GRAND ROUNDS
Currently there are eight volunteers in the program, including a few former RVH staff members, who are on site five days a week, Monday to Friday, from 8 to 12 and 1 to 4. New volunteers are always welcome, notes Urbaitis.
The volunteers are identifiable by their blue RVH smocks and RVH ID badges, and have all completed police background checks.
A new league of RVH volunteers is at your assistance If you have an appointment for an ultrasound, an x-ray, or are attending a diabetes education clinic and don’t know your way, fear not—RVH ambassadors are here to assist you! As part of a Best Practice Spotlight Organization (BPSO) initiative to increase visibility of volunteers, our newest volunteers have been providing a presence, meeting and greeting visitors to RVH since August 2016. “The role is really key to enhancing the hospital experience. It means a lot to people to be greeted by a friendly face,” says Ann Marie Urbaitis, coordinator of the program.
The volunteers agree that what they do makes a difference, especially for people who arrive feeling stressed about a medical appointment, confused about where they need to be, and unsure how to get there. Volunteer Pam Mitchell says their presence helps to “put people at ease.” “I enjoy doing it. You really feel appreciated by those you help,” adds Deedee Lepine, “And we meet so many people.” The group works from a kiosk currently located inside the clinic doors, although other entrances are being tested to ensure a safe and effective placement to help the most people.
RVH’s new volunteer ambassadors are the first friendly face when you enter RVH. Members of the team include: Catherine Robinson, Sadie Smith, Deedee Lepine, Lorna Finner, Pam Mitchell and Ann Marie Urbaitis. Missing are Barbara Carrier, Barbara Roy and Patty Noland.

March 24 at town hall, officials launched a line of t-shirts, hoodies, hats and more with the unique Valley slogan. The final version of the events poster was also presented. “We’re really excited, said Renfrew Coun. Tom Sidney. The items include a collector’s set of mugs. The first mug features a photo of Renfrew’s main street in 1924. “So a new mug is coming out every month with a historical photo, said Sidney. “And then we’ll be having a bonus mug in July – a special Canada Day one. And then a special Christmas one. The idea is to give residents and visitors a unique way to remember Canada’s 150. “By December, you’ll have a collection of 12, he said. “And after that, we’re not printing any more. The merchandise pre-sale is Saturday, April 1 at Personalize It, when the tickets for the special May 13 Canada 150 Northern Pikes concert, go on sale. “We’re going to have a barbecue and all these items will be available for purchase at that time, said Sidney. Then, beginning Monday, April 3, Flower Factory on Raglan Street will have the gear for sale. There will be displays at the Renfrew Recreation Centre and at town hall. “All the proceeds from this go back into the Canada 150 celebrations, said Sidney. “So the

on the budget. “This was a very, very, tough year for taxation, but I think we have come through with a 2.5 per cent (increase), which is a good thing we can do for the people of the Town of Renfrew, said Eady. Reeve Peter Emon called it structurally a good budget. “Structurally we have some good things put in this budget, it’s not glamorous but they speak well for the future, said Emon. Coun. Kate Windle asked before the next budget to host a public meeting of all of the facilities to see how much they will cost to keep or sell. “The Town of Renfrew continues to grow, although, sadly, at a snail’s pace. We are known as a friendly and affordable place to live, work and play but we must continue our team efforts, if we are going to grow our community, said Windle. “Thank you to the finance committee and to all of our staff for bringing us a 2017 budget that hopefully, the majority can live with. Treasurer Keray O’Reilly explained the process started in September, things were finalized end of January. “Which they did, when we met last week, I revised the paperwork. The ultimate draft budget for 2017 will show taxation levy for the municipality of just over $8 million or an increase of 2.5 per cent over the 2016 levy, said
O’Reilly. The library will get $438,035 an increase of 3.24 per cent. The McDougall Mill Museum will receive $35,900. The only line item that caused heated discussion was whether to give the NHA/NHL Birthplace Museum $8,000. Coun. Andrew Evans made a passionate plea to increase the amount to $15,000, which is what the museum asked for in December. “Unfortunately giving them $8,000 falls well below what they asked for,â€? said Evans. “It is a must-have in our town to visit. It is something the town should really rally behind; I feel if we don’t fund this we will lose it. I sincerely wish we look at this and if it is available and in our hearts to give them the $15,000, please and thank you.â€? Eady said there is absolutely no question that it is a valuable asset to the town but the timing was off for the request. “I wish you would of brought this to finance committee, secondly to committee of the whole when we had full discussion on it, I don’t feel this is the place to discuss it, right now,â€? said Eady. “It has been approved at the committee of the whole, we’ve had a lot of discussion on this subject and we have talked endless hours about the NHA/NHL museum and how we can work together with them to become joint partners in a sense ‌ I
think if we want to reconsider it can be taken back to the finance committee for reconsideration, other than we have four votes at the table tonight to consider it I’ll turn it over to council. Evans made a motion that schedule ‘C’ be amended to reflect a grant to the NHA/NHL Museum in the amount of $15,000 and that this item be tabled for additional debate and recommendation by the finance committee. The motion was supported/seconded by Emon, which was approved by council to be discussed at the next finance committee meeting, which has not yet been set. Rob Barker, NHA/NHL museum board member, says their mandate is to help the town grow and increase tourism, he was pleased with the motion. “We are excited that Coun. Evans spoke and that they are willing to take another look at it, said Barker. “We have a great group of community volunteers and board members that want to bring some exciting events to town and generate interest in both the museum and our community. But like so many other things we need financial resources from the town to be able to do this. Barker notes the $15,000 will help them plan a big event for 2017. The full tax rate will be set in May after Renfrew County and the local school boards set their rates.

Fire erupts following Hwy. 17 accident west of Renfrew DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com
A two-vehicle accident on Highway 17 at Storyland Road diverted traffic during the early afternoon of March 21. A dark coloured halfton truck was engulfed in flames. The smoke could be seen for kilometres around. It came to rest in the eastbound ditch, just south of Storyland Road. The silver SUV was just off to the side of the road, its driver-side front end crushed like an accordion. Just before 1 p.m. at least one ambulance had been on the scene. Firefighters from a pumper truck were spray-
ing down the truck. Others attempted to lift the SUV’s hood. Several police vehicles were on scene, another was diverting traffic down the highway at Castleford Road. Highway 17 remained closed in both directions between Haley Road and Bruce Street until almost 1:30 p.m. The 89-year-old male driver of the truck, from James Anderson/submitted Horton township, was The truck fire could be seen from far and wide. charged with “improper left turn” when his west-bound There were no serious in- Janice Sawbridge said. “It vehicle clipped the other. New role and equipment for town On March 14, the Town of Renfrew approved a new, permanent, full-time position for the recreation/facilities co-ordinator. The position has been filled on a contract basis for the past three years with the costs associated with the position being covered in part by provincial grants. “The position has existed for years, it will be a big help, its great foresight to implement this,” said Coun. Mike Coulas. Coun. Tom Sidney, who is the chair of the recreation committee, praised the work of the recreation department and all they do. “They do phenomenal work and are maxed out with their hours. We don’t want to go backwards we want to keep going in a positive direction,” said Sidney on their level of service. New equipment The Renfrew Fire Department is set to get some much-needed equipment. Council approved the purchase of replacement extrication equipment from Code 4 Rescue at a cost of $46,885 plus taxes.
The department is a member of the County Rescue committee and provides vehicle extrication services to other departments within the county. They have been providing extrication services since 1985 when the equipment was purchased by a grant at the time, unfortunately that grant money is no longer available. Fire Chief Guy Longtin also noted it is hard to buy replacement parts for the current equipment as they no longer make them.

Never enough hockey The Stanley Cup has been sighted in Ottawa. No the Senators haven’t yet grasped hockey’s holy grail, but the mug has been touring the town. And just over a year ago it was sighted in downtown Renfrew as the Birthplace NHA/ NHL Museum brought the coveted trophy to town. The museum also has three items at the Canadian Museum of History as the new exhibit in Quebec marks 100 years of the NHL and 125 years since Lord Stanley gifted the Cup to hockey champions. It’s a sign of the passion Valley folk feel for Stanley. That love of hockey glory runs deep. You can see it in the eyes of the Arnprior Packers as they lost game seven of their first round playoff series to the Richmond Royals last week. Or it was truly evident in the dedication of many volunteers who were trying to bring hockey glory to Cobden as they made the top 10 in the Kraft Hockeyville contest. The love of hockey and Stanley runs from coast-to-cost, from big city Ottawa to small town Arnprior and Renfrew. To see it people will travel near and far. Rideau Hall hosted the Cup during March break and the lineups to have photos taken with
the famous silverware snaked through the old building’s hallways. No one seemed to mind the wait, and the hockey fans there were giddy when they reached the front of the line and got a chance to touch a piece of history. The Cup also visited the site of a future permanent monument to the trophy at Sparks and Elgin streets. Some NHL greats and the Governor General were on hand to break ground at the site last week. The city’s residents and visitors will soon be able to mug for photos with a replica of the Stanley Cup. More passion. And in the coming weeks we’ll enjoy the lateseason drama of the NHL and get behind our Ottawa Senators run to the playoffs. Bars will fill up. Elgin Street will turn red – the colour of passion. After we enjoy our warmer months and the nation’s 150th birthday celebrations, we’ll be able to slap on toques and mittens to watch those same Sens take on the rival Montreal Canadiens at TD Place. Stanley will no doubt be there on Dec. 16 too, as the NHL’s first game – played between Ottawa and Montreal in Ottawa on Dec. 19, 1917 – is celebrated. It’s true, despite having just made it through one winter, many will be looking forward to the next one. Yes, we’re just a little hockey crazy.
Help fight cancer in Daffodil Month To the editor:
When loved ones are diagnosed with or die of cancer, friends and family often want to do something to help or honour them. This April, the Canadian Cancer Society wants the people of Renfrew County to know there is something you can do. This April, by volunteering just a few hours of your time selling daffodil pins or canvassing your neighbourhood in support of the Daffodil Month campaign, local residents can help save lives and support people who are living with cancer. Money raised during Daffodil Month helps local patients and their families living with more than 100 different types of cancer. With
these donations, the Canadian Cancer Society funds life-saving research and support services, as well as other important work, so that fewer Canadians are affected by cancer. Volunteers are essential to the success of the Daffodil Month campaign. We need you! If you can spare a few hours during this critical fundraising time, please call our office at 613-7352571. If you are unable to volunteer, you can still join the fight this April by donating money and wearing a daffodil pin in support of Daffodil Month. Defensive strategies focus of talk MIKE NAGRODSKI Renfrew Duplicate Bridge Club
The bright sun certainly encouraged the bridge players to come out on March 22. There were 12 full tables of players vying for top honours. Wayne Daze led the day off with his Chalk Talk. He had attended a workshop on defensive strategies and he was keen to pass the info along to the Renfrew players. Wayne discussed the difference between passive and aggressive leads and stressed that,

Girls' Night Out on April 7 at RCAF Wing TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com
Girls just want to have fun! And what better way to have fun than getting out with the girls. The 10th annual Girls’ Night out is set for Friday, April 7 at the RCAF Wing at 164 Argyle St. South, Renfrew. Karen Clemow and Terri-Lee Cameron organize the popular event, and they are looking forward to marking a decade with the show. “I can’t believe it’s the 10th year. Terri-Lee and I keep looking back on the first event. It was such a unique idea at the time, and now it’s getting better each year. We just wanted something for the direct sales businesses to show their products,” Clemow said in an email statement. “We truly thought the novelty would wear off and we would only do it a couple of years but each year more and more come and everyone keeps asking.” The two are still firming up a sur-
prise for the 10th anniversary, so the ladies will just have to wait and see. The event is set to run from 5 to 10 p.m. with free admission. Clemow isn’t quite sure why the event is so popular, and notes they get more than 950 ladies over the fivehour event. “I think more and more women ‘need’ something that is just ‘theirs.’ Some time just for them, shopping, laughing, seeing all the neat things that are out there for ‘them.’ And it doesn’t cost a thing to come out and look and maybe win a nice prize,” said Clemow. “When Terri-Lee and I decided it would be an only women’s event we figured it would just be something that men wouldn’t enjoy, and if they came with the women they would rush them through, not give them time to chat and see and spend some time.” Organizers ask for no children as ladies are set to enjoy an evening dedicated to women. “It’s not an event that any child would enjoy and by not allowing children in the door will force women to
spend time for themselves or with their friends,” said Clemow. “We women give so much day after day, at work, at home for our families, and this little five hour period is just for them.” There are 65 vendors represented at the event. “We have many businesses that have been showcasing from the very first event, and this year we have many new businesses wanting to participate. We are getting calls from Ottawa and all up the valley,” said Clemow. “We only have room for 65 tables and we usually have a waiting list. There will be everything from leggings, candles, makeup, soaps, garlic, tattoo and piercings, clothing, home decor, bedding, chocolate, purses, kitchen gadgets, exercise information. The canteen and bar will be open, as well.” For more information, contact Clemow (613-432-9528) or Terri-Lee Cameron (613-433-2036).

a triangular projection called the “spur.” During aggressive interactions, the males violently kick at each, trying to slice the other with their blades. During an aggressive interaction, a male wild turkey will use its beak to grab the back of an opponent’s neck and try to force its head to the ground. Before an interaction escalates to this level, however, there are some interesting visual signals that are given. A weird fleshy protuberance, the snood, arises from the forehead and hangs over a male’s bill. Usually this structure is relatively short and colourless but when its owner is aroused, it fills with blood and stretches out, becoming bright red as it lengthens. A losing combatant signals defeat by retracting its snood, which quickly loses its bright colour as the blood drains out of it. When winter’s chill finally departs our area for good, wild turkey courtship will begin in earnest. At that time dominance-sorting contests will have greater meaning and fights may become more serious. Perhaps you soon might witness aggressive intent in your own “neighbour’s snood!” The Nature email is mruntz@start.ca

Funds needed to sustain Hospice Renfrew, annual hike set for May 7 TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com
Hospice Renfrew needs funds to sustain its services in town. One way the community can support this vital asset is to lace up their shoes for the annual Hike for Hospice Palliative Care on Sunday, May 7 at Ma-Te-Way Park. Maureen Sullivan-Bentz, executive director for Hospice Renfrew and new board member Jamie Cybulski recently presented to Renfrew council
on its need for more funds. Its annual operating budget is about $1.3 million and the Ministry of Health funds 50 per cent of its costs. “That means every year we need to raise $600,000 to support operational costs … All fundraised dollars go towards supporting day-to-day operations and are used for our very survival, unlike other health care organization foundations that use these dollars to generate growth,” said Sullivan-Bentz. “Even with all of our fundraising efforts and with the tremendous support from our com-
munity the stark reality is Hospice Renfrew falls short in our fundraising goals every year by between $200 and $300,000.” To make up for the shortfall the organization has been drawing on its sustainability fund every year. “It is anticipated that this will be depleted within two years. This is why growing our hike with wider spread participation from our entire community is so important to the Town of Renfrew and hospice,” said SullivanBentz. The hospice has six beds, with two full time staff and they serve all of Renfrew County, which is 90,000 people, Sullivan-Bentz, explained to council after a number of questions on their level of service. “We depend on fundraising dollars,” she added. They recently needed to have a new coat of paint applied inside the building, which the nurses did on their own time along with 7,000 volunteer hours in 2016. Cybulski says last year the hike "blew up" as they raised close to $100,000. “We want to keep it going. The problem with that is we are trying to get attention and make a spectacle,” said Cybulski. Heritage Week at Renfrew Victoria Hospital Renfrew Victoria Hospital celebrates Heritage Week every year with the patients on the Continuing Care Unit. They invite the Grade 3 students from Our Lady of Fatima School to come to the hospital and participate with the patients in bread making, quilting and making of beavertails. The two classes came on two different days in order to accommodate the number. Hospital volunteers lead the activities. Teresa Connaughan not only led a hands on demonstration in the art of making bread, she also made 40 mini loaves for the students to take home and enjoy with their families.
The patients enjoyed the large loaves with their Breakfast Group program. Jane Gaul had the students and patients make their own beavertails from scratch, roll out the beavertail and at the end of the activity everyone enjoyed the fried treat. Connie Rouble and Bernie Larocque taught students and patients how to quilt a shamrock onto a fabric coaster. They brought their finished product home with them. Roxanne Nolan organized the two days and was happy to see how much the students enjoyed learning these activities of old and how the patients enjoyed the enthusiasm and the interest of the students.

New Hospice route for walk From page 12
To achieve that they have changed both the 3-km walk and 5-km run to go partially downtown, which starts at Ma-Te-Way Activity Park. She praised the town which she said was instrumental in securing the land and supports them financially and lets them use the park at no cost. After the presentation Mayor Don Eady spoke very highly of Hospice Renfrew. “You can’t say enough about them, I think the questions that went around there tonight, really explained what they do,” said Eady. He emphasized they don’t just provide services to Renfrew, but the entire county as well. “Before Hospice was here people had to go to a hospital setting. Having that as a separate unit is more of a family orientated type atmosphere where you go into there and it doesn’t have to be only two people,” said Eady. “It’s the whole atmosphere and it’s a huge asset to the Town of Renfrew and a big, big part of our Renfrew and Area Health Services Village.” Cybulski is also hosting A Fun Night of Trivia in support of Hospice Renfrew on April 5 at the Renfrew legion. Teams of four cost of $15 per person. Doors open at 6 p.m. and trivia will get underway at 7 p.m. For more information email Jamie@mbcmedia.ca.
House had to be properly prepared for Miss Crosby’s weekend stay MARY COOK Mary Cook’s Memories
It was our turn. We had been anticipating the weekend for months. And now it was finally here. Our beloved teacher would be coming home with us on Friday and staying until Father took us back to school on Monday morning. There were very few families who weren’t given the privilege of having Miss Crosby stay over. Rich or poor, it was considered an honour to play host to the teacher once a year. And now, finally, she would be coming to spend the time with us. This meant, of course, the house would have to be cleaned from top to bottom, even the places where Miss Crosby wouldn’t be going near. Like the back bedroom where the three brothers slept. But it too had to be scrubbed, and like the other beds, even though it wasn’t wash day until Monday, the sheets were changed right through the house. And the meals! What feasts were planned by Mother! Fresh apple and raisin pies were on the bake table, freshly baked bread filled the bread box, sticky buns were in the warming closet over the Findlay Oval, and our best dishes, the only ones that matched and came from puffed wheat bags from Briscoe’s General Store, were washed and dried, just in case a fleck of dust was on any of them since they were last used. Of course, the red-checked oil cloth was taken off the table, rolled on a broom stick, and tucked
under Mother and Father’s bed, and the white linen tablecloth Mother had brought from New York was freshly washed and ironed, with its matching napkins to be placed beside each plate. Father thought all the fussing was crazy. “She’s just from the farm like the rest of us,” he said. But Mother paid him no heed, and we five kids agreed with her. Having Miss Crosby for a weekend was very special indeed. There would be no walking home from school that Friday. Father would bring the flat bottom sleigh with the one seat at the front where he and Miss Crosby would sit, while we kids clung to the back. And that day there would be no changing in our play clothes when we came home from school. We would stay dressed in what we had worn that morning, with the brothers pulling on bib-overalls over top to do the chores. Supper would be ready early and it would be ample. Roast pork, creamed potatoes, at least two vegetables, cabbage salad, and homemade pickles filled the table, hardly leaving enough room for our plates, and the little glass rack that held our spoons in the centre, which was only used when we had company. Often the teacher was treated to a Saturday night house party and she joined right in with euchre and the kitchen square dance. And of course, Sunday, the highlight of the weekend, was when she came to church with the family. I had no idea what church she belonged to, but it wasn’t unusual to have her go to the United, the Anglican and the
Lutheran all in the space of a few weeks. Mother would pack her an ample lunch when it was time to go back to school on Monday morning. And I would see her tuck in a small jar of pickles or jam as well. When we settled in for our morning classes, you would never know that Miss Crosby had been with us all weekend. We got no special treatment, no mention was made of her visit, but I would feel the glow of those few days long into the week ahead.

I never knew how it was decided whose home the teacher would visit. Emerson said he thought everyone’s name was in a hat, and she drew one every week. Audrey said that was pure nonsense. I didn’t care how it was decided. The teacher coming for the weekend was right up there with a visit from the minister, the Reeve of the County at election time, or old Doctor Murphy just dropping in because he happened to be out our way.

Birthplace NHA/NHL Museum included in Museum of History exhibit TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com
As you walk the halls of the Canadian Museum of History in Quebec exploring its new exhibit ‘Hockey in Canada: More than just a game!’ you are overcome by the passion of a game that defines Canadians. The new exhibit marks 100 years of the National Hockey League, which started right here in Renfrew. One of the first displays is set up like a locker room and has racks of sticks, one of which was owned by Manon Rhéaume, the first female to play in the NHL. The place card beside it notes its history and that it had been borrowed from Renfrew’s Birthplace NHA/NHL Museum. The local museum has a total of three items in the special exhibit and is one of 48 museums/groups/people to lend items. The other two items are a Danny Gallivan Hockey Night in Canada jacket from the 1970/1980s and a mask from the Flying Fathers. Dr. Dean Oliver, director of research at the Canadian Museum of History, says the exhibit is more than
the history of the NHL but the sport itself, which is rooted in firm tradition. “We were delighted to borrow from our colleagues in Renfrew,” said Oliver in an email statement. “The exhibition’s main story is the relationship between Canadians and the sport of hockey, and how hockey for Canadians is so much more than ‘just a game.’ Each of the objects borrowed from Renfrew reflect this.” Jim Miller, executive director of the Birthplace NHA/NHL Museum, was contacted by the Canadian Museum of History two years ago about the exhibit and a representative also attended the Stanley Cup day in Renfrew last April. The goalie stick signed by Rheaumé was one of the first things the Renfrew museum purchased and the jacket and the goalie mask were donated to the museum. The museum owns two goalie masks from the Flying Fathers, who Miller describes as the Harlem Globetrotters of hockey. Tiffany Lepack/Metroland “They were from Calabogie and surJim Miller, executive director of the Birthplace NHA/NHL Museum holds rounding area and they raised millions a Flying Father mask, a similar one is now on display at the Museum of of dollars for charity,” said Miller. “They were not only good but very History in Quebec.
funny.” The team of priests and volunteers hit the ice between 1962 to 2009. “The Flying Fathers are part of all Canadians’ Hockey heritage, and one of the country’s most iconic cultural groups,” said Oliver. “Athletes, entertainers and fundraisers, they raised millions for charities while also bringing the joy of the sport into Canadian communities for decades.” Miller thinks its is wonderful that the NHA/NHL museum has partnered with the Museum of History, which will soon be going on tour across the country. “Our NHA/NHL Museum’s reputation is getting known across Canada by a major museum,” said Miller. “Quite frankly it adds creditability to our museum.” The new exhibit opened on March 10 with much fanfare and runs until Oct. 9. “Gary Bettman (commissioner of the NHL) was there for the opening, this is a really big museum,” said Miller. “It’s certainly nice to know we are part of the 100th anniversary of the NHL.”

RCI girls make final four
In February the Renfrew Collegiate Institute Varsity Girls Hockey team traveled to Petawawa to participate in the Final Four playoff round. They finished their season fourth in a nine-team division with a 3-3-1 record - enough for them to earn their first invitation in team history to the Final Four competition. The girls faced a first seeded Opeongo High School in their must win final. They played with tenacity, heart and determination coming up short of the win by only one goal, losing 2-1. A fantastic season and an exciting team. Player names: left to right, lying - Molly Bruce, second row: Cassey Gibbons, Morgan Virgin, Ashley Virgin, Brooke Congdon, third row: coach Pete Rose, Jasmine Asselin, Georgia Clemmer, Abby Delarge, Taylor Virgin, Emily Bellivue, Meagan Gilchrist, coach Kim Acres Scott and top row: Sydney Smart, Abbie Chunick and (lying) Meadow Congdon (goalie).
The Petawawa Atom Patriots want your support to win the Rogers Hometown Hockey Cheer Like Never Before Contest. Petawawa is one of the 24 regional winners competing at the national level across Canada to be crowned the 2017 Rogers “Cheer Like Never Before” contest winner. CARD OF THANKS
CARD OF THANKS
Card of Thanks In Memory of Robert ‘Bob’ Edwards We wish to express our heartfelt thanks to our family, friends and neighbours for the tremendous outpouring of support during our time of grief in the loss of our husband, father, Poppa and Poppa Bob. We were overwhelmed by the many expressions of sympathy: food offerings, phone calls, cards, visits, online condolences, memorial donations and flowers. Each and every gesture was a source of comfort for us. The amazing attendance at the funeral home, funeral and luncheon were a testament to how much Bob was loved. He loved life, loved everyone he met and treated everyone like family. Thank you to Reverend Valerie Kelly for traveling from Kingston to perform the funeral. Bob enjoyed joking with you every year at the pancake dinner. Thank you to Sterling Bennett for providing the music at the funeral and to the choir at the St. John’s Anglican Church. Special thanks to good friend, Hugh Colton for delivering the eulogy and to Gary and Nora Brown for contributing special memories. Thank you to nephew Steven Bennett for writing a wonderful tribute as well. A big thank you to the honorary pallbearers, Ed Strickland, Dick Magill, Hugh Colton, Steve Commodore, Steve Hughes, Gary Brown and pallbearers Steven Bennett, Adam DeLisle, Dale Edwards, Randy Edwards, David Edwards and Carl Lackey. Extra special thanks to the staff of Lannin Funeral Home: Dale, Alex and Ryan. Dale, we know how hard this was for you being one of Bob’s friends and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for the dignified and compassionate treatment along with all of the extra touches and hand holding you provided. Alex and Ryan, thank you for being so attentive, helping us make decisions and being there for us every step of the way. You treated us like family and for that we are ever thankful. Bob was a very special man and his passing has left a huge hole in our hearts. We are very blessed to have a very large and loving family, along with a huge network of friends and neighbours. Thank you all for having been a part of Bob’s life and for honoring him in his passing. ‘Close in our hearts you will always stay. Loved and remembered every day.’ Sincerely, Carole, Teresa, Barb, Vicki and family

Immaculate Virgin, assist me in necessity, Oh Star of the Sea. Help me and show me, here you are “my mother”. Oh Holy Mary Mother of God, Queen of heaven and earth. I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to secure me in my necessity (make request). There are none that can withstand your power. Oh Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3 times). Say this prayer for three consecutive days and then you must publish it and it will be granted to you. GS

Exercise your creativity with the Renfrew Art Guild CHRIS MUSSETT Renfrew Art Guild
Creativity can be defined as finding an original solution to a task or problem. It is often seen as something that special others possess, and far too many people believe that they are not creative themselves. Part of this perception is that they confuse creativity with talent, the means by which we realize those creative ideas. As a beginning creator, it is important to appreciate your original ideas and solutions first, then work later on how to realize them in a media you choose or are already comfortable working in whether it be paint, textiles, clay, markers, wood, fimo, wire, snow or your
cold mashed potatoes. It is important to break down barriers about what you think is of artistic value when you have had little training or practice. For beginners it is about the feeling, not so much the result. If you get lost in the activity, then the activity was successful. At first you must relieve yourself of the responsibility of having it look like the work of someone who has great craftsmanship and create work that is stamped with your own style as it emerges. For a creative practice take a sheet of white bristol board and cut it into four pieces. Take some India ink or well-diluted black acrylic paint and dab it up with an old wet cloth which will be your brush. Dampen the boards in spots with water and let the pigment flow into the wet sur-
face in light greys first, then with darker marks. Stop at any point where you feel you see something you like. You have just created four original artworks and have become involved in a stress-free and fun way with an artistic medium. Add decorative details with Sharpie or fineliner markers when the board dries, if you like. Our next meeting will be Tuesday April 4 at 7 p.m. at Trinity St. Andrew’s United Church, please use the Quarry Avenue entrance ). Please bring any work you’d like to share. Our rotating display of work in the window of John Wilson Investments will feature cottage landscapes by Diana Wakely until April 7 and the whimsical illustrations of Bev Ten Den until April 24.

sudoku
Barsaeinrs
horoscopes
HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
