AND THE

tlepack@metroland.com

For the last 10 years, Hospice Renfrew has been normalizing the process of dying. The agency offers much comfort to patients in their final days. A piece of strawberry and vanilla cake sits on the table beside Robbie Kraft’s bed and she places her hand on a birdwatching book. Maureen Sullivan-Bentz, Hospice Renfrew’s executive director, says this is the best room to birdwatch. Kraft’s eyes light up and she seems full of life talking about the birds she has seen in her three-week stay away from her home in Pembroke. “It’s been a rough road … here it reminds me of home,” said Kraft. “If it gets any better, I just can’t explain it. I don’t have to lift a finger.” So far she has seen two partridges, as identified by the book. “I’ve got to make sure I am naming the right birds,” she says with a smile and a twinkle in her eye. She said if she had the help at home it would be different, alluding to why she needed to come to hospice. See HOSPICE, page 2

“Everything is good here, they will have me all fattened up,” she says with a chuckle. “It’s just beautiful, I am receiving phenomenal care and I just can’t explain how good it is here.” Her husband chimes in. “It’s so good she doesn’t want to go home,” Don added. Living: it is what Hospice Renfrew is about. “You come to hospice to live and not to die,” said Jim MacKillican, who went to his first meeting for hospice in 2005. He is now an advisor on the Hospice Renfrew board. “You come here to live in the best possible way.” Connie Legg has been one of the driving forces behind Hospice Renfrew from its first meeting. She now sits as an advisor on the board. Her proudest accomplishment over these 10 years is how they have normalized a little bit what a residential hospice is. “It’s not a scary and dark place, it is quite the opposite,” said Legg who admits the process was a slow start because people did not know what a residential hospice was. “It was a really good idea and we were really passionate, but we had no guarantee that it would work. It was, ‘if we build it will they come?’ I think there was a little bit of a stigma about going to a place where people die … We have become

Since then it has served about 1,000 families who have come to receive palliative care in their dying days. The six-bed facility serves all of Renfrew County with all programs and services free of charge. However, Hospice Renfrew is required to fundraise half of the annual budget, which is $630,000. All board members acknowledge the amazing community support. “The fact is it’s just such a compassionate part of our community and we have volunteers that are helping to operate this facility,” said Legg of the 70 active volunteers who provide 7,000 volunteer hours of service each year. “We have community support that people are willing to give of both time and money to keep us a float.” When it comes to marking the monumental anniversary, they decided to give back to the community. “We wanted to thank the community for the financial support and engage the community,” said SullivanBentz. Some of the events are fundraisers and the others are more about awareness. Events include: Feb. 11 at the Arnprior Library: Children’s Super Hero Meet and Greet; April 6: Paint Night at Arnprior Library; May 6: Hike for Hospice; June 21: County Wide Longest Day of Golf; July 7: Secret Garden Tour; Aug. 17: Ai-

kenhead’s Classic Golf Tournament; Sept. 23: Yoga Retreat; Nov. 10: Hoot Reboot; and in December the Holly Jolly Radiothon. Another new initiative is the Power of 10 campaign, in which 10 family members or friends each raise $100 for a total of $1,000 (or for kids $10 each for a total of $100). “Each $100 - that is one trip to the grocery store - and if 10 people raise $1,000 that pays the hydro bill for the month,” said Sullivan-Bentz. “We are really trying to show people what their dollar gets.” Hospice is also partnering with St. Joseph’s Catholic High School, which has chosen Hospice Renfrew as its charity of choice for the next two years. The students have toured the facility, raised funds via a walk, and even baked 30 tins of cookies for the residents over the holidays. “It’s all about engaging the younger generation on what hospice and palliative care is all about,” said SullivanBentz. And as they look to fundraise and move forward into the next 10 years and beyond it is that next generation who is already showing they are up for the challenge. Renfrew church does not click to accept changes to summer jobs program TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com

A routine application for summer jobs funding has turned into a battle between two key elements of the Charter of Rights and Freedom. Renfrew’s St. Francis Xavier Parish has been a successful applicant to the Canada Summer Jobs program for the last three years. It has used the funds to hire a student to help cut the grass at the church’s cemetery and maintenance on the grounds. Rev. Kerry Brennan explains it served two purposes. “It has certainly helped to keep cost down and helped a student have employment in the summer,” said Brennan. Brennan has applied for the grant funding again this year. However he did not click one section of the online application, a new section with which he does not agree. It states: “The Employer declares, represents, attests and warrants that: … both the job and the organization’s core mandate respect individual human rights in Canada, including the values underlying the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms as well as other rights. “These include reproductive rights and the right to be free from discrimination on the basis of sex, religion, race, national or ethnic origin, colour, mental or physical disability or sexual orientation, or gender identity or expression.”

Brennan printed off the application and sent it in along with a covering letter. “We did not check that off,” said Brennan. “The government is doling out public money and they have no moral right to shut out taxpayers or organizations who do not share their values.” He believes this will affect a lot of young students looking for summer employment. “I don’t think it’s fair at all, the government is imposing their values on everyone,” said Brennan. “We are a church group and we have our own values, they can’t impose them. Everyone has the right to practice their own religion and that is enshrined in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.” A fundamental freedom under the charter states “Everyone has the following fundamental freedoms: (a) freedom of conscience and religion; (b) freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression.” Rev. Ryan Holly, from Our Lady of Fatima Parish, has not applied for this specific federal grant but put a strongly worded message in his church bulletin, as he felt it was an issue of religious freedom and as so it was his right to inform people that this is a matter of conscious and belief. “I see it as problematic in a country as diverse as ours on many issues, there are varying opinions on an issue such as this, and you can’t take part of a particular party belief and make it a hinge for all Canadians to attest to, to even apply for public funding,” said Holly. Last year Our Lady of Fatima success-

fully applied for an accessibility grant for its elevator. “If changes can be made for the summer job program, can they made for all grants?” Holly questioned. “It’s the principle, we didn’t have a right to receive the funding, we did have the right to apply and because of our merits we were successful. “Everyone should have the right to apply for public funding. It shouldn’t have to matter what we believe in, which is protected under the charter.” Cheryl Gallant MP for Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke, recently stated in a press release that Canadians should be very concerned that the Government of Canada is basing funding decisions on whether or not the applicant holds a certain belief. “The Liberal party is changing the rules around which employers can qualify for funding to hire students through the Canada Summer Jobs program to try and ensure that groups who hold different opinions about moral and ethical issues will not be able to get funding. “This policy isn’t about the activities or services an organization is engaged in, the policy is about targeting the personal beliefs of the individuals who run those organizations,” said Gallant in the press release. The deadline for the Canada Summer Jobs program is Feb. 2, so only time will tell if those groups who submit a paper copy will still receive funding. In his bulletin message, Holly reminds his parishioners that faith is not a private event,

they must form it into integrity and holiness to always seek to live justly in the world. “This means the church being the voice for the least among us: the unborn child, but also the children living in poverty, the unemployed, the refugee, the elderly and those on their deathbeds,” Holly concludes his message. “Despite what the prime minister and the minister of employment have stated in recent days, our church cannot separate our beliefs and practices from our core mandate because our core mandate is not a collection of separable tasks or functions, but is rather a person: Jesus Christ.”

Postal union asking for more services, offices to become community hubs DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com

Area municipal leaders are being asked to support postal services and workers now that a federal review has tabled 45 recommendations. One suggestion by the Standing Committee on Government Operations and Estimates is to convert postal offices into “community hubs”. Councils in Renfrew, McNab/Braeside, Horton, Madawaska Valley and elsewhere were provided a copy of a letter sent to Carla Qualtrough, minister of Public Services and Procurement. Renfrew and Horton have sent letters of support. The Liberal government is considering, among other suggestions, a restoration of door-to-door delivery nation-wide after the former Conservative government began instituting community mailboxes (CMB). Diane Mitchell with the Canadian Union of Postal Workers spoke to McNab/Braeside council at the Dec. 19 meeting, asking for backing on such issues as: · Maintain Canada Post’s moratorium on CMB conversion and restore door-to-door delivery for all households that lost it; · Maintain the moratorium on post office closures and examine how

Canada Post and municipalities. Mitchell argued that postal services are an economic positive for rural communities in particular. But postal workers could be tasked with other duties, such as checking on elderly residents. Post offices could offer recharging stations for electric vehicles. An idea tossed around last year was for Canada Post to offer banking services in rural areas. Deputy Mayor Brian Armsden asked for more details on internet and cellular service improvements. Mitchell had no further information, but did mention residents could, in the future, access internet services on a computer at post offices. Council will consider supporting the letter at a later date. Renfrew council approved a motion to petition the federal government to continue door-to-door delivery and expand postal services. “I am totally in favour of door-todoor delivery and I am not in favour of postal boxes as a number of corners in Renfrew would be affected,” Derek Dunn/Metroland said Mayor Don Eady. The Sunshine Coach Service (SCS) received two boosts at Renfrew council on Jan. 9. Council approved $247,625 from the provincial government under the Dedicated Gas Tax Funds for Public Transportation Program. The program has been running since 2004 and as the SCS is the only public transportation in Renfrew they receive the funds. “It’s obviously quite important to our operating cash flow, its operations and capital combination,” said Norm Dagg, executive director for the SCS. “Our service runs Monday to Friday, for weekend services by appointment by end of business on Friday. We have pretty extensive coverage on weekends.” The funds are held as deferred revenue by the town and disbursed, typically twice per year to reimburse the coach service for eligible expenditures incurred in the previous year. Coun. Tom Sidney asked if the town had any say in how the service is provided. Treasurer Keray O’Reilly explained they do have a formalized agreement with them but it is quite dated. “If we are paying for a service we should have an agreement with them,” said reeve Peter Emon. “There has to be some restructuring and you will likely see something come forward as with every group we give money to.” He referenced the recent memorandum of understanding with the Seniors’ Home Support Renfrew and Area and one currently being working on for the Birthplace NHA/NHL

Museum. Mayor Don Eady added that it was not a slight on anyone just doing business in a good way. The second piece of good news was the approval for the town to purchase a 2018 Elkhart Coach EC II Lift Equipped Bus from Overland Custom Coach for $81,414. The new bus is being funded from the provincial and federal governments under the Public Transit Infrastructure Fund, which covered 50 per cent of the bus. The other 50 per cent was fundraised by the Friends of Disabled through the Ride the Bus campaign for the SCS, which means there was no cost to municipal taxpayers. Dagg is expecting the new bus, that can hold four wheel chairs and seats ten people, similar to their current bus, will be on the road by the end of April. “It will replace our current 12 year old bus and we are very excited as our bus is very busy and does a lot of day programs,” said Dagg. “It serves the Bonnechere Manor day program every week, among other programs.” Treasurer O’Reilly explained due to the requirements of the grant council, the town will own the bus and it will be leased to the Sunshine Coach Services under the terms of a capital (sales-type) lease, which will have no impact on the town’s 2018 operations and will have no effect on the town’s financial statements in future years. The agreement reached will see the SCS pay their share of the bus on the first day of the lease agreement.

FROM THE DESK OF DONALD E. BROOME - COBDEN Here’s something you should know about the Conservative nomination as it’s not an election, it’s the selection of our federal parliamentary representative, and anyone be they Liberal, Conservative or NDP can vote for one of the candidates, even if they are not going to vote for the Conservative Party on October 19th, 2019. However, regardless of your political party affiliation, in order to vote you must purchase a Conservative Party membership at a cost of 15 dollars, without which you cannot vote! This does not mean you are a Conservative or intend to become one, as all you get when you purchase a Conservative membership is the right to vote during the nomination. After this you can vote for the political party of your choice, and many voters who are not Conservatives are going to do so in order to give someone else a chance to represent them. Many voters who are not Conservatives but voted for Mrs. Gallant all along desire a change, and the current nomination process is their first opportunity in 17 years to help bring about that change. Every political contest comes down to the numbers because whoever gets the most votes wins. And thus all those who could have and should have voted “But Didn’t” - have only themselves to blame if they don’t like the result, as a consequence of failing to do what they could have and should have “But Didn’t.” This article is not about who to vote for, but to inform people about the requirement necessary to vote, because when choosing your federal representative whether it be Cheryl Gallant or Michael Coates, your wishes alone won’t count for anything if you don’t vote for the candidate of your choice. The democratic process is of no effect unless you avail yourself of it - and the deadline to buy a Conservative membership is January 31st. Steer clear this winter Safe winter driving requires drivers slowing down and anticipating hazards before they become a problem. This can’t be done if the vehicle’s windows are covered in frost, snow or ice. Ontario Provincial Police would like to remind us that the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario provides fines of $110 to motorists who drive without a clear view; but as we know, the consequences can be worse if you injure someone. Give yourself some extra time and make sure you have a clear view before you put your vehicle in gear. While on the topic of snow clearing, there are plenty of blue and yellow lights flashing on the highways as snow-removal equipment is in use after heavy snowfalls. Municipalities have a system or protocol for plowing roadways and sidewalks. Lower-priority locations will take longer to get because that’s the way it is. Although we encourage anyone who has an issue with the snow-clearing system in his or her community to voice those concerns to the appropriate municipal official, please be patient and help where you can by not leaving your ve-

hicles where they would block winter road maintenance efforts. There’s also the issue of taking snow from private property and placing it onto a public roadway or sidewalk. This might not seem like a big deal, but plowing snow to where it could pose a public safety hazard to motorists and pedestrians is an offence. The vast majority of property owners and contractors don’t do it, but it’s something that can cause problems unnecessarily. Another scenario which is more of an issue is motorists who do not clear ice and snow from their vehicles and then pose a threat because of their limited visibility or the effect that flying ice can have on other drivers. Making more of an effort to minimize the risk posed by winter weather and its effect on travelling seems like a reasonable request. We should expect our provincial and municipal governments to provide adequate road maintenance services, but some of us can do a better job of assisting them by not getting in their way when the snow flies.

Minimum wage hikes will not help the poor To the editor: As of Jan. 1, the minimum wage in Ontario is now set at $14 per hour, benefitting the bottom lines of many of Ontario’s workers and stirring continuous excitement and controversy. Endless arguments have been made back and forth that the move will kill jobs and hurt businesses, or create jobs and help businesses. One thing that the minimum wage increase will surely not do, however, is cause a decrease in poverty. It would seem intuitive that minimum wage increases would necessarily empower the poor. Workers with the lowest wages tend to be poorer and therefore closer to the deficiency of poverty. Yet in reality those who work at minimum wage tend to live in households shared with multiple earners whose shared

earnings are above the poverty line. Access to minimum wage work is generally a middleclass privilege. By contrast, those who live in poverty tend to lack access to employment altogether, or only have part-time work above the minimum wage. This was the conclusion of the review of research by the Minimum Wage Advisory Panel struck by the Ontario Liberal government in 2013. Likewise, a 2011 paper in the journal of Labour Economics found that a 10 per cent rise in the minimum wage is associated with a four-six per cent increase in the percentage of families living under low income cut offs. For the non-working poor, the minimum wage increase may make them worse off than before in chances of gaining employment. Employers will be more encouraged to replace low-skilled labour with auto-

mation and technology. Of course the money spent from higher resulting wages would create new jobs elsewhere, but the newly created jobs will not likely employ the most trapped Ontarians. For years the Ontario Liberal government complied with the recommendations of the advisory panel that minimum wage increases be tied to the rate of inflation. But then suddenly in 2017 the Liberals decided that was not good enough, and proposed the recent changes that would see the minimum rise to $15.00 per hour by 2019. Now what is more likely, that the Liberals accelerated minimum wage increases because of new evidence, or that the Liberals are making short-sighted cynical calculations in the face of an imminent election? Make no mistake: the minimum wage increase is not in-

tended to empower the poor so much as cravenly appeal to middle-class voters. The lobby in support of minimum wage increases speaks with a loud and unified voice, whereas the Ontarians whose stake is in empowering the non-working poor are a more disorganized force. Ontarians pushing for poverty reduction should unite in support of reforming social assistance to a form of basic income and reduced welfare bureaucracy. They and their representative politicians should play no part in any scheme that leaves the unemployed poor lagging behind. To the editor: Concerned Citizens of Renfrew County and Area, Old Fort William Cottagers’ Association and many other intervenors in the upcoming CNSC relicensing hearing Jan. 23-25 in Pembroke are not opposed to the Chalk River facility. We are in favour of strict regulatory oversight and the best quality, state-of-the art facilities that will keep radioactive waste out of our air and water, as recommended by the International Atomic Energy Agency. There are nuclear waste liabilities at the Chalk River site that have been estimated at $7.6 billion. It is clear that there will be jobs at Chalk River for many generations, looking after these wastes and keeping them out of the biosphere. Chalk River could be a leader in responsible radioactive waste management, creating facilities we could all be proud of and that would set an example for the rest of the world to follow. Michael Coates brings much to the Conservative table To the editor: After reading the biography of Renfrew-NipissingPembroke federal Conservative nomination candidate Michael Coates I felt it was important enough to be considered by the entire electorate of our county. To begin with I met with Mr. Coates recently for several hours, during which time I found him to be an honest, forthright and well informed individual for whom I have great respect - and those of you who know me well over the years

also know that I would never say something like this about anyone unless it were true. After speaking with Mr. Coates at length, it is my personal opinion that there has never been anyone in the history of Renfrew county politics, who brings to the table the exemplary academic credentials - the proven business accomplishments both here and abroad - as well as the requisite political contacts so necessary to effectively place Renfrew County on the front burner

down in Ottawa. Most especially so with respect to attracting manufacturing concerns, encouraging tourism and recreation, creating new jobs, and generally improving the overall economic and development opportunities in our region. Indeed, I regard Mr. Coates as being one of the best qualified and capable individuals one could ever ask for as a parliamentary representative, and most especially so with respect to the future advancement and prosperity of our county’s citi-

Totalitarian tactics in Canada? To the editor: I was shocked recently to find out that the Liberal government, with the full blessing of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, has included a check-box on the application form for summer job grants, that forces applicants to “declare, represent, attest and warrant that both the job and the organization’s core mandate respect individual human rights in Canada, including the values underlying the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms as well as other rights. These include reproductive rights and the right to be free from discrimination on the basis of sex, religion, race, national or ethnic origin, colour, mental or physical disability or sexual orientation, or gender identity or expression.” This obviously eliminates any employer that disagrees with Trudeau’s views on abortion. Our democratic leader has adopted totalitarian methods. Attest to his stance on abortion or you won’t be eligible for federal funding. In Canada?! Perhaps this is a good wake-up call. He is showing how far he is willing to go to impose

his moral views on the nation. The very person that should be a champion of human rights for all Canadians is willing to discriminate against any group or individual that believes abortion is not a reproductive right – and this is indeed a core belief for many Canadians. Fortunately, there will be some court challenges, and even the leader of the Abortion Rights Coalition of Canada is asking for the wording to be changed, but it may be too late for this year’s program. Employment Minister Patty Hajdu advises religious groups to check the box and apply anyway. She just doesn’t want applications from groups founded solely to oppose abortions. That’s cold comfort. In his review of this issue, Father Raymond De Souza summarizes it well: “That’s the totalitarian ethos, a cabinet minister who advises pastors to make false statements to qualify for programs their own parishioners pay taxes to fund.” In Canada?! Cheryl Gallant should welcome opportunity to defend position To the editor: Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke deserves a credible federal representative who is respected by the Conservative caucus, and who can bring more jobs and positive recognition to our riding. Mr. Mike Coates who has been involved with the federal Conservatives since the 1980s, most recently as the debate prep team leader for former Prime Minister Stephen Harper, would appear to be just that individual. He clearly has the enthusiasm and vision that this riding so desperately needs. I would think that after nearly 18 years our local MP would welcome the opportunity to defend her position, to highlight the progress she has made in the riding, and to propose how she intends to improve the quality of life in Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke . I am sure constituents would appreciate a fair and open debate to

discuss riding issues and allow local Conservative party members the opportunity to compare the competency of the two individuals. Unfortunately the local riding association, which is supposedly an impartial body, does not seem to support the opportunity for an individual to effectively challenge the incumbent. This is evidenced by the very limited timelines they have applied to the nomination process and sale of memberships prior to a nomination meeting. Let us hope that anyone who favours a fair and open nomination process and who wants our riding to have a fresh credible voice in parliament takes the time to purchase a membership in the Conservative party by Feb. 1 so they can have their voice heard on nomination day. Dr. Susan Taylor Pembroke

zens and their families. That being said, I want it to be clear that in no way do I propose to diminish Mrs. Cheryl Gallant of whom I am quite fond, for she has carried the banner of conservative values most admirably over these many years, for which she is to be highly commended. As for any personal recom-

mendation coming from myself with respect to influencing the coming nomination, there will be none. Instead I will leave that decision to the electorate, as indeed it should be, because the record of Mr. Coates’ credentials speaks for itself, and as such has no need of either endorsement or partisan embellishment, thus whatever will

be will be. Thank you for taking the time to read this letter folks. I trust it will be of interest to you. To read Mr. Coates’ qualifications and accomplishments visit votemikecoates.com Donald E. Broome Cobden

Military training in Calabogie

It’s just another day at the office for Sgt. Sebastian Roy and Cpl. Jeremy Hillson from the 3rd Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment (3RCR) on Jan. 18 during an ice climbing demonstration for local media in Calabogie. Approximately 300 soldiers were stationed at Calabogie Peaks from Jan. 14 to 26 for the Winter Complex Terrain School course (they will leave the area Friday). Hillson has participated in the ice training for the last three years and says it’s a chance to prepare for a different type of terrain. “It takes a little bit of guts to put yourself on an ice face but once you do it a couple of times and you trust the equipment and the guys below, then it’s just another day at work,” he said. Centre, a C-8 rifle rests on a rucksack during a stop in the training, also visible is the glacier travel clamp the soldiers use while ice climbing. Far right: the 10-man arctic tents that were set up on the golf course grounds, which were packed with snow to keep the heat in and wind out.

Maj. Tim Kenney, acting commanding officer of 3RCR and Acting Regimental Sgt. Maj., Master Warrant Officer Trevor Lavallee stand over a topographical map of Calabogie Peaks. The soldiers completed a number of different training exercises, including snowmobile, downhill and cross country skiing, ice climbing, snipers and basic winter survival skills. Kenney says training like this is important, as the arctic is a key area not only for Canada but the world. Being stationed in Calabogie for the training has a number of different advantages such as a novel and complex terrain and they are able to be involved in the community. “It’s also a refresher of winter skills to be able to separate from our building … it becomes hard after three or four days without a shower,” said Kenney. “It tests your mettle to see if you can do the drills and skills when you are cold and tired and that’s important to test.”

St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Calabogie welcomed members of 3RCR on Thursday afternoon. There were a number of different stations set up for the children to explore, including a tent with hot chocolate, skiing around the school yard, a medic pack, different scope tools and more. The chipmunk that doesn’t sleep With this winter’s crazy rollercoaster ride of temperatures, it’s easy to understand why some animals that normally are not seen out and about in winter have been active on occasion. Raccoons and striped skunks typically slumber away most of this season of cold in their winter dens but on warm winter days they will make an appearance. A raccoon’s winter den is usually inside a hollow tree where the animal depends on its body fat accumulated in the fall to keep it warm. A winter den, which is different than a summer den, usually contains a number of raccoons all curled up together. As many as 23 raccoons have been found sharing one den. Skunks, on the other hand, usually spend winter in solitary confinement in dens deep underground. Also, unlike raccoons, they line their dens with plant material, even plugging the den’s entrance with plant material before retiring for the winter. However, neither raccoons nor skunks are true hibernators. Their body temperatures and heart rates fall only slightly below normal levels, bringing their owners into a dormant stage called lethargy. Under warm conditions, both species readily become active. On the other hand, a true hibernator is an

animal whose heart and respiration rates become so greatly depressed that they are barely perceptible. Its heart rate drops to one so slow that someone could easily conclude the animal was dead. Those animals enter a deep sleep that is only briefly broken a couple of times each winter. Groundhogs fall into that category and, perhaps surprising to you, are the largest true hibernators in the world. When a warm snap occurs in winter, as has happened twice in recent weeks, groundhogs do not even blink an eye. In winter, eastern chipmunks experience a type of dormancy that is different from all of the aforementioned animals. Unlike striped skunks, raccoons and groundhogs, chipmunks store food for the winter because they do not sleep for long periods of time and must eat. They awaken every few days (usually between four and six) to visit the lavatory, raid the pantry and take out the garbage before retiring to their sleeping chambers. All of those activities take place underground. Chipmunks create complex burrows with multiple chambers of which one or more are used for food storage, another for sleeping and others for disposing of body wastes and litter. When food such as acorns is plentiful and large amounts are cached away, the pantries sustain

Normally not seen in winter, this Eastern Chipmunk is making regular appearances to gather cracked corn. their maker through winter and early spring. However, when insufficient supplies are stored, chipmunks do starve. But this winter I’ve been watching a chipmunk regularly gather seeds and cracked corn from under my feeders. With cheeks bulging, it runs across the snow and vanishes down a hole under a boxwood shrub. Perhaps it ran out of

food prematurely or had something happen to its stores (chipmunks are known to raid the stores of other chipmunks). Regardless, the little fellow is fortunate to have found a supply of food so close to its den. Or perhaps it has a sleeping disorder and discovered it has a penchant for corn! Renfrew Canadian Tire bids farewell to Bill Kenopic after 60 years SHERRY HAAIMA sherry.haaima@metroland.com

After an impressive career with one of Canada’s most recognizable brands, Bill Kenopic is hanging up his hat. Bill, who has logged 50 years as a Canadian Tire dealer and 60 years in total with the company, explains that his retailing journey started in Renfrew as an 18-year-old. For 10 years he climbed the management ladder in the old Renfrew Canadian Tire on Raglan Street under the dealer Howard Greenfield. “I applied for and was awarded my first store in Bancroft in 1968,” he said. After three years, Bill and wife Ann and their growing family moved to Aurora, Ont. to a larger store. After four years there, what the Kenopics describe as “an incredible opportunity” arose: the rare chance of getting back to their hometown — Renfrew. “I’ve been fortunate to serve my hometown community for 43 years,” he said. Within those first few years back in town a fire completely destroyed the store. “The task of starting over at the new location (450 O’Brien Road) was my biggest challenge,” said Bill.

Sherry Haaima/Metroland

Renfrew Canadian Tire dealer Bill Kenopic and his wife Ann plan to spend more time with their family and do some travelling. Bill is retiring this week after a career that spans 60 years. The second biggest hurdle of his tenure was the second relocation to the existing site in the spring of 2004 with the addition of the gas bar in 2006.

Bill also took on responsibility for a satellite store in Shawville, Que., in 1997, overseeing its relocation to a new larger facility, which ultimately helped double sales. Throughout the years, Bill led by example and main-

tained a single vision — providing the highest level of customer service and presentation. He expresses his thanks to the community for its continued support and patronage. Bill said all his memories are good

ones. “He ran a pretty tight ship,” said Ann, adding Canadian Tire was a wonderful company for which to work. And Renfrew was a great place to work and raise their three children, said the couple, who will celebrate their 59th wedding anniversary this year. As far as retirement goes, it’s a little bittersweet but Bill and Ann do have plans. “I’m looking forward to it,” said Bill. “We’re going to travel.” They plan to visit their daughter and grandchildren in Florida and have their eyes on France as a possible destination. Canadian Tire staffer Peter Ross worked with Bill for about 15 years. “He’s pretty passionate about retailing and the customers,” said Ross. “He was here every day, it’s part of his routine, so it’s going to be a big change for him.” Bill was not known to spend a lot of time in his office. “He liked handling the products and talking to customers,” he said. Ross said he will miss seeing Bill out on the floor, as well as the regular chats they enjoyed. Bill extends warm welcome wishes to new dealer Paul Lamoureux and his wife Laury, who arrive in Renfrew this week from Drayton Valley, a little town west of Edmonton.

2017, launched in April 2017 and runs until March 2019. In Renfrew County this fiscal year, there were 40 applicants. Nwosu is one of only two in the program from Renfrew. Sadler, a business consultant with Enterprise Renfrew County, praises Nwosu for her work ethic. “Ro is a very dynamic and dedicated woman,” she said. “She sets her goals and aims to achieve them. She’s very outgoing as well, and she was a pleasure to work with.” The next Starter Company Plus information intake sessions are set for April 3 and April 17 at the County of Renfrew building. Positivity moves from her body. Ro Nwosu is pounding out perfection at her recently opened yoga studio in downtown Renfrew called Move·ment. On Jan. 10, she was pounding out instructions during her lunchtime pound class. With each movement, she called out encouragement for each one of the participants and the smile on her face was a clear sign she was also having fun. Nwosu moved to Renfrew five years ago and is a registered yoga and movement teacher. As she cools down after the class, she is tired but so excited about her new business that she launched in November. Move-ment is a studio that provides a modern and refreshing approach to traditional yoga and fitness classes. “The studio is a place for everybody,” she really emphasizes the word “body,” as Nwosu says they do not judge. “It’s about creating sustainability for your everyday life, to move well

and often. We are inclusive, it’s a good workout, there is no judgment and there is something for everyone. We want to make sure people can create a routine to have an active lifestyle.” She is so positive and strives to make her programs relatable. She often ends her classes with this simple message: “Speak kindly, think clearly and be mindful.” Nwosu is also very appreciative for the support she received from Enterprise Renfrew County’s Starter Company Plus. “I would like to thank Enterprise Renfrew County for guiding and helping me with the ability to create and get this studio in order,” said Nwosu. “Colleen Sadler is amazing.” Starter Company Plus is a government of Ontario program delivered by Enterprise Renfrew County, where applicants receive free business training, advice and mentoring. Successful applicants also compete for a chance at a $4,000 grant, which Nwosu received. Starter Company Plus is a new program that was announced in January REQUEST FOR TENDER RFT #2018-07

Wrestling season underway RENFREW VIPERS WRESTLING CLUB

Vipers Wrestling Club registration was held on Sept. 18, marking their 29th season of providing the youth in the community with a chance to try an individual sport with a team environment. The Vipers have attended five tournaments so far this season. The first tournament included a day trip to Montreal for the Quebec Open on Nov. 25. This tournament hosted clubs from all over eastern Ontario and western Quebec. The Vipers competed against some hard competition in Montreal, but held their own in the end, with Bradley Fraser, Kadance Moore and Savana Pinsent receiving gold medals; Jackson Bates, Keltey Murphy, Carter Troke, Kiley McClure, Brooklyn Holley, Hayden Ladouceur and Ian Sully receiving silver medals; and Addison Brophy, Ayden DeBruyn and Jolie Brisco receiving bronze medals. On Dec. 2, the Vipers’ bantams and cadets travelled to Kingston to compete at the Ontario Winter Games qualifier, where wrestlers compete for the chance to represent eastern Ontario at the games from March 1 to March 3 in Orillia, Ont. The Vipers are proud to say that all bantams and cadets qualified to wrestle at the games. On Dec. 2, the Vipers’ cadets and juveniles competed in Kingston at the Bill McLeod wrestling tournament. This tournament also hosted

some very tough teams, but the Vipers held their own, taking home three out five possible medals. The following wrestlers received medals: Savana Pinsent, gold; Jolie Brisco and Lily Warren, silver. On Dec. 9, the senior Vipers team travelled to Brampton, Ont., to compete at the Matmen Classic. The wrestlers represented the club very well, wrestling hard and supporting each other. Savana Pinsent placed first. On Jan. 13, the Vipers braved the winter storm and drove to Barrie, Ont., to compete in the K-Bay wrestling tournament, taking with them 21 dedicated wrestlers and two coaches. The day brought with it hard competition and a lot of matches. Medal placing is increasing with every tournament. First: Savana Pinsent, Brooklyn Holley, Kadance Moore and Bradley Fraser. Second: Chloe Gibbons, Ariel Gibbons, Jackson Bates, Aaron Sarsfield, Jack Mahoney, Cameron Fraser, Lily Warren, Aidan Kelly, Carter Proulx and Gavan Robertson. Third: Hayden Ladouceur, Teegan Tabbert, Cater Troke and Carter Holley. If your child is interested in wrestling, please contact your grade or high school about joining their school wrestling program. The club is also looking for new coaches or past wrestlers looking to coach. Find us on Facebook at Vipers Wrestling Club in the Ottawa Valley.

A spiel of benefits and a recent championship at the Renfrew Curling Club For the last 15 years, Bert Virgin has held a friendly spiel that provides benefits to the curlers involved, the Renfrew Curling Club and a local charity. The curlers enjoy a day of curling fun and great food. The club benefits from the kitchen and bar proceeds as well as introducing many new curlers to the sport of curling. And this year the Sunshine Coach benefits as the money made from the spiel was do-

What started out as a fun day hosted by Bert for his children, their friends and parents with a potluck meal, has evolved over the years into a spiel for 64-plus curlers, many of them new to the sport. It has raised a good chunk of money for local charities and benefitted the club in numerous ways. We certainly owe a great deal of thanks and praise to Bert for all of his work and

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Midget Wolves come away finalists from International Silver Stick The Renfrew Midget Timberwolves Escaping Renfrew team advanced to the International Silver Stick in Forest, Ont., on Jan. 5-7. Their first game was against the Ennismore Eagles and they pulled off a 3-1 win, they lost their second game to the Wallaceburg Lakers 5-2 and had another win in their third game against the South Huron Sabres 4-2. “These wins placed them second going into the semifinals against the Ennismore Eagles again. This game proved to be a bit more challenging for the Timberwolves after Ennismore has figured out some of our team strategies and plays, but they got the 4-3 win sending them into the finals against the second-place ranked team in Ontario, the Petrolia Oilers,” says a press release. “The Renfrew Timberwolves played hard but couldn’t get the win placing them in the finalist position.” Officials are pleased with the team’s success and grateful for the community support. “Well done team and coaches on a huge accomplishment,” says the release. “And thank you so much to all our generous sponsors and those who contributed to make this tournament possible.”

MCGREGOR, MARY EVA CAROLINE

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our Mother, Mary Eva Caroline McGregor on Friday January 12th, surrounded by love at Hospice Renfrew, after a short battle with cancer. She was born and raised in the Renfrew area before adventuring to live on the ranches of Alberta, to live on a boat in the waters off Vancouver and then to return home to Renfrew to spend time with family and friends. Her greatest joy was her family. She was so proud of her children, Rick and Kim, Julie and Al and Loni and Tyler but got the most joy watching her grandchildren grow to be exceptional people. Alysha, Aleena, Alexandra, Vik, Aden, Cameron, Olivia and Brody filled her heart with love. We will all miss her deeply. We would like to specifically thank her cousins Graham and June. Graham and June spent many hours with Mom, bringing her treats and sending updates to us during her illness. We cannot express how much their love and support meant to our Mom and to us. We will be forever grateful. We would also like to thank everyone for providing support to our family during the last few months and we would like to thank everyone who went out of their way to call or visit our Mom. Each visit made her so happy and made it easier for us who could not be there. We would like to thank the Hospice Renfrew who provided excellent care for her over the past few months. The staff and volunteers at the Hospice are very exceptional people and made Mom and all those that visited feel as comfortable as possible. All Professional Services were entrusted to Zohr Family Funeral Home, Renfrew (formerly Anderson) At her request there will not be a funeral but the family will hold a graveside memorial at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice Renfrew online at www.zohrfuneralhome.com

Penelope Elizabeth (Betty) Reece 1931-2018 Passed away after a short battle with cancer. She will be sadly missed by daughters Kathleen, Karen, son Timothy (Lucia), granddaughters Krista, Karlee, grandson William and his mother Beth. Pre-deceased by her husband of 51 years, Clare Jamieson, who always wanted to marry a redhead. He did, as she dyed her hair as a surprise for the wedding. Known for being able to move a car from one side of the garage to the other without opening the doors and being the BEST folder of laundry. She said all she wanted for Christmas was her family to be with her (and meant it). Betty was a talented folk artist, both painting and rugs, prolific reader of “Nurse Betty” books and an okay cook, as her understanding of recipe ingredients was creative. Special thanks goes to the many exceptional caregivers at the Cooksville Care Center who showed such compassion and generosity. At Betty’s request, there will be a private family service in the Spring with interment in Windsor. In lieu of flowers, please consider supporting your local arts organization. In loving memory of a dear wife and best friend who passed away 1 year ago, January 26, 2017 at 5:25 am. I remember the day I met you, and the day God made you mine, I remember the day God took you, And will remember “Till the end of time”. We made our vows together, Until death do we part, But the day God took you from me, my whole world feel apart. Sometimes I think I’m dreaming, I can’t believe its true, That I can go on living when I no longer have you. And the memories of the happy 68 years, When were together with our 8 children, The joys, the tears, the love, the fears, Will stay with me and family, And when I’m sad and lonely, And everything goes wrong, I seem to hear you whisper, Cheer up and carry on. Each time I see your picture, You seem to smile and say, Don’t cry I’m only sleeping, We’ll meet again someday. Till we meet again, Love always, Gordon and Family

recruiting 10 more doctors, which will cost a million dollars.” RAHSV estimate there are 2,400 “orphan patients” without a family doctor in the area so Emon is thankful for the support. “We really appreciate the support and it is nice to see the art community get involved,” said Emon. Bradley’s show at town hall will run until the end of March and he was moved by hearing a number of his friends do not have family doctors. “It’s all about having a sense of community,” said Bradley. “It helps out the cause for the community and it’s a win-win situation. They can have something beautiful in their home and support a good cause.” Bradley grew up in northern Ontario and says he grew up with an affinity for nature. The pieces that he has on display are inspired by the Group of Seven. “It’s representational of nature, its evolution of the Group of Seven, there is a lot of energy

and very colourful,” said Bradley. He has studied at the Ontario College of Art and Design in the fine arts program and graduated with honours in the program with a major in drawing and painting. He also taught a course in dreams and symbology at the Ottawa School of Art in 2004. In 2013 he was accepted into the Bittersweet Gallery in Burnstown to teach and paint and in 2017 he moved to Renfrew to continue his artistic career with “renewed vigour to teach, inspire, give to aspiring artists, plus build my art career as a professional and successful artist.” Bradley is also offering weekend Art Workshops at the Renfrew Recreation Centre starting on Jan. 27 until March 18 from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Some of the topics covered in the classes include ink sketching, ink and watercolours, landscape/architecture and Canadian landscape painting. For more information on purchasing a painting or signing up for a class contact Bradley via email: jrbradley1953@hotmail.ca.

Making bloomers out of flour bags There always seemed to be a supply of empty flour bags for sale at the grist mill. I asked Mother how they got there, since I knew the mill sold only full bags of flour. She explained that some people had no use for their own empty bags and sold them back to the grist mill for a few cents, who in turn sold them to people like my mother for a hefty sum. Mother, who could always find a use for a flour bag, had run out that winter, and after we had done our Saturday errands in Renfrew, we headed for the grist mill. There were all the bags, piled in a corner and sorted into sizes, with prices for each pile written in chalk in front of them. Mother never bought a flour bag without negotiating for a better price, and we finally came out with several which she considered the best of the lot, and at a price she was willing to pay. Getting the flour bags ready to be put to another use was a challenge in the winter time. In the summer, they could be laid out on the grass after washing, where a good soaking with Javel water and the hot sun helped rid the bags of the red and blue printing that covered the entire fronts of each one. But in the winter, it all had to be done indoors. That night, my sister Audrey and Mother set to the task of getting the bags ready for whatever use Mother had planned for them. With the steel picks, they carefully undid the seams, removing the heavy cords which held the bags together. Now they would be ready for the Monday washing. When we came home from school that day, there they were, washed and draped over every chair in the kitchen, circling the Findlay Oval to dry ... clean and ready. The talk between Mother and Audrey told me why we were in need of another pile of flour bags. A batch of tea towels, a couple of sheets and some pillow slips had been given to a family off the Barr Line who had lost everything in a fire, leaving our supply low. Unfortunately, being winter time, the bags couldn’t be spread outdoors on the grass, taking

the hot sun to fade the printing, and so there they were, clean, but exactly like they had come from the grist mill. “They’ll have to do,” Mother said, holding them up and looking at the bright red and blue writings that declared them “The Pride of the ValMARY COOK ley.” Within a couple of days, Mother had stitched up a sheet using four of the bags, made a pair of pillow slips, two or three dish towels, and there was still the front part of one bag left over. I should have known what was going to happen to that piece. Too small for a pillow slip, but just the right size for a pair of new bloomers for me. Usually thrilled with anything new, new flour bag bloomers did little to excite me. Certainly, they would be well hidden under my navy blue fleece bloomers, but I would be well aware that I was wearing flour bags. I was pretty sure that just about every girl at the Northcote school wore flour bag underwear, too, except bad Marguirite, of course. She delighted in telling us whenever she got a new pair of underwear, not the least bit shy at sharing that bit of information with the entire girl population at school. Hers came from Walker Store’s in Renfrew. I wasn’t considered old enough to decide what I would be wearing to school, and every morning, on the chair by the stovepipe in the bedroom, Mother would have carefully laid out what I was to put on that morning. And there they were ... the new bloomers, red and blue printing and all, piled on the chair with my skirt and middy. I had no choice but to put them on, and I said a silent prayer of thanks that they would be hidden under the navy blue fleecies. No one would know but me. Under my outer clothes would be a new pair of flour bag bloomers, with bright red and blue printing still there, declaring that my underpinnings had “The Pride of the Valley” written across the seat. WHERE THE

HAMBURGER IS KING! IS KING!

! s e t o V r u o y r o f u Thanks yo

ODI’S KINGBURGER STAYS ON TOP WITH HANDMADE QUALITY “We make them with lots of love. We pride ourselves and we care a lot.” The Culinary Team at Odi’s is proud of their entire menu. “We are the only place that uses thick crinkle cut fries. We also have onion rings and curly fries. Chicken fingers are a huge seller. We have fish and chips on sale on Friday,” said Robin. Walk or drive-in to Odi’s for the best in takeout food. In summer, enjoy outdoor seating. “We are so happy to be chosen because we compete against some pretty big names.” One day Odi will pass the business on to Robin and her husband Kirk. “Our daughter is ‘Ever’ and we want to keep the restaurant for ‘Ever’.”

Taste and quality have helped Odi’s Kingburger in Renfrew win First Place for its burger every year since the Readers’ Choice competition started. Odi Audette has operated the popular eatery since 1973. More than 40 years later, Odi and his daughter Robin Hisko keep the tradition alive at 546 Stewart St. “Little has changed since then and, well, that’s the way we like it! We just want to sincerely thank everyone for their continued support,” said Odi, who has no plan to retire anytime soon. “We are humbled every time that we win. We have been very blessed with a loyal clientele and wonderful community in Renfrew. We are very grateful.” The classic Odi Kingburger is still made from 100 per cent local beef, fresh every day.

Enright Tree Services is a cut above

Enright Tree Services has been helping nature stay in shape in the Ottawa Valley for more than 30 years. The family-run business provides safe and qualified tree services, including dismantling and complete tree removal, pruning, brushing, chipping and much more. Their dedication to quality service at reasonable prices has earned them a Diamond Readers’ Choice in the Arborist category. “We were very pleased that customers felt we met their needs. We’d like to thank all our customers and people we’ve dealt with,” said Shawnalee Enright. “We give clients more than they expected, and we do a lot of little extras that there is no charge for.” That commitment to exemplary customer service has made Enright first for safe tree management. “Our certified arborists know what they’re doing when it comes to the aesthetics of your shrubs and hedges. We can trim them when they get unruly and can prune them for optimal and controlled growth. Our team of arborists understands the technicality of tree removal, and we do so safely and properly.”
