Town: no construction downtown in 2017 after major grant awarded Tiffany Lepack tlepack@metroland.com

Renfrew received the biggest chunk of the pie when it came to the Connecting Links grant, with $3 million going toward downtown road repairs. There are 19 municipalities that will share $25 million in provincial funding to help repair roadways and bridges that connect two ends of a provincial highway through a community. The announcement was made on March 30, and at the April 11 Renfrew council meeting, Renfrew development and works director Mike Asselin provided an update to ease any scheduling concerns. The grant provides $3 million of the $6.17 million needed to complete the rehabilitation

of Highway 60 (Raglan Street South) from Hall Avenue to Bonnechere River Bridge. About $2 million is allocated for improvements of underground water and wastewater systems that were not replaced in previous downtown projects. Asselin assures it will be business as usual in downtown Renfrew this year. “There will be very little downtown disruptions over the summer months in 2017 other than to see surveyors and engineers collecting information required for design,” said Asselin. “The main construction activity is proposed in spring, summer and fall of 2018. The town will include provisions in the contract to maintain access to storefronts during construction.” The town has already met with the Downtown Business Improvement Association

and the Renfrew and Area Chamber of Commerce on the project and they have committed to reach out to all merchants during the design process to discuss mitigation measures and specific issues related to each property. “We understand that no project of this nature can proceed without impacts during construction,” said Asselin. “We look forward to working with the community to minimize impacts and to successfully complete this project. We are certain the end product will serve Renfrew well for many years afterwards.” Reeve Peter Emon, who was sitting as acting mayor since Mayor Don Eady was away, praised staff for their hard work on the project. He noted after the minister of transportation visited Renfrew in December that

Steven Del Duca and his office were very impressed with the presentation and the completeness of the application that was submitted. “I would like to reassure, the public, the press, and staff this has not happened by accident. This was a concentrated effort to develop a long-term strategy by staff,” said Emon. “This is a fairly significant award and I think it recognizes the excellence of the presentation by both directors and county and recognizing the minister’s commitment. It’s a very good news story on a number of levels, but it took some time to bake this cake.” Coun. Tom Sidney said he is starting to hear buzz about the project and asked for clarification as some people were pointing out main street was just done in 2000. Coun. Mike Coulas also asked what was done in 1980. In 2000 the storm water was replaced and at the time the decision was made to leave the water main in place, explained Asselin. In 2000 the curb work was done, but anything beyond that was not done since 1980. He also explained there is hydro planning issues on the street and the only way to fix that is to rip up the asphalt and redo it. In 1980-81 they mainly dug up hydro and redid street lighting, sidewalk renovations, streetscape elements but no sanitary or water main work. “None of the comments are meant to criticize previous councils. Councils make the best decisions based on technology, fiscal ability at the time,” said Emon. “They were made with the best intentions and served more than adequately. The infrastructure replacements that are needed at this time are because they are at the end of their life.”

cil. “We, RCI Relay for Life, would like to challenge you the town council to put together a team and then also challenge other service clubs, other churches, other councils to make a team and help the Canadian Cancer Society,” said Bossy. Emon said he would be sending out an email to set up their team. “I should offer that last year our team ran into a problem, I got hurt and couldn’t make it, I couldn’t walk,” Emon explained. “We were in it the year before and you are likely to see us again.” Council approved the student’s requests to use Low Square and Ma-Te-Way park for their events. The next big event is the RCI Relay for Life Community Awareness Day on May 6

Myers Volkswagen OUR DEALS WILL WARM YOU UP 2016

Town of Renfrew council gave the students behind the 11th annual Relay for Life a huge round of applause as they presented their past successes and future plans to council on April 11. In 2016 the Renfrew Collegiate Institute (RCI) Relay for Life raised $78,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society. Reeve Peter Emon, who was sitting in the mayor’s chair as the acting head of council as Mayor Don Eady was absent from the meeting, was very impressed with the student’s efforts. “We are very proud of what you do, being the number 1 school is quite an accomplishment,” said Emon. “Thank you for that. You bring a certain reputation to the town and we are very fortunate to have that, so thank you.” Overall they have raised $855,000 and are the number one fundraiser in Canada for high schools and universities and this year their goal is to raise over $80,000. “I would like to give a big thank you to the council. You have given us a lot of support in the past and I would like to thank you for that and any continued support you give us in the future years,” said John Bossy, student chair. Bossy was on hand with committee members Brendan Barber, head of finance, Willow McGregor, head of ceremonies, and Moira Bennett, head of registration. The group was there to promote their upcoming events and seek council approval. The first big event is the community pancake breakfast on Friday, April 21 from 7 to 8:30 a.m. The cost is $5, which gets you pancakes, sausages and a drink. New this year, they will be offering take out. Call or text 613-570-1804 or 613-432-4858 to place your order and they will have it ready for you for pick up. “It is open to everyone in the public; we are hoping to get more community members to come out this year,” said Bennett. “Especially some more council members to come out. Coun. Tom Sidney will be the celebrity pancake flipper at the event this year.” She said the main goal is to raise more awareness. “We want to get more community members out and really push Relay this year so we can reach our financial goal,” said Bennett. There was some lighthearted ribbing around the council table on the role Sidney will be playing in the event.

“I am glad to see that Tom has been promoted; last year he was just serving juice,” said Emon. Sidney was one of the many around the council table who praised the student’s efforts over the years and the new team members who always step up. As to being picked on for his pancake skills: “Anyone can come and flip pancakes,” said Sidney with a laugh. “It’s pretty impressive to see that pancake line, it’s a well-oiled machine. You see the two or three fryers and then in the back there are 50 people in the back making batter. You guys do a fantastic job and I want to commend you and all the past and future students.” Bossy also issued a challenge to the coun-

Sens fever has struck

Spring has sprung, at last, and with it comes spring fever, the Ottawa Senators version – you know, the fever that turns you red, raises your voice and otherwise turns you into a rabid fan. Sens flags start appearing everywhere. The Red Mile along Elgin Street comes to life as those afflicted with “the fever” flock there not in search of any cure but in search of the camaraderie and contact with others that this fever craves. And the fever seems to loosen tongues so you hear everyone – around the water cooler, at the bar, around the kitchen table – talking Sens hockey. Erik Karlsson is the best defenceman in the National Hockey League, some say. No, Erik is the best player in the whole world, others counter. And that Clarke MacArthur – boy, what a story it will be when he sparks the team to the Stanley Cup. And what about that Derick Brassard. He has flourished in the Stanley Cup playoffs before and that is why the Sens got him in the first place. Sens goalies Craig Anderson and Mike Condon are great stories – Craig supporting his wife Nicholle in her battle with cancer and Mike showing he is one solid goalie when other teams gave him a pass. There’s just so much to talk about these Sens of ours. But then, that’s the fever, isn’t it! Even the smallest of things can affect the fever and make it go viral. Case in point – Marc Methot’s finger. Imagine that, a little pinky playing a role in a Stanley Cup playoff series. Who would have guessed? But this is what “the fever” can and does do. And, you know what – in a world that at times seems so dangerous and unpredictable with terrorists, chemical warfare, famine and eccentric leaders, it is refreshing and relaxing in a way to be affected with Sens fever. You can be passionate and cheer heartily and, at the end of the day, you get to enjoy the victories and lament the losses and know that, Stanley Cup or not, there will be only good times all along the way. There is, thankfully, no vaccine or antidote for Sens fever. We should be so glad of that. Hopefully this year it’s going to be a long, long fever season, lasting for weeks and weeks. Go, Sens, go!

From the Renfrew Archives: Cosy Corner Tea Room To mark Canada’s 150th, Heritage Renfrew has put together a series of historical photos and stories to run regularly in the Renfrew Mercury. This is the first in the series. The Cosy Corner Tea Room was operated by Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Wadsworth. It was located at 296 Raglan St. S. where the present day Sears building is located. On the left of the picture is the Garvie shoe repair shop and next to it is the Ernie Bryon electrical shop. Next to that was a yard where farmers could tie and feed their horses. On the far side to the south of this lot was I.E. Pedlow’s dry goods store. The entire row of buildings was owned by I.E. Pedlow. The street to the right is Prince Avenue. The Cosy Corner Tea Room was operated by the Wadsworths from 1930 to 1943. Despite all the hard times, the business flourished, due to the warm hospitality and good, home-cooked food. Renfrewites would gather Friday evening and Saturdays for a dish of ice cream. Along the trail with Macnamara A century ago there lived a man in Arnprior whose name should be, but sadly isn’t, a household name in Canada. Charles Macnamara was the secretary-treasurer for the McLachlin Bros. Lumber Company and his fame should have arisen not only from his 46-year tenure with that company but also from what he accomplished outside of it. Macnamara was a pioneer of photography and natural history studies. His black and white photographs beautifully documented the early lumber industry. Men risking their lives to untangle logjams, horses hauling giant timbers through wintry landscapes – many of the finest records of that important part of early Canadian history are his. Charles Macnamara also turned his discerning eye and camera toward nature. Every Sunday, his one day off work, Macnamara would walk from his Daniel Street home in Arnprior to his log cabin in Marshall Bay. His weekly sojourns were recorded in diaries lavishly illustrated with photographs ranging from abstract rock formations to rare ferns clinging to rocky

Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MP Cheryl Gallant made a recent visit to the Admaston/Bromley Township office, and she came bearing gifts. The MP was on hand to present funding for two projects -- website improvements and the reconstruction of Micksburg Road. Total cost of improvements to the township’s website will be $4,500 and $2,200 is coming from the federal Enabling Accessibility Fund. The funding will help officials make the website more mobile-friendly. “A web page that was set up for a laptop or desktop, you need to have it now for a mobile device,” said Mayor Michael Donohue. “More and more what we are seeing – a significantly increasing year over year, number of our residents are getting their information electronically,” said Donohue. There remain some significant gaps in connectivity in terms of high-speed Internet, Donohue noted. He expressed thanks on behalf of the township to the Eastern Ontario Regional Network for expanding the footprint of high-speed service. “We have looked at fibre optic, it’s still for our 2,600 residents and the property tax base we have in this com-

“There are definitely challenges for us given the penetration that electronics have had on the economy in the world,” he said. “At home my wife works for a multinational company and her team are in Paris and Phoenix and I think Costa Rica. So from Douglas where she looks out the window and sees a cow scratching on the Inukshuk , she’s talking with somebody in Paris,” said Donohue. “There’s no question it has opened the world to the world.”

TOWNSHIP OF HORTON GARBAGE AND RECYCLING COLLECTION The Township of Horton has awarded Garbage collection services to CANADIAN WASTE MANAGEMENT GARBAGE shall continue to be collected weekly. RECYCLING collection will be Bi-weekly starting May 2017. The first collection will be Monday May 8th and Tuesday May 9th, 2017. Both streams of recycling will be collected at the same time.

Gallant praised council’s efforts to improve online access for the township residents. The other funding contribution is $120,000 to improve Micksburg Road. The grant is part of Canada 150 infrastructure funds and makes up 50 per cent of the total cost of the project. Work will be done on Micksburg Road from County Road 8 to where Admaston/Bromley meets up with Laurentian Valley at Stoqua Creek Road. The project will be done this construction season, explained the mayor. “In identifying how it lent itself toward the celebration the nation is having this year is that the one-time municipal office for the township of Bromley, which is now the home and headquarters of the Bromley Historical Society, is located at Osceola.” A cairn of some sort will be erected at the site, he said, and they hope the monument will include a QR code, a matrix bar code that downloads information onto a person’s device. “There’s a limited amount of space in a real 3D monument,” said Donohue. “With a QR code, essentially you can have half a book with one read of this cairn. You take a picture of that blob and all the information appears on your device.” He thanked Gallant for the funding. “We’re quite thrilled with the federal contribution to the rehabilitation of Micksburg Road,” said Donohue. “We’re happy to have that.”

COMMUNITY-BASED ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT PLAN The Township of Horton is creating a new community-based economic development plan and will be holding a series of workshops over the next few months as part of this process. At the first two workshops we are seeking the input of local seniors aged 55 and over and youth aged 15 to 24. Seniors’ Workshop Where: Horton Community Centre, 1005 Castleford Rd. When: Thursday, April 20, 2017 Time: 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Youth Workshop

You must continue to separate your recycling into two streams. You must place all Blue Bins and Garbage to the curb prior to 7 am on the day of collection.

Where: Horton Community Centre, 1005 Castleford Rd. When: Thursday, April 20, 2017 Time: 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

A new Recycle Calendar will be arriving in the mail to all Horton residents or you may view on the township website at www.hortontownship.ca. The calendar is from May 1, 2017 to January 31, 2018.

The workshops will be led by Professor Chris Fullerton from Brock University’s Department of Geography & Tourism Studies. He will lead participants through a range of questions and will encourage everyone in attendance to voice their opinions and ideas about a number of economic development topics. These will range from a discussion about the Township’s quality-of-life through to the consideration of ways in which job opportunities for the Township’s labour force might be increased.

New Parkinson support group in Renfrew Tiffany Lepack tlepack@metroland.com

There are 22 different Parkinson support groups in Eastern Ontario and a new group has recently started back up in Renfrew. The first meeting was April 5 and the group will meet the first Wednesday of each month at the Bonnechere Manor 470 Albert St., in Renfrew. The next meeting is set for May 3 from 2 to 4 p.m. “The support group is a space for people living with Parkinson’s and their care partners to share their different daily struggles, there is information, positive discussion and emotional support,” Margaux Wolfe, community development co-ordinator for Eastern Ontario Parkinson Canada. “It’s an opportunity to share about living with the disease.” It is a drop-in meeting and people do not have to register. If people would like more information, she encourages them to call her on 613722-9238, ext. 206 or via email margaux.wolfe@ parkinson.ca. She describes the group as a place of understanding. “It’s a place where everyone understands living with Parkinson,” said Wolfe. “It’s a place to find answers. People might be experiencing the same things or a chance to talk about day-to-day obstacles.” Renfrew’s Ed Boose, attended the support group before it went on a break and was at the first meeting April 5, which he said was a very good and supportive meeting. “The support group will help people in many ways,” said Boose. “About mobility issues now and down the road, what Parkinson’s is doing and they will find a lot of help at the group.”

Boose said he never missed a meeting and likes it because it is open to anyone; he encourages people to come and check it out. “The help they receive (at the group) makes their disability more understandable,” said Boose. The group will also, occasionally have guest speakers. “Usually driven by the support group, if someone is interested, for example we may have a dietician,” said Wolfe. “We want the group to take direction of the group.” The group is being led by social worker Lynn Lavery. “She is a very knowledgeable person,” said Wolfe. “She seems to be a very good fit for people with Parkinson.” Wolfe admits that every group is different and that is the ‘beauty’ of support groups. “You make friends and feed off each other,” said Wolfe. April is also Parkinson’s Awareness month because Dr. James Parkinson, who first wrote about tremors and is best known for his 1817 work An Essay on the Shaking Palsy, was born on April 11, 1755. The three main pillars of Parkinson’s Canada are support, education and research/advocacy. There are 100,000 Canadians living with Parkinson and there is currently no cure, you can live with the disease for years as the symptoms are treated with medication. “We really want to reach out to the people with Parkinson’s disease so they can learn about us and what we can offer them in terms of service,” said Wolfe. “It’s one thing to do the research, which is great; We want to offer hope and help.”

Some of the best hay in Eastern Ontario hails from right here in Renfrew County. Maynard van der Galien recently took home three ribbons for his entries at the Ottawa Valley Farm Show, a world-class showcase of agriculture. This year, van der Galien, who has a 320-acre farm in Admaston-Bromley, won first place for his second cut Alfalfa, fourth place for his first cut grass and fifth place in mixed legume. The items were judged on a number of different criteria including its colour (green), smell, texture, weight and amount of leaves.

To qualify for the show his hay was first judged to represent Renfrew County. There was only one other farmer from Beachburg, Jason Jamieson, to represent Renfrew County at the showcase. He admits the farming industry has changed over the years and less people are exhibiting. He has even changed what he grows on his farm and now produces wheat, corn, soybeans and some cattle. In the fall he earned three firstplace ribbons at the Renfrew Fair. And this isn’t the first time he has picked up ribbons from the showcase during his 44 years exhibiting in the show. But this year his win took him off

“It’s a good showcase for agriculture,” said van der Galien. He thought it was nice to walk by the large list of winners and see who won. “The winners list are up in big letters, when you see your name up there you get a great big grin, all the work going into it makes you feel really good,” said van der Galien. He cut the prize-winning hay just before the Renfrew Fair, but how does one decide which is the best of the best to enter between two of his favourite picks. “I couldn’t decided which to send, they were both good,” said van der Galien. “So I stuffed them both in the bag and ya it won!”

guard. “I heard it on the radio and I figured I won for grass and then I went and I got first for my Alfalfa,” said van der Galien. “It was a surprise, I thought I would win for grass. There are a lot of people who make good second cut.” He says winning and representing Renfrew County feels good. “It feels good because they judge the hay against all of the best in Eastern Ontario, I wish I had a thousand of those bales to sell,” van der Galien said with a smile. The Ottawa Valley Farm Show was held at the EY Centre in Ottawa March 14 to 16 and he called it a very nice show.

Renfrew County Seniors’ Games sign up due by April 26

Derek Dunn/Metroland

The first year for an Ottawa Valley Pride boys’ basketball team started off a little slow, but by the time playoffs came the 12 and 13 year olds from Renfrew and Arnprior areas were firing on all cylinders. They finished with silver medals at the April 2 championship in Carleton Place. The team is, from back row left, coach Mark Valliquette, Ted Smith, Chris Chirico, Alex Reid, Zac Moore, Noah Leduc, coach Jody Moore; front row, Hudson Valliquette, Sam Dunn, Marcus Legnaro, Cameron Wyatt, and Tyler Lightbody. Missing is John Roach.

Devils spoil Pride’s shot at basketball gold

In early April the bantam boys from the Arnprior/Renfrew Basketball Club — Valley Pride played in the Eastern Ontario Basketball League championships. With this being the inaugural season playing in the competitive division, the team was slotted into division five at the end of the

regular season. Saturday morning saw the Pride come away with a 25-point victory over the Belleville Spirits before falling 64-56 to the Nepean Blue Devils. On Sunday started with a thrilling twopoint victory in overtime, edging out the

Naismith Gaels and setting up an afternoon rematch with the Blue Devils. Unfortunately, after a great first half which saw the Pride leading by seven points, they were unable to sustain the momentum and dropped a 58-44 decision, capturing the silver medal. Well done boys!

The Renfrew County 55+ Seniors’ Games (RC55+SG) committee is again preparing for the 2017 Summer Games season. A District of the Ontario 55+ Seniors Games Association, RC55+SG will follow the same format as in the past couple of years, and hold the events in venues throughout the county during the month of May. This arrangement has worked well in the past and relieves a single town of having to plan and prepare for these month-long activities. Called games, these events are not all physical. While there are swimming, walking and pickle ball games among other sports, many people enjoy playing in various types of euchre and bridge tournaments. To participate, competitors must register by April 26. Registration forms and schedules of events for the games can be found at recreation centres and seniors centres in all the towns, or you can call 613-628-1272 for more information. Online, RC55+SG can be accessed at http://www.osga55plus.ca/. Once there, find District 5, Renfrew County, and at the bottom of that page click on Registration and Waiver Form. Some of the games taking part in Renfrew are: pickleball on May 6 at 9 a.m.; bowling on May 8 at 9 a.m. and on May 16 at 9:30 a.m. is euchre. Games taking place in Arnprior include: swimming on May 15 (call Arnprior Recreation Department any day for an appointment; and on May 17 at 8:30 a.m. is carpet bowling. The summer games are a welcome activity, coming each year in May after a long Canadian winter. Be sure you don’t miss out on the fun and please join us this year.

Ball volunteers needed Renfrew’s Tuesday night baseball/hardball league is looking for players and umpires. The league, which has been running for at least 40 years, consists of four teams - Renfrew Legends, Arnprior Big Horns, Arnprior Athletics and Renfrew Rebels. The recreational baseball league games are played Tuesday night at the Ma-Te-Way Activity Centre. Experience is preferred, say officials. If you’re interested, call Gord Patterson at 613-432-7701.

Jack Quinn reacts to being drafted to Ottawa 67’s BMX fundraiser April 27 Jessica Cunha jessica.cunha@metroland.com

Kanata Lasers right-winger Jack Quinn is moving up. The Ottawa 67’s drafted the U18 AAA player with the team’s secondround pick – 39th overall – in the OHL priority selection draft on April 8. Quinn, who lives in Cobden and is a Grade 10 student at St. Joseph’s High School in Renfrew, said he was watching the priority selection draft online when he heard his name called. “I watched when the 67’s picked my name,” said Quinn, 15. “I was just super excited, really happy.” Jeff Jordan, head coach of the Lasers, called Quinn “an elite hockey talent” who has excelled in the sport. “He was a pleasure to coach this year that’s for sure,” said Jordan. “He’s a quiet guy but he always shows up at the rink ready to compete. He makes the guys around him better on the ice.” Jack Quinn Quinn finished the season third overall in the league with 52 points – Ottawa 67’s head coach and general manager 28 goals and 24 assists – in 45 games. Jeff Brown feels the same way. He also scored nine game-winning “Quinn is just scratching the surface on how goals. He was named Forward of the good he is going to be,” he said in a release. Month in January, won the 2016-17 Top Rookie Award, and was named to the OHL Gold Cup team along with Kanata Lasers player Alex Johnston, who was drafted by the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in the sixth round. “(Quinn’s) had some good accolades there, very well deserving,” said Jordan. “He’s just an exceptional kid. We’re really happy for him and confident he’s going to do really, really well in the years to come.”

“He has an elite hockey brain. We came into the draft with a need on the right side and we feel we addressed that in the first two rounds.” The 67’s kept it local in the first two rounds. Ottawa native and Toronto Marlboros player Graeme Clarke was the 67’s first-round pick. “Our scouts nailed it and we feel very good about our draft and who we selected,” said Brown. “We’ve added a lot more depth to our organization and there is going to be a lot of competition for jobs at camp this year.”

A group of dedicated volunteers is working hard to make the dream of a BMX course in Renfrew a reality. To help make that dream come true the group is hosting an All-Canadian Trivia Night at Rocky Mountain House on April 27 at 7 p.m. Come join us for an evening of Canadian trivia, say organizers. All proceeds go towards the building of a start gate for the new BMX track in Renfrew. They are now accepting registrations for teams of four-tosix, $50/team. To register please message Renfrew BMX on Facebook or email rochelle.buxton@sympatico.ca. Renfrew BMX is a new non-profit organization that is run by volunteers whose goal is to bring the sport of BMX racing to kids and families in Renfrew.

COMPETITIVE

Quinn said he plans to spend the summer training at the Ultimate Fitness gym in Renfrew. “Hopefully I can play there next year,” he said of the 67’s and the OHL. “It’s just the most fun sport there is. It’s the most competitive. It’s the best one you can play.” Quinn began playing hockey when he was about three years old and played AA with the Upper Ottawa Valley Aces before being drafted to the Lasers AAA team this past season. Last year, Lasers player Daniel McIntyre was drafted to the 67’s. Both McIntyre and Quinn wore jersey number 67 playing with the Lasers. “Seemingly it’s a good number to wear,” said Jordan.

Curling club closes out season ANDY SKLEPOWICZ Behind the Glass

The last column of the year is always written with mixed feelings -- as is the storing of curling gear and taking out gardening and golfing equipment. It is a sure sign of spring. Now, if only the snow still covering my yard would only figure it out. It is also time to thank the Renfrew Mercury and my ever-patient contact, Tiffany Lepack, for allowing and helping me to spread the curling news. And most of all thanks to the readers of this column who seem to enjoy my tongue-andcheek approach to reporting the goings on at the Renfrew Curling Club and especially my continuing struggle to master this challenging yet fun winter pastime ... or at least not embarrass myself. The club continues to grow as more people take up this sport and enjoy the fun. Much work also continues to be done to this aging building and some new technology has also been added to increase the enjoyment of curling. As always, to continue the success of the club,

the need for leaders and volunteers must continue to be met. So please step forward to help your club as others have. Dave Anderson and his helpers put in countless hours of work improving the infrastructure and safety of the building. Larry Beaton and his ice crew, led by ice tech Jon Wall and co-ordinated by Rob Warren and his volunteer icemen, kept our ice in great condition. Barb Westgarth's work in so many areas that involve communicating our story and improving our presence in the digital world is of professional quality. Joe Kasaboski and his crew looked after the purchase and installation of monitoring and security equipment, some of it paid for by the senior men's breakfast chefs. And finally all the volunteers, board members and supporters who ensure that Renfrew's curling experience is of the highest quality. And a special thanks to Ben Oakes whose hard work and youthful enthusiasm produced a super closing dinner and dance that was enjoyed by a large contingent of members and friends from the surrounding community. It was a fitting end to wonderful season at the curling club.

Calabogie Highlands host meet and greet On April 1, the management of Calabogie Highlands Golf Resort hosted a very successful ‘Meet and Greet’ to welcome new and returning members and to introduce their new CPGA professional, Chris Bernard. The various league executives are gearing up for the season openings starting with the wom-

en’s opening, May 4, the men’s opening May 6, and the mixed opening May 28. The Monday evening Women’s Nine for Fun is open to members and non-members and registration will be held on Monday, May 29. For all inquiries please call the pro shop at 613-752-1234.

Vipers wrestlers take on Ajax

Renfrew ladies spring basketball league dribbles into 39th season ROB WARREN

The 39th season of ladies spring league basketball resumed with three close games, including one that was decided in overtime. The Reunions led the Lumber Jills throughout the first half, closing it out at 11-10. Two quick baskets gave the Jills a three-point advantage. They managed to hold a slim margin until the Reunions tied the game (22-22) in the dying moments. Taylor Sul hit the scoreboard with three quick baskets in the first minute of overtime to propel the Reunions to a 30-26 victory. Mae Donohue (Reunions) and Judline Wren (Jills) led their teams with 10 points each. Janet Goulard scored 12 of Frances/Lemke

RENFREW VIPERS

Cooperators first 16 points as they opened up a 16-0 advantage on the Reunions. This was too much of a lead for the Reunions to overcome, although they came close. They trailed 23-12 at the half and dropped the contest 30-26. The Cooperators again started strong and opened with an 8-0 edge over the Renfrew Optometrists. The Cooperators were playing the second game of a doubleheader with only seven players and began to run out of gas. The Optometrists narrowed the margin to one point at halftime and led most of the second half. With 10 seconds left, an Optometrist three-pointer rattled around in the basket before popping out, leaving them three points shy (27-24). Melissa Penner of the Optometrists scored a game high 10 points.

On April 1, the Renfrew Vipers wrestling team took to the mats in Ajax, with over 300 athletes in attendance. The 45 Vipers ranging from tykes to bantam were on the mats warming up by 8:15 a.m. in preparation for the day’s event. While exhibiting their hard work and small town sportsmanship on and off the mats we were able to capture 34 medals. With a few athletes just finishing off the podium, coaches were impressed with the skill level the newer athletes showed, as some of our athletes moved up age divisions just to get matches and experience. The results of the day were as follows: Gold: Tucker Mulvihill, Zoey Bresnahan, Jackson Bates, Carter Troke, Bradley Fraser, Jayden Earle, Jayden Bates and Kadance Moore. Silver: Connor Johnson, Owen Mc-

Al Andrews from Douglas, and Kirk Warren from White Lake, lend their musical talents to the Valley Heritage Radio annual fundraising Radiothon during a stop at the Antrim Truck Stop.

Annual VHR Round-Up Dance set for April 30 at the Armouries Valley Heritage Radio

For 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, Valley Heritage Radio is on the air. For seven of those days – beginning April 23 – there is more than great music flowing across the airwaves of the communityowned, not-for-profit station. There is also a clear message for members of the community that their help is needed and appreciated. “Community memberships and annual donations are crucial to keep Valley Heritage Radio on the air,” said station manager Jason Marshall. The fundraising membership drive begins Sunday, April 23 and continues for a week. Volunteers and on-air personalities will be in communities across the Valley all week, as part of the annual “Out & About” visits. They’ll be bringing with them local musicians, to make it more of a party atmosphere. The Out & Abouts this year will include Almonte, Pembroke, Cobden, Eganville, Arnprior, Braeside, and Shawville. DJs will be announcing exact locations and times leading up to the event. “We love getting out to all areas in the Valley, and we know some people want to support Valley Heritage Radio, but can’t physically make it out to the station,” said Marshall. “So we’re delighted to come to them.” Also during Radiothon Week, there will be three nights

of live music on the Thomas Cavanagh Stage at the Station (3009 Burnstown Rd.). April 24 will be an Old-Time Rock ‘n’ Roll Night featuring the Fabulous Heartbeats, along with Rockin’ Johnny and other special guests. April 26 will be a Fiddle and Step Dance Night hosted by Kyle Felhaver. And you don’t want to miss Friday, April 28 as it is Country Night at the station, with some of the area’s top county music artists taking to the stage. All live shows run from 7 to 9 p.m. “The live shows at the station are free and we encourage everyone to come out and catch the fever of the Radiothon live and in person,” said Marshall. Also a highlight of the week is when ‘Mr. Fundraiser’ Art Jamieson takes to the airwaves on Friday, April 29 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Marshall says it’s never dull when Art is around, and you never know what is going to happen. The fundraising drive wraps up Sunday, April 30 with the annual Valley Round-Up Dance at the Renfrew Armouries. There will be five hours of live music guaranteed to keep everyone’s toes tapping, and a light lunch so you can keep up your energy for the dance floor. Featured talent includes the Countrymen along with special guests Tony True, Gord Barnes, Judi Moffatt, and Johnny Spinks. Also during the Round-Up Dance, Valley Heritage Radio volunteer DJ Roy Berger will attempt to set a new Guinness

Record for most knuckle pushups in a minute. He currently holds two world records for push-ups. “It’s a perfect way to wrap up an intense week of fundraising,” said Marshall. “What better way to enjoy a spring Sunday afternoon than with great friends and great music. And seeing one of our own set a new world record.” Marshall encourages people to get their tickets early. The station’s last dance in January brought a full house, and for the first time, people were turned away at the door. Woven into the week of great music is a pledge drive where members of the community are encouraged to purchase or renew memberships to the station, or make donations, said Marshall. “We are a non-profit station with more than 100 volunteers and a handful of paid staff who work tirelessly to keep the station running day in and day out,” said Marshall. “Our community membership sits at more than 1,800 members and without those supporters and their generosity, we wouldn’t be able to stay on the air.” Each day throughout the Radiothon, listeners will hear the usual blend of music and the regular shows, but there will be daily messages encouraging the listeners to support the station in any way they can, said Marshall. For more about the Radiothon, contact the station at 613-432-9873 or 888-532-9870.

Loving and devoted husband, father, and grandpa

They say there is a reason, They say that time will heal, But neither time nor reason Will change the way we feel. For no one knows the heartache, That lies beneath our smiles, No one knows how many times, We have broken down and cried, We want to tell you something, So there won’t be any doubt, You’re so wonderful to think of, But so hard to live without. Always in our hearts and thoughts, Love Bonnie, Shannon (Mike), Ryan (Heather), Matthew, Sierra and Aiden

3x136ag

Our lives go on without you, But nothing is the same, We have to hide our heartache, When someone speaks your name, Sad are the hearts that love you, Silent are the tears that fall, Living without you is the hardest part of all. You did so many things for us, Your heart was so kind and true, And when we needed someone, We could always count on you. The special years will not return, When we are all together, But with the love in our hearts, You walk with us forever.

November 14, 1953 – March 21, 2017 Forever in our hearts, Jennifer passed away peacefully on March 21 surrounded by the love and devotion of her family and girlfriends that she so deserved in her final moments. Jennifer was predeceased by her beloved Jeff (Steele) of Renfrew. Beloved daughter of James Hodges and the late Monica Martha (nee Monette). Dearest sister of Cynthia, Susan and Tim. Fond sister-in-law to Bryant, Kate and Michael. Kind and quirky aunt to Timothy. Loved by her cousins Amanda, Cathy and Louise. Great friend to her mother-inlaw Betty Steele. Jenny loved - and was so loved by - her best friends Bev, Debbie, Evelyn, Linda and Theresa. She spent many years working and enjoying times together with her loyal friends. Jennifer’s passion was with the hospitality business and she enjoyed her summers with the Polar Continental Shelf Program culinary team. She had loads of energy and a very strong work ethic. She was happiest running errands for everyone she knew, skiing at Calabogie Peaks, had a gift for finding hats and other treasures at local vintage shops, and baking and cooking for friends and family. Oh, the sweetest desserts ever and the creamiest scalloped potatoes are legendary! Jenny certainly inherited her maternal grandmother’s Irish temperament: a mix of stubborness, personal charm and warmth, and a wit that shone through adversity. She had a vivacious spirit and a strong independent streak. Jennifer showed incredible strength throughout her two year journey with ovarian cancer, remarked on by all who knew her or who were members of her medical team. She was a fighter and always held out hope that she would win her battle. An Old Irish Blessing is so fitting in this tribute to Jennifer: May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind always be at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face, And rains fall soft upon your fields. And until we meet again, May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

Silent Tears The quiet darkness of the night Brings out my greatest fears… Did you know how much you meant to me; Then I cry my silent tears, As I watched you in that little room, And I looked into your face I saw that one I knew before; In another time and place What I wouldn’t give to go back in time, For just a little while, So I could hear you laugh again. So I could see you smile Now the memories are all that’s left, Such a permanent good bye, And it seems as though they’ll never stop, These silent tears I cry.

OBST, Wanda - In memory of a dear, fun and loving sister and aunt, who was taken tragically in a car accident, April 23, 2003. Time passes… our grief remains… You can shed tears that she is gone or you can smile because she has lived. You can close your eyes and pray that she’ll come back, or you can open your eyes and see all she’s left. Your heart can be empty because you cannot see her, or you can be full of the love you shared. You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday, or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday. You can remember her and only that she’s gone, or you can cherish her memory and let it live on. You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back, or you can do what she’d want; Smile, open your eyes, love and go on. Forever in our hearts… Deb, Doug and Erin

Renfrew singer and actor Lawrence Mahusky will be performing his one-man show at Anthony’s Italian Bar and Grill at 7 p.m. on April 22. “It’s the perfect recipe for a music-hungry audience - dinner and a song or two. Mahusky promises an evening of up entertainment in cabaret style,” says an event press release. The singer will offer great musical theatre songs from Broadway shows, including My Fair Lady, Joseph And The Amazing Dream Coat and many others. In an earlier production he played the role of the baker with the Company Of Musical Theatre in Nepean, Pseudolus in A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To the Forum and sold out dinner theatre hits in Pembroke. Mahusky’s accompanist Elizabeth Brumm will tickle the ivories with a few selections of her own. “Light the candles, it is also Lawrence’s birthday as he takes the stage. Come celebrate it with him,” says the release. When not performing, Mahusky has taught weekly drama classes at the Renfrew Recreation Centre, Community Living Renfrew County South, Michelle’s School Of The Performing Arts, Nick Smith Centre, Upper Greater Madawaska in Calabogie and Ottawa Little Theatre. The weekly creative drama classes offer a variety of activities, including improv, mime, and characterization.

The day may have been chilly, but 12-and-a-half tables of avid bridge players still showed up at the Renfrew Bridge Club on April 12. Nowadays, bridge players have become very dependant on the electronic scorers located at each table. When they don’t work, as they failed to do on Wednesday, it’s a daunting job to input all the results by hand. Luckily, our club manager was equal to the task; many thanks to David Sulpher for his hard work. During the afternoon’s play, slam contracts were surprisingly plentiful. Board #4 was definitely a happy place to be for North-South pairs, as of the 12 times that it was played, there were nine

slams made. On Board #18, only Bev Kobus and Ellen Penney were able to discover a six NT slam. While on Board #25, both the Arthur HamPhyllis Brennan and the Steve Gray-Sue Phillips pairs were successful with their six-spade contracts. Congratulations to the April 12 winners: North – South: 1: Leanne Cheliak - Rick Duncan 2: Arthur Ham - Phyllis Brennan 3: Carol Sulpher - David Sulpher East – West: 1: Bonnie Beveridge Marjorie Bain 2: Ted Ambridge - Mike Nagrodski 3: Bernadette Culhane Tom Culhane

The Renfrew Mercury - Thursday, April 20, 2017 31

Mary was very careful about what went on her plate The spring melt had caused the Bonnechere to overflow its banks and even the little creek that ran below the west hill was flooding its shores. My three brothers checked the water levels every day, pitch forks at the ready. The first sign of a mud pout, swimming close to the surface, meant our suppers would soon include the ugly fish, which would just about turn my stomach when I looked at them, either alive or on a platter in the middle of the table. I always said a silent prayer of thanks when either mud pout or blood pudding was on the supper table. Thanks to that Mother, knowing how much I hated both, let me have either dinner leftovers, or a couple hard-boiled eggs and toast. And if my stomach was particularly squeamish, as it was prone to be, I was allowed to have my supper at the bake table, away from where my brother Emerson could contribute to my misery by smacking his lips with every bite, and putting his face as close to mine as he could without a reprimand from Mother. Of course, I learned at a very early age that

chicken, goose, or duck. Links of homemade sausages, smoked slabs of bacon, and head cheese (which became another one of my most hated foods after I saw how it was made), and the little barrel of pickled herring in the summer kitchen, always assured us of a hearty meal. There were more sealers of jams, jellies, apple sauce and preserves, pickles, relishes, and vegetables on the shelf in the cellar than we would ever eat before Mother was ready to put down more batches when the next fall rolled around again. At least twice a week Mother baked bread, and with our own homemade butter, we never had a meal without a plate of both sitting on the table. Although Mother’s protests did little good, Father never ended a meal without taking a piece of well-buttered bread and wiping his plate clean. We children were never allowed such behaviour, of course. We would be well into summer before the

the secret to avoiding anything I didn’t like at a meal was to simply not put it on my plate in the first place. Because the rule was hard and fast: anything you took on your plate had to be eaten! So I made awfully sure everything I took, I was prepared to eat. I also learned that there was no chance we would ever go hungry on the farm. We may have been as poor as church mice, but every meal was more than ample. There was always racks of meat hanging in the smoke house, with more canned in jars in the cellar. And of course, every Sunday we had roast

sauerkraut barrel showed signs of being empty, and we never seemed to run out of potatoes, or vegetables buried in sand in the cellar. Of course, there were things Mother couldn’t get away without buying. Sugar, flour, little cans of spices from the Rawleigh man, or lemons and raisins when she could spare a few pennies out of her “egg money.” We all had hearty appetites, especially Father and my three brothers. Mother said they ate like it was their last meal on earth. But I was very careful what I piled on my plate because I was always conscious of Mother’s rule, “Eat everything you take, because if you don’t, you are taking it right out of the mouth of a starving Armenian.” I had no idea who these starving Armenians were, but I was pretty sure they lived in Arnprior. THIS WEEK’S PUZZLE ANSWERS IN NEXT WEEKS ISSUE.

sudoku

Brsaeinrs

horoscopes

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

crossword

LEO – Jul 23/Aug 23 Leo, satisfaction will come from your interactions with others. Take the initiative and propose a social event for your friends, particularly one that involves outdoor activities.

TAURUS – Apr 21/May 21 Taurus, if you have been dissatisfied with some aspect of your career, now is the ideal opportunity to do something about it. Start testing the job market.

VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22 It is up to you to motivate people and get them to have fun together, Virgo. Express your enthusiasm to friends or family members and others will quickly join in.

GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, the things you need to get done this week in order of priority so that you can get everything accomplished. Otherwise, you’ll just have ideas swimming in your head.

LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23 Tap into your artistic side, Libra. Even if you think there’s no art inside you, you’ll be surprised at what you find. This newfound creativity will pay dividends now and into the future.

CANCER – Jun 22/Jul 22 Cancer, if you are in a relationship or just starting one, you may be in the mood for courting and seduction this week. You’ll only need your natural charm to forge ahead.

ARIES – Mar 21/Apr 20 You need to buckle down for the time being and get your health in check, Aries. Change your diet to one that includes more foods that supply a healthy boost of energy.

SAGITTARIUS – Nov 23/Dec 21 Sagittarius, you may feel more energetic this week than you have in recent weeks. Use your motivation to check things off that lengthy to-do list or to look for new prospects. CAPRICORN – Dec 22/Jan 20 Capricorn, getting your voice heard might be challenging in the days ahead. You just need to maintain a consistent voice, and others will eventually come around. AQUARIUS – Jan 21/Feb 18 Aquarius, take the necessary steps to start living a healthier lifestyle. Now is a good time to scale back on extravagance and make time for a healthy diet and exercise.

SCORPIO – Oct 24/Nov 22 Scorpio, address your anxiety by talking things over with a friend or someone else close to you. Simply talking about a problem can make it less intense.

PISCES – Feb 19/Mar 20 The stars are trying to tell you to take care of yourself this week, Pisces. You need to rest, dream and take some time off.
