New digs for OPP TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com

The boxes are moved and the officers are getting settled into their new home. Feb. 15 marked the official move in day at the new Renfrew Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) detachment at 450 O’Brien Rd. The building was closed for the move but it was scheduled to reopen for business on Feb. 16. For Renfrew OPP Detachment Commander Insp. Colin Slight, this day means a lot. “It means we are moving into a contemporary police facility that is Tiffany Lepack/Metroland large enough to house everyone,” said Renfrew Mayor Don Eady holds the door open for Renfrew OPP Detachment Commander Insp. Colin Slight as he moves a box into the new Slight.

Renfrew council eyes possible sale of post office building TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com

Renfrew council is exploring its options when it comes to the post office building. A notice of motion has been issued on one of the town’s most historic buildings, after Renfrew town council emerged from an in camera session on Feb. 14. The motion states that Renfrew council deem the property at 249 Raglan St. S., surplus to the needs of the municipality. The motion directs staff to issue a request for proposal for real estate broker services to sell 249 Raglan St. South, and that council direct staff to commence the Ontario Heritage Act designation process for the property, or alternatively through title covenants. The property is the old Renfrew town hall. The post office and the Birthplace NHA/NHL Museum are currently tenants there. The issue will be discussed and deliberated at Renfrew council’s next regular meeting, on March 14 at 7 p.m. HUNTER’S GATE

At the Jan. 17 Renfrew council meeting, the application for phase four of the Hunter’s Gate subdivision was approved. The new development has a total of 96.63 acres, of which about 35 acres can be developed, and 61.63 acres is located within the ravine. “This phase of development will provide for the continued orderly development within Hunter’s Gate,” said Ivan

Burton, town planner. “It is estimated to provide for three to five years of housing growth within this area of the town of Renfrew.” Phase four will consist of 13 lots of single detached dwellings, and 51 multiple attached dwellings (row houses). The new development will also include a new road called Forestview Crescent and will extend Hall Avenue. Final approval was set to go to Renfrew County in mid-February. EXPANSION

Ensyn Technologies Inc. received approval from the Town of Renfrew for the construction of two new structures at 1 Innovation Dr., the Renfrew Industrial Commission (RIC) building, on Jan. 17. “It’s a great success story for Renfrew,” said Dave Lemkay, executive director at RIC. “It’s an addition to the facility, they have created a win-win situation.” He calls them a keystone tenant as they have been at the location since 2004. “They are continuing to invest and grow their infrastructure,” said Lemkay. “It allows them to improve their efficiencies.” Ensyn has 40 employees and operates 24/7 creating a specialized product. “It’s a unique product because they utilize residue (sawdust) into pyrolysis oil.” They are set to build a 40,000-gallon storage tank, which will house their final product ready for shipment, and a 15,000-square-foot raw material storage to store about 17,000 tons of green wood sawdust and shavings.

OPP move into new building at 450 O’Brien Rd: streamlines operations From front page

“I think it will streamline operations and will make the process a lot easier than having to drive two kilometres across town to meet with individuals.” The Renfrew detachment has approximately 60 uniformed officers working out of it with two more in the highway safety division traffic unit. “The ones that are moving here today are certainly excited. This is the first chance they have been able to walk through the doors and look at this,” said Slight. “So today is an exciting day. It is the first day they see the tiles, the paint, and it’s certainly for them a long time coming.” The $5-million project is scheduled to come in just under budget after the final items have been reconciled. It is a unique partnership between the OPP and the County of Renfrew, and officials were on hand to mark the big day. The county owns the building and the OPP are its leaseholders. “Certainly being a landlord and being able to assist having this project move forward was very important to the OPP and to the County of Renfrew,” said County Warden Jennifer Murphy.“For the officers, I think this is going to make such a difference, as Insp. Slight said to streamlining their operations from two facilities that didn’t work to this beautiful contem-

why,” said Emon.“It’s a good business decision for the county and the OPP to locate here, now have 60 people working out of this office. It’s a good economic develop opportunity.” The new building sits on 20 acres and this project will take up three acres. The building itself is 16,000 square feet, which is similar to the OPP building in Pembroke.

The new OPP base will serve a number of areas, including Arnprior, Renfrew, Admaston-Bromley, Horton, Greater Madawaska, McNab-Braeside and part of Whitewater Region. Slight noted the Arnprior detachment is still in operation. “There is no expected changes at that location,” said Slight. “We have 12-14 people working out of that loca-

tion. Front-line policing services will continue in Arnprior with no change. It will just affect the Renfrew locations, where we had two locations now we just have one house.” The Stewart Street detachment had been used for almost 60 years and the detachment at town hall had been used since 1972. Renfrew Mayor Don Eady, who has toured both of the old buildings, thinks the move will alter the policing services in the town. “Its certainly going to change the town of Renfrew from the building point of view, we now have the total town office complex free to use as we wish,” said Eady. “Secondly, I’ve been though both the OPP facilities in the Town of Renfrew and the OPP have outgrown them badly. The town office facility was not a good facility, very cut up not a good functional building. I think their move here will make for a better police force and for more safety for the people of the town.” Plans are now in the works for a grand opening sometime in the spring or early summer, with a number of officials and dignitaries on hand. Slight gave media on hand a small tour of the public spaces, which include an office for Victim Services, an interview room, the front lobby and a board room that can be used for meetings and as a virtual classroom.

Lee McVeigh-Sharpe, the 2016 Renfrew Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year, has passed away. She died peacefully after what is described as a courageous battle with cancer at the age of 79. Visitation is scheduled for Feb. 23 from 3 to 8 p.m. and the memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 24; both services will be held at the RCAF Wing, 164 Argyle St., in Renfrew. McVeigh-Sharpe was involved in numerous organizations in Renfrew: she volunteered at the Bonnechere Manor, was a charter member of Friends of Disabled Renfrew and a founder of the Sunshine Coach of Renfrew. As well, she was an active member of the Renfrew Curling Club and the Renfrew Golf Club where she became the first and to date only woman president. Renfrew Mayor Don Eady said she played an important part in the community. “Lee McVeigh-Sharpe meant a tremendous amount to the community, she was basically the founder of the Sunshine Coach, which we all know is a really important part of our town,” said Eady. The mayor knew her well and passionately described her work ethic. “She was a doer, very much a doer, when she took a project on she made sure it got done,” said Eady. He cited the new brine pipes and the fundraising efforts at the curling club as one of her many projects.

“She took the bull by the horns and got that done, now we have new brine pipes in the curling rink, which is a big asset to the Town of Renfrew,” said Eady. McVeigh-Sharpe first moved to Renfrew in 1979. She had been heavily involved with the Sunshine Coach over the years and in 2015 the building was dedicated the Lee Sharpe Sunshine Centre. Norm Dagg, Sunshine Coach Service executive director, had known her for eight years; she even sat on the board that hired him. “She was always very dynamic and a very getit-done person,” said Dagg. “When she saw something that needed to be done, she rolled up her sleeves and got it done. She was never afraid of work.” She was even working on the current Ride The Bus campaign. “She was working hard right until she couldn’t,” said Dagg. One of his favourite memories of her is when they dedicated the building the Lee Sharpe Sunshine Centre. “She was not easy to surprise and we were able to surprise her with the plaque, and she was very surprised and grateful,” said Dagg. Anne Windle was a good friend of McVeighSharpe for 40 years. The two travelled extensively together and last year won the curling championship together. “She was lot’s of fun, always laughing and joking around,” said Windle. “She was a great ambassador for the town, always friendly and always helping you out.” See SHARPE page 5

Yakabuski appointed labour, training critic Last week, RenfrewNipissing-Pembroke MPP John Yakabuski was appointed the Official Opposition’s Critic for Labour and Training. As part of his new role as Labour and Training Critic, Yakabuski will be responsible for working with unions and businesses throughout the province to find innovative solutions to the pressing problem of the gap in skilled tradespeople. “I am excited to be given the important role and am looking forward to tackling the vital issues that this portfolio brings,” said Yakabuski. Yakabuski said that for more than a decade, the Liberal government has been inadequately addressing the pressing needs of the province’s changing labour market. “Through the mismanagement of this portfolio, the Liberal government has neglected this dire issue of Ontario not having enough skilled tradespeople to meet the demand,” he said. “I am looking forward to working with industry stakeholders so that under a Progressive

JOHN YAKABUSKI Conservative government, there will be a focus on creating an environment where labour and businesses have the ability to prosper.” Along with the new assignment of Labour and Training Critic, Yakabuski will continue to serve as the Chief Whip of the Official Opposition. In addition to these important roles, he remains committed to ensuring the issues and voices of the residents of RenfrewNipissing-Pembroke are represented in the provincial legislature. “The residents of Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke will always be at the forefront of my actions in the legislature. My top priority is ensuring that the issues, concerns, and interests are always well represented.”

Sharpe loved to travel From page 4

She played a number of different positions on the ice and was a very good curler. “She used the stick and was very good at it,” said Windle. “She was deadly at times.” They went on many trips together: Quebec City, Alaska, Austria, Switzerland, cruises and more. “She loved to travel, she had a bucket list, her last place she wanted to go was

to Africa, she was going in February if everything worked out,” said Windle. Even in her last wishes she is giving back to the town she loved so much. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Sunshine Coach (Friends of the Disabled, Renfrew), or Hospice Renfrew can be made online at www.zohrfuneralhome.com and would be appreciated by the family.

Town of Renfrew approves new social media policy TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com

The Town of Renfrew approved a new website and social media policy on Feb. 14. The 24-page report is a policy statement for the use of the relaunched website and various social media accounts. Town clerk Kim Bulmer told council they currently have fringe Facebook pages and are looking to move more in the corporate direction. “This is putting a high level framework on how we manage social media and the website,” said Bulmer.

“It’s a living document that can be tweaked as we go along.” Coun. Kate Windle declared a pecuniary interest at the start of the discussion and removed herself from the council chambers. Reeve Peter Emon noted the town would be able to take control of all social media accounts to get a message out. “If something significant happens, the same message goes out,” said Emon. Coun. Tom Sidney thought it was time to use this platform. “In 2017, we as a corporation need to have this,” said Sidney. “It’s definitely needed,

and a lot of work went into it.” After the meeting, Arlene Jamieson, chair of the economic development committee, said it’s the proper way for the information to get out on social media. “People are always going to get on there and say whatever they want. “When you are in the town of Renfrew, when you are on council or a staffer, there has to be a policy in place so it’s done properly,” said Jamieson. “So the information getting out there is accurate and true because a lot of times it’s just people who get on there and

get on a rant, and it gets turned around.” The report states the town ‘may’ make use of highly visible, popular and readily accessible social media tools such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Instagram, Kijiji and an e-newsletter. “(Social media) is an important part of where we are going. Social media has become so important in our whole society, you need structure, and this will give us some structure on how it will be done,” said Renfrew Mayor Don Eady. Jamieson said the launch of the social media accounts

would happen sooner rather than later. The Renfrew Fire Department and the Parks and Recreation Department both have their own Facebook pages, and Jamieson says they might be tweaked. The report also states the economic development officer would be on the website/social media steering committee. “That particular contract is only six months but we are putting out another one and this will become a full-time position, that’s what we are planning,” said Jamieson. “That person will always be

involved.” Bulmer confirmed they are currently looking at grant funds to continue with an economic development program and position. Both Jamieson and Eady have heard a lot of positive feedback on the new website. “I encourage people, if they have any comments favourable or suggestions, we are wide open,” said Eady. “This is a brand new website and anything that is brand new sometimes needs a little tweaking. “We are very open to what people want to see.”

Municipal government seeks to improve communication with second newsletter TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com

In an effort to improve communications with residents, the Town of Renfrew has created a new municipal newsletter. The ‘Our Town’ newsletter, sent to every door in town, is a four-page, glossy, with photos and has a number of different sections: a letter from

the mayor, town symbols, Renfrew’s plans for Canada’s 150 celebrations, Renfrew Hydro Inc., Open Books: The Capital Budget/Operating Budget, infrastructure, Renfrew Fire Department and the Renfrew Library. This new publication is not the only municipal newsletter residents have received. An existing newsletter, put out by the town’s recreation department, is blue and white on regular paper and also has a number of sections:

recreations, bylaw information on cat and dog tags, the Renfrew Fire Department and the Renfrew Library. Residents have been receiving this one for years. During the new business section of Renfrew council on Feb. 13 Mayor Don Eady spoke about the new piece of correspondence and told council “the first ever newsletter was sent out and the response has been really good.” When asked about the newsletters the day af-

ter council the mayor explained the differences between the two. “What I should have said (at council) was this was the first newsletter of this type,” explained Eady. “The other one goes out on a regular basis from the recreation department, it’s not the same, the first part is recreation, to keep people up-to-date on everyday functions. There could be a slight overlap.” See MAYOR, page 14

OPINION

Connected to your community

The future of our media

If you are reading this, then you should be interested in the recently released report commissioned by the federal government dealing with ways to address the current upheaval in Canada’s media. The report, authored by respected Canadian journalist Edward Greenspon on behalf of the public policy forum think-tank, contains 12 recommendations meant to strengthen the Canadian journalism landscape and ensure that it can continue to provide the scope and depth of reporting that Canadians have come to expect from their media. This report is particularly relevant with regard to Canada’s print media, which is being faced with shrinking ad and subscription revenues and job cuts. The report sees this as a threat to our democracy. After all, if we lack the information to know what is going on, there will be no informed electorate and our democracy will not function as it should, particularly with the advent of fake news or so-called alternative facts. Another scenario that is equally worrying, though, is the role of the media and more particularly community newspapers in the creation and promotion of “community.” Part of being a community is knowing what is going on locally, is knowing who are your neighbours, is taking pride in being part of that defined space that is known as “your community.” Indeed, Canada can be viewed as a vast community of communities with common values and ideals. And what is a significant feature of a local community? Yes, that’s right – you are holding it in your hands right now. The community newspaper. A robust community newspaper industry is one way of protecting and growing our local communities. Vibrant communities are, we believe, just as vital to the future of our society as is a robust democracy. Communities are the stage on which people primarily come together. That’s why all Canadians must take seriously proposals to strengthen our journalism vehicles in this country, including community newspapers. A media in crisis endangers both our democracy and our communities. With two such pillars of our society both being under threat from pressures on the media these days, taking steps to assist the media in meeting these current challenges should be of interest to all Canadians.

Lee Sharpe’s big heart will live on To the editor:

Lee McVeigh-Sharpe had such a heart to help others. Many of us have stories to tell. However, there is one story that we may not be so familiar with. In the early 1980s, when Larry (her future husband) survived their accident there were no rehabilitation programs nor services for persons living with the effects of a traumatic brain injury (TBI). Families were on their own. Lee recognized the need for information, support and advocacy for these survivors and their families, and in 1982 served as a co-founder of the Head Injury Association Ottawa and Valley (HIA OV), now Brain Injury Association Ottawa Valley (BIA OV). Through the years this association has grown to become a very valuable resource – another legacy for Lee that lives on.

Lee was able to offer comfort to several families in the Renfrew area, and through Friends of the Disabled, also some social contact. We think now of Jim and Effie Robertson, whose son Roy spent several years in Renfrew Victoria Hospital; Ralph and Joy Bernard, and their son Graydon; our own son Mark, who enjoyed those evenings out with ‘friends.’ Several in Renfrew will recall Lee organizing their many volunteer hours working with Larry in his brain re-patterning program that took him from a long-term-bed in Ottawa to become a familiar face at so many Renfrew events. She will be missed by all, but her spirit and “great big heart” will live on.

BEHIND CLOSED DOORS: A SERIES ON INTIMATE PARTNER VIOLENCE IN RENFREW COUNTY - 1 OF 3

Ending Violence Against Women (EVA)-Renfrew County is a committee that focuses on prevention, education, systemic change, and service provision related to violence against women. More than half of all women in Canada have experienced at least one incident of physical or sexual violence since the age of 16. Approximately every 6 days, a woman in Canada is killed by her intimate partner. On any given night in Canada, 3,200 women and their 3000 children sleep in shelters because it isn’t safe at home. Yet we often turn a blind eye to the violence next door, thinking it isn’t any of our business. When the public or media do pay attention to Intimate partner violence it is after the fact, when it is already too late to save someone from injury or even death. We must start making it our business. This 3 part series on intimate partner violence aims to increase understanding in our communities, with the hope of preventing harm and increasing support to our neighbours, friends and family members who are experiencing abuse. Follow us on Facebook @EVA-End Violence AgainstWomen-Renfrew County and If you wish to get involved do not hesitate to reach us at evarenfrewcounty@gmail.com.

What is Intimate Partner Violence? We define Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) as a pattern of abusive behavior in any relationship that is used by one partner to gain or maintain power and control over another intimate partner. The frequency and severity of IPV can vary dramatically. IPV can be physical, sexual, emotional, economic, or psychological actions or threats of actions that influence another person. This includes any behaviors that intimidate, manipulate, humiliate, isolate, frighten, terrorize, coerce, threaten, blame, hurt, injure, or wound someone. IPV can happen to anyone regardless of race, age, sexual orientation, religion, or gender. IPV affects people of all socioeconomic backgrounds and education levels. IPV occurs in both opposite-sex and same-sex relationships and can happen to intimate partners who are married, living together, or dating. IPV can result in physical injury, psychological trauma, and in severe cases, even death. The devastating physical, emotional, and psychological consequences of IPV can cross generations and last a lifetime.

Warning Signs for Neighbours, Friends, and Families You may suspect abuse is happening to a neighbour, friend or family member, but do not know what to do or how to talk about it. By understanding the warning signs and risk factors of woman abuse, you can help. If you recognize some of these warning signs, it may be time to take action: • She is nervous about talking when he’s there; • She seems to be sick more often and misses work; • She tries to cover her bruises; • She makes excuses at the last minute about why she can’t meet you; • She seems sad, lonely, withdrawn and is afraid; and/or • She uses more drugs or alcohol to cope; • He puts her down; • He does all the talking and dominates the conversation; • He checks up on her all the time, even at work; • He tries to keep her away from you; • He acts as if he owns her;

THE DANGER may be greater if: • She has just separated or is planning to leave; • She fears for her life and for her children’s safety or she cannot see her risk; • She is in a custody battle, or has children from a previous relationship; • She is involved in another relationship; 10 The Renfrew Mercury - Thursday, February 23, 2017

• She faces other obstacles (e.g. she lives in a remote area, no access to a phone); • He has access to her and her children; • He has access to weapons; • He has threatened to harm or kill her if she leaves him; • He has threatened to kill himself; • He has hit her, choked her; • He is going through major life changes (e.g. job, separation, depression); • He doesn’t seek support; • He watches her, listens to her phone conversations, sees her emails and follows her; • He has trouble keeping a job; • He takes drugs or drinks every day; • He has no respect for the law. If you recognize one or more of these danger signs, be aware that the victim may be at risk of being murdered. Never assume that a victim is safe because she is planning to leave a violent relationship or has just left. Although leaving will increase her safety over the long term, the most dangerous time for her is just before she separates, while she is leaving and shortly after she separates. Safety planning is critical during this period. *Reprinted from the Neighbours, Friends and Families Campaign

DISPELLING THE MYTHS! Myths and facts about Violence against women: MYTH: Violence against women rarely happens. FACT: Violence toward women is extremely common, with half of Canadian women having survived at least one incident of physical or sexual violence throughout their lifetime.

MYTH: If women really wanted to leave a violent relationship they would. FACT: Abused women leaving their partners are faced with the reality of severe physical assault or even death. Abusers may isolate their partners, depriving them of jobs, social and educational opportunities while maintaining control. This combined with unequal opportunities for women makes it difficult for a woman to leave a violent relationship.

L’histoire de Mary Mary’s Story After 10 years of abuse Mary decided to take her children and leave the relationship and the family farm. In order to leave safely she had to go while her partner was away for a weekend. Mary realized there was no place to hide in a village of 800 people and in order to protect herself and her family she would have to go to and stay in the shelter more than 80 kilometers away. She had saved a few dollars here and there from the grocery money to pay a “relief worker” to come in and milk the dairy cattle for three days until her husband came back to the farm. In Mary’s view – leaving the farm not only meant leaving her abusive partner it also meant changing her life as she knew it. Mary feels like she doesn’t belong in the shelter. Her children are used to walking in the woods, riding their snowmobiles and playing with the pets. They ask their mother when they are going to be able to go back home. Mary is starting to consider it.

Support furry friends during second Empties for Paws weekend SHERRY HAAIMA sherry.haaima@metroland.com

It’s the Valley’s most ‘paw-some’ fundraiser. The second annual Empties for Paws bottle drive blitz is coming up Feb. 25 and 26 and the event founder, along with supporters, is excited about this year’s campaign. “Donate your empty beer, wine, liquor bottles/cans and Canadian Tire money Feb. 25-26 to help raise funds for our furry friends,” says a recent press release. “This February, share the love and donate your empties. Please help us spread the word and let’s raise some much-needed funds!” Empties for Paws founder Gisele Villeneuve, along new partner Bonnie Ellis, has high hopes for this year’s Empties for Paws bottle drive blitz, which supports animal shelters in the area. Last year’s event was a resounding success, said Villeneuve, and yearround donations to Empties For Paws are growing. “We’re helping the environment and animals at the same time,” she said, adding people have been quick to support the fundraiser. “We chose February because its the month of love and the SPCAs have a cupcake fundraiser going on,” said Villeneuve. “Share the love, save the animals.” She started Empties for Paws in January 2015 and said she is pleased some donors contribute all year and she’s able to regularly bring funds to

local shelters. The permanent bin at Mill Music has been a great asset to the organization. Ellis has now established a drop-off location at her store Country View Mini Mart at 68 Calabogie Rd. She first learned of the initiative in a Renfrew Mercury article and immediately began collecting for the cause. “I realized nobody was collecting in my area, McNab-Braeside, so I started a bin,” she said. She’s collected $1,200 worth of empties so far. Ellis said after adopting her Bichon two years ago she realized that the difference in the amount of money shelters spend on rescued animals versus what they get paid in adoption fees. “I wanted to pay it forward,” she said. “A complete list of rescues and drop-off locations is available on our website: www.emptiesforpaws.com. We have over 65 animal rescues/shelters listed in the Ottawa Valley, Ottawa, Gatineau and across Ontario. We also have listings in Edmonton and Fredericton,” said the press release. Since the inception of Empties for Paws in January 2015 more than $56,000 has been raised. Empties can be donated all year round and not just on Feb. 25-26. Empties for Paws can work anywhere. If the rescue you wish to support doesn’t collect empties, we ask you to take this opportunity to cash in your empties and donate the funds directly to your preferred rescue.

Mayor of Renfrew seeks to improve town communications

00 ARGYLE ST. S. Commercial lot would suit a convenience store/car wash unlimited possibilities. Located on busy street with different business opportunities!! $100,000 MLS# 1033745 Cathy O’Neil 613-432-0073 or Gerry O’Neil 613-432-2333

“This is more of what we have accomplished and what we hope to accomplish. There is a little bit of an overlap, they are not the same,” said Eady. Town of Renfrew clerk Kim Bulmer confirmed the recreation department does take the lead on the ‘blue’ newsletter. “When there is space other tidbits of municipal information is put in, they try to maximize the space,” said Bulmer. However, nowhere does it say it is from the recreation department. Eady noted the ‘blue’ newsletter had been going out for years. “It is a totally different type of newsletter, he said, stressing the town wants to keep residents well informed. In the ‘Our Town’ newsletter Eady writes, “One of the frequent comments I have heard is about communications. Some residents want more information about what’s happening

in our town, and why it’s happening. This newsletter is another step in improving two-way communications between town hall, its council and staff.” “When it comes to communication you have to repeat yourself to some degree,” the mayor concluded. Bulmer explained the ‘Our Town’ newsletter was a directive from the economic development committee to staff and it is being done on a trial basis. “It is new, it’s a trial to see how it’s received, if the information is well received it could be done quarterly or semi-annually,” said Bulmer. “One or both might go … if it is viewed to be not worth it, it will be determined.” According to Bulmer the ‘Our Town’ newsletter cost the town $2,300 to produce, copy and send it out by bulk delivery. The ‘blue’ newsletter is sent out once a month: eight times it is sent out via town bills and the four other times it goes out by bulk mail (55 cents per sheet).

Christians mark World Day of Prayer March 3 ‘Am I Being Unfair to You?’ Before the World Wide Web, there was the World Day of Prayer, an international event that has been connecting people in a meaningful way for almost a century. Despite being planned years in advance, World Day of Prayer services have a remarkable record for anticipating major events, like the refugee crisis (France 2013), the Arab Spring (Egypt 2014) and the winding down of the U.S. embargo against Cuba (Cuba 2016). The secret to this depth and insight is the women who plan and write each World Day of Prayer service. Too often, women have the most intimate experiences of armed conflict, violence, social injustice, and human rights violations. What might Canadians learn from women of the Philippines, a country on the front lines of climate change, foreign mining and resources interests, a regional insurgency and social upheaval due to migration, who wrote the World Day of Prayer 2017? How will we answer the question, “Am I being unfair to you?” On March 3, Christians in more than 170 countries and in 2,000 communities across Canada will gather

to learn about, pray, and celebrate in solidarity with the women of The Philippines through the World Day of Prayer. Please join us and invite your friends and family to attend the World Day of Prayer 2017. Two local World Day of Prayer Services will be held this year: • In Arnprior at St. John Chrysostom Parish, 295 Albert St. on Friday, March 3 at 1:30 p.m. For more information on the Arnprior service contact Connie Townley-Emery at 613623-5135. • In Renfrew the service will be held at Trinity-St. Andrew’s United Church, 291 Plaunt St. South on March 3 at 2 p.m. For more information on Renfrew’s service, contact Marg McLeish at 613-433-9913. In Canada, the World Day of Prayer is co-ordinated by the Women’s InterChurch Council of Canada. The World Day of Prayer has its roots in an ecumenical day of prayer organized by women in Canada and the United States in 1920. This event became the international World Day of Prayer in 1922, and Christians around the world began celebrating this event on the first Friday of March.

ARC Carnival

Ice fishing derby in Calabogie on Feb. 25

The Admaston Recreation Committee held its annual winter carnival on Jan. 28 at the outside rink at Admaston Public School, the hockey tournament was the big draw as well as snow games for the young and old.

16th annual Jamie Wright Memorial Derby TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com

Here fishy, fishy, fish! Neither ice nor snow will stop the dedicated outdoorsperson from enjoying a beloved winter tradition. The Calabogie Fish and Game Association is hosting the 16th annual Jamie Wright Memorial Derby on Saturday, Feb. 25 from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Barnet Cottage Park. Todd McDonald is a member of the club and one of the event organizers and stresses the event is for everyone. “It’s a great family event with lots of good prizes,” said McDonald. There are lots of prizes geared toward the younger entrants as well. “It’s very family oriented, one of our prizes is for most fish caught by a junior. Sometimes they get 20 perch, so size doesn’t matter,” said McDonald. “That is the future of our club, and conservation to get kids involved.” Jamie Wright was killed in an industrial incident in December 2011. When Jamie died he was the president of the club. “He was very dedicated to the fish and game club and did lots of work to

bring the youth in and keep the club going,” said McDonald. And his mother Mary is still involved with the event. “The food is very reasonably priced, hot dogs, chili, candy, drinks,” said McDonald. “Mary is a great cook too!” Anglers can register on-site or preregister at Joe Ballas Bait and Tackle at 11602 Lanark Rd. (Highway 511) or by calling 613-752-1282. Cost is $8 for adults and $3 for juniors (17 and under). Adult prizes include: first place draw — trophy and $600 ($700 with a paid membership). “Every time you can catch a legal pickerel or pike your name gets entered,” said McDonald. “The more you catch the more chances you have to win.” Second prize is $200 and third place is $50. For the juniors, first place is a trophy and $150 (or junior can register as an adult but not as both), second place: $100 and third place is $50. Other prizes: first pike wins $100 and first legal pickerel (50cm) - $100. There will be door prizes drawn throughout the day and special prize draw for pre-registration.

Fourth place

RCI goaltender Meadow Congdon prepares to make a save in a recent game girls’ hockey game in Arnprior. The team was in fourth place as of last week with a record of 3-3-1.

One of Lee’s greatest desires was to give back to the community of Renfrew that had shown her and her family so much love, especially after Lee and Larry’s car accident. She volunteered at The Bonnechere Manor, was a Charter member of Friends of the Disabled Renfrew and a Founder of The Sunshine Coach of Renfrew. And she was involved in many fundraising activities. All of these efforts resulted in Lee being named the 2016 Citizen of the Year. Lee loved her family, friends, dancing, travelling, golf, curling, her volunteer work and the odd party. In Loving Memory of

Elsworth John Thompson February 25, 2009 The moment that you died, Our heart split in two, The one side filled with memories, The other died with you. We often lay awake at night, When the world is fast asleep, And take a walk down memory lane, With tears upon our cheeks, Remembering you is easy, We do it every day, But missing you is a heartache, That never goes away. We hold you tight within our hearts, And there you will remain, Life goes on without you, But it will never be the same. For those who still have their dads, Treat him with tender care, You will never know the emptiness, As when you turn and he is not there. Camp Lau-Ren

On this occasion maybe Mary was a little spoiled My brother Emerson was fond of saying I was spoiled rotten. I said that was plain nonsense. Didn’t I have chores to do like everyone else? Wasn’t I responsible for keeping the wood box filled, and the water pan under the icebox emptied? Now, I admit I was allowed a boiled egg and toast when everyone else was eating liver or blood pudding. But that was because I threw up once, right at the table, when I was told I had to eat everything on my plate, and that included a piece of fried blood pudding! Well, Emerson had plenty to say about my being spoiled the day a parcel came in the mail addressed to me, coming all the way from Aunt Lizzie in Regina. There it was when I got home from school, sitting on the bake table at the back door. I tore into it even before I took off my coat! And right before my eyes was a pair of galoshes with black fur going down the front and circling around the back. I broke into tears of sheer joy and clutched them to my chest. How did Aunt Lizzie know I dreamed of a pair of real galoshes? And then I remembered when I printed my thankyou letter to her for the fur muff she sent me for Christmas, and I said I hoped one day I would have a pair of fur-trimmed galoshes to match! Bad Marguirite had white ones, with white fur, if you can imagine! The only pair at the Northcote School. But I never once dreamed of owning anything so elegant, and here right before me were fur trimmed galoshes...to replace the rubber ones with buckles my sister Audrey had worn before me. I was still holding them when my brothers and father came in from chores for their supper. Emerson wondered if there was anything else in the parcel… maybe Aunt Lizzie had included a small gift for everyone. I assured him the only thing in the parcel was what I was holding in my hands. “Spoiled rotten,” he said under his breath. I even took them to the supper table! Holding them on my lap, I could hardly eat, I was so excited. That night, after the kitchen had

Mary Cook’s Memories MARY COOK

been redded up, and the oilcloth on the table wiped clean, everyone settled down to their usual evening activities. But I was too excited to get out my jacks, or look through Eaton’s catalogue. All I wanted to do was sit with the spanking new galoshes in front of me on the table... stroking the fur, and tying and untying the laces. I had never had lace ties with shiny ends on them before! What luxury, I thought. They sat right beside my bed that night. I didn’t trust Emerson not to do them harm when I was asleep. The next morning, as we were getting ready for school, I sat down on the bench by the back door, ready to put on the new galoshes. That’s when Mother said they were not for school...they were to be worn on Sundays for church, or special occasions. I couldn’t believe my ears! Brand new fur-trimmed galoshes and I wasn’t allowed to wear them!!! I begged and I pleaded, but Mother wasn’t to be swayed. “Too good to plow through the snow all the way to school...they’d be ruined,” she said. Back on went the old rubbers with the steel clasps. When I got to school, the first thing I did was announce to everyone within earshot what my rich aunt from Regina had sent me. My friends Joyce and Velma were as pleased as I was. But bad Marguirite’s only comment, which cut me to the bone, was “too bad they are black.” Interested in an electronic version of Mary’s books? Go to https://www. smashwords.com and type MaryRCook for e-book purchase details, or if you would like a hard copy, please contact Mary at wick2@sympatico.ca.
