The whole town needs to play into it and to identify Renfrew as the birthplace and all of these stores would fill up,” said Miller. “We are thrilled and overcome with the excitement, it’s so nice to see us moving beyond our borders.” Renfrew was in the media spotlight on Tuesday morning as CTV Morning Live from Ottawa broadcast live from the museum and Miller was also interviewed by TSN 1200. The cups started their day off at the museum for a VIP viewing with many people mingling around and standing in awe of the hockey history on display. “It’s great, it is so encouraging to see Renfrew being identified as the beginning of the NHA, which morphed into the NHL,” said Miller during the VIP session. “The issue is it started in Renfrew.” One of those people who stood silently always near the cup was Mike Bolt. BIG DAY

ON THE ROAD

Renfrew Mayor Don Eady called it a great day for the town. “It brings a real nice recognition to the town,” said Eady. “M.J. O’Brien started the NHA, we are the birthplace of the NHL one way or the other,” Eady was also pleased to have both trophies on display together, a historic first. “For most people it will be the first time they see it live,” said Eady. “Just to be able to say you stood with the cup in Renfrew is part of our history.” Bob Barker, chair of the museum, thought it was the greatest thing to have both trophies together. “The first time in history they are photographed together,” said Barker. “The Stanley Cup is the biggest focus; it is the holy grail. The O’Brien Cup explains the history of how it eventually turned into the NHL. Renfrew should be very proud of our history and we are very fortunate to have that history.” Long time museum committee member M.J. Blimkie was very impressed to have the O’Brien Cup also in town. “It’s the first time they have ever been seen together, it’s just something else,” said Blimkie. Barker thinks Renfrew should be very proud of its connection to the NHL. “We are hoping the town supports it because it is a great tourist attraction,” said Barker. All of the committee members and some members of council were also wearing Renfrew Millionaire jerseys. “It’s kind of exciting, it means

The next stop for the two cups was a parade through downtown. The parade included a police car, fire truck, a truck with a trailer with the cup and one more unique vehicle. Randy Pender has worked for the Town of Renfrew for 38 years and drove the Zamboni in the parade. “It’s pretty cool and awesome,” he said of the cup arriving in town. He admitted he was a little nervous driving in the parade but said he was used to big crowds at the rink. “I never thought I would be in a parade in Renfrew with the Stanley Cup,” said Pender. Chad Scerba and his eight-yearold son, were standing outside the post office before the parade started. “It’s great to see the support for the museum and it is nice the town is being recognized as the birthplace,” said Chad. “I know the committee put in a lot of hard work on this.” Also amongst the crowd gathered outside waiting for the cup to be paraded by was Dawson Fraser, a huge hockey fan. “I’m really excited to see the Stanley Cup,” said Fraser. His teachers who were with him said he almost ran all the way from Renfrew Collegiate High School. The parade ended at the Wing and people were already streaming in. Alison Legault arrived just before the cup was brought into the Wing with her three-year-old son Cash. “I’m hoping it’s not the last time he gets to hold it or see it,” said Ali-

son. She noted a lot of people can’t make it to the Hockey Hall of Fame to see the trophy. “It’s pretty exciting, probably not a lot of people will get to see it in their lifetime,” said Legault. The Wing was busy all afternoon and well into the evening as young and old, friends and classmates waited in line to get their picture taken with the two cups. Rob Barker, one of the committee members, was amazed by the crowd at the Wing. “It’s exciting to see all of the kids,” said Barker. “It’s a big deal for them, they see it all of the time on TV but now it’s here in town.” Barker also thought it was important for the kids to learn more about the town’s history. “It’s a nice thing for the kids to be involved with, the rich hockey history of Renfrew,” said Barker. Just passed 8 p.m. the last few people in line got their picture with the cup. Approximately 5,000 people made their way by. A few days later Miller reflected on the day. “People came from Thunder Bay, east of Ottawa, Belleville and more,” said Miller. “I think it proves my point, if the town would be properly recognized as the birthplace of the NHA/NHL this place would be booming. There is no end to what you could attract in the tourism industry.” Miller says they are getting tons of compliments on the day and that the downtown was overwhelmed with out of town shoppers. In a year when no Canadian hockey team made the playoffs many in Renfrew can now say they saw the cup in their hometown. “Unless they travelled somewhere else,” said Miller. “They wouldn’t have seen the cup.”

Horton Township council approves new burning bylaw Tiffany Lepack

tlepack@metroland.com

There are changes in how Horton Townships residents can light up outside. The township updated its open air burning bylaw at its regular council meeting on April 5. Horton Fire Chief Randy Corbin explained the new bylaw was due because the community is expanding. “The last time it was done was in 2007 and the community had been building up. There were more and more houses getting closer together, and we have been getting lots of reports of smoke bothering other people,” said Corbin. “We’ve had a couple of issues where fires have gotten out of control.” Corbin said the old bylaw needed to be tightened. “(It’s) so people can enjoy their fires and still be able to control the burning and reduce the risk of fire and property damage to other people,” said Corbin. Some of the major changes to the bylaw include the following: * A fire season will run from April 1 to Oct. 31, no bonfires will be permitted during this time anywhere in the township

* Bonfires are not permitted in the residential one, limited service residential and mobile home park zones at any time during the year. Bonfires (open air fires) are permitted with a fire permit in the other zones between Nov. 1 and March 31 * Campfires are permitted in any zone during the fire season without a permit providing the fire pit meets the definition in the bylaw * no burn barrels are permitted in the above residential zones. They are only permitted in rural zones between Nov. 1 and March 31 if the burn barrel is placed a minimum of 100 metres from any lot line * Strengthened wording for cost recovery and * List of fines under the Provincial Of-

fenses Act that would be issues by a ticket. As to the new penalty section Corbins says it will help them enforce fees when people are careless. Corbin says he expects some people will not be happy with the changes. “There will be backlash on a few of them,” said Corbin. “The majority of the people are for it; you always get people who disagree.” Corbin noted there has been a number of changes in the township since the last bylaw review. “A lot of the hamlets and such there are people who insist on burning garbage, this will alleviate that problem. “We have curbside pickup now for the garbage and recycling,” said Corbin. “So there is no need to be burning garbage, so

this will put an end to that.” He noted people can still have burn barrels/bonfires. “If you have the property you can still have a burn barrel but you have to have the property,” said Corbin. The bylaw was reviewed by a sub-committed that was formed in July 2015 and met five times plus an open house public meeting. During the meeting and afterwards the committee received 25 responses. Also during the fire committee section of the meeting Corbin reported to council the fire department responded to three incidents in March: two locked door rescues and one chimney fire. The tanker and pumper trucks were also safety checked on April 5.

Theme park ‘pie in the sky’ says Horton Township deputy mayor Tiffany Lepack

tlepack@metroland.com

A proposed music event at the Horton Community Centre was quickly shut down on April 5. Rob Sweet, who presented to council two weeks ago his idea for a theme park at the old Timber Town property, addressed the recreation committee. Sweet was seeking approval to hold a musical fundraiser at the community centre called Greenstock from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. on July 30. He was going to put neighbours up in a hotel and plan separate entertainment for them. Mayor Robert Kingsbury was

the first to say he was certainly not in favour of the event. “Our facility was not designed for 5,000 people, what about the septic system,” he asked. “I am not in favour of putting our residents out of their homes.” Coun. Dave Bennett agreed with the mayor, saying he did not think the facility was made for something like that. “I do not believe it is a good idea to put 5,000 people on Horton Township property,” said Bennett. “I support what you want to do but not to have the event there. The facility itself does not accommodate it.” Bennett noted he would love to

see an event with 3-400 people happen on the site but not something that large. “I hate to tell you but it would come back and bite us,” said Bennett. Sweet then posed a question to council. “Is this the place for me to build the park?” Bennett countered by telling him he was way too far ahead of himself and that he wanted to see a concrete plan. Deputy Mayor Robert Johnston, who runs a Bluegrass festival on his 60-acre property, also echoed the size problem. “It’s way too big of a function,”

said Johnston. As to the current status of the Timber Town property, Johnston noted it’s currently owned by six or seven different people. “To be honest it’s a pie in the sky,” said Johnston. “I would like to have it in the township but I don’t know how.” Bennett told Sweet he was willing to work with him to try and put something together. Sweet commented he thought he had more of a positive reaction after the last meeting. “If we had a chance to talk you would see a plan,” said Sweet before he left the meeting. Get ready to pedal in support of the Horton trails. The Horton recreation committee heard a presentation from Debbie Fiebig on the Cycle the K&P and CN Trails event on June 5. Council approved a motion to co-host the event as part of its recreation program with assistance from the Pinnacle Pedallers as a fundraiser for the Horton CN trail. This is the first time Fiebig has organized such an event and she is still finalizing all of the details. She admits it has been a learning experience. “I’m a passionate cyclist,” she told the

committee. “It’s a fundraiser for the trails so I’m encouraging all forms of active transportation.” The event is set to run on June 5 from 9 a.m. to noon starting at the Ma-Te-Way Park in Renfrew. Participants can then wheel, (cycle or stroll) on the CN Trail in Horton to Goshen Road, which is 10 kilometres. “A person can decide on their distance based on their ability,” said Fiebig. “I’ve set no limits because everyone is different.” All of the proceeds will be going to the Horton trail and she hopes the money will be used for trail markers, or signage or trail upkeep. “I’m hoping next year it will support the Renfrew part of the trail and the year after that the K&P,” said Fiebig.

Other plans for the event include a bike safety rodeo with Janice Sawbridge of the Renfrew OPP and a history display on the trails.

SAFETY TIPS

Candles: Never leave children or pets unattended in a room with a candle or oil lamp.

CHALLENGE

She also noted June 5 is the start of the Silver Chain Challenge versus Lanark a friendly competition between the two counties to inspire and promote more active and healthier communities. “An active community is a healthy community,” said Fiebig. Organizers are currently working on making up pledge forms and registration information. If you would like to get involved contact Fiebig at 613-432-6893 or Kathleen Rogers at the township 613-433-3303.

no motion on Sweet’s proposed July 30 event. Sweet called the Renfrew Mercury on April 7 and said he was not too impressed on how the meeting went. He said one of the property owners was not interested in selling to him and had contacted council. “It doesn’t seem like it’s a proper fit, “said Sweet. “I was looking at Horton as my base community.” Sweet says he is still going to discuss two other Horton properties with the mayor and councillors but admits the response from the committee ‘was not a good one.’ He does have other locations for his theme park but would not disclose where they are.

First responders, unions applaud new PTSD legislation Sherry Haaima

sherry.haaima@metroland.com

Post traumatic stress disorder or PTSD is a very real challenge for many of Ontario’s 73,000 first responders. New legislation passed unanimously last week should make accessing services easier for first responders, who are twice as likely than the general public to suffer from PTSD. On April 5, the province passed legislation that will create a presumption that PTSD diagnosed in first responders is work-related. County of Renfrew Paramedic Chief Michael Nolan applauded the move. “For first responders in general it shines a light on a really important subject that has been not only misunderstood but underappreciated in terms of its impact,” said Nolan. Trauma affects all first responders, he said. “Part of this is about PTSD but the greater opportunity here is also highlighting mental health and making sure we create a supportive culture,” said Nolan. “Under the Supporting Ontario’s First Responders Act (Bill 163), the presumption allows for faster access to WSIB (Workplace Safety and Insurance Board) benefits, resources and timely treatment,” says a Province of Ontario press release. “Once a first responder is diagnosed with PTSD by either a psychiatrist or a psychologist, the claims process to be eligible for WSIB benefits will be expedited, without the need to prove a causal link between PTSD and a workplace event.” The release goes on to indicate the presumption applies to police officers, firefighters, paramedics, certain workers in correctional institutions and secure youth justice facilities, dispatchers of police, firefighter and ambulance services, and emergency response teams. “The act also allows the Minister of Labour to request and publish PTSD prevention plans from employers of workers who are covered by the presumption.” This act is part of the province’s strategy to prevent or mitigate the risk of PTSD and provide first responders with faster access to treatment and the information they need to stay healthy. Renfrew County paramedic Chris Day is vice chair of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) ambulance committee of Ontario. Day was at Queen’s Park for the passing of the legislation. “We feel it is a great first step,” said Day, noting there are still some areas he’d like to see improved. “We’re extremely happy with Minister of Labour Kevin Flynn and Safety Minister Yasir Naqvi for their push and leadership to hurry up and get it through so we can start getting help for first responders.” Among the problems with the system, explained

Day, was that because of the way WSIB is structured, workers were expected when filing a claim to list a specific date, time and details of the incident. With first responders, responding to various traumatic events can have a cumulative effect. “Yes, it can be a traumatic one-time event but it can be something more chronic and over a long period of time,” said Day. The mood at Queen’s Park was upbeat on the day of the bill’s passing, said Day. Union officials were a little disappointed the bill is retroactive

going back only 24 months, said Day, and that individuals who had WSIB claims denied in the past will not be allowed to have their cases reopened. Day said they’d like to see more workers included in the legislation, as well, but that covering first responders is a good start. Passing of the legislation has been a long time coming, said Day, with the bill first coming forward some eight years ago after being proposed by NDP MPP Cheri DiNovo. See MORE, page 6

Chris Day

More work needed: Day From page 5

The province has also promised to be more proactive in terms of providing supports that might prevent the PTSD in the first place, said Day, including ensuring counsellors provided to first responders are properly trained. “We have employee assistance programs in place but the problem is those are good for if your children are having trouble with schoolwork, you’re having financial trouble or problems with your spouse,” said Day. “Those counsellors are not specifically trained on how to deal with PTSD or someone who’s just watched five people burn to death in their car.” Access to specialized, trained counsellors could help first responders before the effects of trauma become debilitating, he said. Paramedics and communication officers representing four labour groups with nearly 8,000 Ontario paramedic members among them, were at the Legislative gallery at Queen’s Park, to support and mark the event. Paramedics from Ottawa, Hamilton, Toronto, Renfrew, Durham, Peel and ORNGE, were on hand for the vote. “Increasingly concerned that the province was taking recommendations on paramedic issues from some who do not represent the majority views of working paramedics, last year, CUPE, the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU), UNIFOR and the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) formed the Paramedic Working Group (PWG). The intent of the group is to ensure that dialogue with the provincial government on priority paramedic policy and patient safety issues represents the perspective of the majority of paramedics and communications officers. “Bill 163 will go a long way they say in lessening the stigma associated with PTSD and paramedics getting help and treatment before it’s too late,” said a joint press release issued from the unions. 6 The Renfrew Mercury - Thursday, April 14, 2016

Books in fairly good shape says mayor of Admaston-Bromley after 2015 audit presentation Tiffany Lepack

tlepack@metroland.com

The books are in order in the Township of Admaston-Bromley. The township heard a presentation from Rory Richards of MacKillican and Associations to review the 2015 financial statements at its regular council meeting on April 7. “The books are in fairly good shape in the Township of Admaston-Bromley, said Mayor Michael Donohue. MacKillican’s report stated it was their opinion the financial statements for Admaston-Bromley were presented fairly and at yearend they were in accordance with the Canadian public sector accounting standards for local governments. Richards pointed out during his presentation the town increased its cash balance compared to last year by $118,000, there was no amount last year because they were in overdraft in 2014. Taxes receivable was $224,372 in 2015 compared to $241,041 in 2014, this decreased by $16,500. It’s currently 6.5 per cent of taxa-

tion billed. “It’s on the low side for municipalities. The average in Ontario is roughly 10 per cent, said Richards. The total accounts receivable for 2015 was $237,552. Overall the financial assets for the town were just over $500,000 and the net financial assets were just over $16 million. Under revenue the town brought in $1,644,129 and it had budgeted for $1,642,548 for taxation and user charges. In government transfers it received $646,757 from the Ontario government, $85,523 from the federal funding and $8,152, from other municipalities, in other it received $372,122 for a total revenue of $2,756,683. The expenses totaled $3,77,207 at the end of the year. “It looks like a large deficit but that’s mainly due to the amortization that is included in these numbers, said Richards. The accumulated surplus at the beginning of the year was $16,228,270 and at the end of the year it was $15,207,746. The town’s reserves increased by $171,000 in 2015. “The township has done a good

job of rebuilding the reserves. You can see there is a change in reserves of $171,000 during the year so the reserves doubled in value, said Richards. At the end of 2014 the reserves were at $170,583 and the total ending in 2015 was $342,120. The township also received a letter from its accountants with comments to ‘strengthen your internal controls.’ One of the points addressed in the letter was the time sheets of the clerk/treasurer and road superintendent are not approved by an independent person and should be approved by a member of council to ensure accuracy. Town clerk/treasurer Annette Louis explained to council that both positions are salary jobs and there is a factor of trust and responsibility. “If we were not putting in our hours that would be pretty obvious pretty quick, Louis told council. Another issue that was noted was the tender opening process, the township does not have a tender summary sheet. However, all of these items are in the minutes she said .

Proposed county smoking bylaw will see butts out around some buildings Tiffany Lepack

The butt stops at nine metres. If the County of Renfrew has its way there will be no smoking within nine metres at its administration buildings, paramedic bases and public works garages. On March 30 council directed staff to bring an amended policy back to the table to its April 28 meeting, when council would vote to approve the new measure. The amendment clarified there would be no smoking within nine metres from any entrance, walkway or stairway. Warden Peter Emon thinks this is a good interim step and says more restrictions may come later. “It’s starting with something, said Emon. “I imagine in the future there will be a committee or council that will move to a full on ban on other sites, it takes a while to educate people. Renfrew County’s Bonnechere Manor already has a strict no

smoking policy anywhere on its grounds. Paul Moreau, director of development and property for the county, doesn’t see any problem having two policies for different locations. “I don’t see any challenges coming. A municipality can pass a bylaw as it seems fit, they don’t have to be the same (for each building), said Moreau. He also noted the Smoke Free Ontario Act distinguishes between different buildings as well. “There is no smoking on hospital properties and with other government buildings the nine metre rule applies, said Moreau. Some of the properties that would be affected include: Renfrew County Place at 450 O’Brien Rd., Renfrew, 80 McGonigal St., Arnprior, the paramedic base in Arnprior located at 91 Meehan St., the public works garages in Calabogie at 758 Mill St. and at 1460 Lochwinnoch Rd. in Goshen.

OPINION

Connected to your community

Treat smokers the same It took awhile, but Renfrew County council has finally bowed to inevitability by agreeing to ban smoking in all of its buildings. Since it has already banned smoking in its two long-term care homes and is in the process of phasing in prohibition at its social housing units, it’s about time it admitted what is sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander. If it is expecting its tenants to butt out, surely it should do the same for its own employees and elected representatives. But wait a minute. While smoking has been banned not only in the long-term homes but also outside, the proposed nosmoking regulations aren’t as strict for the other county buildings. Which include, by the way, not just county headquarters in Pembroke but Renfrew County Place in Renfrew, the administration building and paramedic base in Arnprior, and public works garages around the county. The proposed butt-out bylaw, to be voted on by county council at its April 28 meeting, will allow, if not amended, smoking on county property as long as it’s not within nine metres of a building’s entrance, walkway or stairway. County officials argue that the compromise is a first step toward a complete ban, which would be more palatable in the future as fewer and fewer county councillors and employees smoke.

The county notes that it is well within its rights to have two different rules for its buildings. It notes the provincial government encourages stricter rules for hospital and other health care facilities, which includes long-term care homes. So the county is within its rights. But that doesn’t make its stand ethically right. That train of thinking tends to penalize those who are most vulnerable instead of smokers who should know better. Most residents of long-term care homes are seniors who blithely started smoking before the hazards of the habit were wellknown. To try to force them to quit smoking now under the guise of doing it to protect their health is a bit late in the game. Besides, making them depart the warmth and security of their homes to feed their habit is more often worse for their health than letting them puff away in well-ventilated designated smoking zone. If anything, it is the long-term care residents who should be allowed to smoke on the county (Bonnechere Manor and Miramichi Lodge) properties and not the mostly younger workers who habituate the other county buildings. County council should rethink its bylaw and either ban smoking completely on all its properties or give the folks at the longterm care who smoke a break and let them have the nine-metre rule too.

Volunteers prove that Canada is a caring country To the editor:

Happy National Volunteer Week, Canada! Everybody knows this week is all about giving, but have you ever stopped to ask yourself why giving matters? You may answer: Because giving your time, talent or treasure to a good cause helps people in need. Or, because giving helps us to connect with people in our communities. Or, because it’s simply the right thing to do. And all of those reasons are true, of course! But there’s an even deeper reason why giving matters, and it has to do with the kind of country we want to live in. Every time you give, you make a statement that says: this is the Canada we want. A Canada that cares. A Canada that’s compassionate. A Canada where we help each other and all those in need.

Giving speaks volumes about the way we imagine our communities and our country. It may not always feel like you’re making a statement when you give, but you are - and guess what? It’s an important statement. It’s a statement we should feel proud to make from coast to coast to coast. I’ve always believed in the importance of giving in our lives and society. That’s why volunteerism and philanthropy are two of my top priorities as governor general. That’s why we launched My Giving Moment a few years ago, a social marketing campaign to encourage giving among all Canadians, especially younger generations. And that’s why I’ll be delighted to hand out a new medal for the first time this week to recognize our most caring, compassionate citizens. It’s called the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers, and as an

official Canadian honour, it builds on the legacy and spirit of the Caring Canadian Award in recognizing exceptional volunteers. This medal is driven by nominations from everyday Canadians who know their communities best. I’m sure that you know someone who deserves a medal from their country for their dedication to others. Well, now you have a chance to give them that medal! So, who inspires you? Well, nominate them! During this National Volunteer Week, share your story, thank a volunteer, join the conversation and nominate someone for Canada’s new Medal for Volunteers. This week is dedicated to celebrating volunteerism, and I offer all volunteers in Canada my sincere kudos for showing such generosity and caring.

A first contract for the newly unionized employees of Community Living Renfrew County South in Renfrew and Arnprior isn’t coming easily, or quickly. After voting to join the Ontario Public Service Employees Union more than a year and a half ago, the close to 100 workers have voted 89 per cent in favour of strike action if current negotiations to land a first contract fail to produce a tentative deal. “Our members have spoken loud and clearly: they’re looking for results at the bargaining table, and if that fails, they’re ready to take job action,” said Derek Ouellette, chair of the bargaining team for Local 472, which represents 96 workers at the agency. The strike vote attracted a turnout of 84 per cent of members. “That so many members chose to participate

In the latest talks in late January, the union reported progress in entrenching workers rights in a new contract, but reported a deal still needs to be reached on a wage level and grid.

Members of Local 472 provide developmental services for people with intellectual disabilities from offices in Renfrew and Arnprior. They joined the union’s developmental services sector that has more than 10,000 members. Staying safe online Children become like zombies with their cell phones, demonstrates presenter Paul Davis of Social Networking Safety during a presentation at Our Lady of Fatima School on April 4 about online safety. The Renfrew OPP and Renfrew Police Services Board put on the presentation and police spokesperson Const. Janice Sawbridge was pleased with the turnout. Sawbridge says parents need to spend time teaching their young children how to be safe when using the Internet, just like they teach them to cross the street safely or ride a bicycle. If parents don’t know something they should research it, or take a class. Sawbridge says the number one rule to keep kids safe online is: no electronics in the bedroom.

The Renfrew detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) investigated 172 calls for service during the previous week. An update to the search for a male wanted on an arrest warrant for failing to remain at the scene of a collision, he has been found and arrested. A 21-year-old man of Pontiac QC. was arrested in Quebec and transported to bail court in Ontario on April 6. He is charged with failing to remain at a collision causing bodily harm and take motor vehicle without consent after a collision on Raglan Street South in Renfrew on Thursday, March 31 where a pedestrian was struck at a crosswalk. He was released on a recognizance and will appear in court in Renfrew on April 20. The elderly female victim was treated in hospital for serious injuries. Const. Mark Yarmel is the lead investigator. If you have information related to this case and have not spoken to police please call 1-888-310-1122. DOMESTIC DISPUTES

New Hike for Hospice venue Sherry Haaima

sherry.haaima@metroland.com

The date for Hospice Renfrew’s major fundraiser, Hike for Hospice, has been set for May 1. “Gather together as a team, round up your family, friends and pets, get some fresh air and exercise, have loads of fun and be eligible for one of our great prizes,” says promotion for the event. It’s the 10th year for Hike for Hospice and among the changes this year is a new location – Ma-Te-Way Park. The theme for this year’s event is ‘It takes a team!’ The hike consists of a three-kilometre walk or a fivekilometre run and there are team challenges and prizes. This year’s event includes a corporate/business challenge, first responder team challenge, media group challenge and high school challenge, in which students can receive five of their community service hours. Executive director Maureen Sullivan-Bentz said organizers are really trying to expand the hike to people who might not have experienced hospice. “It’s important for us to expand and make all of Renfrew County aware of the services and programs we have to offer, including respite care and pain and symptom management,” she said. “It’s really important for us to get that message out there.” Hospice needs more ambassadors, she said, and officials are trying to engage youth and others and let them know about volunteer and fundraising opportunities. That’s where this year’s new team challenges come in, complete with prizes for top teams. There’s a high school team challenge. “We’d like to see all high schools in Renfrew County get involved,” said Sullivan-Bentz. Students can receive five community service honours for their participation. “The more we break down barriers and get people through the front door, the better,” she said. Officials are excited about the new location for the hike, which up until this year had started and finished at Stewart Park near the Presbyterian Church. The limited parking at that location was an issue, said SullivanBentz. The event route always included the picturesque trails at Ma-Te-Way Park so it makes sense to have the event start and finish there. There’s a focus on having a little something for everyone. “We’re really promoting that it’s a family event,” said Sullivan-Bentz. “There’ll be more things for kids this year.” SUPPORT NEEDED

Hospice Renfrew first opened its doors in 2008. The Ministry of Health and Long Term Care provides funding for close to 50 per cent of Hospice Renfrew operations. “As a result, we depend greatly on community support to provide the necessary additional funds in order that we may provide services to our residents and their families.” The continued community support is encouraging, said Sullivan-Bentz, and much-needed. “Donors have been so generous but having to fundraise $600, 00 a year is extremely challenging,” she said. Now that the building has reached the eight-year mark, there are needed improvements. Registration for Hike for Hospice starts at 1 p.m. and the walk begins at 2 p.m. Register at www.HikeForHospiceRenfrew.ca . Healing in the Valley The ninth-annual Spring Wellness and Craft Show at the Renfrew Recreation Centre showcased more than 30 vendors with various wares on Saturday, April 9. The event drew quite a bit of foot traffic, said coorganizer Lori McGrath. It was the first year the event was organized without the founder, Koula Cove, who is currently living in Labrador, Nfld. Wellness and Craft Show co-organizers McGrath, left, of Search Trace Locate, and Lynda Fraser, ‘Mamma Bear’ with Katie Bears. are pictured above. The event raised funds and food for the local food bank.

Foodgrains project celebrates 20 years It’s a special anniversary for a group that’s spent two decades helping the world’s hungry. The Admaston and Area Foodgrains project will plant its 20th crop this year. The project is a partnership between local churches and agribusinesses that raise crops that, when harvested, provide funds for the Canadian Foodgrains Bank to prevent hunger in countries around the world. The celebrations begin at the Hebron Christian Reformed Church in Renfrew on April 24 from 2 to 3 p.m. when everyone is invited to Spring into Song to celebrate Earth Day and the successes of the Foodgrains Bank. A program of music, film clips , conversation and light refreshments will bring our attention to the stewardship of our earth and the ways that the Canadian Foodgrains Bank helps people around the world. A freewill offering will be forwarded to the foodgrains bank to help continue its work. Contributions of $10 or more in an envelope with name and address will receive a tax receipt. For more information call 613-432-6317.

Youth chorus gears up for spring events The Renfrew Children and Youth Chorus recently performed in the Pembroke Music Festival, earning a first place with a mark of 90 per cent. They will be singing two songs during the Renfrew Music Festival, as well. Come to hear them sing on Wednesday, April 20 at 7 p.m. at Kirk Hall in the Presbyterian Church in Renfrew. They will also be holding their annual spring concert on Sunday, May 3, at St. Francis Xavier parish hall, at 3 p.m. Tickets are $5 each, and free for children 10 and under.

Beattie tribute April 24 Don’t miss A Musical Tribute to Mac Beattie at the Pakenham Community Centre on Sunday, April 24 from 2 to 5 p.m. The show is being produced and performed by Guy Jamieson and friends. For tickets call 613-624-5435.

“This money could have gone into a number of worthy projects throughout our community and we are happy they have chosen us again. The Lions have

been significant contributors to expansion projects in the past and we are very grateful they are helping with the current updates in our patient care areas,” Desilets adds.

GRAND ROUNDS Renfrew Lions Club makes $6,000 pledge The local lions have recently roared in support of the “I Choose RVH” campaign. The Foundation was presented with the first $2,000 installment of a threeyear commitment to the hospital’s major expansion and redevelopment project. “This is such a wonderful gift,” says Chris Ferguson, Vice-President of Patient Care services at RVH, noting that patients on the second floor (active care unit) will be the ones to see the benefits of this pledge. “Everyone who comes in to receive care and stays in one of the updated patient rooms will be positively impacted by this gift.”

Service clubs like the Renfrew Lions branch play a key role in raising funds for RVH. This group in particular has a longstanding history of commitment to the hospital, comments RVH Foundation Executive Director Barb Desilets. Records show the Renfrew Lions Club has donated more than v$500,000 since 1989. The majority of funds from the current gift were raised through sales of Nevada tickets, which are available at the Mac’s gas bar. Every dollar raised by the Lions goes directly back into the community.

The Renfrew Lions Club presents its first installment of $2,000 towards its threeyear commitment to RVH. In the photo are: Chris Ferguson, RVH Vice President of Patient Care Services, Doug Headrick, Bob Boyer, Barb Desilets, RVH Foundation Executive Director, Paul Carron, Randy Penney, RVH President & CEO, and John Bromilow.

Benefit dance on April 15 to support baby Evelyn

Message from Queen’s Park

Tiffany Lepack

tlepack@metroland.com

Monthly Column by MPP John Yakabuski

Little Evelyn Furniss is a beautiful eight-month-old baby girl. Sadly her life has not been easy as her family and doctors try to figure out what exactly is wrong with her. In February she was admitted to the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) due to non-stop seizures. She spent weeks in the intensive care unit. From early on things just didn’t seem right; she didn’t have the same strength as other children of similar age. She has been tested for approximately 80 different syndromes and diseases. Now her parents, Melanie and Jeff Furniss wait to see what the results will be. The couple lives on River Road between Arnprior and Renfrew and is well known in both communities. They have also found out is her cerebellum, which is essentially the hard drive of a person’s brain, has stopped growing and will never grow again. She also has vision problems, which cannot be corrected with glasses or any other method. Friends and family are doing everything they can to support her parent’s as they prepare to face a huge financial burden. Evelyn has now been released from the hospital and Melanie cares for her around the clock with medical equipment from CHEO. A benefit dance is planned for April 15 at St. John Chrysostom Parish Hall in Arnprior at 8 p.m. Tickets are $5 each and can be purchased at the door. Stephanie Schubrink is helping to plan the event. She worked with Melanie and they became best friends and is Evelyn’s godmother. Both women were pregnant at the same time. “It rocks your world, we had all these dreams and visions and it shatters that,” said Schubrink. Friends knew they had to do something. “As soon as we heard what was going on we couldn’t sit here and do nothing. We knew we would be strong and bigger with more people involved,” said Schubrink. A number of local businesses have donated prizes for raffles and a silent auction, such as a barbecue from Rona, a guided muskie fishing trip on the Ottawa River from Valley Guiding and Outfitting and a 2.5hp motor by Urban Sport. Schubrink says they haven’t had anyone who doesn’t want to help. “We have had some incredible donations. It’s been really exciting. It’s awe inspiring, it really brings everything together,” said Schubrink. “It makes you feel like your doing something good for someone who deserves it.” Milano’s Pizza in Arnprior is selling an Evelyn Spe-

A fundraiser has been planned to help the family of eight-month-old Evelyn Furniss who is suffering from an unknown medical condition. cial any size/kind of pizza Monday/ Tuesday/Wednesday and $1 from proceeds go directly to the family. She feels everyone is really working together. “I think if we start helping one family it shows that the community is stronger in numbers and it takes a village to make things happen,” said Schubrink.

Organizers are still looking for donations. “Anything helps, we won’t say no.” To donate contact Schubrink via e-mail: plascott12@gmail.com. Donation jars are also set up at The White Lake Store and the Pakenham General Store.

Now winter doesn’t want to let go, does it? Green Christmas and snow-covered ground at Easter, the weather hardly makes sense sometimes. Surely when you read this column I think we’ll have turned that corner (for this year, anyway). The recent snow and rain have raised concerns about water levels, hopefully the cooler temperatures will allow for a spring run-off without any more flooding. Speaking of snow, let me talk a little bit about Bill 100, Supporting Ontario’s Trails Act, 2016 which has certainly been the subject of recent discussion not only in my riding, but all across rural Ontario. When the Bill was introduced in May 2015, I received next-to-no feedback from those either for the legislation or opposed to it: that all changed a couple of months ago. Opponents of the Bill—primarily the Ontario Landowners Association (OLA)—became more than a little vocal in their opposition to the Bill which resulted in me receiving calls from landowners worried about how this Bill might affect them. While the OLA may disagree with my interpretation (and they are free to do so), I am offering my view based on legal opinions that our caucus has received. The big sticking point in this Bill, according to the Landowners themselves, is the section dealing with easements. The primary concern in my riding is access to trails by snowmobilers over privately-held land. Almost all, if not all of these trails today, are open on the basis of an agreement between the landowner and the local club. I’m not aware of a single trail through RenfrewNipissing-Pembroke where there is an agreement through easement between the landowner and the snowmobile club. The legal opinion that we have received, quite simply put, is that landowners should not be concerned about protecting their property rights if they continue with the current arrangement. There is no requirement for a landowner to enter into an easement—nor is any snowmobile club interested in having any such arrangement either. Landowners and recreationalists have gotten along quite well under the old system and there is no reason to believe that the system can’t continue regardless of what is proposed in Bill 100. I want to point out that we—through our Tourism, Culture and Sport Critic MPP Steve Clark—requested that the government not proceed with the Bill until all the concerns of constituents had been addressed. If this due diligence had been completed from the beginning, this firestorm which has engulfed us could have been avoided. It is another case of the government proceeding with legislation without properly consulting all affected stakeholders. MPP Clark has proposed on our behalf that the Bill should be amended to clarify completely all the implications of the Bill. The Legislation must state clearly that any agreements by easements must be voluntary. Minister Coteau needs to incorporate the same language into the bill that he used in a statement he released in an attempt to quell the fears of property owners. To quote the Minister’s own words, “An easement pursuant to Bill 100, if passed, would be a voluntary agreement between a landowner and an eligible body or bodies. No property owner would be compelled to provide an easement unless they agreed to do so.” I believe this assurance would be helpful in providing some comfort to landowners. Having said that, I completely respect the rights of landowners. If someone makes a decision to not allow people cross their property, that is within their rights as the property owner. However, I would hope that anyone who has an existing trail on their property would not close it based on any fear that Bill 100 extinguishes their property rights. R0013775341

Toronto Raptors trainer from Renfrew looks forward to playoffs sity of Toronto when an injury changed his course. “I hurt my knee and saw how much the therapists enjoyed their jobs. From that point I worked towards getting my degree in athletic therapy and working in professional sports,” said McCullough. “In high school I enjoyed spending time all my teammates/ friends and being taught by some wonderful teachers/coaches. Playing sports in high school helped me to become a part of a team, where everyone has a role.” McCullough received his bachelor’s degree in physical education from the University of Toronto in 1992 and in 1993 served as a student athletic therapist with the hockey and football teams. McCullough was a clinical physical therapist at the University of Ottawa and Mount Sinani Hospital in Toronto in 1995 and also served as an athletic therapist at the Edmonton Sports Institute in 1994. Before joining the Raptors he was the head athletic trainer for the Memphis Grizzlies for six years.

The Toronto Raptors are gearing up for the playoffs with a little help from a Renfrew native. Scott McCullough has been the head athletic trainer for the team since 2006 and is also a Renfrew Collegiate Institute alumni. The Raptors have clinched the top spot in the Atlantic division and are currently sitting with a 54-26 record. The last game of the season is Wednesday, April 13, when the team travels to Brooklyn to play the Nets. In a recent e-mail interview with the Renfrew Mercury McCullough says there is not much difference between the regular season and the playoffs for him. His role is to manage and treat existing injuries and perform the corrective/preventative programs with all his players. “The playoffs are so much more focused and intense,” said McCullough. “Every game is magnified.” He says there is one thing he looks forward to come playoff time. “The one thing I really look forward to is hearing the Canadian national anthem at the (Air Canada Centre). It is an amazing experience having the entire crowd, inside and outside the (Air Canada Centre) singing together; it brings goose bumps every time!” McCullough has had a busy year, as he was also the Eastern Conference athletic trainer during the NBA All-Star Game on Feb. 14, a role he also held at the 2011 game in Los Angeles. This time around it was a totally different experience. “With hosting the event this year, I was responsible for helping arrange and set up the medical rooms for the events at the Air Canada Centre and Ricoh Coliseum,” said McCullough. “I was leaving our house in Oakville around 6 a.m. and getting home around 1 a.m. In 2011 I only had to show up for the events. I stayed in a hotel across the street from the Staples Center.” Even with the busy schedule he said it was a great honour and an exciting time for both the city and the organization. “I think the city and organization did an absolutely amazing job,” said McCullough. “I have received messages from players, staff and the NBA commenting on how well everything went.” The Western conference team defeated the Eastern team with a whopping score of 196-173. “Like any All-Star game, there was no defense, it an offensive game for the fans to enjoy,” said McCullough. “I enjoyed the whole weekend. It was nice to spend time with current players as well as ex-players that I have worked with in the past.” After 20 seasons in the NBA and 18 All-Star appearances it was Kobe Bryant’s last game. “It was a wonderful tribute to a great career and I enjoyed being a part of it.” LOOKING BACK

McCullough has been with the team now for 10 years and he says the best part is helping individuals when they are injured and being able to work with some of the best athletes in the world. The job also has some challenges. “The biggest challenge is the long hours and travel,” McCullough. “We are gone about 100 days over the season, along with summer league. There is no offseason and I am on call 24/7/365.” McCullough says while he was in high school he wanted to be a physical education teacher and was on his way to getting his teaching certificate at the Univer-

Biggest spiel of the year at RCC Behind the Glass

The Renfrew Curling club closed its season with the biggest spiel of the year, the annual Gord Eady hosted, Dagenais Community Spiel held from March 31 to April 2. Twenty-two teams competed in the community division and another eight in the Legends. In the Brian Yolkowskie Construction-sponsored Legends Division, opening action had the Andy Sklepowicz squad defeating Cory Corbin’s crew, Rob Warren’s foursome over Ed Lepack’s lads, the Andy Miller skipped, Don Armitage army over the Brian Yolkowskie’s rink, while in the battle of the Scotts it was Uncle George and his gang over Lauren’s and Nathan’s young guns. Round two had Warren over Sklepowicz when Andy’s double for the win only did half its job, the elder Scott and his Hot Shooters prevailed over Miller, Lepack defeated the Ryan Dicker skipped Corbin crew and Yolkowskie’s vets took Nathan’s rooks. In the championship round the team of Rob Warren, Don Rouble, Jim Berg and Andy Humphries took the A title and top money, stopping George Scott’s great run. The Lepack team played a steady game to steal the win from the Yolkowskie crew to take the B. In the battle of the Andys, it was Miller over Sklepowicz for the C. And in the Young Guns shootout it was a new look Corbins gang over Nathan Scott’s squad. Taking the Renfrew Golf Club Draw was the Northcote team made up of Diane Burns, Paul Manwell,

Karen Hoad and Bob Briscoe. The winner of the Barkers Draw was Brenda’s Bunnies, aka Brenda and Dwight Johnston and Bud and Nancy Lance. And the overall winners of the Fifth Annual Dagenais Spiel and also the J.S. Wilson Draw were Sher Moscaliuk, Anne Windle, Theresa Mann with Barb Roy and Laura Hansen at lead. Winning top money in the Mack MacKenzie hotshot competition was Dan Bennett. Once again a fantastic job by Gord and his helpers especially Yvonne Sklepowicz and her magnificent kitchen staff who prepared and served more than 150 meals on Saturday, the tireless bar staff that were called on in times of celebration or the drowning of sorrows. Great entertainment was provided by the Mixed Nuts and magician John Fremont could make anything disappear except Dave Eady, despite the pleas of his team. A huge thanks to all the sponsors that help make this event the social and financial highlight of the curling year. This is also the last call for chicken or steak orders for the closing dinner, Saturday, April 16. This is a great way to end a very successful season and enjoy a great meal and then the music of the Gib Rozon band.

Horton youth soccer program set to kick off Tiffany Lepack

tlepack@metroland.com

Horton is on the ball. So much so it already has 60 children signed up for its newly formed soccer program. The Horton recreation committee and council members approved two motions to help move the program along at its meeting on April 5. The first was to confirm the registration cost of $60 for the youth program for under six and under eight players. The second was to purchase 60 soccer balls, whistles, pylons and mesh bags at a cost of $3,076. Kathleen Rogers, recreation manager, told the committee Sport Renfrew had donated $1,000 to the program. When the program was first discussed at council it was going to run on a field at the Horton Com-

munity Centre after the grass was cut. One suggestion from one of the parent organizers is to clear, level, grade and sod a field at a cost of $18,831. At this time council has not approved this cost. “We have been requested by the users to have space for three games at once, which results in an area to be maintained of 125’x305,’ which is beyond councils initial thought on size of field needed,” said Mackie McLaren, chief administration officer for the Township of Horton. “Council is currently investigating how they can accommodate this.” The program will run on Wednesday nights from May 25 to July 13, the under six group will play from 6 to 8 p.m. and the under eight will play from 7 to 8 p.m. A Meet the Coach Night for Horton Soccer is planned for April 27 at 6 p.m. at Horton Community Centre 1005 Castleford Rd.

This contract is for the rehabilitation of a 350 metre long structure over the Madawaska River located on County Road 2 (White Lake Road), approximately 2.0 km south of Highway 417. The two year multi-stage project - with completion scheduled for November 30th 2017 - will include removal of safety curbs, concrete re-facing of parapet walls, patch, waterproof and pave bridge deck, replacement of expansion joints, jacking and bearing repairs, localized steelwork repairs and localized steel coating work. The project also includes concrete repairs to substructure, approach guide rail replacement and some minor approach roadwork. A certified cheque or bank draft not less than the amount specified in the tender requirements must accompany each tender and the successful bidder will be required to provide a 100% performance bond and 50% materials and labour payment bond upon execution of the contract agreement. Companies that wish to submit a tender for this contract must register with the Department in order to receive the tender documents and to be eligible to submit a tender. Tenders submitted by unregistered bidders will not be accepted. Electronic PDF files of the plans, specifications and tender form are free of charge for registered bidders. Miss Teen Ontario East gets underway at 7 p.m. at the Renfrew Rec Centre on Sunday, April 17 32 The Renfrew Mercury - Thursday, April 14, 2016

Kathleen Barr, Miss Teen Ontario East 2015, will crown her successor at the 2016 Miss Teen Ontario East Pageant Sunday April 17 at the Renfrew Recreation Centre. Eighteen delegates from throughout the region will be arriving for pageant weekend and will be participating in a series of preliminary judging activities, doing some charity appearances and learning about the Teen Ontario East’s charity platform childhood cancer. The Teen Ontario East Pageant is the only not-for-profit regional qualifying pageant for which all proceeds from the pageant production and the year’s fund raising efforts are directly donated to childhood cancer charities. The pageant organization consists entirely of volunteers and is renowned throughout the pageant society for its compassionate and genuine titleholders. The Teen Ontario East Pageant is an official qualifying pageant to Miss Teenage Canada and this year has announced a new national affiliation with Canada’s Ambassador Pageant. In addition, in their 10th year,

the Teen Ontario East Pageant is offering a registration scholarship to the Top Model Search Canada competition that Renfrew’s very own Delaney Holley competed in and won in 2014. The 10th anniversary pageant production is shaping up to be an amazing show and will feature guest entertainer Katie-Lynn Harper, the 2015 Miss Teenage Canada talent winner. Tickets for the event are $12 and are available at Keeping Company, Dahl’s Convenience, J&J Chocolate Sensations and the Renfrew Recreation Centre. As mentioned, all proceeds from the show are donated to Childhood Cancer so not only will you be supporting the 18 delegates participating but by attending, you will also be enriching the life of a child with cancer. The show starts at 7 p.m. The delegates and their sponsors are: * Natalie Artymko sponsored by Mad Outdoors * Madi Bellisle sponsored by Highland Construction * Katie Coupal sponsored by Mickey’s Promotions * Sophia Decarle sponsored by Mada-

Think of the Renfrew Fair when considering your garden Renfrew Fair

Spring is upon us and with that, thoughts of gardens. While you are considering what to plant this year, why not take a look at the floriculture list for the 2016 Renfrew Fair. The list is ready now and can be picked up at the office in the Armouries. If you can grow a plant, you can find a class to enter. There are entries for cut flowers, established plants and floral arrangements As soon as one fair is over, the committee meets to discuss concerns and to make up a new list for the following year. We try to make enough changes to make it fun and challenging for our exhibitors.

Included in the entries for cut flowers are petunias, marigolds, asters and gladiolus and many more. A new entry this year in established plants is ‘fairy garden,’ which is a miniature garden containing established small plants. Entries are judged on the quality of the exhibit, the cleanliness of the plant and container and following the directions in each class. In Loving Memory of our Dear Son Michael Patrick Roche November 7, 1982 - April 17, 2015 “The moment that you died, Our hearts split in two, The one side filled with memories, The other died with you. We often lay awake at night, When the world is fast asleep, And take a walk down memory lane, With tears upon our cheeks. Remembering you is easy, We do it every day, But missing you is a heartache, That never goes away. We hold you tightly within our hearts, And there you will remain, Life has gone on without you But it will never be the same.” We will love you forever Mom and Dad

In Loving Memory of a dear Husband Doug Doucett April 13, 2014 and a Loving Son Andy June 11, 2006. I wish heaven had a phone, so I could hear your voice again. I thought of you today, but that is nothing new. I thought of you yesterday and the days before too. I think of you in silence I often speak your name. All I have is memories and a photo in a frame. Your memory is a keepsake, from which I’ll never part. God has both of you in his arms And I have both of you in my heart. Your loving wife Gert, Family & Friends

We took our vows together, Said “Till death do us part” But when God came and took your hand My whole world fell apart No one knows the heartache, I try so hard to hide. Only God knows how many times, I’ve broken down and cried, When I look back upon our lives, One of the things that makes me glad, Is that you chose me to share with you, The precious years we had. Forever, Joan

PRAYER TO the Blessed Virgin, never to fail! Oh most beautiful flower of Mount Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of heaven. Blessed Mother of the Son of God. Immaculate Virgin, assist me in necessity, Oh Star of the Sea. Help me and show me, here you are “my mother”. Oh Holy Mary Mother of God, Queen of heaven and earth. I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to secure me in my necessity (make request). There are none that can withstand your power. Oh Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3 times). Say this prayer for three consecutive days and then you must publish it and it will be granted to you. MGS

Hand-me-down box came with a colourful surprise

The Spring hand-me-down box from Aunt Lizzie was waiting for us at the station in Renfrew. The stationmaster had called...a man of few words, and all he said was, “it’s here.” We knew exactly what he was talking about. It would mean a trip into Renfrew with the flat-bottomed wagon. The wooden box, which had one time held bulk tea and was lined with a heavy silver kind of paper, was much too big for the buggy. So the team was hitched to the wagon, and Father made the 12-and-ahalf-mile trip into Renfrew. It was almost suppertime by the time we saw Father come in the lane. With the three brothers helping, the big box was heaved into the kitchen, where it would sit until our evening meal was over, the kitchen redded up, and our hands washed. I could never understand why we all had to wash our hands before we could touch an old and badly marked-up box that came all the way from Regina on the CPR train. Very seldom was there anything AUCTIONS

in the box besides boy’s clothes and well-worn men’s suits and shirts from Uncle Jack. It was like my sister Audrey and I didn’t even exist, as far as Aunt Lizzie was concerned. Sometimes, there was a piece of material for Mother, or a pair of high-heeled shoes, which fit no one in our family. That night, sitting around the box, as Everett pried off the lid with the crowbar, in my mind’s eye, I thought we looked just like my Sunday school class at the Lutheran Church at Northcote...all in a circle around Miss Kallies. And it wasn’t any more exciting either! Why Audrey and I even bothered to sit and wait for the box to be unpacked was beyond me!

CAREER DEVELOPMENT

Well, were we in for a surprise! Sitting on the very top of the pile of clothes was a big red leghorn hat. (I had no idea why they were called leghorn hats, since I thought a leghorn was a hen running around in the barnyard!) But there it was, one of Aunt Lizzie’s hats. She loved red, and Audrey said that’s why it was Mother’s least favourite colour. The crown of the hat was mashed down as flat as a pancake by the lid of the box, but the brim was in perfect condition. I thought the hat would be perfect for the days my little friend Velma and I dressed up in our mother’s clothes to play house. Well, Mother had a different idea. It was like someone had just handed her a $100 dollar bill! She went right to the mirror at the back door, wearing the hat. My sister let out a snicker. “Mother, you can’t wear that with the crown all smashed down.” A flat crown was not going to stop Mother from wearing the hat, and she went right to the wood box

The simple act of recycling has more impact on the environment than the average Canadian thinks. The amount of wood and paper North Americans throw away each year is enough to heat five million homes for 200 years. CAREER DEVELOPMENT

I was torn. Should I try to stuff the piece back into the hat, tell Mother what was happening, or let nature take its course? I decided to poke the paper back into the hat, which caused Mother to glare down at me as if I had committed some deadly sin. I whispered to her, as quietly as I could what was happening, which caused the minister to glare down at me, but I could tell Mother was grateful. Heaven forbid that the entire Lutheran Church know that her beautiful leghorn hat was stuffed with the Renfrew Mercury! She never wore the hat again, but Velma and I were thrilled to prance around the house in it, pretending we were one of those rich women from Renfrew, who bought eggs and butter from our Mothers every Saturday. where a stack of Renfrew Mercury papers were at the ready, and scrunched up several and crammed them into the hat. Right before our eyes we could see the hat transformed into something that would only be seen on the head of one of Renfrew’s riches women! I knew the hat would be going to the Lutheran Church on Sunday! And it did. And it certainly caught the attention of the other ladies. Many complimented Mother, which pleased me no end! We took our pew and Father had to move over from Mother, because the wide brim of the hat caught him square in the face when she turned her head. So I sat beside her, taking many a look at Aunt Lizzie’s hat that had found new life out there in Renfrew county. Halfway through the sermon, I glanced at the hat, and poking out, just above Mother’s ear, was a good sized piece of the Renfrew Mercury advertising silk bloomers at .20 cents a pair.

First Nation Algonquins have lived in present-day Ontario for thousands of years, long before Europeans arrived. The Bromley Historical Society is pleased to welcome Aimee Bailey and Skip Harold of the Algonquins of Pikwàkanagàn First Nation who will speak on the Migration of the Anishnabe. Aimee Bailey has been dedicated to the revival of Algonquin cultural heritage for well over 40 years. Her accomplishments include the founding of the Circle of Turtle Lodge, a not-forprofit organization committed to reviving Algonquin cultural traditions, as well as a Cultural Centre in Pikwàkanagàn, housing a ‘living collection’ of many objects of Algon-
