A Renfrew woman and her family are warning the public to be vigilant when walking in town following a Friday evening mugging. “I never saw it coming,” the 60-year-old victim, who preferred to not use her name in the newspaper, told The Renfrew Mercury Sunday afternoon. “I didn’t hear anything until he grabbed my purse. It happened so fast it was unbelievable.” She was crossing Lochiel Street where it meets Opeongo Road just after 8 p.m. April 22 when a lone male came up behind her and grabbed her purse before running off down the Millennium Trail towards Prince Avenue.

Paramedics transported the lone female occupant of the 2003 Volkswagon to hospital. A breathalyser test was conducted at Renfrew Victoria Hospital, said OPP Const. Janice Sawbridge, and the 36-year-old Whitewater Region woman was charged with impaired driving

and driving with a blood alcohol concentration over 80 mg per 100 ml of blood. Police arrived at the scene of the April 19 single-vehicle collision, near Chapeski Lane, just before 2:30 p.m. Storyland Road was closed for several hours between Eady Road and River Road The scene was cleared and road reopened around 6 p.m. The driver will appear in Renfrew court on May 18.

One person has died following a collision along Highway 17 in a construction zone near Arnprior Monday morning. OPP has yet to establish facts, but confirmed at least one person - a construction worker - is dead. It is possible another may have died. Three vehicles were likely to have been involved, including one parked alongside the highway, said spokeswoman Janice Sawbridge. No name or sex of the victim is available at this time. The crash occurred west of Campbell Drive, only about a half kilometre from another significant two-vehicle collision that occurred two months ago on Feb. 25. For this latest collision, the highway is closed with traffic being diverted away from the area between Campbell and Calabogie Road this afternoon. Detour signs are in place, or visit www.ontario.ca/511. The area has many BEI Construction workers involved with the twinning of the highway. The westbound speed limit drops significantly as the area is where the four lanes of Highway 417 narrow into two. At the site during the noon hour,

Suspect had dark hoodie, backpack Continued from front

The victim fell during the altercation and although scraped and shaken, was not seriously injured. She ran after the suspect for a short time and shouted at him before quickly heading to her nearby home where she told her husband what happened and called 911. The suspect was wearing a dark hoodie and had a backpack but she did not get a good look at his face. There was a witness driving by, said the woman, who saw the male approaching and then, in his rearview mirror, noticed the suspect slowing down and then running off. By the time the driver turned back to check on the victim, the suspect had disappeared. At first, the victim was in shock. “You’re numb for awhile and the adrenalin is pumping,” she said. “After awhile I sat down and had a good cry. I’ve got a pretty good scratch and a cut below my elbow and scratches on my leg.” The purse contained her wallet, cash, and identification. “It’s a black, very non-descript purse with three zipper sections,” she said. “It’s about 12 by eight inches.” She wants the public to keep her experience in mind. “I want people to be vigilant,” she said, adding she’d have been more on guard had it been 2 a.m. but certainly didn’t expect something like this to happen during the daylight hours. She praised police efforts and noted they responded quickly and have been in contact since the incident. The victim also noted an incident that could be, but is not necessarily, related to the mugging incident. She was walking her usual route Thursday evening (April 21) when she noticed a man sitting on the roof of the Sears building. He called out to her and she carried on her walk. She reported that incident to police, who indicated other people had notified police of the man, as well. In a widely-shared Facebook post, the victim’s sisterin-law appealed to the public for help. “This happened at 8 in plain daylight on a Friday evening. Did anyone see anything?” she wrote. “Who thought that Renfrew wouldn’t be a safe place to walk alone at 8 in the evening?” Renfrew OPP spokesperson Const. Janice Sawbridge said police would like to hear from anyone with information on the incident. “There were two people who were standing outside Goulet Funeral Home that the victim walked past just prior to the incident that we are looking to speak to as they may have witnessed something,” she said. Provincial Const. Amanda Carruthers is investigating. Anyone with information is asked to contact Renfrew OPP at 1-888-310-1122.

Hydro rates pushing people MP seeks input on doctor-assisted dying to breaking point: Yakabuski PC energy critic urges province to counter effects of hydro rate increase coming May 1 John Carter

john.carter@metroland.com

Renfrew-Nipissing Pembroke MPP John Yakabuski is continuing his attack on the Liberal government’s energy policies, saying the latest increase hydro rates are pushing customers to the breaking point. Yakabuski, the Official Opposition Energy Critic, asked the Minister of Energy in the Legislative Assembly what, if anything, he would do to stem the latest “unaffordable” 2.5 per cent increase in the province’s electricity rates beginning May 1. Under the Wynne Liberals, hydro rates have increased for Ontarians whether or not they have used more or less electricity, Yakabuski noted. “This is because of their mismanage-

ment of the electricity system, ineffective energy conservation measures, and unneeded new generation while selling surplus electricity - at a loss - to neighboring jurisdictions,” he said. “The Minister stated that he was taking steps to undo their increases,” added Yakabuski, “Yet since November the average bill has gone up $187.” Despite his pressuring the Ministry of Energy to change the government’s “disastrous energy strategy,” Chiarelli has refused to acknowledge “his failure” to prevent these new rate increases and denied the Liberal’s “mismanagement” of the province’s electricity system even though it has experienced (over the last decade) some of the fastest rate increases in North America, said Yakabuski. “With peak rates about to reach 18 cents kWh, people all across Ontario are reaching the breaking point,” he charged. Yakabuski pressed Chiarelli once again to take action, stating that: “The Minister needs to stop with the rhetoric and commit to action. When will he actually do something concrete to address skyrocketing electricity rates before Ontario reaches the point of no return?”

Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MP Cheryl Gallant is seeking opinions from her constituents on the thorny issue of physician-assisted dying. “Physician-assisted dying raises many deep legal, moral and ethical questions,” said Gallant in a news release.\ “The Conservative Party believes that its members should be able to speak and vote freely on legislation involving matters of conscience. I need to hear from my constituents if they support or oppose physician-assisted dying.” The federal government has introduced Bill C-14, which will amend the Criminal Code so assisted suicide will no longer be illegal in some circumstances. Bill C-14 is the government’s legislative response to the Carter decision of the Supreme Court of Canada, which determined that persons who satisfy the following criterion have a right under section 7 of the Charter to physician-assisted dying: (1) competent adult persons;

(2) suffering intolerably from a grievous and irremediable condition; (3) who give their clear consent. “Individual members of the Conservative caucus have the freedom to examine this legislation, determine whether it includes sufficient safeguards, and make decisions on supporting or opposing it on behalf of constituents,” noted Gallant. “It is important I hear from as many people as possible before June 6, which is the deadline set by the Supreme Court for legislation. I welcome all points of view on the legislation now before Parliament.” Gallant thanked members of the ecumenical community who took the time to attend a roundtable discussion with their MP last fall to share their views and that of their faith community. “Now that actual legislation has been introduced, it is important that all constituents who wish to share their position on this issue step forward and do so.” She said the Conservative

party’s priority has been to ensure any legislation includes safeguards for the most vulnerable in society, as well as for the conscience rights of physicians and allied health professionals to not be forced to participate in assisted dying cases. “The dissenting report written by Conservatives, who were on the Special Joint Committee that studied the subject, included recommendations to exclude minors, stringent safeguards to protect those with underlying mental health challenges, and recognize the risks involved with advanced directives,” said Gallant. “We are pleased that these recommendations have been included in the bill. We are concerned, however, on the push by certain backbench Liberal MPs to remove those safeguards. “I need to hear from as many constituents as possible on this issue,” she concluded. INSIDE

Renfrew County Health issues immunization warning to students John Carter

john.carter@metroland.com

The Renfrew County and District Health Unit is taking steps to try to ensure no local students are suspended from school because their immunizations are not up to date. In a news release, the health unit reports it has been working with local schools to ensure students have the proper shots. Under the Immunization of School Pupils Act, public health units are required to maintain immunization records for all students. The province takes the matter seriously, noting immunization protects children from many serious diseases that are easily spread in schools.

The Health Unit has completed its review of immunization records for the 2015/16 school year. Reminder notices have been sent to families of students with immunization records that are not up to date. Students can get vaccinations that they require at the Health Unit or through their health care provider. They can also mail or fax copies of vaccination records to the Health Unit (health care providers do not notify the Health Unit when a vaccination is given). They can also submit an exemption form. “It is important for health units to have this information,” said Dr. Kathryn Reducka, acting

First phase completed for the Renfrew County Community Study Healthy Communities Partnership

The Healthy Communities Partnership (HCP) has completed the first step of the Renfrew County Community Study (RCCS) project. It is now one step closer to developing a tool to measure our health, well-being and quality of life. The Renfrew County Community Study goal is to collect local data, better understand and measure all aspects of our health. The end result will contribute to better planning and more effective programs across all sectors. The first phase of the project was accomplished in collaboration with the Canadian Council on Social Development (CCSD). The results of the project’s first phase are outlined in a report called Measuring Our Health and Well-being, Phase 1: Community Data Project. “It is important to share what we heard from community members and the outcomes from the first phase of the project,” says RCCS project co-ordinator

Shawna Babcock. “We gathered unique information about the communities across our region and used it to design the first stage of a health measurement tool.” The report describes how Renfrew County community members define health and well-being and provides a model to collect and share local data. It identifies some local challenges, including gaps between urban and rural areas of the County, issues of youth engagement, the natural environment as it relates to community wellbeing, as well as the need for improved information sharing across different communities. It also outlines steps to move the project forward, highlighting the importance of existing resources, partners and data that are easy to access and affordable. Finally, the report proposes next steps for the Renfrew County Community Study. For more information about the report, contact Shawna Babcock at 613633-7075.

medical officer of health at the Renfrew County and District Health Unit. “In the case of an outbreak, public health staff must be able to quickly advise students who are not immunized so they can take action to protect themselves.” The Reminder Notices also prompt parents to ensure

their child’s immunizations are current. This helps protect them from vaccine preventable diseases, added Vicki Benoit, coordinator at the Health Unit. “We are providing extra immunization clinics, including evening clinics so that students have more opportunities to receive the immuni-

zations they need.” If the Health Unit does not receive the required information, Final Notices will be sent. These urge parents to provide the information before the deadline indicated on the notice. Once the deadline is reached, Suspension Orders will be issued by the Acting

Medical Officer of Health. Affected students will not be able to attend school until the required information is provided. To make an appointment for an immunization or to discuss any questions or concerns, call Renfrew County and District Health Unit at 1-800-267-1097, ext. 597.

High Ontario policing costs upset McNab-Braeside council Rural municipalities continue to push for lower policing costs John Carter

john.carter@metroland.com

OPP costs should be brought into line with other policing costs in Canada. That’s the contention of McNabBraeside councillors, who expressed support for efforts by the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) and the Rural Mayors’ Forum of Eastern Ontario to get the costs under control. Deputy Mayor Brian Armsden questioned why Ontario municipalities pay the highest policing costs in Canada and why the burden is being shifted onto smaller municipalities from the towns and cities. Coun. Mark MacKenzie said the economies of scale should mean

lesser police costs in more populous provinces such as Ontario. So it’s puzzling it is the opposite with Ontario paying 20 per cent more, he added. He said municipalities should strongly support AMO’s suggestion that Ontario’s policing costs be brought down to the national average in five years. “It’s a reasonable goal, he said. “We need to look at ways to tighten up. MacKenzie also said that municipalities should have stronger representation on police service boards. There should be more discussion on what calls for service should be responded to by police officers, he suggested. For instance some mental health calls might better be attended to by health care professionals, he said. Also, there are other ways, such as special constables perhaps, to handle some lower level functions, including traffic control for community events, he added. The recommendations are in an AMO report entitled ‘Municipal

Guide to Police Service Act Consultations – Building a New Public Safety Model in Ontario’, which was very well done, said MacKenzie. Later in the meeting, council passed a motion of support for the Township of Minden Hills’ efforts to have the provincial Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services review and reconsider the new OPP billing model that has boosted policing costs dramatically for most rural municipalities. Minden Hills is also asking for the province to review policing expenditures to find ways to reduce the cost per household and to take on a larger portion of the overall OPP budget. The township notes its policing costs have risen by about $650,000 in the past two years, translating into a 6.24 per cent increase in the municipal property tax levy this year alone. “It’s in line with what we’re looking to do as well, said Armsden in moving support of the motion. “I strongly support this one, added Mayor Tom Peckett.

Take up the fight against fraud Each year, thousands of people across the country lose millions of dollars through scams and fraudulent schemes. The way to combat this is through public awareness. Let’s talk about fraud, open up a dialogue and report on the harmful aspects of this type of victimization. According to the Canadian AntiFraud Prevention Centre, 66 per cent of Canadian-based mass marketing fraud that took place in 2014 was Internet and email based. Twenty per cent was conducted over the phone and the majority of victims are ages 50 to 70. Fraud is a terrible thing. It preys on honest citizens who are perhaps investing funds to save for retirement, or making a donation to a charity they trust. When the relationships break down and the money is gone, many victims feel shame and embarrassment. However, they can play an important role in investigating fraud, but the antifraud centre says just five per cent report the crimes. If they share their stories, they could

prevent other family members, friends or neighbours from falling for the same scams. Lottery and prize fraud schemes are also on the rise, and the CAFC says that in 2014 more than 4,000 Canadians reported prize or lottery fraud and 652 of those lost a total of more than $4.3 million. We should all keep in mind the old adage, “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.” Keep in mind that most banking institutions and legal firms don’t send out blanket form emails to people asking for their personal information, so don’t give that information to anyone unless you have verified they are a company you deal with and know. Doing a bit of homework and taking a few extra steps could make all the difference in not becoming a victim of fraud. There’s no shame in doing a good deed or saving for your future. We all just need to be a little more careful where we put our hard-earned money.

Hospice Renfrew a bright, shining light in the county To the editor:

Hospice Renfrew was new to me. I was worried when my sister-in-law Kathy Henneberry was transferred to this facility from a big Ottawa hospital. I am happy to say that those concerns were completely unfounded. My husband, Jim, and I liked to visit with Kathy and my brother Glenn. Our first trip to the hospice was a total surprise. We found a beautiful new building with lovely gardens along the entranceway. There was a warm welcoming foyer where we were greeted by a smile and given direction to Kathy’s room. Kathy’s room was not like a hospital room…it was bright and spacious and tastefully decorated. This was “her” room. She had lots of windows that looked out at the busy bird feeder encompassed by a colourful, well maintained garden with a backdrop of evergreen and deciduous trees and even some wandering squash plants. The garden stretched along that side of the property. The view was breathtaking… the kind of view you would see on a postcard. It was obvious

that the gardener loved his or her garden. I thought that it must have been the work of a professional gardener. But was it? Everything about the hospice was inviting. From the kitchen, complete with snacks and freshly baked goods, to the coffee ready to quench your thirst. The dining area was bright and inviting and then there was the sunroom that led to walkways. We walked around the gardens and through the grounds. Everywhere I looked I could admire the pleasant view. Everything was gorgeous. But the heart of the Hospice Renfrew is not the material things. Rather it was the hardworking, caring staff and volunteers who are quick with a smile and genuinely care about the patients/residents. Upon entering the building you could feel the love – genuine love – and caring from everyone you met. It was such a relief to see the hospice at work. And it was especially comforting for my brother, Glenn Henneberry. He spent hours and hours at Kathy’s bedside and late in the night when he was heading home for a few hours of rest, he

could feel completely at ease knowing Kathy was in good hands and being cared for well. Thank you to all who make the hospice a special place for special people. As I already mentioned, the hospice has a highly qualified and knowledgeable staff. That is very important. There is another group of ‘workers’ who are vital to the smooth running of the hospice. And that is the volunteers, those who choose to give their time to help in many ways. Volunteers at this facility seem to do a million things…from gardening to baking to helping where needed. The volunteers are an integral part of this whole picture. They make a huge difference. Special thanks to the volunteers. Hospice Renfrew can be likened to a bright star where you can take a deep breath, admire your surroundings, and know the magic of the light is always there. This is most comforting for residents like Kathy and her husband Glenn as well as their children and extended family, and their friends. Thank you Hospice Renfrew for generously sharing your skills, your time, your devotion and your lives. You cannot envision how much all of this means to all of us. Thank you all.

People come to Hospice Renfrew to live, not die Maureen Sullivan-Bentz,

Executive Director, Hospice Renfrew

The journey along the palliative care continuum begins when a person is diagnosed with a life-limiting illness. Most people associate the diagnosis of cancer with palliative care, however any chronic health condition including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, heart failure, or kidney disease should rightly be considered palliative illnesses as one is not expected to recover from these conditions. Palliative care does not mean one should immediately begin planning for end-of-life, in fact it is quite the opposite. Palliative care starts with the diagnosis of palliative illness, your health care provider begins working with you to determine how you can live your life to the fullest and how to stay as healthy as possible for as long as you can. This is considered to be health promotion for people who are dying and is a holistic approach to managing your mental, spiritual, emotional and physical care. Palliative care may be combined with other treatments aimed at reducing or curing the illness, such as chemotherapy, surgery or radiation in the case of cancer. With chronic illnesses treatment may include physiotherapy, pulmonary rehabilitation and medication adjustments. All of these interventions are intended to help manage your diagnosis so that you may live life as fully as possible for as long as possible. With the diagnosis of a life-limiting illness you may be unsure what to expect and you may begin to wonder about how you want to die. You may want some control about what you will want or need at the end of life. These things are important for you to discuss with your health care provider and your loved ones - the process is called advance care planning. It allows you to make your wishes and preferences known to those you love and care about well in advance of you not being able to make those decisions at the end stages of your life. Consideration should include where you want to die. Recently, there has been much discussion and focus on controversial issues related to end-of-life care, such as euthanasia and physician assisted suicide rather than a focus on accessible and quality end of life care. Fortunately in Renfrew County every resident has the opportunity to access quality palliative care delivered by a specially trained team of health care providers at our residential hospice palliative care home, Hospice Renfrew. Many residents and families who have lived with us

Hike or Run for Hospice this Sunday May 1 at Ma-Te-Way Park

tell us ‘people come to hospice to live, not to die’ and this is what we strive to achieve in the care we provide each day. Residential hospice palliative care is aimed at relieving suffering and improving the quality of life and dignity for persons who are living with, or dying from, advanced illness. In fact, research has shown that people who choose hospice palliative care live an average of 29 days longer with a better quality of life than those who did not opt for hospice near the end of life. We also recognize that the grieving process begins when a life-limiting illness is diagnosed and continues throughout the journey from life to death. . Palliative care meets not only physical needs, but also the psychological, social, cultural, emotional and spiritual needs of each person and family. It aims to help people to live out their remaining time in comfort and dignity. Quality hospice palliative care neither hastens death or prolongs life. People choose to come to Hospice Renfrew to receive end-of-life care when it becomes clear that a cure is no longer likely and they want comfort care. It can be an alternative to staying in or returning to hospital and some choose hos-

pice when their care needs exceed what can reasonably be provided by family at home. People also come to our hospice for short stays or on site assessments for pain and symptom management or respite care with the goal of returning home. Hospice Renfrew is about family and living and celebrating life bravely, without regret. When you walk through the front door of our home it’s rather like walking into your best friend’s place. You are greeted by a friendly volunteer who will confirm your visit with the resident prior to allowing you in. This is to ensure that the resident’s privacy and wishes are respected. When you enter you feel the warmth and comfort of a beautiful home. It is bright and cheery and each day is filled with the aroma of freshly baked cookies and muffins prepared by our volunteer baking team. You often find the nurses making bacon and eggs for the residents in the morning. We serve breakfast for supper, supper for breakfast and anything in between. What the resident wants, the resident gets, whenever they want it! Our residents often share meals and special occasion dinners with their families and staff at our dining room table. It is not uncom-

mon to see little children playing on our living room floor in front of the fireplace. I At Hospice Renfrew we truly do celebrate life. A short time ago a family called to ask if they could bring in a birthday cake and balloons to celebrate their dad’s 65th birthday which would be the following Monday. Unfortunately the man passed away over the weekend. Around noon on Monday the man’s young grandchildren and wife came to hospice carrying birthday balloons and a beautifully decorated birthday cake. His wife had called earlier that day to ask if they could come to celebrate with the staff as it was still her husband’s birthday.

Prayers for Palliative Care May 4 in Renfrew Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Women’s League

With the impending legislation for euthanasia and physician-assisted death in Canada, the need for all Canadians to have greater accessibility to palliative care has become an urgent priority. The National Organization of the Catholic Women’s League of Canada has taken the initiative to call upon the power of prayer, which Pope Francis has been encouraging all peoples in the world to embrace. He has written: “Let us not underestimate the power of so many voices united in prayer.” To respond to this call, the league has decided to initiate a nationwide ‘12 hours of Prayer for Palliative Care’ on Wednesday, May 4. This is designed to take place during the National Hospice Palliative Care Week (organized by the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association) as a profound witness to the sanctity of human life. Our Lady of Fatima CWL council here in Renfrew with the support of our spiritual adviser, Fr. Ryan Holly, has planned an hour of prayer to be held from 6 to 7 p.m. on May 4 at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 100 Lisgar Ave. The event will consist of prayers led by members of the CWL and reflective readings, followed with time for private prayer.

Continued excellence in RVH mammography program The Canadian Association of Radiologists (CAR) has once again recognized Renfrew Victoria Hospital (RVH) with a threeyear term of accreditation in mammography. “As with so many of our programs at RVH, we strive for excellence in patient care accreditation is an essential part of providing the very best patient care possible,” said Phil Crozier, head of the RVH diagnostic imaging department. Obtaining accreditation status is an intense process involving strict quality control standards and a thorough evaluation process. The team is required to monitor daily equipment performance, perform thorough weekly machine testing and submit a selection of case studies and testing results. “Accreditation is most important for our patients because it means that we have the absolute best equipment, the best physician credentials and that everything in the mammography suite is always kept up to date,” explains RVH mammographer Debbie Tiernay. The Mammography Accreditation Program was instituted more than 20 years ago to ensure the quality of mammography images meets the highest standards. RVH has provided fully accredited mam-

Mammograms involve a low-dose x-ray of breast tissue to detect and evaluate breast changes. The exam is performed to aid in the early detection and diagnosis of breast diseases. RVH began offering fully digitized

mammography examinations in 2011. RVH president and CEO Randy Penney congratulates the team for their continued commitment to the program. “Being awarded with accreditation in mammography is a major achievement for our department, hospital and, most importantly, for our patients who utilize our services,” he said.

Renfrew Timberwolves announce new coaches Tiffany Lepack

tlepack@metroland.com

A father-son duo will lead the wolf pack this season. The new head coach for the Renfrew Timberwolves is Mike Riopelle and his assistant will be Jesse Riopelle. The team, which plays in the Central Canada Hockey Tier 2 League, made the announcement on April 24, president and general manager Derek McGrimmon said in an e-mail to the Renfrew Mercury the team was pleased with the selections. McGrimmon described Mike as a Renfrew native and long standing businessman in the community. “Mike brings with him a wealth of hockey knowledge, information and experience after 16 years of coaching, that he is anxious to share,” said McGrimmon. “Jesse will complement Mike by having the playing experience as he himself was with the Wolves from 20072012, capturing two valley division titles as well as spending a year with the Nepean Raiders Junior A team.” McGrimmon calls the pair a winning combination. “(It) will prove to be beneficial for our future junior Timberwolves on and off the ice, leaving everyone anxious to get the new season underway.”

Mike says he is nervous, excited and looking forward to the challenge. “I’ve done a lot of coaching before, just not at this level,” he said. Although he never played hockey himself, something he says makes him a better coach, he ensured his three sons all played. He coached in the Renfrew minor hockey system for 16 years, starting with initiation to house league and rep. He was born and raised in Renfrew and now runs a painting company with his children. Being the coach in his hometown is something special for him. “It means a lot, coaching in your hometown,” said Mike. “You’re a lot more successful when it’s your hometown, it’s in your heart and soul.” He knows what he has to do to get the team back to its winning ways. “I think we have to involve more local talent from Renfrew and area,” said Mike. “The core is gone so it gives us a chance to start again and not adopt the system they had before.” As to coaching with his son, Mike calls him an expert. “We get a long 100 per cent so it makes it easy,” said Mike. “He has the skill to show them, having a 25year-old is a big help.” In an e-mail interview Jesse said

Mike says his coaching style is a bit old fashioned. “It’s more defensive than offensive, you got to keep the puck out of the net,” said Mike. “Every time

RMB welcomes special guest at training Sherry Haaima

sherry.haaima@metroland.com

Renfrew Minor Baseball (RMB) hosted a special visitor at a recent spring training session. Ottawa Nepean Canadi-

ans’ 18U manager and director of baseball operations, Tanner Watson, an Arnprior native, along with several Canadians players, joined RMB youth at the Renfrew Armouries on April 18 for the event.

The Canadians play in the Premier Baseball League of Ontario. Watson was recently named as a pitching coach on Canada’s 2016 Junior National Team’s spring training roster.

The Renfrew club is preparing for an exciting year that includes hosting the provincials this summer. Their golf tournament, a nine and dine at Dragonfly Golf Links, is coming up on Friday, May 27.

Renfrew Golf Club opens for the 2016 season Renfrew Golf Club

Renfrew Golf Club opened the 2016 golf season by honouring the past. Lee Sharpe and Henry Egan, two longtime members of the club, were invited to hit ceremonial tee shots to start the year. “We wanted to do something a little different to start the season and our board and I came up with the idea of honouring Lee and Henry for all of the years they have spent supporting and championing Renfrew Golf Club (RGC),” said Kevin Sebulski, Renfrew’s new general manager. “It was great to see Lee hit the ball right down the middle of the fairway, it definitely put a bit of pressure on Henry, but he hit his tee shot down the middle of the fairway as well.” Renfrew Golf Club also has a few new initiatives in store for area golfers, including Kids Golf Fore Free All Day, Every Day at RGC. “We know one of the barriers to getting

kids into sports is price, so we are not only providing free golf and lessons this season to all of the juniors in Renfrew and area, but our members have also provided hundreds of golf balls that we will give to juniors at no cost,” said Sebulski. “Another idea we are very excited about is our Summer Nights Dinner menu. We have a fantastic covered patio and a great enclosed terrace that offer some of the best views in the Valley, and we believe there is a need for a restaurant that has great seasonal and local food, paired with some very nice wines and attentive service. RGC will even have live entertainment some evenings,” he added. “We will start the menu May long-weekend, but please give us a call as we do have a few weddings and golf tournaments over the course of the summer,” said Sebulski. To celebrate the opening of the 2016 golf season, until

Basketball wins for Reunions, Signature Styles, Midtown Rob Warren

The Basket Brawlers got off to a slow start and trailed the Reunions 16-7 at half time in last week’s ladies basketball action. They fought back and closed the gap to 21-19.

Defensive lapses down the stretch by the Brawlers sent the Reunions on several fast breaks, allowing them to pull away 36-25. Delaney Leavoy, Hilary McMillan, and Stacie Hill accounted for the bulk of the Reunion scoring with 15, 11,

and 10 points respectively. The Basket Brawlers stayed close for three quarters, trailing Signature Styles/K L Plumbing 2421. They ran out of gas late and dropped a 39-23 decision. Katie Dolan scored 14 points for the vic-

tors. If individual stats were kept, I am sure Megan Riopelle of the Brawlers would have had a doubledouble in rebounds and blocked shots. Signature Styles/K L Plumbing couldn't solve the Midtown Floor-

ing defence and trailed 17-5 at the break. An even second half left Midtown with a 36-23 victory. All nine Midtown snipers hit the scoresheet, with Andrea Martin leading the way with eight points.

The Prior Chest Nuts are looking for five breast cancer survivors to join their dragon boat team this year. “We need people right now,” said Jeanette Grant, a member of the team. “We’ve lost five people to breast cancer in five years.” A plaque with the names of the deceased is displayed on the Chest Nuts’ boat “so they can keep paddling with us,” said Grant. “They remind us why we paddle.” The team is usually made up of about 20 breast cancer survivors from across the Valley. Members come from Arnprior, McNab-Braeside, Pakenham, Renfrew, and as far as Kanata. Anyone who has had breast cancer is invited to join. “We welcome men as well as women,” said Grant. “If anyone’s had breast cancer and wants to paddle, give us a call.” The motion of paddling is good exercise for those who have under-

The Ottawa Valley Food Co-op is selling rain barrels to raise funds to offset its operational costs.

Ottawa Valley Food Co-op launches rain barrel sale Ottawa Valley Food Co-op

The Ottawa Valley Food Co-op (OVFC) has recently launched a rain barrel sale to raise funds to offset its operational costs, with recognition of the need for and the value of rain barrels in maintaining the health of our home gardens and the environment. There are a number of benefits to maximizing the use of rainwater in growing your garden. When captured before it hits the ground, rainwater is free of the pesticides, pollutants and chemicals it often gathers when running across streets, sidewalks and lawns. Rainwater also has the benefit of being a similar temperature as the air, and does not shock plants’ roots like tap water does. Overall, rainwater is a healthier option for plants. Making sure your plants are predominantly watered by rain can require some advance planning, especially with unpredictable weather. Rain barrels allow people to collect water through the rainy season for use during dry summer months. Water from a rain barrel can be used to wash vehicles or water lawns, and the water can be used to clean floors and do laundry. As well, having a source of stored water can be beneficial if an emergency ever arises. Local residents can keep their gardens healthy and well-nourished

by ordering a rain barrel in advance of the Sunday, May 29 pickup date at the Rankin Culture and Community Centre. Orders can be placed at www.RainBarrel.ca/OVFC. Rainwater can help reduce the pollution and balance the pH in your plants’ soil, and prevent damage caused by cold water. If you are committed to ensuring your lawn or garden is as healthy as it can be, use more rainwater in your gardening. Make a day of it. As well as picking up your rain barrel, other events are planned for May 29 at the Rankin Culture and Community Centre (10 a.m. to 3 p.m.) – join the OVFC for gardening presentations, an East Indian cooking workshop, a pop-up farmers market and more. RainBarrel.ca reclaims food grade barrels and repurposes them as rain barrels. Once used to transport fruits and vegetables, they now offer years of reliable service as rain barrels. Partnering with various non-profit organizations, RainBarrel.ca helps stage truckload fundraisers in communities across Canada with new communities added each week. For more information, please contact Larry Pomerantz at Larry@RainBarrel.ca 905-5455577 or visit www.RainBarrel.ca. Cookies kickstart conversation about advance care planning at RVH Renfrew Victoria Hospital (RVH) championed National Advance Care Planning Day on Friday, April 15, by handing out ‘care planning cookies’ to inpatients, visitors and staff. Inside each fortune-style cookie was one of 17 questions intended to stimulate discussion about living and dying well, and what a person’s wishes would be. For example, they might ask “The things that give my life purpose are…” or “Three things people caring for me need to know about me when I am dying…” “The cookies are an ice breaker,” said Ann Marie Urbaitis of the RVH Palliative Care Program, “because it’s difficult to have these conversations.” Advance care planning (ACP) is all about making decisions now, appointing a substitute decision maker and letting that person know what you would want, so that your health care preferences will be carried out in the future, even if you can’t speak for yourself. Urbaitis adds that it is much more difficult to make decisions at the time of an illness or critical incident when stress tends to run very high. “How would your spouse or substitute decision maker know what you want if you don’t talk about it?” said Urbaitis. The RVH ethics committee and volunteers were on hand to help distribute the cookies and resource materials provided by the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association’s Speak Up campaign. “We’re always trying to connect our ethics committee with staff and the community, so this day was also

Welcome to Junior Fair Renfrew Fair

Our department is open to members 18 years and under. Each exhibitor must be a member of the Junior Fair. The membership fee of $1 entitles members to enter any or all of the classes in which he or she is eligible. This also entitles the member to three free admissions. Only one entry is allowed per section. Note: Individuals must exhibit in their appropriate age group and are entitled to exhibit in any higher age group as well in Junior fair. Our committee has met and here is a sneak preview of what we have to offer to our junior exhibitors for our 162st Renfrew Fair. There will be a monetary prize for most points in Junior Fair again this year. The winner for 2015 junior fair was Sydney St. Pierre. There are many categories to choose from, including model making, artwork, handicrafts, baking, fruit, vegetable and field crops, flowers and 4-H. The artwork and handicrafts division has many interesting entries to choose from. Many of the requested entries are items readily accessible in your home, including recyclable articles. Create, decorate, draw, snap pictures, sculpt, make collages, or use the computer, the decision is yours. There is also a section asking you to decorate an unopened non-perishable box or can of food, which is then distributed to the local food bank. Be sure to check over our baking section for this year, as we have made many changes.

Youths!

The fruit, vegetable, field crops, and flowers have a large selection of entries to choose from. Perhaps now is the time to decide what your favourite vegetable, flower or field crop entry will be? The Renfrew Fair Poster Competition is open to three age categories and the first place winners from each will be eligible to compete in the district competition in October. Should they be the successful first place winner there, they will advance to the OAAS level competition, which will be held in Toronto February 2017. The first place entry for eight chocolate chip cookies, advances in the same way. Our new midway provider Carter Shows is sponsoring a 3-D poster competition. Ride bracelets or tickets will be awarded in each section to the first, second and third-place entries, plus all entries receive one free cotton candy at the midway! This year Country Fair Baking will be sponsoring Bernardin jam/jelly contest and also the Robin Hood Family best Lunchbox Snack. Interested in a different challenge? Take a look at the new entries available this year and we are always open to new suggestions for entries for next year. The 4-H has three sections: Open 4-H class, 4-H Interclub Competition and 4-H Club Competition. Entries must be in between 6-9 p.m. on Sept. 6. See the prize list at the Renfrew Armouries or at www.renfrewfair.com .

Public

information

meetings were held at both Westmeath and Madawaska Public Schools on April 14. This was an opportunity for parents, students and the community to hear more about the modified pupil accommodation review of these schools. Following a general overview, the public was asked to visit information stations to have specific questions discussed regarding transportation, facility, finances and most importantly student learning. Both meetings were very well attended with lots of feedback gathered by school board staff. The final staff report will be publicly available on April 29. The initial reports provided in late February included a history of each school, complete with historic and current enrolment as well as projected enrolment. It also included each school's facility condition index, a standard asset management tool which considers the total cost of

any needed or outstanding repairs, renewal or upgrade requirements compared to the current replacement value of the building components. The board of trustees will receive public delegations on May 16. Interested person(s) must declare their intention to address the board in writing to the director of education's office by 4 p.m. on May 9. ALGONQUIN MATH

Staff at Eganville District

Public School have been exploring how to teach mathematics using traditional Algonquin activities. This project has been underway for a few years and is having phenomenal results. In Grade 1, a template is used to create bead and leather bracelets that support the development of numeric, spatial and proportional reasoning. In Grade 3, students work with looms and focus on multiplicative and algebraic thinking.

Not only are the students becoming more engaged in math but they are also learning about their First Nations neighbours. This is another excellent example of the leadership, innovation and initiative present in our staff who always put student learning and development first.

The Great Downtown

And in Grades 6/7, students spend time using looms to create bracelets and discover the complex ways of thinking about patterning and algebra. They also make circular medallions that support the understanding of fractions, algebra and geometry. In a truly collaborative model, several individuals from the Pikwàkanagàn First Nation come into the classrooms to share their knowledge and work with the teachers and students.

Decisions, decisions Diana Wakely

Renfrew Art Guild

In our lives decisions are made every day. Sometimes it can be as simple as what to have for breakfast or lunch. Then life comes along and gives you a kick. An ordinary day can be a momentous, disastrous one and if you are lucky a wonderful one. Which brings to mind the old adage is your glass ‘half empty’ or ‘half full?’ I personally drive my friends crazy because most of my existence has been on the latter. I fortunately had a father who lived his life by Norman Vincent Peale’s book ‘The Power of Posi-

With this in mind the Renfrew Art Guild decided the program for the next meeting is to bring a piece of art that you have done with your non-dominant hand. So there is the challenge for everyone. See what you can do. The gauntlet is down to members and to those who wish to come and see just what can be produced.

tive Thinking.’ These days for many of you it is difficult. So many friends, family are ill, so many dealing with complex family matters and issues. That half full glass is sometimes hard to visualize. What if you are an artist and your ability to use your painting hand is lost. What do you do? A good friend, a very accomplished artist has had that happen to them. Give up? No! This friend picked up the brush and painted with the opposite hand! In the true fashion of the glass half full, this friend is producing paintings that people using their dominant hand could not create.

The guild welcomes Patrick John Mills to town as he has recently bought Imbleau Foundry and will be setting up an art studio there. Sparks, Brownies visit paramedics First Renfrew Sparks and Brownies visited the Renfrew paramedic base on April 6. From left, in back are: Steve Osipenko, Chantel Hisko, Chelsie St. Denis, Jennifer St. Denis, Diana Larocque, Tonya Johnston, Brooke Johnston and Tania Leclerc and in front: Eve Gravelle, Becca Hisko, Alaina Dean, Nevaeh Harrington, Alida Daber, Elena DiPaolo, Miley Gogolin, Olivia Sammon, Aubrey Giroux, Ruby Bennett, Brooklynn King, Clara DiPaolo and Evelyn Leclerc.

Great invention makes its way to Northcote What excitement! And in the middle of the week at that! The call from Aunt Bertha on the next farm came before we left for school. To even get a phone call that early in the morning was unusual in itself. But to be invited over that evening in the middle of the week was even more unusual. Visiting among neighbours was reserved for Saturday nights! Aunt Bertha had something she wanted us to see, and yes, the whole family was invited to cross the twenty-acre field right after supper. Aunt Bertha said we would see something so new, that it was doubtful anyone in all of Northcote had ever seen one before. The Thoms children who went to school with us wouldn’t give us a hint as to what we were about to see at their home that night, but you could tell they were pretty excited too. Supper was hurried, the kitchen halfredded up, our faces washed, and off we went on the flat-bottomed wagon across the field to the next farm. Aunt Bertha and Uncle Alex and their eight children were waiting for us, and Ralph, who seemed to be in charge, led us through the kitchen, the summer kitchen and out to another room, which Aunt Bertha called the shed, although it was in much better shape than the little building we called a shed back home. There in the middle of the floor was a brand new washing machine! Like us, the Thoms had no electricity, but this certainly looked like it would take more than elbow grease to run it. We circled the machine, and I wondered what was so special about it that 44 The Renfrew Mercury - Thursday, April 28, 2016

Aunt Bertha would bring us all over from the next farm to see it. The tub was a pale green, certainly a step up from the square tin tub and scrub board Mother had to use. But I still couldn’t imagine what was so important about a washing machine that our whole family would be brought over in the middle of the week to look at it. “Stand well back,” Uncle Alex said, and as one we all moved a few feet away. Beside the machine was another apparatus that looked a lot like the motor Mr. Briscoe brought around in the fall to saw wood. “Better put your pipe away, Albert,” Uncle Alex ordered. “Don’t want anyone to get hurt.” This was getting scarier by the minute. We couldn’t see what Uncle Alex was doing, but he pressed a few buttons and this black piece of machine made an ungodly sound, like the whole place was going to blow up and a puff of blue smoke came out, just about blocking Uncle Alex from view. Then Aunt Bertha pushed something on the washing machine and right before our eyes, the gyrator started up, the few pieces of clothes began tumbling, suds

rose from the depths and Aunt Bertha stood back, crossed her arms over the chest and said, “Now, isn’t that something?” With laundry for eight Thom children, there would be no more scrub board! The magic wasn’t to end there. Another button was pushed, the machine came to a halt, and Aunt Bertha pulled out a set of long underwear from the soapy water, turned a little handle, fed the underwear into a ringer attached to the washing machine and the long johns dropped into a basket on the floor, looking like they were almost dry enough to put on. Uncle Alex explained how the whole thing was run with a gas motor and as far as he could figure out, it was the first gas washing machine in all of Northcote. Nobody was going to argue with that. Fancy washing machines were nothing new to Mother, who had an electric one in New York, but she kept that to herself, instead praising Aunt Bertha for this newfangled gas machine that would lighten her load on wash days. The new gas washing machine over at the Thoms farm was all we could talk about when we got home. “By gar, that’s really something,” Father said. He thought it was the greatest invention since the telephone. Unlike the radio, which Father was sure would never catch on. Interested in an electronic version of Mary’s books? Ten-and-one-half tables competed at Ma-Te-Way Activity Centre April 20 in the always-popular STaC event, where coveted ACBL silver points are available. (STaC stands for sectional tournaments at clubs). Before the 1 p.m. start of regular action, the Chalk Talk conducted by Wayne Daze introduced players to the Puppet Stayman convention. This convention, a variation of Stayman, will inform the responder if a partner has opened one no trump with a five-card major, which is the current general practice. Puppet Stayman, like Stayman, requires at least eight high card points with two clubs the responder’s first bid. There then follows a fairly complex series of bids but with precise results. More detail will follow in subsequent Chalk Talks. The afternoon saw two successful small slam contracts. Jeannie Yag-

minas and Mona Brydges brought home the only slam on Board 28, a six no trump effort. On Board 22, Yolande Baillon and Bette Rowe scored six diamonds, a top board and surprising contract. Kudos to both pairs. Congratulations to the April 20 winners: North-South • First: Nancy Cavanagh and Marcel Marsan; • Second: Jeannie Yagminas and Mona Brydges; • Third: Gwen Latendresse and Ruth Grant. East-West • First: Bob Bouchard and Garry Irving (65.90%); • Second: Leanne Cheliak and Rick Duncan (65.50%); • Third: Carol Sulpher and David Sulpher. Arnprior’s tournament is April 29, 30 and May 1. If interested, contact Wayne Daze at 433-9401.
