Cab driver faces hit and run charges Derek Dunn

derek.dunn@metroland.com

Stuart Carswell is charged criminally with leaving the scene after fatally running over an Arnprior man on April 2. Carswell, 63, also of Arnprior, will appear in Renfrew court on May 4 to answer to a charge of failure to remain at the scene of an accident causing death. In a news release, OPP also noted “everyone is encouraged to practice personal safety at all times.” According to police spokeswoman Janice Sawbridge, the warning is not meant to indict capability on behalf of the victim, 29-year-old Chris Walsh. She is confident Carswell should have known that it was a human being he ran over, not an animal or object. OPP first got involved at 4:55 a.m. on Saturday morning after a newspaper delivery driver discovered Walsh’s body on Russett Drive, near Bandys Road, in McNab-Braeside. Officers arrived on the doorstep of Murray and Diane Swaine not long afterward.

Officials to monitor river levels after major landslide From front

A seismic event or the freeze/frost cycle and oversaturation of water could have triggered the slide, said Osipenko. The large deposit of material caused the river to back up. “The water was backed up about 25 feet above where it normally is,” he said. However, there was not much that had to be done to break up the blockage. “Around the time we found it, it had started to break through just from the pressure itself. The river will find its own way.” The fact the slide happened during spring runoff compounded the problem. The Bonnechere flows into the Ottawa River, which is now full of logs from the Bonnechere all the way to Rhoddy’s Bay, said Osipenko, who said he has notified officials at the Fitzroy dam to prepare for the large influx of debris. Osipenko is pleased to report there were no reported injuries as a result of the slide and flooding. “There were three property owners directly affected,” he explained. There are several owners of the land affected at the end of Ferguson Road. A relatively new cottage built on the riverbank near the Highway 17 bridge, is gone. “It actually floated off its foundation and went down the river,” he said. The former Lindsay House below Renfrew’s Swinging Bridge, was also affected, experiencing the highest water since the dam has been there. “Apparently it went seven feet up the wall,” said Osipenko. “The water was actually a foot from touching the road.” He urged the public to stay away from affected areas, including in Horton Township. “The area is very unstable and nobody should go in there so please don’t go in and try and have a look at it,” he said. “It’s private property and it’s a safety hazard.” There were some minor slides over the weekend as the banks stabilized themselves, reports Osipenko. “We will be reassessing the entire river from downstream of Renfrew tomorrow hopefully,” he said on Monday, April 4. “There has been much inquiry from geologists and other emergency managers to learn from this.” Officials are also pleased with how the emergency management system worked and are aware of the Leda clay and the potential for slides. “We’ve known this could happen,” said Osipenko. “We’ve made plans in our emergency planning. It worked fine, the communication was great.” Emergency officials had some high tech help in managing the problem. “The paramedic service has a drone,” explained Osipenko, who is also a Renfrew County paramedic. “We called it in and were going to use it to try and find out where the plug was.” As they had already discovered the blockage, they used the drone to survey the area to check for further debris, jams, bank slides and assess the severity of the damage. “As an emergency management tool it was unbelievably helpful and way cheaper than an $11,000 helicopter,” said Osipenko. The drone will be used in the ensuing days to monitor the area and further assess the situation.

alerted to the situation when the water became too high to generate power, he noted. The system is then subsidized through Hydro One, meaning lost revenue for Renfrew Hydro. “We came back online yesterday at noon,” said Cameron March 31. “We experienced some flooding to our power house. Plant two was submerged about four-to-four-and-a-half feet and we did have water in the basement of our new plant but we were able to deal with that with just pumps.” Officials are certainly pleased there was no damage to the just opened Thomas Low Generating Station, he added. The situation is unlike anything Cameron has ever experienced. “In the history of Renfrew Hydro, nothing like this has ever happened,” he said. TOWN

Asselin reports the backwater caused flooding of the former sewage treatment plant building and tanks but they have been decommissioned and didn’t serve any purpose. “Other than that flooding it didn’t really have an impact on our sewage operation,” said Asselin. At the town’s new sewage treatment plant, the water rose sufficiently to bring water against the process tanks, he said. “There was a little infiltration into the underground pump chambers and that infiltration was managed with sum pumps,” said Asselin. One sewage pump station at the end of Arthur Street was submerged in the floodwater, added Asselin, which was reported to the Ministry of the Environment and the Renfrew County and District Health Unit. NO CONCERN

“There was no concern with respect to potability of water or any other infrastructure other than the one pump station,” he said. He agreed that the system worked well in face of the emergency. “The emergency management personnel and team worked with all the parties – MNR, Renfrew Power Generation, Horton and the town – to share information and manage the flood,” said Asselin. Waters have receded, he said, and the town is looking to confirm that water levels are back to normal.

Walsh’s mother says son’s death was an accident From front

Murray, Walsh’s stepfather, told police on the front lawn that he learned on the Internet hours beforehand of a 29-year-old man’s death. “I told them I know why you are here,” he said. Diane said her son had substance abuse problems, and hadn’t stayed at their home since the preceding Tuesday. A post mortem examination was performed April 4. Before that time, she didn’t know from police about the circumstances of her son’s death. However, the owner of one of two cab companies in town visited her to say the driver is overcome with remorse. “It was an accident,” she said prior to speaking with police. “That’s why they call it an accident. I don’t want anything negative. (Carswell) is going to go through a terrible, terrible time.” Walsh is also survived by his sister, Melissa. His father, Michael, drowned in July 2011 on the Mississippi River below the five-span bridge in Pakenham after he slipped off a rock into the fast-moving water. Russett Drive between Mabels Road and Bandys Road was closed through the day while police conducted their investigation into the fatality. The OPP Renfrew County Crime Unit, under the direction of OPP Det. Insp. Rob Hagerman of the Criminal Investigation Branch, continues to investigate. Anyone with information about this death is asked to contact the OPP Renfrew County Crime Unit at 1-888310-1122. OPP Const. Jodi Burns was the early lead in the investigation, with assistance from a technical collision investigator, the Forensic Identification Unit and Renfrew County Crime Unit. -with files from Sherry Haaima

No four-laning timeline given after meeting with province Tiffany Lepack

tlepack@metroland.com

Renfrew County has done everything possible to plead its case to expand the four-laning of Highway 17 from Scheel Drive to Bruce Street, even arguing that it could be a nation-building exercise. Renfrew County Warden Peter Emon reported to his council colleagues on March 30 on a meeting a county delegation had with the Ontario Transportation Minister Steven Del Duca. Emon, McNabBraeside Mayor Tom Peckett, county director of public works and engineering Steve Boland, director of development and property Paul Moreau, and RenfrewNipissing-Pembroke MPP John Yakabuski met with Del Duca on March 24. Emon called the 45-minute discussion very productive, as the county representatives were able to speak frankly and freely with the minister. “(His staff) felt comfortable we hit all of the marks,” said Emon. “It’s in essence a ministry decision at this point.” The minster informed them he would get back to them ‘soonish’ but did not have a timeline for the next phase of the project. “With a plan we can feel comfortable with communicating it to our travelling public and also to our ratepayers and residents,” said Emon. “The plan would likely outline the next steps with some timelines

for them to be held to account.” Emon hoped that Canada’s 150th anniversary coming up might help encourage a funding announcement. “We did spend some time talking about it being part of the national highway transportation network. We spent some time talking about it being a pretty significant event in 2017,” said Emon. “Given it’s Canada’s 150 birthday, that it should be a nationbuilding exercise that the two levels of government could and should partner to announce a plan and finance a plan.” Peckett also thought it was a very good meeting. “He acknowledged that the county had done everything asked of them,” said Peckett. Peckett also impressed on the minister how Arnprior has been affected since the four lanes had arrived to the municipality. Peckett was particularly pleased with one specific comment from the minister. “(He said) that he doesn’t like to leave things hanging; he said that near the end of conversation,” said Peckett. “That comment has given me some enthusiasm for the first time in a long time that we are going to see some sort of action on extending the 417.” The minster told them the county had contributed a great deal to the discussion and had brought information to the ministry on a regular basis.

4 The Renfrew Mercury - Thursday, April 7, 2016

“We also took a slightly different tact this time in that we acknowledged it would be a significant provincial investment for next phase from Scheel to just beyond Bruce Street in Renfrew,” said Emon. He continued by saying the provincial estimate for the project is $150 million, although that is four years old. “We indicated the County of Renfrew will be investing about $18 million in that 10-year span in infrastructure renewal which will service the Highway 17 soon to be Highway 417 corridor,” said Emon. “We also indicated local municipalities in Renfrew County would be spending that plus likely another $18 million.” He estimated local municipalities would be contributing $30 million in their infrastructure renewal along that corridor as well in that same time period. “We highlighted (Mayor) Peckett and his municipality committing to rebuild the Goshen Road for about $1.4 million and cited that is a fairly significant contribution to the prosperity and the access to Highway 417 given his total budget is usually in neighbourhood of $8 million,” said Emon. Emon feels the delegation put it all out there. “We highlighted we have some skin in the game to use a more common term because we are contributing to their investment and matching their investment as best we can.”

Police issue warrant for Quebec man after pedestrian hit in Renfrew Staff

Renfrew OPP have issued an arrest warrant for Patrick McPhie after a hit and run that sent an elderly pedestrian to hospital with serious injuries. McPhie, a 21-year-old Pontiac, Que., man, is charged with failing to stop at the scene of a collision causing bodily harm and taking a motor vehicle without consent. Police were called to Raglan Street at Railway Avenue in Renfrew on Thursday, March 31, at 2:50 p.m. to investigate an incident in which a 75-year-old woman from Whitewater Region Township was seriously injured. “She suffered serious injuries and was transported by paramedics to hospital,” said OPP Const. Janice Sawbridge. The woman was using the crosswalk and one vehicle had come to a complete stop to allow her to cross

Several cottage owners reported their cottages broken into last week. Const. Mark Yarmel is leading the investigation into four reported break-ins to cottages on Lurges Lane in the Township of Admaston-Bromley. Nothing appears to have been stolen but damage was done to get in, and once inside at least on fire extinguisher was emptied. The investigation is continuing. SEXUAL ASSAULT INVESTIGATION

Renfrew OPP officers are investigating after a sexual assault was reported to them. Officers began their investigation on April 3 when the victim reported being sexually assaulted at a residence in Renfrew on April 1 in the evening hours. The victim also reported a quantity of cash was stolen from them. Const.Troy Dobbie is leading the investigation.

when it was rear-ended by a white Chevy Impala allegedly driven by the suspect. The impact sent the first vehicle forward, striking the victim. “One of the witnesses said he stopped for the pedestrian who was using the crosswalk. He came to a complete stop and seconds after was struck from behind,” said Sawbridge. “The white car fled the scene northbound on Railway Avenue.”

A member of the public actually helped police identify the suspect. “Thanks to witnesses who followed the suspect vehicle and got the licence plate number and description of the suspect we were able to identify the driver,” said Sawbrige. “The male then got out of the vehicle and ran away but we got a good description of him.” To further complicate the case, police first arrested another male.

“When we arrived at the suspect vehicle there was a male sitting in the driver’s seat so initially that male was arrested,” said Sawbridge. “Investigation revealed he was not the driver and he was released unconditionally.” Lead investigator in the case is Const. Mark Yarmel. Anyone with information is asked to call the OPP Renfrew County Crime Unit at 1-888-310-1122.

Fire chiefs’ association launches ‘Stop Texting’ campaign “They’re on the road steady and very visible to the public,” he said of commercial cars and trucks. By placing the magnet on your vehicle you are making a commitment to set an example and not text while driving. Last year, distracted driving killed 78 people on Ontario’s roads. The ‘Stop Texting’ campaign was initially started by Kingston’s Emergency Services and was adopted by the RCFCA in 2015.

Sherry Haaima

sherry.haaima@metroland.com

The Renfrew County Fire Chiefs’ Association (RCFCA) is the latest agency to get behind the campaign to stop distracted driving. On March 31 in Pembroke, fire officials from across the county gathered at the Pembroke Fire Hall to launch the ‘Stop Texting’ campaign, which produced sizeable stop sign shaped ‘Stop Texting’ magnets to give out to the public. Renfrew Fire Chief Guy Longtin explained his department is banding with other emergency services to get the message out because people just continue to drive while distracted. “We respond to so many accidents on the highway, it’s time we started getting the message out,” said Longtin. “Statistics show distracted driving is the leading cause of highway fatalities.” All Renfrew County fire departments’ fire and rescue apparatus will display the magnets. The association produced thousands of the magnets, 500 of which are at the fire hall for the Renfrew department to hand out. All Renfrew County fire de-

County-wide Summer Smiles launches and seeks donations Tiffany Lepack

It’s almost time to sing songs around the campfire and dip your paddle in the water. That’s right, camp time is right around the corner. Helping to make the summer camp dream possible is the Darlene Aikens Memorial Summer Camp Program: Summer Smiles Campaign, which was officially launched on March 30 outside the County of Renfrew building in Pembroke. Dave Henderson, fund development coordinator for Family and Children’s Services of Renfrew County, is excited to help launch the program with a strong goal announced. “We are hoping to send 250 children to summer camp right across Renfrew County. With an average cost of $350 per camper we are looking for $75,000 to help bring summer camping experiences and all the great benefits that come with it to the children,” said Henderson. The fund covers camps from right across the county, including day camps in both Renfrew and Arnprior. Henderson hopes the public will donate to help cover the cost. “A donation of any amount is greatly appreciated,” said Henderson. The camp program is named after Darlene Aikens, a former manager who ran the program before she passed away. “She had a wonderful heart for children

and summer camps,” said Henderson. “She was deeply dedicated to making sure children across Renfrew County had a camping experience.” Arijana Haramincic, executive director of Family and Children’s Services of Renfrew County, explained this program has been running for over 30 years. “It has been in honour of one of our workers who passed away too early,” said Haramincic. “In that honour we wanted to provide a support for all the children in the county to have a wonderful summer camp experience.” Both Henderson and Haramincic noted the camp experience was therapeutic for children to attend. “Studies show that a camping experience for children increase’s their self-worth, selfesteem, helps with their social interaction,” said Henderson. “The whole family unit benefits from the summer camp experience.” According to Haramincic many children in the county would not be able to attend camps without the program. “In Renfrew County there is one in 10 children who live in poverty so for those children this is one way to be able to participate in childhood and have those experiences that will carry them into being adults and hopefully they will be able to share that with their own children,” said Haramincic.

But as you listen to David Ridgen’s haunting voice as he walks through the forest around Holmes Lake, the hairs on the back of your neck stand at attention. Ridgen’s new podcast is called Someone Knows Something, and the first season is on the disappearance of five-year-old Adrien McNaughton from Arnprior. It is captivating to say the least. He has brought back what some may consider a lost art as he verbally paints a picture of each person he interviews, the sights, the sounds and the feeling of the room. The CBC online podcast has been the talk of the town. It’s stirring past memories as people remember how they searched for the lost boy who seemed to vanish after a family fishing trip. Thousands in the area helped in the search; many now are reluctant to talk about it, but Ridgen with his calming and trustworthy approach he has been able to interview new witnesses. The first week it debuted, the number one searched story on InsideOttawaValley.com was an article on the OPPs updated police sketch released a few years ago. In episode four, a new forensic artist speaks with the family and produces a number of new images of what Adrien would look like now. She was kind, caring and welcomed the input from all the family members. Each Monday a new episode is posted online at http://www.cbc.ca/sks; 10 in total are planned. This week’s episode follows Ridgen as he ventures out with two cadaver dogs to the search location; the cliff-hanger at the end has you yearning for more. Ridgen grew up in Arnprior and is an award-winning filmmaker who has produced a number of documentaries. He handles the sensitive subject matter of the McNaughton family grief like he is a part of the family. As he says towns are like big families, he takes that sentiment to heart as he dances around the delicate feelings of all involved, especially when there seems to be some inconsistencies in parts of the story. He weaves together the memories of the family, who simply want answers, with well-documented evidence. Ridgen has been successful in uncovering the truth as he investigated past cold cases. Wouldn’t it be wonderful for all involved if he was able to close this one. Because as he says: someone knows something.

Water rates lacking compared to Arnprior To the editor:

This is regarding a story run the other week about our water rates. Coun. Tom Sidney is quoted as saying we have the best rates compared to our neighbours. Coun. Kate Windle claims we have one of the best rates in the province. I would like to see their research. My meagre look compared Renfrew to our neighbour in Arnprior, a community almost the same in population size. It has had to meet the same water standards as Renfrew by the provincial act imposed after the Walkerton incident. Arnprior has

a combination of water usage charges and base charges – a concept the same as us. Some municipalities such as Pembroke from what I can see have a flat rage charge. Posted on the Arnprior website the 2016 charges are as follows: combined water and waste charges are $3.01, the combined base charges for a 0.75 inch copper income line (which most residents have) is $27.34. For usage of 15 cubic metres of water per month or 30 cubic metres per billing charge, this amounts to $117.64.

Attitudes about rumours must change To the editor:

In Renfrew, similar charges are $4.46 per usage charge plus $76.14 for the base charge. For the same usage and billing period the Renfrew resident would be charged $209.94. This represents almost a doubling of what the residents in Arnprior, 30 kilometres away, would pay. I know that the water charges were a major concern in the last municipal election. There appears to be no tangible results since then.

It has been said that rumours can kill. Rumours are known to go through this community and others. When those rumours turn out to be false in a court of law one would think that the court of public opinion would agree. Such is not always the case. Some folks keep thinking that a person is guilty - which could be opposite to what the court says. That attitude has to change for the better of our communities and our future children. A person’s reputation can get tarnished when this happens as well as finding gainful employment is hindered. Would you, the reader, want this to happen to you or your families including your children? I think not and I hope you do too. Our courts are in tune. Are you? I am and looking forward to any comments.

Help send kids to camp From page 7

The honorary chair for the campaign is Renfrew County Warden Peter Emon, who worked for Aikens. Part of his job was to drop and pick up kids from camp. “It was a good experience to see how excited they were about it and watch them bring their crafts back and take them back to their parents and show some of the things they made, pottery or dream catchers,” said Emon. “It was a good experience for me and really drove home the importance of this program and Darlene for years was the face of the program I was the second person.” Emon is very pleased to be involved in the campaign. “It’s a great way to honour her efforts and a good way to raise our kids, it takes a community to raise children properly and allow them

Metroland’s Mike Mount retires Ashley Kulp

akulp@metroland.com

Metroland Media lost a community newspaper champion April 1 when its Metroland East vice-president and regional publisher closed his office door one last time. Mike Mount recently announced his retirement in mid-March, noting it was the right time to step away from the company he helped grow in order to spend more time with his wife and three daughters, as well as pursue other interests. “The short-term plan is to give myself some time and see what interests surface,” he remarked. “I’ve enjoyed my entire career and I hope I will find that next thing in life, both personally and professionally.” “If I can become a better golfer, everything else will be a bonus,” Mount joked. Torstar’s Peter Bishop, who came on board with Metroland East in March, will take over for Mount. “I have every confidence in his ability to continue to lead our region in a professional and progressive way,” Mount said of Bishop. The 53-year-old, who has a degree in mechanical engineering and Master of Business administration (MBA), first got his feet wet in the newspaper industry in 1993 thanks to his father Bob, who had owned the former Performance Printing Ltd. company for 15 years. He had formerly worked as a process engineer at Albany International in Albany, New York, where he lived with his wife Karen, who was born in the US. “He started with $1 million in revenue, so it was a small operation and he had just moved into the Lorne Street building in Smiths

Falls,” Mount noted. “My dad’s background was in printing.” “I had never worked in newspapers or printing,” he remarked. Nearing retirement and looking at succession planning, Bob gave Mike the opportunity to test the waters for three years. “I had an opportunity to take a position in Europe with the company I was working for so I had to decide what I wanted to do,” Mount said. “My father said if I wanted to come in and join the company, now would be the time.” He admitted he was torn on whether the smaller Performance Printing would be a good fit for him. “That was my biggest issue, whether I would enjoy working in Canada but I enjoyed the business like I enjoyed manufacturing,” he stated. He surprised himself when he found he was comfortable in the smaller company. He immersed himself in different departments, including pre-press, customer service and helping improve the company’s technology. It was important for Mount to try and relate to the different departments to understand their challenges. “I think over the period before becoming president, I probably had done almost every job,” he said. Once he had put his time in, he was named vice-president and five years later, eventually president. It was under his guidance Performance Printing and the EMC group of community newspapers, saw great growth, going from a market that included Smiths Falls, Perth, Almonte/Carleton Place, Kemptville and St. Lawrence, to Ottawa, Kingston and Belleville. “Being able to grow was fun, that’s the part I enjoyed the most,”

he admitted. “I loved buying new companies and adding newspapers.” “We took five papers to 26 and went from 64,000 (circulation) to half a million papers delivered to doors,” Mount added, which prompted several press expansions, as well as a bigger online presence. Mike immersed himself in the community while at the helm of Performance Printing as well. He served on the board of the Perth & Smiths Falls District Hospital and was also credited as the first business to make a large commitment ($100,000) to the Smiths Falls hospital site’s redevelopment campaign. Accolades also came in from business organizations with Mount being named the Smiths Falls Chamber of Commerce’s Business Person of the Year in 2003. That period of growth in a short amount of time in the mid-2000s was exciting, but Mount credits a dedicated team, including former publisher Duncan Weir and Peter O’Leary, former chief operating officer (then regional general manager of Metroland East) with Performance Printing’s success. Over the course of a year, he said during discussions it became clear that selling the company would be the best option to secure its future. “It made more sense for the company and for everybody to sell the whole company versus trying to form a partnership,” he said. It’s a partnership he doesn’t regret. “Metroland is an excellent company and they are committed to newspapers, printing and media,” he commented. “I couldn’t have found a better partner and I feel fortunate that it all worked out for them and for us.” Nearly five years later and after an expansion into the former Stanley Tools building, which serves as Metroland East’s distribution centre, Mount believes he’s leaving the company he helped build in good hands. “There isn’t a better organization in our industry that understands what we do and is committed to journalism and newspapers,” he stressed. Addressing the changes to the industry, Mount feels there will always be a place for the community newspaper. “Newspapers and publishing is always about connecting to your customers and to an audience. There are lots of different medias that can do that, but community newspapers are one of the strongest ways you can connect with people, particularly in smaller markets,” he said. “The changes to digital give more ways for people to access the information.”

Shoe Lounge grand opening set for April 9 at 260 Raglan St. Tiffany Lepack

tlepack@metroland.com

Shoe lovers, you’re in luck - there’s a new shopping option in downtown Renfrew. The Shoe Lounge was located at Dash of Fab but is moving to a new larger location with its grand opening at 260 Raglan St. South on April 9 from 5 to 10 p.m. Owner Jill Soucie praises the support she has received at Dash of Fab. “The relationship has been fabulous, they have been so encouraging and supportive,” said Soucie. She is also thankful for the support of her husband Brian. “He helped bring my vision to life,” said Soucie. “He didn’t miss a beat and helped my dream come true.” Soucie retired Feb. 28 of last year after 20 years at Canada Post and opened the Shoe Lounge. March 19 marked one year in business. It has been quite the journey. Soucie calls the new location very girly and pretty. “It’s a little girl’s dream come true,” she said. “You walk in and you don’t want to leave. It’s like walking into a dressing room come

alive.” The store will be selling women’s fashion, shoes and more. “There will be other things too that I will present at the grand opening,” said Soucie. She thinks other women will consider the store a heavenly experience. “It’s every woman’s dream. It’s like a man cave but a women’s cave in Cinderella style,” said Soucie. “I think women will be pleasantly surprised.” Soucie says it’s a really cool new location. “I encourage people to come because the experience will be quite unexpected, you really won’t want to leave,” said Soucie. “It will leave you wanting to come back just for the experience. It’s that nice.” She knows everyone is looking for a shoe that is just right. “Your outfit is never complete until you get that right shoe,” said Soucie. “We are all Cinderella looking for the perfect glass slipper.” The grand opening on April 9 is billed as a chance to ‘Come and Make your Celebrity appearance at a Red Carpet Event.” The big opening runs from 5 to 10 p.m. at 260 Raglan St. South, for more information call 613-570-4035.

Is Renfrew the next One Horse Town? nominee Dean Brody will be joined by fellow top Canadian country music artists Chad Brownlee and River Town Saints at One Horse Town. Coors Banquet will bring fans closer to this exciting country music experience by once again partnering with CMT. CMT will be live on location filming the One Horse Town concert experience and will use the footage to produce three TV concert specials to air in late 2016. “Being from a small town in BC, I grew up having to drive to see my favourite artists, and only dreamt of having them perform in my hometown,” says Dean Brody, Canadian country artist from Jaffray, British Columbia, a town of 810 people. “This is why I couldn’t be more excited to bring a one-of-a-kind country music experience to a small town like the one I grew up in.” SOCIAL MEDIA

The hunt for Canada’s next One Horse Town is about to begin. Last year, the quaint town of Lacombe, AB was crowned Canada’s One Horse Town, earning itself a legendary concert experience featuring Tim Hicks and the Roadhammers. This year, Coors Banquet has returned, upping the ante with ninetime CCMA winner Dean Brody. The contest, which officially opens on April 11, asks residents in towns across the country to submit a picture sharing their small town spirit with Coors Banquet via social media. Following the nomination period, submitted towns will be narrowed down to six finalists, before Canadians vote for the one small town that will receive this once in a lifetime country music event. “Brewed exclusively in Golden, Colorado, a town of 20,000 people, Coors Banquet takes immense pride in our small town heritage. Through One Horse Town we connect with residents of small towns across Canada to celebrate the pride we all have for our communities,” says Nicole Wolff, marketing manager, Coors Banquet. “This year we wanted to build upon the amazing experience we had last year in Lacombe, Alberta, and reward the truly hard working and passionate people who live in small towns across Canada.” This year, 2016 Juno Fan Choice and Country Album of the Year

Lauren Campbell-Brunke of Renfrew Collegiate Institute (RCI) placed second in the senior essay division with her essay ‘Freedom Had a Cost.’ To make it to district, Lauren placed first at the branch and zone contests. Alexandra Wright of Admaston Public School placed second in the junior essay division with her essay ‘Why I Am Proud of My Great Grandfather.” Alexandra placed first at branch and zone competitions to qualify for district.

“We are delighted with the efforts of these two students and say thank you for your good work and taking part in the legion’s remembrance contest,” said Ella Box, youth education chair. The need to use Renfrew County ambulances and paramedics in Ottawa should be moderated by a decision by a city council to add a dozen new paramedics this year. During its March 23 meeting, City council unanimously approved the hires, as well as the buying of four emergency response vehicles for the Ottawa Paramedic Service. “This is a very important issue across the city and this is a core service that needs to be equivalent across all wards in the city, and this motion will help this balance out,” said Osgoode Coun. George Darouze, who seconded West Carleton-March Coun. Eli El-Chantiry’s motion calling for more immediate resources. The bid for change was to ensure council’s priority – and the community’s expectation – of delivering “quality paramedic services within established response times,” according to the motion. The decision to bring on more personnel and beef up the paramedic fleet is in response to a 23-per-cent increase in paramedic response volumes over the past five years. The motion was also in response to concerns from rural residents, both inside and outside city boundaries, that ambulance service in their areas is being syphoned off to attend to urban demands. Renfrew County had asked for a meeting with city officials to share concerns about the increasing number of its ambulances, especially those from Arnprior and Renfrew, that had taken local patients into Ottawa only to have to stay there for hours at a time to handle city calls. County ambulances were also being used to respond to calls in the city’s rural areas, such as West Carleton, while ambulances from its stations are busy in the city core. “As a result of increasing response volumes, designated rural resources are often required to respond to the urban core where demand is greatest,” the city motion states. “Consequently, this creates a greater reliance on surrounding municipalities, which are then required to respond to the city’s rural wards.” Council was prompted to ask staff to review paramedic services to identify operational needs and efficiencies now and in the future.

As a result of increasing response volumes, designated rural resources are often required to respond to the urban core where demand is greatest. Consequently, this creates a greater reliance on surrounding municipalities, which are then required to respond to the city’s rural wards. That review is expected to be completed this spring, but council recognized “an immediate need” for more paramedics and the vehicles that will support them, according to the motion. The new hires, which represent a “part-year budget requirement of $780,000,” will be funded from the city’s provision for one-time and unforeseen expenses, while the cost of adding to the paramedic vehicle fleet is estimated at $260,000. Of that, $220,000 will come from the paramedic service’s development charge account, while the remaining $40,000 will come out of the citywide reserve fund. The review of the paramedic service and its future needs “will be considered by council prior to the development of the 2017 draft operating and capital budget city council approval,” El-Chantiry told his colleagues around the table. The question of how the expense will be divvied up between the city and the province was raised by Kanata North Coun. Marianne Wilkinson. “As in our normal process, any additions we fund the first year and then the province automatically adds it to our base and funds their 50 per cent next year,” said Ottawa paramedic Chief Anthony Di Monte. Mayor Jim Watson thanked El-Chantiry, Darouze as well as Gloucester-Southgate Coun. Diane Deans, who chairs the city’s community and protective services committee. They “worked to find a very admirable solution,” he said, before also highlighting the efforts of Di Monte and his paramedic staff.

Renfrew icemaker shines on Brier and national sheets Tiffany Lepack

tlepack@metroland.com

Renfrew’s Jon Wall was one of the icemakers at the 2016 Tim Hortons Brier in Ottawa. “It was a little nerve racking but I thought I was ready for it,” said Wall. “It’s definitely a lot of work on your own.” Wall worked there for four years

eventually becoming the head ice tech. “Dwayne showed me of the basics of pebbling and scraping,” said Wall.

0611.R0013309417

Making the perfect curling sheet is an art form, one that Renfrew’s own Jon Wall is perfecting all over the world. Wall was on the ice-making team at the Tim Hortons Brier in Ottawa and is now out east making more championship ice. Wall grew up in the Ottawa Valley. He graduated from Arnprior and District High School and spent his summers on his family’s farm near Renfrew, which he now calls home. He says he has been really focused on making ice for the last 10 years but it all started when he wanted to curl after school in Arnprior. “I was a competitive curler, if I wanted to practice, I had to pebble my own ice, so I was a little bit self taught,” said Wall. He moved to Ottawa to attend Algonquin College, he graduating in 2009 from the recreation facility management program. While there he worked at the Ottawa Curling Club. Slam of Curling events. “I learned the art of ice making from him,” said Wall. “Everything I learned about big events came from him. How to maintain championship ice, learning the skills and what you have to do in any building to make better ice conditions.” In 2014, he started to work with the Canadian Curling Association and has travelled across the country making ice: 2014 the Canadian Seniors Championship in Yellowknife, 2014 the Canadian Mixed Championships in North Bay, along with the Brier this year he just finished working the Canadian Seniors Championships in Nova Scotia. Last year he took over the ice making contract at the Renfrew Curling Club. “A lot of it is trying to help out and give back,” said Wall. “It’s a nice fit, a good way to make sure I get home for a couple of days.” He says it’s nice working in the Valley. “Whenever I get back everyone is happy to see me, there are more personal questions after a trip than worrying about their own wants with the ice.” See BRIER, page 27

Another successful race season comes to a close Anne Lefebvre

Despite rainy days, freezes and thaws, Calabogie Ski Racing Club’s alpine athletes managed to conquer the slopes again this year. Thanks to the grooming efforts of Calabogie Peaks and Western Quebec’s ski hills (Mont Ste. Marie, Camp Fortune, Edelweiss, Mont Cascades and Vorlage), and the tireless work of countless volunteers, races were held without a hitch despite the unfavourably warm winter weather. The U18 FIS racers closed their season with championships and a slalom at Mount Antoine in Mattawa. In championships, Tarik Hamrouni (Barrhaven) placed second overall with strong performances in GS at Calabogie Peaks and slalom at Camp Fortune. Meanwhile, Alex Duff (Pembroke), Nicholas Caves (Barrhaven), and Jake Yantha (Combermere) went 1-2-3 in a Mount Antoine slalom March 27. Connor Maclean (Manotick) also posted a top 10 finish in this race. Alex’s season is not quite over, as his strong results in FIS racing this year led to the honour of him being selected to attend the Ontario Ski Team Selection Camp in April in Nakiska, Alta. The U16 group travelled to Collingwood in early March to compete at provincials, then closed their season out with championships March 26-27. Pembroke racer Sam Duff’s four provincial podiums guaranteed him a spot at the CanAm races at Mont Tremblant March 17-20, which feature the best racers from all over Eastern Canada and the United States. He then went on to win the overall CanAm Championship, sealing the deal with an 18th place in Super G, a third in GS, and a win in the slalom. This in turn qualified him to join Team Canada at the Whistler Cup in British Columbia, where he will compete with the best 14-and 15-yearold racers from all over the world. Calabogie Ski Racing is incredibly proud to have one of their own representing the club on the international stage! Sean Swayze of Braeside also qualified for the CanAms

Noah Matthews of Calabogie speeds down the slalom course. after several top 15 finishes at provincials. This is quite an accomplishment for a firstyear U16 athlete. Sean also finished 10th for first years in the championship GS March 26 at Calabogie Peaks. The other U16s finished their season with some rather mixed results. Provincials provided a multitude of spectacular crashes, but not so many finishes. Jack Alexander (Carp), having been unable to complete a race at this time, redeemed himself with a thirdplace finish at Mount Antoine slalom and a sixth place for first years in GS Championships. Connor Allen (Manotick) made good use of the safety netting during one of his GS races at provincials, Tyler Lefebvre (Calabogie) spent more time hiking than skiing during his slalom races, Liam Maclean (Manotick) slid on his side not skis, and Jack Hamilton (Ottawa) actually snapped his ski into two places during one run. However, Connor, Tyler, and Liam finished at least one race, and skied complete races at Mount Antoine and Calabogie Peaks to finish off the season, while Jack managed a personal best 14th place in one run of his GS final. Owen Barr (Carp) and Aiden Keuninckx (Perth) were more consistent at provincials,

and each of them survived the final slalom at Camp Fortune to attain a personal best - top 10 for their age groups. Eric Davidson (Burnstown) raced in the GS at Calabogie Peaks and skied two clean runs. The U16 girls fared better. Lauren Campbell-Brunke (Renfrew) pulled off a seventh place GS finish at provincials, while Alexa Loudiadis (Ottawa) skied to 15th in GS. Alexa also emerged the U16 second year female winner at championships while Lauren took the gold in Mount Antoine slalom. Eve Yantha (Combermere) also hit the podium at the Mount Antoine race. Emma Schreider (Kingston) finished two clean slalom runs at provincials. Alyssa Steggall (Stittsville) skied several great single runs, but was not able to put together two runs for a clean race. The U14 gang competed at provincials in Collingwood March 12-16 and immediately followed up with championships March 19-20. The provincials experience proved to be excellent preparation, as each of the racers excelled at championships. Carp native Sam Alexander’s top 15s in Collingwood also earned him a spot at U14 CanAms in Sugarloaf, Maine March 25-28. Luke Hansen (Renfrew) won

both the GS at Camp Fortune and the slalom at Calabogie Peaks to come out as the overall champion. Sam Alexander and Wesley Matthews (Calabogie) shared second place overall for the weekend. Lucas Zohr’s (Eganville) 13th place at provincials gave him the confidence to speed down the slalom course to grab a fifthplace ribbon for second year boys. James Gaffney (Deep River) left it all on the course with two top 15 finishes. For the first year boys, Carson Lefebvre (Calabogie) snagged the silver medal in GS, while Jeremy Van Grunsven (Odessa) placed third overall. Jack Carnahan (Ottawa) and Aidan Maclean (Manotick) had excellent runs as well. The girls laid down their best runs of the season too. Bailey Stonham of Arnprior hit the podium for the first time with a fifth place ribbon in first year girls’ GS. Olivia D’Aoust (Kingston) was right behind her. Kasey Keyes (Nepean) and Chloe Hall (Jasper) landed well inside the top twenty for second year U14s. The U12s finished off their season with a slalom at Vorlage March 19 and a GS at Edelweiss March 20. Louise Stonham (Arnprior) carved to second place in the slalom and Carly Alexander (Carp) placed 15th in the GS. Marissa Cannon (Ottawa), Nicole Duff (Pembroke), and Sarah McKittrick (Kanata) all had strong slalom races. Tori Cotter (Ottawa) and Rachel Ivay (Ottawa) shone in the GS. Noah Matthews (Calabogie) climbed the podium with his silver for GS. Kanata’s Ayden Gropp and Stefan Martincevic showed their improvement this season by landing in the top thirty. Finally, the U10s topped off their races with championships March 12-13. Thomas Carnahan (Ottawa) won the overall championship with victories in slalom and GS. Philip Lungu (Ottawa) was close behind, snagging third in GS. Finley Fletcher (Calabogie) earned his very first ribbon with a fourth place in GS. Jackson Kunstadt-Landon (Stittsville), Riley Cotter (Ottawa), Michael Atherton (Ottawa), Ben Gerein (Carp) and Luke Gerein (Carp) skied two clean runs on each day.

Brier ice presents challenges for Wall From page 25

The Brier, the Canadian men’s curling championship, was held in Ottawa from March 5 to 13 with the country’s top curlers on the ice. Wall had an exciting time at the event but didn’t watch a lot of the games other than seeing how the rocks travelled down the ice. “It was a good experience,” said Wall. “I thought I would be a lot more nervous on the main stage, but I didn’t feel any of those nerves. Maybe it was because I was home or because I knew the teams, it felt like an everyday event for me.” Dave Merklinger was the head icemaker at the Brier and it was the first time Wall had the chance to work with him so they had to get use to each other’s style. Merklinger has been in the ice making business for 40 years and was impressed with Wall. “He did a real good job,” said Merklinger. “He’s a good student and I know he learned lots, that’s what it’s all about, to teach the younger ones. He helped me out a lot.” Both agreed keeping the ice in championship shape was a challenge. “It was as hard as I’ve ever had to work to let them make good shots, it was only because the tone of work we put in,” said Merklinger. The Brier was played at TD Place in downtown Ottawa, an old building with no dehumidifier and no air conditioning. “They just had a pile of horsepower in the plant and nothing to extract the heat easily,” said Wall on the conditions. Between the games they had to open all of the doors to try to get rid of the heat. The rain added more challenges. “On Wednesday and Thursday when it rained those were the toughest days, the humidity kept building and building,” said Wall. The challenges continued as a number of players

criticized the ice condition, something Wall says is hard to hear. “When they are giving you criticism, they are just trying to let you know what it’s doing, you try and drown out the tone and listen,” explained Wall. “Even if it is bad they are still trying to tell you what’s going on with the ice so you can make it better.” Most players knew it was out of the icemakers’ control. Overall, Wall was happy with the ice conditions and felt 90 per cent of the feedback was positive. “It was tricky, the frost did play an optical illusion and that’s hard on the players because it means taking one or two points and there is a lot on the line for them.” Having the Brier in Ottawa didn’t feel like it was home for him because he was so focused. “It was neat to be at home and be on one of the biggest stages of curling,” said Wall. “It was a proud moment for all of my family and friends to see what I do.” He father Graham had never seen him at work before. “It was a special moment to have him there.” Wall also celebrated his birthday on March 11, so he was able to celebrate a little bit with friends and family. Another special moment for him came when Merklinger thanked the ice crew on TSN in a special feature video. “That was a pretty gratifying moment because we put in a lot of hard work to make the ice as good as we could,” said Wall. He has also made ice in Denmark and China, which he says was definitely a different experience than the Ottawa Valley. Wall hoped he would be curling at the elite level but is happy where he is now. “Most days it doesn’t feel like work,” said Wall. “It is definitely nice to travel the country and I am very fortunate to be in the position I am.”

Filmmaker investigates Calabogie cold case Derek Dunn

derek.dunn@metroland.com

He had worked on several cold cases over his career; so when friends and others kept asking David Ridgen to focus on the tragic case of a little boy’s disappearance in his own hometown, he was puzzled. “I didn’t have an good answer. And that started bugging me,” said Ridgen, the renowned awardwinning filmmaker who grew up in Arnprior. His current project is the truecrime CBC podcast Someone Knows Something. As writer, producer and host of the series, Ridgen chose the case of Adrien McNaughton for the premier season. The podcast explains how the fiveyear-old disappeared during a family fishing trip in 1972. Ridgen grew up not far from the McNaughtons, who still live in town near Mclean Park. He knew the story of the shy, blond-haired boy who vanished without a trace from Holmes Lake near Calabogie. Thousands of people participated in the search, including a group from Garrison Petawawa. Many in the area still remember participating in the search, or helping in other ways, or hearing the story from older relatives. “Small towns are like big families that way,” Ridgen said. “It affects everybody. Everything gets scrutinized to death.” So why didn’t he have a “good answer” to take on the case. Ridgen made four investigative films about alleged cold cases for CBC. In 2009 it was A Garden of Tears, about the 1975 murder of

Ridgen seeks answers in cold cases from across North America From page 31

Weeks later, the U.S. Department of Justice initiated a Grand Jury proceeding into the Morris case. However, Ridgen defies labels. Part filmmaker, part private investigator, part crime journalist: he pays less attention to genres than following his passion. He did a documentary on a controversial political scientist titled American Radical: The Trials of Norman Finkelstein, winning an audience award at the Montreal International Documentary Festival. He filmed people seeking spiritual enlightenment by digging their own graves and being buried in them overnight, calling it Buried Alive. He documented Palestinian refugees in Lebanon; On the Borders of Gardens earned him a prestigious Canadian Association of Journalists Award. His first feature drama was Memento. Before that he made Canadian Images of Vietnam with his brother Robert and appeared in the

Adrien McNaughton in 1972. National Galley of Canada installation Clash: Conflict and its Consequences. MISSISSIPPI COLD CASE

Ridgen is perhaps best known for Mississippi Cold Case about the murder of two African American boys, which led state officials to re-open an

investigation into Klu Klux Klan member James Ford Seale. He was sentenced to three concurrent life sentences for conspiracy and kidnapping. The film and filmmaker won many awards. So, again, with a wealth of experience behind him, why didn’t he have a good answer for turning down the hometown case? Ridgen explained that he isn’t the type of camera personality who blows into the lives of grieving families with an entourage promising notoriety and more, just to leave again without ever following up. He does a lot of research beforehand to determine whether or not a project has some chance of producing new leads. He meets the primary stakeholders on his own. He tells them that he is reasonably confident that with enough hard work and time, somebody who knows something might be found. “You give them hope,” he said. And offering hope to the

vulnerable family members of victims cannot be done lightly, he indicated, especially when they are connected to family and friends in your hometown. He is pleased with this first year of Somebody Knows Something. The former CBC (and TVO) employee who now freelances for the public broadcaster said the podcast is getting good ratings and producing new information. Ridgen – a Queen’s University graduate who wanted to become a teacher - has come a long way on both the big and small screens since his film debut, an out-of-focus animated school assignment. Filmmaking got in his blood early. Toronto is base for Ridgen, who also has a cottage on Marshalls Bay near Arnprior. He returns often to visit family and friends, and has even filmed in the area. He said it is often easier to obtain permission from private property owners and others to get the shots he needs

when they learn he is a local. From Walter Zadow to Arnprior District High, Ridgen describes his upbringing as “idyllic” in that he was a friend to a wide array of people, even though the town – like many small towns in Canada - was far from multicultural. He didn’t play on the football team, but en-

joyed swimming and plenty other activities and services that were available. He had teachers who inspired and others who helped form his character. “I do my own thing and I’ve managed to cobble together a living as an independent producer,” he said. “I believe anybody can do anything they want to if they follow their passion.”

Register today at www.BeADonor.ca The Trillium Gift of Life Network (TGLN) kicked off BeADonor month (April) by urging Ontarians to register their consent for organ and tissue donation and encourage others to do the same. There are more than 1,600 people waiting for a life-saving organ transplant and every three days someone dies waiting for one, points out the organization in a news release. Under a third (29 per cent) of Ontarians, 3.4 million out of an eligible 11.9 million, are registered donors. The TGLN notes that when families have evidence that their loved one wanted to be an organ donor, they are more likely to consent. Where there is no proof, families consent only half of the time. “We often hear from donor families that their loved one’s gift has brought them solace in their grief,” said TGLN president Ronnie Gavsie. “When a potential donor is registered, families have the comfort of knowing they are affirming their loved one’s wishes.” REGISTER

Throughout BeADonor month, Ontario’s hospitals, schools, elected officials and community groups doing their part to inspire everyone to register and have the conversation about organ and tissue donation. “Now is the perfect time to join the 3.4 million Ontarians who have proudly registered as organ and tissue donors,” says Dr. Eric Hoskins, Ontario’s Minister of Health and Long Term Care. “It takes two minutes at www. BeADonor.ca. One donor can save up to eight lives and enhance up to 75 more through the gift of tissue. Why wouldn’t you save a life if you could?” TO BE A DONOR

The TGLN notes that: • anyone over the age of 16 can register and people of all ages and medical histories should consider themselves potential donors; • religion should not be a barrier to registration, as all major religions support organ donation or view it as an individual’s decision;

• one can change or withdraw the decision to donate at any time; • even if a person has signed a donor card, they still need to register online or by visiting a ServiceOntario centre, as donor cards are no longer used in Ontario; SOCIAL MEDIA

Once you’ve registered your consent, share your reason with friends and family on social media, using #BeADonor and #MyReason, urges the TGLN. In 2015, 269 deceased and 279 living donors gave the gift of life to 1,086 transplant recipients. More than 2,100 tissue donors helped improve the lives of thousands through the gift of eyes, bone, skin, or heart valves. Since 2003, almost 12,000 Ontarians have received a lifesaving organ transplant. For more information or to become a donor visit: www. BeADonor.ca

Since You’ve Been Gone Since you’ve been gone, the years have passed, We miss you every day. Since you’ve been gone, the time has changed, our lives in many ways. And looking back we saw the way you kept our family strong. But things just aren’t the same, since you’ve been gone. Since you’ve been gone, we’ve missed you so, the sorrow still inside. Since you’ve been gone, so many nights we’ve thought of you and cried. Although they say that time will heal, It’s time for moving on, Our hearts have not been whole, since you have gone. Kitty proved to be a real good ‘mouser’

Mother said if she lived to be 100, she’d never get used to the common housefly or the mice, both of which were in ample supply on our farm in Renfrew County. The flies, fortunately, were only around in warm weather, but the mice had no respect for the seasons, and it didn’t seem to matter if the snow was knee deep, or we were gasping for air on a hot summer day, the mice had minds of their own. In the cold weather, our summer kitchen kept our food chilled or frozen. An old table sat in the middle of the floor, and Mother was always frightened a wayward mouse would climb up a table leg, and help itself to whatever was there. Her solution was to have Father fill four tobacco tins with coal oil and put one under each leg of the table. Any mouse daring to reach the top of the table had a fatal bath in the coal oil, and the food was safe. Of course, this only worked in the summer kitchen. Inside the house was another matter. No one knew how they got into the house, but it wasn’t unusual, while we sat around the kitchen table at night, to see a tiny mouse scurry across the floor, or run tight against the baseboards. And Mother, who could sense a mouse a mile away, would fly into a state of hysteria, demand Father get the broom, order the brothers onto the chase, and chaos rained until the mouse was either caught, or found a means of escape. Silently, I rooted for the mouse. Now, Mother would not allow any dogs or cats in the house. “They belong in the barn,” she’d say when I would beg to bring in one of my pets, which included a hoard of cats, one I especially like and simply called Kitty, or our old Collie dog, which, like just about every other dog in Northcote, was called Sport. Father, a third generation on our farm, told stories of the pets he had as a young boy, and how the dogs and cats were just as comfortable in the house as they were in the barns. But Mother wouldn’t budge. They belonged in the barn, and that’s all there was to it. Spring was breaking early that year, and for some unexplained reason, we were seeing more mice than usual, both in the summer kitchen, and in the house. Mother was on constant alert, and since she hated mousetraps as much as she hated the mice, catching the little critters seemed to be the only solution. That is, until that night at supper, Father, who my sister Audrey said later, brought up the subject on purpose, said how he saw Kitty snare mouse after mouse in the barn. “She’s a real mouser, that one is,” he said, without taking a pause between mouths full of supper. “Never saw anything like it, and I’ve lived on this here farm forever...but that Kitty sure can catch a mouse if one happens to cross her path. She is sure cutting down on the mouse population.” Mother, with a fork halfway to her mouth, asked Father if he was sure it was Kitty. He said he caught her in the act at least a dozen times. It was probably more coincidence than anything else, but that night, at least three mice interrupted our card game at the kitchen table. By the time, they were chased out into the woodshed, or knocked senseless with the broom, it was bedtime. The whole evening had been wasted battling the mice. The very next morning, just before we headed for

school, Mother said she thought it was time Kitty was brought into the house, where she’d be trained to sleep in a box beside the stove, eat in her own dish (heaven forbid that a cat would eat out of a bowl we used at the kitchen table), and if she was caught within a mile of one of our beds, she would be banished back out to the barn.

My sister Audrey said she was sure Kitty could read Mother’s mind. “Cats are pretty smart, you know,” she said, and who was as thrilled as I was that, finally, I could have one of my pets in the house. No one knew what Kitty did with the mice she caught. Like a night burglar, most of her action was when we were in bed, but ever after, our house was free of mice. And Mother, on occasion could be seen dropping a piece of salt pork, or a spoonful of gravy into Kitty’s dish in gratitude. Finally, the mouse problem was under control. Sadly, nothing was discovered that could rid the house of the common housefly, which remained the bane of Mother’s existence all the time we lived on the farm in Renfrew County. Turnout augurs well for duplicate’s third year Lewis MacDonald

Renfrew Duplicate Bridge Club

Ten-and-one-half tables competed at MaTe-Way Activity Centre March 30 in a nearrecord turnout. Now into its third year, duplicate bridge in Renfrew appears to be on a solid footing. The membership records players from Pembroke, Eganville, Arnprior and Almonte, as well as the Renfrew area. This wide support of the club is much appreciated. Always keen for new members, organizers were delighted to welcome a new couple - Pat and Jim Thompson – who found the experience exhilarating. Before the 1 p.m. start of regular action, president Lila Paddock conducted a general meeting, which saw the adoption of a new constitution for the Renfrew Club.

Two pairs were successful at small slam contracts of six diamonds. This uncommon achievement was managed by Jeannie Yagminas and Mona Brydges and the duo of Phillipa Baran and Nancy Cavanagh. Congratulations to the March 30 winners:

The domestic science section of Renfrew Fair needs you Renfrew Fair

As the month of September approaches we all think about the Renfrew Fair. Why not think about entering your homemade jams, jellies, preserves or pickles. If that is not your cup of tea and you prefer to bake; we have categories in bread making, muffin making, cookie making, squares and pies. We even have a gluten free category! Our new exhibitor section is for first-time exhibitors and these people can also enter into the open section of the domestic science. Our preliminary list for the 2016 Renfrew Fair is now ready and can be picked up at the office in the Armouries. Also found in our area are a host of specials that incorporate homemade baking and your creativity in the displaying of the wares. If sweetness is in your nature why

not enter our homemade candy section? The past entries in this section have been few and far between so our committee is hoping we have exhibitors that can help spruce up our display. This is the second year for our cake decorations entry. We were disappointed last year with no entries and hope this year maybe two or three of you will take up the challenge. The cake does not have to be real; it will be judged on decorations only and the theme for the cake will appear on the preliminary list when you pick it up at the fair office. Hopefully, your interest has been piqued and you are thinking about entering in the fair this fall. As a committee we want to stress these factors of consideration when you begin thinking about entering in the fair. Firstly, and foremost, read your fair book. This book contains

many rules, regulations and important facts you need to know as an exhibitor to the fair. Secondly, when you are entering under the domestic science part of the fair, read the requirements for each category that you plan on entering under. Thirdly, make sure your exhibitor tags are filled out and attached to your entry as described in your fair book and that you have filled out the exhibitor entry sheet found in the middle of your book. Fourthly, feel free to call the chairperson of the committee with questions you may have, or contact Judy Dobec in the office at 613-432-5331 The domestic science committee looks forward to seeing you at the 2016 Renfrew Fair, which runs Sept. 7-11. Happy baking, jamming, pickling, preserving, bread making, muffin making, cookie and square making and pies.
