Burnstown man gives back after undergoing transplants TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com
April is Be A Donor month and it has a special meaning for Burnstown resident Stephen Lyons. Lyons had his first liver transplant in 2005. In 2013 his liver disease recurred and in 2014 he was diagnosed with chronic kidney and liver disease. Then in 2014 he started dialysis at Renfrew Victoria Hospital. In 2015 he received a new liver and kidney, which has changed his life. For the second year in a row Lyons has a display set up at Aikenhead’s Drugstore in Renfrew, for the month of April, with information on how to become a donor. “It’s important because organ donation saved my life twice. And I still know people on dialysis, I think this is an important campaign so it can change their lives like it did mine,” said Lyons. Ronnie Gavsie, president and chief executive officer of Trillium Gift of Life, is very impressed with Lyons’ display. “It’s great what he is doing and the partnership with the pharmacy, it really makes a difference,” said Gavsie. “We have found that personal stories are what engages the public. It’s people like Stephen who motivate people to register and talk to their families and make a difference.” There are over 1,600 people in Ontario on wait lists and one donor can save the life of eight other people. “Without the generous gift, they will die,” said Gavsie. Receiving the transplants was overwhelming for Lyons. “I was happy, but sad someone had to lose their life to save mine,” said Lyons. “Hopefully that can help their grieving process.” He has written thank you letters after both of his transplants. “After the second letter the mother sent a card that they were glad I was doing well and wish me many years of health and happiness with her son’s kidney and liver,” said Lyons. Since the transplants he has gained back some independence in his life.

Stephen Lyons has put up two displays at Aikenhead’s Drug store in Renfrew, including in the main window.
“I am on a regular diet, I don’t need to rely on others and I got a part-time job at the hospital, it has definitely helped a lot,” said Lyons. He praises the community support he has received and the staff at Aikenhead’s for allowing the display. “I feel organ donation is very important,” said Theresa Hass, store manager at Aikenhead’s. “He did an amazing display it’s very informative. The display in the outside window is very eye catching, it makes you aware of the need for organ donation.” This year the theme for Be A Donor month, run through the Trillium Gift of Life Network, is ‘Check your Status.’ Gavsie encourages people to check if they are a donor because they no longer use signed donor cards, and let their families know their wishes. Now people need to register in the provincial database. “It only takes two minutes on BeADonor.ca and all you need is your OHIP number and your ages,” said Gavsie. “It’s so quick and in that instant you have given someone on that list the gift of life.”

Renfrew and Arnprior’s connection to the sunshine list
Liberals, NDP hurt rurals: MPP March 23 in the Legislative Assembly, members voted on Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MPP John Yakabuski’s Private Member’s Bill, which would have brought equality to Ontario’s rural municipalities by ensuring that they all share in a portion of the gas tax they pay. Unfortunately, the Liberals and NDP voted down the Gasoline Tax Fairness for All Act during Second Reading. “Currently, the Gasoline Tax Act only permits those municipalities that have a rapid transit or public transportation system to get a tax rebate. As a result, in 2016, only 99 out of 444 municipalities received money from the gas tax, despite the fact that every resident in Ontario pays into it,” said a release from the MPP’s office. “Furthermore, earlier this year Premier Wynne announced that they will be increasing the amount given by two cents a litre to these select municipalities, resulting in an additional $300 million not being fairly divided,” said the release.
$127,645. Three members of the Arnprior town staff made the list, the highest paid being chief administrative officer Michael Wildman at $166,195. Jennifer Morawiec, general manager client services/ treasurer was paid $114,123 and director of recreation Glenn Arthur $100,609. In McNab/Braeside, Lindsey Parkes earned $102,598 as the chief administrative officer/clerk. The three local high school principals also made the list; in Renfrew Terry Hughes and Brennan Trainor both earned $127,705 and the Arnprior principal Tom Havey took home
$126,658. The three provincial leaders are all on the list, including Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne who was paid $208,974, Progressive Conservative Leader Patrick Brown made $181,000 and NDP Leader Andrea Horwath made $158,000. The $100,000 threshold has not changed since 1996, and while the premier has suggested she won’t be increasing it because that is still a lot of money, the government notes that if that were adjusted for inflation it would be almost $150,000 and 84 per cent fewer employees would be on the list.

Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MPP John Yakabuski sought Transportation Minister Steven Del Duca’s commitment at Queen’s Park on March 22 to put the expansion of Highway 17 in the government’s five-year infrastructure plan. During the exchange, Yakabuski stressed the importance of this project, not only for Renfrew County, but to the entire region of Eastern Ontario. When it was revealed last year that the continued twinning of Highway 17 was not in the ministry’s five-year plan, Yakabuski wrote to the minister to express his displeasure with the decision. That correspondence lead to Del Duca visiting the riding before Christmas to see firsthand the conditions on the roadway and to hear from local officials. “As I said at the time, I appreciated the minister coming to the riding to hear our concerns about Highway 17 not being in the ministry’s five-year plan,” Yakabuski said in a news release. He also noted that during that meeting, the minister himself stated that a compelling case for the twinning was made. Yakabuski was disappointed that the minister did not clearly and unequivocally commit to putting Highway 17 into the five-year plan during question period on March 22. “All parties involved understand the importance of the project,” Yakabuski said. “Municipal officials and I have made the case — it is time for the ministry to act.” Yakabuski said in the release that although he did not get a firm commitment from the minister, he is determined to continue to press for this issue because the importance of this project cannot be overstated.

Year-to-date deaths linked to inattentive drivers nearly triple over last year It was a busy March Break for the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) as officers laid more than 2,400 distraction-related charges during their annual Distracted Driving Campaign. Sadly, OPP-investigated collisions that in-
volved an inattentive driver have claimed 11 lives so far this year – almost triple the number of deaths compared to this time last year (four). Deaths linked to this dangerous driving behaviour continue to out-pace speed-
related (nine), alcohol/drug related (six) and seat belt-related fatalities (three) in 2017. The OPP reminds road users that while the campaign is over, officers are committed to distracted driving law enforcement and

Man fined $2,000 for closed season deer hunt An Ottawa man has been fined $2,000 for a hunting offence. “Ahmed Farhat pleaded guilty and was fined for hunting deer during the closed season,” says a press release from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry. “In addition to the fine, he received a one-year deer licence suspension and will be required to retake the Ontario Hunter Education Course.” Court heard that on Jan. 2, 2017, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry received a report of a deer that had been shot and killed near Muskrat Lake, in the Township of Whitewater Region. A conservation officer attended the location. The investigation led the officer to Farhat’s property, where additional evidence was discovered. Farhat was interviewed and subsequently admitted to shooting the deer. Justice of the peace Barry Moran heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, Pembroke, on March 20. To report a natural resources violation, call the MNRF TIPS line at 1-877-847-7667 toll-free any time or contact your local ministry office during regular business hours. Renfrew chamber elects new president at AGM SHERRY HAAIMA sherry.haaima@metroland.com
There’s a new face at the helm of the Renfrew and Area Chamber of Commerce, and the group is enjoying continued success and looking ahead to another great year. Rocky Mountain House owner Amy Rule was elected president at the March 28 annual general meeting at the group’s Raglan Street office. “I’m very excited and honoured to be the next Renfrew and Area Chamber of Commerce president. We have a great slate of board members and directors,” said Rule. “I feel like it’s going to be a great year with a sold-out home show April 21 and 22, and our annual community awards coming up June 1.” Taste of the Valley, which runs in conjunction with the Car Show for Dad on Sept. 16, is another event the chamber is looking forward to, she said. “We’re also going to try to do some extra mixers and after-hours events,” she said. Outgoing president Kent Tubman reported on the past year. “To me this is the good news part of the meeting because 2016/17 was a pretty good year,” he said. “We got an awful lot of things done in that year.” Membership continues to grow, with about 145 businesses now on board. “We had more than seven businesses join the ranks of the chamber last year from every walk of life,” said Tubman. The chamber has great working relationships with the Renfrew Business Improvement Area (BIA) and the Town of Renfrew, he said. “One of the things that started this year was the chamber, BIA and the Renfrew Industrial Commission were invited to sit at the table in the first meeting with consultants about the revitalization of main street,” said Tubman. “And I thought that was really a perfect place to be at because of the massive changes that will happen when they get around to changing the street in the next years.” The chamber’s newsletter, as well as all other methods of communications including social media, are working well to inform members and the community about local goings-on. “Once again we finished the year not only with a balanced budget but also with a small reserve for emergencies,” said Tubman. Last year’s total income was $42,285, almost half of which ($19,275) comes from membership dues. Total expenses for the year were $40,178. “It was also a great year for events,” he said. “We had a fantastic and fun awards and wine-and-cheese night,” he said. More than 150 people attended. More than 40 businesses were able to show off their wares and services at the Taste of the Valley last fall. The Bank of Montreal hosted a successful afterhours business mixer in the newly renovated lobby. A networking breakfast and a sold-out Renfrew and Area Home Show are among the other successful events, said Tubman. Benefits of chamber membership include a listing on the group’s website, medical and health plan benefits, a reduced shipping cost program, and reduced debit and credit card processing, said Tubman. The chamber has representation with the Ottawa Valley Economic Development Partners, Renfrew’s tourism committee and 150 celebration committee,
as well as a group that brings together members from each of the Valley’s chambers of commerce. Tubman expressed his thanks to directors for all their time and service. “It overall has helped our business community,” he said. He said a special thank-you to chamber manager Gail Laird. “I’m grateful for her guidance and support and making sure the chamber continues to happen every day,” said Tubman. He thanked outgoing director Byron Hermann, who is moving east to be with family, as well as Scott Wilson, who represented BMO on the board last year.

Horton approves recycling tender, defers waste tender TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com
It took Horton council more than an hour and a half, in a session not open to the public, to decide what to do with its two collection tenders. Councillors, staff and the public advisory members went in camera on March 29 to discuss “litigation or potential litigation Re: Joint Tender Garbage and Recycling-Information.” When they emerged from their lengthy discussions, council approved a motion to enter into a contract with Beaumen Waste Management Ltd. for recycling material collection services for a five-year period starting April 1 for $73,058 including HST per year. On the garbage side of things council decided to defer its solid waste collection services until the township consults with their lawyer regarding bid submission qualifications. The bylaw to confirm the recycling tender is on the agenda for the April 4 meeting. Council is also set to go in camera, for the same reason, to again discuss the joint tender. The special council meeting was called and the waste/recycling tenders had not been awarded yet because Coun. Jamey Larone, chair of the general government committee and the two
public advisory members from the transportation and environmental services committee, had been away. Before they went in camera, Larone asked staff for more details on a letter from the Ontario Waste Management Association on the safety ratings. “I went on their website and I would like to see more,” said Larone. “I’m not sure after reading the letter, why the ministry hasn’t addressed these issues. I wish they would of followed up on it.” Larone also questioned why the Town of Renfrew deferred its recycling contract. Staff informed council that Renfrew will be re-tendering the recycling contract as it was not in the best interest of the municipality to award it. Matthew Dean, president of Canadian Waste Management Inc., who had bid for garbage tender at a cost of $40,861, was set to be a delegation in front of council. However, when the meeting started, Mayor Robert Kingsbury informed him on the advice of their lawyer it was not in the municipality's best interest for him to speak or answer any council question. In the report from staff it addresses the safe-

County of Renfrew: check 911 civic address signs With the arrival of spring, now is the time to have a look at your civic address signs and ensure that they are cleaned off and visible. Property owners and occupants are responsible for having a sign and ensuring that both sides of their civic address sign are visible from the roadway at all times. Michael Nolan, director of emergency services and chief of the paramedic service for Renfrew County, said, “Please ensure your sign is
clear of debris, such as trees, bushes and snow, and still has reflectivity. It is very important for first responders in vehicles to readily see your number in the event of an emergency. In an emergency, every second counts.” If your sign needs to be replaced, or you don’t have a sign, contact your local municipal office to order a new sign. Residents are reminded that there is a nominal cost to purchase or replace the sign.
ty rating with Canadian Waste, the letter from the association and a letter from Beauman’s regarding rating minimums. The joint tender was with the municipalities of Arnprior, Renfrew and McNab/Braeside. Renfrew awarded garbage to Topps and will re-tender recycling; Arnprior awarded garbage to Topps, it did not award the lowest bid to Canadian Waste but to the second lowest tender being Beaumens; and at the time of the report McNab/Braeside had deferred their award.

Distracted drivers still a danger With police services cracking down on fines and horror stories all over the news, it’s a wonder why distracted driving is still an issue on our roads. Recently, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) held its annual provincial campaign to counter distracted driving and the results are in: 2,400 distracted driving charges were laid in the province. And the fine isn’t anything to scoff at. Under the Highway Traffic Act, drivers charged with the ‘drive with a handheld communication device’ offence face a fine of $490 and three demerit points off their licence. Is it really worth incurring a $500 fine or worse, endangering the lives of yourself and others on the road just to answer a text message? How hard is it to wait until you arrive at your destination or simply pull off the road, park and then take out your phone to check
it?
Driving requires the user to be alert and at attention. According to the OPP, the driving pattern of someone who focuses on their phone or media player for five seconds is similar to falling asleep at the wheel. So far this year, inattentive drivers have claimed 11 lives in collisions investigated on OPP patrolled roadways; almost triple the number from the same time last year. We live in a world where we feed off of constant communication and are expected to be able to multi-task, but when you’re behind the wheel of a vehicle, your safety and that of others driving, should be top of mind. Upon entering your vehicle, put the phone in your pocket, purse or bag, where it’s out of sight and out of mind. It’s about time to pay attention to the road, not the phone.

No limit to PM’s arrogance To the editor:
First of all there is an attempt to unilaterally change the rules of Parliament, including ending Friday sittings and restricting the ability of opposition parties to filibuster bills. Next, Bill M103 was introduced to the House as a discussion paper on human rights, e.g. “elimination of systemic racism and religious discrimination” with emphasis on Islamophobia. This discussion paper has since been passed although a poll released
by Angus Reid Institute found that 42 per cent of 1,511 Canadians would vote against it, 29 per cent would vote in favour and 29 per cent were not sure. Lastly, the government is in discussion with the sugar tax lobby to impose a 20 per cent tax on sugar sweetened beverages. Is there no limit to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s arrogance? I am worried. We should all be worried. Christina Edgar Renfrew

Kin-Ball is team game based on keeping a twopound ball from hitting the ground. It can be played both inside and out, making it a versatile and inclusive option for our physical education program. The return of the eagles Fifty years ago the sighting of a bald eagle was cause for celebration. I have fond memories of Sloan Watters taking me to Mountain Chute dam during winter in the 1960s to look for eagles reported there (I didn’t recall seeing one on those trips). Back then bald eagles were more than rare; they made the endangered species list in the United States in 1978 and in Ontario in 1980. Early records indicate that bald eagles were historically common in North America. But sadly their presence was not appreciated. Misconceptions that eagles killed livestock and competed for game abounded, so bald eagles were shot, snared, and poisoned. Some states offered rewards for killing eagles; in a misguided effort to increase salmon stocks, between 1917 and 1952 Alaska paid more than 128,000 bounties (initially, at fifty cents per eagle, rising to $2 a bird). In 1970, on a Wyoming ranch shooters were paid $25 per eagle; 770 bald eagles were reportedly killed. In Ontario, eagles and other birds of prey fared no better. Jack Miner, Canada’s most decorated conserva-
tionist, killed thousands of birds of prey under the pretense of protecting “important” songbirds and waterfowl by killing “evil” predators. One common method was a steel trap placed atop a pole near poultry pens. The cruelty of this method was denounced in the first publication (circa 1931) of Toronto’s Brodie Club (a group of respected biologists and naturalists). Eagles, already rare, received another devastating blow from DDT and other organochlorine pesticides. These caused eggshell thinning and severely affected eagle reproduction (as it did peregrine falcons). With all those pressures it seemed extinction was inevitable. But DDT was eventually banned (largely due to the heroic efforts of Rachel Carson and her book Silent Spring) and legal protection was finally provided. Slowly bald eagle populations began to recover. A program involving the transplanting of young birds to areas depleted of eagles played a minor role in the recovery. I recall with great excitement discovering a bald eagle nest near Mountain Chute with Donnie Gordon 30-
Michael Runtz
Ospreys, which are just now returning to our area, are regularly robbed of their catch by Bald Eagles. plus years ago. It was at this time of year and we watched an eagle jumping up and down on a snowless point. It then rose up with a great load of dead grass in its talons, and flew to a nearby island. Suspecting it was lining a nest, we climbed a nearby hill and soon spotted a white head sticking up from a massive stick structure in a white pine. The recovery of bald eagles has been touted as one of the greatest conservation success stories in North American history, and today eagles are commonly encountered all through their former range, including
Ontario. Recently I received news of a pair near Ottawa that have taken up residency in an Osprey nest atop a nesting platform. Not only did a nearby resident see them carrying sticks to the nest, she also watched one steal a fish from an otter! Majestic in appearance, bald eagles regularly bully otters, ospreys, and other animals and steal their food. Perhaps its status as the national bird for our neighbours to the south is more than appropriate in current times! The Nature email is mruntz@start. ca

Mayor announces funding for Golden Age Activity Centre SHERRY HAAIMA sherry.haaima@metroland.com
Renfrew Mayor Don Eady brought some exciting news to the second annual Seniors Information and Active Living Fair March 23 at the Golden Age Activity Centre. “Our town council saw fit this year to support this centre, I think to the tune of $10,500,” he said. “The reason we did that is we recognize the importance of seniors in our town. This may be the stabilizer to get a permanent grant and funding for this centre and hopefully that’ll come true.” Horton Mayor Robert Kingsbury also brought greetings, noting his municipality provides financial support to the centre, as well. “I know how important this organization is to our residents
because they tell me,” said Kingsbury. Council is always interested in hearing from residents who use the facility, he said, encouraging letters and correspondence in support of Golden Age. Fay O’Reilly, programmer, thanked both mayors for their support and welcomed Eady’s announcement. “That’s just incredible,” she said. “It’s going to help us a lot. We are a not-for-profit and at present don’t have any sustainable funding and it’s our fundraising that keeps us going.” This is the second year Golden Age has hosted the fair, she said, in partnership with the Older Adult Centres of Ontario (OACAO) and sponsored by the Ministry of Senior Affairs. “We’re very fortunate to re-
ceive this grant and host this event,” said O’Reilly. “As a seniors centre, we can be seen as a resource,” she said. “Today, we really are a resource as you will be able to visit all of the 26 exhibit tables and listen to three presentations – two on health issues and the other on financial management.” She thanked presenters, agencies and businesses, as well as the seniors in attendance. Co-founder Nellie Kingsbury called the announcement of increased Town of Renfrew funding “exciting.” In previous years the centre received about $1,000 each year from the town. The news helps open the door for further government grants and funding, she said. “That was a major thing, to get backing from the town,” she said.

Sunshine Coach fundraiser brings campaign to 50 per cent of goal TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com
Derek Dunn/Metroland
Fundraising organizer and Ottawa Valley country music hall of famer Art Jamieson stands near the projector showing good friends and supporters of the Sunshine Coach, including the late Lee Sharpe, in whose memory the event was held .He said turnout to this year’s event was reasonably close to past years, even though the weather was less cooperative.
FINALLY!
It sure was a fun day! The FUNDay by the Friends of the Disabled Renfrew for the Sunshine Coach’s Ride the Bus campaign was held on March 26 at the Renfrew Armouries and raised about $2,000. “It went fairly well,” said Norm Dagg, executive director for the Sunshine Coach. The amount raised brings the Sunshine Coach to 50 per cent of its goal of $110,000 that needs to be raised to match the federal government funding from public transit infrastructure fund. They recently received confirmation of the government grant — approved for $110,000 — and they needed to match the funds. The new projects include: a new accessible bus to replace the existing bus, which is at the end of its life cycle; acquire a new small coach to replace an existing coach, which is at the end of its life cycle; acquire upgrades to their fleet communications capability to improve efficiency and client safety and acquire equipment to upgrade the garage and improve their in-house vehicle maintenance capability. The goal is to have the fundrais-

Bonnechere Union Public Library dinner /dance Get out your "best bib and tucker" – you're invited to a wedding. It’s the Big Fun BUPL Wedding to be exact. This is a fundraising dinner and dance for the Bonnechere Union Public Library (BUPL) in Eganville. It celebrates all kinds of weddings and promises to be a lot of fun. It has been organized by the Library Board Fundraising Committee, an enthusiastic group of volunteers who seem to have unlimited imaginations. Or perhaps a lot of experience with weddings. It takes place on Saturday, April 29, at the Eagle's Nest banquet hall above the Eganville Arena (lift available). Cocktails and games begin at 5 p.m., dinner is at 6 p.m. and the dancing starts at 9. This committee is chaired by Bonnechere Valley Township's representative on the library board, Meredith Caplan Jamieson. She is positive "this will be an evening for the history books." "Everyone will love the entertainment we have planned, including the play-along Newlywed Game, the Dating Game, a garter toss, and a live auction, to men-
tion just a few. It's fun for couples and singles of all ages, like all weddings are." Jamieson continued: "The various wedding-themed tables are very creative and guests will be stunned by the decorations. The food, drinks and everpopular chocolate fountain promise to be fabulous. This year we are leaving more time for dancing with music by DJ Shanon. And tickets are being sold for a “reception only” portion of the night, starting at 9 p.m. People won't want to miss this event." Each table at this dinner is uniquely decorated to represent a different wedding theme, ranging from elegant to fun to … let’s call it casual. You’ll see themes like vintage nostalgia wedding, Vegas wedding, Irish wedding, hippy wedding, hunt camp wedding … you get the idea. Drag out your wedding attire or find a fun costume! This time, you can choose to be the bride, groom, pastor, ring bearer, parents of the happy couple, wedding attendant, or your wildly-dressed favourite aunt (that leaves a lot of leeway for costume possibilities).
Or simply come as a guest. Enjoy the wedding buffet and then indulge at the chocolate fountain for dessert. There will be a contest of wedding cakes. You can renew your vows at the wedding chapel, with the pastor you won’t soon forget, and get souvenir photos for those who doubt you did that! Whitewater Brewery has generously donated their beer. There have also been generous donations for the live auction, including tickets from RBC Bluesfest, preparation of wills by the new team at the H.J. Stewart Lavigueur legal office in Eganville, tickets to this year’s Stone Fence Theatre Production, this season's maple syrup, and more. This will be the one and only library dinner this spring and you shouldn't miss it. Tickets are only $40 for a full night of fun and food. There are a limited number of tickets available for the reception only, at $10 each, which includes music, dancing and a light lunch later in the evening. All tickets are available at Bonnechere Union Public Library until April 14. Seats are limited. All proceeds from the evening will go to the library.
Resident George Lamendeau, left, lent his expertise to staff member Dave Bromley in the art of maple syrup making at Bonnechere Manor.

Sign of spring at Bonnechere Manor A familiar rite of moving from winter to spring in the Ottawa Valley is the tapping of maple trees to make the time-honoured Canadian traditional maple syrup. The creative recreation staff at Bonnechere Manor had an idea — why not try to tap the maple trees on the Home’s property to get sap and make maple syrup for the residents? Fortunately, David Bromley, Environment Services Supervisor, was very familiar with the process and volunteered to help the rec staff turn this into a meaningful
activity for our residents. Dave also generously volunteered to share his equipment to tap the trees. Recreation staff will then gather the sap with the residents and keep it refrigerated until they have enough sap to boil down into syrup. It takes approximately 45 gallons of sap to make 1 gallon of syrup. With only six maple trees on site, the quantity of maple syrup was not huge, but staff has taken this traditional Renfrew County activity and made it a fun activity for our residents.

A very excited Janice Buelow of Eganville (Lake Clear), left, accepts the award for her prize-winning quilt from Joyce Trafford, general manager of the Carp Fair.
Grand success for local quilter A Valley quilter has seen impressive success with her work. Janice Buelow of the Lake Clear/Foymount area has had one of her pieces make it all the way to the top. The quilt, which Buelow named ‘Kaleidoscope Initiative’ was entered in the Carp Fair Ontario Association of Agricultural Societies (OAAS) 2016 Quilting competitions for machine-quilted quilts and won Grand Champion. It was then sent to district level and won Grand
Champion there. Then it was taken to Toronto for the overall competitions along with 11 other districts from Ontario where it was once again proclaimed Grand Champion. “It seldom happens that a competitor would have two entries make it to this level but Janice had a second quilt from the Renfrew fair entered in the Toronto competitions, but there can only be one winner, said a press release. Buelow is a member of the Renfrew Quilt Guild.

Masons reflect on past as Grand Lodge of England marks 300th anniversary TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com
There are 65 men in Renfrew who are members of a fraternal organization who seek to improve themselves all based on the golden rule. All this while quietly giving back to the community. The Renfrew Mason Lodge No. 122 is marking 157 years and the Grand Lodge of England is celebrating 300 years of existence. The local lodge has a number of special events planned for June 3 and encourages the community to get involved. Andrew Dick, who has been a Mason for three years, is the chairperson of the 300th committee. He describes the organization as a fraternity of men who take good men and make them better with the key principles of brotherly love, relief and truth. “We are a brotherhood of men,” said Dick. “We like to do charity work that all goes on behind the scenes.” Keith Richard is the Worshipful Master of the Renfrew Lodge and has been a Mason for 34 years. “All the charity work is done internally,” said Richard. “We don’t solicit for charity.” In Renfrew they have helped with doctor recruitment donating $5,000 over five years and donated the same commitment to Hospice Renfrew. After its 125th anniversary the Renfrew Masons donated money to purchase an electronic pain-suppressing device for the physiotherapy department of the Renfrew Victoria Hospital. Locally they also hand out bursaries to both Renfrew high schools for students not with the highest grade, but those who are in a financial need wanting to continue with post-secondary studies. The Grand Lodge of Canada in the Province of Ontario sponsors the MasoniChIP child identification program. And every year the Ontario Masons support the Canadian Blood Services donor program with about 35,000 donations. “We don’t do it to say Masons are doing it,” Dick stated. “We do it because we are a fraternity giving back.” WORLDWIDE
There are 3.2 million Masons across the world and more than 40,000 in Ontario, including those at the Renfrew Lodge, which was established one year after Renfrew was incorporated as a town. The lodge was constituted on Oct. 27, 1859 and the first meeting was held on Dec. 19, 1859. Next to the Sons of Temperance, it is the oldest fraternal organization in Renfrew. The first Worshipful Master was Abel Dowswell, who was also the first justice of the peace to be appointed in Arnprior. The lodge purchased its first set of collars and jewels for officers on March 6, 1860 for $37.75. Over the last 157 years their history books state a number of times they have had trouble maintaining membership, not uncommon with any service club. But at 65 members the group continues to grow in Renfrew. Jason Verbruggen has been a Mason for five years and is now the Junior Warden. He joined to become more active in the community. “That’s what being a Mason is all about,” said
Verbruggen. “I wanted to get out and help. We are not a charity organization, we are a fraternity first and we have social events once a month. “Because of it I’ve been more involved in the community.” Richard also joined for the fraternal and camaraderie bonds he has formed over the years but there is more to it for him as well. “I joined because I like to do charity work but I don’t look for recognition,” said Richard. “The challenge of making myself better, not only from the personal point of view but to help all members of society. It’s the satisfaction of being able help others for all the cause of good.” As the Master of the Lodge he has a unique role to play. “I’m there to serve members of the lodge,” said Richard. “There is more personal satisfaction to make other men better because they want to be better. It’s working for the cause of good, our community and its members.” NOT A SECRET SOCIETY
On the Mason’s website it states “Masonry is not a secret society … we’re happy to share what we know. “Any information on Masons can be found at a well-stocked bookstore or local library.” “We are not a secret society, but we are a society with secrets,” said Scott Rodden, Junior Deacon and four-year member. “I think there is a misconception that we are a secret society.” The Masonic Lodge in Renfrew, located on Raglan Street, is right downtown and well marked as are most lodges. The Masons own the building at 340 Raglan St. as the Renfrew Temple Group became landlords of the building in 1984, after renting or borrowing space for 125 years. The first lodge room was the upper part of Munro’s Hotel, in 1866 at the Temperance Hall, 1872 Muir China Hall, 1894 Barnet Block and O’Brien Block. To join you have to know a Mason. Richard notes there is no advertising involved when seeking new members. The website continues on how you know who are Masons “members often identify themselves by wearing Masonic jewelry.” When asked about the jewelry all the men proudly presented their rings. “I discovered a Mason by his ring,” said Dick. “He pushed something across the table and I saw the ring and I said I had always wanted to be a Mason.”

CELEBRATION
The Renfrew Masons will be officially marking the 300th anniversary of the Grand Lodge of England on June 3. They will be providing tours of the lodge and building and want the entire community to get involved. They are planning on a parade with other lodges and service groups (yet to be confirmed), free barbecue, bike rodeo, a show by Little Ray’s Reptile Zoo, RY-J’s bouncy castle and more all free for the community. As well, they recently helped out at Superhero Fun Day and are set to volunteer with students to help clean up for Earth Day. For more information on the Masons check them out on their social media page on Facebook: Renfrew Freemasons-Lodge No. 122.

Trinity-St. Andrew’s Thrift Shop supports Robbie Dean Centre Trinity-St. Andrew’s (TSA) Thrift Shop recently presented $1,020 to the Robbie Dean Centre. The centre’s Renfrew satellite office is located in the basement of the Trinity-St Andrew’s United Church at 291 Plaunt St. South and offers a walk-in crisis support clinic for everyone with a focus on youth and families. It provides front line de-escalation support, safety planning, education and referral to appropriate agencies. The clinic is based on a three-tier level of service: a walk-in clinic, a peer-to-peer parent support group, and community suicide alert training. Theses services are available throughout the week in different locations throughout the County. The Renfrew hours of operation are Thursday from 3-7 p.m. No appointment or referral is needed and service is free of charge. These clinics are similar to a medical walkin clinic but instead of seeing physicians, the client sees a mental health professional. The visit starts with intake and then an assess-
ment. The assessment determines what the next steps are. For more information call 613635-4715 ext 110. Ellen Groenewoud, who made the presentation on behalf of the thrift shop, said: “We are pleased to be able to support the Robbie Dean Centre and the need they meet in Renfrew for crisis support services”. The TSA Thrift Shop sells clothing, books and small household goods at affordable prices. A portion of net sales is given back to the community each quarter. TSA Thrift Shop hours are Mondays 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Thursdays 3-7 p.m., and Saturdays 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. (except holiday weekends). Donations of goods may be made when the shop is open. Pageant set for April 23 TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com
The crown, the flowers, the dresses, and it’s all for a good cause - the 11th annual Miss Teen Ontario East Pageant is set for April 23 at the Renfrew Recreation Centre. Patti Dillabough, pageant organizer, says there is still time to sign up for the event. “It’s a great opportunity to get involved in the community, childhood cancer charities and other charities,” said Dillabough. The deadline to apply is April 12. This year, the winner will be entered into the Miss Teenage Canada pageant in Toronto. Last year, the top crown went to Sophia Decarle. There will also be a first and second runner-up as well as a top model award, the latter of whom will earn $1,500 to enter the Top Model Canada pageant. Last year, Cricket Guest from Renfrew was crowned Top Mod-
el Canada. The judges for this year’s pageant judges are: Angeline McDonald from Bells and Bows Bridal Centre, the gown sponsor; Maureen Fenn, a fashion consultant from Toronto; a representative from new sponsor Models International from Ottawa; Delaney Holley, previous winner and accomplished model; Chris Fry, provincial pageant director; community ambassador Craig Dunbar; Jocelyn Lomnte, executive director of Candlelighters; and Brenda Stanley, businessperson of the year from Barrie. The cost to sign up is $250 but Dillabough says it shouldn’t costs participants anything as there are sponsors to cover the fee. Bells and Bows Bridal Centre has gowns the delegates can borrow, they also assist girls with prom shopping. For info contact Dillabough at toepageant@hotmail.com, on Facebook at Miss Teen Ontario East Pageant, or by calling 613-433-4537.

Afternoon Antiques share the love with Community Living SHERRY HAAIMA sherry.haaima@metroland.com
A group of mature local hockey players having a blast with Canada’s favourite pastime recently gifted a local organization with tickets to a National Hockey League game. Afternoon Antiques convener Pat St. Michael recently arranged for the guys to play a game at Canadian Tire Centre (CTC), and with that came 25 tickets to a game between the Ottawa Senators and Dallas Stars. The group decided to present the tickets to Community Living Renfrew County South so clients could have a fun night out. The experience playing at CTC was certainly memorable, said St. Michael.“The guys had an absolutely terrific time,” said St. Michael. The Afternoon Antiques came together 10 years ago and now play three times a week at the Ma-Te-Way Activity Centre. The league has about 45 players. “There are lawyers, doctors, artists, teachers, farmers and more,” said St. Michael. “We’ve got a nice collection of different backgrounds.” And what keeps them coming back each week? “Health is No. 1,” said St. Michael. “And then the camaraderie.” The after-hockey gathering isn’t what it once was. “Instead of the guys going for a beer afterward, we go to Tim Hortons

for coffee,” he said. The season wrapped up March 24 with a final game and pizza party. Things get rolling again in October and players must pass a physical exam — 10 pushups, five sit-ups and one jumping jack. St. Michael gives props to Gord Barney. “He’s the one who arranges the pizza party, collects the money for playing and contacts the players if there are any changes during the season ... he’s the one that keeps everyone in line,” he said. Among the players are three 75-year-olds — Ivan McDonald, Johnny Lynch and Mike Gorman — referred to as the kid line. And now, along with the friendships and physical activity comes another plus — community boosting. “This is the neatest thing we’ve done,” said St. Michael. A special card of thanks, a letter and warm messages of gratitude underlined the significance of the gesture. “The individuals that we support had so much fun attending the game and cheering on the Senators! It is wonderful they were able to take part in this as for many of them the cost of such an evening would be difficult to cover,” said Community Living Renfrew County South executive director Jennifer Creeden in a thank-you letter. “We are so fortunate to have good people like you supporting our organization and the individuals.”

OLF pins competition during wrestling season
The Our Lady of Fatima (OLF) Catholic School wrestling team participated in two wrestling tournaments this year and came out golden in both. At the Norm Bujold qualifier, OLF placed first in the novice division. And at the Grant Lavallee qualifier OLF placed first in novice, kid and tied for first in the bantam division. Head coach Dan St. Michael and assistant coaches Josh Scobie and Jasmine Scobie are very proud of the team. Lavallee was also on hand to show the wrestlers the new team logo for the Renfrew Amateur Wrestling Vipers.

Local golf courses gear up for new season TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com
April showers mean the grass is teeing up at local golf courses. There are six courses nestled in and around Arnprior and Renfrew. Sand Point Golf Course is located at 38 Golf Club Rd. in Braeside, and the 18-hole course is described as a target-style course spanning 6,106 yards. One hole of note that can be misleading is the 91-yard Quarry Hole over looking the Ottawa River, but if you make a good shot you will be rewarded. Mountain Creek Golf Course is celebrating its 25th anniversary. It is located just outside of Arnprior at 311 Mountain View Rd. and is a championship 18-hole layout that winds its way around two lakes and a creek that comes into play on five holes. There are five sets of tees, which are both fun and challenging for all skill levels. This year the golf school will begin in June and will focus on new golfers and short game; they also have a short game area under construction. Mountain Creek expects to be open the week of April 17. Madawaska Golf Course has two courses: Twisted Pines is 18 championship holes with par 70, and Sumac Grove is 18 executive holes with par 61 at 250 Keatley Rd. Twisted Pines is now over 40 years old and offers a challenge to all golfers, and if you have not played it in a couple of years you are in for a pleasant surprise as they have cleared out under trees to help speed up play and increase the
fun aspect of the game. Over the season they will also be providing opportunities to experience Twisted Pines for free as well. As a familyfriendly course they will be introducing a number of kids’ programs directed by Daniel Guay with two key objectives: to make golf more affordable, and encourage family programs. Madawaska’s tentative opening day is April 14. Calabogie Highlands Golf Resort is located at 981 Barryvale Rd. in Calabogie. It is a semiprivate, 18-hole championship course with challenging elevation changes and spectacular views. The new Class A CPGA pro is Chris Bernard, who will be offering lessons and golf camps. He has joined the Calabogie Highlands after 25 years of various head pro titles in the Ottawa area. Captains of the various leagues have their game plans ready to go with games scheduled to start at the end of April. Dragonfly Golf Course, located at 955 Opeongo Rd., is a natural looking 18-hole golf course with two nines; the back nine is more like target golf and the front nine is a links style. The driving range is tentatively scheduled to open the week of April 6 and the course is set to open the week of April 13. They are very excited to get their league nights going, as enrolment has been brisk. The Renfrew Golf Club is located at 1108 Golf Course Rd. in Renfrew and was originally a nine-hole course created in 1929 on the old Peever farm. Now, this 18-hole course offers golfers of all levels fun, excitement and challenges looking out on the scenic Ottawa Valley.

Three Renfrew area hockey players claim major-midget awards DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com
There must be something in the ice-water, because southern Renfrew county is producing some of Eastern Ontario’s best hockey players in recent years. Of those entering their late teen years, Arnprior’s Liam Hawel and David Silye play junior in Guelph and Nanaimo, B.C., respectively, and are expected to have long careers in the sport. But they are the elder statesmen who can be said to have paved the way for at least three younger boys that are ripping up the region’s top midget league. Each year Hockey Eastern Ontario’s Under 18 AAA league hands out five awards in a variety of categories. This year, the most valuable player (MVP), the top prospect, and the top rookie were claimed by kids from Arnprior, Renfrew, and Cobden. Ryland Mosley of the Carleton Place Canadians is the 2017 MVP. Born in 2000, the Arnprior native finished tied for first overall in league scoring with 56 points (20 goals, 36 assists) in 45 regular season games. He has 100 points in 97 games in the league. In a press release announcing the win, the league said: “Mosley is a high-skilled forward who can make plays at high speed as well as show good poise in tight to make things happen. (And he) is able to separate himself from defenders in front of the net to find openings to shoot, knock in rebounds, or even get his stick on pucks for tipJack Quinn has been named Eastern Ontario’s top ins.

“When on his games, he can be a real thorn for the opposition to deal with.” Mosley stopped by the Nick Smith Centre where he played hockey until peewee, before heading off to a year of AA, then the rest at AAA. “I saw it on Twitter. I was really excited,” Mosley said

of the award. “I knew I was up there in points, but I wasn’t expecting it.” His hope is to join the OHL like Hawel, but would also be pleased to play next year with Carleton Place’s junior A team. This summer will see the Connor McDavid fan at home bulking up at the gym and working on his defensive skills at the rink. Mosley is grateful to parents Stephen and Leesa for spurring him on and providing countless driving hours. He also appreciates all the coaches along the way, especially Todd Clarke of Renfrew who “pushes me to be better and knows my strengths and weaknesses.” Mosley is also impressed with two other area players who are a year younger. Simon Rose of the Pembroke Lumber Kings is this year’s top prospect. The Renfrew-born defenceman finished third in goal scoring among blueliners with 10, notching 21 points in 39 games. “Rose is a smart player on both sides of the puck who makes quick smart decisions in transition,” according to the league. “He is an excellent defender with good size who has a smooth stride and poise while carrying the puck.” It describes his one-on-one defensive ability as “fantastic” for closing the gap quickly with his long reach. Rose participates in St. Joseph’s High School’s hockey program with
the league’s top rookie, Jack Quinn of Cobden. Quinn, a forward with the Kanata Lasers, finished third overall in league scoring at 52 points (28 goals, 24 assists) in 45 games. The clutch player also nabbed a league-leading nine game-winning goals. “Quinn is an offensive forward with high-end puck skills and very impressive vision,” the league said. “He plays a strong two-way game and his strong skating and vision allow him to get to open ice to make plays. “Although not the biggest player, Quinn still has the strength and work ethic to win open ice puck battles. He has the potential to be a real force moving forward once he adds more strength to his frame.” Mosley said Rose and Quinn are special players with bright futures. He is also impressed with fellow Arnprior District High School student Jesse Dick’s play. Dick often quarterbacked the power play with Pembroke this year, though a rookie. So, is there something in Renfrew county’s ice-water? “There must be,” Mosley said, laughing, then offering advice to younger kids. “Keep working hard and learning as much as you can when you are young. “And have lots of fun. Two Renfrew Collegiate athletes earn silver medals in provincial championships TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com
It was a silver lining for Reid Hall and Savana Pinsent in the high school winter sports season. The two Renfrew Collegiate Institute (RCI) athletes both brought home silver medals from Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) championships in their respective sports. Wrestler Pinsent competed March 2 and 3 in Brampton at the Gatorade Centre wrestling championship. The Grade 9 student was the youngest in her category and she wrestled in the 61 kg class, but only

weighed in at 58.9 kg, making her the lightest of 32 wrestlers. To qualify for the tournament, she placed second in the Eastern Ontario final and earned the silver medal in the final match. She has been wrestling for five years and had a
plan in the championship match. “I just knew I needed more points and was waiting for the right moment,” said Pinsent. “I felt good, I should have done better on my last match, but it was a good experience.”

She already has her sights set on next year. “My goal is gold,” she said with a smile. The event welcomed close to 1,000 wrestlers. “It was definitely a challenge because there were so many people there, you are star-struck,” said Pinsent. “It was a really fun experience.” Pinsent was coached by Harry Smith and Terry Hughes at the tournament. “(The) match guaranteeing her for the championship match was very intense,” said Smith in an email. “The score was bouncing back and forth between both wrestlers, resulting in a one-point lead, winning
Hall finished first individually at the Eastern Ontario (EOSSA) championships to qualify and the school team also finished in first place at Calabogie. “It was my home course, the biggest difference (at EOSSA) we knew how to use the speed of the hill,” said Hall. The school team made up of Brendan Barber, Axel Brisebois, Liam Todd, Hall and Jake Chevrier finished in sixth place in the province. At OFSAA he had two runs and his combined time earned him a silver medal. “It felt pretty good,” said Hall. “I was pretty stoked after snowboarding for seven years, it showed

Curling Club in final stretch of season ANDY SKLEPOWICZ Behind the Glass
The end of the season is upon us, but not before a mad dash to the finish. The ironman (or numbskull) award has to go to the senior men who played five and, for some, six games in three continuous playing dates. Thank goodness we had a weekend off or they would have been scraping us off the ice with the year-end debris that is left behind. And the results: The winners of the Harold Eady draw (former championship trophy) were Rob Warren, Joe Kasaboski, Larry Beaton and Chuck Ross, at 4-0-1, followed by Andy Sklepowicz, Jim Harbord et al., Bernie Leclaire and Roy Leitch (3-2) and Gus Woito, Brian Hewitt, Jim Freemark/Bob

Hay and Mike Gallagher (2-1-2). The shot of the draw belonged to Gus as he was facing three, up one in the eighth, played a perfect, last shot, long range in-off to roll to, and spin around a counter on the four foot to sit on the button leaving the opposition and even his own team stunned by the Brier worthy shot. In the Monday night Open, A champs were Dave Eady, Jim Berg, Rory MacKay and Bernie Leclaire as they staged a great comeback, capped off with an eighth-end steal of two over the Warren foursome. The Gord Eady rink, with Ed Hansen skipping, took B honours over Bill Bowles’ band while in a battle of the ladies, Barb Westgarth’s team won the B consolation over the Yvonne Sklepowicz rink and in the C-championship Cliff Valleau’s vindicators finished off Dustin
Zorr’s young(er) guns, while Shelley Jamieson saved her team’s fortunes with a perfect draw for one, facing five and up four, to take the C-Consolation over Andy Sklepowicz and co. In Thursday afternoon curling, the winners of the fourth draw were Rob Warren, Cedric Wright, Laura Hanson and Roy Leitch. Tied for second were the teams skipped by Bill Bowles and Yvonne Sklepowicz. Banquet Wrapping up the season is the closing dinner and Ben Oakes invites everyone to join him on Saturday, April 8 at 5:30 for happy hour followed by dinner of slow-roasted beef and fire-kissed chicken with all the trimmings and dancing till you drop. Mary was surrounded by sweet smells of spring Audrey said it was nonsense. Spring didn’t smell any different than any other time of the year. And she practically yelled out “smell”. She was in a bad mood because her best friend Iva couldn’t come over that Saturday morning, because she had extra chores to do. But I knew for an absolute fact that the arrival of spring brought with it a special smell in the air. Mud. I could smell mud. It wasn’t an unpleasant smell, but once the snow melted and the ground was wet, I could smell mud. Especially in our long lane where the melting snow had left deep ruts in the narrow road. And I would know spring would be soon upon us from the smell. And there were other signs too. Just into the new year, Mother would have received her packets of vegetable seeds, ordered from the Steele-Briggs catalogue, and little slat boxes would be sitting all over the house. And I could see sprigs of vegetables pushing up, and what would be flowers coming through the earth. I would put my nose as close to the little plants as I could get without touching anything of course, and I would smell Spring.
THIS WEEK’S FEATURE
Some of the little flat boxes would be in the parlour, which would still be closed off for the winter to save the heat from the Findlay Oval, which had to warm the whole house. Mother said some of the little plants had to be in a cool spot, and the room would take on the sweet smell of growth. The smell of spring. Once the winter was broken, Mother would tell Audrey and me to open the upstairs windows when we were doing our Saturday morning chores. Even though there was still a bite in the air, Mother ordered the windows open while we stripped the beds, dusted the furniture and the floors, and turned the feather mattresses. And wafting through the open window was the smell of spring I soon learned not to tell Audrey the air coming inside smelled differently than it did all winter. But to me it did. And where I noticed it more than any other place, was when I went into the part of the barn where the sheep were kept. New lambs

were arriving regularly, as they did every spring. How I loved to spend time in the barn at that time of year. I could smell the wool. To me it had an odour all its own when MARY COOK winter was breaking, and not like the wool on the sheep when they were full grown. And I would think it was the smell of new birth ... the smell of spring. Even the Northcote school began to smell differently. Galoshes weren’t needed anymore, and the boys big rubber boots were exchanged for high top running shoes, so the smell of wet socks was no longer there, and the school took on a ‘cleaner’ smell, enhanced because Miss Crosby would have started leaving the door open for a spell when morning classes began. Sap boiling on the Findlay Oval, filling the kitchen with the sweet smell of spring, even when all the snow had yet to melt in the back yard. And one day I made the mistake of scooping up a small handful of mud at the back door and Emerson saw me. He ran right into

Mother to tell her I was eating it. Which was a barefaced lie. All I wanted to do was put it to my nose. To breathe deeply its musty scent. And I would sit on the back stoop and look at cleared patches in the yard where the snow had melted, and every day the patches would grow, and I knew soon the last of winter would be gone. Bridge club switches it up MIKE NAGRODSKI Renfrew Duplicate Bridge Club
The bright sun certainly brings out both spring flowers and avid bridge players. On March 29, the Renfrew Duplicate Bridge Club offered a change from regular play as they presented a Swiss Team match play afternoon. (The Swiss Team forTHIS WEEK’S FEATURE mat consists of teams of four players competing on a team versus team baEGANVILLE sis). As usual, the Swiss Team game was well received and there were twelve teams participating. Though the Swiss format is sometimes a bit more social than the usual, the afternoon’s play was both competitive and challenging. The Berndt team (Ernie Berndt/Eric Brown/Rick Duncan/Leanne Cheliak) were the clear winners of the day as they posted a perfect 4-0 record. The Kobus team (Bev Kobus/Ian Scott/Ted Ambridge/ Mike Nagrodski) posted a 3-1 record and crept into second place over a VALU PACK Striploin log-jam of three teams tied for third Steaks place. VIMY
100
th
Anniversary
Two brothers, together forever
N
icole Chénier looks at two faded photographs and wonders what the two men in the black-and-white copy were like. She never met Olivier or Wilfrid Chénier. If the First World War – and the Battle of Vimy Ridge – had never taken place, she would likely have known her two cousins very well. Olivier and Wilfrid were brothers, growing up on a farm in nearby Buckingham, Que. They enlisted in the Royal Canadian Regiment the same day. They served together, and then died together the same day at Vimy at age 26 (Olivier) and 27 (Wilfrid). Today they are buried side by side, beneath the French soil. Nicole, who today lives in the South Keys area, says her father often told stories, but never had much to say about her cousins Olivier and Wilfrid. “I think my dad was too young,” says Nicole. “He didn’t know a lot about them. I think for some reason (the family) never talked about it.” Nicole has an elaborate package of research about the Chéniers (at one time spelled Chené) and the family’s centuries in Canada. The family dates back to the 1600s in France. Despite the 100 years since Vimy Ridge took the lives of more than 3,000 Canadian soldiers, there are still holes in families – and family histories. Those who died are still remembered, even as the decades pass.
If they had survived the war, Nicole is sure Olivier and Wilfrid would have returned to work on the family’s farm. She would have been much younger than them, but is sure they would have spent time together. “I think the family would have been really proud of them,” she said. “I’m sure they would have been heroes in the family.” – by Nevil Hunt, Metroland

Vimy memorial restoration took years to complete
Olivier or Wilfrid Chénier died on April 9, 1917, the first day of the Battle of Vimy Ridge. They are buried in Cabaret Rouge Cemetery, near Souchez, France.
T
he memorial on the top of Vimy Ridge in France serves as a reminder to never forget those who made the ultimate sacrifice during the First World War. This year, April 9 marks the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge. A grateful France granted Canada the land where the Canadian National Vimy Memorial rests. THIS WEEK’S PUZZLE ANSWERS IN NEXT WEEKS ISSUE.
HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

ARIES – Mar 21/Apr 20 Aries, you’re not afraid to take risks or go where others fear to tread. Use this trait to your advantage and inspire others to set aside their reservations as well.
LEO – Jul 23/Aug 23 This may be a dull and lazy week, Leo. But that can be a good thing. This means you can recuperate from anything that has been ailing you, or just relax.
SAGITTARIUS – Nov 23/Dec 21 You should get what you desire this week, Sagittarius. It may be a larger office or tickets to that big game you have been mulling over. The joy will be in the surprise.
TAURUS – Apr 21/May 21 Taurus, you have a knack for making money this week. Keep abreast of any business ventures that may cross your desk. This may be a lucrative time for you and your family.
VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22 A massive incentive could be coming your way, Virgo. It’s best to be aware of all the goings-on inside and outside of the office. This can be a great chance to get ahead.
CAPRICORN – Dec 22/Jan 20 Do not worry so much about what others think of you, Capricorn. You have been traveling down the right path for some time, and others recognize that you have your act together.
GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21 Do not leave anything until the last minute this week, Gemini. It’s best to get all of your work done as early as possible, just in case some fun pops up for the weekend.
LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23 Libra, it’s not in your nature to complain, and this week will be no different. Take your usual approach and confront a problem rather than complain about it.
AQUARIUS – Jan 21/Feb 18 A big opportunity is mentioned in passing this week, Aquarius, and you begin to mull over the possibilities. This may be the right time to strike while the iron is hot.
CANCER – Jun 22/Jul 22 Cancer, if you have been waiting for some sort of compensation, this could be the week that it arrives. Remain patient and that patience will ultimately be rewarded.
SCORPIO – Oct 24/Nov 22 Scorpio, this week your thoughts could turn to faraway places or daydreams may distract you from the daily grind. An upheaval of some kind is imminent.
