017 with recommendation from Heritage Renfrew to the

Town of Renfrew, Olga received the title ‘town historian.’ It was a title she accepted with pleasure and honour. She quietly continued to do the job of research that she loved, with very little public exposure. Projects were on the table to be completed and much more information was needed. Olga demanded accuracy and complete account of any subject she searched. When illness slowed her, her stubbornness prevailed and she worked on. Her latest project she was working on was about the main street history of buildings and owners from beginning to now. She left her mark in Heritage Renfrew, as many booklets she created will

remain in the shelf library as searching tools for researchers. Many Books of Renfrew County Marriages and of Churches, Cemeteries, Post Office and many others. Heritage Renfrew board of directors will miss her attendance, ideas, her strong opinion and correctness in guidance that she brought to the board table. Her zest for the knowledge of the town of Renfrew and its people will be treasured and her books preserved for future researchers. A past newspaper reporter Steve Newman described her as a walking encyclopedia. That I believe says it best. Darlene Mask President of Heritage Renfrew Historical Society and Archives

Helferty’s Disaster Restoration celebrates national award TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com

Cleaning up after a heartbreaking fire or natural disaster is a tough job - but it’s one that Helferty’s Disaster Restoration - DKI in Cobden is always up for. They were recently honoured with the 2017 Platinum Project Award (for a large/complicated project) and were up against DKI offices from across Canada and the United States, including in Montreal, Toronto, Calgary and Vancouver, some with upwards of 200 employees. Owner Devlin Helferty calls this a huge accomplishment for a small company with only 15 to 18 people. “It was a real big win for us small town guys to win a national award,” said Helferty. “We are really proud of our accomplishment.” Helferty and his team have been extremely busy with the flooding in Renfrew County. He notes the award was presented at the DKI annual general meeting in May 2017 in Quebec City. They received the award for the restoration work after a November 2015 fire in Pembroke at a 46-unit, 93,000 square foot condo building. After the fire, the roof collapsed and the water soaked down. Helferty’s processed content for 36 of the 46 units. “Logistically it was a lot to manage with people coming and going,” said Helferty.

It took them months to clean up. For the first three weeks they processed content and removed wet/smoke damaged material. They were also running a diesel generator for a commercial dryer (they are the only restoration company in all of Eastern Ontario to have one). Helferty’s Disaster Restoration has been serving Cobden and the entire Ottawa Valley since 1968. Devlin bought it from his parents Don and Lynne 25 years ago. When asked what his toughest job has been he said a project like this condo fire, because the residents are still not back in their homes after two years. “It was the largest project we have been involved in,” said Helferty.

Supportive staff In total 75 staff were involved, including Helferty’s own staff and a number of subcontractors. He acknowledges the dedication and hard work of his staff, saying without the number of local contractors involved the award would not have been possible. Those involved include: Dumpy’z Waster Removal, Bee-Line Auto & Truck Wreckers/Disposals, Cassidy’s Ltd., Saffco Electrical Heating & Plumbing, Detail Roofing, Nature’s Outlook, Gary & Ron’s Cabinet Making, Layman Fire & Safety, and Joan Lehto Professional Cleaning Services. “It kept the work local and I praise all the employees who helped out,” said Helferty. He also thanks Rick Mackay, the building property manager, the condo board members and AlMotormaster lan Gallagher, the primary adjuster Eliminator Battery for the structure. Booster Pack And he gives Reg. $139.00 thanks to his wife Tiffany Lepack/Metroland Sarah Davies and SALE their two children Helferty’s Disaster Restoration – DKI in Cobden, recently won a national award for Nia and Vivian their restoration work on condo building in Pembroke. RVH receives exemplary standing in accreditation survey

Introducing the communities newest members!

Renfrew Victoria Hospital earned a glowing review from Accreditation Canada after a threeday survey conducted on Dec. 4—6. “This is a milestone to be celebrated, and we congratulate you and your team for your commitment to providing safe, high quality health services,” wrote Julie Langlois, chair, Accreditation Decision Committee in a December 20 letter informing Renfrew Victoria Hospital (RVH) of receiving the highest award. Accreditation Canada is a national non-profit organization that provides an external peerreview process to assess and improve the services that health institutions provide to their patients and clients, based on standards of excellence. Keanan Stone, RVH board chair, noted that receiving this outstanding result from Accreditation Canada is a welcome validation of the passion and conviction the entire team at RVH shares for delivering the best possible healthcare experience for patients and their families,

not just for a few days under observation, but when it really matters, every day of the year. “It is without doubt because of our management, staff, physicians, and volunteers that we are able to continue improving our facilities and services year after year. They should all feel very proud of the roles they play in helping to achieve our vision of excellence, as I do, in this moment, and in every RVH achievement, whether great or small.” At the survey debriefing meeting with RVH staff, physicians and board members, Accreditation Canada surveyor team leader Marianne Walker announced that RVH met all of 31 Required Organizational Practices (ROPS) in priority areas such as patient safety, client and family centred care, ethics, risk management, and quality improvement. RVH also achieved an outstanding 99.3 per cent compliance with the standards. Walker went on to highlight some recent suc-

cesses at RVH including development of the 2016—2021 Strategic Plan, noting the work that went into soliciting input from many sources. She praised the development and integration of RVH’s Patient and Family Advisory Council (PFAC), noting “You’re far ahead of where many organizations are.” The surveyors were also impressed with the redevelopment of the regional nephrology centre and global funding for the renal program, as well as the construction of the new professional building to help attract physicians to the community. In her overall comments, Walker remarked on the level staff and physician engagement and praised the teamwork that was witnessed. “You work as a team. You are all caring and compassionate in everything you do.” She also made note of the hospital’s strong financial health and community partnerships and “high-functioning, dedicated” board of

directors, as well as caring leadership who are “visible and accessible at all levels.” The surveyors were pleased with the ongoing focus on patient safety and quality care and the specific attention to infection control and hand hygiene. “Your plan is very robust and comprehensive,” noted Walker. When it came to client and family centred care, Walker used the word “amazing” to describe the integration of PFAC members in clinical areas, the strategies and accomplishments. She pointed to new patient whiteboards in every room and revised visiting hours as examples of RVH’s response to PFAC feedback. The RVH ethics committee was commended for its adoption of a evidence-based ethical decision-making framework, for being diverse and well-established, and providing support to physicians and staff facing an ethical dilemma. “Staff and physicians feel comfortable bringing forward ethical issues,” said Walker.

Frew Year’s Eve a hit

Frew Year’s Eve, the Town of Renfrew’s wrap-up event to the Canada 150 festivities, was a resounding success. Above, Ryan Lanoix and daughter Raiyah check out a scorpion during the Little Ray’s Reptiles show. Right, Emma White enjoys a slice at the pizza party held before the fireworks. In November, Trinity-St. Andrew’s United Church Thrift Shop presented $880 to Judy Ewart, the executive director of the Renfrew and Area Seniors Home Support program. Each quarter a portion of the net sales of the thrift shop is given back to a not-for-profit community agency. Ewart explains the mission of our organization as a community support service that assists seniors and adults with disabilities to age well at home. This donation will help us to provide those non-medical services (transportation, friendly visiting, telephone assurance, home maintenance, grocery delivery, frozen meals and client intervention and assistance) that members of our community have come to rely on. Working quietly in our community, Renfrew Home Support assists over 900 individuals annually from the Town of Renfrew, Horton Township and parts of Admaston/Bromley, McNab/ Braeside, Greater Madawaska and Whitewater Region. Staff and volunteers work together to provide these services and our door is always open for new clients and volunteers. Our congratulations go out to Trinity St. Andrew’s Thrift Shop on the success of their shop and

THIS WEEK’S PUZZLE ANSWERS IN NEXT WEEKS ISSUE.

sudoku

horoscopes

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

LEO – Jul 23/Aug 23 Leo, you have just about sold one of your ideas and now it’s just a matter of being patient. Soon the results will support your vision, and you can enjoy the fruits of your labors.

SAGITTARIUS – Nov 23/Dec 21 Sagittarius, looking within yourself can help you get a grasp on your situation and your future. Make the most of this introspection and use it as a catalyst for positive change.

TAURUS – Apr 21/May 21 Taurus, a newfound devotion to exercise may improve your life in many different ways. If you have been vacillating on whether or not to embrace a new lifestyle, just do it.

VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22 Let other people’s perceptions roll off you like water off of a duck’s back, Virgo. To get the full picture, you need to immerse yourself and make up your own mind.

CAPRICORN – Dec 22/Jan 20 Take certain things with a grain of salt, Capricorn. Until you can flush out the facts, there is no point in worrying or passing judgement. Be patient and things will come to light.

GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21 An unexpected situation has put you out of your element, Gemini. For now you can simply go with the flow and see how things work out. Don’t let this get the better of you.

LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23 Libra, take a few steps back and think about whether or not a new approach is needed regarding a specific situation. Thinking logically instead of emotionally may help.

AQUARIUS – Jan 21/Feb 18 Find more time to explore an important relationship, Aquarius. Don’t overlook the importance of date night. Make time for this important person even if it requires sacrifices.

CANCER – Jun 22/Jul 22 Cancer, dabbling in a few different projects may give you a unique perspective and the inspiration to take things in a new direction. Keep putting out those feelers.

SCORPIO – Oct 24/Nov 22 Scorpio, take a day to recharge your batteries if you feel your energy stores are running low. You may not need an extended vacation to do so, just a day to relax.

PISCES – Feb 19/Mar 20 Pisces, do something unexpected this week and watch as those around you are inspired by your willingness to try new things.

The Autumn Leaves was hosted by Renfrew on Jan. 3 and the team of Gail Keyes, Laurie Millar, Anne McNeill, and Laura Hanson played well in the morning to win comfortably. In the afternoon, Yvonne Sklepowicz took over for Gail and the team didn’t skip a beat shutting out the other Pembroke team. Shelley Jamieson, Marg Dawson, Rachel Leclaire and Theresa Mann ended the day with two losses. The morning game was tied coming home and the opposition skip from Killaloe made a wonderful shot. With Renfrew having the

counting rock biting the button, Killaloe managed to move their rock about four inches and score the winning point. In the afternoon the local ladies lost against Arnprior. A wonderful warm lunch was enjoyed by all — thanks to Joan Eaton, Louise Bowles, Marie Edwards and Barb Roy and complimented by having Gus Woito “manning” the bar. Low Cup The men travelled to Arnprior in Low Cup action and took on the host team in the first action of the new year. Rob Warren’s foursome with Don Rouble, Rory McKay and Joe Kasaboski tied the morning game 4-4 but came on strong after lunch to win 7-4.

Dave Eady’s gang with Andy Miller, Jim Berg and Ed Hanson lost game 1, 8-7, after giving up four in the third. Tied after seven without a hammer in Game 2 they lost 5-4. Pembroke and Deep River split so Pembroke only gained 4.5 points on Renfrew’s lead (153 vs. 136). In Thursday afternoon mixed curling, the hard fought draw was won by Joe Kasaboski and his rink of Chuck Ross, Cathy Wall and Bill Vant-Haaff. The next senior men’s breakfast will be Jan. 23 from 7:15-10 a.m. and the culinary delights will only set you back $10; so make a date, bring a friend and enjoy a great meal that everyone always looks forward to.

CARD OF THANKS

Sadly, Christopher (58) passed away W e d n e s d a y December 27 at Health Science North in Sudbury. Devoted husband and friend to Sandra, his beloved wife of 36 years. Loving father and best friend to daughters Vanessa and Casey. Chris is survived by his mother Mary and sisters Mary Anne, Patricia (Jeff), nieces Candace, Christine and nephew Jeffrey. He is predeceased by his father Basil. He leaves behind many good friends and extended family. Christ was a history buff, an avid fisherman and loved all things in nature. He was the KING of “one liners”. He was an expert snuggler and loved playing video games with his daughters. A celebration of life was held Friday January 5, 2018 at the Moose Hall from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Kidney Foundation of Canada would be greatly appreciated by his family. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Alternative Funeral Services.

CARD OF THANKS

WITH HEARTFELT THANKS We would like to thank Andy for calling the ambulance, Dr. Strader and nurses at the Renfrew Victoria Emergency department for your quick thinking and great care you gave Keith, Dr. Pinard and the nurse who went by ambulance with Keith to the Heart Institute, all doctors and nurses there who looked after Keith in any way. You are all such wonderful, compassionate, and caring people, which I saw everyday I was there. Thank you to my family and friends for all your support through this difficult journey. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts, Patsy, Layton, Bobbie-Jo, Kyle and Grandkids My First Christmas in Heaven I see the countless Christmas trees around the world below, With tiny lights, like Heaven’s stars, reflecting on the snow. The sight is so spectacular, please wipe away that tear, For I am spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year. I hear the many Christmas songs that people hold so dear, But the sounds of music can’t compare with the Christmas choir up here. I have no words to tell you, the joy the voices bring, For it is beyond description to hear the angels sing. I know how much you miss me, I see the pain inside your heart, But I am not so far away, we really aren’t apart. So be happy for me dear ones, you know I hold you dear. And be glad I’m spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year. I send you each a special gift from my Heavenly home above, I send you each a memory of my undying love. After all “LOVE” is the gift, more precious than pure gold, It was always most important in the story Jesus told. Please love and keep each other, as my Father said to you, For I can’t count the blessings of love he has for you, So, have a Merry Christmas and wipe away that tear, Remember, I’m spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year.

In loving memory of a dear son and brother, Douglas James McArthur

March 29, 1957 - January 8, 2017 God saw you getting tired, and a cure was not to be, So he put His arms around you, And whispered “Come with me” With tearful eyes we watched you, And saw you pass away, Although we loved you dearly, We could not make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating, Hard working hands at rest, God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best. Always in our hearts and lovingly remembered, Mom, Betty, and sisters Margo and Bonnie IN MEMORIAM

IN MEMORIAM In loving memory of June Schnob (Lentz) who passed away January 2, 2017. You can only have one mother, Patient, kind and true; No other friend in all the world, Will be the same to you. When other friends forsake you, To mother you will return, For all her loving kindness, She asks nothing in return. As we look upon her picture, Sweet memories we recall, Of a face so full of sunshine, And a smile for one and all. Sweet Jesus, take this message, To our dear mother up above; Tell her how we miss her, And give her all our love. Mary marvels at how problems were solved in Depression years In the winter the creek served as a watering hole for our livestock “Yes siree, it’s here to stay,” Father said at breakfast, forking in his fried potatoes and salt pork. He had already completely banked the old log house with snow, and packed it with the shovel so that it would stay where he put it. With no foundation, we needed all the help we could get to keep the cold drafts of winter outside. The barns were snug, kept warm by the livestock and with boards on hinges over the windows, so they could be opened for milking and feeding the livestock, and otherwise kept closed. Logs were rolled against the big doors when they closed as well. Mother said the barns were warmer than the house, which Father said was pure nonsense. The big watering trough, which sat in the middle of the barnyard, but close to the pump had been drained of its water, and was now full of snow. There would be no watering of the livestock from there until the winter was over. Being a Saturday, I was home from school, and Father knew how I loved to be with him when he was doing farm chores, and after breakfast, he told me to get my clothes on, and to dress warmly because we’d be outside for a spell. After I was dressed, Mother wrapped a scarf around my face, and I was covered from head to toe, with only a slit left open for my eyes. Father went to the drive shed and got an axe, picking one carefully from the several leaning against the wall. He nodded in the general direction of the west hill, and leading the way, he broke track down into the gully, and I carefully put one foot after another where he had first stepped. It was hard plodding ... the snow up to Father’s knees, and I silently wondered why we hadn’t taken the toboggan and simply got on and slid down to the creek. This is where I knew Father was heading. We got to the creek, which cut through one of our lower fields. In the summer, in most places, it was just a trickle and easy to get across to reach the back of our farm. But in the winter the creek served as a watering hole for our livestock, and that was the reason Father and I were at its edge. Father scraped the snow off a spot touching the shoreline, and wielding the axe, he soon had a hole deep in the ice. I could see the water, barely moving, and the hole big enough that at

the dumbest animals on the farm, but I thought they were pretty clever to learn so quickly where they could go on their own for water. And again I would marvel at how problems were solved in those Depression years. Imagine — a watering hole replacing the water tank! And the stone boat put to use when it was impossible to use the wagon or the sleigh because of thick bush or deep snow. An ice house to keep our food from spoiling when there was no electricity; stores willing to trade chickens and eggs for needed supplies; clothes handed down from one sibling to another and Father putting the same patches on galoshes that were used on the inner tubes of the old Model

T Ford to get another year out of our footwear. When I thought about it all, I worried less about the lean times called the Depression. I knew there would always be a way for us to survive, one day to the next. There might be no money for anything but the bare essentials, but we would live out those years through hard work, and putting to good use what we already had on the farm. Renfrew Bridge Club crowns Churchill, Perras club champions MIKE NAGRODSKI

While most folks think of Santa and presents during the month of December, the Renfrew Bridge Club members must continue to think of contracts, finesses and slams as, on average, 12-and-a-half tables of players have turned out for each afternoon’s game. Each session’s “highlight of the week” follows: • On Dec. 6, though Board #13 was played 11 times, always in a partial heart contract, only Alice Smaglinski and Diaan Juby managed to win 12 tricks from the hand and win themselves a top score. Well played, ladies! • Dec. 13 was a very busy afternoon as the bridge club held a Christmas party and 17 tables of players challenged for the club championship. It turned out to be a near run thing. For though Irene Churchill and Sheila Perras took the crown

with a 59.82 per cent score, Elgin and Sheila 1: Carol Sulpher - David Sulpher Duke (59.26) and Gary Churchill and Leanne 2: Ernie Berndt - Eric Brown Cheliak (58.63) were right on their heels. 3: Ronda Vaillancourt - Lila Paddock • Dec. 20 also saw some interesting results. Dec. 13: Section D Board #19 saw a wild variety of contracts at1: Irene Churchill - Sheila Perras tempted in Hearts/Spades/Diamonds/Clubs and 2: Iris Winston - Gloria Orr No-Trump; sadly not all were successful. 3: Tom Sewter - Sharon Sewter • On Dec. 27, Board #14 confirmed once more Dec. 20 how fickle the game of bridge can be. The six 1: Bob Bouchard - Garry Irving times the board was played in four spades, it made 2: Carol Sulpher - David Sulpher 5; but when the hand was played in a 5 spade con3: Ruth Grant - Mary McCann tract, it failed. Truly a mysterious game! Dec 27 Congratulations to the North-South winners 1: Carol Sulpher - David Sulpher from: 2: Anna McCallum - Gwen Latendresse Dec. 6: 3: Ed McCann - Guy Vaillancourt 1: Irene Churchill - Sheila Perras 2: Carol Sulpher - David Sulpher Congratulations to the East-West winners 3: Bob Bouchard - Garry Irving from: Dec 13: Section C Dec. 6:
