Stay clear and stay safe this Easter weekend Warm weather means thin ice and fast moving water near generating stations With winter behind us, many people will be heading outdoors to celebrate the arrival of spring this Easter weekend. Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is reminding people to continue to exercise caution when around Ontario’s waterways. “Please keep your family safe by paying attention to the warning signs, fences and booms around all hydroelectric stations,” says Mike Martelli, president, renewable gen-
eration and power marketing. “Start the spring off with a safety focus and learn more about OPG’s water safety program at opg.com/watersafety.” While the water and the land around hydroelectric generating stations and dams may be tempting, OPG is warning people that the flows are fast even when they appear calm, and areas still covered in ice will become thin as temperatures rise. OPG property and facilities are clearly marked with warning signs and barriers.

Major grant approved for Raglan Street reconstruction SHERRY HAAIMA sherry.haaima@metroland.com
Renfrew’s main street is going to get a muchneeded overhaul. Town of Renfrew officials have announced a successful application to the Connecting Links provincial funding program that will see more than $6 million in improvements to Raglan Street, from Hall Avenue to the Bonnechere River Bridge. The province will fund $3 million of the $6.5 million project, said development and works director Mike Asselin. “This is a very important project for Renfrew,” he said. “We feel good in that we’ve been seeking funding for that project for a couple of years. We weren’t approved last year but were advised to reapply.” A meeting with Minister of Transport Steven Del Duca in December was positive and local officials were told the application was a good one. The project is in line with recent improvements to some of the town’s major streets, including Lisgar Avenue and Veterans Memorial Boulevard. “There’ll be a complete reconstruction from building face to building face,” said Asselin. “New roads, curbs and sidewalks. We’re going to look at the water systems and sanitary systems to make sure we’re doing any necessary repairs or relining pipes when we should be.”
The next step is to prepare requests for proposal for engineering surveys and retaining surveyors to initiate the surveys, said Asselin. “Design and tendering will be completed in 2017,” said Asselin, with construction to following in 2018. “We’re looking to do construction in one year - intensive construction - to minimize the impacts as much as possible.” The draft of the downtown streetscape master plan and urban design guidelines will be presented Tuesday, April 18 (6-7:30 p.m.) at a meeting at town hall and officials will be looking for public input before plans are finalized. It’s been some time since work was done on Renfrew’s main street. “The sidewalks were redone in the 1980s,” said Asselin. “And the road surface and curbs were replaced in the year 2000.” He noted the Renfrew Business Improvement Area was involved in helping to upgrade the streetlights, poles and signs. “We’ll be looking to build upon that work and use the streetscape master plan to guide the next detailed design,” said Asselin. The upcoming work will be a substantial project, he said. “Through the design process, we’ll work very carefully with merchants in the downtown to try to mitigate as much as possible the impacts of construction,” said Asselin. “We’re fortunate to have streets like Argyle and Plaunt to help take the load off of main street and still provide access from the rear.”

Thomas Samuel Walker was reading letters from his family in Renfrew when he was shot in the neck in a fox hole on Vimy Ridge. Walker died on April 9, 1917 in the nation-defining battle in France. On Sunday, April 9, 100 years since his death, his great nephew Fred Epps from Rockland made the trip to Renfrew to witness the ceremony hosted by Branch 148 of the Royal Canadian Legion. Before the ceremony, Epps said it was the least he could do. “To honour him and come here,” he said as he held a picture of Walker and a single red rose. Epps said his great uncle signed up in Renfrew. “He enlisted at 16, he cheated to get in,” he said. Walker was a member of the 75th Battalion of the Canadian Infantry and was only in high school when he left for the First World War. Documents listed him as single, with his next of kin being his mother Mrs. Thomas Walker of Arnprior, with prior service with the Renfrew Collegiate Cadets. Walker is buried at the Canadian cemetery Neuville-St. Vaast, Pas de Calais, France. As Epps talked about his relative he became emotional as he recalled his visit to Vimy a few years ago, and what the epic battle means to Canada. “I get mixed emotions, I hate to see someone who is 17 die in action, but the end result is why I am here today,” said Epps. He hopes this day will be continued to be marked at the Renfrew cenotaph at Low Square. “I hope 100 years from now someone from my family will do the same thing I am doing today,” said Epps. After the ceremony he walked to the back of the cenotaph, where he noted they inverted his uncle’s first and last name, and placed the rose and the photo. The brief ceremony drew only a handful of people but it marked a battle, which most describe as the moment Canada become a nation, with all four divisions fighting together for the first time and taking the ridge. Victory came with a steep cost as 3,598 Canadians were killed and another 7,000 wounded. The ceremony was opened with O Canada followed by an opening prayer by Rev. Jim Kirkpatrick from St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Renfrew. “Receive our prayers and thanksgiving for those we remember this day,” said Kirkpatrick. “We recall the day our country became a nation when colonials marched up one side of Vimy and came down the other side of that hill victorious … Fulfil in those who saw combat the high purpose of your love and bring us, along with them, to your eternal joy reserved for all who love and serve you to the last measure of devotion, as did Jesus Christ our Lord.” Legion president Greg Walbeck set the scene for those gathered at the foot of the cenotaph. “In the fall the troops took up position at the base of the ridge and in the winter, they prepared to take the eightkilometre-long ridge, with tunnels, fencers, machine gun holes … this was one of the greatest battles of Canada,” said Walbeck. “This victory, by ordinary men, was a symbol of Canada’s abilities.” Dean Black played The Last Post, followed by the lament by the Renfrew Pipes and Drums and a reading of The Act of Remembrance by Walbeck. Comrade Harry Hanniman and second vice-president Cheryl Babcock laid a wreath at the base of the cenotaph. After the ceremony, Admaston’s Mike Quilty revealed the wartime medal of Joseph Ambrose Quilty who served with the 5th Canadian Infantry. “He was only 27 years old and was killed 100 years ago, at Vimy Ridge,” said Quilty of his relative was is buried in Pas de Calais, France. The announcement of his death was made in the Ren-
frew Mercury on Aug. 10, 1917. “Reeve Quilty of Admaston and the other members of his family received the official circumstances of death report of Pvt. J. Quilty who was killed in action on April 9 … Quilty was killed in action on April 9, 1917, whilst taking part in the attack on Vimy Ridge. He had just left a trench when a shell burst close to him, killing him.” As to why Quilty was at the ceremony, he said, “In his memory and all of the other soldiers who have gave their lives over the many conflicts ... (The battle) did define us, we went in as French Canadians, Polish Canadians, etc. … we came out Canadians, brothers and sisters in arms.”

Renfrew marks Autism Awareness month with rally TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com
People who live with autism yearn to be treated just like everyone else. Members of Community Living Renfrew County South held an Autism Awareness Rally at Low Square on April 5, celebrating being unique puzzle pieces. April is national Autism Awareness month, last Wednesday was Autism on the Hill day and Saturday, April 2 was also World Autism Day. Alana Peer, Renfrew Community Living support worker, explained the group couldn’t make it to Ottawa so they wanted to host their own rally. “It’s really about awareness for autism, but disability all around because whether we have a disability or not we are all a puzzle piece,” said Peer. “It’s mysterious and everyone fits together differently on the global scale, we all fit together to create a unique place to live.” The Autism Awareness Ribbon is a puzzle pattern that reflects the mystery and complexity of autism. The different shapes and colours represent the diversity of people and families living with the disorder and the brightness is a sign of hope. “It’s a really fun day of awareness,” added Peer. “We are lucky the town is so accepting. They recognize our folk, they have jobs in the community and treat them like real people because they are real people.” On its website, Autism Ontario describes the Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) as a lifelong neurological disorder that affects the way a person communicates and relates to the people and world around them. ASD can affect behaviour, social interactions, and one’s ability to communicate verbally. ASD is a spectrum disorder, which means that while all people with ASD will experience certain difficulties, the degree to which each person on the spectrum experiences these challenges will be different. “There’s lots of people who function in society on the scale and they lead very normal lives,” said Peer. Tina MacLaren, a support worker from Arnprior, said it’s key to raise awareness. “It’s so important that the people in the community see them as people and see the person before the disability.” As Peer addressed the crowd she gave them a key reminder to include everyone. “Everybody is a piece of the puzzle.”

There was damage done inside the residence and a suspect has been identified. The investigation is continuing. On Tuesday, April 4 the owner of a cottage on Dewar Avenue in McNab/ Braeside reported a break-in. The break-in happened sometime in the previous month, and it appeared the cottage had been slept in. Area artist busy with new workshops, shows SHERRY HAAIMA sherry.haaima@metroland.com
Abstract metal sculptor Jack Stekelenburg is gearing up for a busy season. The Walden Three Studios owner and Renfrew Art Guild president has shows and projects and workshops on the go that he’d like the public to know about. Stekelenburg recently exhibited at a three-week show in Toronto at the Art Square Gallery, across the street from the Art Gallery of Ontario.
“It was good, it was successful,” he said. “It was a wonderful opportunity to show my work in a major city.” On Father’s Day weekend, Stekelenburg will participate in Art in the Garden, an outdoor art exhibit and sale at Kiwi Gardens, near Perth. He will also show this summer at Art in the Park in Renfrew as well. One of the things he is most excited about is his new ‘create your own metal sculpture’ workshops. “It’s a one-day workshop that includes your very own piece of art, plus a light lunch,” he said.
He will provide one-onone instruction and help participants understand the process and compose their sculpture. He will then weld your pieces - usually six-to-eight - together. He’s thrilled to be sharing his craft.
“I just really like to encourage and inspire people,” said Stekelenburg. “Participants will have a great day.” More information is available on his website at www.waldenthreestudio. com, call 613-312-1374 or email jackstekelenburg@ hotmail.com .

Monthly Column by MPP John Yakabuski
Monthly Column – April 2017 April 9th, 1917 is without question one of the most important dates in Canadian history. Most Canadians have no trouble remembering that on Easter Monday, April 9th, 1917 Canadian soldiers began their assault on a strategic piece of land in Northern France known as Vimy Ridge. In 1914 Canada—whose external affairs were governed by the United Kingdom—became a participant in the First World War. The war was a result of political tensions and very complex European military alliances at the time. By the spring of 1917, the war had raged on for more than two-and-a-half years and had resulted in what amounted to a virtual stalemate. Previous attempts by the Allies to take Vimy had failed; the ridge was a long, high hill that afforded excellent viewing of the surrounding landscape. Germany had captured it early in the war and had held it during those earlier Allied assaults which had resulted in hundreds of thousands of casualties. The Canadians had been preparing for this attack since the autumn of 1916 and the battle would be the first time all four divisions of the Canadian Corps fought together as one army. Preparation for the attack included extensive mining operations whereby tunnels where dug beneath German lines and stacked with explosives to be set off at the appropriate times. Prior to the attack, the Germans were subjected to a massive artillery barrage which started over a week before the ground assault. During what the Germans would come to call the ‘Week of Suffering’ the Allies would fire over one million shells at German positions. The attack began at approximately 5:30 a.m. Canadian forces made tremendous progress early in the assault, but it would take four long days of heavy fighting to finally take control of the ridge. Many believed that with four separate lines of defence, the Germans had created an impenetrable wall that could not be broken. While there have been many Canadian victories since, the Battle of Vimy Ridge continues to stand as one of our proudest moments as a military force. The taking of Vimy Ridge by Canadian heroes, marked the emergence of the Canada we are so proud to call home a century later. In the words of Brigadier-General Alexander Ross: “It was Canada from the Atlantic to the Pacific on parade. I thought then, and I think today, that in those few minutes I witnessed the birth of a nation.” Canada’s contribution to what was termed The Great War and the War to End All Wars was most significant. With a population of less than eight million people, more than 650,000 would answer the call. At war’s end more than 66,000 had made the ultimate sacrifice and over 170,000 were wounded. We are ever grateful to our heroes of 100 years ago, those who followed them in military service, and all those who serve for us today. Lest We Forget. I would like to take this opportunity—on behalf of Vicky and our family—to wish you and yours a very Happy Easter. As Christians, it is one of our most important feasts when we celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Without His Resurrection, our faith would be without purpose. Please enjoy the celebration with family and friends and reflect on the many blessings we have received. The Renfrew Mercury - Thursday, April 13, 2017 7
OPINION
Connected to your community
Lest we forget Vimy Ridge As Canada marked the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge this week, it’s a good time to reflect on the connections we still have today to the men who gave their lives in Europe so long ago. Despite the passing of time, there are Canadians with us today who remember the real people who survived Vimy. Long lost family members. But even when our living connections to 1917 are gone, we should remember all of them and why they served. Canada – and so many Canadians – felt compelled to stand up to aggression. While the best policy is clearly to make every effort to avoid war, humans have yet to perfect that policy. Aggression, especially when the weak are attacked, makes our blood boil. Even when evil acts occur half a world away, Canadians have been willing to put their lives on the line, both on battlefields such as Vimy, and in peacekeeping operations.
We should be proud to be the product of a society that uses force as a last resort. We should be proud that we have no imperial ambitions. We don’t try to force anyone to act like us or be like us, Canada simply sets an example and hopes others will follow. This principle has cost the lives of many Canadians. Yet still the world sees inhumanity. It’s ironic – and despicable – that as we mark the anniversary of First World War battles, where poison gas was not uncommon, we see the same weapon of mass destruction used on the Syrian people. In honour of those who have died in all wars, Canada can continue to set the best example – the one set back in April 1917. Help those who need help. Use force only in defence of them, and the defence of ourselves. Just as the Canadians at Vimy hoped to do. Come November, poppies will feel a little more personal this year.

Concern remains surrounding physician-assisted suicide To the editor:
There is great concern among medical workers in Canada with regard to conscience rights surrounding euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide, now that these twin evils have been “legalized” by a Godless Supreme Court and federal government. And doctors and nurses have good reason to worry, since they are being ordered by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario to participate in euthanasia or physician-assisted suicide or else refer to someone who will. (As I told one doctor, if you refer someone to be killed, you are an accomplice to murder.) We may lose our best medical workers, who still believe in curing, not killing, as they either retire or move out of Canada, and we may very well end up with the dregs. But for heaven’s sake, the point is much more funda-
mental than conscience rights. It is that euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide are always just plain wrong. We must work to get that door (i.e. “legalization” of life taking) closed, even though it is a nearly impossible task now. We should have learned from the experiences of Holland, Belgium, Switzerland, Oregon, etc. -- nowhere have so called “safeguards” worked; and we have had years of warning, including by the Euthanasia Prevention Coalition. Now we have the broadest criteria for killing in the whole world, and I believe the figure of 744 people who chose physician-assisted suicideoff from “legalization” day of June 17, 2016 to Dec. 31, 2016 is really much higher. May God have mercy on Canada.

Potholes got you down? Cracks in the road got you bothered? It’s no surprise that Canadian winters are hard on roads. But with spring in sight, those road imperfections can no longer hide under a blanket of snow; that’s what makes it the perfect time of year to kick off Ontario’s Worst Roads Campaign. The CAA Worst Roads campaign is an opportunity for Ontarians to share insights on congestion, cycling and pedestrian infrastructure challenges, signal timing and confusing road signs. From motorists to pedestrians, truck drivers to cyclists; we want to hear from everyone about the shape our roads are in. “Road infrastructure across the province is always top of mind at this time of year,” says Christina Hlusko, president and CEO of CAA NEO. “Conditions like potholes can increase traffic congestion, strain existing roadways, and cause serious vehicular damage – in addition to putting both driver and pedestrian safety at risk.” Last year’s campaign received a strong response, garnering nominations for more than 2,500 roads from across the province. Next event in speaker series scheduled for April 20 ROB AINSWORTH
On the evening of March 9, I walked through the doors of the O’Brien Theatre in Renfrew to attend the fourth event in the first season of the Need to Know Speaker Series. Outside the doors was a table displaying a wide selection of Dr. Joe Schwarcz’s books, around which a number of people were gathered and talking with great animation. I made my way into the theatre proper and took my seat. The topic was nutrition and the speaker was a well-known and highly respected professor from McGill University, Dr. Joe Schwarcz. Dr. Schwarcz is also the director of McGill’s Office for Science and Society, an office that is, in the speaker’s words, dedicated to rescuing people from charlatans and their innumerable pseudoscientific claims. Dr. Schwarcz began his presentation by highlighting a series of scams and falsehoods that have been pedalled to the public in recent years, in the form of books as well as food products, all in order to make a single point: that we must critically appraise food, but that food is not a poison. Dr. Schwarcz used the current obsession with gluten and wheat as an example. Gluten, he said, is not a poison. Approximately one percent of the population has celiac disease and another six to seven percent have an intolerance to gluten, but that does not make gluten a poison. What we are really dealing with in the case of the vilification of gluten is the use of pseudoscientific claims being made to shape public opinion and make money in combination with a popula-
tion that lacks the proper scientific knowledge. Repeatedly, Dr. Schwarcz emphasized the importance of several points. Firstly, only the dose makes the poison – the key principle of toxicology. In one example, he explained that pesticide residues can be found on fruits and vegetables, but the dosage – the truly critical part – is measured in parts per trillion, far below the threshold that would pose a risk to humans. Secondly, people want simple solutions to complex problems, which then opens the door for the charlatans to enter with their miracle claims and their super foods while one food scare succeeds another: eat eggs, don’t eat eggs; butter is good, butter is bad, butter is good again, and so on. “There is a lot of money to be made,” Dr. Schwarcz remarked, “and so the nonsense continues. Good nutrition is not complicated, but common sense doesn’t sell.” Towards the end of his presentation and in the lively Q&A that followed, Dr. Schwarcz gave a number of common sense suggestions for healthy living. “Populations that consume a greater variety of fruits and vegetables are healthier, but we don’t really know why,” the professor remarked. Obesity, he continued, is linked to cancer and sugar is linked to obesity. The body has no need for refined sugar. We ought to limit the amount of meat we consume that has been cooked at very high temperatures, and we shouldn’t eat cold cuts every day. Vitamin D has some merit, but for the most part science does not support the use of supplements. Exercise is not emphasized enough. Dr.

Schwarcz stated that “one cannot scientifically argue for a vegan or vegetarian diet as being superior to a meat-based diet.” Perhaps most controversially, he voiced his support for GMOs and stated that there is no scientific evidence that they are harmful, further arguing that GMO’s will necessarily play a critical role in feeding the world’s growing population. Dr. Schwarcz, who could have pursued a career in comedy or as a stage magician, was a thoroughly engaging speaker, and kept the audience laughing, both with planned jokes and spontaneous humour; he even concluded his opening remarks with several impressive magic tricks to illustrate one of his central messages: that “science can look like magic until you know how it works.” As the evening wrapped up, the moderator thanked the O’Brien Theatre for sponsoring the series and announced that the next event would be held on April 20 and would feature Professor Janice Fiamengo from the University of Ottawa. The title of her talk will be “Has Feminism Been Good for Men? A Former Feminist Speaks Out.” For info contact info@needtoknowspeaker.ca .

The early bird gets more than the worm MICHAEL RUNTZ Nature’’s Way
Although spring seems to take one step forward and then two steps back, many of the first birds to return from the south are now here. Eastern phoebes currently greet the dawn with their name-giving songs while killdeer vociferously complain as they fly over fields. Although it will be weeks until the majority of insect-eating birds return to our area, in addition to phoebes, tree swallows and eastern bluebirds are already back. Although those three species forage in different ways and belong
to different families (flycatchers, swallows, and thrushes, respectively), they share one feature, one that drives them to return early in spite of the risk of cold weather and lack of food. All three species place their nests in sites that are relatively scarce. Phoebes construct distinctive moss-covered mud nests on ledges with overhanging roofs. Before humans built bridges with support beams and houses with porches, cliffs provided them with suitable nest sites. But even though cliffs were not particularly rare habitats, the perfect combination of ledge and overhanging rock were hard to find. Thus, phoebes were driven to return early to stake out a claim to a

suitable site. First come, first served; those who arrived late might not find a vacant site, and thus might fail to mate and pass on their genes. Tree swallows and eastern bluebirds don’t nest on rock ledges but they do return early from their wintering grounds. Originally, both species nested in tree cavities, which typically would be abandoned woodpecker nests or holes created by rot where a branch broke off a tree trunk. While one might suspect that there are plenty of such sites in woodlands, both tree swallows and those colourful thrushes forage in open areas, so the cavities they utilized would necessarily be at the edge of a forest, not deep within it. And even if there were a lot of cavities, the demand for them might still exceed the supply, for many other birds including great crested flycatchers, northern saw-whet owls, eastern screech-owls, barred owls, wood ducks and hooded mergansers nest in them. Mammals use cavities too; porcupines, raccoons, and even fishers occupy larger cavities while grey squirrels and both northern and southern flying squirrels inhabit ones with smaller entrances. As if the competition was not already steep enough, two new cavity-using species arrived on the scene in the 1890s. European starlings and house sparrows, European species deliberately released by homesick Brits, were nonmigratory and as they spread through North America they took over many of the cavities used by bluebirds and swallows. Bluebirds historically went through a serious decline that was blamed in part on the usurping of their nest sites by the foreign species. However, man-made nest boxes helped

compensate for the lack of natural cavities, and eastern bluebirds and tree swallows continue to utilize them today. European starlings and house sparrows also use nest boxes, but with house sparrow numbers in decline and a proliferation of those structures, there appears to now be enough to go around. While cavities might provide painful memories for our species, for a number of birds and other animals they play essential roles in their lives. The Nature email is mruntz@start.ca
GRAND ROUNDS Golfers: Mark your calendars for June 9
While there may still be some snow on the ground in the Renfrew area, organizers of the 19th annual RVH Foundation Charity Golf Classic are dreaming of bright blue skies and perfectly manicured greens. Whatever the weather on Friday, June 9, they suggest golf enthusiasts to save the date for a day of great fun, food and friends—along with some terrific prizes. As one of the original organizing members, RVHF Executive Director Barb Desilets notes, “It’s wonderful to see how this event has evolved and continues to be one of our key fundraisers today. Participants know they are in for a great day supporting a very good cause.” Once again, the tournament will be held at the Renfrew Golf Club, one of our major sponsors, and all proceeds are directed to improving equipment and services at RVH. Last year more than $63,000 was raised from this tournament for the RVH Emergency Department.
Part of the fundraising activities throughout the day includes draws and auctions. Local business owners and individuals are always quick to support this event as sponsors or with prize donations. There are usually flat screen televisions, artwork, trips and event tickets up for grabs. Ken Dillabough from Protyre is the long-time event auctioneer and loyal supporter. He always sources a unique item for the live auction portion of the night, and promises this year will be no different. “Get your clubs and your winning bids ready. It’s going to be another amazing day supporting our community hospital,” says tournament chair, Patrick Cayen. Lunch and dinner is provided and there is still space available for teams. To be part of the action as a sponsor or participant, contact Hannah at the Foundation office at 613-432-4851 ext. 312 or by email at macmillanh@renfrewhosp.com.

RCI student returns from forum TIFFANY LEPACK
Local high school student Kordell Walsh was one of only 315 students from across Canada to recently attend the Forum for Young Canadians in Ottawa. The program is described as an opportunity for young Canadian leaders to enhance their knowledge of government processes; strengthen their leadership skills; and learn more about the diversity of thoughts, cultures, and people which make Canada a great country. The Grade 12 Renfrew Collegiate Institute student wants to become a lawyer, and he has already been accepted into two schools: Carleton University and the University of New Brunswick. He is also very involved in the community with the Ontario legislature Model Parliament; the Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke Federal Liberal Association, as the Renfrew co-ordinator; and local advisory committees. Walsh really embraced the forum experience, which was held from March 5 to March 12. “It was awesome. It really tied in well with my model parliament experience and my work with the Ministry of Education Student Advisory Committee,” said Walsh. “There was a lot to do and it was all filled with interesting stuff. As someone interested in politics, to sit in the Senate and the House of Commons was exciting.” While there, he had the privilege to sit in with Senator Peter Harder and member of Parliament David Christopherson. During the forum, he heard from a number of different guest speakers from the media, government lobbyists, Elections Canada and more. “I found the media one and how the media affects our interpretation of politics very interesting,” said Walsh. “They covered the United States election of course was largely influenced by media, and of course that it was important to follow procedure and look to credible sources.” The experience has helped him see things differently. “Now, I look at the news and think of the work behind each story.” He also enjoyed the discussion on international trade, and the background and process of trade between different countries. The entire experience for him was very interesting, as he was able to learn about issues affecting students from all across the country. “Getting to understand the problems of each

GROWING FORWARD
April 2017 • In partnership with the Renfrew Mercury
Donor Dollars Matter
Running a hospital is a very complex numbers game— just ask Vice President of Financial Services, Tim Sonnenburg. He says in RVH’s case, the winning combination always involves the generosity of our community. “Donor dollars really do make all of the difference in providing the very best level of care to our patients,” Sonnenburg notes. He explains that the Ministry of Health and LongTerm Care contributes the largest source of funding to cover the bulk of daily operating expenses.
However, Sonnenburg points out that the formula does not account for everything RVH needs to effectively serve the people who walk through the doors. There’s always medical equipment that needs updating and renovation projects underway to improve the facility and make it more user friendly. In addition to the essentials, it is recognized that extra special touches go a long way in improving a patient’s overall mood and health. Consequently, providing comfortable furnishings for patients and their family members or building a beautiful Healing Garden are also priority items on the list. “In terms of a pie, the RVH Foundation steps in to provide us with that missing piece so we can give our patients the highest level of care possible,” Sonnenburg adds.
He points at the Diagnostic Imaging Department as a prime example of where donor dollars make a major impact. “It is the generosity of our donors that allows RVH to make investments that will serve our community for many years to come,” concludes Sonnenburg.
DID YOU KNOW? Thanks to the support of our community, the Foundation was able to step up and assist with the upgrade of the CT scanner equipment to a new GE 128slice Revolution—EVO. Benefits include greater resolution (better images) while utilizing lower doses of ionizing radiation.
“Donor dollars help us to provide our region with access to state-of-the-art equipment and services that we could not otherwise provide in our community.” —Lisa Wherry, Manager, Medical Imaging
Your dollars make a difference When you give to the RVH Foundation, you are supporting the health of our community hospital and all those who depend on high-quality care close to home. Your generosity will be rewarded in so many ways, including an official tax receipt that can help to reduce your tax burden.
Make RVH your charity of choice. Please call the RVH Foundation office at 613-432-4851 ext. 263, or visit us online at www.renfrewhosp.com to learn more about how you can contribute to the RVH difference.

Two Renfrew area hockey players picked in OHL draft TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com
The big ‘O’ is calling for two local budding hockey stars. The Ontario Hockey League held its priority selection draft on Saturday, April 8, and St. Joseph’s High School’s Simon Rose and Jack Quinn were both selected. The North Bay Battalion drafted Rose in the second round with the 35th overall pick. Renfrew’s Rose, who just turned 16 on March 23, had 10 goals and 11 assists for 21 points in 39 games in the Under 18 AAA league. He was also called up to play in five games for the Pembroke Lumber Kings of the Central Canada Hockey League (CCHL). The Battalion have been watching Rose develop. “Our regional scout there really liked him. I’ve also seen him several times. We think he has really good feet, he’s got good puck awareness, he moves the puck well,” said Errol Hook, Battalion director of scouting in an email statement on Rose. “I like the fact that when he gets the puck, his head is always up and he doesn’t just get it and say ‘OK, plan A is up and off the glass.’ He thinks the game well. Stan (Butler, head coach) wanted a puck moving guy, a guy for the power play, and we think he’s going to bring that a little bit next year and certainly the year after.” In a press release on the Battalion’s website Rose said it feels great to be drafted to an amazing organization like North Bay. “I bring a fast, puck-moving, reliable defensive game to the team. The next step for me is to train hard this summer to get bigger and stronger for the next level,” said Rose in the release. “I think it will be hard work and dedication this summer and a lot of battling to try and get a spot on the team next year.” Cobden’s Quinn, who played this year with the Kanata Lasers, was taken by the Ottawa 67’s in the second round with the 39th overall pick. The 67’s also stayed local with their first round pick selecting Ottawa native Graeme Clarke. “It was a good day for the Ottawa 67’s,” said 67’s head coach and general manager Jeff Brown, in a press release from the club. “Two great Ottawa kids in the first two rounds.” Quinn, who plays forward; finished third overall in league scoring at 52 points (28 goals, 24 assists) in 45 games. He also notched a league-leading nine game-winning goals. “Quinn is just scratching the surface on how good he is going to be,” said Brown in the release. “He has an elite hockey brain. We came into the draft with a need on the right side and we feel we addressed that in the first two rounds.” The draft action continues this week as the CCHL draft was held on April 10.
Jack Quinn, top photo, shakes hands with Ottawa 67’s general manager Jeff Brown after being drafted in the second round of the OHL draft on April 8. Simon Rose, left, at the 2017 OHL Combine in Oshawa, on April 2 was also drafted in the second round by North Bay. Photos courtesy of Ottawa 67’s Hockey Club and Aaron Bell/ OHL Images

The junior varsity boys team at St. Joseph’s claim the trophy this spring, beating Grade 9-10 teams from Arnprior to Pembroke. The Jaguars are comprised of players from southern Renfrew county. They handily won their first two games at the March 31 tournament held at Ma-Te-Way Centre. A loss came next, then a win to finish with most points. Just like the seniors, their only loss was to Opeongo High School.

The Renfrew Collegiate Institute (RCI) Nordic Ski team competed at the Eastern Ontario Secondary School Athletic Association championships on Feb. 15, on the Forest Lea Cross Country Ski Trails located 15 kilometres outside of Pembroke. Race conditions were good with a couple of centimetres of new powder on top of groomed and machined trails. Temperatures at race time were around -4 degrees creating decent conditions for glide. Racers were sent off in time-trial format at 30-second intervals. The junior boys category included skiers in Grades 9 and 10 and RCI skiers included Leif Buxton, Wes Matthews, Tommy MacAskill and Thom Stark. Due to an injury earlier in the season, Kyle Hall, who had been training with the team, was unable to ski. The junior boys race was won by Guillaume Pelchat of Équinoxe with his brother Thomas placing second and Will Steer of Mackenzie winning the bronze medal.

Our wonderful parents, George Edwin Freeman, and D. June Freeman (nee Maxwell) of Arnprior, Ontario, died within 36 hours of each other after almost 62 years of marriage, on April 2 and April 3 respectively, at ages 95 and 86. George, son of the late E.G.D. and the late Ada (nee Davis) Freeman was born in 1921 in Winnipeg. He was the brother of the late Jean Harvey (late Ian), John Freeman (late Marg and the late Barbara), the late Marjorie Cummings (late Webb), and Lois Wilson (late Roy). As navigator of a B25 Mitchell bomber based in Dunsfold, England, he and his crew carried out 51 missions during World War II. Subsequently, he lived in postwar London and Florence, Italy, with his first wife, Pat Larkin. On returning to Canada, he completed his master’s degree in economics at University of Toronto, and began his 35-year career at the Bank of Canada, where he met and married June. He rose through the ranks at the Bank to serve as chief of the Research Department and later as a deputy governor. He was also a commissioner on the Royal Commission on Prices and Incomes, and a professor emeritus in the Department of Economics at Queen’s University in Kingston. In 1980, he and June bought a farm near Arnprior, Ontario, and became sheep farmers. June, daughter of the late Wallace A. and the late Dorothy (nee Betts) Maxwell, was born in Ottawa in 1930. She was sister of the late Wallace Jr. ( Brenda) and Penny Schafer (Fred), and sister-in-law of John Dobrowolski (Brenda). One of only five women graduates in the B. Com. program at McGill University in her year, she subsequently joined the Bank of Canada, where she met George. Married in 1955, George and June became parents of Victoria (Mark Fawcett), Martha (died 2002), Kate, and Eric (former partner Lisa Lamoureux), and eventually grandparents of Claire, Ariel, Michael, and Fiona as well as numerous grand-dogs. June was also president of the Natural Childbirth Association of Ottawa and was involved in the King’s Daughters Dinner Wagon, later Meals on Wheels (Ottawa), as well as the University Women’s Club (Arnprior); she served as treasurer for a number of other community organizations. She became an expert midwife, assisting at the births of many lambs at Yellowgrass Farm. We wish to thank the many friends, neighbours, organizations, and businesses that helped make it possible for our parents to continue living in the community of Arnprior as they aged. These included CCAC, in particular Shalan Doxsee, Alida Tourian, and Linda Jamieson; the caring PSWs of St. Elizabeth Health Care, most recently Donna Langford and Anita McNulty; the staff of Island View Suites; and Veterans Affairs Canada. In addition, we thank the fabulous folks at Arnprior-Braeside-McNab Seniors at Home, especially Nancy, Colin, Liz, and Lesley; our parents’ long-time family physicians, John Kiskis and Donna Vilis; and the skilled teams at Arnprior and District Memorial Hospital and Hospice Renfrew. A visitation will be held Saturday, April 29 from 1 to 3pm at Island View Suites, 30 Jack Crescent, Arnprior, and our parents’ lives will be honoured and celebrated on their 62nd wedding anniversary, Sunday, April 30, at Kirkman House, 294 John St. N., Arnprior, from 2 to 4pm; all are welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the ALS Society, Alzheimer’s Society, Hospice Renfrew, Arnprior-Braeside-McNab Seniors at Home, or Arnprior and District Memorial Hospital. In the care of the Pilon Family Funeral Home and Chapel Ltd., 50 John Street North, Arnprior. Condolences/Donations www.pilonfamily.ca

Only God knows how many times, I’ve broken down and cried, When I look back upon our lives, One of the things that makes me glad, Is that you chose me to share with you, The precious years we had. We often lay awake at night, When the world is fast asleep, And take a walk down memory lane, With tears upon our cheeks. Remembering you is easy, We do it every day, But missing you is a heartache, That never goes away. We hold you tightly within our hearts, And there you will remain, Life has gone on without you But it will never be the same.” We will love you forever Mom and Dad

In Loving Memory of
August 6, 1935 – April 8, 2007 In loving memory of our beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather on the 10th anniversary of the day you went away. God looked around his garden and he found an empty place, He then looked down upon this earth, and saw your tired face. He put his arms around you and lifted you to rest, God’s garden must be beautiful, he always takes the best. He knew that you were suffering, He knew you were in pain, He knew that you would never get well on earth again. He saw that the road was getting rough and the hills are hard to climb, So he closed your weary eyelids and whispered “Please be thine” It broke our hearts to lose you, But you didn’t go alone, For part of us went with you, The day that God called you home. On May 6 is the Community Awareness Day at Low Square, which will run from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will feature a bake sale, care wash, barbecue, inflatables and more. “Hopefully people will come and gain more information on Relay or just get their car washed,” said Bossy. Friday, May 12 is the 16th Bonnie Kerr Memorial Cure for Cancer Carnival at Ma-Te-Way Park from 4 to 8 p.m. The carnival will feature six inflatable games, food canteen and more. The proceeds from the event will be divided between the I Choose RVH Campaign and the relay. “All the details are still being planned but it is definitely something people should come and check out,” said Bossy. New this year will be the Ford Test Drive and $20 from every test drive up to $6,000 will be donated to the causes. The main event, the Relay for Life, will take place on Friday, May 26 at Ma-Te-Way with the opening ceremony at 6 p.m. followed by the survivor victory lap and the luminary ceremony is at 10 p.m. “Everyone has been affected by cancer,” said Bossy. “It’s a celebration of the survivors journey and fighting back against cancer.”

It’s time for Raiders and the entire community to unite for the 11th annual Renfrew Collegiate Institute Relay for Life. The event takes close to 50 volunteers and includes 10 different chairpersons, including event chair John Bossy. The high school has been running the event since 2006 and is the top fundraising school in Canada raising $830,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society. This year its goal is to raise $60,000. “We are always trying to push for more and hopefully we hit the $1 million mark soon,” said Bossy. Last year they raised $58,000. “For such a small community we get such a large turnout,” said Bossy. “It’s always nice when you see the community there for us.” The first big event is the pancake breakfast and school kick off assembly on April 21. The breakfast runs from 7 to 8:30 a.m. and is open to the public. “It’s all about getting people in and making them aware of relay. We will have our booth set up and you can register and get more information,” said Bossy. “Plus, it’s a great chance to have a warm and delicious pancake breakfast.” This year the theme of the breakfast will be Canada 150. “We are trying to get authentic maple syrup HELP WANTED

Playing cards was a staple of Mary’s household Nobody liked a game of cards better than I did. Of course, we young ones were never allowed to play euchre at the Saturday night house parties. That was for adults. But if we could find an extra deck of cards, we could sit on a bed upstairs and play Old Maid, or Snap, two favourite games of mine, while the adults pounded the table down in the kitchen. Although we kids learned euchre at an early age, it was still considered an adult game come Saturday night. The neighbour away on the Barr Line never missed a Saturday night house party. She walked as stiff as a board, and her lips were thin and clamped together so that you could hardly see that she had a mouth. She had a fierce look about her and even at a game of euchre she hardly FOR SALE

ever smiled. She always wore black, and on the hottest night of the summer, she had a crocheted shawl draped around her shoulders. Although father would never be rude to her, he had little patience with her constant talk about the sins of the world, and all of us were going straight to hell in a basket. I often wondered where she would end up, but was too frightened to ask. Even though this woman never FOR SALE

missed a card game on a Saturday night, she said she wouldn’t touch a deck of cards on a Sunday if her life depended on it. Playing cards on Sunday was right up there with swearing or stealing chickens. Whatever church she belonged to forbade it. Well, it didn’t matter to us if was Sunday or Monday. If we had a few minutes to spare, or we ran out of things to do after supper, we got out the deck of cards, and sitting around the old pine table we played our favourite card games. I wasn’t too quick on the uptake, and always ended up losing at Snap, until I finally realized my brother Emerson, slapped his hand over the upcard before anyone had a chance to look at it. Mother soon put a stop to that and FOR SALE

moved him away from the table. It was the same thing with Old Maid. I couldn’t figure out how Emerson knew exactly where the Queen of Spades was, until my sister Audrey discovered him sitting on it, ready to play it at just the right time. My brother Earl loved to build card houses when the table was cleared. I was amazed at how high he could build without the whole thing falling in a heap. It wasn’t above Emerson to give the table a shake to bring the card house down either. But the Saturday night house party was when cards seemed to rule the evening, with the neighbour from the Barr Line the first to arrive and the last to leave. Of course, the last card had to be played before the stroke of midnight, or she would quit for the night. FOR SALE

My curiosity got the better of me one Saturday night when the house party was at our farm, and I asked father why the woman from the Barr Line was so against cards on Sunday. He said he wouldn’t doubt it for a minute that, when she was alone on a Sunday,, she wouldn’t reach for a deck of cards to break the monotony of living alone, never letting on to anyone. And he gave a hearty chuckle, and said, “It’s like someone who is death against alcohol, sure that the Devil is behind every drop, but takes a sip now and again just for medicinal purposes,” and he put back his head and roared. THIS WEEK’S PUZZLE ANSWERS IN NEXT WEEKS ISSUE.
sudoku
Bearsaeinrs
horoscopes
HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
ARIES – Mar 21/Apr 20 Aries, maintain your composure in light of a sticky situation that you are called upon to handle in the next few days. Others will notice your calm demeanor.
LEO – Jul 23/Aug 23 The truth will ultimately set you free, Leo. Seek the truth when handling a difficult problem and this will eventually make the solution easier to find.
SAGITTARIUS – Nov 23/Dec 21 Sagittarius, a trusted friend is willing to hear your side of the story and offer a new perspective and some advice. You need to win this person’s trust back.
TAURUS – Apr 21/May 21 Taurus, emotions can be a little distracting this week as sparks fly in a new relationship. Avoid going overboard but enjoy this exciting time in your life.
VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22 You might want to hold off on an ambitious project for another month, Virgo. This will give you more time to develop a plan to complete the project.
GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, you are content to take it easy and to follow a familiar routine for now rather than branching out into new things. Take a flier on new friendships and you will be glad you did.
LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23 Libra, you may need assistance, but no one is stepping up as a candidate at this juncture. Wait a bit longer and someone is sure to step up to the challenge.
CAPRICORN – Dec 22/Jan 20 Your presence is a gift to someone who needs you even if you get tongue-tied and don’t know what to say, Capricorn. Let your company serve as support. Things will fall in place.
CANCER – Jun 22/Jul 22 Try not to take things too personally when you start receiving feedback, Cancer. Everyone has an opinion, and most people share theirs with good intentions.

Check Local By-laws before Open Air Burning
The McNab/Braeside Fire Department is advising residents to contact them regarding any restrictions governing open air burning, before starting any fires or burning brush. “With spring outdoor cleanup starting, we know some folks choose to burn brush and yard debris on their property, explained Fire Chief Hartwick. Cleaning up debris and limiting the level of flammable vegetation surrounding your home is a good practice, but make sure the way you do it is safe – for you, your home, your neighbors, and the surrounding area. A permit is required with specific conditions for burning as per open air burning by-law 2015-99. Open air burning can include the use of outdoor fireplaces and cooking fires not involving the use of a barbeque. Some outdoor appliances used are not recommended because there is potential for personal injury, property damage and increased risk of a grass fire. “Whether in the backyard of your home, the cottage or at a campground, make fire safety a priority, said Fire Chief Hartwick, “Open air burning, especially if left unattended, can become difficult to control and can result in a serious widespread fire. Always keep fire safety in mind, contact McNab/Braeside Fire Department for more information or any questions you have about our open air burning requirements 613-623-5756 ext. 233.
