The Renfrew Fair is changing midway providers for the 2016 fair and the new company is promising lower prices and the return of a number of treasured rides. Carter Shows Ltd. announced Thursday morning (Feb. 11) that it will be supplying the midway, taking over the job from long-time provider World’s Finest Shows. “What will 2016 bring? Carter Shows will be bringing 25 rides, including the return of the Polar Express, the Zipper, Tilt a Whirl and a Family Dragon Coaster,” said a joint press release issued by Carter

Shows and the Renfrew Agricultural Society. “There will be lower prices everyday for pay-one-price bracelets and tickets. New advance sales at elementary and high schools will allow the schools to do some fundraising.” The agricultural society had announced and planned to have Carter Shows in place for last year’s fair but World’s Finest explored legal avenues that led to the company remaining the provider for the 2015 event. “After months of negotiations, we are happy to say that we are finally coming to Renfrew!” said the Carter Shows announcement. Educators debate Renfrew Collegiate, St. Joe’s merger Derek Dunn

derek.dunn@metroland.com

When provincial budget season rolls around so does talk of merging the public and Catholic school boards in Ontario, the last province to maintain separate boards. Several stories have appeared recently in mainstream news outlets, along with statements by various groups opposed to faithbased education. However, the issue became localized this time around when a teachers’ union president penned an article that argues in favour of merging Renfrew Collegiate Institute (RCI) and St. Joseph’s Catholic High School. (The latter’s catchment area includes Arnprior and the rest of south eastern Renfrew county.) Jeff Barber’s article in the August issue of Education Forum, titled A tale of two schools: How one small town is divided by two secondary schools, offered several reasons for why it made sense that the two schools become one. “As an educator, this tale of two schools saddens and frustrates me. As a parent, this tale of two schools simply angers me,” Barber concluded. “It would be fantastic if Renfrew had the luxury of supporting two schools but, unfortunately, it cannot. The attempt to support multiple schools is punishing our children and seriously impacting their futures and the future of this province. We must do better in this

province! We must do better for our children!” Among the points he raised are: • The town population is too small for two high schools; • Elementary students are forced into high school buildings to ensure funding levels are maintained; • Both high schools are missing out on maximum funding; • Catholics enjoy additional “rural and remote” funding while public students don’t; • Too much time and money is spent competing to attract students; • Limited course selection due to fewer students at each; • Split classes employed; • Kids from same town should attend same high school; • Catholic students are not expected to meet different people and embrace different ideas; • All schools should promote inclusion; • Catholics and public students share one roof in Barry’s Bay. Bob Michaud is chairman of the Renfrew County Catholic District School Board. He agrees there is always an “underlying movement” to remove Catholics’ constitutional right to a religious education. And it often creeps up this time of year. But there are no discussions of merging the two Renfrew schools anytime soon. “The Renfrew County Catholic District School

Board is not aware of any plans with respect to our Catholic high school in Renfrew,” he said via email. “We continue to support our students at (St. Joseph’s) in their academic pursuits and spiritual development.” He later addressed each point in Barber’s piece, essentially saying there is much proof to show that St. Joseph’s is an excellent school as it is. The student population at RCI is about 450. At St. Joe’s it is 380. Were they to combine, the population would top 800. Saving would likely result from having fewer workers in administration. Michaud said there is evidence showing a high school with less than 500 students is optimal. “To say bigger is better – I don’t agree,” he said. “We pride ourselves on smaller schools.” Neither Michaud nor Barber discussed which building would close: RCI’s historic location, or St. Joe’s relatively state-of-the-art. Nor what would become of the empty one. It is also not clear that Catholic students from Arnprior and other areas outside Renfrew would choose RCI’s building. More likely they would pick a public high school closer to home, reducing the about 800 combined population. Michaud called it a myth that smaller schools miss out on funding. The province gives money for each pupil. There are “small grants” for northern status and the like,

but the amounts are minuscule, he said. Michaud said his board doesn’t spend too much time and money attracting students. They hope to retain Catholic students, but are not “putting up big billboards” to lure away others. “Yes, we promote the Catholic system but I don’t

think we are competing that way,” he said. There are two public options. Barber spent some time in his piece discussing courses offered. “The reality is that if the two small secondary schools in our community were combined into one, the breadth and depth of curriculum

that could be offered to our students would improve significantly,” he said. “To the detriment of our students, neither of our high schools can offer the selection of courses provided in larger urban centres, particularly at the senior (grades 11 and 12) level.

“We have received hundreds of emails inquiring about it being added to our list. We can finally say yes!” Both the fair board and the company are pleased to have the agreement in place. “After many years, the Renfrew Agricultural Society and local fair goers felt there was much need for change. In 2014, the Renfrew Agricultural Society began talks with Carter Shows Ltd., but due to unforeseen circumstances, the Renfrew Fair would see their previous supplier back for 2015,” said the release. “We are very happy to be coming to Renfrew,” said Carter Shows Ltd. president Bruce Brock. “The community has

and hopefully many more years to follow,” said Dobec. “I have visited a few of their fairs and was very impressed with what I saw. They’re a very easy company to work with.” She expects the public will be pleased with the ride lineup. “Everybody’s been wanting the Zipper and finally we’re gong to have it back,” said Dobec. Midway discounts for 4-H club members are another plus, she said. In the coming months, Carter Shows will be rolling out ride specials and contests on social media, she added. More details are available on the website at www.cartershows.ca/events #‎RenfrewFairRides‬ and on Facebook at ‘Carter Shows Ltd.’ The 2016 edition of the Renfrew Fair will be held Sept. 7-11.

Extend postal hours in Burnstown: council John Carter

John.carter@metroland.com

The loss of postal service in White Lake has prompted McNab-Braeside council to urge Canada Post to consider extending hours at the Burnstown outlet. Council passed a motion Feb. 2 asking that the limited hours of service at the Burnstown franchise postal outlet be lengthened. Council noted that the White Lake General Store recently stopped offering postal services. The closest outlet to White Lake is Burnstown, but it only ope from 9 to 11:45 a.m. and 3:15-4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday. Council’s motion pointed out that residents living in a rural area “depend greatly on having access to a rural postal outlet.” As residents in the White Lake, Waba and Stewartville areas no longer have access to the service in White Lake, the hours at the Burnstown post office should be increased, council concluded.

‘Standard of excellence’: AMCTO Continued from page 3

It focuses on current competencies based on a combination of education and experience within the municipal context. Successful applicants demonstrate skills and knowledge in five areas, including, municipal knowledge, management, leadership, communication skills and human resources. “Annette has clearly demonstrated a commitment to attaining and maintain the highest standard of excellence in municipal administration and is therefore most deserving to be called a municipal officer,” said AMCTO executive director Andrew Koopmans in a letter announcing the designation. “We believe that this is a tremendous accomplishment and should be regarded with pride by your municipality.” Louis expressed her thanks to council. “It was a really good undertaking,” she said. “I want to say thank you to council, to previous council and staff.” She also thanked Bruce Beakley, Renfrew County director of human resources, for his support. “Without encouragement I would not have gone through with this,” she said.

Local businesses embraced a chance to network on Feb. 11 in Renfrew. The ‘Business, Government Services and You’ event took place at the Ma-Te-Way Activity Centre and was hosted by Renfrew County Community Futures Development Corporation (RCCFDC). Kelly Lemenchick, the community development officer with RCCFDC was one of the organizers of the event and was pleased with the turnout. “We had 30 people register plus presenters here,” said Lemenchick. The event was also a chance for local businesses owners to network with each other as

Courses such as Grade 12 physics or calculus are not offered in either school every year.” Barber later backed away from the assertion, saying he doesn’t know of any student denied their choice of post-secondary education because they grew up in a rural area with a high school that offered fewer courses. However, he maintained it is possible – and that high school students may have to wait a year to get the course they want. Michaud said the Catholic board hasn’t heard any complaints about the course offerings. He said physics and calculus are fairly essential and would be surprised to learn they aren’t offered at any of his schools. Many courses can be taken online too, he said. Pressed on the board taking a passive approach and waiting for complaints before acting on course selections, he said parent groups and principals are constantly informing the board of changing expectations among students. Michaud admits there are split classes “from time to time” needed to meet provincial standards, but usually among lower classes. Barber said it is “not unusual” for RCI classes to have students from grades 10 to 12, and not just in elective courses. Barber talked of neighbourhood kids playing

well. She feels events like this are important for the business community. “To learn what opportunities are out there for small businesses so they can make contacts with the right people to move forward with their business,” said Lemenchick. Presenters at the event included representatives from Canada Business Ontario, the Ministry of Labour, Concierge, Canadian Intellectual Property Office and RCCF. RCCFDC is helping plan a Selling Food to Ontario Workshop also hosted by Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs on March 3 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at TIFFANY LEPACK/METROLAND the Horton Community Centre. sports together but going to separate high schools. “Being exposed to many different people and ideas only serves to make our students better prepared to live in a world we all share,” he wrote. “Schools work very hard to promote inclusion: to make our facilities and programs safe, and accepting and accommodating for all students. Our schools are the best place to bring our children together; schools should not be where we keep them apart.” Do Catholic schools not promote pluralism? “I find that something of an outrageous statement,” Michaud said. “Our students are exposed to all faiths. Our schools promote inclusion. Our faith has us respecting all other faiths and points of view.” On having Catholic students at Madawaska Valley District High School in Barry’s Bay, Michaud said it is one educator/ pastoral support worker who offers religious courses. “It is a public school run by the public board.” Michaud said St. Joe’s is consistently ranked among the top schools in the province. Why would his board want to do anything to jeopardize that high level of success? Barber said he is advocating for what is best for all children in Renfrew, along with the taxpayer who sees half empty school buildings in the last province with a separate board.

Bottle drive blitz this weekend for animal rescues Tiffany Lepack

tlepack@metroland.com

Raise your paws and your empties for your critter friends this weekend. Empties for Paws is preparing for its first ever bottle blitz (beer, wine, liquor and Canadian Tire money) on Feb. 20-21. “We are trying to reach

out to those people who don’t normally donate and to share the love this February,” said founder Gisele Villeneuve. “We want to flood the rescues on our website with much needed funds.” Villeneuve started the fundraiser for animal rescues two years ago and has raised more than $10,000, with more than $3,600 from restaurant dona-

tions. “It’s a huge success,” said Villeneuve. “My goal is to encourage people to donate and for the rescues to start collecting. “ In 2015, her goal was to raise $1,000 for the Valley Animal Rescue in Renfrew. She surpassed that goal raising $2,390. “It’s wonderful to see it grow and see people collect for their rescues and I didn’t think we would get restaurant’s to participate either.” She started the fundraiser with a bottle drive for the Valley Animal Rescue in 2014. “I asked Mill Music first if we could set up a donation box there and they wanted to help right away,” said Villeneuve. Blaine Sidock Construction made the box at Mill Music with donated supplies,. The drop off is located at 25 Argyle St. “It’s a really nice bin, it’s huge and even has a music note on it.” In January of 2015 someone asked if there was a drop

off in Pembroke, she reached out to friends on social media and soon there was a drop off there. “It’s just a crazy idea I had, why not have a list to show where you can drop off and that became a website and it just snowballed from there, half of the places on the website were not even collecting.” She now has more than 40 rescues listed on the site and the money raised from the drives goes to help cover the cost of food and veterinarian bills at the shelters. “It’s a cost free way to help animals with empties and Canadian Tire money,” said Villeneuve. “With your help you are helping the animals, it’s cost free because you have already paid deposit. It’s all about thinking outside the box because it doesn’t cost people money.” Nobody project

Grade 4 student Kolby Johnson stands with his pile of empties he has collected for Empties for Paws. Public School, is using his Nobody Doll project to give back to the charity as well. He is currently collecting empties for his school project. Villeneuve was very excited for the young boy’s help. “He’s been working so hard,” said Villeneuve. So far he has raised $275 and is still collecting. In Renfrew empties can be

dropped off at Mill Music 25 Argyle St. and in Calabogie the drop off is at Shooter’s Bar and Grill at 4988 Calabogie Rd. in support of the Calabogie Feral Rescue. School merger a false argument There’s no harm in having a dialogue over the continued existence of the Catholic school board in Ontario. It is budget season at the provincial level, so it is quite legitimate to examine all expenditures for possible efficiencies or termination. Everyone who benefits from tax dollars should at least expect to justify their worth. But that doesn’t mean merging Renfrew Collegiate Institute (RCI) and St. Joseph’s Catholic High School is a good idea. At best it is premature; at worst a false argument. There is no proof students at either school are suffering. Certainly school pride is strong at both, and according to provincial testing RCI is at about the middle of the pack and St. Joe’s is near the top. It would take a strong argument to justify a departure from the status quo. Students and parents are not complaining en masse about the lack of courses. Both schools at least meet the minimum standards. Were there outrage at public meetings and in the letters section of the newspaper, maybe the issue wouldn’t be premature. Until those two circumstances change, a merger is premature. Now, as for the false argument aspect. Governments filter money to small towns in several ways. One is through high-paying

jobs in schools, both teaching and administrative. It doesn’t serve Renfrew County any good to voluntarily kill those jobs for the benefit of Ontario’s taxpayers (the vast majority of who live in big cities). The last few decades have seen a dramatic rise in the notion that we can no long afford the luxury of a lot of services that past generations took as mandatory. Somehow, despite an ever-growing GDP and workers putting in more hours, we are supposed to accept that our standard of living must go down. And that Catholic religious education costs too much. That isn’t the conversation to have. Part of the reason schools – and hospitals, for that matter – are suffering from a lack of funding is because corporations and the wealthiest Ontarians are contributing less and less. The argument those who want more money for public schools should have is this: Governments must get serious about plugging loopholes that allow billions of dollars to escape Canada every year. It is fine to examine where we can save money. Let’s just be thorough about it. Look for savings in services for the poor and middle class. But it is only fair to look at corporations and the rich too.

When we learned of the passing of Jim Ferguson, we had to lower our flags. Jim, you will surely be missed by all your bird lovers in Renfrew County who looked forward to your column. Serving with you on the planning committee was a delight and your looking after Horton Remembrance Day services with your son Corey will be missed. I have met numerous students that you taught and all have a high regard for you. I am sure the good Lord has a special place for you.

The flags at David Brown’s Horton Township home are at half mast in tribute to retired teacher and Renfrew Mercury nature columnist Jim Ferguson, who passed away Feb. 7. Love from all of us and to your family as well.

More education needed when it comes to carbon monoxide To the editor:

Over the past few weeks, we have become aware of a troubling trend. Not only is it disturbing but also very worrisome to emergency response personnel. We received a phone call from a concerned citizen regarding their carbon monoxide alarm. The individual went on to explain how their c/o alarm had been beeping for two days and had finally become annoyed enough to call someone. She did not feel 911 was warranted for just a simple beeping alarm, as it would surely be nothing. It is, for obvious reasons, our policy to investigate all such calls. So this is where

PARK IT!

the more troublesome part arises. Yes, we did find carbon monoxide levels in the residence and it turns out the alarm alerted the occupants as it should have. On a different occasion, an individual called the Renfrew Fire Department to inform them of their beeping carbon monoxide alarm. The individual noted the alarm had been beeping all night but did not want to bother anyone at such an early hour. As of April 15, 2015 the Ontario Fire Code required carbon monoxide alarms to be installed in residential buildings that have fuel burning appliances, fireplaces and attached garages.

In accordance with the Fire Protection and Prevention Act. So yes, it is in fact the law to have a functioning carbon monoxide alarm in your house (as well as a cottage, hunt camp, or RV), if you have a natural gas, propane, oil fired or even a wood fired appliance in your home. I believe most individuals are getting that message. However, more information is obviously needed, to educate everyone on carbon monoxide and its possible dangers. Information such as: am I required to have an alarm and why, where does carbon monoxide come from, what does the carbon monoxide alarm

sound like, where should I install this device, and finally, what should I do if I hear my alarm? A relatively new product is gaining popularity across the province. This device is a combination smoke alarm and carbon monoxide alarm. It is a fantastic product that works quite well. However, like any electronic device, the purchaser must be familiar with its features and how it functions. The combination alarms will give two separate and distinct alarms depending on the reason for activation. In most cases it will consist of three beeps for the smoke alarm activation and four beeps for the carbon mon-

oxide alarm. To add a little confusion, the combination alarms like other types of alarms will also beep once every minute if it senses a power interruption, a low power supply (low battery) or if there is a problem with the unit. So it simply isn’t enough to purchase and install alarms. While it is the first step, we really need to know how they function, and more importantly heed their warning. Most of the information you will require will be contained in the manufactures installation instructions. The back of the carbon monoxide alarm will also give you a quick reference guide. The Renfrew

Fire Department would also be glad to assist with any questions you may have. Remember, carbon monoxide is a tasteless odorless gas also known as the silent killer. In the future, should your carbon monoxide alarm, or even your smoke alarm start to beep, and you are unsure as to why, do not ignore it, call your local fire department or call 911 Should you require further information please do not hesitate to call the Renfrew Fire Department at 613-432-2811. Fraser’s Clothes Shop open during renovations tlepack@metroland.com

Fraser’s Clothes Shop in Renfrew has been a staple in the community for 124 years and it’s not going anywhere anytime soon. In fact, it’s currently under renovations to serve its customers even better while moving into the 21st century with a new online store. Doug Collins, store manager, reminds everyone the store is open for business during the renovations and customers can still expect what they have come to love at Fraser’s. “It will be the same quality service; the store was built on quality service,” said Collins. “That’s what it’s all about.” Collins has been at the store for 26 years and his father Jack Collins worked there for 47 years. Alex Fraser opened a general store in Renfrew in 1891 and after a fire a new store opened at its current location at 254 Raglan St. South. In 1952 it expanded to 5,000 square feet, in 1974 it ex-

panded again to 8,000 feet. Part of the current renovations include cutting back the store space to 4,000 square feet and the Bonnechere Bakery and Bistro Fine Food Emporium is set to move to the other side. “It just needed a facelift. It was time to update, we are keeping some of the history and at the same time moving into the new century,” said Collins. “We will still carry the same volume and same brands as before as well as some new lines.” The last time the store renovated was in 1952. There have been a number of changes to the store, including erecting a wall up the centre. All of the windows have been updated as well as new LED lights, floor and a new back door installed. The renovations started at the end of December and should be finished in the next few weeks, with a grand re-opening planned for the spring. Collins explains part of the reason they are changing the store is

the retail trend is to cut back on the ready to go by mid-summer,” said brick and mortar stores and move Collins. “The only way to grow is sourcing other markets. GRAND ROUNDS Shaking up the Valley to support RVH Get out your dancing boots—this year’s Shake the Foundation event is promising to be nearly a full day of non-stop music from the best up-and-coming country artists and local favourites. “Our goal is to create an event that’s good for families to attend together … even grandparents. There’s going to be something for every age group to come and enjoy,” says Craig Dunbar, one of the organizers. All proceeds will be directed once again to the RVH Foundation, to assist the nephrology program, a cause close to Dunbar’s heart. “Our dedication has not wavered,” he says about the support being directed to patients living with kidney disease in the area. Dunbar has spent time as a hemodialysis patient in the old unit and had a successful kidney transplant two years ago.

“The new unit is absolutely beautiful; that project exceeded all expectations and brings world-class services to this town. We continue to choose RVH because they’re always raising the bar for health care in our community and demonstrate it (with recent expansion and ongoing redevelopment plans) time and time again.” The event itself features an earlier start than usual to showcase the talents of the younger crowd (17 and under). The winner of this new Youth Musical Talent Contest will be invited to perform on stage that evening. People age 18 and over can enter the Country 101.1 online contest. The top three finalists will compete at the show for a chance at a cash prize. Once the stage is warmed up, Dunbar says attendees are in for a treat from the seasoned musicians.

“We have Douglas Connection, Renfew’s own Southpaw (a crowd favourite every time they play), Sandi Skye—an electrifying performer, a great group from Stittsville called Ridin’ Shotgun who play the best of the classics to stuff you hear on the Top 40 charts and, of course, we have Jordan McIntosh back again. Jordan’s just a bundle of energy.”

5th annual Shake the Foundation charity country music show, Renfrew Armouries, Saturday, February 27. Doors open at 1 p.m.; tickets are $15 (online or at the door). Pre-sale tickets available at Aikenhead’s, the Renfrew Armouries and Dahl’s in Renfrew. For more details, visit www.shakethefoundation.net

A program providing specific training and educational opportunities for young athletes ages 7-12 with intellectual disabilities, assisting them to develop more sport-specific skills that will contribute to their future participation in sports. Sport-specific skills like jumping, throwing, kicking, running, catching, striking, agility, balance, coordination, and speed will be introduced and developed. Our program goal is for each participant to have improved in one or more of the following areas: physical skill acquisition, physical fitness, social skill development, decision making, knowledge and understanding, and a true and lasting appreciation of physical activity. The FUNdamentals program is intended as a vehicle for fostering and developing improved social, physical and cognitive abilities of young athletes, and building the foundation for future sports success. We wish to introduce children at a younger age to the world of sport, allowing for earlier development of fundamental movement skills. It’s also a wonderful opportunity for participants to interact with peers in a fun environment while learning and improving upon basic motor skills. As well, both children and care givers will be educated about nutrition and the importance of a balanced lifestyle, which will help them stay healthy throughout their lives.

Heritage Renfrew hosts AGM Feb. 21

RENFREW'S HISTORIC THEATRE

Andy Laird to speak on theme of trains at Heritage Renfrew annual meeting Sherry Haaima

sherry.haaima@metroland.com

All aboard for Heritage Renfrew’s annual general meeting, coming up Feb. 21. The theme for this year’s AGM is trains and guest speaker Andy Laird, enthusiast and collector, will be on hand with plenty of information and displays for attendees to enjoy. Laird has been interested in trains for more than 30 years and said he will have a working model train on display at the AGM. “It’s a g-scale train, which is larger than the regular ones,” he said.

Laird has focused his collecting on Canadian trains and memorabilia, which can be a challenge since much of what is out there is American. At one time, three major rail lines – Canadian Pacific, Canadian National and the K&P (Kingston and Pembroke) – ran through the area, said Laird. Trains have a significant role to play in local history, he added. “The railway made a major difference in the making and breaking of a lot of towns and villages throughout history,” said Laird. “When the railway was originally com-

ing through areas, politicians and people would try to get it to swing through or by their community.” Case in point, said Laird, is the Village of Osceola, which was once larger than Cobden. impact

“When Canadian Pacific came up through the valley, the railway was supposed to go through Osceola but it was swayed towards Cobden, which was the demise of Osceola and a boost for Cobden,” he said. Railways had a large impact on the local economy

Friday, February 19 to thursday, February 25

and way of life, said Laird. “A lot of people were actually employed, directly or indirectly, by the railway,” he said. Laird is well known in local circles for bringing his train displays to various events, including the Cobden Fair and Renfrew County Plowing Match. Heritage Renfrew is an incorporated Ontario notfor-profit organization and registered charity. Its motto is ‘Preserving yesterday for tomorrow.’ The meeting takes place Feb. 21 at 2 p.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 148, Renfrew.

Energy audit, retrofits incentives unfair to rural areas: MPP Staff

Rural residents who don’t have access to natural gas should get efficient heating incentives too, Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MPP John Yakabuski told the Legislature last week. Yakabuski, the Opposition Progressive Conservatives Energy Critic, expressed concern about the fairness of the government’s recently announced $100 million program that helps homeowners receive a home energy audit and retrofit their furnaces. The money – disbursed through the Ontario Green Investment Fund – will only help homeowners who have natural gas available to them, he noted. Although the Ontario PC Party supports programs that will reduce greenhouse gases and save homeowners money, the fact that it only applies to Ontarians who are connected to natural gas means that many rural residents in the province will not benefit from the program, he added.

“In my riding of RenfrewNipissing-Pembroke - and in many rural ridings all across Ontario - many constituents do not have access to natural gas,” said Yakabuski. “Often in areas where homeowners cannot get natural gas, they have propane as a cleanenergy option. Since propane is a clean, reliable, and affordable source of energy, why did the government not include it in this program?” Yakabuski also noted that the stated purpose of the Ontario Green Investment Fund is to reduce greenhouse gases and spur innovation throughout the entire province, not to allow the government to pick winners and losers. “This is just another example of this government ignoring rural Ontarians and rushing out to make another ill-conceived photoop announcement, rather than doing the necessary legwork to make this program successful and fair to all,” he concluded.

Run. Jump. Play. Every Day.

MP calls for hearings on Hydro One purchase Staff

Local MP Cheryl Gallant has raised the spectre of “more huge electricity rate increases” if Hydro One is allowed to buy a major transmission company. Gallant, the MP for RenfrewNipissing-Pembroke, called on the federal industry minister last week in the House of Commons to conduct public hearings as part of the Federal Competition Act review of the purchase by Hydro One of Great Lakes Power Transmission. offer

“Hydro One Ltd’s recent announcement of its offer to purchase Great Lakes Power Transmission has my constituents worried this will be another excuse for huge electricity rate increases,” said Gallant. Noting Hydro One has been criticized for poor customer service by the Ontario Ombudsman, she said the utility would

be out of business if it was not a monopoly. more job losses

“If this sale is allowed to go through, Hydro One will control 98 per cent of the electricity transmission market. “More jobs will be lost as electricity rates go higher. People will be forced out of their homes because they cannot afford the electricity bill. Heat or eat.” Gallant also expressed concern that “as a newly created private

monopoly, Hydro One is no longer under the scrutiny of the Auditor General.” Canadians were promised transparency and open government, said Gallant, adding that public hearings into the transaction are the only way to keep that election promise. Responding for the government Liberals, Greg Fergus said the transaction would be given a “rigorous” examination by the Competition Bureau.

Ottawa Riverkeeper welcomes new executive director Ottawa Riverkeeper is pleased to announce the hiring of Patrick Nadeau as its new executive director. Effective immediately, Nadeau will be responsible for leading Riverkeeper’s dynamic team of staff and volunteers, as well as for the overall management of the organization. Meredith Brown, the outgoing executive director,

remains within the organization as the Riverkeeper, where she will continue to bring communities together and serve as a voice for the health of the Ottawa River watershed. Nadeau comes to Ottawa Riverkeeper after several years as the executive director for Québec of CPAWS, a nationally respected

conservation organization. In this role, he successfully led high-level policy and advocacy initiatives which resulted in concrete environmental gains for Québec – namely in the fields of forest and marine conservation, as well as northern development and land-use planning. Nadeau also supported indigenous conservation initiatives,

and has been recognized both by the Cree and Inuit leadership in Québec for his organization’s collaborative work. Geoff Green, founder of the award-winning program Students on Ice and chairman of the board at Ottawa Riverkeeper stated: “We are pleased to welcome Patrick to the Ottawa Riverkeeper family. He

joins this organization at a time of great progress and growth, and we consider his appointment as a sign of our commitment to continue building on this momentum, including an increased presence in Québec.” Ottawa Riverkeeper is a grassroots charity dedicated to protecting the Ottawa River and its tributaries, inspiring action and working collaboratively to achieve a healthy river.

Volunteer banks on Bonnechere Manor day program Retired Royal Bank employee Janet Brush has been volunteering at the Bonnechere Manor for more than 10 years now and once again has given her employee volunteer grant of $500 to the day program. Wheelchair square dancing and satin hands sessions are among the many activities Brush has helped with over the years. Celebrating the donation are, from left, recreation programmer Stella Forrest, Teresa Manion, Joanne Vincent, Keith Orser, Christ Bujold, Brush and Renfrew RBC branch manager Marci Joyce. In 2014, RBC handed out 2,452 employee volunteer grants.

How to win markets and influence grocery buyers Bigger isn’t always better in the eyes of one businessman. “Why did we decide to focus on local? Because it’s difficult for the big players to do.” That’s the business strategy used by Jim Beveridge of B&H Your Community Grocer, an independent retailer in Kemptville. His grocery store uses its small size to its advantage in the David and Goliath struggle for market share and sales. Grocery retailers, chefs, and other food buyers are looking for local product and they want to buy local says Jessica Kelly, a direct farm marketing specialist at the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA). “Yet, when it comes to buying from farmers and small food processors, they say there’s often a gap between what they need, when they need it, and how they do business” she adds. OMAFRA has a one-day workshop in March bringing together farmers and small food processors to learn how to address those gaps. Ministry specialists in business

management, business development, food regulation and food safety can help business owners and managers learn more about different sales channels and how they work so participants can ultimately decide if there is an untapped sales channel that is right for their business. Each workshop is customized to local interests with subjects ranging from market channel opportunities, food regulations, food safety, pricing for profit, packaging and labelling. Participants will also learn where to get more information and support. Your business might benefit from selling to a local grocery store or other retailer, a restaurant or public sector organization like a university or school nutrition program. The key is to invest few hours to learn about different market opportunities and what customers expect. The Selling Food to Ontario workshop is available: March 2 in Smiths Falls, March 3 in Renfrew and March 9 in Vineland. Space is limited for this free workshop so register today at http:// www.ontario.ca/chbi .

Dog Pigeon and Eryka Howitzer Lariviere). Lou Russell stoned the opposing team once again, even going Donkey Kong on a few plays to prevent the puck from entering the net. The championship game was against hometown favourites the Belleville Bulldogs, who had fresh legs and were hungry for gold for their fans. Fans from both teams filled the stands to cheer on their daughters and see a good game. Once again, the Thunder led off the scoring with Emma the Entertainer McGrath putting the biscuit in the jar with the help of linemate Kiana Playmaker Patrick. Thunder scored again in the second after Warrior Warren and Fireball Fritsche split the defence, moving the puck quickly up to Mad Dog Pigeon who buried it. Indeed Fritsche and Warren were busy again in the third, when they scored the Thunder’s final goal of the weekend with the help of Sharkey Keetch. Lou Russell once again received credit for exceptional play between the pipes. A highlight of the weekend was celebrating the return of Peyton Gray, who had been on the injury list with a broken wing for the past six weeks. Another highlight was seeing their friends on the Peewee C team snatch the silver medal in their division. The girls continue their successful season and are still ranked first in the province with an unbelievable record of 23-3-7. They captured first-place in their regular season play last weekend, and look forward to one final tournament in Brantford in February before entering the regional playoffs and with a bit of luck and deter-

What’s happening in your community

The Ottawa Valley Peewee Thunder hockey team once again captured gold for their third consecutive tournament this season. The girls gold medal weekend occurred at the Belleville New Year’s Classic, a favourite event for the Ottawa Valley Thunder. After a relatively short drive down Highway 41, the weekend opened with a Friday afternoon game against a team they face in regular season play, the Kanata Rangers. While the play was tied after the first period with one apiece (goal credited to Abbey ‘the Warrior’ Warren, Louisa ‘Fireball’ Fritsche had the helper), the Thunder pulled ahead in the second and came away with the win (Julia ‘Bardown’ Swant with the goal, assists to Emma ‘the Entertainer’ McGrath and Kiana Playmaker Patrick). The girls’ second game was a rare 2-1 loss against hometown favourites the Belleville Bearcats. The Thunder’s sole goal was scored by team captain Emma (Hands) Peever, with Kenya (Stevie) Stevenson using a new twig, and Abbey (the Warrior) Warren helping out. Thankfully, they regrouped for their third game after some team building activities in the afternoon, and came away with a 2-0 shutout win against Nepean, another team they face regularly. Assistant captain (Mad Dog) Madison Pigeon received a beautiful pass from Hands Peever, and popped it in at the end of the first. The second period, while scoreless, was back and forth but the girls managed to bring it home in the third. Karsyn (Sharkey) Keetch found the tape of linemate Abbey Warren as the two crashed the net to score the final goal against Nepean. Alexis (Lou) Russell continued to shine as the Thunder goalie. Sunday morning’s game was a must win, so coach Jason Swant ensured the girls stayed away from pillow fights and winnertake-all card games the previous evening by instilling a 9:30 p.m. curfew. Refreshed with a good night’s sleep, the Thunder faced the Kingston Ice Wolves in an early morning showdown. Sharkey Keetch, the team sniper, led off the scoring early in the first after receiving passes from defenseman Emma (Minefield) Misener, a real shutdown player, and centreman Warrior Warren. The 2-0 victory was secured in the third with a twine-rippling shot fired by Bardown Swant (assists to Mad

KATHLEEN BELIEVED IN THE GREAT LOVE OF NEW-BORN CHILDREN AND THE IMPORTANCE OF EARLY CARE TO THEIR LIVES. FOR THAT REASON HER SON ESTABLISHED THE KATHLEEN ELIZABETH AND E. NEVILLE WARD ENDOWMENT FUND FOR NURSING EDUCATION IN HER MEMORY.

For more than 40 years our community has benefited from the care and medical expertise at CHEO. While some of us have thankfully never had to use CHEO, others have for minor or sometimes more serious issues. The one commonality we all share is a great respect and appreciation for CHEO. We want it to be here for our kids, our kids’ kids and beyond that. That is what Forever CHEO is all about!

By making a planned gift to CHEO you not only help future generations of children, but you also provide some tax relief to your estate, while still providing for your family members. Here are some ways you can create your Forever CHEO legacy: make a bequest in your Will; create an endowment fund; name CHEO as the beneficiary of your RRSPs or RRIFs; or take out a life insurance policy with CHEO as the beneficiary.

CONSIDER CREATING A TRULY LASTING LEGACY AND HELP TO ENSURE THAT CHEO IS FOREVER PART OF OUR COMMUNITY.

Your gift keeps on giving. Forever.

RCC brings home Autumn Leaves trophy Behind the Glass

In the last round of Autumn Leaves, Renfrew sent two teams to Arnprior and the team of Yvonne Sklepowicz, Laurie Millar, Laura Hanson and Linda Kidd played a dominant game to defeat Killaloe. In the afternoon, with Barb Westgarth in for Yvonne and Faye Warren in for Laura, in a tight game that came down to last rock, an angle raise takeout of a Renfrew winner on the button for three by the Arnprior skip gave the one point win to Arnprior. The rink of Gert Brydges, Barb Roy, Joan Eaton and the leads Lynn Joyce in the morning and Cathy Wall in the afternoon were on the right side of the rock to first defeat Pembroke and then on the wrong side as they lost to Arnprior. The day’s results were good enough to bring home

the Autumn Leaves trophy for the first time in many years. What made it all the more impressive was that, while the other clubs sent essentially the same teams all year, Renfrew used a large variety of players. This speaks well to the overall quality and strength of ladies curling in Renfrew. Congratulations ladies. In Monday night set teams, the winner of the A division was the team of Brian and Karen Yolkowskie, Phil Marcella and Andy Miller. Winner of B Division were Clayton and Gord Eady, Ed Hanson and Al Comba. Moving into the A along with Eady is the Gary Smith rink. Moving from A to B are the Yvonne Sklepowicz and Barb Westgarth teams. The winners of the day ladies third draw and the Clark Trophy were the team of Barb Westgarth, Susan Hanniman, Laura Hanson and Judy Gracie.

In Wednesday night skins third draw action the team of Rob and Faye Warren, Cedric Wright and Willie Curran made a great comeback from the brink of defeat to top the Andy Sklepowicz squad and take the A side, while Yvonne Sklepowicz, Tony Lapienes, Theresa Mann and Ed Boldt defeated the Don Armitage rink and the Andy Miller skipped, Cliff Valleau crew won the C. In Friendly action, Renfrew sent three teams to Shawville and only the Bill Bowles’ team with Sandra Fredette, Kathy O’Donnell and Judy Gracie came home with a victory. Coming out on the wrong end of two well-played games were the Leo McCallum and Shelley Jamieson rinks.

Galoshes brought back bad memories STAN MCCORMACK/SUBMITTED

Jack and Ilse Vooght, residents of Calabogie, and Lois McCormack of Renfrew at a district shuffleboard tournament in Lakeland, Florida.

Ever wonder what Renfrewites do in Florida during the winter? Stan McCormack

Our weather has been unusually hot, but as the photo from a recent district shuffleboard tournament in Lakeland, Florida, we were hit by a cold snap; no doubt from Canada! Shuffleboard is a major activity for Canadians who spend a good part of their winter in Florida. At any given tournament they are well represented, with their numbers often exceeding the Americans participating. That is not to say that everything is perfect, especially this year with the diminished Canadian dollar. Canadians continue to come because most have property that they have

owned for years, some for up to 25 years. Most have established close friendships with their neighbours, many telling you they have more friends here than in their hometown in Canada. To offset the dollar decline, many have cut back on eating out and making purchases they would otherwise contemplate. But there is one thing they will not cut back on, and that is shuffleboard. Best described as a healthy activity for both mind and body, many play five days a week. Shuffleboard does not cease in Renfrew when the Snowbirds ‘fly south.’ Shuffling continues every Tuesday at the Champlain Senior Centre, 164 Argyle St. in Renfrew.

Father was sitting on the bench at the back door. The washbasin and soap dish had been placed on the floor underneath, and beside Father’s feet was the shoebox. It was made of wood, and had the shape of a shoe sole tilted on one side. This is where Father placed his foot when he wanted to put a shine to his Sunday boots. He removed from inside, the piece of rubber, and a baking powder tin that had holes punched in the bottom, which he would use to scrape the spot where the rubber would go, when it was cut into the right size for a patch to be glued on to the galoshes or gum rubbers he was working on. I tried not to look at the galoshes on the floor beside him. These were the very same galoshes Father had tried to patch a couple weeks before Christmas. The memory of that night was one I would be a long time erasing from my mind. I thought as the winter wore on, I might be able to forget that night, but I couldn’t. I had seen the beautiful doll one day in the dime store, and I could talk of nothing else when I got home. I even wrote Santa a letter asking if he might consider putting the doll under our Christmas tree.

Mary Cook’s Memories Mary Cook

That night, as I raved on about the doll, and said how much I longed for it, it was then Father held up Mother’s worn galoshes and said, if Santa had any heart he would bring new galoshes for Mother. And then, like a miracle the doll had appeared that Christmas morning under the tree. And there were no new galoshes for Mother. And now, every time I watched Father working on our galoshes and rubber boots, hoping to get a bit more wear out of them by gluing on rubber patches, my mind reeled back to that fateful night when I begged for the doll. I thought, if I didn’t watch Father, maybe I could forget about the sacrifice that was made, and stop wondering how Santa knew about that beautiful doll, and how it ended up under our tree. And as the winter wore on, Mother wore those old galoshes, patches on top of patches and there was never enough money

KITCHENS

to replace them. So I got to praying. I prayed that it would be a short winter, that the patches would hold onto the galoshes, and I even prayed that I would stop fretting about how Santa brought me the doll and no new galoshes for Mother. And that night, as I watched Father once again try to repair what looked to me beyond fixing, I wondered how much more wear Mother would get out of them, and how Renfrew County could possibly handle one more snow flake! Old Herman said it was the worst winter he had ever seen. Mother’s shoes fitted inside the galoshes, and there was a strip of tattered fur around their tops covering the laces down to the toes. I thought they were probably as old as I was. Certainly I had no memory of Mother ever buying them. And they were black... as black as night. As hard as I tried, I couldn’t stop watching Father working away at the galoshes. And then he reached into his back pocket and took out a pair of brand new black laces. They were wrapped in a red paper sleeve. He took out the old laces and worked in the new ones, tying a knot at the top. He was in his stockinged

BATHROOMS

feet, and he put the galoshes on. I had no idea what he was going to do in Mother’s galoshes, when it was just about time to go to bed. And then, one after the other, he placed his foot on the wood sole on the shoe box, and rubbed black shoe polish all over the galoshes, covering the patches and all. He took a brush out of the shoe box, one I had seen him use many times on his Sunday boots, and with fierce strokes he brushed and brushed until I thought he would wear the rubber right down to the canvas that lined the galoshes. He held them up when he was finished, and they were as shiny as a fry pan, and looked like they had just come out of the store. “Good as new,” he said. And I wondered after, whenever I cradled that beautiful doll, how long it would take for me to release the feeling of sadness I felt whenever I looked at Mother’s galoshes, patch on top of patch. Winter carnival in Admaston this weekend Tiffany Lepack

tlepack@metroland.com

The Admaston recreation committee is gearing up to host its first-ever winter carnival. The event is taking place Feb. 19 to 21 at 182 Stone Rd., next to Admaston Public School. Recreation committee member Angela Field explains there is some recollection of a winter festival in the area but nothing for a long time. “We’ve had people ask why we don’t have one and we decided would have one,” said Field. “We hope people will come out and have a good time.” All of the events are free to take part in, which she hopes will encourage more people to come out. “It’s free to participate in so it’s a good activity for families on a budget,” said Field. The weekend starts with a friendly family game of shinny

The weather looks good for the next couple of days so hopefully it will be nice.” On Saturday they will have a hockey tournament starting at 11 a.m. and Sunday there will be a family skate from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There are a number of events planned for Saturday including a barbecue from noon to 2 p.m. and 4 to 7 p.m., a snowball fight at noon, snowman competition from 1 to 2 p.m. and from 3-4 p.m., puck toss, 50/50 draw and more. CARROLL, Tom – In memory of a dearly loved and cherished husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather and great grandfather who passed away February 18, 2014 Remembering you is easy, We do it every day. Missing you is a heartache, That never goes away. You had a smile for everyone, You had a heart of gold. You left the sweetest memories The world could ever hold. To us you were someone special, What more is there to say? Except to wish with all our hearts, That you were here today. Dearly missed and forever loved, Betty, Barbara and Keith, Margaret and Darwin, Kevin and Liz Patricia and Steve, Tom and Lois, Christine and Peter, Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren

GUILBEAULT, Rita July 29, 1936-February 11, 2010 The moment that you died, My heart split in two, The one side filled with memories, The other died with you. I often lay awake at night, When the world is fast asleep, And take a walk down memory lane. With tears upon my cheek, Remembering you is easy, I do it every day, But missing you is a heartache, That never goes away.
