Reed Anderson is very into his pancake and excited to have more during the pancake celebrations at the Kids Corp. Ontario Early Years Centre in Renfrew on Feb. 28 for Shrove Tuesday. They read “If you give a pig a pancake,” did a pancake craft and learned about flapjacks. Did you know the world’s biggest pancake measured 15 metres in diameter and weighed three tonnes? Renfrew chamber opens award nominations TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com
They are the best of the best. That’s right, it’s time to recognize and honour those in our community who are outstanding and go the extra mile: from businesses to community groups, youth and the citizen of the year. The Renfrew and Area Chamber of Commerce has recently opened the nominations for its annual awards ceremony, which is set this year for June 1 at the Ma-Te-Way Activity Centre. The theme is a casino night and all the details are currently being worked out. This year the chamber has announced a few new awards and has made some changes to some of the traditional awards. Gail Laird, manager at the Renfrew and Area Chamber of Commerce, says the awards have been going on for decades, with the citizen of the year award dating back to 1976. Laird says the awards are a chance to give members of the community the recognition that is due. “It’s to make our community aware of the outstanding things they do,” said Laird. “The businesses, organizations and individuals all go above and beyond to help promote this area and they are just outstanding, it really puts us on the map.” She encourages people to get their
nominations in before the deadline of April 28 at 3 p.m. The nomination forms are now available online and at the chamber office and can be dropped off at the office or emailed in. “They should get them in and help support the community,” said Laird. This year the chamber is seeking nominations for the following awards: Citizen of the Year, Community Champion of the Year, Outstanding Business Achievement Award, Industry of the Year, New Business Award, Agri-Business of the Year and Young Person of the Year. The chamber will also be handing out some other awards but do not seek nominations for them, including: Chamber Member of the Year, BIA Member of the Year, President’s Award and Honorary Award. New awards The chamber has added the industry award to the list of honours handed out. “We wanted to make sure we included all sectors of businesses in our community,” said Laird. They have also added the ArgiBusiness of the Year, as the chamber encompasses not just Renfrew but Horton, Admaston/Bromley and Greater Madawaska townships. “(Agriculture) is a big part of our community,” said Laird. “In those areas, they have a lot of agriculture and we wanted to include everybody.”
Last year they handed out an award for Youth of the Year and this year it is the Young Person of the Year. “We just changed the wording. It will include a young member of the community, under 25,” said Laird. “There are a lot of young people who are great advocates for our community.” They also changed the wording for community organization of the year. “Now that it is Champion of the Year, it opens it up to a group, charity or an individual,” said Laird. In celebration of Canada’s sesquicentennial, the chamber is recognizing long standing businesses in our community and is seeking names of businesses who have been in the community for 20, 30, 40, 50, 75 or 100 years plus. “We are going to be recognizing these businesses,” said Laird. “Going forward, we will continue to recognize those businesses who have reached those milestones. All these businesses have been here a long time and have helped our community grow.” Nomination forms (with full descriptions of all awards) can be found on the chamber’s website: http://www. renfrewareachamber.ca/documents/ NominationForm.pdf or at the office at 161 Raglan St. S. For more information, call or email the chamber: 613-432-7015 or email: info@renfrewareachamber.ca.

Douglas prepares for St. Patrick’s Day celebrations TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com
The luck of the Irish will soon descend on Douglas. The biggest St. Patrick’s Day party in the Ottawa Valley, some say Canada, is just around the corner. The cornerstone of the activities is the St. Patrick Parade sponsored by the Douglas Lions Club. This year it’s set for a Saturday and a 1 p.m. start. “Douglas has always been the place to be for St. Patrick’s, we don’t do just one day, it’s the whole week,” said Billy McHale, one of the event organizers. “It’s the best party in Canada.” The festivities get underway on Saturday, March 11 with a breakfast at Zion United Church Hall from 7 to 10 a.m. The parade lines up from 8 a.m. to noon and the opening ceremony is set for noon at St. Michael’s Catholic School, 5346 Highway 60, with the parade starting at 1 p.m. sharp. “The big thing is the parade,” said McHale. “We are shooting for 150 floats in the parade. It’s a big undertaking but I think we are capable, we are at 107 right now and the hoofers and walkers are not counted. McHale says there will be a special guest on hand to sing O’ Canada and they will unveil the honourary St. Patrick and parade marshal. He expects there will be 3,000 people in the village for the parade. The parade is normally held on a Friday night but organizers decided to hold it during the day because of their goal of 150 floats. Last year they had 70 floats.
“Hopefully in daylight it is easier to maintain the traffic,” said McHale. “It gives people that extra time throughout the day and it’s easier to get to.” Registration is still open and for more information on getting a float in the big parade contact McHale 613-649-2598, Preston Cull 613-649-2378, Art Jamieson 613-582-3850 or Robert Enright robertenright12@gmail. com. McHale calls the celebration a homecoming with many people coming home bringing their friends to experience what Douglas has to offer for St. Patrick’s Day. “There’s always just smiles in Douglas, all the generations are involved,” said McHale. “It’s such a family affair, lads bring their grandfathers out for a beer.” He stresses the entertainment is local and they know the songs and music everyone wants to hear. The family tradition continues with Family Day at the Douglas Tavern, 5240 Queen St., from 2 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, March 12. “We have a very talented group of young performers,” said McHale. A couple of years ago they had 21 fiddlers and 72 step dancers during the family show. “There is no set show, whoever wants to play just plays,” said McHale. “The kids love it.” McHale says for the week-long celebrations they are trying to get all of the different committees in Douglas involved. On Monday, March 13 there is an Irish Stew and Historical Night at St. Michael’s School hosted by the Catholic Women’s
League. The supper will run from 5 to 7 p.m. for advance tickets call 613-649-2312. Jim Beattie will make the historical presentation, which will feature a slide show from Ireland and a history of popular Irish songs. “It’s an amazing musical tour of Ireland,” said McHale. On Tuesday, March 14 there will be an Irish Trivia Night at the Douglas Tavern starting at 7 p.m. To register contact 613649-2226 and all proceeds will go to the Admaston/Bromley Library. “Its very light and fun, some Irish songs/names and some general trivia,” said McHale. The six-hand euchre tournament will be on Wednesday, March 15 at the Douglas Tavern at 7 p.m. “You can’t have an Irish week without sixhand euchre,” said McHale. Register your team, limited space call Jamieson, Cull or McHale; all proceeds go to the Renfrew Hospice. On Thursday, March 16 is a special treat at the tavern as it’s Wing and Pub Night with wings by Billy T. “We never get to have wings in Douglas!” said McHale. On St. Patrick’s Day, March 17 there will be Irish music all day long at the Douglas Tavern. “March 17 is always the biggest day in Douglas,” said McHale. “There is no where else to be, the biggest party is always in Douglas.” There will be music by The Ryan’s from Pakenham, Jim Beattie, Kyle Felhaver as well as Fridge Full of Empties and Bang on the Ear.

Renfrew dentist off to Peru to provide dental services to those in need TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com
Renfrew dentist and Arnprior resident Dr. Janice King knows how lucky she is to live in Canada and wants to give back to those in need in Peru. King will mark 25 years as a dentist in June and 21 years at her Renfrew office at 7 Argyle St. in May and is off to South America to provide dental services to those who do not have access to them. This is her third trip with Edmonton-based Kindness in Action. She has also gone to a different part of Peru in 2011 and Nicaragua in 2013. “I just think we are very lucky with what we have access to in Canada,” said King. “I think it’s important that we give back to others in need. I’m lucky and I can afford to do it.” Kindness in Action’s mission is to provide dental health services, doing as much as we can with what we have; to honour, support and empower those with less and assist them in becoming self-sufficient; and to educate and raise awareness of developing world issues. Dr. Amil Shapka founded Kindness in Action more than 25 years ago and says it is really a transformational experience that brings you out of your comfort zone. “The fact that she is going for a

Renfrew dentist and Arnprior resident Dr. Janice King is going on her third trip with the organization Kindness in Action. Here she is pictured with a young patient on one of her previous trips. third time says it all, she is going to work in tough conditions, shes volunteering and taking time out of her busy practice,” said Shapka. “It’s a gift that she is going, it’s very unselfish and speaks to the quality of her heart.” She is really proud of the work they
do there, especially the quality. “The nice thing with this group is the quality of work is the same you would have here,” said King. “It’s providing access to people who would not have access to dental care and prevention.”
She leaves on April 1 and arrives in the Sacred Valley in Peru’s Andean highlands on April 2. The group is comprised of 22 volunteers, seven dentists (as far as King knows, she is the only dentist from Ontario), three dental students and three hygienists. The group will set up their base on April 2 and they will be volunteering their dental services from April 3 to 7. While there they will be doing mostly fillings, extractions and education on oral health. “Education is a big part of it,” said King. “So ideally you’re doing fillings next time and not just taking teeth out.” She recalls seeing many kids who could not eat because their teeth were rotting and after they receive treatment at a free clinic they are able to go ahead and eat again. “The people who are coming to the clinic, many would not have seen a dentist before, or if they did, it was at one of these clinics because they go once a year,” said King. King’s daughter Cassie, who is a Grade 12 student at Arnprior and District High School and also wants to be a dentist, will be volunteering on the trip as well. When they are finished, they will also be going on a four-day trek at Machu Picchu. On previous trips, King has also
been able to take her other children and recounts a story when her son gave a teacher a backpack of supplies and she didn’t realize it was for all the students to keep. “She was crying because every student had not had a pencil before,” said King. “I wish all my kids could come this time, they have all gone before.” According to Kindness in Action, 500 people are helped during every project. “They are just so thankful for the work that you do,” said King. “It’s a free clinic and the people will be lined up.” She packs her luggage and also brings some extra toothbrushes and things. “They speak Spanish and I don’t speak a lot, so it’s nice to give them something after they may have been scared. I leave what I can,” said King. She wanted to let the community know she is going on the trip because in the past when she has gone people have wanted to donate items for those in need. She suggests anyone who would like to help should drop off items (small toys, school supplies, colouring books, small soaps, etc.) to her office by March. 24. “It’s a great community I live and work in,” said King on the support she has received. “I’ve been here more than 20 years and it’s a great place for sure.”

Praying for others
The Ecumenical World Day of Prayer Service was held at Trinity-St. Andrew’s United Church in Renfrew on Friday, March 3. This year’s theme is ‘Am I Being Unfair to You,’ centred around the women of the Philippines. The service is hosted each year by a different local church; Trinity-St. Andrew’s Rev. Russell Wardell welcomed the large crowd saying they theme fit well with their church as they were exploring exchanges with Philippines. A number of different church representatives got up and shared stories of life as a woman living in the Philippines.
Two new deputy wardens
At the February session of County Council, Coun. Kim Love from Madawaska Valley Township and Coun. Janice Visneskie Moore from Killaloe, Hagarty and Richards Township were appointed as Deputy Wardens to assist Warden Jennifer Murphy with regards to attending Canada 150 Events and celebrations throughout the County this year. “These appointments will help ensure that we are able to attend as many events as possible across the county,” said Murphy. In 2016, County Council amended their procedural bylaw to create the Deputy Warden’s position. That position was fulfilled by Moore for a few months, and she attended a few events on behalf of the Warden Peter Emon. Moore who was Warden of the County in 2007 and 2008 and served on council since 1988. She is pleased with the opportunity to represent the current Warden at events this year. Renfrew County and District Renfrew OPP respond to wayward fireworks Health issues fentanyl warning After a number of incidents in the City of Ottawa, the Renfrew County and District Health Unit has issued an alert on fentanyl. Fentanyl is an opioid that is much more toxic than most other opioids. Opioids include drugs like heroin, morphine, fentanyl, methadone and codeine. Fentanyl is usually prescribed in patch form as a painkiller. It is around 50 to 100 times more toxic than morphine. This makes the risk of accidental overdose much higher. Fentanyl is also being made illegally and sold illegally. This illicit fentanyl is often made as a powder and mixed with drugs like cocaine, crack, heroin, marijuana and others. It is also being pressed into pills and sold as things like oxycodone (OxyContin, Fake Oxys, Faded 80s) and Percocet or other pills including speed and ecstasy/MDMA. What is the risk with fentanyl? When fentanyl is mixed with other opioids, alcohol, benzodiazepines, or stimulants like cocaine, it increases the risk of accidental overdose. There is no easy way to know if fentanyl is in a drug. You can’t see it, smell it or taste it. Any drug can be mixed with fentanyl. Even a very small amount can cause overdose. What are the signs of an overdose? Someone having an overdose from pain medications such as fentanyl will
have one or more of the following signs: • The person is unresponsive or doesn’t wake easily; • They are breathing very slowly or not at all; • Their lips and fingernails turn blue; • Their skin is cold and clammy; • Their body is limp; • They are making snoring or gurgling sounds; • They are throwing up or choking. What can you do if someone is overdosing? • Call 911; • Administer naloxone (if available); • Stay with the person. What is naloxone? Naloxone is a drug that can temporarily reverse the effects of an opioid overdose and allows time for the individual to be taken to a hospital to receive immediate life-saving medical treatment. It is available free of charge in Renfrew County at Renfrew County and District Health Unit, Ontario Addiction Treatment Centre, and participating pharmacies. An overdose is a medical emergency. Anyone that suspects or witnesses an overdose should call 9-1-1, even if naloxone has been administered. For more information, you can also visit www.rcdhu.com or call the Renfrew County and District Health Unit Health Info Line at 1-800-267-1097 Ext. 666 to speak with a nurse.
The Renfrew detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) issued a warning after explosions were getting too close to home. On March 2, at approximately 10:45 p.m. officers investigated a report of someone shooting fireworks from a moving vehicle towards homes in Renfrew. A suspect was identified and warned. Arson The investigation is continuing into a barn fire on Saturday, March 4, at 4:45 p.m. on Mount Road in the Township of Greater Madawaska. The barn contained hay and farm equipment and was completely destroyed. Police charged one 14-year-old male with Arson damage to property. He will not be identified under provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act. There is another suspect and Const. Dave Peace is investigating. Impaired driver On Friday, March 3, OPP officers investigated a single motor vehicle collision on South McNaughton Road in Admaston/Bromley Township that resulted in one person being charged with impaired driving. At approximately 11:22 p.m. a report was received about a pick-up truck having struck a hydro pole. When officers arrived they discovered the female driver of the truck had been drinking. She failed a roadside alcohol-screening test

and was arrested. Further breath tests were conducted at the OPP detachment. As a result of the investigation a 27-year-old female of Greater Madawaska Township was charged with impaired driving and driving over 80mgs. She was released on a promise to appear in court in Renfrew on April 5. Const. Patrick O’Connor led the investigation. On Saturday, March 4, at approximately 9:45 p.m. OPP officers responded to a report of a suspected impaired driver in Arnprior. When police attended the Sullivan Crescent address they located a female in the driver’s seat of a vehicle, which was running. After failing a roadside alcohol-screening test she was arrested for care or control of a motor vehicle while over 80mgs. At the conclusion of the investigation a 53 year-old female of Arnprior was charged with care or control of a motor vehicle while over 80mgs. She was released on a promise to appear in court in Renfrew on April 5. Const. Tamara Dube led the investigation. Fraud One person in Renfrew was a victim of the grandparent scam last week. The victim was contacted by someone claiming to be a lawyer who needed cash to get their grandchild out of jail. The initial fraud attempt was stopped by the
money transfer company when they suspected it was a fraud. The victim was contacted a second time and told to tell the money transfer company the funds were for maintenance and repairs. If you are contacted in a similar fashion, speak to a family member or the police prior to sending funds. One person in Renfrew fell victim to a fake ad online selling dogs. The victim e-transferred funds to purchase two dogs. When they attended the agreed upon location to pick up the animals no seller arrived. Many online sites warn against paying in advance for items. Meet sellers in public places and don’t pay for anything without seeing the merchandise. Police are investigating after two cheques were returned to a landlord marked NSF. It is an offence to knowingly pass a cheque with no funds in the bank to honour the cheque. There is a suspect and the investigation is continuing. Stats The OPP investigated calls 237 for service during the past week. Renfrew and Arnprior OPP officers attended nine domestic dispute calls during the past week. One male was charged with four counts of assault, overcoming resistance by choking and failing to comply with a probation order. No other criminal offences took place.

OPINION
Connected to your community
Drug crisis hits close to home Curiosity and risk-taking are a normal part of the teen and young adult years, and for some people opioids seem to be the drugs of choice. The recent death of a Kanata teen by opioid use has brought this issue closer to home. Renfrew County and District Health Unit has issued an alert about fentanyl and parents, caregivers and school officials should arm themselves with information about what to look for and how and where to seek help. Prescription opioids include medication like morphine, percocet and fentanyl. Getting drugs from a drug dealer, ordered online or from a friend is very risky and potentially life threatening. Prescription fentanyl is a pain medication that comes in a patch or liquid and is manufactured under strict guidelines and controlled environment. Opioids are a depressant drug, which means that they slow down the part of the brain that controls breathing. Overdose of opioids can result in death because breathing stops. All opioid drugs can be dangerous and need to be taken as prescribed by a medical professional. Illicit fentanyl has been confirmed in a variety of both fake prescription pills, as well as other street drugs such as cocaine, crystal meth, heroin and marijuana. Illicit fentanyl is known to be deadly in small amounts such as the size of a grain of salt, making the risk of overdosing extremely high. Prescription fentanyl is about 100 times more toxic than morphine, but illicit fentanyl may be as high as 10,000 times more toxic than morphine, so you never really know what you’re getting. Fentanyl is being sold on the street under such names as “Faded ‘80s,” “Greenies,” or “Green Monsters,” According to the Renfrew Health Unit: Naloxone is a drug that can temporarily reverse the effects of an opioid overdose and allows time for the individual to be taken to a hospital to receive immediate life-saving medical treatment.
Latest Liberal tax grab related to homes To the Editor:
Re: Taxation of Primary Residence Cheryl Gallant. To date, when you sell your (primary residence) home, the sale has been exempted from tax. Recently in Question Period the federal minister of finance stated that there are “ex-
ceptions to the exceptions,” i.e. if you work from home you could now be considered as an “exemption to the exemption.” This is Prime Minister Trudeau’s latest tax grab and will require submission of details of area from which you conduct your homebased business. Funnily enough, all though this issue was debated in the House for two days in a row, it was not mentioned by the
mainstream media either for or against. It is vitally important that this tax information be made known to as many homeowners as possible. The community newspaper is a good place to begin even though in many instances it can be strongly biased. Sunny days indeed. For whom? Christina Edgar Renfrew
Another successful sale for the RCIS RALY class To the Editor:
Where’s the best place to buy jewelry in town? Well, last week the answer to that question was Renfrew Collegiate Institute (RCI). On Thursday and Friday, Feb. 9 and 10, RCI’s RALY class had another jewelry sale fundraiser.
The sale occurred over both the RCIS and RCI lunches. Included in the sale were a wide variety of rings, earrings, necklaces and bracelets. Some of the stones used in the jewelry were rose quartz, agate, tiger’s eye. A selection of earrings were actually handmade by the students.

Residential hydro bills increased once monthly bills began To the Editor:
Once again prices are going up, Renfrew Hydro has changed billing to one month instead of two. They said it is to make it easier for the consumer, that is a load of BS. The only reason they changed it is so they can make more money off the consumer. My bill used to be around $535 every two months now it is $334 for one month. That is an increase of $200 for two

This Otter is preparing to create a scent mark, perhaps to warn others of its territory or to advertise its readiness to mate.
Michael Runtz
Seals are in your neighbourhood The word “seal” likely conjures up images of a large, dark blobs bobbing in the ocean or slung across barnacle-encrusted rocks. While seals fit that bill, one local animal has looks and behaves very much like a seal. While not true seals, otters belong to the same group of predatory animals (the carnivores), and are distant cousins to seals. Two otter species live in North America: the sea otter, which inhabits Pacific coastal waters; and the river otter, which occupies freshwater habitats across much of North America (but also occurs along coastal shores). River otters are regularly seen in local waterways but are often viewed only for brief periods for they travel a lot, especially in winter; male otters have been known to occupy territories as large as 200 km2! Otters are weasels (mustelids) and so are related to fisher, marten, mink, and other species in that group. They are the most aquatic weasels, and while mink also swim, that species spends much time along shores, rarely venturing far from them. Otters, however, are true masters of the water, crossing large lakes and travelling big rivers. They are wonderful swimmers, owning short legs and large, webbed feet. Their tail, which comprises a third of their total body length, is distally flattened from side to side to serve as a rudder and provide bursts of speed. Otters can’t float (they constantly tread water) but can stay submerged for up to four minutes, which is why they seldom remain at the surface for long. Sensory whiskers called vibrissae adorn the face and help them navigate underwater, especially in dark and murky conditions.
Fish are a main food but crayfish, frogs, snakes, and even bird eggs are also eaten. I once watched an otter on the ice eating tiny painted turtles that had been lying dormant on the bottom of the pond. The sound of its large canines cracking through the turtles’ armour was unforgettable. Like many carnivores, river otters have an unusual reproductive cycle. Females mate in late winter and give birth the following year just before becoming receptive again. While their pregnancy might seem to last a year, the attachment of the embryonic blastocyst to the uterus wall occurs only about a month before birth occurs. This unusual system called delayed implantation allows otters and other carnivores to mate at a time favourable to them, and give birth in a suitable time of year. Now is an excellent time for viewing otters. They frequently appear on the ice at the edge of open water to dine or roll around to clean their fur. Otter fur is particularly dense: nearly 58,000 hairs per cm2 adorn the back. This density keeps water from reaching the skin, essential when swimming in ice-cold water. Currently, otters are creating “scent posts” on top of the ice. Piles of droppings adorned with scents released by a pair of anal glands mark territories and announce amorous desire. Mating is seemingly a violent affair, with the male grabbing the female by the neck with his teeth, and the pair rolling around for extended periods. If you’ve never seen an otter, you “ought-er” soon head down to a local waterway before the ice is gone for good. The Nature contact is mruntz@start.ca

They wanted to close the doors quietly, but their loyal supporters would not let them. The Renfrew Tea Room officially closed on Feb. 28 as co-owners and sisters Janice Eady and Susan Sommerville are set to retire. Semi-retire, that is; the pair will still be doing some catering but plan to spend more time with their family. “We are very sad but happy too,” said Sommerville. “We want to thank everyone for their support over the years.” They both admit they will miss interacting with the people on a daily basis. “It’s bittersweet,” added Eady. “I’ll miss seeing my sister everyday.” The pair has owned the shop for 13 years but it has been functioning as a café for more than 30 years. The building itself was once the original Renfrew Town Hall and dates back to 1893. The town purchased the building at 128 Raglan St. in 1910 and it was the town hall until 1984. Sommerville explains their purchase of the business came after sharing a meal there with her sister. “We came into lunch one day and Janice said we could do this, and I said no,” said Sommerville. “All of a sudden it fell into our laps,

“They’ve been such big supporters of the Renfrew Art Guild,” said Diana Wakely. “Everyone could put their work in. Thank you for a great job. We will miss you on the main street.” The Tea Room sold more than 300 paintings over the years and never took a commission for the sale.
“The artists found there were few places to exhibit art and have it appreciated, and the Tea Room was one of those places,” said Wakely. For Sommerville and Eady, they too enjoyed the artwork. “What it boils down to is we needed something on the walls,” said Sommerville. “Pam Cunningham asked if she could put something on the walls and it went from there. We have enjoyed a lot of paintings over the years and never took them for granted.” Judy Ewart, executive director of Renfrew Home Support, was also on hand as the business was closing up. “They have hosted fundraisers and we were the recipients of their anniversary events,” said Ewart.” They have been awesome and we really appreciate all they have done.” As to why they supported that particular cause over the years: “It was our charity that we took on, our mom started volunteering there and we continued on,” said Eady. Sommerville had a little fun with her reasoning. “It was feathering our own nest.” They still have a few items left that will be up for sale on March 18 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. “The bits and bobs, whatever is left,” said Sommerville. “Cups, saucers, china.” For catering information, call Eady at 613-432-6769 or Sommerville at 613-432-9507.

Renfrew students make a difference in the Dominican Republic TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com
It was an experience seven local high school students won’t soon forget. The Grade 11 students from St. Joseph’s Catholic High School and teacher Jodi MacDonald participated in the Dominican Republic Experience with Bishops High School students Feb. 4 to 11. For Jaymie Barnabe the trip meant a lot. “I learned the meaning of faith, hope and love and that you can be happy without materialistic items,” said Barnabe. “Love comes free, it’s so easy to connect even though there was a huge language barrier.” “This trip taught me to be thankful for what I have and to be more in touch with God,” added Avery Jones. The students fundraised to make physician travel packs and friendship kits for those less fortunate, bringing along
27 hockey bags to a free clinic and supplies to their sister school Brigado Nolasco. “We delivered them to those families who were sick and in need,” said Barnabe. “(At the school) they performed cultural dances and sang songs for us.” They also received two truckloads of supplies from the Renfrew Victoria Hospital. The students helped paint a house there, which is a sign of belonging to the community. They were also able to go on a tour of Santo Domingo where they saw the first cathedral in North America, the Christopher Columbus statue and were able to spend time at a beach. The students who went on the trip included Barnabe, Jones, Meredith Johnston, Sydney Perry, Cassie Campbell, Jo’lyn Dagenais and Cassidy Murray. “They represented St. Joe’s so well,” said MacDonald who was visiting the area with the school trip for the second time.

She was able to see a family who she met last year. “Martia, who has six kids and is pregnant with her seventh, she recognized me from last year,” said MacDonald. “It was amazing to deliver a kit to her and see the difference in her life; now she has a concrete floor. It was a joyful to see the improvements in her life.” For Jones, the trip really changed her perspective on things, especially when they were visiting one of the poor areas. “It changed the way I think about what I have, they have nothing and welcomed us in,” said Jones. Barnabe admits she has a number of memorable moments from the trip. “We were able to interact with the families and they were so grateful,” said Barnabe. “I said God bless you always in Spanish and the one woman just started crying.”

Tyler Baker checks for “scoring” in the barrel of a used gun. Metal scrapings could throw off the trajectory of a bullet, according to his friend Hunter Wright. The Renfrew Gun and Hunting Show saw a good turnout last weekend. The Richmond Rod and Gun Show is set for April 8-9. BEHIND CLOSED DOORS: A SERIES ON INTIMATE PARTNER VIOLENCE IN RENFREW COUNTYF- 3 2 OF 3
Ending Violence Against Women (EVA)-Renfrew County is a committee that focuses on prevention, education, systemic change, and service provision related to violence against women. More than half of all women in Canada have experienced at least one incident of physical or sexual violence since the age of 16. Approximately every 6 days, a woman in Canada is killed by her intimate partner. On any given night in Canada, 3,200 women and their 3000 children sleep in shelters because it isn’t safe at home. Yet we often turn a blind eye to the violence next door, thinking it isn’t any of our business. When the public or media do pay attention to Intimate partner violence it is after the fact, when it is already too late to save someone from injury or even death. We must start making it our business. This 3 part series on intimate partner violence aims to increase understanding in our communities, with the hope of preventing harm and increasing support to our neighbours, friends and family members who are experiencing abuse. Follow us on Facebook @EVA-End Violence AgainstWomen-Renfrew County and If you wish to get involved do not hesitate to reach us at evarenfrewcounty@gmail.com.
How to help a friend who is being abused Here are some ways to help a friend who is being abused: • Set up a time to talk. Try to make sure you have privacy and won’t be distracted or interrupted. • Let your friend know you’re concerned about her safety. Be honest. Tell her about times when you were worried about her. Help her see that what she’s going through is not right. Let her know you want to help. • Be supportive. Listen to your friend. Keep in mind that it may be very hard for her to talk about the abuse. • Tell her that she is not alone, and that people want to help. • Offer specific help. You might say you are willing to just listen, to help her with childcare, or to provide transportation, for example. • Don’t place shame, blame, or guilt on your friend. Don’t say, « You just need to leave », Instead, say something like, « I get scared thinking about what might happen to you » ; Tell her you understand that hersituation is very difficult. • Help her make a safety plan. Safety planning includes picking a place to go and packing important items. • Encourage your friend to talk to someone who can help. Offer to help her find local resources. Offer to go with her to the resources, the police, or court. • If your friend decides to stay, continue to be supportive. Your friend may decide to stay in the relationship, or she may leave and then go back many times. It may be hard for you to understand, but people stay in abusive relationships for many reasons. Be supportive, no matter what your friend decides to do. • Encourage your friend to do things outside of the relationship. It's important for her to see friends and family. • If your friend decides to leave, continue to offer support. Even though the relationship was abusive, she may feel sad and lonely once it is over. She also may need help getting services from agencies or community groups. • Keep in mind that you can’t « rescue » your friend. She has to be the one to decide it’s time to get help. • Support her no matter what her decision. • Let your friend know that you will always be there no matter what Source : https://www.womenshealth.gov/violence-against- women 20 The Renfrew Mercury - Thursday, March 9, 2017
What are the main steps in the Domestic Violence Court process? 1. When police arrive at the scene of a problem between intimate partners, they must look at the situation and decide whether an assault probably happened, and who was the main aggressor, or attacker. If you talk to police, it is important to tell the truth. 2. In Ontario, if the police believe there is evidence that a person has assaulted their current or former intimate partner, police must lay a criminal charge, even if the person who was assaulted does not want them to. This is called a Mandatory Charging Policy. If the police believe that a woman has assaulted her partner, she may be charged. Sometimes, if it is not clear to the police who the main aggressor was, both partners may be charged. This is called dual charging. 3. If your abuser is arrested and charged, police may release the accused with conditions, or keep the accused in jail until a Bail hearing. At the Bail hearing, the Court will decide if the accused should be held in jail or allowed out into the community on bail, until the trial ends. Bail is the temporary release of the accused before trial. If the abuser is released into the community, there will be certain conditions they must follow. If the conditions of bail are not followed, the abuser may be re-arrested and ordered to stay in jail until trial. 4. After the abuser is charged, the Victim Witness Assistance Program V/WAP should contact you with referrals to community agencies for support. They also help prepare you for Court and work with Court Services to arrange for interpreters or other accommodation, if needed. THINGS MEN CAN DO
TO PREVENT
GENDER VIOLENCE gender violence as a MEN’S issue involving 1 Approach men of all ages and socioeconomic, racial and ethnic backgrounds. View men not only as perpetrators or possible offenders, but as empowered bystanders who can confront abusive peers. If a brother, friend, classmate, or teammate is abusing his female partner -- or is disrespectful or abusive to girls and women in general -- don’t look the other way. If you feel comfortable doing so, try to talk to him about it. Urge him to seek help. Or if you don’t know what to do, consult a friend, a parent, a professor, or a counselor. DON’T REMAIN SILENT.
2
Have the courage to look inward. Question your own attitudes. Don’t be defensive when something you do or say ends up hurting someone else. Try hard to understand how your own attitudes and actions might inadvertently perpetuate sexism and violence, and work toward changing them.
3
If you suspect that a woman close to you is being abused or has been sexually assaulted, gently ask if you can help.
4
If you are emotionally, psychologically, physically, or sexually abusive to women, or have been in the past, seek professional help NOW.
5
Be an ally to women who are working to end all forms of gender violence. Support the work of campus-based women’s centers. Attend “Take Back the Night” rallies and other public events. Raise money for community-based rape crisis centers and battered women’s shelters. If you belong to a team or fraternity, or another student group, organize a fundraiser.
6
Recognize and speak out against homophobia and gay-bashing. Discrimination and violence against lesbians and gays are wrong in and of themselves. This abuse also has direct links to sexism (e.g. the sexual orientation of men who speak out against sexism is often questioned, a conscious or unconscious strategy intended to silence them. This is a key reason few men do speak out).
7
Attend programs, take courses, watch films, and read articles and books about multicultural masculinities, gender inequality, and the root causes of gender violence. Educate yourself and others about how larger social forces affect the conflicts between individual men and women.
8
Don’t fund sexism. Refuse to purchase any magazine, rent any video, subscribe to any Web site, or buy any music that portrays girls or women in a sexually degrading or abusive manner. Protest sexism in the media.
9
Mentor and teach young boys about how to be men in ways that don’t involve degrading or abusing girls and women. Volunteer to work with gender violence prevention programs, including antisexist men’s programs. Lead by example.

I'm back and more or less intact, refreshed, recharged and ready for that final push to the end of the season. This is when the curling gets competitive, the players are sharp and the games mean more as playoffs approach. Those of you who are cheering my return (thanks Mom), I will continue to dazzle you with my amazing alliterations. For the mob that is booing, I will punish you with the same. And a special thanks to Marg Dawson who pinch hit splendidly and may be coerced to do so again in the future. On the last weekend in February, the curling club held its annual mixed championships, organized by Cedric Wright and his helpers. Eight teams of alternating men and lady players enjoyed some good curling, great food and the friendship that this event is known for. In opening round action, Brian Yolkowskie's crew sent the Bill Bowles' bunch to the B-side when Yolkowskie's last rock picked out Bowles' rock which was almost totally buried to win the game, while Donnie Lowe's last rock draw kissed a guard five feet in front of the house but still rolled in to defeat Cliff Valleau and Co. by one (people were calling it an Andy Sklepowicz shot, I call it the kiss of fate). Rob Warren's foursome defeated Leo McCallum's team and Don Rouble's rink outpointed Greg Savicky's squad. On the B-side, Valleau eliminated Bowles and Savicky sent McCallum to the sidelines. On Sunday, the team of Cliff Valleau, Anne Windle, Bernie Leclaire and Theresa Mann played well to claim the B championship over Savicky's side. In the A semis, Yolkowskie sent Rouble's quartet to the showers and Warren rode an opening four to a dismantling of Lowe's legion while Yolkowskie's crew dispatched Rouble's rebels despite Don's triple takeout to count one for the shot of the day. In the A final, the team of Rob Warren, Laurie Millar, Ron Townson and Anne MacNeil broke open a tight game by taking a big three in the fifth and then watching Yolkowskie's draw in the sixth come up short against four. Congratulations to this year's mixed club champions. And you might still be able to enter a team, or join one, for this weekend's Charlie Ricard Memorial St. Patty's Spiel, which is open to the community and always features great food, fun and curling.

CRAIG - In Memory of Robert (Bob) Craig who passed away March 4th 2014. God looked around his garden, And found an empty place. Then he looked down upon the earth, And saw your tired face. He put his arms around you, And lifted you to rest. God’s garden must be beautiful, He only takes the best. He knew that you were suffering, He knew that you were in pain. He knew that you would never, Get well on earth again. He saw the road was getting rough, And the hills were hard to climb. So he closed your eyes, And whispered please be mine. It broke our hearts to lose you Bob, But you didn’t go alone. For part of us went with you, The day God called you home. Love your sister Donna and Bill And the rest of the brothers and sisters.

Renfrew County Plowmen seek help in finding antique plows for match on Sept. 16 TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com
It will be a flurry of furrow action at the Renfrew County Plowing Match on Sept. 16. Organizers are gearing up for the big event in conjunction with Canada’s sesquicentennial. The Renfrew County Plowmen’s Association is seeking the public’s
PHONE
432-3655
help as they prepare for the match. To celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary, they are asking everyone with an antique tractor and plow to take part in the demonstration. “What we are doing is getting feelers out now. We are looking for participants, anyone who has an antique plow or tractor we want them to come out, there will be a demonstration and display,” said Albert Dunbar, head of the antique demonstration committee.
Dunbar says that plowing equipment has really changed over the years. “We want to demonstrate how it was,” said Dunbar. “There are fewer and fewer plowers because farmers don’t plow the same way. We want to see new equipment as well to see how it compares. This will be the 37th plowing match in Renfrew County and the association is also seeking volunteers to help
keep this tradition going. “Agriculture in Renfrew County goes back to the start of Canada — if you go back 150 years ago, they were plowing,” said Dunbar. The 2017 edition of the Renfrew County Plowing Match will be held Sept. 16 at Mel and Lynne Langton’s farm at 224 Sturgeon Mountain Rd. in Beachburg. For more information on antiques/demonstrating, contact 613-732-0522 or email adunbar@dun-

On Duty This Weekend VINCE JOHNSTON Real Estate Representative Cell: 433-2254 I welcome your weekend call on any listed property
God played big role in family’s life way back in the 1930s It wasn’t as if Emerson had done some dastardly deed like stealing money out of the sugar bowl, but what he did earned him a sound cuff on the ear from Mother. What he did was say, “God, I sure would like a real hockey stick, instead of the one Father made out of a piece of wood.” It wasn’t that wanting the hockey stick got him into trouble; it was saying “God” outside of praying. It was a sin to take God’s name in vain, and Mother wouldn’t tolerate it, and that’s all there was to it. Mother didn’t say a word. She didn’t have to. The cuff on the ear said it all. And yet, it seemed to me, as I watched Emerson take his punishment, that adults were forgiven for taking the Lord’s name in vain. Father never quite got the word God out. He would say, “by gad,” which to me was too close to the actual word for comfort. And as I sat and thought about all the ways God’s name was worked into everyday conversations, I had a very hard time figuring out what was right and what was wrong — and then there were the times when it seemed perfectly normal. Mother had a host of sayings all relating to God’s mercy, such as the time old Granny Hines died. Mother clutched her breast with her right hand, then made the sign of the cross, and in a solemn voice said, “God rest her weary soul.” I had a hard time figuring out how Granny’s soul was going to rest if she was already dead. God figured prominently in just about everything we did, I figured. And we never planned a trip into Renfrew without Mother saying, “God willing.” For the life of me, I couldn’t figure out why God would object to our going anywhere. And “if God favours” was another of Mother’s favourite expressions, or “if God allows,” as if there was some doubt in her mind as to where we would all be in a few days hence. Hardly a day went by that Mother didn’t say,
“Only God knows,” used when she couldn’t come up with a reason or something had been mislaid. But, what terrified me the most was when a neighbour came to visit who was said to be the biggest gossip in the county. She was an MARY COOK enormous woman, and when she was telling a story — usually one hard to believe — she would clutch her chest and say, “If that isn’t the truth, may God strike me dead.” Well, that sent chills right up my back. And I would pray silently that what she said was the gospel truth. I wasn’t as concerned about her expiring as I was about how we would get her out of the house. Certainly, no one could lift her. And I had visions of Father bringing the stoneboat up to the back door, and with the help of my three brothers, rolling her across the kitchen floor, and out the back door and onto the stoneboat. When I talked to my older and much wiser sister Audrey about the God issue, and asked why Mother called upon Him so often, she said it had everything to do with what she called an abiding faith. “Faith” I knew. “Abiding” was a new word for me, and I looked it up in my little red dictionary and found it meant enduring and lasting, and it was then I knew why Mother so often worked God’s name into whatever she was saying. It was simply because back then, when every day was a struggle to make ends meet, we certainly needed God to survive from one day to the next. Audrey said His mercy was enduring and lasting, and that made perfect sense to me. Back then, there wasn’t too much we could depend on. So, it wasn’t hard to understand why God was called upon so often. We needed all the help we could get.

CHANGE YOUR
Clocks & Batteries
DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME BEGINS SUNDAY, MARCH 12 AT 2AM
Before you go to bed on Saturday, March 11, be sure to set your clocks ahead an hour so it will be the correct time when you wake up. Most smart phones will make the change for you, but most people will have to manually change the clock in their car, on their microwave/stove or other wall clocks. This is also a great opportunity to change the batteries in your smoke detectors as you could save someone’s life – including your own!!

Ten tables up for bridge top ranking LEWIS MACDONALD
PLEASE, JOIN FOOD BANKS CANADA AND HELP FEED YOUR NEIGHBOURS TODAY
In the Chalk Talk preceding start of regular play, Carol Sulpher shared with enthusiasts a hand that bridge expert Larry Cohen demonstrated in a workshop she attended. The hand served as a valuable review of bridge fundamentals. In the course of her remarks, Carol repeated Cohen’s advice to never lead an ace unless backed up with the king. Cohen also reiterated the wisdom of the second hand playing low.
Ten tables of avid bridge players competed for top honours at Ma-Te-Way Activity Centre on March 1. Lady Luck seemed to favour the East-West direction as the afternoon’s seven successful small slams were made by East defenders. On Board 5, Ted Ambridge and Mike Nagrodski reeled in a six diamonds contract. On Board 25, Jeannie Yagminas and Mona Brydges Congratulations to the March 1 winners: smoked their opponents with a six spades effort. North — South Also on this board, Marcel Marsan and Dave 1. Ed McCann and Lew MacDonald Sulpher brought home a six diamonds contract. 2. Ernie Berndt and Eric Brown Then on Board 29, four small slams were made. 3. Phillippa Baran and Nancy Cavanagh The pairs of Sue Phillips/Lila Paddock and East — West George Caldwell/Suzanne Caldwell made six 1. Leanne Cheliak and Irene Churchill (69.5 spades and the pairs of Leanne Cheliak/Irene Churchill and Peter Phillips/Guy Vaillancourt per cent) 2. Sue Phillips and Lila Paddock scored twelve tricks at six no trump. Kudos to 3. Jeannie Yagminas and Mona Brydges all seven pairs.
