The Renfrew Public Library’s Yaki fundraising concert had a huge crowd at the Ma-Te-Way Activity Centre on March 15 with most kids out of school for March Break. Yaki was very engaging with the crowd but alas his arm got sore and he called upon Brooke-Lynn Shelhorn to help him play his guitar.

Town of Renfrew declares old town hall building surplus Tiffany Lepack tlepack@metroland.com

Renfrew’s old town hall and the clock tower are iconic symbols in downtown Renfrew. However, on March 14 the Town of Renfrew declared the old town hall building as surplus. Council officially did three things: declared the property at 249 Raglan St. South surplus to the needs of the municipality, directed staff to issue a request for proposal for real estate broker services to sell it, and directed staff to commence the Ontario Heritage Act designation process for the building. Coun. Tom Sidney stressed they had a lot of discussion on the matter, and it was not just a ‘fly by the seat of their pants’ decision. “It will remain outside the exact same, should we find the proper buyer,” said Sidney. “(The report) is a job well done, every ‘t’ is crossed to make sure we keep the dignity of the building.” Reeve Peter Emon spoke to the motion during the meeting, stating the municipality cannot justify or afford to keep the building and it made sense to explore options to remove it from the asset base. “At the same time, protecting the important features so it’s not a fire sale, it’s going about it in a responsible way, and I am very comfortable to explore this,” said Emon. The report submitted to council stated the building, which is home to the post office, NHA/NHL Birthplace

On March 14 the Town of Renfrew declared the building at 249 Raglan St. South, which is home to the post office and the NHA/ NHL Birthplace Museum, as surplus to municipal needs. Tiffany Lepack/ Metroland

Museum, and a number of offices, incurred a cumulative loss of $78,504 since being acquired by the town in 2005. The report also noted that between 2017-2020 its capital requirements, including roof work, heating and air conditioning, electrical upgrades, an elevator and more will cost $1,285,000. After the meeting, Emon stressed they had senior management look into the costing of the building and whether they could protect it.

“Can we protect it as a cultural/visual asset? We think we can … the façade can be maintained,” said Emon. “Part of conditions of sale might be they have to get plans approved by council as they move forward.” He explained that there are various mechanisms through the Heritage Act and also through the sales process to protect the visual integrity of the building and maintain its significance to the downtown core and community. Emon said they have had some pre-

liminary discussions with the museum. “We have had a meeting to talk with them saying, look, we are not going to leave you high and dry. We have some ideas and so they have agreed to meet with me on a memo of understanding, go-forward basis, they haven’t scheduled it yet but as soon as they do I will sit down and we will work out something,” said Emon. “We recognize again the value to them being here as an attraction and

an experience, it’s all about experiences when you come to visit. Whether you are a day-tripper or here for a week, we think they provide good value to the experience here and we want to maintain that and we will work something out that allows them to continue if at all possible. Their demands are not unreasonable and there isn’t a spot we can’t meet in the middle.” Jim Miller, the director of the museum, was not in agreement that the building should be sold. “I don’t think the building should be up for sale. It is a town historical building,” said Miller. “It (the clock tower) is on our website and the BIA’s, it’s what the town focuses on, everything you see has the clock tower on it. In my opinion, the building is an asset, not a surplus.” Miller questioned what someone would do with the building. “If they put the museum out, what would they do, what would they do where the post office is?” asked Miller. Canada Post issued a brief statement on the potential sale and how they would be affected. “The sale of the building will not change Canada Post’s commitment to provide the residents of Renfrew with a full range of postal services and products,” said Darcia Kmet, media relations, for the crown corporation in an email on March 20. “Canada Post is currently a tenant in the building located at 249 Raglan St. South and plans to continue to operate the post office from this location.”

Fire destroys vacant home on Bruce Street in Renfrew Sherry Haaima sherry.haaima@metroland.com

A single-family home at 531 Bruce Street was destroyed by fire on Tuesday, March 14. “We got the call at 10:22 p.m.,” said Renfrew Fire Chief Guy Longtin. “When we arrived the house was fully involved. It had been called in by a neighbour who noticed flames coming out of the back of the home.” Cold, snowy, windy conditions made the work of fighting the fire all the more difficult, said the chief. Fortunately the home was vacant, he said. “The tenants had moved a couple of weeks ago and the owner was looking to rent it again,” said Longtin. The storey-and-a-half home was completely destroyed. “The damage is very extensive,” said the chief. “We actually had to bring in a high hoe to knock it down. It was too dangerous to leave the walls standing.” Because there were no hydrants in the area, the Renfrew department activated mutual aid and the Horton Fire Department attended with their tanker truck and hauled water from a hydrant at the corner of Bruce and Moore streets. Ten full-time and seven part-time firefighters were on-scene, along with paramedics and police. Police closed Bruce Street and detoured traffic down Maloney Road. Paramedics provided some relief from the conditions. “It was nice to have them there with a nice warm ambulance to climb into,” he said. Emergency officials were at the scene until about 3:30 a.m. The house is a total write-off, said Longtin, noting an estimated total loss of around $160,000.

A fire on Bruce Street on March 14 left the vacant house a pile of rubble, top, after the Renfrew Fire Department put the fire out late into the evening, bottom left. Renfrew Fire Chief Guy Longtin said they had to bring in a high hoe to knock the structure down. The response team consisted of 10 full-time firefighters and seven part-time fire fighters along with support from the Horton Fire Department.

Sunshine Coach receives grant; FUNday March 26 Tiffany Lepack tlepack@metroland.com

Everyone is getting on the Ride the Bus campaign. The Sunshine Coach Service has received approval for $110,655 in grant money and has committed to raising the needed matching funds. Norm Dagg, executive director for Sunshine Coach Service, was at Renfrew council on March 7 when council approved a motion to enter into an agreement with the provincial government for the funds. “We wish to thank the Town of Renfrew for your assistance in this process and especially (treasurer) Keray O’Reilly for taking the point and guiding us through this grant application process and for his hard work for many years in administering the MTO gas tax rebate program for specialized transportation,” said Dagg. According to the council report the funding is being provided through a new federal infrastructure program called the Public Transit Infrastructure Fund (PTIF), which the federal government is providing up to 50 per cent of the funding needed

for projects supported under the agreement. Last summer the federal and provincial government announced a bilateral agreement that will provide more than $2.97 billion in combined funding by the governments of Canada, Ontario and municipalities. Last fall Sunshine Coach identified four projects that met the criteria of the PTIF grant and made the application for the maximum allowed. Dagg informed council that all four projects were approved and they will receive the maximum funding. The projects include: acquire a new accessible bus to replace the existing bus, which is at the end of its life cycle; acquire a new small coach to replace an existing coach, which is at the end of its life cycle; acquire upgrades to their fleet communications capability to improve efficiency and client safety; and acquire equipment to upgrade the garage and improve in-house vehicle maintenance capability. “Timing of PTIF grant is optimal, we were facing significant capital challenges in the coming years in order to maintain our fleet/trip capacity at current lev-

els,” Dagg told council. “We are planning to implement all of our projects prior to year-end 2017 and are currently gathering quotations for vehicles that meet the Canadian Content and Ministry of Transportation Commercial Accessible Vehicle Standards.” Dagg explained the Ride the Bus Campaign is built upon partnerships with local service clubs and will feature numerous fund raising events over the next several months. “To date the Ride the Bus Campaign has attained 44 per cent of the target amount. “This means that no ratepayer dollars will be expended to secure the full PTIF funding and will result in $221,330 being invested in accessible transportation infrastructure, which will be a benefit to everyone in our community who are living with disabilities.” FUNday The next big event for the Sunshine Coach fundraising campaign is the Sunday FUNday on March 26 at the Renfrew Armouries from 2 to 5 p.m. Dagg says the event is partially in memory of Lee Sharpe, one of the founders of the organization who recently died.

“Her two favourite things were dancing and fundraising,” said Dagg. Admission is by goodwill donation. “The funds raised will go to the Ride the Bus campaign to help us purchase a new accessible bus,” said Dagg. “It’s going to be a good time. It’s free, but a goodwill donation would be appreciated.” Dagg notes this was Sharpe’s last big fundraising initiative that she was involved with. “It’s kind of fitting, it was her last project and very important to her, so if we can bring it to fruition that would be great,” said Dagg. There will be a slide show of photos of her and time to remember her in a more celebratory way. “This will be a chance to talk and share stories of her, she touched a lot of people,” said Dagg. Three well-known bands have donated their services; Countrymen, Fifth Street and Riley New Band. “The music will be great, these are all local bands with a long performance history,” said Dagg. “It has all the elements of a great party!”

Town of Renfrew not happy with commercial MPAC assessment Tiffany Lepack tlepack@metroland.com

Commercial property values in the Town of Renfrew have taken quite the hit. Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) account manager Ross Jeffery delivered the 2016 assessment update to Renfrew council on March 14. In 2012 the full current value assessment (CVA) for commercial properties was $101,192, 852 and the 2017 CVA is $89,781,510. That represents a decline of close to $12 million of the CVA or 11.3 per cent. “I just don’t feel that it’s quite justified to drop that much,” said Mayor Don Eady after the meeting. “It’s such a huge impact.” During the meeting, Eady said he did not agree with the new assessments. He was also not happy finding out in mid-March when the appeal date is the end of the month; he said it should have been presented to them sooner. “Some are fine, some I totally disagree with,” the mayor

said. “We need to do something. I honestly think some of the specifics in the Town of Renfrew are wrong.” Jeffery told the mayor he would work with them. “I will escalate it up, our goal is to make every reassessment better,” said Jeffery. Fair process Reeve Peter Emon questioned if the process was fair. “They (MPAC) are advocating on our behalf, something needs to be down to let us know the trends,” said Emon. “We should be the primary recipient of information. MPAC really needs to figure out who their client is, we should be the number one client.” Jeffery informed council they do provide quarterly trends but admits there were some changes.

“We met with the treasurer in September, some of those numbers changed to be fair to him,” said Jeffery. Coun. Tom Sidney said the information was disheartening. Both Eady and Sidney referenced one business that only a few years ago had building permits valued at $15 million and now they were assessed at $9 million. “It’s up to code and busy. I have a really hard time if the business is booming why it’s now worth $5 million less,” said Sidney. “At the end of the day, it’s us getting screamed at because someone in Toronto says it’s $5 million less. “It doesn’t make sense, it seems like no one cares. I just don’t think it’s right, the impact is huge … I totally disagree.” After the meeting treasurer Keray O’Reilly admitted there would be some impact due to the changes.

Grant funds coming

IS THE PLACE TO BE FOR CANADA 150

Tiffany Lepack tlepack@metroland.com

It’s not official yet, but Renfrew has been approved for a major grant to help with improvements on Barnet Boulevard. It was announced at the March 7 council meeting that Renfrew will receive $1,027,028 from the Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund (OCIF) and the town portion will be $1,389,518. The town will finance its funds through a combination of gas tax funds, reserves, taxation and Renfrew Power Generation dividends that were received, all which were identified in the 2017 capital budget. Mike Asselin, director of development and works for the town, explained this is the third intake for the OCIF program and the town applied for and was approved for the reconstruction of Barnet Boulevard from Raglan Street South to Eighth Street. “This announcement hasn’t formally been made by the province,” said Asselin. “(We are) required after notification of being successful in grant that we pass a contribution agreement without much fanfare.” The estimated total cost of the project is $2,416,546 Coun. Tom Sidney asked about the timelines for the project. Asselin informed him that once this motion was passed (which it was), they would hire the designers, during the summer they will complete a detailed design, go to tender in January/February 2018 for construction next year.

“It will create a shift in the distribution of tax dollars between the various property classes,” said O’Reilly. “Once the 2017 tax rate has been set by council (at a special council meeting on March 21), then we can determine the amount of the shift between classes.” Special meeting As to how much it will affect the ratepayers is to be determined. Council had two days of budget meetings on March 15 and 16 and will finalize things at the special council meeting next week. “We still need ‘x’ number of dollars to operate the Town of Renfrew, the burden is switching from commercial, more over to residential,” said Eady afterwards. “Its not going to be a huge, huge impact but it does have an impact and really until we get into the budget we cant really quote that figure for sure.”

Town of Renfrew receives grant money for new tourist booth Tiffany Lepack tlepack@metroland.com

Tourists coming to Renfrew will soon have something new to check out while getting all of their tourism information at Haramis Park. On March 7 council was informed the town has been approved for a grant for $60,000 from the federal government. The total project cost is set for $185,000 and council approved entering into the grant agreement and fund its portion. “The Town of Renfrew was successful in our application for the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure program,” said Kevin Hill, director of parks and recreation for

the Town of Renfrew. “As you can recall at the special meeting on June 21, 2016, council deemed the reconstruction of the tourist information centre its priority for the submission of the grant.” There was some discussion around the council table on the timing of the project. “I read here the project was not included in the capital budget for 2017. “So help me understand this, we are now being asked to include $125,000 in the 2017 capital budget in addition to?” questioned Coun. Mike Coulas. “Why were we not including that if we knew that was coming?” Hill noted at the time of the bud-

get they did not have all of the information needed to include it. “When it was presented to the recreation committee, we did not have word of successful application,” said Hill. “We just received notice mid-February of our successful application.” “We still have a choice,” Mayor Don Eady replied. “We don’t have to accept the grant … of course I think we would like to and find the money someplace.” Coun. Kate Windle asked for a timeline on the project. Hill explained they have been working with local contractors and they do have a conceptual design, which they have been assured can be done within their budget.

The goal is to start construction before July 1 and complete it by Dec. 31 and the students would still be able to work on-site. Eady pointed out the town could pitch in, in other ways. “A lot of our contribution can be in kind, it doesn’t all have to be dollar and cents, we have some room to move there,” said Eady. “We are working with the company that’s coming into Renfrew to put on a show (SawTech). They could be a partner.” Coulas question how much funding was assured and Hill clarified it is a maximum of $60,000 or onethird of the total project cost. Treasurer Keray O’Reilly explained the funds could be utilized

from other sources. “There are a couple of items in the capital budget that can fund this. We do have an allocation of $200,000 for facilities, that’s typically for restoration of existing facilities but there maybe some money there that’s not already committed,” said O’Reilly. “We also have two infrastructure levy reserves that are specifically designated for 2017, as well, so once we get the actually project designed and get some cost estimates we will be in a better position to identify the exact source of the money.” The former tourist booth was demolished in early 2017 because of the age of the facility. Last year, a temporary facility was used for the tourism students at Haramis Park.

Groves Park Lodge gets council nod for planned expansion Tiffany Lepack tlepack@metroland.com

Groves Park Lodge has the green light to expand. The long-term care facility at 470 Raglan St. N., owned by Gem Health Care Group, received approval from Renfrew council March 14. The zoning bylaw amendment will reduce the minimum interior sideyard width from 7.5 m to 3 m and they will now apply the minimum parking requirements at a rate of one space per two beds. They also plan to demolish the garbage storage area and add six additional parking spots. The facility was first built in 1976 with 64 beds and 2,386 square feet. In 2006 they expanded, increasing the number of beds to 96 and an

additional 1,472 square feet. Currently there are 35 private rooms and they plan to add 32 more private rooms. In addition they will renovate the existing structure to allow 16 double rooms to accommodate the 96 residents. Renovations will also allow for a larger kitchen, additional dining room, larger laundry area and more activity rooms. Another addition was proposed in 2010 to accommodate additional beds; at that time the owner applied for the zoning bylaw amendment to reduce the sideyard and was approved by council. However, the owner never completed the approval process or the construction of the addition. Town planner Ivan Burton told council there was a public meeting with the neighbour attending who was concerned about the new

Renfrew council passes remuneration report Renfrew council received and carried the statement of council and police services board remuneration and expenses for 2016. Treasurer Keray O’Reilly explained they follow the direction of the County of Renfrew interpretation of expenses. Recognize, report fraud It’s something all of us have encountered in one form or another – fraud. March is recognized as Fraud Prevention Month and on March 6, the Ontario Provincial Police officially launched its 13th annual campaign, along with the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre. Throughout the month of March, OPP and its partners, will be raising public awareness and providing helpful tips to prevent an increasing number of Canadians from falling victim to fraud. Specifically, the OPP will target three mass marketing fraud types, including the emergency and Canada Revenue Agency scams, romance scams and Microsoft/computer service scams. According to the anti-fraud centre, from January 2014 to December 2016, it’s estimated Canadians lost more than $291 million to fraudsters; with the largest demographic targeted being seniors between the age of 60 to 79. And fraud is happening more and more. Complaints jumped to 90,000 in 2016 over just

under 70,000 in 2015. Did you know that 95 per cent of fraud victims never report the crime? Whether it’s embarrassment or indifference, it’s important to report the incidences to police in order to spread the word about different types of scams. And they’re easier than ever to report thanks to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre’s new Fraud Reporting System (services.rcmp-grc. gc.ca) which offers secure sign-in methods. Alternatively, fraud can be reported to Crime Stoppers anonymously by calling 1-800222-TIPS or online at www.tipsubmit.com. There are a few basic tips we can all practice in our daily lives to ensure fraud prevention, starting with never giving out personal or banking information to people at the door, over the phone, through email or social media, or on unsecured websites. Be cautious. Be smart. Remember, if it leaves you with lots of questions or sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Liberals’ broken promises on electoral reform are shameful To the editor:

Democracy can be full of surprises, as two events in recent months have shown. On the one hand, the United States elected its most divisive president ever, a professional con man steeped not as much in conservative ideology as in patriarchal authoritarianism. Donald Trump united PhDs, every living former U.S. president, and a legion of civil society institutions against himself, but he turned all the standard rules of politics and civil rational behaviour on their head. On the other hand, the Parliamentary Committee on Electoral Reform recommended that Canada replace its first-past-the-post (FPTP) electoral reform system with a proportional representation system, subject to approval by

referendum. Surprisingly, the Liberals, the same party that was elected on the promise of abolishing FPTP in favour of making every vote count, are now rejecting the recommendations of the committee that they themselves struck. The Liberals are declaring that they will not reform the electoral system at all. All who thought that the Conservatives would lead the obstruction of reform were mistaken, myself included. Surprise is not the only irony that relates these two events. Not many observers would think that Donald Trump and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau are likely to be natural allies or friends on the world stage. Nor would Trump be admired by rank-and-file Liberals. So why are Liberals breaking their promise to abolish the same electoral system from Canada that enabled the election of Trump in the U.S.?

The U.S. presidential system is distinct from Canada’s parliamentary system, where prime ministers are not elected by an Electoral College (though they are chosen by parliament). However, as Canada witnessed in 1979 and as the U.S. witnessed in the presidential election of 2016, the FPTP system allows candidates and parties who did not win the popular vote to win office. Donald Trump lost the popular American vote to Hillary Clinton by roughly 2.8 million votes, receiving 46.1% of the vote versus Clinton’s 48.2%. In three pivotal swing states, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania, Trump won the state plurality by only tens of thousands of votes. To boot, the alleged Russian hacking and leaking of Democrat emails and the FBI’s interference conceivably could have accounted

for this narrow lead of victory. Trump’s election was not the result of a popular uprising as much as a freak accident of FPTP. This is the kind of outcome possible in a system where ridings in which candidates who win super-majorities are no more represented than ridings in which candidates win narrow pluralities. Clinton lost the election because too many Democrat voters were living in “safe” states while not enough of them were living in “swing” states. If Canada ever elects its own version of Donald Trump under our FPTP system, Canadians will be able to thank the Liberals. Their broken promises will be their shame to bear.

and feeds foxes or releases mice in front of owls to entice them to approach more closely. The latter activity is called “baiting” and I am not alone in having real problems with that activity. Owls and foxes are not like chickadees with which we can interact without affecting their behaviour. Feeding predators makes them lose their natural fear of humans. Baiting wild birds of prey can even get them killed: Great Gray Owls have been hit by cars as they flew across roads toward live bait. Also, there is the point that releasing non-native animals (pet store mice) into the wild is not legal. I’m not saying that I am holier than anyone else who owns a camera. But I do have a profound respect for (and wellfounded knowledge of) all things wild, and do my utmost to avoid disturbing them or affecting their environment when taking photographs. Not everyone gives wildlife their due respect, and digital photography has created new and significant problems for them. Tabbert new president of Renfrew County NFU The president, vice-president and directors changed for the Renfrew County National Farmers Union following the Monday, March 6 annual general meeting at the Barr Line Community Centre. Prior to the election of officers, Chris Wooding of Ironwood Organics near Gananoque was the guest speaker. He spoke to a small crowd, due to the inclement weather, about direct marketing gardening. Following a 40-minute presentation, Wooding answered a few questions. Tony Straathof stepped down after four years as the local’s leader. “Thank you to all the members, especially the executive, for all your hard work,” he said, adding, “It’s made being the president easier.”

Throughout the four years, Straathof has dealt with many issues, locally, provincially and nationally. He was elected to the provincial board and the national board. While he may no longer be the local president, he remains a member of the national board, having been re-elected to the board at the provincial annual general meeting held in Ridgetown this past weekend. All positions for the local executive were acclaimed. Tim Tabbert moved up to president and Patrick Carter is now the vice-president. Directors are Marshall Buchanan, Bruce Karlstrom, Dave Mackay and Straathof. Daniel Stermach is the youth adviser and Lauretta Rice is the women’s adviser.

Tabbert reminds members they can attend each monthly meeting, which is at the Barr Line Community Centre the first Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m. Meetings are also open to the public and are all to participate in discussions, they just cannot vote on

Staff who reached a milestone of 10, 20, 25 or 35 years of service at Family and Children´s Services of Renfrew County (FCSRC) were honoured by their fellow colleagues in a ceremony full of fellowship, anecdotes and appreciation for their long term work in the organization. At the ceremony in January, 11 members of FCSRC were congratulated for their commitment to their work and received accolades from another staff member highlighting their contributions to the community, as well as the unique characteristics that make them valuable and important for the service delivery: commitment, inclusiveness, imagination, ability to keep calm in difficult situations, creativity and sense of humor, among others, where the features most mentioned during the meeting. One of the celebrated was manager of developmental services, Marianne Taylor, for her 35 years of work. Taylor, a graduate in Social Science at the University of Ottawa, started at 1981 as an adult protection service worker, before FCSRC evolved into a multi-services agency. She has, therefore, seen many changes during the years. “When I started working it was legal to pay women less for the same job and there was no maternity leave. Today we have equal opportu-

nities,” she said. Taylor added that the paradigm of work with vulnerable people has also changed for the better. “In the past, the majority lived inside a facility or institution, now we bring them out to be part of the community”, she explained, adding that she is very proud of the work done in the county, which has proven to be more successful and a model for bigger urban centers,” she said. Another member of the staff with a long history in service is Ann Hubert, an administrative assistant who was recognized for her 25 years of work. She started at the agency as a part-time receptionist and since then she had evolved into recruiting foster parents and adoption disclosure. “I really love my job. At FCSRC everyone I work with is a friend, from the bottom to the top,” said Hubert. Susan Kirk, supervisor of behaviour and speech, was also recognized for her 25 years of work, while resource worker Rhonda Summers celebrated 20 years at FCSRC. Tracey Laichalk from school services, behaviour consultants Lainey McCaffrey and Sarah McGrath-Swant, resource worker Cynthia Racine, supervisor of the adolescent team Michael Dalton, Steven West from school services and adoption worker Sabrina Clemmer were all recognized for their 10 years of service at FCSRC.

12 The Renfrew Mercury - Thursday, March 23, 2017

Walk across England on March As the warm weather arrives, those who enjoy a good walk and those who enjoy photos of a good walk are invited to a couple of events, both sponsored by Renfrew’s own Padakun Centre for Contemplative Walking. Last September, the four “intrepids” -- Judy LeClair and Padakun founder Innen Ray Parchelo, from Renfrew, and Doug and Pauline Hewitt-White from Almonte — decided to walk the public walking paths of England. Now they are presenting a free public slide show and lecture which documents this. They visited three of the most popular walking areas: Devon, in the Southwest; the Yorkshire Dales, which lies along “the spine of England” near Manchester; and the romantic Lakes District near the Scottish border. They stayed in rural cottages and spent each day hiking a different trail in some of the finest National Trust sites, from forest and field, hills and oceans. This hour-long show, co-sponsored by Pada-

kun and The Renfrew Public Library, will present highlights from their trip, narrated by Ray and Doug. It will be held at the Renfrew Public Library at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 29. To make the experience even more English, the Bonnechere Bakery will offer tea and scones while you enjoy the hundreds of scenes of the English countryside. All of this for the price of $2. To reserve your seat and scone, call the library at 432-8151. Serious walkers know that a pilgrimage is one of the biggest challenges any walker can attempt. The Camino de Santiago in Spain, the Shikoku in Japan, and even in Renfrew, the annual Pilgrimage to the Shrine of St. Ann in Cormac bring out thousands of people who recognize the combined value of walking and spirituality. Padakun is hosting a half-day workshop, which will explore this ancient and modern tradition. The event combines meditation, discussion and, of course, walking, as it tries to teach

and examine an activity growing in popularity lowed), from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The cost is $35 among religious people everywhere. and includes lunch and snacks. The event will be held at the Red Maple CenTo reserve your place, contact Innen Ray tre in Renfrew on Saturday, April 1 (no jokes al- Parchelo at 433-9405 or ray@padakun.com

Renfrew Duplicate Bridge Club

Ten and one-half tables of intrepid players scoffed at inclement weather March 15 to enjoy weekly duplicate bridge at Ma-Te-Way Activity Centre. The afternoon game saw four successful small slams, all of which were contracts of six hearts. The formidable Pembroke team of Leanne Cheliak and Rick Duncan occupied the winner’s circle with two of the small slams as well as a first place East-West finish. The Ellen Penney/ Jane Wilson team and the Bernadette/ Tom Culhane pair brought home the small slam in hearts as well. Kudos to all three pairs. In the Chalk Talk preceding start of regular play, Wayne Daze put players’ skills to the test with two challenging layouts. In one hand, a weak opening of two hearts discourages the opposition from bidding a slam dunk six clubs. In another hand, a seemingly cold three no trump runs into big trouble. Congratulations to the March 15 winners: North – South 1. Phillippa Baran and Nancy Cavanagh 2.Bob Bouchard and Garry Irving 3.Gwen Latendresse and Marcel Marsan

East – West 1. Leanne Cheliak and Rick Duncan 2. Bernadette Culhane and Tom Culhane 3. Phyllis Brennan and Reg Gatenby Happy Birthday Canada Invitation In 2017, Canada is celebrating the 150th anniversary of Confederation. Across the country, organizations and communities are planning how to celebrate this major national milestone. Renfrew’s two bridge clubs send out a special invitation to all bridge players to join them for the historic birthday. The goal of the two clubs is to hold a fun-filled day of bridge during which at least 150 participants can enjoy a day of fellowship and celebration. The event will offer Duplicate (ACBL sanctioned) and Contract Bridge at both morning and afternoon sessions. Registration in advance is required. The clubs hope that you and your bridge partner can help make this happen. Red and white attire is suggested for the day. When: Wednesday, June 28, 2017 Where: Ma-Te-Way Activity Centre. Renfrew. Time: Session One: 9 a.m., lunch: 12 noon; Session Two: 1 p.m. Cost: $15 for the day. Participants may play in one or both sessions. Mary gives some insight into her stories: Did they really exist? Hardly a day goes by that an email doesn’t arrive asking about the people appearing in my stories. The most common question is: “Did they really exist?” “Was there really a Cecil? And what about bad Marguirite and Ronny?” After talking with my editor at this paper, we thought it was time to deviate from my usual story line and enlighten our readers about the people who have become familiar over the years. Needless to say, I won’t be able to write about all of them, but I will try to work in as many as I can in the space I am allowed. Of course, there was my mother and father. And my sister Audrey and brothers Emerson and Everett — and although Earl was really a cousin who came to live with us when his mother and father died at an early age, he was always considered a brother, and is referred to in my stories as one of my three brothers. Aunt Lizzie, Aunt Freda, Uncle Henry, Aunt Vanetta, Aunt Lil, Uncle Lou and cousins Richard, Terry and Ronny were all very real. Sadly, Terry is the only one left. Velma and Joyce were indeed my very best friends at the Northcote School, and we kept in touch right up until their deaths. In fact, both were able to recall for me many happenings

Mary Cook’s Memories MARY COOK

I had long since forgotten, and I was able to create a host of stories based on their memories. Now, what about Cecil? He is one I am so often asked about. Did he really exist? Was he the scamp I made him out to be? Last year, while making a speech up in the Valley, someone in the audience asked that very question. I pointed to a young man sitting a few tables away and introduced Cecil’s son, Richard, who had come to the event that evening. He agreed his father Cecil was indeed a jokester who liked nothing better than to cause a bit of a stir. Incidentally, one of Cecil’s granddaughters, Janet, works in one of my favourite restaurants in Arnprior. So yes indeed, Cecil did exist. The Northcote School still stands on the Rink Road off Highway 60 between Renfrew and Douglas, and now serves as a community centre. Bris-

coe’s General Store is still standing, but alas, no longer exists as a stopping place. Our old farm is up the road from that store, but sadly, the only thing left is the barn, which can be seen far off in the distance. Miss Crosby did indeed exist, but with another name. It is my understanding that on her death bed, a few of her last words were, “Don’t let Mary Cook put my name in her books.” So, she became Miss Crosby, and will remain Miss Crosby. The stores I write about in the town of Renfrew remained a vibrant part of the town for decades after we left the farm. Most old-timers remember them, and when I visit Renfrew, I see the places where those stores were on Raglan Street — and in my mind’s eye I see the Dime Store, as we called it, and the O’Brien Theatre, still there. There really was a Dr. Murphy. And he really did make house calls out in the country and was often paid with a couple of chickens or a bag of potatoes if the patient didn’t have the $2 he charged for the trip. Now, what about bad Marguirite? Well, I am not stupid enough to call her by her right name, and she really is a composite of all the bad little girls I went to school with when I was a youngster. I appreciate very much all the feedback I get from readers, and I try to

answer every email and letter personally. That is, if my computer behaves. I admit, this new technology is not my strong suit, and often I lose a letter before I have a chance to respond. I urge those who may have yet to hear back from me to please write again. Hopefully, this column will have answered your questions about some of the people in my stories, and it has given me the opportunity to thank all

of you who have written your appreciation to me over the many years this column has appeared in your weekly paper. Interested in an electronic version of Mary’s books? Go to https://www. smashwords.com and type MaryRCook for ebook purchase details, or if you would like a hard copy, please contact Mary at wick2@sympatico.ca.

Jags win county championship

The St. Joseph’s Catholic High School (SJHS) senior girls volleyball team had great success in the Upper Ottawa Valley High School Athletic Association (UOVHSAA) volleyball season. They ended regular season play in second place with an 8-1 record. This allowed the ladies to host the county playoffs at SJHS against the fourth place Arnprior Redmen and fifth place Renfrew Collegiate Institute Raiders. SJHS advanced to the county finals after beating the Redmen 3-1 and the Raiders 3-1. At the county finals the ladies struggled in the semifinal game against Mackenzie Mustangs but eventually ended up victorious with a score of 3-2. This set the stage for a battle against the undefeated Fellowes Falcons. After winning the first two games the Jaguar ladies felt very confident with their wins of 25-22 and 26-24. They dug deep and ended up beating the Falcons 25-11 in the third set to sweep the home crowd favourites in three straight. They were proud to be crowned the new county champs and be the representatives of the county at the Eastern Ontario Secondary School Athletics Association championship tournament held in Kemptville on Feb. 23. At EOSSAA, the SJHS gals dropped their first match to host St. Michael Secondary School, 23-25 and 24-26, but rebounded with convincing wins against Granite Ridge with scores of 25-8, and 25- 11. In the semi-final match the Jaguars battled hard against the number one seeded Carleton Place and ended up splitting the first two sets 22-25 and 26-24. Unfortunately, the energy gave way in the third and final set, with the Jaguars coming out on the losing side by a score of 15- 8. “It was an excellent season and the girls did a fantastic job of representing their school and their county,” said a recent press release. “They are already looking forward to next year! A heartfelt congratulations to such a gifted group of young ladies, and a huge thank you to assistant coach Bernie Sul and bench coach Dave Dobson for their amazing support and expertise.”

Fishenden over the Yolkowskie team and taking the D were the Mann clan. With the Low Cup up for grabs on the final day, Renfrew travelled to Pembroke to take on Deep River nursing a smaller lead than they would have liked. However, two wins in the morning sealed the deal and assured an enjoyable lunch and a relaxed afternoon. The team of Dave Eady, Andy Miller, Jim Berg and Bernie Leclaire won Game 1, 10-8 and Game 2, 8-3 The Rob Warren foursome with Don Rouble, Joe Kasaboski and Andy Humphries won 7-4 and then stole their way back to tie 4-4 after being down 4-1 after five. Arnprior won three of four games against Pembroke to overtake Deep River and so the final standings read: Renfrew (369.5) — Pembroke (333.5) — Arnprior (274) — Deep River (270.5). Congratulations to all the men who played in the Low Cup and helped Renfrew win its fourth cup in a row and 18 of the last 20. The Monday Night Open was once again a battle with the team of Garry Smith, Dave Eady, Rory McKay and Jim Berg narrowly edging the Yolkowskie crew for the A title while Bill Bowles, Don Rouble, Pam McFarlane and Tom Carrol won the B with the Westgarth rink taking second.

New CCHL2 team coming to Ottawa Valley Tiffany Lepack tlepack@metroland.com

Cobden didn’t make it to the Kraft Hockeyville top two but junior hockey is most likely coming to the small community. The Pembroke Lumber Kings of the Central Canada Hockey League (CCHL) have purchased the Prescott Flyers of the Central Canada Tier 2 Hockey League (CCHL2) and the Flyers will be relocated closer to Pembroke for the 2017/2018 season. The announcement was made on the team’s Facebook page on March 16. “Cobden is the first choice,” said Dale McTavish, president and general manager of the Lumber Kings. McTavish stressed they are still working out the details and it is not yet confirmed where the team will be other than somewhere in the Township of Whitewater Region. “We are really looking forward to it. We have been trying to get a team for the last

two years. We are really excited,” said McTavish. Kevin Abrams, commissioner of the CCHL, thinks it is a great move. “Particularly for kids in the Upper Ottawa Valley, it’s another opportunity to play Jr. B,” said Abrams. Abrams admits there was some congestion in Prescott as there was a number of teams in the area. Their board approved the sale of the team 15-1. “I’m happy he purchased the team, whenever someone wants to sell and there is a buyer, it’s a happy situation.” The Lumber Kings of the CCHL will now have a new CCHL2 close by in addition to their under-18 team. “It will be a true club system. Hopefully they move up with the goal of making the Jr. A team,” said McTavish. “It gives the Jr. A team access to 23 more players. It gives them a chance to develop.”

McTavish admits that most teams want to have three teams in their system and he is happy they will finally be able to get it. “It’s a lot of work but it will be fun,” said McTavish. Abrams agrees with the club system and says it is already in place with Brockville and Smiths Falls in the CCHL. “It’s a much clearer and simpler path to move up and that’s certainly good,” said Abrams. “For those teams it’s really good, they know it’s a soft landing, a stepping-stone, that’s good. Every kid should have a level to play at that is at their level.” McTavish says the new team will also plan to have two practices a week. “We will really focus on development,” said McTavish. “We plan to have some players practice with the Lumber Kings and practice with CCHL2.” As to development, the CCHL Bantam draft is set for April 11 in Navan. Impressive season

It was a good season for St. Joseph’s High School Renfrew’s junior boys’ team as they finished in the county final game with a narrow loss to Fellowes High School. in an exciting seesaw battle that ended within a basket at 51 to 49 for Fellowes. While the counties were complete, St. Joe’s moved on to compete in EOSSA play in Perth on Feb. 22. The junior boys, which includes Arnprior players, performed well by upsetting the second ranked Rideau High School. In the finals however, they encountered a very motivated and practiced team in the Perth juniors. Perth started hard and rang up a strong 20-point lead. While St. Joe’s rallied a number of times throughout the game, they were hard pressed to eliminate that lead. St. Joe’s headed home sporting silver medals for their efforts and a lot of respect from their competitors. The team is, from top left: coach Kelsey LaPlante, Ben Whittington, Tait McIntyre, Brynn O’Neil, Kolby Lister, Damian Wierzbicki, Tyler Blackburn, Coach Anne Briscoe, Senior Student Coach J.P. Cassanto. Bottom left to right: Liam Retty, Colton Charbonneau, Joel Ryan, Nolan McGregor, Mark Troutman, Malachi Johnson, Andrew MaCaskill. Missing from the photo is Lucas Crozier.

THIS WEEK’S PUZZLE ANSWERS IN NEXT WEEKS ISSUE.

sudoku

Barsaeinrs

horoscopes

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
