Golden Age Activity Centre seeks funding from Renfrew council TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com
The Golden Age Activity Centre (GAAC) made a strong case on Jan. 24 for funding from the Town of Renfrew. The GAAC opened in June 2013. This year it will celebrate its fourth anniversary; however, its grant funding runs out in May. The day after the meeting, administrator and programmer Fay O'Reilly stressed they were trying to stay optimistic. "We should be OK for a year because of fundraising, donations, member fees," said O'Reilly. "If the money runs dry, what do you do? You can't stay open. Costs are going up, too. We are trying to stay positive, but if the money runs dry, closure is a possibility. We will remain open for the next year and will continue to fundraise." O'Reilly was at council to ask for their financial support. The new Seniors Active Living Centres Act may bring funding to new approved seniors centres like the GAAC. The new act is currently making its way through the Ontario Legislature, and if passed, funding could become available later this year or early 2018. O'Reilly told council the GAAC must be prepared to apply for the grant. The maximum annual funding currently available to approved senior

Funding under this act has now been available since 2010. The GAAC annual budget is $85,000 with $31,625 of fundraising revenue. That would mean the local municipalities would need to contribute $10,675 financially or with in-kind contributions. "We need a commitment from the Town of Renfrew, as well as the sur-
rounding townships, to meet the requirements of the grant," explained O'Reilly. The Town of Renfrew and the Township of Horton each currently provide a $1,000 grant to the centre annually. "It is our intention to also appeal to the other local municipalities for funding," she added. Reeve Peter Emon asked O'Reilly if a five-year commitment would be better in the eyes of the grant. "A commitment of anything would be great," said O'Reilly. "At this point,

we need to get the information out. If the commitment is in place, with the backing of the town, then we can apply." Coun. Andrew Evans acknowledged the numerous letters he had received from the members of the GAAC and could tell by them it was a rewarding experience being at the centre. "I will get back to you, but there has been a lot," said Evans. During the presentation, O'Reilly said the centre has 300 total mem-
bers and 50 nonmembers who attend a wide array of programs - including fitness, entertainment, bridge, drama, health awareness meals, music, games and more. Of those 300 members who attend programs, 71 per cent, or 214 residents, are from Renfrew. Coun. Tom Sidney broke the numbers down even further, saying of the needed $10,675 needed for the grant that the town could contribute $7,500 or 70 per cent, with the remaining funds coming from the other local municipalities. "That is a $35 investment per person from the Town of Renfrew. When you look at it that way, it's a no-brainer," said Sidney. Mayor Don Eady was also impressed with the presentation. "When you go back to 2013, the centre has jumped leaps and bounds," said Eady. "The numbers are there, and its nice to see a presentation with the facts laid out. The facts are there and they are really impressive. I hope we can do something, as this is a tremendous asset to the town." The GAAC was started after a member of the board of directors of the Renfrew and Area Senior's Home Support had the idea for a seniors centre in Renfrew. After a considerable deliberation, they came to the agreement to apply for an Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) grant, and were successful, in the amount of $30,900.

Renfrew OPP charge two men in murder conspiracy TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com
Two men are facing a slew of charges, including conspiracy to commit murder, following an investigation by the Renfrew detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP). Police say an investigation into a domestic violence incident led to the charges against the two men – one from Ottawa and one from McNab/Braeside. On Jan. 20, a 46-year old man from McNab/Braeside Township was arrested and is charged with: one count of conspiracy to commit murder; one count of conspiracy to commit kidnapping, three counts of criminal harassment; six counts of mischief; one count of assault; and one count of cause injury to animal or bird – fail to provide food, water, care, shelter Then on Monday, Jan. 23, a 44-year old man from Ottawa was arrested and charged with: one count of conspiracy to commit murder; and one count of conspiracy
to commit kidnapping. “It was reported to the communication dispatch centre and officers were assigned to follow up,” said Acting Sgt. Angie Atkinson. “A thorough, professional, investigation was completed. It’s an incredibly serious investigation when we are dealing with conspiracy to commit murder. We look at it that we have prevented a homicide.” She would not confirm the age or where the victim lives. “We are not releasing any information on the victim to protect her identity. Because of the seriousness of the offence we want to protect her identity.” As to the assault count Atkinson would not reveal what type of assault took place. “It is all part of the evidentiary process, the charges reflect the crimes that were com-
mitted,” said Atkinson. She did however confirm that it was a dog that was involved in the incident. “At this time we don’t know the status of the animal and because of the seriousness of the case a lot will come out at court, the status of the dog will come out at court,” said Atkinson. When asked how a small town detachment investigates a serious incident like this she noted all officers are trained the same across the province. “Information came to light that our officers were able to act on and as a result two persons have been charged with some serious criminal offences,” said Atkinson. “Our officers did an excellent job and as a result two people are in custody, charged with some very serious crimes.”
Both accused men have appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice in Pembroke and have been held in custody pending a future bail hearing. The identities of the accused are being withheld to protect the identity of the victim. The Renfrew OPP Crime Unit with the assistance of OPP Forensic Identification Unit and under the direction of Detective Staff Sergeant Scott Moore of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) will be continuing with the investigation. The Renfrew OPP ask if you have information regarding this crime, that you please contact the Renfrew OPP detachment during business hours at 613-432-3211 or toll free at 1-888-310-1122. If you have information but wish to remain anonymous you can contact CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

Renfrew to update official plan, development policies to be key TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com
The Town of Renfrew held a special meeting of council on Jan. 24 to discuss an update to its official plan (OP). The current OP was approved in 2008, and Renfrew planner Ivan Burton noted there have only been six amendments since then. “It has proved to be a very useful tool for the town,” said Burton. “It is an important guiding tool for the town.” An OP contains a longterm vision and policy framework to guide growth and development within a community. It includes text and maps that provide general direction on how land may be used; sets out where new housing, commercial uses and industry will be located; as well as infrastructure, natural systems and more. The Planning Act requires that an OP has to be
updated every five years to ensure the plan is consistent with new provincial policy, satisfies any revised legislation and meets a variety of other requirements. “This is something we have to do, supposedly, every five years and this is the very start of the whole process,” said Mayor Don Eady after the meeting. “There will be lots of things come to light as we move along. I think the items that are outlined kind of show us where our priorities are and where we should go on this.” Bruce Howarth, senior planner with the County of Renfrew — which will also approve the plan before it goes to the province — presented at the meeting as well. Reeve Peter Emon asked Howarth if there were any penalties for not completing the update in the required time. “There are no planning police,” said Howarth. “If a municipality does not fol-
Hunter fined in Griffith MINISTRY OF NATURAL RESOURCES AND FORESTRY
Two men have been fined a total of $1,300 for bear hunting offences. Joseph Phelan of Kingston pleaded guilty and was fined $1,000 for hunting black bear without a licence. Brian Phelan of Petawawa pleaded guilty and was fined $300 for attaching his seal to a black bear killed by another person. Court heard that on Nov. 7, 2016, conservation officers contacted the two men while they were deer hunting in the Griffith area. During the inspection, the officers determined that Joseph Phelan had shot a black bear but did not have a valid black bear hunting licence. Further investigation determined that Brian Phelan, who was licensed to hunt black bear, unlawfully attached his seal to the bear that had been shot illegally. The black bear was seized and forfeited to the Crown. Justice of the Peace Barry Moran heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, Pembroke, on Jan. 23, 2017. The ministry reminds the public that in order to party hunt lawfully, every member of the party must be licensed to hunt that particular species of game. For further information on hunting regulations, please consult the Ontario Hunting Regulations Summary available at ontario. ca/hunting. To report a natural resources violation, call the MNRF TIPS line at 1-877-847-7667 toll-free any time.

low (the Planning Act), there are some mechanisms to hold up approvals … there are some hammers the province can use if you are not following the Planning Act.” Howarth outlined that the five-year review update is to ensure that the plan reflects the current goals and objectives of the community. “That’s why it’s really important to hear from the community, council and staff,” said Howarth. The update will include six phases. Next up is a background study; preparation of the OP amendment; review by staff, council and local involved agencies; and a statutory meeting targeted for the fall of this year.
Howarth says the entire process is estimated to take a year and a half. After adoption of the plan, it is submitted to the County of Renfrew for approval. A 20-day appeal period starts after county approval. Howarth noted this is only an update to the OP, as the existing plan is serving the town well and the update is not intended to be a rewrite of the document. The update is to bring the plan into conformity with the current provincial legislation and policies, and to address ‘key issues’ identified by the town. “This is not a new plan,” said Howarth. “We don’t think an extensive new plan is required.” The town will be able to in-
clude a number of plans it has done into the OP, such as the asset management/master servicing; development charges; community improvement plan; parks, recreation and culture master; Hall Avenue Environmental Assessment; floodplain mapping and road network/community linkages. There have been 26 key issues identified to look into — at the top of the list is the development of policies for economic development. “That was the biggest update, to encourage developments as much as possible and in the correct area,” said Howarth. Being development ready is key for Eady.
“Its very important for the Town of Renfrew, in that if we have someone come into Renfrew, we need to be ready for them,” said Eady. “As we said right from the very start of this council, we are open for business — and in order to be open for business, you have to be ready.” Although the meeting was not well attending, Burton informed council that he would make every effort to make residents aware of the update. He also suggested holding an additional open house for the public outside what is required. Anyone with questions or concerns on the OP is encouraged to contact Burton at iburton@renfrew.ca or 613-4328166.

GRAND ROUNDS Former city doctor loves rural living
Dr. Geena Joseph uprooted her family and life in suburban Southern Ontario and has fully embraced Renfrew life with a huge smile. The newest nephrologist says she has experienced so many positives on both a personal and career level since her arrival in July. The one that trumps everything has been the ability to create the elusive ideal work/life balance. “This is an incredible hospital and I feel so fortunate to have been able to join here. I have a wonderful work life, and wonderful patients; we can deliver fantastic care to them. But at the same time, I have quality of life. Her husband, a pharmacist, and their two young children have also fallen in love with Renfrew: “We’ve always lived in bigger cities and this has been a wonderful change in pace for us. Renfrew has been amazing and the people here are so welcoming and absolutely fantastic. Although life in general has slowed down, her work schedule is just as demanding and stimulating as ever. “As a physician you want that nice balance in patients; we do have very complex and interesting cases.
With the addition of Dr. Joseph, RVH’s Regional Nephrology Program has been able to expand services at the Pembroke satellite site from one clinic day per month, to one day per week. “Those patients get the same benefits of patients here in Renfrew now, from a nephrology perspective, she notes. Dr. Joseph says she and her colleagues Dr. Amtul Musawir and Dr. Nicole Delbrouck now approach all peritoneal and hemodialysis patients as a group practice. “Overall, the patients have improved accessibility to us, the nephrologists. Dr. Joseph’s role also brings her expertise in outreach to health care providers outside of the RVH community. “I love educating other physicians about the different areas of nephrology, she adds. When it comes to working one-on-one with her patients, she says there’s a unique feeling that she’s making a difference in their everyday lives. “It’s a palpable feeling here—you feel it every day and it’s very rewarding.
Dr. Geena Joseph joined the RVH nephrology team in July 2016.

PC leader Patrick Brown confronted by social conservatives in Ottawa DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com
Derek Dunn/Metroland
Ontario PC leader Patrick Brown addresses a large crowd at a Goldie Ghamari organized meeting in Stittsville. Ghamari is a candidate for the Carleton riding. The two praised diversity in the party, but felt heat from social conservatives. “Somebody’s got to keep the conservative in this party,” Annable told the crowd. Others had a similar message for Brown, including Jay Tysick, who was denied a shot at the Carleton nomination by the party. He and several others ripped up their party membership cards at the meeting. Another screamed “You don’t accept social conservatives” at Brown when it comes to the province’s sex-

ual-education program. Yet another demanded equal treatment for Quebec and Ontario workers. Many construction, trucking, and nursing jobs in Ottawa are done by Gatineau workers, was the claim. Brown insisted there is plenty of room in the party, saying at the current pace membership numbers will top the 100,000 high set during the 1990s. “In November and December,

porate America. The comparison was ludicrous. But that’s how out of touch they are.” Since taking over as leader, Brown has brought the party out of debt. It now has a war chest of $12.6 million. Also at the meeting was Carleton MP Pierre Poilievre and Orleans candidate Cameron Montgomery.
Guy Annable’s Make Ontario Great Again hat doesn’t mean he supports everything U.S. President Donald Trump stand for, he said. It means the Progressive Conservatives must move further right on the political spectrum to embrace the social conservative movement.
RIDE THE BUS
STILL TO GO!
Progressive Conservative leader Patrick Brown was primed to lambaste Liberal energy policies at a Stittsville rally on Sunday afternoon, but ended up fending off several social conservatives. The Glen pub’s meeting room was packed and overflowed out the door to hear from host and Carleton candidate Goldie Ghamari and several others. Her big-tent message of party diversity in beliefs and viewpoints that will lead to a majority win in the next election was politely received by most. She slammed the federal Liberals as embracing less important differences like gender and ethnicity. “We have diversity in our ideology, and that’s what is important,” said Ghamari, an international trade lawyer. She was interrupted several times, notably by a self-described “angry white man” sporting a Make Ontario Great Again hat. Guy Annable shouted pro social conservative remarks while filming the meeting. Afterward he said the ball cap, which resembles Donald Trump’s Make America Great Again hats, doesn’t mean he agrees with the U.S. president’s tactics, but that a mainstream approach to politics is not working for many.
44,000 new members joined the party,” Brown said. “We are on the right track. We’ve been very good at grasping defeat from the jaws of victory: we are not going to do that again.” He encouraged everyone to take an active role in the party, to cite policy changes that would further their causes and to participate in the upcoming convention. Brown appeared more confident when denouncing the Green Energy Act and the cap-and-trade program. The Liberals are about finding revenue sources, not solutions to environmental challenges, he said. “This is who they are. Don’t believe their shell games,” he said. He was pushed to commit to cancelling the carbon tax should the PCs form the next government. Brown turned to Carleton-Mississippi Mills MPP Jack MacLaren to ask how long it would take. “About 10 minutes,” MacLaren shouted, to applause. Brown also talked about the Hydro One sell off, and how its CEO should be paid in line with Canadian counterparts. “They never ran on a hydro fire sale, but they are broke,” he said. “When I asked (Premier) Kathleen Wynne why the Hydro One CEO is paid $4 million dollars; how can you justify that? She said that’s what they pay in cor-

Stand Up Against Violence
You have only to skim the pages of this newspaper to note that domestic violence continues to be an issue for many in the Ottawa Valley. There are the recent charges laid against two men in a McNab/Braeside conspiracy to commit murder case, the ongoing court case against Basil Borutski, who allegedly killed three women in the Wilno area in 2015 and numerous domestic violence investigations launched each week by our local Ontario Provincial Police detachment. According to the Canadian Women’s Foundation (CWF), all Canadians pay a steep price for violence against women. “It’s estimated that each year, Canadians collectively spend $7.4 billion to deal with the aftermath of spousal violence alone, according to the Department of Justice. This figure includes immediate costs, such as emergency room visits and related costs, such as loss of income. It also includes tangible costs such as funerals, and intangible costs such as pain and suffering,” says CWF. The statistics are startling: • Half of all women in Canada have experienced at least one incident of physical or sexual violence since the age of 16; • 67 per cent of Canadians say they have personally known at least one woman who has experienced physical or sexual abuse; • Approximately every six days, a woman in Canada is killed by her intimate partner. Out of the 83 police-reported intimate partner homicides in 2014, 67 of the victims - more than 80 per cent - were women; • On any given night in Canada, 3,491 women and their 2,724 children sleep in shelters because it isn’t safe at home. There are a number of local resources to help women and families dealing with domestic violence. Among those is Bernadette McCann House (BMH), which is encouraging the public to get involved in the Stand Up Against Violence photo campaign challenge. “Bernadette McCann House is challenging others to ‘Stand Up Against Violence’ by making their own signs, taking a picture to capture a selfie and forward it to the agency,” says BMH volunteer/public education co-ordinator Erin Norris. More than 360 groups, businesses and individuals have contributed to the campaign. This past weekend close to 20 people gathered in Burnstown to lend their voices and image to the fight against domestic violence. BMH would like to see 1,000 photographs by the close of the campaign. “If you believe violence is not acceptable in our community, please stand up.” Forward your photos to norrise@ wsssbmn.org. If you or someone you know is experiencing abuse, call 613-732-3131 or 1-800-267-4930.
Hydro ‘rebates’ not what they seem: landowners association To the editor:
This month, when I received my electricity bill there was a ‘propaganda sheet’ with it explaining the Hydro ‘rebates’ I would be receiving because I live in a rural area. So I decided to look into this amazing effort by government and Hydro. This insert states everyone is to receive an eight per cent HST rebate. And then below that was the ‘regulatory charges…increasing.’ Now wait a minute, in actuality, a rural residential customer won’t be saving the eight per cent because it’s been added to the regulatory line.

Tricky isn’t it. They give you the eight per cent HST and then in the next breath add eight per cent onto the regulatory charges. And what are these regulatory charges? That’s another trick. On the Hydro website it says it “includes the cost of services required to operate the electricity system and run the wholesale market,” not what the propaganda says. It states that the ‘regulatory charge’ is “to fund the rural…rate protection program.” But what does the ‘wholesale market’ have to do with rural rates? This is for the global adjustment charges. And what are the ‘global adjust-
ment charges?’ It’s to cover the “costs for providing generating capacity and conservation and demand management programs across the province. This includes: non-utility generator contracts, regulated nuclear generation, Renewable Energy Standard Offer Programs, Feed-In Tariff programs (Samsung/Korea), Independent Electricity System Operators contract adjustments and other programs.” What they didn’t tell you is we also have the “Ontario Electricity Financial Corporation” (OEFC). The OEFC is one of five entities established by the Electricity Act, as part of the restructuring of the former

Ontario Hydro which was restructured into OPG, Hydro One, the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO), the Electrical Safety Authority and OEFC. What happened to just Hydro One and OPG? So what we are paying for? More bureaucracies and government cronies. If you look at the board of directors most of them are deputy ministers. Question – why would we need Denise Dwyer, Assistant Deputy Minister of Education on a board for electricity? Just sayin’ – could somebody be getting their pocket’s lined at our expense? And then there are the gas plants we’re still paying for. So now let’s look at what this means. We will be paying, once the gas peaker plant goes into Napanee, $13.7 million per month, or approximately $165 million a year just for one plant, to sit there and do nothing. And don’t forget about the carbon tax that’s going to be on everything? This is your New Demo-Progressive Con-Liberal party working for you. If they continue we’ll all be bankrupt and their cronies will be sitting pretty on electricity alone. Shocking isn’t it? Elizabeth F. Marshall Director of research Ontario Landowners Association

Ravens and crows have much in common Of all local birds, common ravens and American crows are reputedly among the smartest. Both live here year-round and scavenge, especially in winter. However, when I started birdwatching nearly 60 years ago, American crows were common in summer but few, if any, stayed here for the winter. And their close relatives, common ravens, were never present in summer and only visited on rare occasions in winter. They were rare because, being scavengers, they were victimized when strychnine poisoning was instituted across Ontario in a misguided effort to kill off wolves. The Arnprior Christmas Bird Count (1913 - 1931) and the Pakenham CBC, which ran from 1925 to the current year with its name changing in 1970 to the current Pakenham-Arnprior, documented major changes in the winter status of both species. Charles Macnamara never saw even a single raven or a crow on his Christmas Day bird cen-
Crows and ravens had become established winter residents. And the summer status changed, too. Ravens now nest all through our area, placing their nests on hydro pylons, silo ladders and rooftop ledges of tall buildings, as well as on traditional sites such as cliffs. And they nest early. Right now, pairs are performing choreographed courtship flights high up in the sky. American crows haven’t yet started pairing up. cause of the warm air released by buildings, cars, and people (especially politicians), and it is safer at night because there are fewer predators around that might seek crows as midnight snacks. In winter, ravens gather in large numbers when large corpses, such as coyote-killed deer, are found. Groups of juveniles seek out such meals, and when they find one, they scream vociferously to attract more of their age group. During these large social gatherings, the youngsters sort out dominance hierarchies and begin pairing up. Which makes a large carcass nothing less than a singles bar for these fascinating birds! Space provided through a partnership between industry and Ontario municipalities to support waste diversion programs.

Ryan Frew, director of public works for McNab/Braeside, Tom Peckett, Mayor McNab/ Braeside, Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MP Cheryl Gallant, Horton Township Mayor Robert Kingsbury, Janet Collins, public works manager for Horton and Dave Radke, operator, mark the new Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program grant approval for Fraser Road on Jan. 19.
Horton receives grant funding for Fraser Road with support of McNab/Braeside TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com
It's the neighbourly way of doing things. Horton Township applied to the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program, with the support of McNab/Braeside Township, and was successful in receiving a major grant. The Fraser Road project is a three-way partnership with the federal government, Horton and McNab/Braeside. The grant funding is broken down three ways: Horton has received $90,482 from the grant. Horton is contributing $24,455 from development charges and $66,299 from reserves and McNab/Braeside is contributing $90,482. The construction will see upgrades done on a 1.5km stretch of Fraser Road; the centre line of the road is the dividing line between the two townships. Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MP Cheryl Gallant was on hand to mark the partnership on Jan. 19 at the intersection of Fraser and Burnstown Roads. Gallant was pleased that the Canada 150 program was continuing. "I can see no other municipalities quite so deserving and needy as these two municipalities because of the lower tax base, this is a real help to their local municipal tax payers, less money they'll have to spend in taxes," said Gallant. She said the partnership reflects the spirit of the Ottawa Valley. "We see this through co-operation with Horton and McNab/Braeside ... there is huge cooperation," said Gallant. Horton Mayor Robert Kingsbury was extremely pleased they were approved for the grant. "I'm especially pleased we are in partnership with our neighbour McNab/Braeside and Mayor (Tom) Peckett and his council, they gave us great support when doing the application," said Kingsbury.
"I'm also happy the federal government is involved as our MP stated you can't do it on your own anymore. You need help from one level of government or another and when you have a neighbouring municipality there with you it makes it that much easier." Kingsbury thinks this is a very important road. "It connects to Hurds Lake, which is a builtup area for Greater Madawaska so it's very important," said Kingsbury. Kingsbury also went on to praise the hard work of staff and everyone who worked on the grant application. "They did an excellent job and the proof is we received the grant thanks to all of our staff for their hard work they did to achieve this," said Kingsbury. McNab/Braeside Mayor Tom Peckett also agreed the key is helping each other. "When communities help each other things go much smoother and to be able to work with our neighbours in Horton and Mayor Kingsbury and staff," said Peckett. "To see this road repaired for citizens of both townships, for me it is the way to go in the future, we need to have more co-operation and more working together between all of the municipalities. "It's in rough shape right now, this is a boundary road and maintenance can't keep up to it now, so that where we come together for a project like this," said Ryan Frew, director of public works for McNab/Braeside. Janet Collins, public works manager for Horton, explained they are now tasked to work on the engineering aspects of the project before they go to tender in the spring. "We will be doing some ditching work, storm water work adding some granular, taking out some large dips or sags in the road and then we will be putting on surface asphalt," explained Collins on the work that will be done on Fraser Road. She says the work should be started sometime this summer.

New Free Flow Hair Salon opens in Renfrew TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com
When you walk into Renfrew’s newest hair salon, everything just flows together. The Free Flow Hair Salon opened at the beginning of this year at 3 Veterans Memorial Blvd. As soon as you walk into Free Flow, you sense the relaxed, stylish, classic and sleek atmosphere right away. Owner Jaimie Nolan says she always wanted to own a salon. “It’s fun. I’m so happy and excited to be part of the community,” said Nolan. “This is what I have been working towards. A friend remembered that I said when I was in Grade 6, I wanted to own my own salon. It means everything to open my own salon.” Nolan, who grew up in Renfrew, has been a hairdresser for 10 years after finishing the hairstyling program at Algonquin College. Nolan’s ‘Free Flowing’, positive personality shines through as she explains why she likes her chosen profession. “I like making (my clients) feel good about themselves, making someone smile and giving them a little pep in their step. It makes it all worthwhile,” said Nolan. She is thankful to her husband and children. “They have been my biggest supporters and are very proud of me,” said Nolan. As to how she came up with the name of the
new salon, she just started to brainstorm. “I looked for inspiration and just started writing names down, and Free Flow stuck,” said Nolan. “People said, that’s a ‘you’ name.” Nolan hopes people come and check out the new salon. “They should come in because they will get a fabulous hairdo and excellent manicures and pedicures, and a wonderful experience,” said Nolan. “I’m excited for the future of Free Flow and our new adventure.” Working with her are hair stylist Christie Marki and esthetician Correne (Hisko) Deroy. Marki has been working as a hairdresser for 12 years after graduating from Beauty Academy. “Our clients come in and they just feel so relaxed,” said Marki. “One client came in and she said she had never felt so comfortable (in a salon).” Deroy also graduated from Beauty Academy and has been in the business for 13 years. She also taught at the academy. She will be offering manicures, pedicures, shellacs, waxing and tinting. The 600-foot salon offers a wide array of services including cuts for women, men and kids. “Kids are definitely welcome,” said Nolan. “We even have a kids’ corner.” They also offer beard trims, colours, highlights, ombre, balayage, updos, creative colouring, wedding parties and more. “Anything not listed, just ask us,” said Nolan. Celebration of Life raises $19,500 TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com
The celebration lasted all day on Jan. 27 and what an event it was. The annual Celebration of Life day raised $19,500 for Renfrew Victoria Hospital Oncology/Mammography Units, Hospice Renfrew and doctor recruitment. Organizers Alyssa, April and Amber Gillan expressed their gratitude for all those who supported the annu-
al event, calling it special to their late mother Janet Robertson, which they were pleased to be able to continue. “We’re very happy with the amount raised and to see that the community came out to support the event,” said Alyssa. “We would like to thank our community for continuing to come out and support the Celebration of Life year after year. We are proud to be part of such a generous and caring community who
is always willing to help us to succeed in our fundraising efforts.” The day started out with breakfast at Rocky Mountain House, lunch at Finnigan’s Roadhouse and dinner at Renfrew Pizzeria. The event carried on with a dance at the Renfrew Armouries with the Riley New Band and Ghost Town Cryer. Enthusiastic organizers are already looking forward to Celebration of Life 2018.

Robbie Burns day was marked in Renfrew at the Golden Age Activity Centre on Jan. 25. Left: Chris Edgar says grace in Scottish. Top right: Clyde and Catherine Dawe and Hank and Rita de Vocht look up to the famous poet. Clark Smith from Renfrew Highland Pipes and Drums entertains the crowd with a number of tunes before he piped in the haggis. Graham Jamieson passionately delivered the Ode to the Haggis as he cuts into the meat. The band of Ray Kohlsmith, Larry Dougherty and Murray Kohlsmith are rocking during the celebrations.

Further details on these events will be released once they have been firmed up. Friends of the Disabled is ex-

He is working diligently to turn it in to the Art Factory, a new gallery and shop. The shop is set at 11 Bridge St. in Renfrew in what was, for more than 100 years, the H. Imbleau and Son Foundry, which he is currently renovating and hopes to open next year. Mills just finished displaying some of his work at town hall and decided to make what he calls a rare donation, after the generosity that has been showing to him from local citizens. "The people in Renfrew have been so kind," said Mills. "It has been an enormous amount
of kindness and I wanted to thank everyone. It's unreal, crazy how much kindness there is in Renfrew." He says people have helped him when he had car trouble, brought him home cooked meals/ice cream and more. The 3x4 foot painting is valued at $2,400 and is part of his canal series, in which he did one painting a day from the Mackenzie King Bridge in Ottawa. Renfrew Mayor Don Eady was very pleased with the donation. "I think it's absolutely wonderful," said Eady. "He is new to town and making a name for himself with his new endeavour and I wish him all the success in the world." For more information on the Art Factory, visit his Facebook page: www.facebook.com/ArtFactoryRenfrew. For more on Mills, visit his website: http://patrickjohnmills.com.

They had a sweeping good time in Douglas on Jan. 27 for National Broomball week. St. Michael’s Catholic School hosted a four-team tournament with Our Lady Of Fatima, St. James from Eganville and St. Andrew’s from Killaloe. Mary Catherine Brisco, St. Michael’s principal, said this was the first broomball tournament at the school but not the first time the sport was played in Douglas. “When I went to St. Mike’s we used to play broomball in intramurals,” said Brisco. “The final two teams would play at every recess and we would get pretty

George Brown, president of Broomball Canada, visited a number of the schools in December for an introductory lesson. Brown says he always enjoys watching the next generation of broomball players. “If they are having some fun, getting some great exercise and fresh air all the better,” said Brown in an email. St. Mike’s won the junior division and St. James and St. Mike’s tied the senior division as time ran out.

This time of year provides a wonderful opportunity to appreciate some of the hidden artistry of nature not readily visible during the warmer months. Without surging cascades of leaves, trees reveal to us their hidden structure, their woody skeletons. Taking a mindful walk through the silence and energy of trees this time of year provides us with the chance to observe their process of growth. Like with the creation of

an art or craft work, a tree initially begins with a seed or idea. The second part of evolution for both is the process. For the tree, the upward and outward reaching for light of trunk, boughs, limbs, branches and fingerling twigs becomes its form. The artwork, likewise, is formed when a media of choice is acted upon by the stylings, not of nature, but of the artist. The third phase, the product, in each case reveals the unique set of circumstances which was its journey. Since trees in winter are more like drawings, why not consider the creative practice of tak-

Remember to overlap the branches as that is how you see it. Our February meeting will provide members and newcomers an opportunity to show new work. Our guests at this meeting will be Diana Wakely, Jill Alexander and Bonnie Zimmerling who, together, create an exhibition of works
based on similar scenes and interpreted in different media. For this, Bonnie takes photographs while Diana uses watercolour and Jill uses acrylic paint. The finished works display not only the characteristics of each medium but the style and decision-making process of each artist. The three are planning a second themed show to follow up their well-reviewed first show which was seen at the Stone School Gallery in Portage du Fort and the Renfrew Public Library last year. We convene at 7 p.m. on the first Tuesday of every month in the basement meeting room of Trinity St. Andrew’s church (please use the Quarry Avenue entrance). Hope to see you on Feb. 7.

Mary chooses household objects to carefully examine “She’s at it again, Ma,” Emerson said, jabbing a finger in my general direction. I was only faintly aware of his speaking. I was deep in thought to pay much attention. Audrey was too busy to go through Eaton’s Catalogue with me, I had put my dolls to bed, and the only light was coming from the one coal-oil lamp in the middle of the kitchen table. It was the perfect time for me to do what I always turned to when I was left to amuse myself after supper and before bedtime. I would put a chair in the middle of the kitchen, and pick out something in the room that interested me, and spend the evening going over in detail what that piece of furniture meant to us, and what its purpose was. As simple as it was, I could spend hours at this meaningless pastime, which more than once caused my brother Emerson to say it all proved that I was just a ‘bubble off plumb’. That night I settled on the white cabinet, which shared one wall in the kitchen with the Barnett Ice Box.
It was a big cabinet, but certainly not as big as the back-to-the-wall cupboard that took up almost a whole wall. But starting at the very top, where Mother had put a green glass jug for decoration, that night I thought it was just about the most important piece of furniture in the whole kitchen. There were two small doors at the top. This is where our best dishes were kept...the ones we got in puffed wheat at Briscoe’s General Store, and the only ones that matched. Then under these doors was where the real purpose of the cabinet began. On the left side there was one long door inside which hung a tin cylinder affair that held Mother’s flour. It was like a big flour sifter, and
when Mother needed flour, she put a bowl under this tin, turned a handle, and like a miracle, out came the flour! And as I sat there, I thought what a wonderful invention was that cupboard, that had my attention that night. Imagine, a flour sifter inside a door! Beside it, there were small shelves, and here Mother could keep her baking bowls, and those used to take to the dinner table at mealtime. And then underneath the shelves, and the full length of the cupboard, there was a piece of white porcelain, what I thought was just about the handiest invention ever thought of next to the flour sifter! Here Mother could make sandwiches, cut meat, in fact, just do about any chore in the kitchen where she needed a flat surface. And lo and behold, right under this piece of porcelain, was a wood cutting board that could be pulled out whenever needed. Here Mother pounded down bread and rolled out pastry, and each knife mark, I thought, showed how very im-

portant was this addition to the white cupboard. A long drawer was under this board, and here there was lots of space for our mismatched silver wear. And as I sat there in the middle of the kitchen floor, I could picture the forks with a four leaf clover etched in each handle. And I thought how rich we were indeed to have such fine forks to eat from! Under all of this were two more doors. Apart from the time my young cousin Terry once crawled in and hid for hours while we frantically scoured the farm looking for him, this space was kept for roast pans, cookie sheets and muffin tins. That night, I saved the best of the cupboard for the last. Above the porcelain was a door made completely of narrow slats of wood. Mother could pull this door up and down, and when it was up, it completely vanished into goodness knows where. I could never figure out where it went to, and I really didn’t want to know. I wanted it to remain a mystery, so that on the evening when I chose

the cupboard to visit, there would always be something about it yet to learn. Emerson once asked Mother what in heavens name I found interesting about simply sitting and looking at the pieces of furniture that filled our kitchen, and he would tease me and say I had a screw loose whatever that meant. And Mother would tell him to leave me alone, that one day I might keep those memories deep in my mind, and I might even write about them. Interested in an electronic version of Mary’s books? Bonnie Beveridge, Jocelyne Tetrault, Rick Valin and Carl Hager were fulsome in their praise for the warm reception they received and promised to return. RVH Your support makes a difference
GROWING FORWARD
Our commitment to care continues
The new year has begun much as the past year ended at RVH— and that’s good news. Projects are ongoing to upgrade and improve our hospital. The main corridor is being modernized to improve the patient and family experience as soon as you enter our doors. Inpatient rooms on second and third floor are being renovated to ensure that our patients receive care in a safe and pleasant environment.
What our grateful patients are saying… “I recently required the services of your hospital and was very impressed with the service I received.
Diagnostic imaging department upgrades—including a new fluoroscopy suite, digital portable radiography system, and state-ofthe-art 128-slice CT scanner—will provide patients with access to the fastest and safest technology possible in our own community.
From registration to the x-ray department and the laboratory, I was met by smiling faces and a staff who obviously enjoy their jobs. They were courteous, helpful and efficient…” “My reason... is to put into perspective how thankful I am that your hospital and your staff were there for me in my time of need.” “What particularly struck us and will remain with us as the friendliness and welcoming manner of everyone we dealt with. There was compassion mixed with good humour and we all knew we were in capable hands.”
February 2017 • In partnership with the Renfrew Mercury
This is all made possible by our community’s ongoing investment in health care—your support makes a difference to the patients and families who depend on us for care.

I know my donation is put to good use and it makes me feel good to support an organization that is not just in the community but really is the heart of our community. — HC

Hilda was born in Beer, England and came to Canada with her parents Roy and Ada Thompson as a small child. Associated with the Canadian Forum for more than 40 years, Hilda served on its editorial board and contributed scores of articles, reviews and travelogues to it and numerous other publications. In her 70s, she authored two books: Phoenix Time, a compilation of her poems, and Between the Lines, a collection of her interviews with such notable Canadians as Margaret Laurence, Northrop Frye, Leon Rooke and William McElcheran. In Loving Memory of
Jim Lyons
In loving memory of a dear father, son, grandfather and brother who left us on February 1st 2014. A million times we needed you, A million times we cried, If love alone would have saved you, You would have never died. In life we loved you dearly, In death we love you still, In our hearts you hold a place, No one can ever fill. A light from our household is gone, A voice from our love is stilled, A place in our vacant home, Which never can be filled. Some may think you are forgotten, Though on earth you are no more, But in our memory you are with us, As you always were before. It broke our hearts to lose you, But you did not go alone, A part of us went with you, The day God called you home. Your precious memories are for keepsakes, with which we never part, God has you safely in his keeping, But we have you forever in our hearts. Love always and forever Mom, Lauren, Ryan, James, Crystal, Trevor, Cierra, Kolby, Connor, Gabe and family.

Renfrew Art Guild Art Tree The Art Tree Project is a community event celebrating Canada 150. The newspaper is featuring a number of trees that have already been produced. To view the trees in person visit one of 12 local shows. If you would like more information on how to create your own tree go to your www.arttreeproject.ca . The Renfrew Art Guild is registered in the community club section. Our story: Twelve years ago a group of four artists from Renfrew County met and decided to form the Renfrew Art Guild (RAG), based in Renfrew. The aim of the group was to bring together people of a like mind to enjoy each other’s art and company. The RAG has now evolved into a diverse group of roughly 40 artists that work in all mediums from watercolour, pencil, oil, digital art to metal sculpture. The members are from Renfrew, Braeside, Burnstown, Calabogie, Douglas, Golden Lake, Eganville, Arnprior and the Pontiac in Quebec. At our meetings we share our knowledge of our mediums and experiences. The end result is that many of the members have expanded their own creativity. In past years the RAG has held very successful art exhibitions in Renfrew and Calabogie and in July 2012 hosted the largest outdoor art show ever to be held in Renfrew. Thanks to the artists, volunteers, food vendors, entertainers and sponsors who helped to make the inaugural “Renfrew Art in the Park” a success! Description: Each artist who came to the June 2016 meeting brought with them a small photo of one of their art works cut into the shape of a leaf. We assembled the leaves on the Art Tree and each wrote their name by it. The logo was printed and put on below the tree’s roots. Members donated their used paintbrushes, which were attached to the painted wooden frame. Acrylic paints were used to paint the tree, the background and frame.
