March 10, for a political fundraising email that outraged many in the military and the general public. The Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MP’s statement, in full, reads: “Earlier this week, a fundraising email in my name REGION REGION from my Electoral District Association raised attention. “I have spent my entire life and political career defending and advocating for the women and men of the Canadian Armed Forces, especially with Garrison Pet.CA awawa located in my.COMriding. “I included a photo of Corporal Cirillo as a way to honour him.”

The rate for a cool glass of water in Renfrew is rising slightly, but every time you flush your toilet is when you will feel the real increase. Renfrew Council has approved a two per cent increase in the water bills for 2016 and a six per cent increase for wastewater services. Mayor Don Eady congratulated everyone who helped prepare the figures, calling it a “good honest budget.” For the water service, residents See APOLOGY page 2 can expect the same rate-of-inflation raise each year until 2025. As for wastewater, the rate of increase is budgeted to slowly drop for the next few years until it levels out in 2023. “Using two per cent, that’s a full one-per-cent drop,” said Eady. “That one per cent is fairly major; TIFFANY LEPACK/METROLAND that’s basically the rate of inflation.” Coun. Entertainment at the Horton St. Patrick’s Day event was provided by Dai Bassett the ‘Welsh Guy with a Smile.’
The Township of Horton hosted a St.Patrick’s Day party a few days early on March 13 at the community centre. Part of the celebration included a special fourth birthday party with Alex Thompson, Violet (birthday girl), Hazel and August Barron and Jack and Caleb Kelly.

“In my view, and that of many others, he is a Canadian hero who should not be forgotten and whose memory should be celebrated. However, given the email was a fundraising request, I should not have included that photo. I apologize for doing so. “Funds already raised through this email appeal will be presented to the Stand on Guard Fund for the families of Corporal Nathan Cirillo and Warrant Office Patrice Vincent.” Gallant’s fundraising email with the subject line ‘Terrorists in our midst’ was sent on March 2. It contained a photo of an unnamed Cirillo, the War Memorial sentry killed by a lone gunman in 2014. The email continues to anger many on social media websites and the story keeps growing as newspapers and broadcasters across the country produce articles about it. Beyond the Cirillo aspect, there have been accusations of racism for linking immigrants and refugees with terrorists. Gallant attempted to quash the backlash with a March 4 statement from her Electoral District Association (EDA) president that reads, in full: “Thank you to all who responded to our letter: loyalty is what makes good citizens. “Cheryl and I are pleased to let you know that a donation will be made to the Stand on Guard Fund in support of the families of Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent and Corporal Nathan Cirillo. “Sincerely, Chris Brown, EDA president, Cheryl Gallant, MP Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke.” Days before the apology statement, Interim Conservative Leader Rona Ambrose said that Gallant “has taken that back and apologized for it.”

Water rates less than neighbouring municipalities: Sidney Continued from page 1
“At the end of the day Renfrew is doing probably the best way that’s the most economical for all of the residents of Renfrew. The one thing that is really important to note on the water rates is we have to recoup our revenue from water alone. It can’t be any other method, water in water out,” explained Sidney. “I want the citizens of Renfrew to know that it was researched extensively on other alternatives and this is the best way we can do this. When other municipalities come out
(with their rates) you will see we are way under what other municipalities are going to have to face this year.” Eady thanked the task force for the work it has put in over the last year, including staff and public meetings, plant tours and more. “I think we have done some really good due diligence there,” said Eady. The town has also entered into a 10-year agreement with Ontario Clean Water Agency, which runs the water and wastewater plants. “This will provide the town
with stability and predictability in one of the major expense categories; having that in place is huge,” said Eady. Coun. Kate Windle researched how Renfrew compares to the rest of the province and says Renfrew’s price is one of the best in Ontario. “We are way ahead of the game,” said Windle. “I think it is a real selling feature for our community.” She said that when she ran for council water and wastewater was her number-one most important passion. “It seems that it still is be-
cause we have the best water,” said Windle. “We are all drinking water out of the glass that came from the tap and it is excellent.” INCREASES
A household that currently uses five cubic meters of water per month will see an increase of $29 per year. Someone who uses 15 cubic meters per month will face a boost of $52 per year and a family that has 25 cubic meters of water usage a month will see an increase of $75 per year.

Chamber optimistic as it deals with challenges of change John Carter
john.carter@metroland.com
The Renfrew and Area Chamber of Commerce had a challenging but “good” year in 2015 and 2016 is “looking great,” says president Kent Tubman. In his president’s address at the group’s annual meeting March 9 at the Rocky Mountain House, Tubman noted that the chamber that was founded in 1901 plays just as vital a role in the community today as it did then. And it “wrestled with change then as it does now,” he added. Tubman reported that last year the chamber’s membership stabilized and communication with members was strong through regular newsletters and its Facebook, Twitter and Internet sites. He noted that 2015 was also a “good event” year with the conversion of the annual awards celebration to a wine and cheese reception and the holding the Taste of the Valley on the same day as the Car Show for Dad both drawing “rave reviews.” Other successful chamber-related events included the Renfrew and Area Home Show, a Business after Hours at Valley Food & Drink in Calabogie and the networking breakfast/AGM, he added. Tubman said the chamber is looking forward to an expanded home show with many more exhibitors April 22-23 at the Ma-TeWay Activity Centre and more Business After Hours events.
With the annual Community Awards Celebration set for June 2 at the Ma-Te-Way Activity Centre, the chamber is seeking nominations until the April 28 deadline from members and the community for the awards. The categories are citizen of the year, community organization of the year, lifetime business achievement award, outstanding business achievement award, skilled trade employer of the year, best new small business of the year and youth of the year. Award criteria and nomination forms are available at the chamber office at 161 Raglan St. and online at www.renfrewareachamber. ca. At the annual meeting, Tubman (Tubman Marketing) was elected to another term as chamber president. Also back is treasurer Mel Blimkie (A Sense of Country), who reported the chamber ended the year with a small surplus. New directors successfully recommended by the nomination committee of Tubman, Kevin Bossy, Diane McKinnon and Scott Murdoch include Lauren Scott (Renfrew Chiropractic and Rehabilitation Centre), Jean Hughes (MyFM), Kelley Lemenchick (Community Futures), Scott Wilson (BMO) and Wayne Fraser (Greater Madawaska). Returning directors include Byron Hermann (Valley Food and Drink Co.), Dave Lemkay (Renfrew Industrial Commission), Amy Rule (Rocky Mountain House), Mike Coulas (Renfrew), Bob Johnson (Horton) and Bob Hall (Admaston-Bromley).
JOHN CARTER/METROLAND
At the end of the Renfrew and Area Chamber of Commerce annual meeting, president Kent Tubman and treasurer Mel Blimkie, in front, get together with directors, from left, Mike Coulas, Jean Hughes, Amy Rule, Bob Hall, chamber manager Gail Laird, Byron Hermann, Lauren Scott, Kelley Lemenchick and Dave Lemkay. Missing are Scott Wilson, Wayne Fraser and Bob Johnson.

Water quality group strives to find a locally made solution tlepack@metroland.com
Stakeholders are looking for a made-in-RenfrewCounty model to deal with concerns surrounding water quality in the area. On March 3 Gerry Richards and Lynn Clelland from the Renfrew County Agricultural Water Quality Leadership Group discussed its future plans with Admaston-Bromley council. They informed councillors they were set to make the same presentation to the County of Renfrew’s property and development committee on March 8. The pair felt it was important for council to be aware of the group’s plans as their requests move through the county’s planning process. Richards explained they had a clear message to the county. “To request that the County of Renfrew take on a leadership role on water quality improvements in our watersheds,” he said. Clelland explained the group was formed in 2014 after a number of farmers and agriculture groups had a strong sense the agriculture community needed to be more engaged in dealing with water quality issues in the county. “To be honest it started to evolve after the Muskrat Watershed Council was making progress and making some momentum,” said Clelland. Six different groups came together and they were able to obtain federal funding to conduct a study titled ‘Water Quality in Renfrew County: How Can Agriculture Play a Role?’ prepared by Intersol in May 2015. Coun. Mike Quilty called the study the most informative one he has read since becoming a councillor and said would keep it for a reference. “It’s great that you are challenging the county to put this together,” said Quilty. “I think the county should take ownership with this.” Mayor Michael Donohue says he sees the times are changing. “There is a growing culture amongst agriculture of embracing the new concepts … At one time there seemed resistance to this new model of agriculture; it is being embraced more and more openly as there is a renewal for those who are taking up agriculture,” he said. “That is getting a groundswell to challenge how things have always been done.” Two of key recommendations from the study are to consider different models and choose a direction through collective action and to engage other key players in Renfrew County to build momentum towards action.
Easter Bunny to visit Renfrew early The Easter bunny is coming to Renfrew a week early to meet with children. The Renfrew Children’s Centre has arranged to have the Easter Bunny available this weekend for photographs. Families can drop by the centre on Saturday, March 19 or Sunday, March 20 from 1-2 p.m. each day, and take photographs of their youngsters with the Easter Bunny. The centre is located at 850 O’Brien Rd. (Wilson Mall). Use the side entrance behind Campbell Monuments. For more information or to register, call 613-4329998.
“We want a made-in-Renfrew-County model for co-ordinating, managing and promoting water quality improvements within our watersheds. We don’t want a conservation authority,” said Clelland. “People see conservation authority as a negative thing rather than a positive. They certainly have positive things, but there is an impression of negativity when it comes to them.” After the Renfrew County Stewardship Forum Towards Watershed Planning held in November 2015, an interim steering group called Renfrew County Water Quality Association was formed in February. The newly formed group is recommending the counTIFFANY LEPACK/METROLAND ty consult with it and other stakeholders for the purGerry Richards and Lynn Clelland from the Renfrew County Agricultur- pose of reviewing the county-wide watershed manageal Water Quality Leadership Group address the Township of Admaston/ ment options and recommending a model that would be most suitable in Renfrew County. The Renfrew Gun and Hunting Show March 5-6 at the Renfrew Armouries drew scores of hunting and shooting enthusiasts. The event raised funds for the West Carleton Wolverines Football Club. Don Martin, a retired member of the Havelock/Belmont/Methuen fire and rescue unit, sits at his booth with a pigeon grade Winchester Model 12. A story in the Mercury March 3 indicated the Valley Fishing and Outdoor Show will be held in Carp again next month. But organizers have decided to move the show to the Richmond Arena this year. And it will held April 9-10, not April 2-3. Sherry Haaima/Metroland

Peppys Charge it Up (‘Mac’) was shot on Oct. 31. The shooter was fined $2,000 and must pay the owner $7,000 after mistaking it for a black bear. The owner contacted the MNRF and conservation officers from the Pembroke office attended to investigate. They determined that Pierce had illegally killed the horse. In addition to the fines, Pierce paid $7,000 in restitution to the owner of the horse, prior to the hearing in court. The case was heard by Justice of the Peace Nancy Mitchell. A area man charged in the shooting of a horse in the Springtown area last fall has been fined $2,000 and has paid the animal’s owner $7,000. Malcolm Pierce was charged after OPP and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) investigated when the horse went missing Nov. 1 and was found shot dead and partially hidden more than a month later. Pierce admitted he shot the horse after mistaking it for a black bear. The “beloved pet,” a sorrel gelding named Peppys Charge it Up (‘Mac’), was being boarded at the Springtown property. Pierce pleaded guilty in Pembroke court Feb. 22 and was fined $1,000 for careless hunting and $1,000 for hunting at night. He has also been suspended from hunting for two years and must complete the Ontario Hunter Education Course prior to obtaining a hunting licence in the future. Court heard that on the night of Oct. 31, Pierce was hunting between Calabogie and Burnstown later than the allowed time of half-an-hour after sunset. He noticed what he believed was a black bear approaching him and shot the animal. On inspecting the animal, he determined that it was, in fact, a horse from a neighboring property. He then attempted to cover up the incident by dragging the horse to his property and concealing it. The owner searched for ‘Mac’ for six weeks, including running a newspaper advertisement asking for information about the missing horse, before finally discovering the partially concealed body on Dec. 11

Two women on women’s day International Women’s Day was celebrated this past Tuesday, March 8, with activities and information shared by millions across Canada and the world. Two prominent area women in powerful positions, members of Parliament Karen McCrimmon and Cheryl Gallant, participated in women’s day. The point of women’s day is to achieve full gender equality, which has yet to be realized. A gender pay gap persists across the globe and women are still not present in equal numbers in business or politics. United Nations statistics show women’s education, health and violence against them remains significantly worse than that of men. McCrimmon and Gallant are among the lucky few, and share a responsibility to lend other women a helping hand. However, the two couldn’t be further apart on style and substance when it comes to this topic and others. McCrimmon, the Kanata-Carleton MP, doesn’t normally bother with superficial issues like the clothes a woman wears in the workplace. But Gallant, the Renfrew-NipissingPembroke MP, does. And, unfortunately for serious-minded people, the latter’s view has become a news story. McCrimmon usually wears a red shirt on Friday to help show her support for soldiers. On Feb. 19 an accident meant she was forced to change. Wearing red on Fridays is by no means
the most she has done to show her support. McCrimmon did two tours of Afghanistan, is the first female navigator and first female commander of an air squadron. Her support is beyond reproach. Or one would suppose. Gallant, who has never been in the military, chided McCrimmon in the House of Commons for the clothing she wore that day. So much for lending a sister a helping hand. The issue is silly, of course. McCrimmon isn’t commenting because it is beneath the dignity of her position. Gallant isn’t commenting because well, we don’t know why. But the scenario is revealing in that it shows what each MP values. McCrimmon believes actions and laying her life on the line is significant. Gallant likely has an extensive collection of red tops. The irony is that, to follow the logic, Gallant expects every Canadian to wear certain colours on certain days. How about blue on Mondays in support of capitalism? That type of thinking is the “creeping fascism” one veteran referred to in our story last week. In the spirit of International Women’s Week, perhaps constituents - both men and women - could help educate Gallant on what it means to be an effective MP, woman, and charitable human being.
Dance raised $1,600 for Legion Turkeys more appropriate, Renfrew Mercury letter To the Editor:
Sorry for the late notice. On Dec. 31, the Royal Canadian Legion held a New Year’s dance. I would like to take the time to thank everyone who was involved. Way too many people to mention all the names. So thank you to all the food donations, money donations, prize donations and their time. Without everyone’s kindness,

it would not have been possible. A special thank you goes out to Steve St. Michael for his generous donation of a guitar. Total money raised was $1,600, which all went to Royal Canadian Legion Branch 148. So thanks again for making this event a huge success.
Considering the scheme (using images of dead soldiers for a sales pitch), and the person involved, perhaps Cheryl Gallant should have been pushing turkeys instead of hams.

Horton council supports effort to bring in Syrian refugees Tiffany Lepack
tlepack@metroland.com
Renfrew is a very welcoming place and it shows by the efforts of a small but mighty local group. Renfrew Refugee Welcome Group (RRWG) is working extremely hard to make way for a refugee family to come to Renfrew and the Township of Horton is the latest to support the project. Two members of RRWG made a presentation to Horton council on March 2, asking for council to support the group’s efforts in a non-financial way. “We felt the project needed to be community-based and thought who are our leaders, so we are asking you for support and leadership,” Marlene Thompson told
council. “We are not looking for money, but we are asking you to consider a motion in support of our efforts. “It would send a positive and strong message to the community.” Council heard the group of almost 60 people have been working since October 2015 to bring a Syrian family to Renfrew. Henry Venema told council they have been very successful in their fundraising efforts. “Immigration Canada says we need to have $34,000 to support the family for one year. “We have $38,000 in the bank so far. Those funds raised since October indicates the generosity of our community … it is quite exciting to see the group come
together.” They told council the family of five includes a mother, father and three children ages eight, five and one and they are currently in Jordan. “We are residents of the township and hope as council you will say you support this so people know this is legitimate as there is some sentiment we shouldn’t do this. Deputy Mayor Robert Johnston was the first to speak on the matter, stating he supports the project with reservation and hopes none of them will cause any trouble when they arrive. Coun. Jamey Larone thanked them for the presentation and said he admired what they were doing. “It is nice to know there are people like

you to provide shelter and financial support to them. “I am sure there are lots of barriers,” said Coun. Glen Campbell. “Congratulations on stepping forward.” At the end of the meeting, the following motion was approved: “The council of the Township of Horton gives non-financial support to the Renfrew Refugee Welcome Group endeavours to bring a Syrian family to Renfrew.” “It’s a really important and meaningful motion that they passed to endorse the work that we are doing to bring a Syrian family to Renfrew,” said Thompson after the meeting. “We appreciated the opportunity to speak. We are very pleased and happy that council felt they could support us.”

GRAND ROUNDS RVH Foundation moves to new location
As part of the ongoing redevelopment project at RVH, the Foundation took occupancy of a new location as of March 11. “We’re pleased we could provide a new space that gives the Foundation more prominence and is more visible to the community,” says Chris Ferguson, RVH Vice President of Patient Care Services, who worked closely with the architect in planning the redevelopment of the hospital. The Foundation was established in 1989 to support Renfrew Victoria Hospital by raising and managing funds for equipment needs and services. “We are grateful to the hospital for the space we had over the years and even more grateful for the new ,” notes Barb Desilets, Foundation Executive Director.
“It is very exciting to see the dedicated space for the foundation. Over the years, the office was relocated to accommodate patient care needs so, as part of this redevelopment project, we can now have a permanent location,“ adds Jim Lemenchick, Foundation Chair. Core hours of the foundation office are Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m., but they are always willing to accommodate donor needs. As you enter the main front doors, turn left past the gift shop, and you will find the Foundation office on your left, just a few steps along the hospital’s main corridor. The staff looks forward to serving our community in the new location—visitors are always welcome.
Barb Desilets, RVHF Executive Director, Diana Freitag, RVHF Coordinator, and Hannah MacMillan, RVHF Development Coordinator are settling into their new office.

Toastmasters speak out in Renfrew club, area contests Members of the various Ottawa Valley Toastmasters Clubs recently competed in both club and area contests. Three of the clubs got together on Feb. 10 for a combined club contest at the Arnprior District High School library. Seven members from Arnprior, Renfrew and Valley Vintage Advanced Toastmasters represented their various clubs in the International Speech and Table Topics Contests. As judges were brought in from Ottawa, it was felt that having all the contests on the same night would be the best use of everyone’s time. Each club had their own contests. First-place winners of each of the contests advanced to the Area 10 contest on Feb. 20 at the Arnprior Public Library. On Feb. 20, the winners from all the club contests competed for the opportunity to advance to the Division B Contest, which will be held on March 19 in Ottawa. Beware income tax fraudsters: OPP
Rotary raises funds, awareness for mental health centre The Renfrew Rotary annual trivia event March 5 attracted 108 people competing in 18 dynamic teams. Rotary Hall at the Bonnechere Manor was packed to capacity with the “salacious savants” vying for the prize of top trivia talent. The questions were on varied topics with entertaining performances of songs by some of the contestants. The winning team was the ‘Sen-
sible Worms’, comprised of the Jeff Lehoux, Jessica Belanger, Laura Hunter, Joan Daley, Frank Belanger and Mike McCormick. All winners generously opted to donate their cash prize to the cause of the evening. The proceeds for the event ($2,000) will go to the Robbie Dean Centre, a local organization that helps to meet the mental health

needs of our youth. Tom Sydney, a counsellor at the centre, opened the evening with a short explanation of the services offered. With no government funding,
the Robbie Dean Centre relies on donations and generating funding through volunteer efforts. Renfrew Rotary is happy to support the Robbie Dean Centre, help-
ing to raise awareness in the community and provide a much needed service. And the trivia night is one way not only to raise awareness but also have a fun evening out.
NOTICE TO THE RENFREW COUNTY ELECTORATE This article contains two disturbing videos produced by concerned citizens to expose the truth about what’s going on behind the scenes all across the United Sates and Canada. In fact this is exactly what the administration of Kathleen Wynn are now in the process of implementing using the Environmental protection act, Endangered Species Act, Environmental / Conservation groups, The First Nations lobby, Vested Corporate interests, and most especially the agenda driven MNR supported Watershed Committee’s, riddled with people who favor such sustainable energy initiatives as the exorbitantly expensive wind turbines that have cost Ontario taxpayers billion of dollars, yet to date contribute less than 1% of the electricity going into the power grid, and as such these Watershed Committee’s across our province have a biased when it comes to endorsing the agencies who are trying to establish the Conservation Authorities area’s they are determined to impose on vast tracts of the Renfrew County watershed’s, forests, lakes, rivers, streams and wetlands, as well as regulating the ownership, use, and development of privately owned farmlands, woodlots, aggregate deposits, natural resources, recreational trails, and all rural and municipal properties. Like it or not it’s the truth folks, because that’s what the province in concert with their regional agency functionaries are currently engaged in doing, and there’s more of the same in store for the entire Province, and most especially for all Renfrew County municipalities. In the forefront of all this are the Renfrew County Planner formerly from Toronto - a Pembroke jp2g consultant formerly from Muskoka, a former MNR Propaganda Minister, and the former Pembroke MNR Manager now employed as the Renfrew County Property and Development Manager - all of whom in the opinion of many, are either directly, or indirectly, confederate in promoting a County Official Plan that is not in the best interests of our municipality or it’s property owners, nor the future growth and development of the Whitewater Region. Instead the County Official Plan as it now stands is clearly in the interest’s of furthering the property and people control agenda emanating from the administration of Premiere Kathleen Wynn, who is currently running Ontario into the ground with her socialist engineering fantasies, while incurring the biggest debt obligations per capita of any comparable jurisdiction on the North America continent. Indeed all of the elements contained in this provincial people and property control agenda are, it’s clear we need to divest ourselves of the functionaries who are promoting it by hiring our own planner and regaining control over our destiny from those working against us, who while being paid with our hard earned tax dollars to serve our interests are widely perceived as failing to do so. For all those who are concerned about the future of Renfrew County in general and our Whitewater Region in particular, the attached video’s links “Are A Definite Must Watch” - because therein you will learn the disturbing truth about a draconian agenda currently being implemented all across the North America continent, and be assured the people behind it will not stop until they are forced to “By We The People” - however for that to happen requires educating the Whitewater council members several of whom I hear apparently think the County Official Plan is just fine , which means they are essentially in the dark as to what it’s dire implications for the future really are, for example it was recently brought to my attention that when questioned several councilors admitted they had scarcely even read it, yet they were asking people “What’s are your objections to the County official plan because I don’t see anything wrong with it” however the information provided by the video’s at the conclusion of this article may well cause them to reassess their position. That said I would greatly appreciate everyone sharing this article on social media outlets and forwarding it to their contacts, because the truth is the Renfrew county electorate County do not fully understand what’s been going on since they were forced into the amalgamations, that precipitated the problems we are experiencing now, and by extension in the absence of affirmative action being taken by our municipal council to correct this situation, what’s going to transpire in the future. This article and it’s accompanying video’s are also available on the “whitewaterevents.ca” and “whitewaternews.ca” websites where the electorate can be made aware of the origin, scope, and ultimate objective of the agenda emanating from Politicians and bureaucratic planner in Queens Park. To sum up in no way do I purpose to criticize a single member of the Whitewater council, all of whom are laboring under great pressures to resolve several critical issues. To the contrary I have every confidence that once armed with the requisite information to move forward the entire council will proceed with the job they were elected to do, which is to serve the interests of the voters who elected them, and with respect to fulfilling that obligation there are a number of concerned area residents who stand ready to assist them wherever possible now and in the future. These video’s are also being sent to every Municipal Council in Renfrew County with a view to informing them not only about events that have already taken place, but what the dire implications of the provincial agenda to create Conservation Authority area’s controlled and administered by the MNR will mean for all County municipalities far into the future to the detriment of us all. I highly recommend watching these video’s - and thank you very much for reading this article. Donald E. Broome - Cobden

Knights of the Round Table feast at the Renfrew Legion Boyd MacLaren
McNab & District Celtic Heritage Society
As in medieval times the feast at the Renfrew Legion Hall on Feb. 27 had the entertainment in the middle of the room with all guests seated around the outside. The McNab & District Celtic Heritage Society started the evening with a knighting ceremony, as may have been done in the past. The Black Knight (Mackie McLaren) and the Red Knight (Hal Leitch) presented a mercenary, Bhoid of Lorn (Boyd MacLaren), to King Arthur (Dai Bassett) and Saint David (Rev. Jim Kirpatrick) to be knighted. He had been sent down from Dal Riata to join King Arthur’s Knights of the Round Table. Other entertainment saw troubadour Bill Connelly singing about the ghosts of Caerleon Castle and Bard Doug Fleming tell a story. Jan Oaks, one of the mummers, performed a medieval style dance while a second mummer, Chris Kyte, auctioned off some of the husbands including King Arthur (Dai Bassett) The king also told some Welsh stories and sang for those assembled. The organizers are grateful for
G r a m e r c y (thank you) to our special guests Saint David (Rev Jim Kirkpatrick) and King Arthur (Dai Bassett), who truly turned the event into a real medieval style evening. Gramercy to piper Alan Cole who patently piped every course to Saint David and the king for their approval and to our jester Michline Blondin who bravely risked her life to make sure the food was not “poisoned” before the king allowed it to be served to everyone. (That was JIM AUSTIN/SUBMITTEd one of the court From left, the Monks of Glastonberry Abbey - Jarod Jackson, Danae Hares and An- jester’s jobs in medieval times.) thony MacLaren – at the medieval feast. Many thanks to all of the above. As well, the Mcnab eryone in case someone is missed). all entertainers, especially Kyle Fel& District Celtic Heritage Society However, the society does want to haver, the minstrel who jumped in thanks everyone who helped in so thank the Renfrew Legion for be- with his mandolin every time there many ways with the Medieval feast ing gracious hosts and for all the was a lull. by publishing stories every week in the hopes of catching the public’s interes, to the radio stations and to all who came out and enjoyed themselves. A very special thank you to photographer Jim Austin, who not only provided wonderful picture memories, some of which are in this paper, but also took on being the Abbott of Glastonberry Abbey and brought some of his monks to serve food for the evening. It was a memorable evening, depicting, to some degree, the more pleasant things that went on in medieval times. Sometimes, during major festivals, the lords would throw feasts like this and offer their peasants and servants food, clothing, drinks and firewood. The local feast was probably somewhere between this and a grand feast but both in the great hall of the castle. Maybe next medieval feast you will want to join to see what we do. At this point in time the McNab & District Celtic Heritage Society hasn’t decided which Celtic nation it will put in the spotlight next. When it does, you will be sure to have some stories about it in the lead-up to the event.
Let’s get our kids moving! Lots of good things happen when our kids move more. Being active doesn’t have to mean planned, structured exercise. All you have to do is encourage that natural urge to ‘Run. Jump. Play. Every day.’

Renfrew Council declares April 5 Sweater Day for Stanley Cup visit Tiffany Lepack
tlepack@metroland.com
The cup is coming. The Stanley Cup that is. And preparations to welcome the sacred trophy on April 5 are well underway. On March 8, Renfrew Council declared April 5 ‘Hockey Sweater Day in Renfrew’ in honour of Lord Stanley’s visit. While the cup, the National Hockey League’s greatest prize, has been in this area it has never been to town for an official visit. During the meeting Rob Barker, NHA/ NHL Birthplace Museum committee member, which is bring the cup to town, addresses council on the exciting event. “It’s the Stanley Cup, it’s pretty exciting its coming to Renfrew. The museum as you all know brought some trophies to Renfrew before and through that and a lot of hard work by members of the board they have been granted the opportunity to have the Stanley Cup come to Renfrew which we all know is hockey’s biggest prize,” said Barker. The timing will be perfect for hockey fans. “The timing is pretty significant as you know the playoffs are underway soon and it will be here just as that is all sort of wrapping up,” said Barker. “Its going to go from here to probably the team that is going to win it.” Barker told council the town is buzzing about the visit. “We believe it brings a lot of economic stimulation to the town the BIA is on board which is excellent. You will see little stickers popping up on all of the windows which is also excellent,” said Barker. “Our intention now is to just build on the momentum, we have the traction now. We are going to start a fundraising campaign to help cover the costs working with local partners and businesses like that.” Council also heard the committee is reaching out to all the schools, local hock-
TIFFANY LEPACK/METROLAND
April 5 is not only the day the Stanley Cup is coming to town it has now been officially declared as Hockey Sweater Day by Renfrew Town council. On hand for the proclamation on March 8 are: Patti Dillabough, left, Garry Dillabough, Jacki Watters, Rob Barker, Mel Blimkie, Doug Sidock, Paige Dillabough, Gladys Sidock, Doug Miller, Jill Blimkie, Sandi Heins, Jim Miller, chair of the NHA/NHL Birthplace Museum and Mayor Don Eady. ey organizations in the Valley and businesses so they are informed about Sweater Day and the cup visit. After the proclamation was officially passed there were some chuckles around the council table about Renfrew getting the cup before the Toronto Maple Leafs. In a press release sent on March 11 the committee provided more details on the visit. The public is welcome to drop by the RCAF Wing (the former Renfrew arena) between 1 and 8 p.m. to view the Stanley Cup, take your own photos with the historic trophy ($5 fee) and see the hockey themed displays by local businesses and private citizens. Organizers hint that there
may be other surprises as well. There will be free admission to the Wing, but donations will be gratefully accepted to help defray cost of bringing the cup to town. Businesses and citizens are also encouraged to get involved in the day. “Fly your favourite team flag or decorate your window. Visitors will enjoy our enthusiasm,” noted the release. HISTORY
The National Hockey Association (NHA) was formed on Dec. 3, 1909 and was financially backed by the O’Brien family of Renfrew, who owned four of the five
original teams. The Town of Renfrew with the support of the Renfrew and Area Chamber of Commerce and the NHA/NHL committee made the following proclamation on the history of the O’Brien family on June 10, 2002: “Renfrew, Ontario, Canada was the place where the Honourable M. J. O’Brien lived all of his adult life, and due to his initiative, influence, resources and the organizational skills of his son Ambrose, the National Hockey Association (1909-1917), later to become the National Hockey League (1917) was born.” For more information or to get involved, call Jim Miller at 613-433-3111 or the NHA/NHL museum at 613-433-2155.

Valley paddling, rafting companies honoured The Ottawa Valley is proudly home of the newly designated Canadian Signature Experiences (CSE): Paddle the Madawaska –a Rapid Education! The outdoor adventures are offered by Madawaska Kanu Centre (MKC) and High Adventure, Historic River (OWL Rafting). Destination Canada announced recently that these sister companies are two of 10 new members of the CSE collection and are the only new experiences from Ontario. With MKC and OWL Rafting’s prestigious new title, they join this collection of travel experiences for all ages in highlighting the rich diversity of Canada’s landscape, people, and culture. The CSE collection shows visitors the diversity of travel experiences that Canada and Canadians have to offer, featuring a full spectrum of opportunities, from urban gems to wilderness adventures and wildlife encounters. MKC and OWL Rafting offer visitors the opportunity to explore the wilderness in a unique way – to get out on the water with friends
and family, soar over rapids and experience the beauty of nature. Their authentic experiences, expert guides, and focus on the visitor have kept beginner to expert paddlers returning year after year. “We couldn’t be more thrilled for our tourism partners,” says Nicole Whiting, executive director of Ontario’s Highlands Tourism Organization. “With the level of commitment they’ve shown to the visitor experience both within their own businesses, and throughout the region, they deserve to be recognized at a national level.” “We are extremely proud that OWL Rafting and MKC have been designated as Canadian Signature Experiences,” notes Melissa Marquardt, marketing co-ordinator with the Ottawa Valley Tourist Association. “They have played an integral role in helping to shape the visitor experience in the Whitewater Capital of Canada.” Claudia Van Wijk of MKC has long been a champion of tourism in the Ottawa Valley and Ontario’s Highlands and has shown dedica-

Van Wijk has played an important role in coordinating businesses to partner in OHTO’s Travel Trade Partnership Project and attend Rendez-Vous Canada, which promotes the region to the international tourism industry and marketplaces. Calabogie school celebrates Lent, embraces winter on March 1. “Once again it is incredible to watch the transformation in the kids over the four weeks as they gain the skills and confidence to successfully navigate down the slopes,” said Donohue. “Kudos to Mrs. Hanniman’s Kindergarten students who are so determined and so excited to be learning this incredible sport.” Continuing an emphasis on outdoor education, Rick Klatt is teaching students about safe and responsible practices when going onto lake ice for ice fishing. Klatt brought special guest Ashley Rae, a fishing expert who currently graces the cover of Ontario Out of Doors magazine, to the school for an ice fishing excursion. “Going to school in an area that provides such incredible opportunities for kids to go outside to play and learn is a tremendous blessing,” said Donohue. “We are also very grateful for the outdoor education funding, and especially to Paul Murphy, Mike Strauss and Krista Smith at Calabogie Peaks who have been incredible partners in making skiing accessible to students. We appreciate and look forward to strengthening the partnership between the Peaks and our school.”

Lenten activities, sports and outdoor fun have kept students busy this winter at St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Calabogie. Lenten season began with the annual Shrove Tuesday pancake meal, principal Rory Donohue reported in a school board news release. Students in all grades enjoyed mini-pancakes made by Mr. Cavanagh’s Grade 5–7 class. Mrs. Sellars’ Grade 2–4 class led the Liturgy of the Word at Ash Wednesday Mass celebrated by Father Ric Starks. Father Starks stressed that “while we all look forward to the joy of Easter, we must first walk with Christ through the suffering of the crucifixion.” The prayers of the faithful focused on the many ways and opportunities to exhibit mercy. St. Joseph’s has started a LOVE (Let Older Volunteers Educate) program. Currently three women come to the school Thursday mornings to read with the students. “It is wonderful to have members of the community, particularly seniors, interacting with the students,” noted Donohue. The school also started a healthy snack program. Students completed the second annual ski clinic, which culminated with a full ski day

Cousins brought with them a special gift to Northcote They didn’t need much of an excuse for Aunt Helen and Uncle Herby to ship off my cousins Ronny and Terry to Northcote from Montreal. But rarely did they come in the dead of winter like they did that year. Uncle Herby said measles were raging in the city, and the only way to avoid the boys getting sick from them was to ship them off to Northcote. And so they arrived, and Aunt Helen stayed only long enough to unpack their suitcases and make a trip to Briscoe’s General Store for treats, and then she was back on the train to Montreal. Beds were shifted. And it always amazed me how Mother would make a few changes and any number of relatives could be bedded down. If that meant three to a bed, so be it. Ronny was old enough to go off with us to the Northcote School, but Terry would spend the day at home with Mother. No permission was needed from our teacher Miss Crosby. All Mother had to do was
Mary Cook’s Memories BY MARY COOK
pack an extra sandwich and cookie in a brown paper bag, and send Ronny off. Young Terry was considered delicate, whatever that meant. But it gave him extra privileges, which didn’t sit well with his older and rambunctious brother Ronny. Ronny said it was all an act, and Terry could turn a ‘ sick spell’ off and on like a light switch. Ronny loved going to the Northcote School, and Terry was quite happy at home with Mother, where he had the run of the house, and especially liked helping Mother in the kitchen, doing little jobs like wiping the windowsills. I vowed we had the cleanest windowsills in all of Renfrew County, as all I had to do was tell Mother I was bored and there was nothing to do, and
she would tell me to either get a cloth and wipe the windowsills, or get the ball of string and knit a dishcloth. I hated both chores with a
passion. After they had been with us about two days, and after we had redded up the kitchen after supper, the table was cleared for the usual board games we played until it was time to go to bed. Ronny told Terry he couldn’t play Parcheesi because he couldn’t read and he couldn’t count. Terry started to cry and told Mother he didn’t feel well. Needless to say, Ronny said it was just an act, and Terry did that all the time when things didn’t go his way. Mother took Terry on her lap, and let him look through her scrap books, but nothing seemed to calm him down, and he kept asking “Aunty, itchy me,” which was his way of asking to have his back
scratched, which he loved. Mother raised up his pajama top, and let out a yelp that I was sure they could be heard on the next farm. “Dear Mary and Joseph ... it’s the measles. He’s covered with them!” We all scrambled from our place at the table to have a look at Terry’s spots. They were there alright. There was hardly a square inch that was spared. Mother immediately phoned Mrs. Beam who everyone in Northcote called before getting old Doctor Murphy to come all the way out from Renfrew. Even over the phone, Mrs. Beam was able to confirm what Mother already expected: Terry had the measles and a good dose of them too! It took another day for the spots to show on Ronny, and he wasn’t at all pleased, and to say Father was overjoyed was a gross exaggeration. “Come all the way from Montreal and bringing the measles with them. A fine kettle of fish.” And then, all in perfect order, each one of us got the red spots,
one after another. The last one to come down with them was my sister Audrey. She turned out to be the sickest, and was no help to Mother at all, who was trying her best to keep seven children from killing each other, as we fought for her attention. Well, it didn’t take long to hear that except for Fat Cora and Two Mile Herman, everyone at the Northcote School was felled with the measles. Miss Crosby refused to close the school, and my sister Audrey said we should send Ronny and Terry packing back to Montreal, spots and all. Of course, that didn’t happen, but for a long time after, that winter was referred to “the time those Lapointe kids brought the measles from Montreal, and infected the entire Northcote community.” Interested in an electronic version of Mary’s books? Public board welcomes students from Syria Susan Humphries Trustee, Renfrew, Horton and Greater Madawaska
Over the course of the last month, Renfrew County District School Board (RCDSB) has welcomed several Syrian students to our schools, including three highly motivated students at Eganville District Public School. Staff and students alike are excited to engage these children in their new learning journey. Despite language differences, it did not take long for the new students to pick up some English words and with the help of technology and translation programs, other students worked hard at picking up some key Arabic words. What wonderful learning opportunities for all. In addition, Walter Zadow Public School and Mackenzie Community School have also welcomed Syrian students to their schools. Public speaking winners
We were definitely enlightened and entertained by four students who demonstrated their public speaking skills at our recent board meeting. We heard about the importance of empowering girls, how to handle germs, positive and negative superstitions, and finally things to consider before getting a driver’s license. These students won first place in their category at the Legion Public Speaking competition: Lacey Shea, Grade 3 at Central Public School; Jenna Schison, Grade 3 at Eganville District Public School; Mackenzie Kelly, Grade 6, Eganville District Public School; Georgia Wiley, Grade 4 at Cobden Public School. All competitors should be very proud of the effort they put forward - these kinds of skills are always valued. Leadership Conference at RCI
Student leaders from every high school in the RCDSB had an incredible opportunity to attend this conference held in late February at RCI. Horizons is designed to inspire, empower and motivate students to make a difference at their schools by providing valuable professional development through one day. The day began with keynote presentations from youth speakers Stu Saunders and Nick Foley, before leading into a share session facilitated by the students themselves. Leaders from different schools had the opportunity to
DI makers
share and discuss ideas, experiences and initiatives. Students came away from the day with more insight into the valuable roles they play in each of our school communities. We were thrilled that our student trustee, Connor Webster, was a key participant.
Dominic, James and Annabelle Vanderzwaag of Beachburg enjoy some handson fun at the Maker Junior booth during this year’s Destination Imagination on March 5 at Arnprior District High School.
Supporting LGBTQ students
As a result of a recent grant received from the Ministry of Education, a student voice forum is being planned for early April to discuss how to foster greater inclusion and awareness of the issues facing students who are a part of the LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans or Questioning) community. Student Success leader Jacqueline Poirier, Mental Health lead Lisa LaRiviere and our student trustee Connor Webster are planning this event and it is expected that eight to 10 students from each high school will attend – both from Gay/Straight Alliance groups and student councils. The goal is to work towards fostering inclusion and ending discrimination that may be faced by LGTBQ students in our schools. Destination Imagination
For the third consecutive year, Arnprior and District High School hosted the regional competition for Destination Imagination. The school was a hive of activity as students, teachers, parents and volunteers. It was a wonderfully organized event and teams from all across Eastern Ontario came together to show their creativity and initiative in working through various challenges. Congratulations to three teams from Central Public School who participated this year. The teams included the Grade 6 team (technical challenge) coached by Paul Simard and Peggy Buffam, the Grade 3 team (improv challenge) coached by Kris Barrie, and the Rising stars SK-1 team coached by Carolyn Neil. The two older teams came in second place and have been invited to the provincial tournament in Toronto. You may recall that Queen Elizabeth Public School had two very successful teams over the past two years; they represented us in the Global competition in Nashville but decided to take a break this year. Congratulations to all students and coaches who were involved this year.

Inuit art enhances new Quail Creek activity room John Carter
john.carter@metroland.com
A new activity room at the Quail Creek Retirement Centre has been brightened by several art works on the walls provided by resident Jasper Lafrance. Many of the works are Inuit art, as Lafrance is a former Arctic bush pilot The avid art collector notes there is not enough space on the walls of his room to hang his many pieces, so he volunteered several of them for the new activity centre. “I might as well share them with everyone else,” he said. “It’s awesome … we’re
grateful he’s sharing them with the rest of the residents,” said Quail Creek activities director Sue Diotte. “It’s really enhancing the quality of life here.” After many adventures in northern Canada, Lafrance and his wife Wilhelmina moved to Renfrew from Ottawa in 2001 and were active in the community, particularly with Renfrew Seniors Home Support. He moved into Quail Creek soon after Wilhelmina’s death in late 2013. More than 60 people attended a wine and cheese reception March 11 to officially open the new resiJOHN CARTER/METROLAND dents’ activity room. Report from Parliament As we observe the Season of Lent, culminating in Easter Sunday, I was moved to recognize, in a statement to the House of Commons, the genocide directed against Christians in the Middle East. The United Nations (UN) defines genocide as wilful acts intended to destroy a national, ethnic, racial or religious group. This describes the campaign by the Islamic State of the Levant, ISIL, in the Middle East, to particularly target Christians. Christians have been crucified, beheaded, raped, enslaved, subjected to forced conversion, or immediate death. On February 4, the Parliament of the European Union passed a unanimous resolution recognizing the Islamic State’s attacks on Christians for what they are—genocide. In Canada, the Liberal Prime Minister refuses to join the rest of the civilized world in recognizing the ISIS campaign against Christians as genocide. The Prime Minister does not think Christians are the right kind of refugee. A member of the Prime Minister’s family is the prominent lobbyist for a suspected sleeper agent for al-Qaida plotting to commit extremism or espionage, from being deported. The Liberal party is revoking the law that allows Canadian authorities to deport convicted terrorists with dual citizenship to their country of origin after they finish their Canadian prison sentence. In the case of Christians, they are not to be found in the U.N. refugee camps. Christians have been attacked and targeted by Islamic Extremists, and driven from them. They go without any shelter provided by UNHCR, International Rescue Committee and other international NGOs, or any education for their children. The so-called Islamic State and other radical groups openly glorify the slaughter of Christians. It was with moral clarity that our Conservative government chose to help refugees in greatest need. This moral clarity has been abandoned in Ottawa. The victims of genocide are crying out for our help. In addition to persecuted Christians and other religious minorities, millions of refugees languish in UN refugee camps in places like Africa. Politics in Ottawa have taken a radical shift to the left. The longer this government is in office, the more desperate will be the cries from the most needy. As your Federal Member of Parliament, I am pleased to represent you on a variety of issues. Whether that issue is promoting agriculture, international trade, Canadian Unity, AECL, CNL, the military or jobs in the working forest, I am here to serve you! As always, if you have any concerns of a federal nature, or just want to share your views with me, please do not hesitate to contact my office. Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MP Cheryl Gallant is adding her voice to concerns the decision to cancel air support for soldiers on the ground in Iraq jeopardizes their safety and will cost lives. “The spouses and children of the Canadian Special Operations Regiment (CSOR) are my constituents. I am deeply concerned about the decision to remove air support while at the same time increasing the number of soldiers on the ground,” Gallant said in a recent news release. “Those soldiers are from Garrison Petawawa. They know I have their back even if the current Prime Minister does not.” The Liberals recently unveiled their revamped non-combat mission to battle the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, including a plan to increase the number of Canadian special forces in northern Iraq. In a role similar to Afghanistan, the troops will train, advise and aid Kurdish forces fighting ISIL. That will include directing airstrikes and eliminating enemy positions using other weapons if necessary. “We all remember the politically motivated decision by the previous Liberal government to cancel the Sea King replacement helicopters. When our soldiers were first sent to Afghanistan, they were forced to use roads lined
with bombs, with the resulting loss of life,” said Gallant. “Once elected, our Conservative government provided strategic lift. The casualty rate dropped.” The Liberal government’s plan to allow special forces to continue on the front lines in Iraq calling in airstrikes is the same sort of mission that a year ago Trudeau denounced as combat, she noted. “It was absolutely misleading to Canadians to characterize the presence of CF-18 Jets as combat. As recently as December, CF-18 Canadian Fighter Jets provided ground cover to protect Canadian soldiers. Now those jets are gone. “The reality is our coalition partners will protect their own soldiers first before coming to Canada’s defence,” she said. In mid-December, Trudeau flip-flopped on what is combat, maintains Gallant. Under a Liberal government, Canadian special forces were involved in a day-long pitched battle as they joined with Kurdish troops to push back ISIL gunmen. The Canadians were fired on and fired back. “Rather than wasting billions of dollars on UN pet projects to buy a seat on the UN Security Council, the money would be better spent on equipment that keeps our soldiers safe when we send them into harm’s way,” said Gallant.

Helen Scheels Since Mom’s (Grandma’s) passing on February 22, we have heard many comments over and over again: “she was a gracious lady”, “she was the most caring and compassionate person I knew”, ”she was a good-natured soul who was proud of her family”, and “she was my mentor who took me under her wing”. We take comfort in knowing that she touched so many lives in a positive way and the manner in which she did so, will be her legacy now. To the physicians, nurses and staff at the Arnprior Hospital, we want to express our sincerest “thank you” for being a colleague to Mom over the years and for caring for her as a patient especially during her last month. We also appreciate the support you gave each of us as we sat by her bedside. To the hospital administration, who approved our special request to make a short funeral procession past her beloved hospital – thank you. To the various colleagues and staff who stood in the cold that morning to pay tribute to Mom – thank you. We were deeply touched by your presence. To the hand bell choir who made Mom’s funeral service a one-of-a-kind tribute – thank you. Not only did you make last-minute sacrifices to perform but you also played Mom’s (Grandma’s) favourite piece of music. How thoughtful. To all of you who are not listed here by name or by function or by profession, we can assure you that we know who you are. It is only due to space constraints that you are not being individually acknowledged in this announcement. We know how you touched Mom’s (Grandma’s) life over the years. We know what you have done for our family as a whole – especially most recently with your cards, condolences, floral arrangements, donations and words of encouragement. We are forever grateful to each of you. Mom often said “Life makes changes in all of us”. Our lives were forever changed on February 22nd, but with all of your love and support, our “new” life without Mom has begun its journey. There is a home not made by hands, Beyond it’s golden door, Awaits the one who’s now away, Not lost just gone before. And in the home not made by hands, The master will prepare, A place for us and he calls, We’ll meet our loved one there.
Dearest mother, thou are not forgotten, Nor ever wilt thou be, As long as life and memory last. We will remember thee. We cannot clasp your hand, dear mother, Your face we cannot see, But let this little token show, We still remember thee. A mother’s memory is more than gold, And a mother’s worth can never be told; A loving mother good and kind, A Beautiful memory left behind. For all of us she did her best, God grant her now eternal rest. Len, Maurice & Gail. Ursula & Don
