News - Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MPP John Yakabuski has taken exception to a suggestion by Ontario Transportation Minister Glen Murray that the provincial Opposition parties and the federal government should share the blame if the four-laning of Highway 417 up the Valley is delayed. During a brief visit to Arnprior last month to see work on highway four-laning first-hand, Murray indicated that the minority Liberal government couldn’t add the next phase of the work from Scheel Drive to Renfrew on the ministry’s five-year plan without support from the Opposition parties for more investment into infrastructure. The federal government should also ante up some money as Highway 17 is the Trans Canada Highway, he added. Yakabuski responded to the comments by pointing out that it is the government, not the Opposition, that decides which projects should go ahead. “I don’t believe it was acceptable for him to come into the riding and play cheap political games, he said. Yakabuski followed up his comments by raising the issue at Queen’s Park on March 24. He was upset that there might have been an inference he was backing away from his strong support for the four-laning through Renfrew County.
“I never stopped pushing that project and I’m not going to stop now, he told The Renfrew Mercury. “I think I’ve had some success getting it through Arnprior. He noted that several Liberal transportation ministers have congratulated him over the years for his lobbying to have Highway 17 fourlaned. During question period in the Ontario Legislature, Yakabuski expressed disappointment in Murray’s statements, which he interpreted as questioning his commitment to the twinning of Highway 17. He said the Conservatives are committed to bringing the province’s finances into line and supporting a weak Liberal budget just to get Highway 17 twinned would be “ludicrous. If the provincial debt isn’t tackled, all projects, including Highway 17 improvements, would be jeopardized, he said. He noted that the $1.1 billion wasted on the gas plant cancellations “could have twinned Highway 17 ten times over. However, his party is not recommending chopping infrastructure funding, he maintained. Yakabuski emphasized that Murray has discretion as Minister of Transportation over highway projects. “If the Minister instructs his staff to make Highway 17 a top priority, it becomes a top priority, he said.
